This is a quest based on the Phatnasy Star series of video games. You are Pheonixia, a newman force and member of the Hunter's Guild.

* Every 20 minutes, a post will be made with a series of choices to be made. Players may vote on any single or logical combination of choices. The most popular choices voted on within the first 15 minutes will be used.

* Write in votes with sufficient support may also be used.

* After the vote has been decided. The QM will roll relevant dice to determine success rate for the next progress post.

* You can follow Twitter account @sbf2009 for updates between quest sessions. https://twitter.com/sbf2009

* Previous sessions can be viewed on suptg. http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=PSOQ

The difficulty of an action will be stated as part of the choice for the vote, but not the numerical value needed to succeed. You can estimate the roll needed using the chart below.

Dice Roll Difficulty:

> Trivial (1-2): Most Hunter's Guild Members would have little trouble accomplishing this.

> Easy (3-4): Not necessarily difficult, but it would be best to let a specialist take over if available.

> Moderate (5-6): A strenuous task. If your class does not specialize in this kind of task, you may wish to find an easier alternative.

> Hard (7-9): Only an experienced guild member should risk this.

> Heroic (10-15): Not possible by even experienced guild members. Even legendary hunters like Rico Tyrell would hesitate to try such a task.

> Impossible (16+): As it sounds. Such actions defy perceptions of reality.

Current stats: 5 STR/7 DEX/10 MIND

Last Time:

“Sir, I’ve only had time to read the summary. But I did manage to get my hands on this.” You place the capsule on his desk and activate it.

“Rico...” His face softens. It seems like he is close to tears. You both stand in silence as Rico repeats her message. When the capsule deactivates, Tyrell finally responds.

“Sir, we have every reason to believe Rico is still alive somewhere around the Central Dome area.” You stand at attention, waiting for him to say anything.

Tyrell finally composes himself. “It would do you well to read the dossier before your next mission. You are to continue to take any Hunter’s Guild mission that will lead you to the Central Dome. Finding Rico is your top priority, before any guild business.” He clears his throat. “Don’t disclose this mission to anyone.”

“Understood, sir.”

“Pheonixia, I cannot stress this enough. I am placing an incredible amount of trust in you, do not disappoint me. It may surprise you to hear this, but I am not the only person in power on this ship. Rumors of misallocated resources could be disastrous. But...” he looks you dead in the eye, “this is my only daughter.”

You nod your head. “I know sir. I’ll find her. I promise.”

“Thank you Pheonixia.” Tyrell sits back down. “You are dismissed.”

Irene walks you to the elevator. “I overheard your conversation, sorry.”

You shoot her a glance. “So much for privacy...”

“Privacy is in short supply around here. Just a word of warning, Colin wasn’t exaggerating.” She gives you a serious look. “If you’re going to be helping him like this, be careful of what you say around certain people. Especially soldiers, or that cast you seem attached to.” Irene heads back to her desk.

There's big things happening around you that you didn't exactly sign up for, but you were never one to turn down a challenge.

Tyrell wants you to keep taking missions to Ragol, so you'll do exactly that. You take the elevator down to the central area of Pioneer 2 and head straight for the guild counter. The notice board is well populated with planet-side quests. It seems many of the other hunters have been turned off of missions on Ragol. A few catch your eye.

With no strong preference to guide you, you err on the side of nepotism. You send a guild mail to the client to set up a meeting time. To your surprise, you get a response within five minutes. They're ready to meet immediately in the guild lobby.

You walk over to the lobby and spot a few forces reading the news, and a short newman in a lab coat. As soon as she sees you, she let's out an ear piercing scream. Your fellow forces are visibly disturbed, but remain silent. You have little time to react as the girl in the lab coat nearly tackles you with a running hug.

“Oh. My. GOD! Pheonixia, is that really you? I thought they were kidding when they said you got your hunter's license. Oh my God, this is so cool. You look sooooooo sexy in that gettup. Is that, like, regulation or something? Or is that just the fashion. I know I'd totally be rocking that kind of thing if the Lab let us. Of course, I've got a bit more to show off, so I guess modesty can be a good thing, right? I haven't heard from you in, like, a year! How have you been? Any cuties I should know about?”

You have no memory of this person.

“I'm sorry. A lot of stuff's been happening lately and faces have been running together. What's your name?”

The newman pouts, “Oh, Pheonixia, you've always been so busy with work you never let your social life happen. No wonder you have trouble remembering names. It's Nela, remember? We worked on that one project together that one time? Something about laser swords or whatever?”

