You pant desperately, the workout pushing your tiny body to its limits. You know you're supposed to be stronger and faster than this, damn it, and the only way to get back to your prime is through exercise and... well, being a week and a couple days old you don't have much control over your diet, but still! Your legs burn, your chest aches, and your muscles scream at you but you force yourself through another set of squats as your mother sets about her work, occasionally looking over at you with the concern one usually reserves for the mentally infirm. Your brother had questioned it, but when he realized the only answer he was likely to receive was "Getting big," he left well enough alone and vanished into the warrens. He was growing taller by the day, while you still remained short. It was starting to gnaw at the back of your mind, but you were determined not to think about it. There were more important things at hand, like getting ready to go outside! That meant you had to be strong, and fast, and then stronger and faster. You knew all the right ways to make this happen, but as your wobbly legs gave out from under you, pitching you onto the woven rug with a yelp, you realized that having your body conspiring against you was going to make this so much harder.

Your mother set aside her knitting and moved to your side, stooping to scoop you up into her arms. "My little pup, why do you do this? It has been days. You are starting to scare me..." She whimpered and nuzzled your ear as you panted, desperately trying to relieve the ache and heat in your muscles, too tired even to squirm away from your mother's ministrations. How could you even begin to explain to her? You had tried, of course, but she had only tutted at you and told you not to worry about it, that your brother and cousins would always be there to take care of you, and then when you went above Sylea would be with you to keep you safe.

>>

"Small pups do not need to worry about being strong. Better to be sneaky, and stay away from trouble." She had tapped your nose pointedly at that, and sent you to help some of your older cousins with grinding herbs and roots for medicines. To your credit, you had managed to stay focused on the task for a whole hour - primarily, because the myriad of scents were something magical to you - before you'd lost interest and snuck away to uncle Baltas's cave to listen to more of his adventuring tales. You hadn't been to see Sylea since you'd initially met her, your father making you promise on threat of never seeing the sun or the flowstone again, that you wouldn't go down without an escort.

Baltas had no children of his own, and he was only too delighted to share his experiences. An old bold, missing an eye with a weather-beaten hide notched all about with scars and a bristling beard, he looked terrifying at first glance, but his one good eye was playful and sparkled with impishness whenever he spied you. You felt in him something of a kindred soul, as even in his advanced age he moved with a purpose and a barely-contained energy. "So there I were, ya? Standing at Cora's side, hammer held above my head, and I am screaming 'I weel crush you like grape, damn bug!' The wasps, they no hear. They stupid. They come and try to sting us, to lay their young in our bellies. Well, I had tried to warn them, ya?" He slammed his fist into his other palm, and made a wet sort of squishing sound that gave you a fit of the giggles. "After that, the snake girl and I, we parted ways. She was a good girl, but she had enough of adventuring. Missed her crazy pig-eating sister and mother. So, she went to her home, and I to mine. I miss her sometimes, but I know she is fine. There was a fire in her. Like in you!" He poked you lightly on the nose with a long, crooked finger. "She will have a happy life. Make some lucky man very fearful, have many young snakes of her own."
>>
>>40103543
"Why would making someone scared make little snakes?" You cocked your head to the side curiously. He had only laughed and refused to answer, sending you home to your mother.

Finally, your muscles stopped aching enough that you could wrest yourself from your mother's arms, shaking yourself all over to work the blood back into your limbs and once again bring to ruin her attempts to corral your wild hair. She let you go, shaking her head in a way that all parents must at some point in their lives when they believe their young have lost their minds. You stood nearly to her chest now, your brother easily to her shoulders, and knelt down as she was you could meet her eye to eye. She reached for the water pitcher and a rag, intending to wipe the light sheen of sweat from your fur - by force, if necessary - to find it empty. She muttered a curse and looked about for your brother, finding the cave empty but for the both of you. "Damn... why is he never around when needed..."

The gears in your head slowly whirr, teeth clicking and clacking together. Empty pitcher equals needing water, the warren gets water from snow, and snow is all-

"Me! Me me me! I'll go! I can get it! Oh, let me let me!" You hop in place, and then from one foot to the other, waving your arm about above your head with a huge smile on your face like an overly-enthusiastic student who absolutely knows the answer to a teacher's question. Your mother looks at you stunned, torn between crushing your spirits and letting you down easy. She takes a moment to reply, a hard grip on the pitcher as though you might snatch it from her hands and vanish without a look back.

