You are Urist Twelfthbay, a short, sturdy creature fond of drink and industry. You're also the moe personification of Dwarf Fortress, which means every day is an uphill struggle as you futilely attempt to reconcile the innate contradiction that is your tortured existence-

... well, that's the inane bullshit that Gnomoria tried to shove down your throat when she last spoke to you. You're pretty sure she'll never speak to you again, since you responded by trying to pry all the teeth out of her smug, pretty face. The memory of her furious, wounded expression will warm your heart until the day you die-

Anyway, your status as Dwarf Fortress's representative in Gamindustri means that you see no point in wacky anime shenanigans, you don't understand why you can never find any restaurants serving a good *cat meat roast*, and you dream of one day growing a long and luxurious beard- but since cute anime girls and facial hair don't mix, that dream will never be realized.

Well, if there's ever a time to put aside your constant bellyaching, it would be now. Because from where you're standing, it seems like Gamindustri is perilously close to getting embroiled in another goddamned Console War- not the usual jockeying for higher shares, but the widespread nation-versus-nation conflict that'll set adventurers at each others' throats, redraw borders using blood as ink, and violently reshape the landscape.

And between the no-holds-barred battle between Vert and Blanc (a Xbox vs. Nintendo showdown that ended poorly for the latter), the suspicious communications blockades shutting down all communications from inside Leanbox, and the disturbingly powerful minibosses coming out of the woodwork... well, all signs point straight at Leanbox. Whatever's gonna happen in the next few months, it's all going to start from the closest thing you have to a home country.

You're not naturally the heroic type- if it were up to you, you'd be getting your scrawny ass as far away as physically possible. So you're not going to Leanbox because you think you can make a single fucking difference: you're going because you've got a friend caught up in the middle of all that bullshit- Mojang, who thought she'd be getting the promotion of a lifetime- and because Maia (and her civilizations, you suppose) apparently has information for your ears only.

Perhaps most importantly, Estelle just ran over there alone to save Blanc, and you're not leaving your big sis stranded in unfriendly territory if you can help it.

... 'course, looking at the brilliantly shining rainbow stretching across the ocean, you're not so sure she needs the help.

"Damnedest thing I ever saw." The farmer shakes her head, not looking up at you- she's more focused on the covered wagon in her care, hammering nails with all the quick efficiency of a one-woman production line. The half dozen white oxen don't even twitch their ears at the noise, and the farmer just talks right on over it all. "That slip of a girl in blue armor didn't even pause for breath, she just ran right up to the shore, pulled out some sorta doohickey, and bam! A rainbow road, as neat as you please."

Rokko leans down, the reflected light turning her armor every shade but blue, and she raps her knuckles against the rainbow. Judging by the sound, it's as solid as motherfucking steel. "N-Not unexpected," she murmurs haltingly, her electronic voice buzzing harshly. "And not unprecedented. Estelle was. In a h-hurry. But she burned a lot of power to m-make this."

"I dunno about that. But she left a message for you folks- the blonde in blue armor and the little braided lady." The farmer puts down her hammer and shoots an uncertain glance at your other party member. "Didn't say anything about another knight, though-"

She's with us, you growl, keeping your voice low and graveled without even thinking about it. So far, your third party member hasn't been very talkative, keeping her trademark shovel out and ready- she's quietly observing the two of you, and with how her helmet's only facial feature is a T-shaped hole, you can't read her expression at ALL. It's a marked change from how readily she agreed to help you two out, to be honest-

"Right. Well, the road ain't gonna last forever, so all y'all had better hurry across if you want to get to Leanbox. And I've got just the thing..." She shoots you all a grin before jerking a thumb at the sign you'd missed-

>Ferry ride! to Leanbox
>Why not Travel in Style!
>Ride the covered wagon tour of the Lastation-Leanbox channel
>Ford or Float style trips available!

You squint at the sign. Then you glance over to the rickety wooden (and VERY wheeled) wagon and its clear lack of any flotation devices. The farmer catches your stare and immediately misinterprets your meaning. "What, y'all don't think we'll make it across before the bridge disappears? I guarantee that this baby'll be hell on wheels on that rainbow bridge!"