Now you remember her. You only worked with Nela for a couple weeks. She was a largely unqualified assistant that tended to attach herself to the most powerful men around her. You suspect she was only put on your project because your principal investigator was recently divorced and she had been...keeping him company. She was moved to a different project after a nearly disastrous incident with a plasma saber's photon pack. The fact that she can remember you after all these years is, at least, somewhat impressive.

“Oh, Nela...right. Hi, sorry I couldn't remember you right away. So, you're still working at the lab?”

Nela perks back up. “Yeah! I write down measurements for Dr. Guls and bring him coffee and stuff. You know, the assistant thing.”

Dr. Guls is xenobiologist. You suspect she's been put on rudimentary bench chemistry detail with no volatile chemicals. That's usually where happens to interns before they prove themselves capable.

“Anyways, Dr. Guls just got that animal data the government just sent out. He saw some pictures of those giant birds, which were totally adorable by the way, and took off somewhere. He hasn't been at the lab or at home for a day now.”

“Alright,” you turn to leave, “I'll get him right back, don't worry.”

“Pheonixia! Please make sure he's not hurt, ok?”

This is getting a bit too personal for you. “He'll be fine, I promise.”

Before you begin work, you may want to grab some help.

You decide to call in Eleanor for backup. She agrees to join you and meets with a wave at the Ryuker gate.

“Thanks for coming in on such short notice. How did you get to the pipe so fast?”

“Oh, I'm already on another mission. I was about to head out, but it's not time sensitive. After our last mission, it seems like a good idea to stick together.” She gestures to the conduit. “After you.”

You pipe down to the surface. It's still early in the morning, so you should both have plenty of time to complete your objectives, barring any unforeseen circumstances.

You set your MAG to track Dr. Guls' shuttle transponder.

“So, what mission are you on?”

“Well, you know mission details are confidential.” Eleanor laughs, “But I suppose since we're technically both working on it, I can share. I'm helping someone recover MAGs that somehow got lost on the surface.”

“How do you lose a MAG? Aren't they supposed to be hard-linked to their owners?”

She gives out a soft sigh, “Yes, which is why the mission is so curious. I'm good with MAGs, so I decided to take the mission to find out what's going on.”

Your MAG starts to oscillate up and down toward a denser part of the forest. After walking through brush for 20 minutes, you see a shuttle to the east in a clearing. The grass around it has been flattened into a path. You see Rappy tracks head off to the north.

You take a look inside the shuttle. Eleanor stays outside the hatch. “I'll keep an eye out for wildlife and tell you if anything happens.”

“Good thinking.”

The interior is a mess. Notes are scattered all over the seats, and it seems he had copies of the footage you took with the Rappies during the Ryuker conduit mission. You notice a journal on the dashboard.

'Day 1 – They don't seem to suspect a thing. That, or they don't care. The birds are even more glorious than they appeared in the footage. I have met burn-wing and his friends. They seem more receptive to me than the others. They nearly followed me to the shuttle, but I cannot let them discover it. I must remain undiscovered.'

Vague and more than a little strange. Heading back our to the rear hatch, you notice a lab coat, dress shirt, and pants hung and neatly folded. There appears to be feathers on the floor.

“Eleanor...what's going on here?”

The MAGs seem to be oscillating in sync with each other, and letting off a faint glow that you'd normally expect as the primary stage of a photon blast. Two more MAGs come out of the woods and join the crowd. They appear to be forming a ring around Eleanor.

“Wait, wait, wait. Can we go back to the part where you can talk to the MAGs?”

“Oh, you can't? It must be a cast thing.” She reaches down to pet one of the MAGs.

“No, this is definitely a you thing. MAGs are meant to take orders, not actually communicate back.”

“But they can think and feel, just like casts. They might not use words, but they give me images to interpret. They are all trying to get me to find their masters. I think they were all locked in a box somewhere for some time.”

You give your MAG a nervous, guilty glance, suddenly realizing that you've been treating it like a simple tool when it might have been much more. “Well, what are they doing right now?”

“Oh this? They're just happy they have someone to talk to besides other MAGs. MAGs get lonely without someone around to use them.” She stands back up and walks over to you. “Weren't you asking about something earlier?”

“Uhm...yeah. Can you take a look at this feather and see if you can figure out where it came from?”

Eleanor takes the feather and holds it up to the sun. You see her eyes dilate. “This was made by a biological 3D printer. It's not a real bird feather. The coloration is from a dye. Whoever made this did a pretty good job of it.”