"Oh, little pup, it is kind to offer, but I think your brother-"

"No! I wanna! I wanna do it! I can go, I can be quick and it won't be any trouble since there will be someone in the caverns just below! There's nothing in the upper caverns! Uncle Baltas said so! Said they'd all be out hunting since it's going to start getting... um... windery? Wandery? Wind... colder." You nod, certain that no firmer or convincing answer had ever been given before or would ever from that point on. Your mother whined, her own tail curling about her feet as her ears folded back. She cast one more sidelong glance at the opening to your cave, as though by will alone she could produce your littermate.

"It is too dangerous, I think. There are things above ground that would make quite the snack of a tiny thing like you, and you are so sweet already!" She smiled brightly down at you. Your frown told her in no uncertain terms her attempt at flattery was denied.
>>
>>40103734
"I'm not so small! I'm almost as tall as the table! Taller, even! There's nothin' out there that can mess with me 'cept dragons, and I bet auntie Sylea could eat them too!" You snatch the pitcher and are out the door, your mother shouting after you, before another moment passes. You wend your way through the warrens, this time avoiding the major caverns and sticking to the side paths, less likely to be spotted. Several times, you almost run headlong into some cousin or older uncle who wasn't watching where they were going, and had to listen to growled admonitions or dodge a clumsy cuff to your ear before the both of you moved on. Part of you wondered, deep down, if this kind of conduct was normal. Your family, both near and warren-wide, were a very honest people. When they were angry, they let it show, and often came to blows when the disagreement was severe enough... but just as quickly, all was forgiven, and uncles who had been brutally punching at one-another hours before would be found drunk and singing happily together, all sins forgiven. Your younger cousins were often cuffed or swatted at when they stepped out of line, or a quick growl enough to put them back on the straight and narrow, but even then there was no malice in it. There were very clear expectations in the warren of what you were meant to do, and for your own good - or the sake of the status quo - you were kept to those expectations. Baltas was the exception, but most adults considered him just this side of cacklingly insane. Given the large collection of skulls and different pieces of preserved monster pieces he had in his warren, you might be inclined to agree. If they weren't just so cool, that is.
>>
>>40103748
You smell the change in the air before you feel it - the sour stale of the cave giving way to the sweet cold of fresh, open air. You speed on, bare paws slapping on the stones in your haste. You'd never been outside before! This was going to be so cool! I mean, of course, since there was snow everywhere and everyone says that snow is cold and so is the wind because it's just really still water and in order for water to be really still it has to be really cold but none of that matters because you're going outside and-

You jump out of the small side tunnel you'd been running along to avoid the older cousins and uncles standing watch, into a huge, empty cavern that dwarfed even the shaft leading to the flowstone depths where Sylea lived. Your childish enthusiasm stuck in your stomach, the slow building apprehension rising to replace it. You hadn't been paying attention to where you were running, which bends you were taking in the paths. The stone up here looked different, not at all the comforting grey press of warm granite, but something dull and brownish, and slightly damp. The air smelled rotten, like the air in the lower mines but without the hot smell to take the stink from it. And it was heavy, the air, and damp. It made your fur cling to your skin, your tail, ears, and hair alike beginning to droop. You heard clattering ahead of you, like stone on stone... or, in the darkness, something sinister with a taste for kobold pups moving in for the kill.

You realize quite suddenly you are lost, and alone.

Overshadowed by feelings of pride, wanting to prove ourselves capable of the simple task of fetching water. But adventure is nice too.