"T-That won't be necessary," Rokko interjects as smoothly as she's able, swiveling to face you. "Deploying the Rush Jet w-will be. Much simpler."

Good- and it's probably cheaper and faster, too. As long as all three of you can reliably fit onto the thing, it'll probably be- ... oh. Okay, you SWEAR you just saw Rokko's expression shift slightly. C'mon, cough it up, what's the catch? There's GOT to be a catch, right?

"... the R-Rush Jet comfortably seats one," she murmurs, glancing away.

Oh. Oh, GOOD. More shenanigans, just what the doctor ordered. And you're STILL recovering from your party members ~accidentally~ squeezing your Stray Flesh Balls (Tame) like a goddamn accordion-

"I believe I have a few relics which may be of assistance," the shovel-wielding knight says out of nowhere. She hesitates, glancing over to the poker-faced robot. "Although they might... not be as helpful as the Blue Bomber's contraption."

.... right. And you could probably whip up a minecart, which you KNOW for a fact will reliably fit everyone- the rainbow bridge's wide enough to accommodate ten of the damn things running side by side- but you can't really guarantee any sort of steering capabilities. Like, at all.

So, how will you make the journey to Leanbox?

[ ] [TRAIL WAGON] Hire the farmer and her wagons to drive you over. It'll be the slowest method (short of walking), but none of you will have to burn energy conjuring ways to get across.
[ ] [SHOVEL KNIGHT] Rely on the Shovel Knight's relics to get you across. There's enough to go around for the three of you, but aside from being the second slowest, it'll burn her out right quick.
[ ] [RUSH JET] Rely on Rokko's mode of transportation; this will be quite fast, but will strain the Blue Bomber's powers the most. And it'll be a really tight squeeze.
[ ] [MINECART] Cram your two party members into one minecart and roll the damn thing across. This is a very fast method, but will strain you the most- and you're not sure how you'll STOP once you're across.
[ ] [OUR POWERS COMBINED] Combine your minecart, Rokko's Rush Jet, and Shovel Knight's relics into the absolute fastest mode of transporation, getting you there nigh-instantly. What's the worst that could happen?

>[X] [OUR POWERS COMBINED!]

The Rainbow Bridge. One of Estelle's enduring legacies, the first big miracle of Gamindustri's 8-bit era, and one hell of a way to travel, provided that everyone at the end of the rainbow clears out of the landing zone before the Dragon Warrior turns it into a small crater. Clearly, your big sis either gives no fucks about staying beneath the radar- time IS of the essence if she's gonna get to Blanc before anyone else- or it slipped her mind.

More to the point, the Rainbow Bridge sure as hell isn't a permanent fixture, so you're gonna have to make up your minds real damn quickly.

"THAT thing? It sure ain't gonna get you across in one piece," the farmer snorts, eyeing Rokko's Rush Jet scornfully- sure, she's still smarting from having her wagon cut from the running so fast, but looking at the beat-up red dog-bot, you privately share her opinion. Like its owner, Rush has seen better days: its red metal shell's rusted and even peeled back in some places, exposing wires and gears, and its movements are jerky and uncertain. 'Course, also like its owner, it's certainly /willing/, going by how its bent tail hasn't stopped wagging (albeit slowly). "Mark my words, you'll be shedding passengers left and right. At the speed you'll be going-"

"Affirmative. S-Speed is of the essence," Rokko replies curtly, keeping her gaze fixed on you- she LOOKS unfazed, although the way her eyes are half-lidded, you can't help but feel that the farmer's getting under her skin. "Going by wagon would, g-greatly increase the chance of the bridge. Disappearing from under us."

