Previously on Sith Academy Quest...

-------------------------------------------------------------

You are Jakdal Zul, a former Dathomirian Nightbrother. You spent your whole life in servitude to the witches that rule your world, but now that it is discovered you were strong in the Force, the Matron sent you to train with the New Sith, in hopes of gaining a powerful ally within that order. However, you are beginning to have thoughts of your own...

Before you can become a Sith, however, you must prove yourself in a series of deadly trials. Having befriended the wry and cynical Telza, a chiss from Nar Shadda, and the naive human Fynn, you descend together into a recently discovered part of the tomb of ancient dark lord Marka Ragnos to search for relics in hope of drawing a Sith's eye to take you as an apprentice. You will prove yourself to the Sith, or die trying...

The halls of the cavern are damp, with pool of water forming. After deciding to take the Western corridor, a hidden trap leaves you halfway through the long hallway, with the ceiling descending slowly on the trio of Sith hopefuls.

You raise your hands and call on the power of the Dark Side to slow the inexorable descent of the ceiling towards you. Let's get some rolls going with a DC of 40+ to slow it and 60+ to stop it outright. 1d100s as usual.

Hands lifted upwards, you focus your emotions like the Overseer had told you, like you remember from the dismissive, sporadic, and cryptic advice of your Matron. You hear the grinding of stone on stone, and feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders - but the ceiling is losing speed.

Telza is sprinting forward down the hallway, intent on reaching the opening. Fynn follows close behind her, but turns around, pausing some yards before it.

"Telza - help him!"

"I'm not dying for you!"

"Just do it!"

Telza skids to a stop - the ceiling is still going down, if slower. Fynn already is concentrating, hands held high - you can feel a slight lifting of your burden.

"Because you're useful." she says, raising one hand. You feel the weight come off of you, and sprint as fast as your feet can carry you towards the exit - leaning forward. Fynn and Telza are stepping backwards, lifting it from inside the exit.

"I - I can't - agh!" Fynn gasps. He falls to his knees, gasping for air. Telza's face is slicked with sweat, and she herself has dropped to one knee. Stumbling on a loose stone, you fall out of the corridor into the central chamber, sending your allies sprawling along with you. All of you are taxed from the endeavor - your connection to the Dark Side doesn't yet allow such things to come easily to you.

"Way to go, Fynn." Telza says between long, deep breaths. "Really helped a lot."

"Another second and you'd be on the ground too!"

"I already am thanks to Mr. Coordination over here."

There are the sound of footsteps on stone - and looming over you is the Twi'lek from your bunker, a slimy thing with green skin and a foul sneer. Another Twi'lek stands near him.

"Well, well brother - what do we have here?" He says in heavily accented Basic.

"Just some novices." You say, rising to your feet unsteadily. The Dark Side is still in you, though, and the rush of mortal panic only makes it stronger.

"You're competition." The Twi'lek says, grinning. "I'm a nice guy, though. Aren't I, brother."

"Uh... yes?" The blue Twi'lek is confused by this question.

"How about this - the first of you to hand over your artifacts lives to serve us another day." The slimy alien grins, wide and toothy - the kind that's great for making other people hate you. You remember the text of paths of the Sith. All minds are part of the Force - and the walls between them are thin indeed. You raise your hand to break the walls.

"You will give us any artifacts you may have. Then, you will leave us."

The blue one's jaw immediately slackens. It was already fairly slack, but now it's very slack.

"He didn't let me carry any of it... I, uh... I have to go." The thug begins walking away at a brisk pace. The green one seems to be struggling, like he's working on a difficult math problem in his head. He's holding some sort of relic out towards you, a piece of black stone cut cleanly in a bizarre, angular shape - like a puzzle piece.

"Take it... but I should go... but I need this to open the gate, he said so. Why do I have to go? I..."

"You're in danger here, this place is dangerous. Your brother needs your help." The initiate's eyes snap open, like waking suddenly from sleep.