>>40103847
Your enthusiasm may have been curtailed, but it takes more than that to get you down! This place isn't so big, so by that flawless logic there's not a thing here that could threaten you! You're... well, you don't have a name yet, but you're the strongest! You're the bestest! Nothing's going to-

A crack and a hiss immediately behind you makes you jump almost a full foot in the air and three forward, the pitcher slipping from your hands and cracking on the ground. You whip around, fists clenched, settling into a stance that you vaguely remember from some time before, more muscle memory from anything. Defensive, ready to block an incoming attacker. Although, being around three feet tall and ridiculously, adorably fuzzy, the effect is a little diminished. The stream of sulfurous steam gushes from the vent that had just opened where you had been standing, just as quickly dissipating and leaving nothing but a damp crack in the rock. Okay, that was... that was unexpected. You can stop pounding now, heart, we're not going to be eaten... and nobody saw that, right? No. No, everything is just fine. Wait... the pitcher!

You stoop down to where you'd dropped it, grabbing it by the one remaining handle, and looking crestfallen at the long crack running neatly along the outside. This... this can be fixed, surely. There has to be, like, rubber cement or something, right? In this... semi-primitive... pseudo-medieval... mining community... with no trees... or anything to make glue out of, really.
>>

A breath hitches in your throat and tears sting your eyes. You broke it. Momma had told you once that it was really old... her mom's mom's. You didn't mean to! It was an accident! You hear another low crack, and another hiss of steam as another vent opens alongside the first. You narrow your eyes at it, giving a high-pitched, ineffective growl as if you could intimidate the very earth it- huh? It stopped?

You see something wriggling in the crack, liquid bubbling and hissing around a shiny black mass, along with a high-pitched whining sound like a kettle left on to boil. The thing keeps wriggling, growing bigger, until with another crack, the gap in the stone widens and a shiny wet arm wrenches out of the earth. The thing stretches out, its movements jerky as though it were unaccustomed to having form. Something bright appears in the depths of the mass, almost like an eye. It turns toward you, and another arm emerges from the center of the mass, the vague outline of a humanoid shape beginning to take form. The "head" is split nearly in half with what appears to be a mirthless, horrible jack-o-lantern grin as this thing starts to take your shape.

To elaborate; it's taking our shape, rather than a big monsterous shape, and our shape is not exactly very impressive, so I rather doubt it's trying to intimidate us. The grin is a bit worrisome, but otherwise there's no real reason to be afraid, and we don't want to be the one to start a fight, do we?

The thing rises to its full height - which is to say, your full height - and keeps growing till it's double your size, regarding you with its single glowing "eye." The whole thing gives it a slightly lopsided, and very wrong, sort of appearance. You're not at all worried by that at this point, though. You run a hand over the broken, jagged edge where the handle of the jug used to be, your little chest seething with anger. "You... made me... break... gramma's... jug!"

The ground is littered with broken stones, the jug itself feels fairly heavy in your little hands, and you still feel yourself standing in that weird stance you slipped into.

Give me a d100 for something, and you want to roll low. Then...

"Wait!" The creature pulls back, perhaps surprised at the sudden volume of your voice in the otherwise quiet cavern. You turn to the side, carefully setting the jug out of the way and giving it a little twist to make sure it's secure, and won't tip over. You not to yourself before you turn back to the creature, scooping up a smooth, hefty stone from the cavern floor. You size the creature up and grin. "You don't look so big! Come on!" Your muscles don't hurt, you're not short of breath. You feel an almost surreal calm settle over you, like you've done this before, like the motions are completely rote at this point. The thing smacks its 'lips' together with a wet slap and lunges, malformed hands reaching out for you, arms and fingers extending like tentacles.

You spin on the ball of your foot and kick off backward, the simple motion carrying you well away from where the beast's 'arms' are now pooled on the cavern floor, sizzling as they eat into the stone. You land gracefully, your tail sweeping side to side partly from excitement and partly to help you keep balance, as you close one eye and stick your tongue out to help you aim.

What feels like a lifetime ago, one of your friends had tried to get you into some of her hobbies. She tried to teach you to play video games, to get you to sit for hours on end and stare at a television screen with her. It just never did take - you would always be more comfortable outside, running and playing with other neighborhood kids - but one thing always stuck with you. "Aim for the glowing spot. That's shorthand for 'This is what will hurt me.'" Well, when life gives you a big glowing 'fuck off' target...

