You are Siegfried Schmidt, a former guard from the city of Morsland. Due to various circumstances, you have become the new wielder of Galadriel, a holy sword which houses a powerful six-winged angel of the same name. Now you have come to the White Watchtower, a fortress close to the border between the Forsaken Lands and the kingdom of Iseria, to train with the crusaders so that you can protect yourself from the demons that might come after you now that the sword is in your possession.

After finding the pickpocket from the Festival of Creation, you discovered that the thief, named Sirus, can actually cast spells, and has been able to without a foci for years, a feat even Galadriel praised. Though you did not like him, you had to admit he had talent, and thought to recruit him for the White Watchtower. However, the Lord-Governor's brother Henry wanted to hurry and punish Sirus for robbing the Lord-Governor's castle and humiliating him. With some convincing however, you managed to sway him, enlisting Sirus under the Rite of Conscription under the pretense that it would be good publicity for Henry and that Sirus may be killed by demons while working there. With that fiasco settled, you and your friends Erika and Roland then exited the guard post, while Captain Gregory and the Lord-Governor started making preparations for Sirus' enlistment at the watchtower.

The three of you exit the guard post together, leaving the rest to Captain Gregory and the Lord-Governor of Morsland. The sun has already begun to set, and most shops will be closing soon.

"Well, glad that's over with. I think I should take these back home now though before they completely dry out. I'll see you two later." Roland says, carrying the bag of fruit the merchant lady gave him and heading back towards your home.

You have about an hour until nightfall. You told Reinhardt you would meet him at the tavern tonight, but you should have time to finish up one last errand before then if you want.

"Hey Erika, you mind if we stop by Arniel's shop real quick? I haven't had a chance to stop by there today."

Erika shrugs. "Fine by me."

The streets leading to Arniel's shop are still fairly busy, as people continue to work on repairs to their homes and shops. You can hear the sound of hammers on nails all the way there, until you arrive at Arniel's shop.

The shop, though still standing, has definitely seen some damage. A large hole in the roof is currently being covered by a tarp, and several windows are boarded over. Despite this, the sign on the front door still says "Open". Arniel is outside, covering one of the holes in the wall with a plank of wood, while the alchemist from the farm, Damien, stands atop a ladder and works to close the hole hidden under the tarp.

"Hm? Well look who's decided to come visit." Arniel says after noticing your presence. "Pardon the damage, the invasion yesterday did not treat this place well. If you're here to shop though, I assure you we're still very much open for business."

>"Actually, I just came here to visit. How have things been, besides the invasion?"

"I actually just stopped by to visit, but in that case would you mind if I bought a few things while you're still open?"

Arniel finishes driving in one last nail before setting the hammer down and wiping the sweat off his brow. "I don't mind at all, in fact I was just about ready to take a break anyways. Damien, come down for a bit, we're taking a break."

"Ahh, finally." Damien complains, descending down the ladder and laying his tools on the ground as well. Arniel, the short red-headed elf that saved you back at the festival, leads you inside the shop and directs you, Erika, and Damien to sit.

"Had to store the merchandise away while we made repairs. Wait here, I'll be back shortly." He explains, disappearing into a back room. As he leaves, you hear him shout further into the store "Thalia, would make tea please? We have guests over."

The two of you wait in the main room with Damien in the mean time. Damien takes his seat and groans, apparently exhausted from working all day.

"I see you made it here safe and sound. How are you doing Damien?"

He scoffs. "'Safe and sound' isn't quite how I'd put it. The trip here was peaceful enough, but hardly a few days after I arrive suddenly more demons show up here as well, like some sort of cruel joke. Though at least I'm still alive, and not sitting in that Void-forsaken farm."

"Maybe you should come back to the watchtower with us. At least there we'll be prepared if there's an attack."

"Tempting, but I'll have to turn you down. My old mentor still needs help rebuilding as you can see and I'm not sure I want to go back now that a crusade seems inevitable. At the least I'll consider it, but not until master Arniel's shop is back together."

