You are Louise, a well-off lady in late 19th century Paris. In spite, or perhaps because, of your life of privilege you've grown fascinated with theft: the bigger and more daring, the better. As such, you became fascinated with the Sultans treasure, a set of gifts sent by the Sultan of Morocco to the French government as a token of goodwill. After a disastrous attempt at stealing the treasure while it was being transported on train, you've decided you needed to be better prepared to steal the treasure from the Louvre. You already know that its director is a former lawyer called Denis Dupré, you roughly know the schedule of the night shift guards, and you know in what part of the museum the treasure is located. You also have a rough sketch of the floor plan, so you more or less know all the entries and exits of the museum.

During breakfast you go over all these facts with your butler Philippe once more. "It sounds like we're well prepared, Madame. What would you like to do next?"

>'Accidentily' bump into Dupré at the Louvre, try to flirt with him
>Kidnap Dupré on his way home, force him to hand over the keys
>We have enough information already, wait until tonight
>Write-in

For now, the DC of a Louvre breaking and entering is 16: -2 for the floor plans, -2 for knowing the schedule of the night shift guards

Some rules and other affairs of note:
>Louise is an educated woman, and therefore assumed to be fluent in French, Spanish, Italian, English and German
>Louise is affluent, it is assumed that she can afford most services and purchases
>The campaign is semi-historical: the campaign will take place somewhere between 1880 and 1900, but some minor facts or persons may be changed
>Automobiles exist, but are not widely available. Louise does not possess one.

>When a roll is required, the best roll of the first three will be picked
>Rolling a 20 means automatic success, rolling a 1 means automatic failure. They do not cancel each other out
>The standard DC for the theft of a prominent treasure is 20, this means that only a natural 20 will result in a successful theft
>There are many factors that can increase or decrease the DC for a theft, a non-exclusive list will follow

Bonuses:
>Familiarity with or blueprints of the location (-2 DC)
>Gained the trust of a minor key figure such as a guard (-2 DC) or a major key figure such as the captain of the guard or the victim himself (-4 DC) (Non-cumulative)
>The theft is committed while the treasure to be stolen is being transported (-2 DC)
>The theft is committed while the treasure to be stolen is outside of Europe * (-2 DC)

Penalties:
>A major key figure knows Louise and has reason to suspect or dislike her (+4 DC)
>The treasure to be stolen has been stored in a vault, safe or other such secure location (+2 DC)
>The treasure cannot be carried away inconspicuously and no appropriate measures to transport the treasure to a safe place have been taken (+2 DC)

*Colonial and indigenous authorities are presumed to be less motivated and easier to bribe

"I need to get closer to Dupré." you explain to your butler. "We have as much information as we can get right now, anything else needs to come from him. I need to get closer to him, win his trust and pry this information from him. When I know what I need to know, we can start our theft."

By the time you arrive at the Louvre, it's already noon. From what the guards told you, this is about the time when Dupré walks around the Louvre to inspect his guards. Considering the Louvre is way too large and busy to track down a single person, you wait outside and keep an eye out for an important looking visitor. Before long you spot a tall and rotund man with a twirly moustache and a fancy suit being escorted by a pair of guards. You're pretty sure he's the man you're after. You follow him inside and wait until he's distracted. In the antiquities wing he stops to chew out a few guards for supposed laziness. This is your time to strike: you pretend to be a fascinated visitor and bump into Dupré.

In your head it played out so well: you'd knock Dupré over and land on top of him. Your face only a few centimeters away from his, it'd be innocent enough to look like an accident but seductive enough to tantalize him. If only you were as talented at the art of seduction as you thought.

You bump into Dupré, but the rotund man is much more firm and steady on his feet than you expected. You bounce back and stumble backwards a few steps before falling over, dragging a platform along with you. Time seems to flow slower as a large urn is sent flying through the air and shatters in front of Dupré's feet. The entire hall grows silent and Dupré looks at the shards in front of him with disbelief. He then looks at you, his face growing red. "You insolent, incompetent child!" he roars at the top of his lungs. "That was a priceless Etruscan masterpiece! It was a gift of king Victor Emmanuel II! It's one of a kind!" He heaves and pants heavily. None of the visitors dare say anything, and you can feel their prying eyes scanning you. You wish you could just sink into the floor and disappear.