You whip the rock with a practiced snap of your arm, the stone sailing across the cavern and slamming into the beast's 'head,' sending spatters of tar sizzling all about and almost dislodging the gleaming yellow core. It rounds on you, its 'arms' falling from its 'shoulders' as two tentacles sprout from where they had been, and then another two below those. It weaves and bobs left to right, regarding you carefully, almost as if weighing whether or not the meal is worth the risk. You bend and scoop up another stone, ready to move.

Degrees of sucess. Basically, when you roll, the QM takes into account how much it differs than the targeted roll by 10. For example, if to hit someone requires a roll of 50 and you roll a 20, you succeeded with 2 degrees of Success, which gives you a better outcome than succeeding with one DOS
>>
>>40105085

Not sure how that would be disfavorable in this case, that is, unless he meant "If I counted both your 99 and your 1, your roll would be pretty shit"

we would succeed and then immediately die?

The unnamed kobold pup takes the mound, and the catcher looks nervous. She shakes off the first call... the second... and she nods the third. The windup... and the pitch!

The beast lunches with a hiss, bearing down on you with a haste it didn't seem capable of a moment ago. Still, you remain undaunted, and let the stone fly. You had expected maybe another solid blow to the core of the thing. What you hadn't expected, however, was the strength of the throw would pierce the thing's head entirely, carrying the core through along with the stone, and that both would impact the opposite wall with the core shattering. The tar creature's body, the core now destroyed, falls apart immediately and begins to evaporate, only slightly pitting the stone floor before it sublimates into the air. You shake your head. That was easy! And mom was worried! Hah!

You turn and move to grab up the jug, but as you reach for it, you notice your hand shaking. Huh... weird. Why? It's not like the thing was a threat. You feel a lump in your throat, your heart pounding. You look to the broken jug, the deep pits in the floor where the beast had lunged at you. If it could melt into stone, what could it have done to flesh? You fought this thing? It could have killed you! What the hell were you thinking!? You're a pup, not a warrior! You didn't even have a damn weapon!

That's right... you didn't even have a weapon... and you still won! Your emotions roil over one-another; pride and terror snapping and clawing at one-another in your chest, seeking victory for control of your heart. Your legs tremble, threatening to drop you at a moment's notice. Your stomach churns. Barely ten days old, and already coming so close once more to your own mortality. And yet, you stared death in the face, and you didn't just smile, you laughed!
>>
Should be a 1 63 vs his 3 97
>>
>>40105125
No, I'm still taking the best roll unless by some bizarre miracle he'd rolled a 1 and a 100. In which case, you kill it, but you'd be getting all the acid burns.

Swallowed a star? Fire in you? Maybe your mom and Sylea were right. For the first time, you don't feel quite like a runt, like a small bold who needs coddling and protecting, so desperate to show off that she'd run headlong into danger just to prove she's capable. Pride swells inside of you, and you have to let it out!

This is a really, terribly strange dice system you are using. So, the first die should be low, and the second die should be high? Why not, you know, just have one standard objective? Otherwise, you are going to confuse a boatload of anons.

>>40105183
No, both should be low. If the second had been 100, that would have been a critical failure.

Your howl echoes through the caverns, the volume and intensity something you didn't expect your tiny body capable of. Still, there is something undaunted in it, that speaks to your prowess, to your victory! Your tail wags, your ears perked. Your heart pounds in your chest, and you let out another long, loud howl. Somewhere in the dark, you see a handful of small, half-seen creatures scurry away in fear, doing their best to avoid your notice. Boldened by victory, you grab the jug. The remnants of the creature are no more, but no matter! The snow will not melt before you get home, and by then there will be something else to put it into. Triumphant, you run full-bore through the caverns, tongue lolling out of your mouth, eyes wide and taking in everything! The closer you get to the surface, the more the scents of the upper world toy with your senses. Pine! Fresh air and snow! In the distance, something vaguely briny! Finally, up ahead, you see light, and you burst through the mouth of the cave!

Immediately, you sink up to your waist into a snowbank, immobilized momentarily both in shock and from your legs being buried in snow.
>>
>>40105228
Your crit was an instant kill, versus just being another damaging attack.
>>
>>40105228
We are rolling low, and we rolled lower on the rolls.