“I feared as much. I don't suppose any of the MAGs have seen a place where you can find a lot of Rag Rappies?”

The MAGs light up and temporarily speed up their oscillations. Some of them ring around you. More have joined the crowd while you weren't looking.

You both walk through the forest accompanied by two dozen MAGs. You walk into a clearing filled with rag rappies waddling about, which would be impressive on its own were it not for the massive ship crashed into the cliff face behind them.

Elenor turns to you. “What?”

“The man we're looking for. He made a rappy costume. He's hiding in that ship.

“Isn't that...the Gran Squall?”

You look at the shape of the hull. It does look like the tail end of the ship from the news reports.

“Yeah. Something tells me the doctor isn't going to like what he finds.”

You both climb into the ship. Droppings, scratches, and peck marks cover the are. Apparently, these birds can pierce metal with their beaks.

You find a kitchen area. All the food stores have been torn open. Some of them are starting to rot. You fail to find Dr. Guls on the lower deck, so you climb up to the next one. Behind the first door out of the stairwell, you find a room with two bodies. One of the MAGs flies over to them.

Your MAG blinks blue briefly and floats over to the other MAG. They both glow with photon energy for a moment. Your MAG returns to your side as the other MAG floats over to Elenor.

Elenor looks at you. “You know, you shouldn't feel guilty.”

“What?”

“Earlier. Your MAG told me you felt guilty about how you've been treating it. It's very happy with you. Most hunters don't even know that a MAG can think. You and your MAG have a strong...synchronization?...with each other. It's hard to find the right words for what it is, but what you two have is special.”

He turns to you with tears in his eyes. “It was fun. These birds are amazing. But this planet. There's something wrong with this planet. Everything is so violent. There's so much death around here.” He looks down at himself. “I must look pretty silly right now.”

You don't respond.

“All right, let's go home.”

You turn to find Elenor standing in front of a metal crate perforated by peck marks.

“What'd you find over there?” you ask her.

She turns back to you. “Sorry, I got distracted. This was the crate the mags were kept in, but this isn't from the ship. I think I'll have to have a few words with my client upon our return.”

The three of you and nearly forty MAGs walk back to the shuttle. You hear a few rappies scuttling about as you make your way through the forest, but none of them come close enough to see. You assume Elenor scared them off well enough.

You allow Dr. Guls to change into a more dignified outfit before you enter the shuttle. The shuttle takes off, experiencing some turbulence as you ascend. You think the dark matter may be to blame.

As soon as you exit the atmosphere, you send a guild mail to Nela, informing her of your safe return.

The shuttle docks in the bay, and the hatch opens, and in runs Nela in full force attire. She tackles Dr. Guls in a similar way she did you. Tears stream down her face as she berates her boss.

“Oh my God, Dale! Are you alright? Never ever do that to me again. I was so worried. What did you think you were doing? Those stupid birds aren't worth running out on me, are they?” She punctuates every sentence with a kiss somewhere on his face.

“Nela, wait! I can explain everything later. I have to get these notes back to the Lab.”

“No, sir. We are going back home right now!” She comes over to you and grips you in a bear hug. Your faces are touching. Why are your faces touching?

“Pheonixia, thank you so much. Here.” She hands you a photon crystal, “I know you liked working with these before, so I kind of swiped one from the Lab when no one was looking. I figured you deserved an extra reward for bringing Dr. Guls back so fast.”

She grabs Dr. Guls by the wrist and practically drags him out of the shuttle. “I told the guild you finished your job! Thanks so much. I'll see you later, ok? We can go shopping for hunter stuff! Like swords or whatever!”

“No...problem...” You wave back as the two leave. You wipe off any fluids that too-personal thank you might have left on your face. You turn to Elenor.

“Pheonixia, I am just as confused as you. But good job on your mission!”

As always, updates on Twitter @sbf2009, suptg for old archived stuff under PSOQ, questions here until I go off to do other stuff.

Are we following PSO1 wholesale, or will there be some deviation to the forumla/story?

I'm putting all Phantasy Star Lore in a blender, mashing puree, and pouring over the beginning of PSO episode I. Once you guys find your way into the Central Dome, there will be massive deviation opportunities.

Towards that end, how much do the old Phantasy Star games influence PSO?
>>
>>40168326

Less than they will in the quest. Only some items and enemies carried over. The Stories of Motavia, Dozolis, and Palma are completely separated from the stories of Ragol and Coral in the games.

I'm on every Sunday at 7 PM. Until we get more players, I'm afraid of having it on any other day. You can always read up on the old quests to get ready for next week!
