The days and weeks and months of training under Master Roshi continued, with the trials almost becoming routine. Chi-chi's birthday came and went, with her requesting nothing more than a weighted training outfit like the one you gave Krillin. Your brother opted to give her a rather cute tiara anyway. With the arrival of the New Year, Roshi announced that he'd be increasing the weights of Krillin and Chi-chi's Turtle Shells to the same as yours, Acer's, and Goku's. While difficult initially, the both of them quickly managed to handle the increase, even keeping up better with the three other students than they did before.

Meanwhile, you kept your promise to Launch, and focused on...

You focused on two things, one tying into the other: teaching Launch's angry self some self-control, keeping her calm and focused, and giving her the basics of ki control as a form of meditation. Even with her actively working towards it, it's difficult, but her sheer determination and stubbornness to not quit keeps her going. By the end of January, she finally manages it. Launch has the basics of ki control down.

With the Tournament fast approaching, Roshi approaches you and comments that your long hair might be a liability, and that you might want to cut it shorter. Your brother agrees with him, in spite of him being aware of just how much you like your long hair. They do kinda have a point...

During the teaching and sparring sessions, Krillin decided to train with Acer, learning his Revenant Driver technique while he learned the Orin Combo. Goku meanwhile helped Chi-chi and Krillin learn the Kamehameha, and while neither can fire one off anywhere close to the ones you, Acer, and especially Goku can, Roshi is impressed and more than a little worried. Meanwhile, your study into the helmet of Chi-chi's older outfit revealed something unexpected: the beam weapon actually is linked to the user's own energy, drawing out some of it in order to enhance its own laser.

You prioritize hanging out with Bulma as much as possible, brobro having much the same idea. The three of you talk tech for hours, Bulma revealing that she's made real progress on your Scouter, with prototype of her own ready for a test run. You try it on, seeing that it uses the Earth's numerical system instead of the Tuffle one, and start scanning around with it.

Acer's Power Level has increased by about 100 now, and will probably increase even more when you're done with training. Bulma's has gone up only marginally, now clocking in at about 10. What surprises you the most is that another Power Level nearby has nearly hit 140, apparently Yamcha, the purple-haired young woman's boyfriend. You again momentarily sense the Power Level of 1030 with the new Scouter, and worry that such a reading really wasn't a glitch. It disappears as quickly as it appears, but... not exactly comforting.

You also take Chi-chi with you during one of your trips, and explain about her helmet's beam weapon. Bulma requests to look over it as well, and while initially reluctant, she agrees. During one of your last few trips, you notice a strange little red robot model in Bulma's room.

You focus on enhancing the Jan Ken with ki, and since you've already put a good deal of time into figuring out the technique, you're more than capable of mastering it in the last few days before the Tournament. You even show Goku what you're doing with the technique, which amazes the boy, him exclaiming how smart you are. He picks up on the technique fairly quickly, though you've refined it the most.

You've trained for months for this, under one of the best Martial Artists in the world. You're ready. Before you all leave, Roshi has the five of you change into something a bit more formal. Suits for Goku, Krillin, and Acer, and rather elegant dresses for you and Chi-chi. Launch, in her blonde form no less, wishes you all luck, telling you she's going to be rooting for you.

You get on a plane with your fellow Turtle School students. Oh if ghost dad could see how far you've come, he'd flip. Well, he'd also probably flip over you keeping the monkey boy alive, but screw that. He's your friend now, and probably one of the nicest people on the planet. Fuck you, ghost dad.

Usually there's a preliminary round, then the main event with the 8 finalists of the preliminaries, though I hear they've doubled that this year to 16." the old man explains as his students all look on with excited expressions, Goku's tail wagging wildly.

Somehow you don't think this is the whole story. Best not to push too hard on this point just yet, though. "Hrm... makes sense. Also, the CLOTHES BEAM only really works off of something natural, shouldn't that mean it's valid?"

"Hrmn... so long as you keep it to just simple bits of cloth, then perhaps. But don't rely on it alone! Opponents will probably know what's up after the first or second attempt." he states emphatically.

When you arrive at the Tournament grounds, it's already close to dusk. Roshi hurries the five of you to the registration table, and after initial confusion over signing up five kids, everything is cleared.

"Hey, Goku, Maple, Acer, glad to see you're here already!" a voice recognizable as Yamcha's calls out to you. As the three of you turn, you notice he's cut his hair shorter. Goku's initially confused by how he recognizes the boy, but at a shout of "Howl! Wolf Fang Fist!" Goku figures it out.

