Meloetta's Pokeball has been sent to Professor Fir. You only now really start to realize what a big deal this probably is. You tend to tune things out when battling.

The crowd surrounds you in a flood of questions and noise. Vance acts as a natural bodyguard, trying to give you some space and keeping people from getting within touching distance.

Robin looks a bit unsure about being surrounded by a large crowd. The camera crew just struggles to keep the shot on you. Jeanine and Clair seem okay, if a little worried.

A group asks for an autograph, which could take awhile. A quickly assembled camera team from a different network is rushing over to probably try to interview you.

You spot one of the people that tried to throw a ball at Meloetta to catch her in that crowd. That takes a lot of nerves.

Jeanine points to an alleyway you could use to slip away. She doesn’t bother trying to shout over the crowd.

You suddenly stop in front of him and knee him in the groin. “What the hell is your problem, trying to catch Meloetta like that?”

The crowd goes silent at this sudden turn of events. You didn’t put your all into it, since you want him to hear you yell at him.

You slap him. “Don’t pull that on me. You threw a ball at Meloetta in the middle of our fight. How can you even call yourself a Pokemon trainer?”

You feel an intense sense of relief as the crowd seems to be mostly taking your side. They ooooohh and boo loudly, but not loud enough to drown you out.

He shoves you back. Your take the opportunity to try slip a hand into his pocket out of instinct, but you didn’t get a chance to grab anything. “It’s a free region, isn’t it? Why are you singling me out? Someone else was doing it too!”

You bump your chest into him. He clearly outweighs you, but you know how to leverage your mass. You both get into a pushing and grappling match.

This time he moves to take a swing at you. Vance catches it before anyone else can react.

Your back is to the small hole in the fence that leads into the alleyway. You dip through it, leaving the crowd and drama behind for the moment.

You and your friends start walking away quickly from the fence down the alley.

Robin smiles, relieved you’re not reacting poorly. While you hate being a bad influence on her, you know she can make her own choices. She’s been taking control a lot lately, both in bed and now that you think about it, in a lot of other ways too. Is she reacting to her dad? Just feeling more confident and assertive? Is it that thing you’ve heard about where suppressed people go wild to make up for lost time? Maybe it’s a bit of all of them.

You take the card and toss it into the lost and found. “Evidence,” you tell her. “It’s no good to us, and I heard they’re a pain to replace.” You never really had a solid code or anything, but you always avoided taking stuff like ID and other things like it from your marks. It was your way of pretending to be at least a little noble.

She nods in agreement and pockets the money and empty Pokeballs.

“Kat, baby, how are you?” It’s that agent you signed up with. He looks incredibly happy. “I’ve been meaning to call. I told you I’d look out for you, and I meant it.” He laughs and goes over a numbers sheet. “But I suppose it’s that straight forward attitude that’s made your show such a hit. Women ages 25-35 love your take-charge attitude and want to be you. Men between ages... well, men of all ages like you, let’s just put it at that. And young trainers? Wow! Your Pokemon team is becoming a hot commodity. Everyone’s looking for Magnemites and Houndours and everything else you’ve got.” He relaxes back into his chair. “You’ve made it, Kat. Welcome to success.”

You like those words, but you remind yourself that he’s probably really good at telling people what they want to hear.

“Thanks,” you tell him. “Don’t forget the eye.”

He gives a joking salute as you end the call.

You just need the surgeon now. Emma is supposed to be one of the best. You dial her up next.

“Kat! I’ve been watching your show,” she finishes a beer can and tosses it into a recycling bin. “It’s making me very nostalgic.”

You exchange pleasantries for a bit.

She looks down, smiling. How she manages to look down through a view-screen, you’re not quite sure, but she’s doing it. “Kat. I’m pilot, remember? I can meet you anywhere there’s room to land.”

“Are you sure? I don’t want to impose.”

She laughs. “I wanted to see Faeden anyway. We’ve been busy chasing down Team Imperium's operations, but haven’t had a chance to check in there yet. Plus there’s that one shop that sells those nice little bottles of this flavored Vodka...” She laughs at seeing your face. “Kat. We’ll do the surgery, Geno and I will clean up whatever Team Imperium presence there is there like we did with the old teams back in the day, and things will be fine! You worry too much. I can see it on your face.” She cracks another beer. “Worrying doesn’t do your skin any wonders. Take it from me.”

You let out a breath. “You’re probably right.”

“Damn fucking straight I am!” She covers her mouth. “Sorry. I’ve got to watch the language. I forget you’re young. You have the presence of an older woman.”

“I’m not that young.”

“Welp!” She rummages through her bag. “I’ll get the plane ready. Weather depending, I’ll be there tonight or tomorrow morning.”

She ends the call. Before you can think about her flying with a beer in hand, Jeanine taps your shoulder. She points to a gathering group outside the Pokemon center. “The camera crew is waiting at the gym. We can go out the back and lose the crowd.”

“Eye, uhh,” your palms get sweaty. You’ve been doing your best not to think about Robin’s eye until you had everything lined up to fix it. Now that it’s so close, it’s just havoc for your nerves. You can fix this. You’re going to fix this. You can put the image of the arrow sticking out of her head away forever.

Robin looks at you and cocks her head. “Did you say something?”

You put your hand on your own chest. Your heart is pounding. “N-Nothing. I just wanted to talk to Raistlin for a minute.” You step away from the group and take out his Pokeball. You’ll talk to Robin after, you just need a minute.

You release Raistlin.

“Hey,” you start.

He cocks his head.

You’re still feeling a bit off your game from thinking about Robin’s eye. “So, how do you feel about mega-evolution? You know, like what Devon and I do together.”

He looks into the distance, then to you. Slowly, he brings his hand forward with a thumbs up. But there’s also something else he wants to communicated.

“So, you’re game to try, but you’re not sure if it’s possible, or if we can?” You sit back. “Well, I know you know we think a bit differently. I keep reading and hearing that mega-evolution is all about being in sync.”

He nods wisely. Somehow, you sense just a little hesitation.

“Well, first, I think we need to train really hard. You can learn a lot of moves and I think we need to expand what you know.”

He nods in agreement.

“And I also think when we do, you should listen to me up here,” you tap your head. “and really get
comfortable with how I think. But umm, don’t look anywhere you shouldn’t.”

He nods. You see just a little bit of a funny look.

“Then I think all we need to do is just be in a situation where it’s down to the wire, like the first time Devon mega-evolved. If we’re working together really hard towards the same goal, we’ll be in sync.” You nod to yourself, proud of your own logic. “And if that doesn’t work, we can jam together.”

He looks at the spoons in his hands. With what looks like incredible thought and concentration, he bangs them together. He quickly follows up with a little pattern.

“Yeah, like that. I guess you can play the spoons.”

He gives you a look. Raistlin understands the joke, but doesn’t think it’s particularly funny. He’s not offended, just not laughing.

But he does seem to be in ready agreement about everything else.

You figure that’s good for now.

You turn to Robin. She instinctively heads over to you.