"I understand, just thought I'd suggest it. An alchemist would come in handy at the watchtower after all."

"I'm sure some young student or another will offer you their services sooner or later with the coming crusade, don't worry. Like I said though, I'll at least consider it, but for now at least I'm needed here."

"Sorry to keep you waiting." You hear from the back of the room. Arniel, now carrying a large box, returns from the room in the back and, with the help of a step ladder, places it on the counter. Quickly, he starts pulling out several vials of varying shapes, size, and color, and organizes them on the counter for you.

"What are all these?" You ask, not familiar with potions outside of the healing potions in your pack.

"These are all the potions I had left after whatever demons barged in here decided to smash most of my stock. Here, allow me to explain their uses and prices."

The watchtower doesn't really have any alchemists. Part of it is because most potions require specific ingredients which the tower doesn't get in it's usual supply shipments, let alone in the quantity they'd need to supply the whole tower.

You hand Arniel 20 gold pieces and take one Healing Potion and one bottle of Wizard's Delight, placing both in your backpack. A short while later, Arniel's daughter Thalia comes in with the tea, passing all four of you a cup.

Arniel takes a sip of his tea. "Thank you Thalia. Nothing quite like tea after a long day of labor."

"Yeah, it looks like the store took a lot of damage from the invasion. Have you been out there all day?"

"Indeed, we have. Had to at least get all the holes patched up before nightfall, wouldn't want it to rain and flood the shop after all."

"Sounds like a pain."

"It is, especially considering some of the materials here are volatile when exposed to water."

"Volatile?"

"Well, I suppose that's a rather harsh word for it. I can at least say nothing's going to explode if it gets wet."

"Not anymore, at least." Damien chimes in.

"Hush Damien, you'll give them the wrong idea. Ah-hem, there's nothing to worry about you two, you can both relax. Nothing you've bought is volatile like what I've mentioned, and any dangerous materials here are under control. Please stop fidgeting ma'am, there is nothing to worry about, I guarantee."
>>
>>40057525
-------
The four of you talk a while longer, with Thalia coming in to refill your cups when you run out. Apparently, Damien arrived here about two days before the invasion, and has been staying with Arniel while he tries to set up his own shop (though that plan has been postponed due to the attack). Arniel says that things had been business as usual up until the attack, though he was surprised to see his old apprentice Damien return.

"I'd lost contact with him after he'd finished his training. When he showed up on my doorstep after all these years, I must admit I was quite surprised, even more so after he explained what happened. From what he's told me, it sounds like you've done a lot since you left town."

"You have no idea." You confess, enjoying the hot tea as you chat.

"Well, just make sure you take care of yourself. It was a miracle you recovered the last time you came here, I doubt someone with even my level of experience will be able to save you if you end up like that again."

"I'll keep that in mind." You respond, thinking back to the last time you came here, after being fried and almost disemboweled by Andras at the Festival of Creation.

Before you know it, the sun starts to disappear behind the horizon, the sky starting to grow dark as night approaches.

"So Arniel, I've been thinking. With another crusade coming up, I'm willing to bet the watchtower could use some potions. I asked Damien about joining us, but he said he's too busy here. Still, some healing potions could really come in handy once the fighting starts, so is there maybe some sort of deal we could work out between you and the watchtower?"

"What did you have in mind?"

"Well, I could talk to the captain, I imagine he'd be able to pay you if you could supply the watchtower with potion. What do you think."

Arniel brings a hand up to his bearded chin and thinks. "Hmm...Well, I could certainly use the business, but I'm afraid there's no way I could supply an entire watchtower by myself. However, if you can get in touch with your captain and he's willing to cover the costs, I could speak with a few associates of mine and we might be able to set something up."

"Sure thing, I'll talk to him about it once I get back to the tower."

