You are Clarissa, a high-school student, Kimiko's Substitute Shinigami, violent murderer, and one of Karakura Town's spiritual protectors.

A powerful spiritual pressure washed over the town like a noxious, crushing wave. The only one who has remained seemingly unaffected by it is your brother Paul, as always completely oblivious to the otherworldly side of things. But if what he was telling you on the phone is the truth - that people are apparently losing consciousness on the streets - then that means that you don't need to be spiritually perceptive in order to have felt that, and your brother's the lucky exception, or something like that.

That explains why so many people were being hospitalized last night right after your rampage. If what Naoko says is true, then that very same wave of pressure - the one that made you feel like your organs were getting pushed out through your skin - has been caused by overwhelming spiritual power; and this time, not your own.

Paul described his surroundings, and you think you've got an idea of where he is. You've decided to go check it out. You tell Ren and Naoko what you're planning to do, and both of them volunteer to go with you. But if everyone leaves, that means the house will be empty. The idea of leaving the house empty bothers you a lot. What if Kimiko comes back while you're gone? You've promised her safety so that she can live a happy life together with you, and you'll start that life off by being absent?

...It's probably a dumb thing to worry about, but it's making you nervous. If she comes back and doesn't find you or anyone else home, she might get worried. You... really don't want something like that to happen. Maybe not all of you need to go there? There might not be anything dangerous going on anymore, after all.

You tell Ren to stay behind. She's hesitant in agreeing to it, not looking particularly happy to be left out. If she had any complaints, she didn't voice them. If the source of that power is still out there, somewhere, Naoko and you would probably be able to do something to it, but Ren would just be in danger.

You briskly make your way through the streets of Karakura. It's impossible not to notice the aftermath of that monstrous wave of invisible force - most people are lying unconscious on the roads, and those who were less afflicted, or perhaps strong enough to recover in a shorter amount of time, are helping them. The help the everyday citizen can provide, and heck, even the help of the rare paramedic, is mostly limited to making sure that people aren't in a position that would cut off their air intake, or treating wounds caused by violent drops, or just making sure that they're alive in the first place.

There's not much you can do to help, and you're not sure if you even want to interact with the source of that massive spiritual pressure. It was very brief, but you could see it being potentially deadly if it was prolonged. Just the existence, just the presence of it was hazardous. You don't even want to imagine being on the receiving end of an attack from such a being.

With how abruptly it was cut off, maybe one of the many Shinigami in town had handled it already. You really hope that was the case.

You can spot the occasional ambulance here and there, most likely positioned at the more populated parts of the town; you didn't even know that Karakura had this many cars available to them. It's a small town, so it's surprising. Maybe after the incident from last night they've gotten backup from elsewhere.

The place Paul described is actually near a park - though you distinctly remember him not mentioning the freaking park. It would have really saved you some time looking for the place. You soon find the place he was talking to you on the phone from... no, the park is still pretty apparent from this angle, if a little obscured by the buildings. Looking around, you don't see your brother.

"Naoko, do you see him anywhere?" If he said that he was going to go help the unconscious people, then he should be here, somewhere. The majority has been helped up to their feet and is resting on benches or the edges of sidewalks, but, well, that must mean that they were out in the first place.

"There's blood." Naoko suddenly proclaims in her usual tone - calm and composed. You feel startled at first, but then realize that it's nothing special. People fell when the pressure struck, and some probably hurt themselves. The girl looks around with her keen eyes, and makes one more statement.

"No one else seems to see it."

If Naoko isn't wrong about that, then the blood belongs to a spiritual being. "Does it... lead anywhere?" You glance at the spot she's looking at. It's just a few drops of blood, well, about a dozen splats. Doesn't look like a healthy amount to lose, for sure - at least not for a human.

She turns her head, searching for more. Her eyes eventually squint in the direction of the park. "There's... a Shinigami there, in a strange hat, walking away. He's carrying someone... I think that's Paul."

Strange hat? What? What is she..?

Oh. You know a Shinigami with a strange appearance. Kurotsuchi Mayuri most certainly had a strange hat, along with... many other strange things as part of his outfit. From behind, it'd likely stand out the most, though.