As you wave goodbye to Bulma's group, you mention to Chi-chi that she's a little stronger than Yamcha is right now after the young man's training, even though eight months ago he was much stronger than her. You remind her to keep her guard up, since he's not going to go down easily, but that it should tell her just how much she's improved. You even mention how she's even stronger than you and Acer were when you both first met her. This encourages her greatly, and she thanks you for getting her out to experience the world like this.

After a night's rest, Roshi presents the uniforms you made when you wake up, while Krillin, Goku, and Chi-chi all pitch in to pay for breakfast. All of your fellow students are proud of the new uniforms, and thank you and Roshi for them.

Roshi takes you into the Preliminary area, and then walks off after wishing you the best of luck. Well, this is it. You're finally here. Around you there are more than a hundred other fighters, of various shapes, sizes, and species. Some look almost like monsters, some seem to be far more like regular people. Out of the corner of your eye you notice a man who looks somewhat like Roshi, though with greyish hair and seemingly a slightly more muscular physique. Jackie Chun, you presume? You also notice Yamcha heading towards your group, and greet him.

"Hey hey, nice uniforms, kids. They look good on ya'!"

"Thank you!" Goku, Krillin, and Chi-chi all reply.

"Ladies, gentlemen, and all other fighters, may I have your attention please!" one of the monks wearing orange robes. "We're very happy to have all of you here today. A grand total of 140 fighters have registered for the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament, but as many of you are aware, only 16 will make it to the final rounds. In order to speed things along, we will have all fighters present draw lots, and then engage in one minute elimination matches based on these boards here." the man points to 16 brackets with numbers on them, going from 1 to 140. "Please, everyone select a number, so we can hurry this along."

One by one, every fighter has a number picked. To your collective relief, none of your group seems to have been pitted against one another, and even Yamcha's number is far away from yours. Still, Krillin seems even more nervous, especially when he sees some fighters wearing outfits similar to his when he first arrived.

"Well well well, if it isn't our favorite punching bag." an arrogant, annoying voice addresses your friend, causing him to shiver. "What's this, just got out of bed? You seem to be still wearing your pajamas."

...what did he just say.

"Heh, look, he seems to have found a few friends. Well Krillin, are you ready to embarrass yourself in front of the crowds?" a second voice, somehow even more arrogant and annoying than the first, adds to the one-sided conversation. Both Chi-chi and Goku seem slightly angered. Acer looks like he's about to slug them both through the wall.

"Hahaha, it'll be just like old times! Maybe little ol' punching bag HAS gotten a bit tougher. He might even last half a minute. Heheheheh! Hey, what number are you, Krillin?"

"N-ninety-three?"

"What luck, I'm ninety-four!"

As the two leave, laughing arrogantly, you place both hands on Krillin's shoulders. "Krillin."

"Y-yes Maple?"

"Kick their asses. Show them just how strong you've gotten." you say with a smile and a pat. Goku nods and pats Krillin on the back.

"We know you can do it!" Chi-chi adds.

"Th-thanks guys..." the boy smiles, looking down with a slight blush.

As the numbers get called, Goku is the first of your group to go up. He's pitted against a tall man with a thick accent, who seems embarrassed to be fighting such a boy. Goku readily changes his mind after catching his punch and throwing him upwards, breaking through the roof of the building. He falls down seconds later, clearly unconscious. This encourages Krillin even more, and shocks Yamcha, who seemed like he was about to explain who Goku's opponent was.

Chi-chi is up next, against a man who keep claiming that the girl should go home and play with dolls. She promptly tosses him out of the ring, a shout of "Atta girl!" coming from the window; apparently, the Ox King, Bulma, Puar, and Oolong were all sneaking a peek. No sign of Roshi, and Jackie Chun seems busy with his match. Hmm...

Acer's match goes by just as quickly, knocking out a large green reptile monster with a horn, a man shouting "NOT BARAGON TOO" as the monster is knocked out of bounds. You notice a man with a HORRID stench appear at the window, scaring Bulma and company away from it before Krillin's match begins. Krillin bows respectfully, ignoring his opponent's taunts and opts to kick his opponent right as the match begins, out of the ring and through a wall.

Your match arrives, against a more normal-looking opponent.

"Girl, you best watch yourself against the Great Lee. The diaper brigade may have gotten to Baragon first, but I will not go down so easily!"

