Ask Languid Anything: ask.fm/HellbornQM

Your name is Sierra Beckhoff, and you are a hellborn – part mortal, part demon. Ever since you ran into a family of demon hunters, a lot of weird (but cool) stuff has gone down. You’ve battled rogue generals, joined the a baron’s conclave of demonic advisors, and dueled landmasters. You maybe even met a real live dragon – though you’re not a hundred percent on that one. Most surprisingly though, you just recently graduated high school.

You’ve just tied up the last of your loose ends, helping your boyfriend retrieve his car from an active crimes investigation zone. You’re currently making good your escape.

Now, all that’s left now is to pile in a car and ride into the sunset on your pan-American road trip, obnoxiously sending a postcard back home from every backwater rest stop on the way. Except. You know. You kind of actually have to plan the trip first. Because sometimes bad things happen when you don’t plan.

--

Looking back at the carnage you’ve left behind you, and all the FBI spooks hanging around to impede the real investigation, you wonder what kind of drawbacks there might be for demons living in other countries. It’s obvious American demons have it bad, but how bad does it get, really?

You look over again at Wolfgang, who’s all concentrated on being a good driver. He’s pretty chill and like, cute and stuff when he’s watching the road all intently like he is. “Canada doesn’t have drawbacks,” you say. “There’s nobody in Canada to mess with you.” You should know. You’ve been there, and you barely even saw three people, and that’s including you.
>>
>>40435905

Wolfgang smiles, casually taking a hand off the wheel to scratch his neck. “I consider living alone in the arctic wastes a drawback,” he replies.

“True,” you say. But there are other places that aren’t Canada. “How’s Europe in terms of demoning it up? They’re pretty chill about drugs and alcohol and crap from what I’ve heard, seems like them and their socialism wouldn’t care so much. Or maybe they're even worse because for some reason Nazis.”

Wolfgang laughs. “The people who still subscribe to the Thule Society are mostly skinheads. Sometimes they cause trouble and sometimes they’re loud, but nobody takes them seriously,” he says. “Actually it’s the Illuminati run everything over there.”

“I thought the Illuminati ran everything over here,” you say, looking out the window at passing traffic. “Them and reptiles.”

“Reptiles have nothing to do with it,” Wolf says. “The Freemasons run everything over here.”

You make a thoughtful sound. “Hey. Isaac’s a Masonic Templar,” you say. “How do they fit into everything?”

“The Templar are a subset of Freemasons,” Wolfgang tells you.

“So what’s the difference between the Illuminati and the Freemasons?”

“The Illuminati are secular and the Freemasons are religious,” he explains.

“That vague crap all you’ve got? What else?”

Wolfgang shrugs. “I don’t know, that’s why the call them secret societies.”

You snort. “Okay, but Illuminati or not, I bet the biggest drawbacks would be if you were Chinese yaoguai,” you guess. “I mean, communism’s historically been pretty bad for demons, and China’s full of communists.”

“They’re not committed communists,” Wolf says. “They’re more middle of the road. Though, I bet they would make you to work for the government if they knew you had powers.”
>>
>>40435925

You imagine a Chinese version of Hellboy, with a golden monkey man and a dragon guy and stuff. Actually sounds kind of cool, now that you’re thinking about it. “I guess that would beat living out in the mountains on a farm somewhere, where they’d never find you in a million years,” you say thoughtfully.

Wolfgang takes a deep breath and lets it hiss out between his teeth. “I’m just glad we’re exactly where we are.”

There’s no arguing with that. You drive on for a while, making good time all the way back to the Crowther residence. You leave Wolfgang there, grabbing your bike and heading over to Vikrama’s, eager to get the whole road trip committee up to speed.

--

You begin knocking at the door and ringing the doorbell until little Karishma answers the door, wearing an orange sarong with big flowers all over it. Except Karishma’s a few inches taller than you remember.

The eight-year old girl gives you a careful, making sure to try to be cool. “Oh. Hi Sierra,” she says offhandedly, stepping out of the way for you to come in.

So how long is this trip going to be? Will Sierra have to plan some hunting trips to quench her blood thirst if it's going to be lengthy?

Except you don’t step in, so much as you step directly toward Vikrama’s little sister. “Answering the door was your first mistake,” you tell her in a grave tone. And then with keen skill, you start poking Karkar in the sides. She squeals and tries to block you, but you just turn your attention to getting her neck, and then her stomach. She’s doomed, and she knows it. She flees before you, screeching with laughter.

