>In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only... GOVERNMENT!
>You are John Erlwise Shabti, an imperial noble who was granted governorship over the planet Valencia. From your capital city, Valencia Prime, you over see the development of your planet
>In the last thread, we have gone to a party hosted by the Helvera family. At the party, Fausta Helvera is seeking a suitor to take up her hand.
>We scoped out the competition and found out everyone else was nervous... which gave us an edge. We have a +20 to social rolls at the party and can reroll our lowest roll and take the higher of the two.
>Months since founding: 28
>Months in a year: 13
>Number of cities: 4
>Number of Regiments: 15 PDF, 4 Krieg, 2 Skitarii
>Planet's Population: 34,746,212
>Months until Railway is finished: 4
You arrive at the party, wearing your finest suit. Flanking you is Lord General Frederick in his dress uniform, Magos Helena wearing an ornate version of her usual tech priest robes, white with a golden trim rather than the usual red and white, and Confessor Jacobim wearing... well, the usual Ecclesiarchical robes, but those always look fancy. The ball room of the Helvera family is impossibly ornate, with 50 feet tall statues and even bigger paintings. The place is packed with nobles, dignitaries, generals, and all other sorts of high end imperial socialites. Fausta is supposed to be meeting with her suitors one-on-one later during the party, so you have some time to mingle.
>What would we like to do before meeting Fausta?
>>
>>40584935
Mingle, maybe try to drum up interest in financial backing in our little colony. But above all make friends and acquaintances you can use later to help your position.

You decide that it is in the best business interests of Valencia that you try and attract some financial backers to the planet. Even if you don't end up with Fausta's hand, you can always help your planet in other ways. As such, you set off to go mingle. Though, you need to decide what to do with your entourage.
>Who do you wish to accompany you in seeking business ventures and who would you like to go off into the party on their own accord?
>>
>>40584935
If there are lots of important people here, perhaps we can get some positive support for Valencia. For example, we can offer to sell Imperial Guard generals or Rogue Traders weapons and equipment, or perhaps we could secure some investment from nobles so that we can expand our industries faster. This is a great time to make some important allies.
>>
>>40585172
Frederick can go mingle with some other military types to see what he can learn.

The Magos can accompany us as a technical/industry expert for possible business negotiations.

The Confessor can do what he thinks is best, I guess?
>>
>>40585172
Helena comes with us, Frederick can stick with us or mingle same with jacobim.
>>
>>40585270

This sounds good to me. It may also help us keep an eye on Helena and ensure she doesn't make any inadvertent faux-paus at this high a gathering of nobility.

You tell Frederick and Jacobim they may go mingle at the party. Jacobim jumps at the opportunity, while Frederick merely nods his head. "If you wish sir. However, don't hesitate to vox if you need me." He says before making a beeline for a gathering of men in military uniform. You tell Helena to come with you.
Unlike many members of the Mechanicus, Helena has very few visible or inhuman augmentations. Her one eye is cybernetic, but this is usual for all imperial citizens. Both of her hands are mechanical but are of a high degree of sophistication, working and acting the same as human hands save only for their metallic coloring. The only thing off putting about her are her legs, having been replaced by five spider like ones she uses to move. Luckily, Helena keeps these hidden under her robes most of the time, the only sign they are there by the sound they make as she walks. Such minimal augmentations are evidently common for mechanicus members who interact diplomatically with people not of the machine cult, as Helena has told you in the past. With her at your side, you're sure her good social graces can help you secure a business agreement.
>1d100+20 for our mingling. Helena gives us a second reroll, besides the one we gained from our self confidence. The first reroll cannot be rerolled by the second.
>>
Rolled 53 + 20 (1d100 + 20)

>>40585479
didn't our research net us unlimited rerolls?
>>

Alright! Let's make some money!

>>40585505
I think it's one reroll per encounter (two here), for an infinite number of social encounters.
>>

>>40585479
Nice details on Helena! Now let's see what we can do.
>>40585505

Yeah, it would be silly if we just got to keep rolling as long as we wanted.

>Rolls average to 92, a success.
It seems your reputation preceded you at this event, or at least your planet's. Many a rogue trader heard from Roman Diaz about your planet's ceramite and coolant mines, which was then passed on further to many planetary governors and nobles. Within an hour, you already have five trade offers, within the next, thirteen. It's going to be hard deciding which to choose, but Helena promises she will look over the data to determine the optimal trades.
Finally, a chime plays through the ball room, an announcement. "Will all suitors please line up over in guest room secundus please." The voice says, the entire party nearly clearing out as men head off, you following. It is a mass of people, you getting knocked this way and that by the crowd. When you finally get in line, you find yourself near the back. It is going to be a long wait.
>Should we wait it out or try and get farther in line?
>>
>>40586270
wait it out, keep making deals
>>
>>40586270
>>40586351
Waiting it out seems ok. Our chances of success here aren't super high as it is, so making the most of the situation by meeting new people and making deals seems to be the smartest thing to do.