Low numbers good 1 beats 3, 63 beats 97
>>
>>40105247

So his implication is that "While 1 is good, it is not better than 3 by very much". That means that the first round wouldn't have ended it and the young protagonist would have taken some lumps.
>>
>>40105229
It's cold, and wet, but it's also so fluffy and bright! Your tail wags, dislodging the bank around you and freeing your legs. You set the jug down near the cave entrance and take a long look around. In the distance, you see a sea of white-flocked green, taller than even Sylea! Black specks wing in the air above it, and rising above even those you see a tall stone spire stretching into the sky, crumbling and in disrepair. The scents are even more wonderful now that you've escaped the cave! The pine of the sea of green is so intense and fresh, almost painful though, and undercutting it all manner of musky odors of beasts, the cloying sweetness of verious berries. Even at this distance, they are as sharp to you as if you were standing right over them. A raucous chattering from inside the forest sends more of the black specks into the air, and you laugh despite yourself. You take another step out into the snow, intent on heading out and exploring, when a hand clamps over your shoulder and jerks you back.

"What do you think you're doing topside, little cousin!? I heard a howl, and now I find you out here without a guardian? You will explain, now!"

"Momma needed some water and so I took the jug and came up here but then there was this hiss and it made me drop the jug, wasn't my fault, and then this nasty gooey monster came out of the ground and-"

The older kobold frowns as you rattle on about the monster, the fight, and how you single-handedly took it down. It's clear he doesn't believe you, so after you pack the jug tight as you can with snow, you lead him to the cavern and show him the pits in the ground, and what's left of the monster's core. He sucks in a breath, and you're absolutely sure he's really impressed.

"It just had the one yellow heart, yes?" You nod quick enough to make your ears flap, tail wagging at being taken so seriously by an older cousin. He nods. "Must have been a young one then..." He quickly scoops up the core pieces into a small bag and ties it off to his belt before scooping you up into his arm. "You were very brave, but very stupid. Fighting is for older cousins, not for runts. The next time, you run! Understand?"

You huff indignantly, ready to argue, but a low growl from the older kobold silences you. You pout, ears folded back and just give a curt nod. He nods likewise, and sets off back toward the warrens along the main trail. Soon enough, you are being worried over by your mother, every inch of you inspected for damage after your elder cousin explained what had happened. Your mom had been upset about the jug, but she was absolutely livid about you fighting the creature. The seven worst words a child could hear had left her lips: "Just wait till your father gets home." Baltas had been called over, and a few other of your older cousins, and soon your cave was almost full to bursting

Time to learn from the adult that magma-bros are allies, and us straight up killing one will lead to a bloody war, to be fought right upon the warrens doorstep.

"A whole colony, you think? Maybe they come up from the core, ya?" Baltas asked as he pored over an old book, looking for something desperately.

"No idea. The little cousin just said she fought one, small, with a single core. I didn't even know they were still around here. Driven out, I thought."

"That could mean trouble... if there is colony, we'll have to move." Baltas shook his head sadly, flipping another page. The older cousin who had found you outside barked with laughter. "Never. These are our warrens. Tar-beast, dragons, or stone sharks, we'll drive them all off!" Your cousins nodded and barked their agreements, but the few uncles who had gathered just grumbled and muttered amongst themselves. Baltas said nothing, flipping another page with an "Aha!" and setting the book out on the table. He turned toward your seat, once more in the corner with your nose to the wall, and beckoned you over. Tail drooping, you scrambled over and he pulled you up into his lap. "Is this what you fought, little one?"

You looked at it and nodded quickly. "But... this one has four eyes, and the one I killed only had one. Why is this one different?" There were words on the page as well. At least, you assumed they were words, but the atmosphere of the room stole your usual curiosity and enthusiasm, and you thought better of asking right then and there.

"The one you killed was young, ya? As they grow, they grow more core. When they get too many, they break apart and become young again." You tilt your head in confusion, and he simply ruffles your hair.

"Where would we go? These warrens have been our home for a long time..." your father frowns, drumming his fingers on the table. You look to him, a whimper escaping your throat. You were accustomed to seeing him upset, but never apprehensive or worried. Baltas lifted you, passing you off to Eigan, who took you in his arms absent-mindedly and held you close.

