Following after Sarah, you are led to a small campfire, one of many dotting the area that you are in. Sarah nods at a few people who are finishing up their food on the other side of the fire before taking a seat, you and Cath following. You take a seat next to Sarah and Cath next to you on top of a log on the ground, the three of you digging into your food before it goes cold.

There’s mostly silence while you eat except for the crackling of the flames and the scrape of your utensils on the flimsy plates you were handed, but eventually Sarah breaks the silence.

“So did you find anything interesting when you were looking around?” she asks, setting down her tray of food and picking up her cup.

Well seeing as how you spent most of the afternoon looking through the school you decide to just go down the list of what you found and describe everything.

You start your tale with the first thing that you found, which were all of the creepy shrines in the basement. You describe the dim lighting and the strange placement of items around the pictures of the rebel’s former leader, along with what appeared to be some blood at certain spots. Sarah seemingly draws in upon herself as you say this, leaning a little closer to the fire.

“Well that sounds thoroughly creepy,” she says to you, shaking her head and taking a sip of her drink, “Almost enough to make a girl want something alcoholic to forget.”

That reminds you of the next thing you found and you reach into your pack and hold out a bottle of the alcohol you found.

“We found a bunch next to the shrines,” you say, letting Sarah take it as Cath grunts in mild surprise, “Nem and Morrigan are drinking some right now, you can have some if you want.”

Sarah peers at the bottle through the firelight and shakes her head before handing it back. “Thanks Billy,” she says with a smile, “But if that’s what I think it is then I think we should wait until we get back home before we crack it open.”

You nod, simply setting it back into your pack as you then describe the slow walk down the dimly lit basement to the office and the papers that Morrigan found. You recite the message as best you can, causing both Sarah and Cath to frown a little.

“More creepiness,” she says, “If someone was supplying these guys…that could mean there are more somewhere else.”

You nod and hear Cath grunt again in affirmation.

“Anything else?” asks Sarah.

“Found some guns,” you say, “Sold them to Koko since they weren’t very good.”

“Probably your best option,” she says, turning back to the fire as she finishes off her cup of milk, “No use carrying them back if you aren’t going to use them.”

You nod, turning back to the fire as the sun starts to go under the horizon. You feel Cath shift a little closer to you as the three of you sit by the heat of the burning wood.

With nothing left to say you remain quiet, watching the fire with the other two. Cath doesn’t seem to mind so much, but you see Sarah look over at you a few times, her mouth almost opening, but she doesn’t say anything.

As minutes pass in silence broken only by the crackle of wood and the dull noise of people around you, you feel Cath scoot a little closer to you, her shoulder brushing against yours briefly before she sits upright once more. As the fire starts to die down a little, Sarah decides to stand up, causing you to look over to her.

“I’m going to go get some more wood for the fire,” she says, walking off with a brief wave of her hand. You nod, turning back towards the warmth of the flames before you hear someone coming up to you. Turning you expect to see Sarah, but instead it’s another woman, one that you don’t recognize, but Cath seems to.

“Hi,” she says softly, the clothes she’s wearing doing little to disguise the fact that like Cath and Bellona, she has a set of rather large breasts, “Do you mind if I sit with you for a few minutes?”

You shake your head, wondering why she’s asking if she can sit with you.

The woman takes a seat across the small fire from you, her eyes on you until Cath speaks up.

“Aren’t afraid?” she asks quietly, her voice barely audible over the sound of the flames and surrounding bustle, but it still carries to the girl.

“No,” says the girl her voice quavering a little, “At least not of him. He was with you when you rescued us, right?”

Cath nods her head, the woman giving a little bit of a smile.

“Yeah,” she says, “by the door so he wouldn’t scare the others. I know some of them are still terrified, but I want to remember that not all men are like the ones who put me in that room.”

Cath nods, turning to look at you again with a ghost of a smile and pats your shoulder.

The conversation is a little over your head, but you think the girl was up in the rooms the other lady brought you to.

Memories of the time you were taken from the compound float through your head. How the ride in the truck was quiet, most of the women in the back seemingly wanted you gone while a few others looked like they actively hated you for some reason. If the situations were similar…that would mean this lady might be forcing herself to be near you.

“Should you be here?” you ask softly, still not very used to speaking to anyone not from MMS, but you’ve been getting better and this seems important, “The others…when the army came to The Compound and took us away didn’t want to be near me. If it was bad…”

You stop, your words not quite sufficient enough to get all the ideas out of your head, but the woman across the campfire merely smiles at you.

“I’m…ok,” she says as she watches you, “The fact that you even asked that means more than you know.”

You turn to Cath, confused, but she simply smiles and nods to you.

You turn back to the woman, who smiles a little more. “What’s your name?” she asks you.

“William…” you say back, “or Billy.”

“Well Billy,” says the woman as she stands upright, “Thanks for helping to rescue me and for helping me remember there are good men out there.”

You nod to her once more as she waves her hand at you, going back off towards a group of women that had gathered nearby, all of them moving off towards another campfire while they talk with the one that sat next to you.

You turn to Cath, who just gives you another pat on the shoulder as Sarah comes up from behind you.