"Of course he does. Damn fool couldn't tie his laces without me." He absentmindedly hands you the mystery artifact, then walks off, muttering something that is most likely curse words in his native tongue. You began to examine the thing, but feel a chill in your lungs. The floor seems to be wobbling - another trap?

"I've got you." Fynn says, helping you steady yourself. "We should rest here." You feel like your veins are running with burning ice - it's a dull, creeping pain.

"What's happening?"

"We aren't used to the Dark Side. I read about this, it can be... rough on you, if you haven't built up a tolerance to it. You shouldn't overtax your Force powers."

"So is he useless now?" Telza asks.

"No - he just needs some time to rest. We all do."

then

> [ ] "What's your game, Fynn?"
>>
>>40262269
We need a break, but staying in one place is dangerous too.
Let's proceed at a slow pace.
>>
>>40262269

Put the artifact away for now and meditate in a corner. Keep an eye on both of them while we rest for a few minutes.

Focus on our mental strength and examine the sensation in our body, could it be poison or Fynn's influence?
>>
>>40262329

We shouldn't let him know that we're suspicious, especially if he thinks we are weakened by Force usage. It's possible that Fynn is using the Force to drain our powers as well, we should take a minute to examine the weakness within us and rest

Let's be vigilant and make sure that he can't catch us unaware.
>>
>>40262269
> [ ] "Yeah - sounds like a plan."
>>
>>40262345
This.

Cautiously onwards!
>>
>>40262512

I am concerned that if we don't take a moment to rebalance, our "allies" will simply rob us as soon as we are too weak to defend ourselves.

If we take a second to rest we'll be in much better position to continue. We already have an artifact so now we just have to leave.
>>
>>40262329
>>40262360
>>40262399

"Yeah - I could use a break. You guys can rest over here if you want. We can't do this for long, though. The stooges might figure out what I did to them sooner than we think." Fynn nods.

"Sure - let's rest." Telza says. It seems to be the first thing you suggested that she's relieved about. You sit in a corner, kneeling like you've seen more experienced Sith at the academy do.

>>40262399
>>40262360

Closing your eyes, you turn inward. You can't sense any particular sort of outside influence - rather, it feels like a fire's been lit inside you, burned and went out, like you're left with ashes and a hollow sort of pulling hunger inside you. It seems to fade with time, though, but a strangeness persists - an emptiness you haven't felt before. You hear a familiar scream.

"Ah! Please - ah!" It sounds like the blue Twi'lek. Telza smirks. Fynn appears to be gazing at a wall, lost in thought. A half-hour passes quickly, spent in different sorts of meditation on mantras you were told to memorize.

"Are you ready to go?" Fynn asks. Strange existential inner hunger aside, you've recovered. The way you came in is blocked by the fallen ceiling.

> [ ] "Let's follow the screams."
> [ ] "Let's go away from whatever they fell into."
> [ ] "Lead the way."

>>

I'll back this if we make the Chiss girl go first. If they bitch at us we can say that we already saved their lives with the ceiling thing and managed to steal the artifact as well.

Also we should definitely examine the artifact carefully before we turn it over to the professor who wanted it.

"No. You're going first." You say.

"We've been over this before, I -"

"Made me save your life, let Fynn pass out bearing the brunt of the weight, moan about everything, and are clearly the least trustworthy person here?"

"Fine. Though this means I get the artifacts first."

"I wouldn't have it any other way." The Chiss loses her characteristic smirk, and glowers, marching forward. You follow her down the forking road towards the fading echoes of the two aliens' wailing. You see them writhing in agony, caught in the grips of what appears to be a well-lit, unremarkable corridor.

"Please... help us - he's burning us! He's burning us!"

Without power or influence we can' control that many, if any people.

And even then, the stronger you are, the greater your threats become, most often this includes your apprentices and minions, so it's best to only have a few to manage.

Holding one chain tightly is more secure than trying to hold many chains at once.