You kick the door shut behind you, and engage full-on predator mode, stalking behind, attacking her flanks at every opportunity, and maybe a couple of times stopping the little girl from crashing into a table or something dangerous.

You head her off before she can go down the hall that leads to her room, and scare her back into the living room, where you pick her up, toss her on the couch, and mercilessly press the advantage until she’s breathless and in tears.

You sit down by the couch and poke your head up above the edge, allowing the girl to pull back from you to a defensive position, secured by a couch cushion. “No!” she shouts, still giggly.

“Long time no see, ladybug,” you say, sitting your chin in your hands. “How's your dance class and all that jazz?” You purse your lips. “Your friends still jerks?” She couldn’t stop complaining to you last time you stopped by about her jerk friends.

“They are not jerks,” says Karkar, her eyes suddenly blazing with indignance.

She must have got over it. “Huh. But I thought... unless...” you gasp. “You turned into one!”

“That’s dumb,” says the girl, with lots of attitude. “You’re dumb.”

“That’s it. You’ve turned into a jerk,” you say, rolling your eyes as if giving up on her.

She hits you over the head with a couch cushion. “Not either,” she says, pouting.

Good call on the archive, he is still going.
>>
You give her a sly smirk, ignoring how the pillow blow messed up your hair. “How about this. If you go get Shri and Vim, you’re not a jerk,” you say, breaking out your poker face.

Karishma does the math, and you guess she agrees, because she jumps off the couch and speeds off.

While she’s gone, you steal her spot on the couch, squinting at the little shrine thing on the opposite wall, kind of near the TV. You’re not sure what you’re looking at, except it has a lot of arms.

And then a series of screams lets you know Karishma’s delivered the news. Vimala, Shri, and Karishma all rush back in, Shri trying to show you a crayon family portrait, Vimala just jumping up and down in place with a little Princess Elsa action figure in hand. It’s like every month you see them, they’re different people. Or at least they look like older versions of the kids you used to know. Except they still know you, somehow?

After giving each their due attention, you bring order.

“You guys want to learn a song?” you ask.

“What song?” asks Shri, suspiciously.

“Don’t give me that sass,” you say, sitting her down beside you. “Everybody sit down, be quiet, and do the stuff I’m doing.”

They comply. And several minutes later, you’ve managed to teach them one of the best nursery rhymes available on the current market.

“Too fast!” Vimala complains, after you finish another run through. While Shri and Karishma are getting things pretty well by this point, Vimala’s having a tough time. You don’t get it – when you were her age, this was your favorite song. At least you think.

“Let’s do it again but really slow for Mala,” Shri says.

“All right, slow this time,” you say, caving to the demand.. You start in on the song, mimicking walking people with your fingers – the girls do the same, following your lead.
>>
>>40437359

“Walking along to Sary-sary, riding along comes Byel-ga-ru,” you hastily switch the walking motions to rein-gripping actions “Two coins glisten-y and shiney, or two lashes fresh for you.” The girls really get in on the whip-cracking gestures.

“He gets them yes oh any-any, riding along to Sar-tal-coo,” except now you get to the part where nobody knows the words, which is to be expected, given your target demographic. “Counting his coins there's one too many, turns his strider back for you.”

And now the best part in the chorus. You lead everybody in pantomiming the shoveling of dirt. “Dig up a pit for Byeli-byeli, dig up a ditch for Byel-ga-ru, when he rides up he's scary-scary,” you slap your hands to your cheeks, pulling down your face as if you’re melting, “fix up an ending tried and true.”

At this, everybody feigns broken necks. The girls collapse into laughing fits and singing their own variations of stuff.

Karishma looks up behind you and smiles. “Sierra’s teaching us songs,” Karishma explains to somebody behind you.

You turn around and find Vikrama, who is standing in the doorway to the kitchen. "And what sort of song was that supposed to be?” she asks, laughing in disbelief.

>You got all the road maps, right? Or at least googlemaps, I guess?
>To the Vikrama cave! Everybody’s coming, I made sure of that.
>It’s just a song. It’s fun.

You give her an incredulous look. “You seriously don’t know Byeli-byeli? Come on Vik, that’s like not knowing freaking Mary Had a Little Lamb.”

She gives you an amused look. “I’ve never heard of Byeli-byeli. Are you sure it’s not some traditional family song?” she asks.