Trying to get ahead in line would also piss off just about everyone we've met so far. Don't you hate it when people do that?
>>
>>40586270
>Wait it out
>>
>>40586270

If we can subtly try to edge ourself forward I say go for it.

If, on the other hand, if it is impossible to be discreet, I'd vote for waiting it out. Getting called out for cheating or cutting not only diminishes our standing in the eyes of Fausta, but risks undermining our fledgling trade deals. If I had just agreed to a business deal with someone, and then witnessed them blatantly cheat, it would certainly undermine my confidence in the relationship.

You decide that it is best to play it safe and wait it out. It may be annoying to wait but it is better than getting caught and being mistrusted.
However, as you discover, you might not have to wait as long as you expected. Several suitors are barely inside the Helvera throne room, where Fausta is meeting them, for more than a few seconds before leaving. A few last more than a minute. Maybe 1% of them last 3 to 5 minutes and those ones leave with large smiles on their faces. Before you know it, it is your turn. You walk into the throne room, awed at the hundred foot high room, frescos of the Emperor's greatest heroes decorating the roof. Fausta lies seated on the throne, a bored look to her face. Her skin is pale, as if it had never seen natural sunlight, and she has platinum blonde hair. She is the very picture of beauty, with perfect skin and the right amount of make up to accentuate her features. As you approach, she looks up from her boredom.
"And who the hell are you?" She says in a rather uncouth tone.
>Our response? Anything wrong said here could risk getting us thrown out so consider our words carefully.
>>
>>40586652

She seems bored, so we really need to do something to stand out. I'd suggest replying with something along the lines of:

"Someone who is equally tired of this whole affair. I would guess everyone else you've seen has given you some long string of titles or ancestry in regards to that question. I don't want to play such games. My name is John Erlwise Shabti, governor of Valencia, and I'm the suitor who will win your heart."
>>
>>40586803
This has promise but needs work.
maybe replace the last part of the last line with
"And I'm the person who will at least keep you entertained, if not happy."
>>
>>40586803
>>40586860
Supporting this with the subsequent change. It doesn't seem like shes in the mood for romance.
>>
>>40586860

That's fine by me. I wasn't heavily wedded to the original wording by any means and I think the change is an improvement. I might change the word "happy" to "coddled" however. We shouldn't tell her she will be unhappy with us, but we can get her out of her "guilded-prison" potentially.
>>
>>40586652
"My lady, my name is John Erlwise Shabti, humble planetary governor of Valencia. May I ask one simple question? Which do you prefer? Something that is given to you or something you obtain yourself? I am but only a simple man of the emperor. I cannot offer you the stars or riches but only faithfulness."

Fausta blinks her eyes a few times with a still bored expression on her face. "Number 12." She says, you raising an eyebrow in confusion. "You're the twelfth person to use a line like that. Don't try and demean me Mr. Shabby." She says, shaking her head. "If you think you can keep me entertained, prove it. What have you done? What great deed do you lay claim to? I've never heard of Valencia and for all I know, it's a back water cesspool of a planet. Why should I care about you?" She says, reminding you of a particularly harsh tutor you had growing up.

>>
(do we really want this to work out? i mean she seems high maintenance and would likely want to divert a lot of funds to pointless things like a (massive) palace like the one she grew up in)

Remember the story of Jorah Mormont, we dont this to turn out like his marriage, anyways we should try to get this marriage, but if not im sure there are many noble families interested in marriage ties to an up and coming planetary governor
>>
>>40587083
Oh it is a backwater no question. The colony was just founded. But since founding I have fought orks, dealt with Eldar on my palent'smoon, seen necrons coming froma space hulk get ripped to shreds by elder weaponry from that same moon, Fought with the help of the valiant Kriegers and elite deathwatch a fungal infestation that preyed upon humanity, and rediscovered a pre-dark age hive filled to the brim with heresy of unwashed masses which I forced down into the underhive and resettled the structure in the name of the Emperor. Of course I imagine the youth of my planet would not appeal to your rarified tastes, nor would the constant action.
>>
>>40587083
"Look , frankly I don't even want to be here, bandying words with you. I'd much rather be dealing with affairs back in Valencia, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to further my goals amongst the various nobility on display at you party. No offense, but courting you was the last thing on my mind when I received your invitation. Can I go now?"