The farmer simply snorts again, crossing her scarred arms. "You'd be better off using Ye Olde Knight's doodads," she mutters stubbornly. "Even if you WOULD have to take turns passing them around. Adventurers these days and their toys-"

"Nonsense! Having a wide and varied selection of tools is a time-honored tradition dating back from the glory days of Lowee and Planeptune alike!" The Shovel Knight shoots back, puffing out her chest(plate). "Is this not a valuable lesson passed down through the ages, from our... our forebears?" She tilts her head slightly, most likely shooting a sideways glance over to Rokko- the robot nods, causing the Shovel Knight's chest(plate) to puff out even further in something akin to pride.

Strange. Your new party member's been acting a little strange around the Blue Bomber, but you can't quite put your finger on it-

Your eyes widen as the Rainbow Bridge grows narrower imperceptibly. Okay, no, you don't have TIME for all this goddamn jockeying! You've gotta get over there as fast as possible, otherwise- otherwise you'll have to FORD the fucking channel by oxen-pulled wagon, or choose any number of even more horrible transportation methods (like the gigantic cannon stationed at the far end of the beach)!

"U-Understood. I will get Rush r-ready-"

Rokko is brought up short by your hand against her arm. Not quite. See, you're a dwarf. Mayhem is in your blood, which is why so much of it ends up violently exploding out of your body on a regular basis- well, okay, what you're TRYING to say is that dwarves don't just blindly accept the path of least resistance, or the easiest way to do a fucking thing, or the lesser of two evils.

You turn to the farmer. You're renting the wagon for a trip across the channel, starting right now. THAT gets her grinning, and she's rubbing her hands together gleefully.

"Great! We'll hash it out on the way there, but the way this usually goes is that you pay me half now, and the rest when I get all y'all safely across-"

She trails off as you matter-of-factly tear off the wagon wheels, half-disassembling the rudimentary suspension. "Or, or you could pay the full price now," the farmer continues weakly, her mouth sent in a rictus grin. "And I won't shoot your face off at point-blank range like I could be doing /right now/-"

Stop being such a big baby, you'll put it back together once you're all over Leanbox.

"Don't you mean safely arrived in Leanbox?" Shovel Knight asks, raising her hand meekly.

Well, that's... look, can someone just hand you a rope or a chain or something?

"I-I am not splitting the bill for this," Rokko deadpans, handing you Rush- seems she's cottoned on quicker than the others. "Y-You are covering the full price on your own."

>10 (+2): Fail!
>12: Fail!

Some minutes later, Rokko's calm voice eventually manages to pierce through your concentration. "Urist? Urist. E-Estimated chance of s-successfully crossing the channel are dropping rapidly."

What? Shit, is the Rainbow Bridge fading already? You're almost done-

"E-Estimated chance of successfully crossing the channel is. Still dropping."

You come down off your stupid dwarf megaproject construction high and stare in mild perplexity at the THING you have wrought with your own two hands. W... well, okay, perhaps on hindsight, you shouldn't have ripped out the wagon wheels and attempted to replace them with minecarts. Also on hindsight, maybe the FRONT of the wagon wasn't the best place to attach the Rush Jet, with Rokko standing on it like a surfboard. (although you're sorta proud that you managed to harness the oxen to the sides of the wagon).

"Are you sure I should be the one to do this?" Shovel Knight asks nervously from the back of the wagon, her hands splayed across the assorted relics duct-taped to the wood- there's some sort of gauntlet, dagger, and mechanism-filled gear contraption. Right. She's, uh, going to be providing propulsion from the back. Just in case something catastrophically fails in the front.

... that sounded better in your head.

The farmer is slightly ashen-faced as she peers out from inside the wagon- its bed is a good four feet higher off the ground, the wheelless axles lodged precariously through the minecarts (strange, you could've sworn you'd attached them better). "This isn't worth the money," she mutters, arms wrapped around herself and looking for all the world like she's been struck by a sudden bout of dysentery. "Why did I let you do this thing? Why did ANYONE let you do this thing?" she suddenly growls, shooting a glare at your party members.

"U-Urist is a born tinkerer. I trust her, judgment," Rokko states firmly. After recent events, a darker part of your psyche can't help but wonder if she's just a horrible judge of character-

Shovel Knight bows her head. "... she is on a quest to be reunited with someone in need. I have walked in her shoes before."