“Whatever. It’s just one of those creepy nursery school rhymes like London Bridge or Ring Around the Rosy. You’ve lived a deprived childhood,” you say. “Anyway, Rowan and Moriah are coming a little later. You ready to figure this thing out?”

Vikrama looks like she wants to pester you about your song some more, but she refrains. “Of course, darling,” she replies. “I’ve gathered stocks of marshmallows for the occasion, seven months’ worth of provisions.”

“Plan to prepare, you prepare to plan,” you say. Or at least something like that. “To the Vikrama cave!”

You and Vikrama take a couple minutes to make sure her little sisters aren’t too distraught by your sudden departure, and then you retreat to Vikrama’s room.

The room in question is cramped, yet super cozy. She’s got one of those super high beds with room for an entire civilization underneath, and a fancy iron lamp that looks at least fifty years old. Quilts of many colors blanket her bed, and a thick plush tiger carpet takes over the floor. She has a sweet sound system on her nightstand, and the walls are plastered with band posters, hand-made sister art, random school posters, and framed fantasy-themed puzzles depicting dragons, unicorns, and rainbow vistas in their natural habitats.

Also, everything smells like fruity cinnamon, kind of like Vikrama.

Anyway, you cozy up in a corner with a bunch of pillows, Vik hands you a map, and you start spreading out your navigational charts, mostly centered on California and the Bay Area.

“For the record,” she says, sitting cross legged across from you as she sets up her laptop, “this is going to be the most outrageous experience ever experienced.”
>>
>>40438726

You snicker and consider the map. “Bigger maps,” you say.

She pushes a map of the entire US toward you, crossmarked with roads and all that jazz.

“So we’re starting here,” you say, placing a finger on San Francisco, “then we’re going over here,” you drag your finger down to Fresno, “and then...”

“And then we go to Sierra National Forest,” Vikrama says, pointing to the place in question.

You stare closer at the maps. There is indeed a forest named after you. “Seriously?” you ask. “I was thinking Yosemite, you know, for landwell potential.”

“Please, darling. Landmasters the world over would be crawling over that place,” she says. “And if they’re not fighting for all the wells that are there, then I bet a huge dragon or an equivalent parked there and sits on its terrible throne all day, spying on hikers and things like that.”

You narrow your eyes at her. “You’ve put a lot of thought into this,” you say.

She smiles brightly. “Darling, it’s what I would do. But the real question is where we’re going after that. What's your favorite direction?"

>I still say we go pop in at Yosemite, just for kicks. And if there’s a dragon there, all the better.
>I guess I’ll settle for Sierra National Forest. I mean. It kind of obviously belongs to me anyway.

We could give her a landwell boon like we did to Ro.
>>

If we find a well that grants us a boon upon claiming it instead of the billion other things it could do. That's a pretty big if right there.

Vik might not actually be such a bad candidate to boon if we get the chance. She seems pretty enthusiastic about learning this stuff, so pumping her up to low-level angel/demon-tier in terms of magical power could be pretty decent. Giving it to someone else would probably be better in terms of powergaming the allies, but I cba to bother with that shit.

We already found one, so I'm sure it's not a unique trait.

Not saying it'll be immediate or that it won't take 10-15 wells to find another one with similar properties, but if we do we should give it to Vik.

I don't think every landwell would be unique.

just vary them a bit. Make it so a few give a trait that does X. Or a bonus to our Pyro (maybe from one at hot spring, or in the desert) Or a bonus to our Shadow shit from one underground. Our a helath bonus, or summon bonus, etc etc.

If things are varied and they're not just +10 pp or whatever it keep things balanced. Making her stronger without just randomly jumping her up to invincible.

She's a pretty close to baseline mortal, sure she's enthusiastic but she doesn't have much for the Boon to work with. We're better off doing what we can to keep her out of fights. Don't squander boons.

One of the best targets we have for Boons is Reeber. We have him around a lot and he's a Royal Hellhound so the Boon has a solid base to enhance. And really he's been such a good dog so he deserves a reward, after that Harvey, and other Demon people.

Ro grew wings because she's a quarter Seraph already and they have tons of wings. Landwells boost what a person already has or branch off slightly into related areas. It's not like it was a super huge boost in power. It was big, but it's not going to make Vik suddenly get some insane crazy thing out of nowhere.