"Excellent, I look forward to hearing back from him then."
>>
>>40058103
The two of you discuss the specifics for a while longer, when you notice the sun has completely disappeared beyond the horizon, replaced by the half moon.

"Oh, it's already starting to get late. We're gonna have to leave, but I'm glad we could stop and visit."

"No problem Siegfried, this was a welcome distraction from all the work we've been doing around the shop today. You're welcome here any time."

"Thanks, I'll see stop by again some time if I have time. Thanks for the tea."

With that, you and Erika get up and exit the alchemists' shop. Reinhardt should be waiting for you at the tavern right about now, you can get there quickly if you head straight there, but you won't be able to stop by your house without being late.

>Head to the tavern alone

"Damn, we're gonna be late if we don't head there right now. Erika, could you do me a favor and go grab the others? I think they'd appreciate a drink after everything that's happened, but I don't want to keep Reinhardt waiting."

"Sure, I'll go get them. Just don't get into trouble while I'm gone, alright?"

"It'll take hardly five minutes to walk there, what trouble could I possibly get into in five minutes?"

"Hey, I'm not the one who got himself kidnapped twice in one month."

"Oh just go get the others already."

Erika, finally done giving you a hard time, heads back to the house while you head the opposite way, towards the tavern.

-----------
You find Reinhardt waiting for you outside the tavern. The tavern, you notice, has several wooden boards patching it's walls, but unlike Arniel's shop it seems all the holes have been fixed already.

"Took you long enough, thought you'd forgotten where everything was while you were gone."

"Sorry, just got held up talking to Arniel. What happened here though, the tavern owner already finished fixing the place?"

"Yeah, from what I hear the place was looking pretty bad this morning. Holes in the floor, the ceiling, scorch marks all over, terrible. The owner got everything fixed up so quickly because apparently he was giving free drinks to anybody who'd help him fix the place up."

"Damn, lot of people must have come for the free drinks then."

"Are you surprised? After everything that happened yesterday, I'd have been here myself if I hadn't slept in. Come on, let's head in before they run out of space."
>>
>>40058610
The inside of the tavern is absolutely packed with people tonight. You'd guess it's because people want to forget what happened yesterday, or because they want to celebrate not getting killed by the first demonic attack in centuries, maybe both. Whatever the case, you have a hard time finding seats anywhere. All the stools are taken, so you search for an empty table and, thankfully, find one that still has two seats. You'd guess the rest were taken by others so they could sit with their own friends.

Just as Reinhardt said, you can see a lot of places where boards were placed as a rough patch to keep out the elements.

A while after you've taken a seat, one of the barmaids stops by your table and asks for your orders. You almost feel sorry for her, the tavern's barmaids must be overwhelmed with all this business. The owner must be having a wonderful time counting all the gold he's making though.

"Well, I don't know about you Sieg, but after nearly getting killed by a bunch of horned freaks, I just want something that'll help me forget their ugly faces. I'll have a big mug of the heaviest stuff you've got, don't care what it is."

"I'll have whatever he's having." You tell the barmaid, handing her the gold you owe for the drink.

>0 Gold remaining

"Well I'll be damned, and you're usually the one who sticks to the light stuff."

"Like you said, a lot happened yesterday. Might as well celebrate."

The barmaid jots down both of your orders and takes it back to the owner at the counter. A moment later she comes back with two large mugs filled with dark brown liquid. You can smell it even before she puts it on the table.

"Here you go, two mugs of Black Mountain Whiskey, the strongest stuff we have. Don't drink it too fast." She warns, before leaving to take another patron's order.

You pick up the mug and bring it up to your mouth. The smell alone is almost enough to singe your eyebrows. Already starting to wonder if you made a mistake, you take a tentative sip. It burns your throat on the way down, and you blink twice in surprise at just how strong this stuff is. Yeah, this was probably a mistake, but damn is it good, even better than what Gunther makes.

"Aureus damn that's good stuff." Reinhardt says, setting his mug down with a thump. "How are you holding up?"