Maybe they're ALL just horrible judges of character, you reflect as you clamber onto the driver's seat. You don't say that out loud, of course- you just tell Rokko to hit it.

"A-Affirmative." She leans down and pats the robot dog's head; you think you see her lips twitch a little, but you can't be sure. "Give it everything you've got, Rush."

... on hindsight, you really, really should have asked Rokko exactly what constitutes as "everything." The words scarcely leave her mouth before you're nearly deafened by the Rush Jet's propulsion systems /screaming/- the world around you lurches and then blurs as the wagon's dragged from zero to sixty almost instantaneously, leaving you to grip onto the seat for dear life. Distantly, you hear the oxen mooing in alarm as they're also dragged into a full gallop (or whatever it is that's used to describe cows running, you don't fucking know), their hooves rumbling against the solid rainbow.

You grit your teeth, eyes watering as Leanbox begins looming large in the distanc, and, there's a terrible, terrible moment where the aged wooden frame groans and seems to /buckle/ under the immense strain being placed upon it, even as the minecarts' wheels spin into full gear- and then there's SOME sort of noise from the back of the wagon, like a propeller going off and gears grinding together. Which is great and absolutely as planned, since it means Shovel Knight rose to the occasion, except for the fact that it doesn't stabilize the ride. Rather, this entire twisted contraption actually begins /accelerating/, speeding you along even more quickly.

You relax a little as the scenery outside whips by even faster than before, clouds seeming to blur into a solid white stripe. Sure, you're not all quite driving in a straight line, but this ain't so bad- hell, you're sure to outpace the Rainbow Road if it starts disappearing, and you'll be there in record-

"My oxen! MY OXEEEEN-" the farmer wails.

You lurch upright and look out the sides, staring in mild horror at the flying cloud of brutally discombobulated body parts and fine red mist that used to be a half-dozen oxen. You gulp, not even daring to look back at the owner of this wagon and the bunch of former animals that used to pull it when they were whole. S... shit. Oxen sort of disintegrate when they're dragged along at supersonic speeds, don't they-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9uHKpkii7I

Something tells you to fling yourself to the side, and you do just in time to avoid getting shot in the back- another barrage of poorly-aimed buckshot light up the side of the wagon, punching holes through the aged wood. "I'll kill you, you son of a bitch!" the wild-eyed farmer howls, swinging her shotgun wildly- the contraption wobbles dangerously as you block the shot with your liquid metal gauntlets and push her back, but that just puts her at range again, and she swings the business end of her firearm around-

(Cont.)

"T-This is. Ill-advised." Rokko's monotone has a curious strained buzz to it- she's flat against the Rush Jet's back, either guiding it directly or clinging onto dear life, who even knows?- and it's clear she's in no position to help you, let alone Shovel Knight in the back. The farmer's beyond listening, and the next shot nearly clips your braids. More importantly, it punches straight through the chains connecting the wagon to the Rush Jet AND the front axle connecting it all to the minecarts-

And just like that, at the highest point of the Rainbow Bridge, the entire fucking contraption falls apart like a bridge made of soap that some idiot flooded with magma. Shovel Knight's flying out the back, clutching her relics; Rokko and her robotic aide go zooming off while trying to regain their balance, suddenly free from the weight of the wagon; the farmer's flying off with what remains of her livelihood, screaming bloody murder, and you-

You're flying another way entirely, right off the side of the Rainbow Bridge.

Beasties! Some probably float, or maybe one can swim? As long as it isn't a cccc... a cccaaa... a bad fish of some description.

I'm starting to forget what Urist even HAS in her inventory.

Not a whole lot! Aside from her basic armor, liquid metal gauntlets, and the same crap crossbow she's had since the very beginning, she has the chunk of Sharicite she got after fighting Keeper and also a strange key-shaped rock Gamindustri Graveyard Key Fragment.

She also has the nightgown that gives her a bonus to messing around in DF Arena.