>Sattler?
Sattler isn't Seraph at all. I'd have to go back and see what kind of angel she is, but she's a 50/50 split between the ones with 4 arms + magic glyphs and the kind that are magic robots. Rowan doesn't have any blood from the types of angels that Sattler does. She wouldn't end up looking like Satt at all.
>>
>>40439529
Vik does have a potential of a caster.
and af far as I know more mage / casters are always good.
>>
>>40439529
I don't think we can boon Reeber.
>>
>>40439564
So is Cassandra, still badass.
>>
>>40439570
>Rowan doesn't have any blood from the types of angels that Sattler does
Yes she does.

Ro is 1/4 Seraph. Satt is 1/2 Serapth and 1/2 Angelbot.
>>
>>40439564
Which means she's like that witch chick from the not-Hot Topic that Moriah shops at. 5 max PP instead of 2. Wow.
>>
>>40439609
No, that's completely wrong. Satt doesn't have any seraph in her at all.
>>
>>40439578
Why not?
>>
>>40439609
Sattler is not seraph. At all. She's Cherbis/Echularum. Thread 45.
>>
>>40439611
Training will continue to increase it. She's passionate and has a good teacher. She could have it at 10 in a couple more months. A Boon would easily boost her to 20+ no problem. then she just needs to pick a field of magic and start training and we got a normal mage.

>>40439630
Yes she does. Hence why she is Issacs aunt. Remember how they're all related? Issacs dad was full Serapth, Satt was his half sister. Same Serapth parent.
>>
>>40439690
I just looked it up

She's half Cherbis (4 arms + orange glyphs) and half Echularum (clockwork robot thing) see >>33723999
>>
>>40439690
Hello retard, Sattler's Isaac's cousin.
>>
>>40439753
Not even that, I thought she was his second cousin once removed or some weird shit.
>>
>>40439690

>>
>>40439690
>Training will continue to increase it.
Can we stick her with that cool russian bear druid guy to train her if that happens?
I mean, why not?
>>
>>40439818
Great idea.
>>
>>40439690
She's seriously not Seraph. She said she was Issac's step-cousin, once removed. Though it's unclear how serious she ways.

And there's really no way we're going to get more mileage out of the boon giving it to Vik, compared to our other mages like Mor or Wolfy. They have a stronger base to work off of, and are far better at using what they have or get. And Reeber remains the best choice, giving him an extra dose of speed, power, and dog magic, along with his little pack, will keep him relevant and is great for locking down opponents with hundreds of pounds of hellhound.

Once Vik gets damn good, and we have a spare boon, it might be worth it. But that's a while off. She's essentially a non-combatant.
>>
>>40439572
>>40439690
No, she doesn't. She has very little potential at all, and she has no teacher. Her magical education consists of borrowing books and stuff from Rowan and teaching herself.

>Vikrama’s even taken up studying some magic herself, borrowing some tomes of Roman spellwork and crap from Rowan. She’s got a long way to go, especially since she doesn’t really have much natural talent at all, but she’s got a dream, so what can you say.
--Thread 100.5

A boon might help her, but because she doesn't have much to begin with, it won't have a very big effect.
>>
So glad we didn't get with Baron.

>>40439877
We're not powergaming here dude. We're Roleplaying.
>>
“Well, I guess I’ll settle for Sierra’s Forest or whatever,” you say. “I mean. Kind of obviously belongs to me anyway.”

“Obviously,” Vikrama agrees. “You must fill your domain, all of it, beginning with San Francisco, and then one day, the whole world!”

You snort. “Yeah, for sure. But definitely first I need to hit up all the stuff with my name on it.”

Vikrama points nearby the forest on the map. “Mt. Whitney, tallest peak in the Sierra Nevada,” she says. “I would bet actual money there’s a well there. Or a twin double well, even more special because of its geographic significance.”

“Uh. Right,” you say. “And it’d be cool to go there too, just because... you know. Kind of also just because.”

A kind of soft feeling emanates from Vikrama. “I know,” she says quietly. “Ro told me.”

You don’t like the feeling you feel right now, so you glance toward the door to give yourself something else to think about. “You mind if I kick back a little?” you ask.

Without a word, Vik hops over to the door and locks it before returning to her place. “You can change fast, right?” she asks.

“Pretty fast,” you say, briefly closing your eyes. You let your glamors flicker away, and relax so that you’re not constraining yourself to looking strictly human. You lay out on the floor around the side of the maps, kind of resting one of your horns on your claws to hang your head up. You keep your tail from flicking around too much so you don’t accidentally knock something over.