You close your eyes and open your mind - the Dark Side thrums through this temple. If there ever was a place to train Sith, it was Moraband - the power of the shadows the ancient lords cast here still sleeps, and your connection to the Force grows when you drink them in.

You see the two brothers - their wailing giving away to a lifelessness. This is not the same thing that burnt you out, but rather a deliberate and awful death: Something, rather someone is ripping into their spirits and feeding off of their connection to the Force, drawing their living enemies into itself.

"Do you feel it?" Fynn asks you.

"Yes. They're being devoured."

"That too, but I'm talking about something else. It almost is too ridiculous to suggest but this presence is almost -"

"Familiar?" The voice that replies is like the wind blowing through a sandy canyon. "These fools had weak vessels unsuited for the Force. The Dark Side was inevitably going to consume them. I was merely hastening the process."

"You!" The Chiss said. "You're from the maze of trials!"

"Yes, once. I am stretching that identity though. I am now like you, in a way." The shadows gather as the brothers go limp, their flesh quickly desiccating into dust. The familiar shape of the hooded figure forms. "You may pass. All of you have strength they didn't. The central chamber is not far."

You hold out the flat, misshapen piece of black stone in your hand.

"I have the artifact - tell me what it is." The old spirit grins.

"It is a secret of the Sith who made this tomb, one of many. One I was privy to, though - one I can share. It is a key to a reliquary. A reliquary that these fools might have reached." He gestures to the two piles of ash. "The door will open when that is properly used."

"I've earned the right to your name, Dark One. What is it?" The hooded figure sweeps back his hood. His eyes glow like burning, yellow coals and his face is a spiderweb of battle scars. Tattooed on his forehead is a symbol, like a black diamond with curling, angular branches.

"That is the answer I am allowed to provide. Now, I will wait for you in the reliquary - you have one trial left before I know I can trust what lies within to you."

"Wait!" Fynn says. His eyes have a determined curiosity in them. "You said you were becoming more like us. What does that mean?"

"I am not bound to answer that." The spirit says, before vanishing.

"I don't want to end up as ashes. Let's go forward." you say. For once, all Telza can do is nod numbly in agreement. Fynn offers and absentminded "Yeah", but seems to be thinking about something.

The gateway you come upon is only a fifteen minute hike from the hallway. It's an imposing thing, wrought of black stone. The key isn't some strange puzzle, as one might expect, but rather slots into the door, swinging open to reveal the true chamber. The stone takes on almost a greenish tinge, and the patterns on the walls suggest writhing tentacles. Purple crystals cast an eerie light, and the dripping water pools on the ground. A raised, circular dais is dry, and at its center there is a pillar. Floating above the pillar, suspended a few inches in the air is the unmistakable hilt of a lightsaber, made of some kind of strange wood.

"Reliquary. No, I've seen pictures of some uncovered reliquaries. This isn't one." Fynn says.

"What is it?" Telza asks.

"A ritual chamber." The doors swing shut with a loud clatter. Fynn's face is a thin-lipped mask of fear. "One of you needs to take the saber. It's how the ritual starts. Or we'll never leave."

It is obvious, but the trap isn't in taking the lightsaber.
>>
>>40264773
It's a test. Given how retarded Sith are when it comes to ambition, simultaneously rewarding and punishing it, it could go badly, but still, there is no good that can come out of anyone else than us tripping it.

I doubt we get to keep the lightsaber. Besides I thought we decided that sabering wasn't going to be our forte.

"This is what I came here for. I'll start this ritual." You extend your hand, but the Force doesn't call the lightsaber to your hand. You step onto the dais, and all the crystals flicker to life, one by one in a circle around you. You reach out and grip the lightsaber's handle. Behind you, the phantasm looms with a triumphant expression.

"It is begun!" he says. His voice deepens, changes its tenor - it acquires a harsh reverberation that it had not had before. "Adorn yourself with the ceremonial armor, my apprentice."