And that psycho has your brother. You need to do something.

"What the hell is he doing? Let's try to find out, Naoko." The girl nods once, and then one more time to gesture at the Shinigami in question. You can barely see the guy from here, so you need to shorten the distance. There's a ways to go, so you run after him, indirectly. While the Shinigami is making his way through the park in the most straightforward way possible, not at all caring for roads or paths, you move around, keeping out of sight.

Now that you're able to take a closer look, you realize that you were right in your assumption - the mad scientist is casually strolling down the street, your brother unconscious under his shoulder. It's hard to tell at first because of his flowing black robes, but you're fairly certain that his other shoulder is gone entirely. You take note of that, in case you'll need to fight, but can only guess at the cause: maybe a Hollow did it, or maybe the blond Shinigami you've spoken to before already made his move.

You continue the pursuit; it seems that he hasn't noticed the two of you. He's most certainly not heading back to his shop. Maybe that place of his has been compromised, or he still doesn't feel safe enough to return there. Mayuri's path seems a bit uncertain at times, and you feel yourself starting to get suspicious of his intentions. What if he's just trying to lead you somewhere, or trying to throw you off his tail? Well, his pace doesn't seem quick enough for that. Maybe he himself doesn't know where he's going?

He seems to be avoiding populated areas, sticking to wherever people are few in number; a spirit can't be seen, but Paul is still a human being. Probably doesn't want the attention a floating body would bring.

From where you are, a little ways further down the road, is a bus stop, the vehicle parked at it. Naoko squints her eyes and tells you that the driver in it is unconscious - no doubt knocked out by the spiritual pressure. Besides that man, there's no one else inside, or around in the surrounding area. Mayuri makes a sudden turn and enters the bus.

"Wait, what the fuck?" You certainly didn't expect to see that. "Is he messing with us? Why would a Shinigami need to take a goddamn bus? Is he... leaving?"

Naoko shakes her head. She doesn't know, either.

The vehicle stirs to life, hissing and preparing to drive off. "Did he wake the driver up? Shit, we need to do something."

It's going to be hard to remain hidden, but you can't just let him drive off with Paul.

You run out of your cover, waving at the bus driver to wait for a bit. He complies, and holds off on closing the doors long enough for you and Naoko to enter. You have to ask the other girl to pay for you, as you don't have any of your own funds, and she helps you out. The vehicle then starts moving.

The one-armed Kurotsuchi Mayuri, still wearing his obscure face paint, sits in the back. Maybe the driver didn't notice the unconscious Paul lying on the seats a single row ahead, or maybe the Shinigami had means to make the man ignore him. Your eyes meet. He doesn't look surprised to see you. He probably did notice you long before now.

There's a tense silence, or maybe you and Naoko are the only ones perceiving it as tense - Mayuri looks relaxed, as if he really is just a normal guy taking an everyday trip on a bus. As if you're the strange ones for staring at him with so much hostility. You know you're here to talk it out, somehow, but you don't know what to say. You're not sure if it's a good idea to mention the fact that the young man this Shinigami kidnapped is actually your brother; who knows what ideas will crop up in his sick head.

For better or worse, the ex-captain is the first to speak up. His tone is just as relaxed as his sitting pose. "He saw me. Unusual, but on its own, nothing special. The interesting occurred when he looked around and realized that he was the only one that could see. That was when the boy took a glass shard and attacked me." He moves one of his long sleeves away from his chest; there, through the black robes and flesh of the torso, slightly below the heart, was a small hole about the width of a thumb, somewhat alike to that of a Hollow.

"A wound that can't be healed. Not with my serum, not with Demon Magic. After inflicting it with a speed that humans simply shouldn't have, he wanted to continue and inflict more. But fainted," Mayuri scoffs, looking over at the young man. "No matter how strong your ability may be, it seems that it all counts for nothing if you haven't got the capacity to sustain it."