You toss a pillow underneath your elbow with your shadow, and look back at the maps. “So... after Fresno, we hit up Sierra Forest land, maybe the mountain, and then...”

“Vegas is right there,” Vikrama points out. “Let’s live recklessly.”

“Maybe we’ll save Vegas for the return trip,” you say. “Like. Right on the way home.”

“So long as we go there,” she says.
>>
>>40439900

You look up the West Coast. You’re pretty sure it’s where your mom had her whole domain going on. “So, we’ll do the Sierra Nevada. But then I kind of wanted to turn up, like this, you know, go up to Seattle and Vancouver kind of.”

“Meet up with Roger’s territory, make your neighbor status official?” Vikrama asks.

“Well, kind of, but mostly just for the Highway 1 coastal journey,” you say. “We can stop in Eureka and check out all the forests and stuff, head toward Portland and Seattle and yeah, maybe get to Canada.”

“You’re assuming big trees equals big magic?” she says.

“Well duh,” you reply. “What else makes them get that big?”

“I think it’s the other way around,” she says.

You give it some thought. “Maybe it’s just one of those vicious cycles.”

“Maybe,” she allows.

You laugh at her intellectualness. “You’re really getting into this whole magic thing,” you say.

“But of course,” she says, focusing all her attention between her hands and curving them around an invisible ball. A pulsating, flickering tangle of light-threads glow into being in the air before her. The light’s a touch brighter and bluer than the lamp shining nearby, causing Vik’s hands to cast shadows. “Behold, the power of Vikrama the Great, witch-magi of the East!” (Vikrama: 4/5 PP)

Moriah is doing okay for herself as is.

Besides, she'll be there too and this will be a topic we'll discuss with everybody there. Also, Moriahs immortal, which means she'll be around for a lot longer than Vik. Mori will get a boon eventually.
>>
>>40440371
>Moriahs immortal
Who wants to tell him?
>>
>>40440256
I think it's just joking around with Vikrama, we certainly shouldn't put her on the short list for Boons. Not when we have Reeber, Wolfy, Moriah, Ranthix, and Harvey as candidates. And there really isn't anything more in character than giving it to our eternally loyal dog.

>>40440304
She's a non-combatant, Sierra goes into combat situations pretty often and probably wants her Landwell stuff to go towards something helpful, that helps keep her alive when the chips are down. Vik should do everything possible to stay at a safe distance from these fights.

>>40440371
And there would still be more overall benefit if Mor got it compared to Vik.

>>40440692
Still not sure if a non sentient could get that boon.

But maybe a seperate boon to make Reeber into a sort of extra power pseudo summon? Make him summonable and stronger than he is, as well as some sort of mental command mind link. Makes total sense given how landmasters are so tied to nature and He's just an animal.
>>
>>40440708
Belphegorans are already really humanlike and our mom was half belph. They're pretty much just monochrome elves and belph heritage makes it easier for a demon to disguise as a human, apparently if I'm not misremembering/misinterpreting the stuff that was said about it a long time ago in the quest.
>>
>>40440758
Not sure why you think one couldn't. Hugo had some kind of super-ram with. That thing probably had a boon.
>>
>>40440692
He doesn't need it, he's already one of the more clever members of the cast in his own dog way. The buffs he'll hopefully get to his senses will be damn handy, and he'll still be excellent at solving whatever problems get in his way.

>>40440758
I don't have any doubts in my mind that we can give Reeber a Boon, how do you think Goat-Landmaster dude with the giant goat got it so huge? And there's been no indication that Reeber couldn't be a target.
>>
>>40440324
Moriah is a spooky choice to boon given that she literally radiates death magic, I don't know how versatile the charm that keeps that in check is in terms of sudden boosts.

No it wasn't. We specified that non-summoned animals were barred from the duel and he kept the ram out of it just like we kept Reeber out of it. It was a real animal companion.
>>
>>40440864
I still think boosts for sentients and boosts for animals are different in terms of landmastery stuff.
>>
>>40440869
No it wasn't. He was hanging out with it beforehand, it was carrying a pile of his stuff, he said she was loyal, and he didn't involve it in the fight when we specified that non-summoned animals should be left out of it.

He did summon a Stone Ram later, but that was a separate issue.

>>40440911
Where are you getting that from? There hasn't been any indication that Boons are restricted like that.

He had a real ram, he waved it off when we specified no real animals for the duel.

Then he summoned a stone ram.

