You are Giles, Master Thief, lover extraordinaire, and professional fighter.

Your job has taken another interesting turn, as you’ve now gone from escort to spymaster.

It’s been roughly 2 days since you left Yellowvale on horseback.

As the weather soured, you turned to your faithful assistant for idea on shelter. On her advice you headed to an abandoned mine that supposedly spans a good portion of the country.

Once there, you learned the hard way the Marcy is deathly afraid of caves and tight spaces. You did manage to coax her in, but it cost you a hand.

When you decided to take a little detour for work, you learned that an enemy of yours may be your father’s biological son…

The fires of war rise and dance on the whim of a Devil.
Will you extinguish them before they spread, or let them grow into a conflagration to consume the world?

After roughly 8 hours of straight walking, the four of you finally reach the exit of the mine.

It’s been a quiet 8 hours. Marcy has been too busy keeping her fears down and trying to crush your hand, you’ve been lost in your own thoughts, and Kuma has been… Kuma. You’re also pretty sure that Selene slept most of the way.

“The sky…” Marcy says. A smile slowly forms on her face, widening and brightening until she looks like the happiest person on the planet.
“We made it” You say.

“We made it!” She echoes, turning and kissing Selene on the cheek before hugging the two of you with her free hand.
“I did say we would” You say. “Did you not believe me?”

Marcy sniffs. “Doesn’t matter. What matters is that we can see the sky and we’re not dead” She says.

“Marcy… are you crying?” You ask.
“No!” She says. “I’m just… so happy that it’s leaking out of my eyes”
“That’s called crying” You say.
“You say it your way, I’ll say it mine” She says.

Selene relinquishes her grip on you and clings onto Marcy. “It’s okay mama, I was scared too”
“You were?” Marcy asks, letting go of your hand to free up both of hers.
“Yeah!” Selene says. “But papa was there so I didn’t have to scared of the dark”

You shake your hand as blood painfully returns to your fingers and leave the girls to their talk, walking over to Kuma who is leading the horses out of the mine.

“Where are we headed now?” You ask.
“West” She says. “The camp is not far. Maybe a few hours on horseback if you ride fast”
“When can I expect that info on General Pitre?” You ask.
“Soon. I’ll send the bird off now, if you’ll take these” She says, handing you the reins for the two horses.

“Do so” You say, taking the reins from her.

Kuma stands off to the side and whistles. After a few moments, a small blackbird flies down onto her hand. She then scrawls something on a small piece of paper and attaches it to the bird’s leg, before releasing it again.

>[1/2]
>>
“It’s done” She says. “Another bird should arrive in an hour with the information you requested”
“A little bird like that is going to carry everything you have on General Pitre?” You ask.
“No, that’s my bird. Its purpose is carrying small messages like notices and requests. The information will be coming by something larger” She says.
“Like what?” You ask.

Kuma shrugs. “Depends on how much we have for it to carry” She says.

So you’ll be stuck here for a little while…

The mine let you out in a fairly wooded area, and above you can see that it’s probably around mid-afternoon. That leaves you plenty of time to wait for Kuma’s intel, read it, and head off to the camp before nightfall.

But you could always just leave now…

You shrug and go into your cloak for some of the rations Marcy picked up in Yellowvale. You didn’t really get a chance to eat or rest in the mine, mostly because you figured Marcy would faint if you even suggested stopping.

“Lunch anyone?” You ask.
Selene perks up and wriggles away from Marcy. “Lunch!” She says.
Marcy scratches her head. “I guess I am pretty hungry” She says.
“Lunch it is, then” You say

Selene bounces in anticipation as you begin doling out food…

>[1/2]
>>
The hour passes in the blink of an eye as you chat with Marcy and Selene. Before you know it, a large owl comes down and lands on Kuma’s arm.

Kuma unties a fair-sized scroll from its leg, and hands it to you. “There, this is what you requested”
“Thank you” You say.

You unroll the scroll and begin reading…

The info is pretty bare-bones. It’s nothing personal, more like a status sheet. According to this, Johann Pitre the second has a wife, but no kids. He’s been in the army since he was old enough to join.

His rise to the rank of general came from his ‘tactical prowess’ that lead to many victories in the war against Delemur ten years ago. He has long been a close acquaintance of the king’s, and many attribute his rise in ranks to that. Apparently he was even at Laura’s homecoming party.

There is no information on his parentage, beyond the fact that he is the King’s nephew…

There is much here that you can use. If he was friendly with the king, you may be able to get him around to your side yet, if you can prove to him that Roderick is the one responsible for Mercutius’s death…

You should leave as soon as possible if you want to make it to the camp by sundown. The question is, do you go alone?