He pauses; his eyes look down at the ground of the moving bus. Contemplating. "If you, with your seemingly infinite reiryoku, found a way to combine powers with him, it would be quite something..." He finally looks up, directing his attention back at you. "Are you here to take him back? Is he yours?"

The Shinigami straightens his back, a lively spark in his eyes wordlessly inviting you to actually do it. His sheathed sword is to his side, placed on the seat. The weapon is further away from the healthy arm than it is from his missing one.

"Do you know him, or do you just want to be a hero? Is he a complete stranger, or is he a friend or loved one? Is he a cousin or a brother of yours? Well? Tell me." His voice is malicious, as if he's trying to somehow taunt you into revealing the information. Mayuri shortly backs down out of his enthusiasm when you hesitate in your answer, hunching over again.

"I don't care. It means nothing, and it changes nothing." A sudden lack of interest, like a mood swing. He seems... nervous, in a way. Maybe losing his arm put a damper on his mood. It's probably good that he's not so eager to cut you into pieces for looking at him wrong anymore, but you feel that his fickle behavior could easily take a turn for the worse.

"Look, I'm... sorry about the... your arm and injuries. But I need that guy back. Where are you even going? Why the bus?"

He doesn't even twitch when you speak up, as if he doesn't even hear you. You were expecting a response of some kind, maybe a mocking smirk or an angry fit, or... well, something. Anything. Mayuri sits still, though it's not like he's waiting for you to continue. As if suddenly realizing something after a prolonged delay, his eyes rise up to your feet.

"Who said anything about an arm? That's completely unrelated," He says. The eyes slowly creep up to your face, and then slightly higher than that, at your hair. "A yellow haired dog is responsible for that. This isn't an injury worth spending my serum on."

...He must mean that other Shinigami, then. Or, since he's looking at you, maybe he knows that you're the cause of it.

"The fool actually believed that I wouldn't have the gall to break his barrier and flood this world in spiritual pressure. And to think that he's taken my place. Soul Society has really lost its mind." The scientist scoffs.

You don't feel any hostility in Mayuri's glare. It's a displeased one, certainly, but not openly malicious as of yet. It seems that your snitching hasn't been discovered. That's probably for the best.

"Well, as soon as he regains control of his limbs, he's going to get back to hounding me again. I'm leaving this town. Where is this bus headed? That doesn't mean anything to me. It hurts to walk with a hole in my chest, idiot."

His ramblings are now directed at you, apparently. It seems that, after that delay, he's actually answering your questions in his own zoned out way. The Shinigami does look almost asleep as he continues talking. Maybe he's... drugged?

(1/2)

"I had to destroy my base to secure my research. The bastard wanted it more than my head. He wanted to substitute his own lack of talent with my work. My head hurts from having to hold so much information in. But it is a good pain. It's proof that even though I've been thrown away by the Seireitei, I can still progress on my own. I don't need them. They're all fools and incompetent imbeciles." Mayuri lifts a hand up to his head and touches his temple, like he's making sure that everything is still there, in its proper place. His eyes aren't looking anywhere.

You feel like he tried and wanted to raise his voice, but was unable to. What does he mean, 'holding information in'? Is he a robot? Well... he still didn't respond to your most important request.

"...And it's convenient." He mutters, as he stares down at the bus' floor. A sentence meant for a subject already closed.

You hesitantly begin walking forward. As you come closer to the Shinigami, his sudden silence is making you wary, even with his eyes turned away. When you're about to take hold of your brother to lift him up and carry him off, the madman speaks up again.

"He's a valuable specimen. Keep him away from dangerous things. Especially spiritual ones. No telling what kind of consequences his power might bring." The eyes are finally directed at you, and only after he finishes talking. Did he just permit you to take your brother? You're not sure, but it certainly sounds like it. You're not going to argue with that. You're not going to mention anything about the subtle threat, either. He spoke as if he intends to take him back; like he's telling you to be careful with a thing he owns while it's in your borrowed possession.

You lift Paul up into your arms and step back, towards the exit. You don't really have any more business with this guy. He should feel free to get the fuck out, really. It'd make you sleep better at night, for sure.