"There is the city, ya? They would have us. Strong backs for strong work. Men to work cargo at the harbor, or to build, and work stone." Your father's expression darkened and he glared daggers at Baltas, who weathered it with his usual unflappable nature.

"Never. The seas will burn first." He spit on the floor of the cave, as though he had a foul taste in his mouth, and a few of your uncles followed suit. Baltas sighed, scratching behind his ear in frustration.

"Perhaps we should discuss this slowly. Give it time. Perhaps the young one simply got lost. Perhaps there is no colony, and we are worrying for nothing." Your mother refills your father's stein, then her own, before resuming her seat. You reach out for her, and she gives your hand a quick cuff. You pull your hand back, whimpering. You know she's upset, and in time you'll be forgiven, but still, it hurts. Murmurs of assent come from cousin and uncle alike, and with the mood in the cave thoroughly unsettled, the impromptu gathering disperses. Your father shakes his head and rises, setting you back on your feet. He steps into his room, returning a few moments later in his heavy jacket and carrying a pack on his back. Your mother says nothing, but you can't help your curiosity.

"Papa? Where are you going? Back to work? You don't take a bag when you work." There is a note of worry in your voice, which he allays by lifting you in his arms and nuzzling you nose to nose.

"I think I must speak to somebody about these goings on, my troublesome little snowflake... and it is time I thought about naming you and your brother. For these things, I have to speak to somebody above." He sets you back down and crosses to your mother, sweeping her up into a bear hug and nuzzling her likewise, nose-to-nose. "I will return in a few days. Grigor will watch the cave and see to your needs. Try and keep our little runaway at hand. Perhaps tie her to the mantle?" He chuckles softly and your mother just gives him a playful cuff before he musses your hair. Your brother meets him at the door and receives the same affections before your father steps into the warrens, heading toward the path leading above.

"Momma, where's papa going?" your brother asks, taking a seat at the table.

Your mother waves off your brother's questions, with a "You'll see," setting about preparing dinner. Soon enough, your belly full and eyes drooping, you're tucked into bed, the fire banked, and all ready to sleep for the night. Except, you're far from tired. You keep thinking about the fight. If that was a young one, then what were older ones like? Bigger? Stronger? And what if they came from deeper, like uncle Baltas had suggested? You sit bolt upright with a gasp. Auntie Sylea and the egg-baby! They didn't know! You whimper, looking between the passage to your parent's room and the passage to the warrens indecisively, ears flattened to your head. Somebody should tell her, but you weren't supposed to go out... but if nobody told her, and she got attacked, and the baby... but you really, really want to be a good girl... but... but...

The next thing you know, you're running down the path toward the flowstone veins, almost as if you were moving without quite realizing it. The slap of your paws on the stone is the only sound, all the miners at home in their beds, most likely. The lanterns shine, lighting your way through the main shaft and once again you grab one to carry along with you through the dark. Soon enough, you come to the little peninsula of stone, but Sylea is nowhere to be seen. Timidly, you step out, and immediately hiss in pain. You fall back on your rump and grab your foot, lifting it with a whimper. A gash in the pad oozes bright crimson, something sharp and vaguely gem-like stuck deep in the flesh. It looks just like the egg...

You whine, partly in pain and partly in worry. You whimper as you try to dig the shell out of your pad, succeeding only in driving it in deeper before, with a grimace, you set about trying to dig it out with a sleek black claw. To your credit, you don't howl in pain no matter how bad you want to. That's something a runt would do, and damn it you aren't a runt! Well, not really. Not where it counts. You finally dislodge the shell, flexing your toes carefully and bringing a new rush of blood to the surface. A drop falls to the stone floor, sizzling when it touches the rocks. You tentatively try to stand; your foot hurts like mad, but you can walk on it.

You take a few limping steps before you slip to your knees with a huff, your foot throbbing and your hand clenched tightly around the piece of shell. You fear the worst, but you already came all this way, and if your mother finds you gone...