Also, looks like DF Arena is the winning vote, so- writing!

clearly we need to jurry-rig the crossbow into a grapplingbow. Maybe we can raid Just Cause-tan's armory for that.

>[X] [DF ARENA]

Even with indescribable terror flooding your brain and the absolutely horrible gut instinct that tells you that you're falling fast enough for every organ to take the full force of your impact against the water, you don't scream. Even now, you absolutely refuse to scream like the little girl everyone thinks you are; when you get right down to it, dwarven pride is pretty much the only thing you've got left.

Falling does some real strange things to your little localized branch of physics- everything takes on a completely weird tinge, like you're not quite part of this reality anymore. Shards of wood hover frozen in mid-air, an oxen leg over there spins end over end, and distantly, you can even see Rokko's eyes barely start to widen. It's as if you don't exist between hurtling off the edge of something and hitting the ground, and every moment in the middle takes place elsewhere.

As strange as it sounds, you're having a real fucking zen moment here. The last time you felt this way was back in the caves between Lowee, Lastation, and the edge of the continent, when you'd suddenly got trapped in that annoying goddamned dream-

- and when you're blink, you're right back in that little corner of non-reality.

For a moment, you squeeze your eyes shut and you don't even DARE to move. Sure, you cut a horribly adorable figure with your face scrunched up and your entire body as rigid as a board, but you stay still until your stomach settles back down- you have no desire to see the horrible, almost irremovable green pea soup that is dwarven vomit, unable to be washed away even by the rain.

Then, and only then, do you open your eyes. You're standing on firm, solid ground. Even though you're under a peaceful night sky that's lit only by the occasional shining star, there's more than enough light to make out all the details surrounding you- that is to say, there's almost NO details. As far as you can see, the ground is a uniform carpet of perfectly tended grass; the only landmark stands in front of you, the burnt lava-ruined wreckage that used to be the picture-perfect human-style house.

It doesn't even occur to you to ask why you're here, or worry about how your real body will be a broken mess a few minutes after you wake up. All this just feels... right, somehow.

A couple shadowy figures lurk in the ruins, and you can't make out their facial features or even their outlines. Off to the sides, you can see dwarves- ACTUAL dwarves with beards and muscles and achingly familiar features, not the little human girls masquerading as dwarves. Not like you.

... you, in your goddamn cutesy nightgown with frills and a ribbon on the chest.

[ ] [PRACTICE BUILDING] Stick to the outskirts of the ruins and practice building things. After the debacle that's you trying to create actually functioning vehicles, you could use all the help you can get- and there could be a more /concrete/ prize in it for you.
[ ] [PRACTICE SUMMONING] You've almost killed your friends with that Forgotten Beast, and you don't want to have a repeat of THAT. Especially since you could use a creature to help you not fall to death.
[ ] [CONFRONT FIGURES] Go into the ruins of the burnt-down house and ask them what the hell they're doing in your dream- or, even better, chase them right out.
[ ] [CONFRONT DWARVES] Go to the edges of your dream area and try to talk to the dwarves. You're not even capable of summoning dwarf minions yet, so why are they here?
[ ] [DF THERAPIST] Reach out with your mind and see if you can ping anyone else in the immediate area. After that last shared dream (and the one enemy within), you're not taking chances.

We need to be ready for when we wake up and resume falling.

Mechanical flying oxen! Maybe that'll keep us from getting shot. Because we have enough enemies without making more.

Oof. I'm drifting off, so I'm gonna call the thread here; we'll pick up on Tuesday, 6/2, at 9-ish pm EST with [PRACTICE BUILDING] and [DF THERAPIST]!

As always, updates will be at https://twitter.com/BlorpQuest, and questions can go either here or ask.fm/BlorpQuest! Hope you guys enjoyed the (somewhat short) thread, and I'll catch you guys next time!

Apologies for the late start and slow update speed- and also for having to delay the side story until next time, because I may have left what I typed up on my ancient tiny work/travel laptop. I'll have it by Tuesday or I'll eat my shoes.