(2/3)

"And you too. When I set up a new base, when that hound tires of chasing me - I'll be there, girl." A much clearer threat, spoken without any particular maliciousness or liveliness, as monotone as the rest of his ramblings. He's serious, nevertheless.

...It's probably time to press the emergency stop button and bail out before the bus gets out of town. You're pretty sure that's where it's headed. But, maybe before you leave...

"...Didn't you have a girl with you? Nemu, was it?" You ask, a little curious. Did that blond Shinigami...?

"I threw her in the path of the enemy's sword," The response is surprisingly quick. You hear something like a scoff from him. "Unfortunately, she was so pathetic that she couldn't move after a single swing. A thing I made!.. Maybe she's still there, buried under the rubble. How useless. And how embarrassing of me to be probed about a failed project by a stranger. Drop the subject, girl. Pursue it any further, and I'll take it as an insult to myself as a scientist."

You're not going to push it. You're upset about it, of course, and your expression clearly displays the displeasure; he's not looking at you, though, his eyes still stuck on where Paul used to lie. This scumbag so carelessly discarded a person, a human being, just for his own sake, and then isn't even slightly grateful for the sacrifice. But he's leaving. You won't have to see him again. There's another question that's been nagging at you ever since the beginning, ever since Mayuri's shown that he's willing to talk. You were wary of asking it, but this is probably one of the few remaining chances you have.

"Do you know where Kimiko is?"

Another motionless pause, as if he didn't even hear you. You're sure that he has, though. The wait is painful this time. You feel like repeating yourself when it begins to grow unbearable, but it's at that point that the scientist speaks.

"The vixen left to Soul Society."

...Your heart sinks and skips a beat. You can't tell what sort of conclusion this man wants you to come to. You understand what the words mean, but you can only guess at what they imply.

(1/2)
>>
>>40391523
"...Explain it."

Once again, silence. After another painstakingly drawn out pause, he turns to face you, and all but rolls his eyes with a chiding glare. As if to say that there's nothing to elaborate on. As if telling you to accept reality for what it is and quit pretending to be dumb.

"Explain it!"

He really does roll his eyes. Makes you want to shove a sword down his smug fucking throat. "If you're asking me if she'll come back, then I don't know. Why would she? With how incompetently she handled this city, she'll most likely be assigned a different duty. Not just the Hollows, but leaving behind a would-be Shinigami. Utter incompetence."

Mayuri badmouthing Kimiko is making your head boil. A hand over your shoulder snaps you back into a state of relative composure. It's a good thing that you didn't go alone.

"Is... is there some way to get to Soul Society?"

Mayuri makes a slightly surprised face. The corners of his mouth then tip upwards a bit, but it's brief enough to make you question whether or not you really saw it. "No. I have the knowledge, but not the means. Not anymore. It seems that your involvement with the other side of this world ends with me."

And with that, he stops talking yet again. You... can't find anything to say, either. He said it himself - he can't do it anymore. And you feel that when he becomes able to again, he won't be inclined to help you. If it's not him, then it'd need to be another Shinigami. You can't just stroll up and ask one of them to lead you to their home. And it can put Kimiko at risk. You can't do that.

Silence. A stifling, deaf silence. There's... no way to get to her. Is there really no choice but to wait? Somehow, it feels awful. The only thing you can do is wait. It makes you feel completely helpless.

The seat Naoko holds onto for support squeaks. The floor creaks. The engine quietly roars. The sounds have gotten loud and obnoxious. You're sick of them. The previously clear and blue sky is clouding over. Maybe the weather's finally caught on to the fact that summer ended, and autumn's begun. About time. You've gotten sick of the stretched out summer.

"Stop the bus." You say, and Naoko presses the emergency stop button. Paul is starting to feel heavy in your arms. The aching of your limbs brought you out of your brief haze. The scientist lost his interest by now, and feels content with wordlessly staring downwards in a haze of his own. He keeps muttering something about his head hurting. You have no more business with him. He's simply of no use anymore.

The vehicle stops. You and Naoko step outside. She offers to carry your brother for you, and you oblige her request. You feel weak enough to drop him. It seems that it's a long way back towards home. The bus really did leave town. Well, it's not really a problem.