Seems more natural, what with Landmaster shit pretty much focusing on nature and animals. Sentient beings seem separate from that.

“You’re more powerful than the last time you showed off,” you say.

“I’ve been training strength-building style,” says Vikrama, continuing the flare of light. “The more I use it, the more I’m convinced magic is just another muscle.”

“Well it’s paying off,” you say. “You’re like. A couple times stronger than the average joe.”

“Not many times?” she asks, sounding disappointed.

“You’re getting there,” you say. “You’re not doing half bad for not even knowing magic existed a few months ago.”

“It sounds like you’re afraid I’m going to catch up,” she says playfully. “Darling, don’t worry. I’ll love you however much raw arcane might I can lord over you.”

“Pfft. Oh yeah?” you ask, smirking sharply. “Check this out.” You lift a claw before you, and flex your fingers, converting your will directly into light energy. White fire curls and explodes above your palm, swelling with its silent burning inferno until the blazing sphere of cold fire is as big as a bowling ball, tendrils of flame licking upward into nothing.

Your light eclipses Vikrama’s, as well as the lamp’s, and puts uncomfortable lumen pressure on your shadow. You ignore the discomofort and start waving around your shadow as it’s casted by the light, hopefully making you seem more impressive than you really are. “Behold and cower, for I am Sierra, hellborn Terran rift lord ninja shadow diploma wrangler!” you call out in most menacing tones, chomping your sharp teeth as if in the flesh of your enemies.

“You are too cute,” Vikrama says, giggling.

You scowl. “Whatever. You’re just jealous.” You get an idea. “But you’d be less jealous if I totally pumped you up with landwell magic, I bet. You’d wind up like Rowan.”

“Athlete and scholar?” she asks.

“Uh. Wings and halo?”

“Likely,” she says wisely.

“But... you might have to fight Reeber for the next one though. He called dibs and he's got friendship seniority,” you warn her.
>>
>>40441163

“Oh come now darling. The dog can't come first. It simply isn’t done,” she says, puffing out her cheeks in anger.

“He’s family,” you say. “And he does dangerous stuff with me. Gotta watch his back.”

Vikrama sighs. “I suppose you’re the landmaster,” she says, surrendering.

“Yes,” you say maniacally. “I am landmas-star! Run cowards!”

--

A polite knock sends you and Vikrama scrambling, except for when you hear who it is.

“You guys in there?”

Rowan. Peace returns.

“Come in, but make it quick, I’m indecent,” you shout, brushing your hair out of your eyes with the back of your hand. “Oh. Uh. Wait. What’s the password?”

“Sierra, you goober,” Ro says.

“Only our Rowan would use the word ‘goober’ in all seriousness,” Vikrama comments.

“I concur. Open the gates,” you say.

Vikrama allows Rowan entrance, and locks the door behind her as soon as she slips in.

As soon as the doors shut, Rowan sees you in your utmost comfort and decides to also lose her glamors, the volumptious featheriness of her wings forcing Vikrama to flee to the refuge of her bed so it’s not too crowded.

“I brought the Oreos,” says Ro, unpacking her backpack and revealing not one, not two, but three boxes of cookies.

You snag one with your shadow and drag it into your claws for consumption. “Auughahaghagh,” you say, jamming cookies into your mouth.
>>
>>40441209

“You’ve awakened The Beast, trademark,” says Vikrama. “You’ve doomed us, you fool.”

Rowan stretches out her wings and sighs, easing backwards into a pillowy rest. “Sierra’s part cookie monster. I thought you knew,” she says. She takes a moment to look over your clever drawings and doodles over the map of the US, noting your travel plans. “That’s about what I thought,” she says with a nod. “So who’s coming, anyway? You, me, her, of course.”

“The real question is if we should bring Baron,” Vikrama says, thoughtfully. “Would he even want to come on our magic adventure dream quest?”

“That should be his decision,” says Rowan. “It might be a little awkward for him if he’s the only guy on a multi-week journey, though.”

“If Moriah’s coming too, that already brings us up to four,” says Vikrama. “If we have any more than six, we’ll need two cars.”

“Six?” asks Ro. “Who else would possibly come?”

You finish your Oreo. Who else could come?

I almost want to drag Baron along because I know firsthand just how foul the experience would be for him. Groups of girls on things like this do not for a pleasant trip make. Especially when one of them goes and kills deer with her bare hands.