"I'm thinking this was a mistake." You confess, taking another tentative sip anyways.

"Hey, I'll drink it if you don't want it."

"No way, you're trouble enough when you're sober, and even worse when your drunk. If I let you drink two of these, you'll probably get yourself killed."
>>
>>40059380
"I'd argue, but you're probably right." Reinhardt admits with a shrug, before taking another drink and setting it down. "So, how've you been Sieg? First some looney comes to tell me something about you and a giant, then demons attack and I find you about to faint after kicking the One-Armed Wonder's armored ass. I thought you were going to the tower to stay out of trouble, sounds like you've just found more of it."

"Yeah, guess you've got a point there." Reinhardt says, drinking from his mug again. "Seriously though, that sword has been nothing but trouble. You really should get rid of it man, before you get dragged into a crusade."

'I had almost forgotten how unpleasant your friend is.' Galadriel complains from the back of your mind. For some reason, something feels different about her when she speaks, though you're not sure what.

"It's not that easy Reinhardt, getting rid of the sword isn't the best idea right now with a crusade coming. The demons started this fight, what makes you think they won't continue while the sword's sitting at the bottom of a lake?"

"Yeah, I guess you've got a point. Still, you need to hurry up and find someone to take it off your hands, before people start thinking you're the real deal."

"It's a little late for that. Alastor's got his eye on me, sword or no."

To your surprise, Reinhardt actually laughs. You stare at him dumbfounded, not sure what you said that was even remotely funny. He finally stifles his chuckles, and takes another drink from his mug.

"C'mon man, don't joke about stuff like that. You could make someone shit their pants if they take you seriously."

"I'm not joking."

"Come on, stop it already, I said not to joke about that shit."

"Reinhardt, I'm not fucking joking. You think I would lie about something like that, now of all times?"

The grin on Reinhardt's face starts to fade, replaced by a serious expression. He sets his mug to the side and leans in closer to whisper.

"You're serious?"

"Yes I serious Reinhardt, what would I have to gain by lying?"

"Ffffuck, how the Void did you run into an Aureus damn demon lord?"

"It sure wasn't by choice, I'll tell you that."

"Well what the Void did you do that made him notice you?"

"Remember that 'looney' who told you about the behemoth?"

"That was real? I thought you were full of shit, and told him to tell me that as a joke. You know, like when one of the guards says he caught 10 purse snatchers in a week."

"Where the Void does any of that sound like a joke to you Reinhardt?"

Reinhardt groans in exasperation, taking what's probably a much larger swig of his whiskey than the barmaid would have recommended. He then leans in and whispers again, the smell of booze on his breath clear evidence that the whiskey is starting to hit him.

"Sieg, you have GOT to get rid of that thing, before that monster finds you again. Give it back to them, tell them to find someone else, I don't know but don't hold onto it, you'll get yourself killed!"

"It's not that easy Reinhardt."

"Why not? Just take it back to whoever's in charge and tell him 'I'm done, find someone else'."

"I can't do that Reinhardt."
>>
>>40060886
"Well why the fuck not?! You're just the guy who got dragged into babysitting the sword until someone else comes along to take it, you're not the actual Void damned Champion."

"And what would you say if I actually am?"

A look of horror and realization comes over Reinhardt's face.

"No."

"Reinhardt-"

"Sieg, NO. What the fuck are you thinking?"

"It's already done Reinhardt, there's nothing else I could do any-"

"Sieg, what the Void has gotten into you?! Do you WANT to die?"

"I'm not going to di-"

"Really? Then tell me, how many others in your position are alive today."

"That's not-"

"How many?"

"Haa...One."

"And who is that one?"

"Andras."

"And look how well that's gone for him."

"This is different Reinhardt, this won't end like last time."

"Really? What makes you so special that you can do better than everyone else that tried before you?"