You roll the scroll back up and turn to Kuma, who has been watching you read it. “Alright Kuma, saddle up” You say.
“Yes master” She says.
“Off to see your maybe-brother?” Marcy asks.
“Yeah” You say. “Sorry, but I think it’s best if only Kuma and I go”

“No problems, you two are the sneaky ones” She says, reaching out her hand. “Sword”
“What?” You ask.
“Give me my sword” She says. “If anything causes trouble around here I don’t wanna be fighting with sticks. And while you’re in there, give me a few practice swords”
“Why?” You ask.
“So I can show the kid some moves” She says. “Would you like that?”
“Yes” Selene says.

Marcy opens and closes her hands in a ‘gimme’ gesture, so you pull out her sword and a few practice swords from your cloak and hand them to her.

“Take care you two” You say.
“We will” Marcy says.

Kuma pulls a horse up beside you and lends you a hand getting up.

“Good luck papa! Good luck Kuma!” Selene says, as Kuma steers the horse through the woods towards your destination.

“What can you tell me about this place?” You ask.
“Not much, as I have yet to see it myself” She says. “But if it’s set up like most Laustian military camps, then getting in should not prove too difficult”

“Really?” You ask. “You’d think that a military camp would be pretty well guarded”
“They are. But patrols move in a predictable manner, and guard changes are frequent” She says.
“Any idea where we’ll find the general?” You ask.
“With any luck, he’ll be in his tent at the center of the camp” She says.

“And without any luck?” You ask.
Kuma thinks, then shrugs. “He could be anywhere. But our best option then would still be to wait in his tent” She says.

When you reach a road, Kuma urges the horse on faster.

I'm a little apprehensive about asking for family info, at this point. The way I see it, we have 3 possibilities: A) She was abandoned on the assassins' doorstep, B) She's the Master's daughter/grand-daughter, or C) (worst case scenario) Her parents are not just assassins, but assassins that Giles killed in the castle.

If the situation is C, then we might wanna hold off on bringing that up until MUCH later.

“So, I know that Selene is afraid of the dark, and Marcy is afraid of tight places” You say. “You have any fears I should know about?”
“Why do you ask?” She asks.
“Because I’d rather not be blindsided and end up spending 8 hours with my hand in a deathgrip again” You say.
“Understandable” Kuma says. “I have no fears that I know of. Though if I discover one, I will be sure to inform you”

“No fears at all?” You ask.
“None that come to mind” She says. “Is that strange?”
“A little” You say.

“Then may I ask what you’re afraid of?” She asks.

“Rats” You say.
“Rats?” She asks. “Huh…”
“That’s you reaction?” You ask.
“Sorry… I was expecting something more… more” She says.

“What’s wrong with being afraid of rats?” You ask.
“Nothing. I just thought that it was an odd thing for someone like yourself to be afraid of” She says. “If it’s not too bold, can I ask why?”

“Why I’m afraid of rats?” You ask.
Kuma nods.
“Because they eat people. I have some fond memories of the sheer volume of them that descended on the city after the Red Night in Tulia.” You say. “The rats got to the bodies before any sort of clean up could happen”

“That sounds… appetizing” She says.
“It absolutely was” You say. “There was a while where you couldn’t bloody well sit down without a rat thinking you were dead and trying to nibble on your toes”

“I’ve heard that Tulia is not so bad now. Where did all the rats go?” She asks.
“Their food supply dwindled” You say. “That, and they started paying people to cull the damn things. My friend used to make a few coins here and there by killing rats”
“And you didn’t?” She asks.
“Not a chance in hell” You say. “I steered clear of the bloody district for a while. I spent most of those days around the nobility”

“What did you do there?” She asks.
“I made a few coins taking their stuff and pawning it” You say. “It was more lucrative than killing rats”

>[1/2]

“There’s also cages” You say. “But that’s more discomfort than actual fear”
“I thought you were fairly adept at breaking out of places” She says.
“That doesn’t mean that I can’t dislike cages” You say. “They haven’t built one that can hold me yet, but that doesn’t mean that one will never exist”

“Should a prison like that ever exist, I will be there to set you free” Kuma says.
“Thanks” You say. “Really, thank you”
“It is my duty, Master” She says.

The rest of the ride passes quietly. Not the awkward silence from a few days ago, but more of a quiet contentment. Kuma seems to enjoy silence.

After about an hour’s ride, you see the flags and palisades of Pitre’s camp in the distance.

“There is it, master” Kuma says.
“Indeed” You reply. “Let’s get to work”

You and Kuma circle the camp, remaining hidden the whole way, looking for entry points.

After going full circle, you realize that the whole damn thing is one big entry point. The walls are all climbable, and the actual entryways look easy enough to get in through.

Inside you see soldiers milling about on patrols or other duties. Some are training, some are eating, some are on watch.

At the centre of the camp you see a tent that stands taller than all the others, which you assume belongs to the general himself.

Now… how to go about this.

“Well then, in we go” You say.

You tie your horse to a tree in the woods that border the camp, and make your way down to the wall.

Up, and over you go. It’s an easy climb. The big stakes used to make it are old and worn, but with a few good places to put your foot.