"A-auntie Sylea?" you call out, the whine in your voice all but lost amongst the churning magma. No response, so you call again, louder this time. A rumble, a crack, and a loud 'sploosh' are all that answer you as a stalactite dislodges from the ceiling, crashes into one of the rock outcroppings, and lands in the magma sea, breaking the black crust of the surface and revealing more of the angry red below. You shiver, suddenly very cold despite the overwhelming heat. Over the din of the stygian depths, you hear the click-click-click of claws on stone, and see the familiar figure of your aunt leaping stone to stone before she lands on the peninsula before you, blinking sleep from her eyes.

"Little pup, what are you doing here? The hour is late, and surely your parents don't know you're out. You court trouble too willingly..." She scoops you up in her arms, as if sensing your worry and pain. "Come. I cannot leave Djanna for long."

"I'm really really really sorry but I got worried because bad things might be coming and I was worried about you and your egg! There's a bunch of goo monsters and they're nasty and eat rock and they have these cores and-"

"Shh, child, patience. Start from the beginning." She leaps gracefully from stone to stone, carrying you effortlessly along the river of magma. You do just that, telling her about your jaunt to the surface, and the fight with the tar monster, and the meeting with Baltas, and all the cousins and uncles. She seems genuinely impressed by the fight. "You have a strong arm, and a keen eye! Are you sure you are a kobold, and not a dragon in disguise?" Despite yourself, you blush. She makes one final leap, landing gracefully at the mouth of a cave. She moves to set you down, but a sharp whimper as your paw touches stone causes her to sweep you back up again.

"My foot... I cut it on something... your egg! Oh no, did it break!? Did they get it!? IS THE BABY OKAY!?" The panic lends a shrill edge to your voice, and Sylea tries to shush you, but for naught. From deeper inside the cave, you hear a whimper and a cry that rocks the very stones themselves. She sighs and, cradling you in one arm, carries you forward.

"You need not worry for my egg, pup, for it is egg no longer. Come, let me show you my Djanna."

"Djanna? What's a Djanna?"

"Flesh of my flesh, bone of my bone." The pride in Sylea's voice is obvious, and her own tail swishes back and forth as she carries you into a small-ish cavern, lined wall to wall with gilt and ornate furniture, expensive carpets, and treasure galore. In the center of the room, in an obsidian basinet, lies a tiny figure with orange-tinged skin, a tiny nubbin of a tail, and a pair of blunt horns curving slightly upward. Scales cover its shoulders, arms, and neck, and its eyes are the color of flame.

"This, little pup, is my Djanna. My daughter. Your cousin, if I am your aunt." She pulls up a chair with her free hand and settles you upon it, slipping from the cavern without another word. You lean over, wide-eyed, as you observe the tiny creature. It looks at you curiously, its cries silenced by your presence. You lean closer, curiosity and studiousness fixating you upon it. You don't notice her reaching up slowly, don't notice it gripping your ear until it has a handful of your fluff and is tugging at it and giggling.

No, because it's in a flour wrap, not bread slices.
>>
>>40106211
No, I'd call it disgusting. I'd also call it a wrap.
>>
>>40106211
I consider "sandwich" to require two discreet items sandwiching the contents. A quesadilla is one single tortilla, therefore it's a form of wrap.

>>40106215
>>40106217
Y'all are idjits.
>>
>>40106218
I'm with this guy.

From the dictionary:
sand·wich
ˈsanˌ(d)wiCH/
noun
1.
an item of food consisting of two pieces of bread with meat, cheese, or other filling between them, eaten as a light meal.
"a ham sandwich"
>>
>>40106233
A hot dog isn't a sandwich. Neither would that.
>>
>>40106233
>So one slice of bread folded over wouldn't be a sandwich?
Yep. Unless the bread tears while folding it.
>>
A sandwich is assorted toppings assembled typically inside two slices of bread. A wrap... sorta qualifies? I mean you can have open faced sandwiches? Where there is only one slice of bread.
>>
>>40106233
Correct. One slice of bread folded over would be a sandwich.
Because bread doesn't fold.
And it would break into two pieces.
Therefore constituting the basic definition of a sandwich.

Also, tortillas are not bread. They are tortillas.
>>
>>40106258
what about naan bread? It's practically a tortilla.
>>
>>40106258
My break can fold, anon. It's not toast.
>>
>>40106258
>tortillas are not bread
>>
Look, let's just agree the food captchas are fucking retarded, yeah?