"Guards! Guards! Make yourselves useful for once and get this wench out of here!" Before you can even get up, two guards grab you by the arms and literally throw you out of the door. "Don't let me ever see you in my museum again!" you can hear Dupré shouting.

That... could've gone better.

>Go home, prepare to rob the Louvre without Dupré's information
>Go home, prepare to kidnap Dupré on his way home

A little bruised and thoroughly humiliated, you make your way home. Looks like you're no longer welcome in the Louvre. Such a shame, considering it houses many priceless artefacts other than the Sultans treasure.

When you get home, you quickly inform Philippe about what happened. "Everything went wrong, I'm banned from the Louvre. Don't ask, I don't feel like talking about it." Deciding not to press the issue any further, your faithful butler tries to cheer you up with a cup of tea.

"I'm not giving up!" you decide. "I'm getting the Sultans treasure somehow. If I can't get Dupré's help by playing nice, I'll get it through force."

"Certainly you don't mean to kidnap him, madame?"

"That's exactly what I mean!" you reply with fierce determination. "Prepare some disguises, a horse, a cart and a lot of rope! Whether he wants it or not, Dupré is coming home with us tonight!"

At around 6 pm, all preparations have more or less been made: Philippe has left a horse and cart at a nearby location, the two of you are disguised and you've found a safe vantage point in a small alley. With a cane in your hands and your revolver by your side, you wait for Dupré to pass by. The plan is to shadow him to an isolated location and then knock him out.

It's not long before you see Dupré leave the Louvre, accompanied once more by two guards. You shadow the trio with Philippe by your side, and see them enter a dark and quiet alley. You nod at your butler, and the two of you charge in with your canes. The plan was to knock both guards yout with strong strikes against their heads, leaving the unfit director of the Louvre to fend for himself. Of course, nothing ever turns out the way you want it to.

The guards hear you approach and turn around just in time to avoid your strikes. One of them kicks Philippe in the stomach with enough force to make him double over and collapse, the other punches you in the jaw hard enough to make you stumble back a few paces. Dupré and the first guard have started kicking Philippe. You hesitate whether or not to get involved, but Philippe quickly makes that decision for you by shouting "Run!". You hurry away, but the second guard starts a pursuit. Luckily you're able to lose him with a few shapr turns in various streets and alleys.

Once again, your attempts to get closer to the Sultans treasure have resulted in a miserable faillure. What will your next move be?

Once you're in relative safety, you hesitate for a moment. You could go back home to safety, but that would mean leaving Philippe behind. Ever since you moved to Paris, he has served you faithfully and without question. Even after discovering that you had plans for grand thefts, he remained loyal. Could you really leave him to his fate?

You hurry back to the alley where you last saw Philippe. There you find him curled up into a ball as the two guards kick him, until they're ordered to stop. "That's enough! Take him to the police, let them take care of everything." Before the guards can even pick your butler up, you fire a warning shot.

The sound of your revolver is ear deafening. The loud pang is enough to send Dupré and his guards hurrying away, leaving behind a battered and bruised Philippe. You kneel besides him to check up on him. "Philippe, are you alright? Can you stand? Did they see your face?".

Your butler tugs at the kerchief wrapped around the lower half of his face. "They didn't, by some miracle. We should be safe." He tries to get upbut fails and quickly curls up into a ball again. You can hear him curse under his breath. You decide to help him out by wrapping one of his arms around your shoulders and allowing him to lean on you. Slowly but surely you manage to help him stumble home.

On the way there, your butler can't help but question your motives. "Madame, why did you come back for me? I'm just a lowly butler?"