"Home?" She asks, to which you hold off on nodding.

The girl nods, and positions your brother over to her shoulder for ease of transportation. It's... pretty funny to see him get handled around like that by a girl. There's actually a bit of a long ways for you to walk together before you have to split off, but Naoko is, well, as quiet as always. You've learned not to find the silence awkward, and to not blame her for being so unsociable. It's... still somewhat uncomfortable, of course, but it's fine. You don't really want to talk, anyway.

You get to walk together for about half an hour before needing to split off. You say something before that. "Oh, Naoko? Could I borrow your cross? I'll give it back to you when we get home."

She doesn't even hesitate in agreeing, and lets you take it. You split up, and another twenty minutes later, you arrive at the shop. Or, well, the pile of rubble that was once the Kurotsuchi shop.

Your house is on the other side of the freaking town. Karakura's a small place, but it seems that even its meager size can get annoying when it needs to. Especially when you don't have the money to even take a bus.

You walk around the ruin for a bit. Cracked boards, broken stone, roof tiles littered all around the street; you don't find anything interesting, though. And especially not what you were hoping to find.

You take Naoko's silver cross out, and let it hang from your hand by the chain. Now, how the heck do you do this? Do you even need to do anything, or is it going to... do its own thing? You saw Naoko use it to somehow direct you to Hollows. You could really use that function right about now.

The pendant doesn't budge at first. Just when you were about to give up and go home, it briefly quivers and tilts in the direction of the rubble. You're pretty sure it wasn't because of your tired arm - it moved of its own accord. You take a few steps forward, closer to the destroyed building, and wait. After a short while, the pendant moves again. It takes some testing from several directions to figure out which spot it's pointing at. You roll up your sleeves and start pulling at the boards when you determine the place.

You're strong, and the rubble quickly gives way. Luckily, she wasn't buried in too unfortunate of a spot, or too deeply underneath. It takes some time, but you get through. Firstly, you find her pale hand. Then the fabric of her black, torn uniform running along her arm, the limb bruised and cut by the shop's remains. And eventually, you find her dirtied face. You lean in to check whether or not she's breathing. The girl flutters her eyes open before you get close. Barely so; her eyelids keep trying to close and make her body rest some more. You can't even tell if she can see you.

She's breathing. She's alive. There's a deep diagonal cut running along her torso, spanning from hip to opposite shoulder. She's been nearly cut in two.

Mayuri did say 'not moving', but he didn't say dead. If Nemu really is something that crazy guy made, maybe she's completely incapable of that?

You sit down on the dirt to take a breath and rest for a bit. The girl is trying to say something, but can't. You sigh. Maybe it's for the best. You feel like you'd vomit if she were to voice her concerns about her nutty pseudo-dad. He doesn't deserve them, that's for sure. Maybe he plays nice around her, but... you kind of doubt that.

You take out your phone, and get ready to call someone. Who do you even call? Can doctors cure someone like this girl, whose body might not even be human? Is she even in a physical form right now, or is she a spirit? You actually can't tell.

...

>Call her an ambulance and head home.
>Take her home with you.

Hope she's a spirit right now or this could get awkward.

Nah but really, let's at least try to take care of the poor thing. Creepy or no.

Alright, thanks a ton for running!
Is our whole family full of fuck-ups?

Wow, I'm impressed by just how quickly snitching on Mayuri backfired.

Clarissa's dad runs a pretty big and successful business, and her mom gets to slouch around and do nothing because she picked a husband who lets her get away with that sort of thing.

Maybe their only mistake was having children like these! Or maybe I'm kidding!

How did it backfire? Nothing really bad happened because of it, right? Well, to Nemu I guess but it might end up an improvement for her anyway.

I'm sure they're lovable enough to make it worth it! Clarissa best girl.

It's gonna be harder to go to soul society now, and since Mayuri apparently was home earlier today, it may have effected whether or not Kimiko stuck around.

I'm sure we'll find a way there. As for the latter, perhaps.