"Yes." you say, your voice also changed, without thought. "As you say, Master Ragnos." You turn, and the chamber is clear and dry, the light not purple and flickering but rather a clear, yellow radiance. The separate pillar has risen from the ground and the ceremonial armor of an old Sith Marauder floats lazily above it.

"I'll play your game, Ghost." you say, your voice briefly your own. Marka Ragnos flickers.

"Play then. But I play to win." he says. Two robed acolytes attend the ritual, faceless and nameless. They chant, a low and constant drone in the Balc Tongue.

The golden armor fits on to your body quite nicely - as though it were made for you. You remember that it was, in fact. Your memories are returning, you're remembering who you are... or who he was?

You grapple with the memories of Hazgor, foremost of the disciples of Ragnos - you were honored with being the Spirit Guard of the Dark Lord's tomb - sent to death before him, to guard his ghost in the afterlife.

You remember these New Sith, these aliens and heretics building themselves on their incomplete knowledge of a destroyed past - you remember their Dark Lord, subverting you with a ritual and setting you as guardian of trials, stripping you of even your name with their indomitable will.

And you remember sensing opportunity in these three. You strained against the earth to break open your reliquary, to claim a body and pose amongst these acolytes. You will rise amongst these New Sith, you will sculpt them in the image of the followers of Lord Ragnos from within.

No! You are not Hazgor. You are Jakdal. Are you?

"In death, you will travel to the spirit realm." the Acolyte says. "The ritual will bind you to these tombs."

"I am ready." Hazgor says.

The knife plunges into your throat, out of the past, into the future, the now, the ruins. Who are you?

"In the end... I am not Sith." And after untold millennia, Hazgor is dead and gone. You turn back to see Telza, bruised, gripping her vibrosword with shaking hands.

"No - you won't win! I won't die here!"

"Wait, Telza!" says Fynn, who was slumped against a wall, bruised. "Can't you feel it? It's gone! The spirit is gone! This shouldn't be possible!"

"I think we're overlooking the obvious problem. You've got the lightsaber. What are we gonna bring back to the Sith Masters?" Fynn smiles a knowing grin.

"You can take that old armor, Telza."

"And you're content to just come back empty-handed?"

"No - I've got something I can get." he says, holding up a small, cubic device. "I loaned this out from the library - a holocamera. I can record the histories that are written on the walls here."

"Good. Let's go back to the Academy."

Fynn collects his photographs, and Telza her armor. The journey back is short - residual memories of Hazgor reveal a set of hidden stairs that lead to the surface. A good thing, too: With Hazgor's spirit no longer present, the chamber is beginning to flood with water. All that's left to do is the long trek through the desert.

"I can feel it, Jakdal." Fynn says as you walk through the sand. "We all got stronger today, but what happened to you - it made you more powerful in the Dark Side."

Your Sith Master, the Kel Dor, just happened to be wandering the central halls as you come back to the shady coolness of the Academy. It's a welcome change.

"Back from the tombs. It's been quite a while, a few days. I almost thought you were dead." The wrinkled thing regards you. "Have you come back with something to show Darth Greia?"

"Yes - we all do." The Kel Dor's brow furrows at this. "Remember, the way of the Sith is self-reliance."

"Yeah." Telza says. "You see these bruises? No one's riding anyone's coat tails."

"Darth Greia will decide. They had told me that they had sensed a movement in the Force. And to send the next round of acolytes for an audience. His office is on the third floor."

You and your companions offer deferential gestures of agreement and head upstairs. Greia's office appears to be a more recent addition to the Academy, with many smooth, metallic features.

"Acolytes, come in." says a voice through a strange, metallic filter. "All together, please."

You find yourself looking at a strange, armored figure - Greia's dark outfit is more reminiscent of a beetle's carapace then anything else, and the mask is smooth and black. It's difficult to discern species or gender. He examines the artifacts you brought him, one at a time.

"Fascinating - each reveals much about you. I sensed your tribulations in the tomb - I felt your fear and hatred. And I felt it turn to strength in the crucible of mortal peril. All of you have a potential future with me." The Dark Lord turns to you. "Tell me, Dathomirian. What are you called? And why should I take you as an apprentice?"