Your butler smiles, seemingly satisfied with your answer. "I didn't expect that from you, madame, but I'm not complaining."

Once you get home, you patch Philippe up to the best of your abilities. You're not exactly talented, but with a bit of his guidance you manage to take care of your butlers wounds. They mostly consist of a bleeding nose, some cuts and a few painful looking bruises, but nothing too serious. After that you decide to call it a day, but not before your butler expresses his gratitude once more. "Thank you once more, madame. You may have saved my life."

When you awake the next morning, Philippe has already prepared breakfast for you, along with the morning newspaper. You're not yet sure whether to consider him a friend or just a butler, but what you do know is that it's good to have him around.

Your eye falls on the article titled "Ancient books to be returned to Korea". The article starts by explaining how these books found their way to France in the first place. In 1866, the French government launched a punitive mission against the Koreans for the execution of several Catholic priests. During the mission, the French navy managed to capture several important Korean books with dates ranging from the 14th century to the early 19th century. In order to ease the relationship between France and Korea, president Grévy has proposed to return the books, currently stored in the Bibliothèque nationale de France, to the Koreans in exchange for favorable trade treaties. The ship headed for Korea will not only contain the promised book, but also a diplomatic mission.

The article has interviews with several important politicians. While the Minister of War and Minister of Colonies believe that it's a disgrace for France to give in to the demands of a minor 'uncivilized' nation on the other side of the world, the Minister of Finance believes that in the long run trade with the Koreans can be extremely lucrative. Parliament seems divided, with the royalists being against the return of the books, the socialists being in favor and the republicans split among themselves.

The politics behind it all don't interest you much. What you care about is the fact that these books are unique and valuable. You point to the article. "Philippe, we're stealing these books."

Your butler raises an eyebrow. "Madame, I presume you can't read Korean?"

You shrug. "No, but that's not stopping me. Besides, this is much easier than stealing from the Louvre. We need something easy to get us warmed up for the big jobs."

"I can't disagree with that." Your butler gives in. "What's your plan then?"

Philippe leans over your shoulder to check out the article. "They're sending a diplomatic mission to Korea as well. Perhaps we should infiltrate it?"

You shake your head. "No, we're not getting trapped in the middle of the ocean or in some foreign land that speaks moonrunes. We're going to steal them from the national library, before they can even get out of the country."

"That sounds possible..." answers Philippe thoughtfully. "Normally the national library is open to the public, but it's safe to guess that they've stored the Korean books somewhere that's off limits. We won't be able to just walk in and take the books."

"Our attempts to get into the Louvre failed, but we had a good start" you decide. "I'm going to the city hall, to get the plans for the National Library."

Philippe proposes to come along. "I'll go with you. You're not allowed to take any physical copies of the plans with you, so I'll make a quick sketch."

When you arrive at the city hall, you have no significant problems with locating the plans of the national library. Philippe quickly and covertly makes a rough sketch of the plans on a napkin, promising to make a neater version once you get home. It seems to be going fine, but you do start to wonder whether or not it'll appear suspicious if you come here too often. Nobody has any reason to connect you to any attempts to steal from the Louvre luckily, but you still can't help but feel suspicious.

On the way home, you reflect on your past faillures. Whenever you try to take action, you're loud and clumsy. You feel like you simply don't have the skill and experience to be a good thief.

"Philippe, I should learn to become stealthier!" you decide. "Surely there are classes I can take or something?"

Your loyal servant takes a moment to think. "You could try ballet classes?" You stare at him with a cocked eyebrow. "Madame, please allow me to explain! Isn't stealth about moving with grace and controlling your body? Ballet is perfect for that. Most importantly, a young woman taking ballet classes wouldn't draw any attention!"

"That's silly!" you reply. Nevertheless, you can't feel like what he's saying makes some sense. It won't look suspicious to anyone, that much is certain. You also consider some other options though. Your father is a rich and connected man, maybe you can ask him if he knows someone to teach you 'subtle self-defense'? Or perhaps you should find a mentor in the Parisian underground?