Speaking of killing things, should we discuss hunting arrangements to curb Sierra's bloodlust? Baron or Vikrama might make good bloodsacks in a pinch, but I suspect that if they go missing on this trip, things would get super awkward.

“I think there’s two plans here,” you say.

“Wow, that many?” Rowan asks, amazed.

“Shut up. Two plans. Both plans involve Reeber, since he’d get mad if I left him behind after I promised.”

“Your ‘emotional support animal’ slash murder attack hound,” Vikrama summarizes.

Rowan chuckles. “That’s family you’re badmouthing. You think Sierra’s the one who worries about feeding him?”

“I do too worry about feeding him,” you argue. “You and Cassandra just... you know, beat me to it a lot.”

“And Dad’s the one who takes him out on walks?” Ro asks.

“Well that’s Dad – uh, Isaac for you,” you say. “He just wants the extra muscle to maul the dudes who get in his way. And whatever, stop interrupting me. The first plan is just girls – maybe Xanissil too if she’s not busy, she’d love coming out and seeing the country.”

“And plan two?” asks Vikrama.

“Plan two is everybody from plan one, but then maybe we start thinking about Baron. And if Baron wanted to come, I guess maybe we’d need to bring another guy, and there’s... uh. Xathix. And... also... you know, maybe another guy we could get, I suppose.” Because that would be kind of hot. “Or not,” you say, feeling kind of self conscious suddenly.

Rowan laughs. “You put a lot of thought into this. Which plan do you like?”

All things considered, though it might be fun to have Baron and Xathix and probably most importantly Wolfgang along, you don’t really want to risk it if Wolf can’t come. And he’s busy with lawyer job stuff. So... maybe not worth it. Plus the idea of all that might kind of ruin your preconceived idea of what you were thinking about when you first envisioned the road trip to end all road trips.

“Well... I think plan one is more in line with my initial vision of road tripping,” you say.

“Then let’s do that,” says Rowan. “I think it’s safe to say that while we’re all shareholders, you’ve got the majority stake.”

“I’m all for it,” says Vikrama. “Except... when you say Xanissil, do you mean your demon magic teacher?"

“She’s cool,” Rowan affirms. “If you’re friends with Sierra you’ll be friends with her. She’s refined. Sort of.”

“The plot thickens,” Vikrama replies, moving to lay down on her stomach.

“Okay,” Rowan says, trying to internalize the decisions thus far, “so we’ll execute a fishhook maneuver to Fresno and head back to the coast, going north. Hey, we can visit Stanford on our way down, actually – cool.”

“Typical Stanford girls,” you say, not really knowing whether or not that’s a thing.

“Whatever,” says Rowan. “You could have come too if you wanted.”

“Yeah, no thanks, already saw how sports played out for you and Beatrice,” you say.

Rowan lets out a tired breath.

“Not cool, Sierra,” says Vikrama.

You sigh. “Ugh. Whatever, I didn’t mean it.”

“Don’t worry about it,” says Ro. She goes back to the map. “There’s a couple places I want to stop, if we’re headed this way....”

--

Another knock at the door, almost so soft it is inaudible. This time nobody panics.

“Moriah, you have to knock louder if you want to come in!” Vikrama shouts.

Everyone sits in silence for a moment.

A series of slightly more firm knocks sound at the door.
>>
>>40442576

This time, you’re in position to reach out with your foot and clumsily toe open the lock with your claws. “We’re all naked and stuff, so get in quick,” you warn her.

Rowan laughs and snorts inexpertly. She stops laughing immediately, but not before you and Vikrama start laughing at her for the lapse.

Moriah inches into Vikrama’s room and silently closes the door behind her. It takes some grade A shuffling, but within a minute, everybody has (almost) adequate space to sit.

Moriah settles on Vikrama’s bed beside Vik herself, sitting indian style, her clunky combat boots discarded by the door. “What’s going on?” she asks.

Now that you have a chance to look at her, you see she looks a little stiff – she sports a couple bruises and has a split lip. Although you’re not really sure how much is real damage, given that she doesn’t actually have lips, nor skin that might bruise. But its telling that her arcane aura is fatigued. She must have been throwing around some serious magic. (Mori: 9/24 PP)

Rowan gives her the low down on your slick plans, either not noticing or choosing not to mention the other stuff.

Mori absorbs the whole plan without speaking, and nods at the conclusion. “I’m coming with you,” she says simply.

>Good to have you aboard. Yeah. So. Uh. You're okay if we take your car, right?