The others look on, silent.

A pattern of colored lights flickers on the surface of their mask. "I can feel that indomitable will of yours. I can sense your strength." He turns to Telza. "Why would you be my apprentice?"

"I brought you Hazgor's armor - I fought Hazgor, in the real world and not some vision quest. One of the ancient Sith Assassins. And I'm alive. My lord."

The lights behind Greia's mask fluctuate, a darker red now. "You were given the armor. I can hear it in your voice. You don't understand the Sith, Chiss. I would have chosen you because of the hatred in your heart. Maybe, if you understand where your power truly lies, I will accept you." The Dark Lord then rests his eyes on the last one, Fynn - his eyes still bright, but weary from his trials. "And then we have you. I don't even know how to react to this - or how she would want me to react. Stay behind. I need to ask you some questions." It motions to you. "Both of you - go. You walk out, but later - stealthily as you can, a few minutes later, you slip back, near enough to make out what they're saying behind the door.

"Tell me - No, give me your best guess. Is your mother trying to kill you?"

"If she was, Dark Lord, I'd be dead. I think... I think she's trying to see if I was worth having. That's why I'm being put through the trials, same as any other neophyte."

"If your naivety is an act, it's one so good that I can't see through it. And that's not a possibility. I find it hard to believe that your mother would raise an idiot."

"She's trying to make me strong. That's why she's trying to get me to hate her."

"Is it working?"

"...yes. I hate her, hate her, hate her!" he says, his voice rising to a shout. His fist comes down audibly on the table. "And she hates me."

"Not so loud, Fynn. You'll startle our would-be spy."

"Spy?"

The door swings open, and Greia stands over you at eight feet tall.

"Jakdal, if you have any questions for Fynn, ask them. I'm eager to see this sort of interaction, it helps me find out if either of you are suited to me."

"Who's your mother, Fynn? What the hell have you been hiding from me."

Fynn turns to you, horrified. "Jakdal? Damn it, Jak!" He walks over to you, quick steps, to the point where he's face to face with you, almost too close for comfort. He looks at you, his eyes pleading. "Please, Jak. Forget you saw this. I need a friend, a - someone who trusts me. Just forget you saw this."

"Are you kidding me? I trust you MORE now! You wouldn't believe how paranoid your regular act got me!" you say. Fynn seems a bit surprised at this, but he relaxes, a little bit. Darth Greia lets out a hearty, metallic laugh.

"Your heart's in the right place then, kid." the Dark Lord says.

"It wasn't an act. Everyone on the Dark Side has hate in them, I just don't let it rule me. And my mother - she's Darth Lucent, one of the twelve Darths that serve the true Dark Lord of the Sith. Do you have any other questions?"

"Can you tell me why you hate your mother?" At this, Fynn lets out a long, low sigh.

"It's easier to show you." he says. He grabs his acolyte uniform and pulls it off in a single motion. He's lean, but not scrawny - and his skin is covered in a mess of electricity burn scars. "She raised me to be Sith. And I'm going to be Sith." He lets out a wry chuckle. "I guess now you know why I was always so modest about changing my shirt."

"Thanks." You say. "Thanks for trusting me enough to tell me this." He smiles.

"I can't trust anyone. But thank you. It's nice to pretend long enough to forget that."

"Okay, acolytes, enough bonding." Greia says. "I have artifacts to analyze, and I believe you need to rest up. We're going to be starting intensive training soon enough - the weak are going to be separated from the strong. And you'll need your sleep."

Fynn turns towards it. "Thank you, Dark Lord." Then he turns towards you and starts putting his shirt back on. "I think we have some barracks to head to?"

You diverge paths, and head to the library. It's almost empty, save for a single robed apprentice of one of the more prominent Sith Masters. He turns to you, then looks back at the holopad, disinterested.