I see no reason why not. Women disguising themselves as men wasn't something that never happened at the time. I think there was this British woman who joined the Navy by disguising herself as a woman in the 1700s (I think she also got shot in the groin once, and still nobody discovered she wasn't a man. You'd think a doctor would check that out or something).

I guess we already have training in dances as part of our upbringing, so what will ballet help with? Balance and flexibility? General fitness?

I'm voting for ballet as basic training for our body, then we find someone to teach us the real stealth stuff, pick pocketing, lock-picking, etc. if we crit-fail ballet training, there's less risk.

I know :(

As you think over your options, you wonder whether your father could even help you at all. How do you ask him for someone to train you in stealth without appearing suspicious? Looking for help from the underground is probably more realistic, but also more likely to get you killed. As much as you hate to admit it, Philippe is right: given the circumstances ballet is the least suspicious option.

That night, you sign up for ballet classes. You find yourself a beginners class and can get started that same night. The instructor is a middle aged woman who claims to have been a pretty noteworthy dancer in the past. Now that she's too old to keep dancing professionally, she wants to pass on her skill and knowledge to the next generation.

You have learned some formal dancing, but ballet is quite different. You're confronted with how clumsy and stiff you really are. Luckily, the instructor is a kind and patient lady that's more than willing to help you out.

When you get home that night your body hurts, but you feel good about doing something to improve yourself. You even believe that you actually had fun! However, you can't lose track of the Korean books, time is of the essence and you need to get them before they leave the country.

The next morning, you:

You need to find a way to get into the national library somehow. The first thing that comes to mind is finding the man in charge and seducing him. Despite your horrible track record in the field of seduction, you're willing to give it another go. You're gonna charm him for all he's worth.

You ask Philippe if he knows who's in charge. He thinks for a moment. "I did see a name when going through some papers in the city hall yesterday. Frézier... Victor Frézier it was, he's the director.

You have a name, that's a good start. You try to get closer to him by

Beginner's luck.

Maybe we should disguise ourselves as a man and pretend to be an art critic or reporter. Might be more successful than seduction.

The next morning, after having a light breakfast, you make your way to the national library. You're not sure who the director is or what he looks like, you only have a name to go by. You decide to sit on a bench with a good view on the library's entrance and wait, pretending to read a novel. A bit before noon, a skinny man with thick glasses leaves the library. He'd be completely unnoteworthy to you, if it weren't for the fact that someone strikes up a short conversation with him and refers to him as the director. You have your target.

You shadow him away from the library and into a small café, where he orders a coffee (no sugar) and a croissant. Now is the time to make your move.

You get yourself a coffee as well and take a seat across him. "You don't mind it if I take a seat here, right?". The man shakes his head.

So far so good. You start to wonder if you should take a more subtle approach to seduction, one that's more careful and allows you to escape a failed attempt with your ego, your body and priceless historical artefacts still intact. It's worth a try, right? "I'm sorry, but I just had to talk to you. I can't just let such an attractive man walk out of my life."

The man blushes and stammers a demure "T-thank you". You can't believe what's happening: you're actually seducing a man! And nothing has broken yet, not even a single teacup!

You engage in some small talk and try to keep up a flirtatious undertone. He tells you about his work as a director. It turns out that he was only recently appointed and still both overwhelmed and underqualified. You take his hand into yours and try to reassure him. "No, don't say that! If you're as intelligent as you are handsome, there's nothing to worry about!". The man only grows more and more flustered with each compliment you give him. Is this what proper seduction is? You feel like you're starting to enjoy it.

You glance at the clock and pretend to be in a hurry. "I have to go now, but I'd love to meet you again. There's a new restaurant not too far from here, would you like to try it out tonight?"

The man nods. "Y-yes, sure! Meet you at 8?"

>End of part 2

A succesful seduction? It's a sign of the apocalypse! Or at the very least a good point to end the quest for now. The next part will be up on sunday.