I mean, it just asked me to select pizzas, I selected two pizzas and what was clearly a burger and it accepted it.
>>
>>40106248
Well, now you're opening the field far to much. Bruschetta, for example, isn't a sandwich. It's an appetizer.
>>
>>40106173
Despite yourself, you can't help but giggle in response to the child's fixation on your fluff. You scoop her up carefully without thinking about it, gathering her close to you as her other hand goes straight for the fluff on your shoulder. It hurts, but you don't quite care. This little thing's cackling giggles are infectious and you can't help but respond in kind. You nuzzle it nose to nose, cheek to cheek, forehead to forehead, liberally marking it as you laugh and coo and yip softly at it. Minutes pass before you become acutely aware that you're being watched and you slowly turn to see Sylea standing in the mouth of the cave, almost doubled over in barely suppressed laughter. You blush and carefully set the child back in her basinet, pulling her hands carefully from your fur. This causes an instant change in her demeanor, crocodile tears welling up into her eyes and loud whimpers giving way to plaintive wails and the clenching of fists at the indignity of being denied her new playmate. Sylea sweeps across the room, scooping the child up and cuddling her close.

"There there, love. Yes, I know she's an absolute delight, but you mustn't tug on fur like that. She is strong, but not so resilient as we, hmm?" she gives the child a soft kiss between her horns, and slowly Djanna begins to calm down. Sylean holds her close for a minute or two longer before she begins to yawn, and the older dragon carefully places her back into her bed. You feel almost ashamed that Sylea chastised her, whispering that it didn't hurt you that much. The dragon just clicks her tongue and moves to sit cross-legged at your feet, taking your injured paw in her lap.

tor·til·la
tôrˈtē(y)ə/
noun
(in Mexican cooking) a thin, flat pancake of cornmeal or flour, eaten hot or cold, typically with a savory filling.
>>
Just today I ate what I thought was a sandwich on a piece of french bread. It was not cut all the through to the point of separation into two distinct pieces of bread, it was one folding piece of bread with a hinge.

"Tsk... it cut you deep. I'm sorry, pup. I did not think I had left any shards behind." She lets your foot rest against her knee as she reaches to the back of her leg, grimacing as she gives a quick yank and pulls a scale free. She presses it to your foot, inner side to the skin, and presses down for several long moments. It aches, but soon enough she pulls her hand back and the scale remains adhered to the skin. You give an experimental flex of your foot, and the scale shifts with it. "If you do not move it, the scale will keep it from becoming infected. You will stay here tonight, and tomorrow I will take you home again."

Your heart skips a beat. "I can't! My mom's gonna kill me! She'll yank out my tail and put me in the corner forever and-"

Sylea lays a finger against your lips. "I will speak in your defense. It was love, and worry, that brought you here. Surely your mother will accept that. Even more so since it is becoming clear that short of burying you up to your neck, you will not be kept in a single place." You whimper, but you know better than to try and argue. You hear a hiccup, and the cavern is momentarily lit by a small shower of sparks from Djanna's mouth. Sylea smiles down at her child. "Besides, I should think it good that you two become well acquainted."

They're pretty gross. Usually taste like someone took straight jelly and then mixed it with frostburn and a thimble of peanuts.

I've only ever eaten them out of desperation on band trips and even then it was only when I was unable to find/steal other food easily. Fuck bus rides that last for 20+ hours after a day of marching.

>>
>>40106356
Thanks for the thread.

At first I thought that the first skip, from after birth to a week after, was a missed opportunity, and kinda excessive. But now, after seeing more of Kobold society, I think it was the right call after all. This is definitely a different family and social dynamic than the other RE: stories we've seen, and the current pacing is working well with it.

The portrayal of memory retention seems kinda inconsistent, remembering workout routines and rubber cement but not seasons. I know you had a different idea about that sort of thing when you started up the quest, and early quest hiccups are certainly to be expected, but I hope the memory thing doesn't stay as rocky. To me, forgetting the past life (all or most) seems like it kinda invalidates a lot of the value of the "RE:" premise.

Nitpicking aside, I'm certainly more interested than I thought I'd be in this quest. Looking forward to the next thread!