"Force Lightning is a Sith weapon, a tool used since ancient times. Anyone with enough strength in the Dark Side and knowledge of the Sith teachings can produce a facsimile, but to inflict true agony one must first understand it...

...a Sith Sorcerer uses ritual to connect to the power of the Dark Side. These old spells, secrets of the holocrons of the old Lords and the sorcerers of today, connect you to the might of the past, easing the burden such connection to the Dark Side might place on you...

...the Force Storm is the pinnacle of a Sith Sorcerer's art. Although the name conjures up the image of raging lightning annihilating hordes of Jedi, this is but one form - a Force Storm is merely the Sith's will expressed over a wide swathe of land. Storms of fear and illusion are possible, as are telekinetic whirlwinds that level structures..."

"A Sith is never unarmed, for the Force is his weapon. However, unlike what the Sorcerers would have you believe, other base materials have their uses...

...those who mock the lightsaber as a Jedi weapon may long for the past all they want, but unless a Sith is willing to explore the painful and difficult art of Force Alchemy - and many are - it is worthwhile to master a superior tool...

...the Jedi cling to several forms that are wholly unnecessary: The Soresu serves destruction of one's foes poorly, and the Niman is only useful as a gateway to Jar'Kai...

... the Jedi place each style in its own box, for that is there way. Do not allow yourself to be so limited. Your style should be your own. I advise, however, against the Saber Throw technique. A warrior's weapon should never leave his hand."

You're exhausted, but still fascinated by the teachings of the Sith. Darth Greia said intensive training began tomorrow. You should ready yourself for it. Your bunk is full of sleeping Sith - the bunks where the two Twi'lek would be conspicuously empty. Telza tosses and turns, but it seems like Fynn is sleeping easily, his breath slow sighs. You spent a good two days getting those artifacts, counting the time spent traveling. You've earned some rest. You fall asleep, thinking about future possibilities.

>anons are riddled with the wrong preconceptions about what it is to be sith and to follow the dark side.
How so? We seem to have been doing OK so far for just an initiate. We even have a good chance of becoming an apprentice
>>
>>40269033
>hugging it out with another acolyte in front of a Lord
>Not merging all of an ancient sith assassin's memories and thoughts with our subconsciousness to gain his knowledge for free
>Declaring they'll make a sorcerer and not studying sorcery when possible
>Accept doing just ok to gain the eye of the Lords seeking apprentices.
>>
>>40269033
I'm not him, but I think killing Fynn would be a decent start. Just as a show of darkness. Let him fulfill a purpose in his running out of usefulness.

Or we could continue to use his niceties to our advantage and kill Bitchy McGee instead. We need to prove our devotion to darkness.
>>
>>40269174
Bitchy McGee seems to be a more competent and useful ally. Where Flynn struggled and nearly fainted using the force, she merely strained herself and fell down to one knee from the exertion.
Then she fought 1v1 against a manifestation of the sith assassin whose soul we destroyed instead of absorbing, and survived.

The score stands 2 for Bitchy, 0 for Flynn
>>
>>40269174
Well killing him and bitchy mcGee wouldn't be out of the question, but right now they can be fairly useful to us alive. Self-reliance and independence is important, but I don't see anything wrong with having some allies. Even Exar Kun had the Mandalorians at his side.
>>40269164
I was also hoping we would merge with that Sith Lord and become one badass being.
Also, even though hugging it out in front of the Sith Lord probably wasn't the safest course of action it didn't seem to hurt us much. Even the Sith are quite capable of finding humor in life it seems.
>>
>>40269174
The sith aren't just edgelords, they want power and for the most part do whatever they have to for it. The main thing about sith is that they use their emotions. Sith aren't necessarily assholes either.
>>
>>40269330
I agree with this guy.
The Sith place a great deal of their beliefs around passion and emotion, we should not forget that.
>>
for the love of god, next possible chance get flyn to force lightning us. we know he understands the pain/quality so even if he can only force spark us we will gain that knowlegde as well