"I don't know, but I'm not going to-"

"Siegfried, you're fucking delusional, and if you go through with this you're gonna end up-"

"Oh for the love of Aureus Reinhardt, will you just SHUT THE FUCK UP!"
>>
>>40060919
Reinhardt, caught off guard by your sudden outburst, actually does shut up. There is an awkward pause between you, and you thank the Void that the tavern was too loud for anyone to overhear your little whisper-shouting match with Reinhardt. The both of you drink in silence, and you can feel the Black Mountain Whiskey start clouding your head, though your anger was already doing a pretty good job of that. For a moment, you wonder if neither of you will say anything else the rest of the night, at least until the others get there, when Reinhardt finally speaks up.

"You know if you go through with this, you'll probably end up dead."

"I know."

Reinhardt takes a deep breathe and sighs. "Haaaa...When do you head back to the tower?"

"The day after tomorrow." You answer, taking another sip of your whiskey.

"Alright then, I'm going with you."

You sit up and stare at Reinhardt, caught by surprise. "Didn't you just say I'd probably get killed?"

"I did."

"Then why?"

"Are you stupid, why wouldn't I? We've had each others backs since we were kids, of course I'd go with you. I still think you're an idiot, and I still don't like that Aureus damn sword, but what sort of friend would I be if I just sat on my ass and let you get yourself killed?"

"You know there's a crusade coming, right?"

"Yup."

"And we'll probably end up dying horribly under some demon's foot, right?"

"Well aware."

"And you're still sure you want to come along?"

"Without a doubt."

"...Thanks man."

Reinhardt leans back in his chair and laughs. "Don't get all mushy and shit on me, I'm just doing what I think id right. Stupid, but right. Now come on, drink your damn booze, if I'm going to run off and get myself killed I want to at least remember that I had fun before I left."

----------
After that, the two of you went back to enjoying yourselves. You share stories, told jokes, and continued to drink.

And drink.

And drink.

Something told you you were going to have a horrible headache in the morning, but you didn't care, you were having a great time. Despite your intoxication, you'd actually only finished about half of your enormous drink, while Reinhardt was 3/4ths through. Strongest stuff indeed.
>>
>>40062034
At some point, your honor guard finally arrived at the tavern, but due to the large crowds, your honor guard had a hard time finding you. Before you can wave them over though, Reinhardt stops you and whispers.

"Shieg, ishn't dat dat one bitsch that kept yelling at you. Whatsch she doin' here, an whosh da resht of dem?"

"Shesh not a bitsch, Rainhard. Shesh cool, exshept when she ish a bitsch. And da resht of dem's my honur gard, dey wash out fer me"

"Tell me who dey ar den. Like whaht about dat one, the one wif da shtoney fash?"

"Thash Justine, shesh like Erika but shesh cahmer when she yellsh."

"Ish da one wit da pointy hat yer friend too?"

"Dash Joan, she'sh not a bitsch at all. She needsh a Ravin ta talk though."

"Whoose pointy earsh then?"

"Dash Nerillian. Fuckin' show off, shootin' arrowsh an shit. He's cool tho, even if he doesh show off."

"Okey, and who da fucksh the guy in da armor?"

"Ganalon, he'sh a priesht or somethin'"

"Why'sh he wearing that huge armor hear?"

"I dunno man, maybe he'sh ugly."

"An whaht about prety boy dere?"

"He'sh Rolan. He'sh shtupid tho, can't tell when women like him."

"Thash fuckin' shtupid"

"It ish, right?!"

'Are you alright Siegfried? You don't sound good.' You hear Galadriel ask from the back of your head. She sounds different though, like she's struggling to speak.

'Ahm fine.' You answer, unable to form cohesive sentences even in your mind at this point.

'Perhaps you should stop. You're not acting like yourself, and now even I'm starting to...feel strange.'

'Hwat doo you meen shtrange?'

'I...don't entirely understand it myself. My head feels funny, and I find it harder to maintain my balance.'

'Ahr yew drunk?'

'I do not know. I know that mortals begin to act strange after drinking certain things, but I do not entirely understand eet, er, it.'