You can end this without much in the way of fanfare. As he attempts to strike you, you grab him by the leg and throw him out of the ring. Neat, clean, simple. It still shocks the crowds, and even Yamcha, who keeps trying to explain the backstories of the various fighters here. What is he, a walking Martial Arts encyclopedia? ...then again, that might be useful. You should ask about that some time.

"Nice job Maple!" Goku tells you, congratulating you with a high-five.

"You were great!" Krillin congratulates.

"You did well too, pal." you say as you bump fists with Krillin

"You're all handling yourself pretty well. I might have to try and find Master Roshi myself some day, his training is seriously amazing." Yamcha praises, getting a look from the man you presume to be Jackie Chun. As the contestants dwindle to just a handful, a few people stand out. Aside from the five of your group, there's Yamcha and Jackie Chun, but also a woman with fluffy purple hair, a dragon-ish dinosaur man, a man with tanned skin and an orange outfit, another man with darker skin and a black afro, a gigantic man with red hair, a large blue wolf person in an orange outfit, another blue wolf, a bear person, a boar-like monster man, the INCREDIBLY horrid-smelling man, and a couple other normal-looking fighters. None of them are in any of your Preliminary matches, so it might be best to watch a couple of them. However, best not get too distracted, right? Then again, you might learn something...

"Say, Yamcha, do you know anything about any of these fighters?" you ask the young man, pointing to the curious group.

"Hmm... well, the one that smells like low tide had a kid with the bastard offspring of cat vomit and a corpse flower is Bacterian. He has Herculean strength, but his stench is even stronger." Yamcha informs you.

"Ugh, I hope I don't have to fight him..." Krillin grumbles.

"But you don't have a nose." Goku and Chi-chi both point out. Krillin himself seems to have forgotten that about himself.

"The dragon man is Giran, a powerful opponent who can fly and has a special gum attack that he can project from his mouth. It's said to be unbreakable."

"Heh, I'd be happy to test that." Acer says with a smirk.

"Hrm, the man with the afro is... is..." Yamcha's tone shifts, even he seems a bit scared by the opponent. "King Chappa... a previous Champion, l-looks like he's here to make sure he keeps the title. He once won an entire tournament without even being touched once. He's a legendary Martial Artist, one of the strongest around, supposedly second only to the great Master Roshi."

Now, that seems impressive. Before he can answer any more he's called away to his last match, against the smaller blue wolf person. Yamcha demonstrates his Wolf Fang Fist for the first time, a series of ferocious palm strikes against the opponent's upper body. The wolf man falls unconscious after Yamcha is done with the attack, Bulma cheering for him in the hold in the wall. You make the effort to watch some of the other matches, King Chappa winning his much the same as your group did; one blow ring-outs. Bacterian's last opponent refused to even enter the ring with him, fleeing in terror and revulsion. Giran seems to be a somewhat dirty fighter, tricking his opponents and overwhelming them.

Your own last match isn't much to write home about, you defeating a rather oddly dressed chicken man. Soon, all preliminary matches are complete, and the 16 remaining contenders are asked to step forward.

"Soooo... have any idea who this Jackie Chun guy is?" you ask as you elbow Yamcha's arm.

"No clue, actually. Never even heard of him." he responds, now also looking at the old man suspiciously.

"Master Roshi claimed he was his cousin. He said he might be even stronger than him." you tell the young man.

"Did he now...?" Yamcha asks with an eyebrow raised. He decides not to dig into the topic any deeper, at least for now.

You turn to your friends and stick your hand forward. "Good luck, everyone."

"Thanks Maple." Chi-chi starts.

"We'll all need it." Acer adds.

"We're gonna do out best!" Krillin shouts.

"We'll put everything we have into this!" Goku finally joins in.

"Let's show them what the Turtle School is all about!" You exclaim. You're pumped. They're pumped. This is really it.

All right, honest QM question: for the sake of keeping future rolls interesting, should I do at least best of 3 for your allies and others when it comes to GAINS? Just so the others can keep up a bit better, and post-Tournament there will be even more GAINS available. Even in the immediate aftermath.

Yeah, should be fine. Maybe work it like a catch-up system - the further behind somebody is, the more dice they have, from 1 to 3? (Maple always gets 3, of course, but it would prevent Goku from rushing ahead while allowing everybody else to get up to their level. In-universe justify as 'training with strong people gets you stronger faster')