>Implying acting disinterested isn't the best way to lure in spoiled brats

cmon /tg/ step it up
>>
>>40587083

By your standards, I am sure Valencia is nothing but a mere backwater. A mere 28 months ago there was not a single Imperial settlement on the planet. I led the colonization effort. Since that time I have destroyed a necron space hulk, purged the planet of feral orks, and defeated an invasion by foul spore like xenos. Under my leadership, I have formed an alliance with the death korps of Krieg, and cleansed an ancient hive city of heretics. Yet Valencia is notable not for what it is, but for what it can become. Today, after facing innumerable threats to its existence, we produce thousands of advanced plasma guns and sets of carapace armor per month. Without the specter of war, production is likely to increase by several orders of magnitude. I offer you an escape from the stagnation that surrounds you. Come with me, and you can be part of growing a new world from the ground up. I cannot promise you the luxury you live in today, but I can promise you an active life, growth, and opportunity. I offer you the chance to make something new for yourself.

"Well Fausta, I'm certain that by your standards, Valencia is a backwater. 28 months ago and there wasn't a single active imperial settlement on its surface." You say with a smirk. Fausta opens her mouth to speak, but you interrupt her. "However, in those 28 months, I have negotiated with Eldar, fended off a Necron space hulk, cleansed the planet of an Ork infestation, did war with a race of fungal xenos that infect whatever they touch. I discovered a hive world that predates the Horus heresy that was filled to the brim with heretics and then I drove them into the darkness of the under hive. Valencia isn't much now, but it has potential to become more than anyone can imagine. Even now my workers mine ceramite, the very metal used in holy Space Marine armor, those angels of the Emperor who came to Valencia's aid in fighting the fungal threat." You take a step forward, putting a hand out. "I don't promise you riches princess, but I promise you a land without boredom and the chance to shape a planet's growth, rather than chip away at the mountain it has already become."
For a while, Fausta seems speechless. However, she soon smirks the same cocky smirk you've seen before. "So, what you're saying is, is that your planet is interesting, while you are boring." She says with a laugh. "Very well, you've interested me.There shall be a dinner for those that have interested me. You may come, if you so wish." She says, clapping her hands once. "Servants, see Sean out." She says, using the wrong name as you are led back out into the hall.
As you leave the guest room where the remaining suitors wait there shot, a woman in military dress uniform approaches you. "Real piece of work, isn't she?" She says with a laugh, leaning up against the wall and crossing her arms. "My brother came out of his meeting crying. Always knew he was weak."

"Va-Sera. Lord General Va-Sera, though I suppose it should be Lady General." She says with a shrug. Unlike Fausta, Va-Sera has tan skin and a muscular build, though not overly so. She has short red hair and her dress uniform is adorned with many medals. "Frederick told me about you. He and I worked together long ago, during the Valeris campaign. I couldn't believe my ears when I heard he had settled down on some newly found planet, but he assured me you are the best of friend." I'm sure Frederick has embellished a little, but, yes there has been much conflict on Valencia. Ever since the colony was founded, there been Orks, Eldar on our moon, necrons coming from a spacehulk, a highly infective xeno fungus from the same moon the elder were on, and heretics in a pre heresy hive.. "But of course. I never pass up the opportunity to hear more of Frederick's stories." You say, joining Va-Sera at the table with the other generals. For many hours you drink, the sound of loud laughter from your table seeming to be the only source of revelry in the party, with so many other nobles cursing their lack of luck with Fausta. You learn much about the other generals, including Va-Sera. Her brother is apparently the governor in the planet she is from, while she leads the sector's defense forces and guardsmen regiments. Her brother was a socialite while Va-Sera always had an eye for adventure, constantly getting caught growing up taking the family's vehicles for joy rides. She was the first female Lord Generals from her sector, the Gharfala sector, though that was mere circumstance rather than there being any laws against it. The Gharfala sector is close to Krieg and she had served under Frederick many times, the two already fast friends.
Finally, the party begins to empty out, and you are more than a little drunk, though the other members at the table are as well. Helena approaches you and Frederick. "John, we should really be getting back. It is late and my internal power supply needs recharged before I start going on emergency power."

Va-Sera smiles. "Oh my, an invitation to a Planetary Governor'sh room? This night is getting interesting already." She says, laughing for no particular reason. Helena rolls her eyes, helping to steady the three of you, using one of her mechadendrites for Va-Sera. She gets the three of you back to the auto carriage you drove over here with, her taking the front seat next to Jacobim and beginning to utter the prayer of key turning. Va-Sera looks over at you with a smile. "You know... my brother is going to be so pissed with how late I'll be getting back to our room... what should I tell him?" The next few hours are a blur of drinking, story telling, and more drinking. You're not entirely sure what all happened, but when you next wake up, it is noon and you are lying next to Va-Sera, the two of you having slept on the floor. Luckily, the two of you both seem to still be dressed, though both of your outfits are very muffled up. Va-Sera is also wearing one of Frederick's gas masks for some reason.