'Hahaha, yer gettin' drunk. Itsh fine, nuthin' wrong wit gettin' drunk onesh in a hwhile'

'..I do not like this feeling. Siegfried, please stop.'

You mentally sigh. 'Jusht a leetle longer, I haven't done dish in a long tiem.'

'...Fine, just a little longer then.'

'Danksh!'

By now, your honor guard has finally found you and approach the table where you and Reinhardt are sitting. Erika is the first to speak with you.

"There you are, sorry we took so long. We got a little lost between the house and here."

'Dash fine, me an' Rainhard had a sheeriosh tawk while hyou guysh were gon'"

"...Are you okay? You sound funny."

"Ahm fine! Nevar bettar!"

"Are you drunk already? I thought you said your supposed to take it easy and not drink too much."

"Dat wash den, dish'sh now. Gettin' washted ish fine onesh in ah hwhile."

"Oh Aureus, he's absolutely smashed." Roland says, laughing at your inebriation.

"His mug's only half empty though." Nerillian observes. "Is he that much of a light-weight?"

"Ah, I recognize that! That's Black Mountain whiskey." Ganelon reveals.

"He's right, I recognize the smell anywhere." Justine comments.

"How do you know that?" Erika asks.

"It's a recipe that comes from the Black Mountains in Belmore, I recognize it because it was born there."

"Okay, then how do you know Justine?"

"Because any professional monster hunter would recognize it."

"Why?"

"Because one of it's uses is bait, to intoxicate larger monsters and attack them while they're inebriated. It's also used for the annual Strongman Contest in Belmore, where one of the competitions is to see who can drink the most without getting sick or passing out."
>>
>>40063053
"Wait, the Void is that doing here then? Siegfried, stop drinking that, it's too much."

Erika reaches out to take the mug from you, but you jerk it away from her and stand up, not willing to let go of your whiskey so easily.

"Noh! Dish shtuff ish grate! Ahm fine, ish not gonna hurt me, wash!"

Before anyone can stop you, you lift your mug to your lips and turn it all the way up, chugging down the whiskey as quickly as you can. Were you in your right mind, you would never do something stupid like that, but then again you're not in your right mind right now.

'Siegfried, what are you doing?!' Galadriel asks, panicked.

'Ahm showin' dat red-head bitsch that ah can handle a little whishkey.'

'Siegfried, slow down. You're drinking too fast, I feel..'

What happens next is a blur to you. You can't remember everything, your memory marred by the booze, but you distinctly remember something roaring, then you fell and knocked over the table, shouting something about eyes. You remember your friends crowding over you, saying something you can't quite recall, and the rest is black.
>>
>>40063105
When you finally awake, you find you're lying on your bed, with a wet washcloth laid over your forehead. You see Ganelon sitting next to your bed, waiting patiently for you to wake up.

"Ah, I see you're finally awake. How are you feeling?"

You raise a hand to your head and groan. "Ugh...I feel like shit. What happened?"

"We don't know, you just started panicking and fell unconscious. The tavern owner thinks you might have drank too fast and started hallucinating."

"Hallucinating?"

"Yes, it's a side effect of drinking too much Black Mountain Whiskey too quickly. Something to do with the brewing process, I confess I don't understand it much myself. It's why they told you to drink slowly, apparently. They've taken Black Mountain Whiskey off the menu due to what happened."

"Was it that bad?"

"It was concerning, yes. You appear to be alright now though. Are you hungry?"

"Yeah, a little."

"Alright then, you should get up and get dressed then. Roland is cooking breakfast. I'll go fetch some water for you as well, perhaps that will help you sober up."
>>
Alright, I'm going to call it a night there. I'll stick around to answer questions. Next run will either be Wednesday or Monday depending on if I feel like running tomorrow. Finals are over so this weekend I'm going to be with family and friends.