“Who was that?” she asks, setting down a stack of wood and putting some of it on the fire.

“Marie,” Cath says quietly, “wanted to see Will.”

Sarah turns to look at you, a bit of surprise on her face. “Really,” she asks, her eyes glancing back towards Cath, “What for?”

“Wanted to remember the good,” Cath says, her voice picking up a hint of emotion, “He helped.”

Sarah looks at you for another few seconds and then smiles and shakes her head. “I guess I underestimated you Will,” she says, taking her seat once more, “I didn’t think you had it in you.”

You almost open your mouth and ask what she didn’t think you had in you, but decide against it.

As you’re about to turn back to the fire, you hear a noise off in the distance, it sounds like someone yelling, though neither Cath or Sarah seem too disturbed by it.

As the yelling continues across the way, you turn to Sarah and Cath, both of whom are apparently unconcerned about it.

“Shouldn’t we go check?” you ask, causing both of them to look up at you.

“Go check on what?” asks Sarah.

“The yelling,” you say. Yelling in your experience is never a good thing and so you are a bit concerned about it.

Sarah pauses and looks over to the general direction of the yelling before shaking her head.

“It doesn’t sound too bad,” she says, “Mars is on duty to keep these people calm anyway. You can go check if you want, just don’t get into any trouble if you can help it.”

You nod, turning to grab your gear as Cath pulls away from you a bit to give you room to move. You look at her questioningly and she just shakes her head, indicating that she’s going to stay here. With a shrug you decide to head out, your rifle slung and accessible, but on safe and pointed down and away from everybody.

It isn’t very hard to find the source of the yelling, you simply have to make your way around some campfires and a few small tents or shanties before you find the source of the noise.

As it turns out, it’s Bellona, somehow rather drunk and red faced as she yells at what appears to be a pair of off duty Mars soldiers, at least judging by their uniforms and relative lack of weapons, only a pistol for each of them while Bellona is similarly armed, her LMG nowhere to be seen. You manage to catch the last of her rant.

“…on’t want to spend any time with a pair of limp wristed dirty faggots who probably couldn’t even keep it up long enough to please each other, never mind the fact that I wouldn’t touch either of you with a twenty foot pole!”

As Bellona pauses in her tirade you can see that he two men are a little drunk themselves and look a little upset, though you aren’t sure how drunk. They also appear to be a little grumpy after being yelled at by Bellona.

Seeing as how you don’t know what’s going on or why Bellona is yelling at the two men, you decide it would be best to ask what is going on before doing anything.

“Hey!” you say, raising your voice loud enough that you draw everyone’s attention, “What’s going on?”

There’s a pause as all three of them turn towards you, clearly upset that somebody was interrupting their little spectacle. However, Bellona’s face goes from pissed off to nearly ecstatic the second that she sees you.

“Will!” she says, immediately running up to you and wrapping her arms around your neck while rubbing her face against yours, “I was looking for you.”

You blink, confused by what she’s doing, though you look back to the two men. One of them seems a little more upset at the moment than the other and takes a step towards you, but his friend grabs his arm and pulls him back, shaking his head and whispering something as he points at you. His friend looks down then and frowns, before grunting and turning away, trying to stalk away but mostly wobbling instead.

“You could’ve just told us you had a boyfriend already lady!” calls the second one before turning back to follow his friend.

You’re briefly tempted by Bellona’s mention of blankets though not so much the bed, before you remember what Morrigan said to you. Not to sleep with Bellona, though she never did tell you why. So you shake your head no.

“I can’t,” you say, “Morrigan said I wasn’t allowed to do that with you.”

At this Bellona’s face frowns at you, though it doesn’t seem to be angrily, as she puffs up her cheeks and makes an upset sound.

While Bellona does have a few points that you aren’t sure how to argue against, one word keeps coming up that you aren’t sure of.

You find yourself wavering a little bit in the face of Bellona’s pleading.

You could sleep on the floor and let her sleep on the bed, but it’s dark and there aren’t enough people nearby, you don’t quite feel safe either. So slightly regretfully since Bellona seems to really like this place, you shake your head.

From there on the walk is mostly silent except for the sound of your feet, at least until you make it back to the campground. There a few people are still up and about at least for the moment and you manage to find the campfire you are looking for without too much trouble. There you find Sarah awake, watching the fire as Cath, Nem and Morrigan are all asleep next to it.

She looks up at you as you approach. “There you are,” she says quietly, “We weren’t sure where you wandered off to.”

“Will was just making sure me and my stuff got back here safely,” says Bellona, whose alcoholic buzz seems to have worn off by now, “We’re fine.”

You nod, not having anything to say that would contradict what Bellona said.

“Well get some sleep then,” says Sarah, “Cath has mid watch and Nem is apparently going to wake up in the morning and take morning.”

You and Bell nod, settling in for the night. You realize that you don’t have a blanket to sleep under, at least until Bell hands you one from her pack.

“Here,” she says, “I couldn’t leave all those nice ones behind.”

You nod at her in thanks, smiling a little bit which causes her to smile in return. After that you settle in to sleep to the sound of the crackling fire and the soft murmur of people and crickets.