Once inside, you quickly dart into cover, along with Kuma. Then you stow your hat in your cloak and fold it into itself, and walk right through the base.

They must be pretty used to visitors, because no one even questions your presence. They must figure that if you could get past the front gate, you must belong here.

You sneak into the General’s tent through the back. There are guards at the front, but it is still a tent…

General Pitre is, unfortunately, not present. You might as well-

“Well, if he’s not here” You say sitting in the chair behind the desk in the center of the room. “We might as well make ourselves at home”

“Are you certain?” Kuma asks. “We should probably hide”
“We could” You say. “We could also snoop about. Even if we have to leave here with our tails between our legs, we wouldn't leave empty handed”

“And if he returns while you’re snooping? I doubt he’ll be very personable then” Kuma says.

“Alright, fine. Have it your way” You say, scanning the room for possible hiding places. There are a few that show promise, but you decide to hide behind a small cabinet with Kuma.

From there you can be easily seen when you reveal yourself, but you’ll be hidden until you choose to do so.

And there you wait…

And wait…

And wait…

Fuck, he didn’t like… nod off for the night, did he? That would make this whole thing quite awkward…
Hang on, you hear voices approaching the room. Two men.

“That will be all Brett. I will call on you again in the morning to finalize” One of them says.
“I will be waiting” ‘Brett’ says.

One of the two men enters the tent. “Bloody asskissers” He says. “I wonder what it would take to fire all of them and replace them with people that actually worked for their positions”

The man walks over to the desk and sits down, pulling out and going over some papers.

You peek out from behind the cabinet. Holy shit. This guy is the spitting image of your father... only younger, and less gray...

That certainly ticked the King of Harth off, if just the HEAD of his son wasn't enough.

Regardless of whether or not he's 'supposed to win', there seem to be many people who'd rather go down swinging.

“I am” You say.
“That is a dangerous statement indeed” He says. “There are men on both sides of this war who would kill you where you stand for it”

“Are you not one of them?” You ask.

He is quiet for a second, his face unreadable. “Do you have any proof of this?” He asks.
“The fact that fate is changing?” You ask.
“Yes” He says. “Other than the younger princess’s continued existence, there are no other signs of Fate being thrown off”

“It almost sounds like you want it thrown off” You say.

He closes his eyes. “I have seen the future” He says. “In my own dreams”
“Did you not like what you saw?” You ask.
“What I saw was victory, and vengeance” He says. “It was long, it was bloody, but in the end Roderick emerged the victor”

“Vengeance for whom?” you ask.
“For me” He says. “You claim to be able to change fate, I might as well get you to prove it”
“How?” You ask.
“In my dream, my wife dies in the very first real battle of this war. Harth’s armies are marching towards Fort Barrowlen as we speak, and it happens there” He says. “After that I destroy Harth, one crushing victory after another. With naught but revenge on my mind”

“You want me to save your wife” You say.
“It is in your best interests and mine” He says. “If she survives the siege of Barrowlen, I will consider turning my coat”

You consider this. Barrowlen is quite a ways from here. If Harth’s armies are already on their way, you could never beat them there even if you pushed the fastest horse in the world to death…

A bird though… If you sent a message back to them convincing them to avoid laying siege to Barrowlen… That might be doable.

Kuma, time to put our boys to work.

“You have a deal” You say, extending your hand.
“I was hoping you’d agree” He says, accepting your handshake.

He has the same deathgrip that his father does…

“War is a bloody business. I’m just doing my part to make it less so” You say.
“We’ll see” He says. “You still have to do your part”

“And I will” You say.
“Good” He says. “Now get out of my tent. I have work to do that you’ve put me off of for too long”
“We both have work to do” You say. “Come along Kuma”

Kuma comes out from behind the cabinet and follows you out of the tent. The look on Johann’s face is absolutely priceless.

“It goes without saying that I never saw you if you get caught on your way out” He says.
“Like your security could catch me” You reply, slipping underneath the side of his tent and leaving.

“How do you intend to save his wife?” Kuma asks.
“We’ll talk about that later” You say.
“Do you think he’ll hold to his bargain?” She asks.
“He might” You say. “Even if he doesn’t, fate’s course will have changed. He will no longer burn a swath of vengeance across Harth if there is nothing to avenge”
“Sound logic” She says.
“Thank you” You say. “I believe it was mentioned that the brotherhood had a fateseer… and Harth has more than one”
“That is true” Kuma says. “What of it?”

“Perhaps I am going about this the wrong way” You say. “Instead of trying to beat Roderick, I should be trying to beat fate”
“I’m not sure I follow” She says.

“What I’m trying to say is: I want a report of all the things both your fateseers and Harth’s fateseers have seen” You say. “I am going to change it all”

That's all for tonight, I hope you guys still enjoy reading this as much as I enjoy writing it!

Next thread will be sometime during the week. I can't give an exact day because I have no idea when I'll have the free time.

As always I'll be sticking around for question/suggestion time!