Little announcement too while I'm at it for those of you who don't follow the ask.fm, once we get back to the White Watchtower I'm going to go on a short hiatus. Don't worry, I have no intention of abandoning the quest, but I do feel like I could use a little break. I might run something else in the meantime, possibly something 40k related, but no guarantees. When I get back, I'll probably be changing up the mechanics for the quest.

That's it, hope you guys had fun, I'll see you all next time.

It won't, it's just a thing where if while I'm on hiatus I get an urge to run but I'm not ready to run HSQ yet then I might run that. It'll probably be either a one-shot, really short, or something I only run while I'm on break, but it won't detract from HSQ.

>I don't know what that is but ill check it out.
http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Lamenters
Tl;DR - Space Marines that are the closest thing to actual good guys in 40k but have shitty luck. Read the part about Slaughterhouse III, it's great.
>>40063884
Yeah, as it is I've come to realize that eventually the numbers in HSQ are going to get kind of ridiculous, with level 10 possibly carrying a +50 melle attack bonus with it. As such, I'd have to up the DCs if I stick to the normal system, which raises the question of "how can normal people even fight that thing?". So, I'm thinking of switching over to a system similar but not identical to the 40k rpgs system, where you have stats and try to roll under them to succeed, with the DC rising or falling depending on how difficult the task is. I'm going to be hammering out the details over the hiatus, as well as doing a bit of planning.
>>
>>40064004
I honestly don't think that's the part you should worry about.
The modifier taking more and more importance makes sense, since our character is gradually moving from average city guard to professional demonslayer. He should absolutely become capable of near impossible martial feats, (feats that of course translate by absurdly high 100+ rolls) since y'know, you need these to fight bigass strong demons.

As for the question of "how can normal people even fight that thing?", I thought the point was that they mostly couldn't. Hence why crusaders exist.

What I was talking about wasn't the numbers but the actual combat. The power attack/regular attack/defensive fighting triad is honestly uninteresting and strategically barren. That's what you really need to fix. Maybe by letting us learn custom moves we can use in certain situations for example.
>>
>>40064238
>As for the question of "how can normal people even fight that thing?", I thought the point was that they mostly couldn't. Hence why crusaders exist.
This is true, but what I'm getting at is that at a certain point, even mooks would have bizarre DCs. I'm absolutely fine with demon lords or their generals having DCs like that, but average rank-and-file demons should have DCs that are at least possible if the commoner with his pa's axe gets lucky. Maybe that's just me being nitpicky, I dunno.

>What I was talking about wasn't the numbers but the actual combat. The power attack/regular attack/defensive fighting triad is honestly uninteresting and strategically barren.
This is something I've heard before looking through the archives. I'd love to fix combat and make it more interesting, but I'm not entirely sure how to go about doing that.

>Maybe by letting us learn custom moves we can use in certain situations for example.
Interesting, what exactly do you mean by that? Like, something in JRPGs where you have attack and then you have special attacks that have a chance to stun, blind, do massive damage, etc.?
>>
>>40064502
make power attack have a bigger debuff but make it do a shit ton more dmg and make defense counter magic
>>
>>40064502
>I'm absolutely fine with demon lords or their generals having DCs like that, but average rank-and-file demons should have DCs that are at least possible if the commoner with his pa's axe gets lucky.

Maybe that's the point you know? That when Champions get strong enough they can wipe the floor with mook demons like its dynasty warriors. We wouldn't even need to roll, just add it to the fluff and have us fight the big lieutenants.
>>
>>40064615
Is that really all it takes?
>>40064901
>We wouldn't even need to roll, just add it to the fluff and have us fight the big lieutenants.
Hm, fair point. Once we get to the point of actual large scale battles I was thinking I'd switch from rolling to handle mooks and move more towards rolling to deal with the one in charge.
>>
>>40065002
>Is that really all it takes?

Nah its all about finding that balance between making us think but also not making it too number crunchy and maintaining good pacing.

I'll keep spit balling possible ideas on ask when I think of them.
