Baba's... training, if you could call it that, turns out to be nothing like Master Roshi's. Your first few days were spent simply helping her with some errands, learning your way around her place, and a little bit of learning more about the nature of the connection to the mortal plane and the spiritual realm. Surprisingly, even to Baba, is how quickly you and Acer pick up such lessons. Perhaps something you can thank ghost dad for, you understand the nature of the soul, its persistence beyond death and possibility of reincarnation into the world of the living, especially for those who must be cleansed of evils.

Among her fighters, Man-Wolf seems the most terrified of you and your brother, keeping his distance. Fangs Dracula, her vampire fighter, initially seemed dismissive of you, but quickly changed his tune when he discovered that you were the ones that, in his own words, "got rid of that selfish, moronic prick Lucifer and his entourage." Her invisible, see-through human fighter, Sukesan, didn't seem to mind you both, though you and Acer somehow keep managing to bump into him when you both don't have your Scouters on you, something Baba says you will need to learn on your own. Bandages, the Mummy fighter, seemed to not like the either of you all that much, but tolerated your presence. Contrasting the rest of them, however, was Spike the Devilman, himself a 2-time winner of the World Martial Arts Tournament, who seemed to genuinely appreciate you both. Odd that the actual demon was the most approachable.

At one point, a small, implike man with pale green skin arrived with a group of 3 strange fighters. Baba seemed to dislike him the least, and when some of his fighters stepped up to her challenge, she requested the assistance of you or your brother.

You decided to let your brother handle these folks, when it came time to fight them, and said you'd be there if he needed any help. While Baba's first couple fighters, Bandages and Man-Wolf, didn't fair well against them, Spike managed to defeat one after a long and exhausting fight. He tried to finish his opponent, whose name you learned was Sansho, off with an attack he called the Devilmite Beam, but Baba convinced him otherwise. Spike couldn't continue against the other fighters, so Acer stepped up to the plate.

The opponents began laughing at him, but quickly realized such was a mistake. Nicky, the next opponent, was beaten swiftly, much to the shock of the others. Upon asking who you kids were, Acer proudly told them that you are members of the Turtle School, himself a finalist in the World Tournament and you, his sister, the Champion. The next fighter, Ginger, did not fare any better than the first, collapsing to the ground from a single punch by your brother. Finally, the little imp himself, who said he was called Garlic Jr., entered the fray. Initially Acer had the upper hand, but the little imp apparently had a surprising secret: he could transform his body into a gigantic, muscle-bound form and increase his strength greatly, your Scouter giving you a reading of 810.

You stepped into the fray with and your brother and fought with everything you had, and while it was difficult, you both utilized your superior speed and skill, Acer finishing the opponent off with the Will 'O Wisp. Garlic Jr. swore that he'd return one day to deal with you both.

Baba chuckled at the remark, and had her pink ghost servant getting some for you both, and Spike as well. Bandages was mostly shocked by how strong you and your brother were, Man-Wolf saying that he told him you two weren't to be underestimated.

"So, what was that Garlic guy's deal, anyway?" you ask your new mentor.

Baba sighed. "Garlic Jr. is an angry, vengeful, jealous man. His father was among the candidates to become the... Guardian, of this world." The way she said the word 'Guardian' implied something more, with you giving a look that asked what it meant. "The next Kami-sama. The God of Earth. However strong he was, his heart was full of wickedness, and the former Kami rejected him. He led an army of his followers in rebellion, but was defeated and sealed away. Now, the man seeks to claim what he believed should be his father's."

The first thing you and Acer learned is something that Baba herself felt was incredibly important: the ability to protect yourselves against curses and other magical traps. It's not a simple undertaking, as the skill requires even more learning and deciphering of arcane and mystical ways of thinking. But at the same time, you also understand how valuable the skill is. One of the most terrifying potential aspects of curses and darker magics, you come to understand, is the ability to take control of or cloud a person's thoughts. Such a skill is not only advanced, it's outright vile, and requires a darker mind to even BEGIN to hope to accomplish such a thing.

You both then learn telepathy, a skill that you recall Master Roshi possessing. You just know this will be handy, given how much your previous Master could gain without you saying a word. Baba warns you, however, to not abuse such a skill, as it should be only used to help others and understand them more, not trick them or cheat them.

Finally, and made easier thanks to the new telepathy skill, you and Acer gain a small bit of foresight sense. This skill grants you a momentary glimpse into the future, but it takes concentration to be able to use it correctly. If you try to just use it without the concentration, it's almost useless at best and downright distracting at worst. Still, this is something you just KNOW Yamcha would get a kick out of, given his favoritism of a certain character.

You start to understand a bit on telekinesis, but know that this will take much more time and practice. Finally, on September 9th, Baba calls you and Acer to see her. She had been quite cheerful up until recently, and now she seems downright worried.

"Yes..." Baba sighed out, looking at her crystal ball. "Acer, Maple, today is the day the Dragon Balls have become usable again."

"Huh, it's been a year already?" Acer comments. Ah how time flies.

"Yes... kids, there are currently three parties that will seek out the Dragon Balls." she starts as she turns to you and brobro. "The first is the one I am least concerned about. Your friend, Son Goku, wishes to recover his grandfather's Four Star ball, to remember him by. He is on his way to meet with Bulma as we speak."

You can't help but smile at that. That's so... Goku. Yet you know that's not all. "What are the other two?"

"The second party is a man named Pilaf. A blue imp, he is a Makyan like Garlic, but with more bluster than strength. However, he has been able to contact what is left of the Red Ribbon Army's forces, and add them to his strength. He has but one goal: world domination."

"There were STILL Dumb Name Army folks roaming around?" you ask, gritting your teeth.

"Indeed. Their leadership was dismantled, and Pilaf came in offering them a new person to fight for, with similar goals to their original ones. The last party is a vile beast of a man named King Gurumes. He grew rich off precious blood-red stones that exist in his land, but they cursed his body and his mind. He has insatiable hunger, and has ravaged his people's land trying to gather more and more of the cursed Blood Rubies. He seeks the Dragon Balls to free himself from his curse... but shows no signs of learning his lesson."

"Find your friend Goku, let him know what is going on. If he is prepared, I am certain you all will be able to stop these fiends. Safeguard the Dragon Balls if you must. Just please, Maple, Acer, hurry."

You and your brother step outside, activating your Scouters to Dragon Radar mode. Long range scans show that it's working.

A quick scan shows you that you're in luck. There's a Dragon Ball close to Baba's Palace, in the mountainous area nearby on the way to Bulma's. No high Power Levels nearby, either, so that's a good sign.

"I see it, too, sis. I'll grab it, cover for me, and then head right for Bulma's while I secure it." Acer states.

"Sounds like a plan, brobro!" you shout as the two of you bolt into the sky. You think on trying to telepathically contact Bulma, but can't quite pick her out among everyone in her city at this distance. As you and Acer fly you see that the Dragon Ball is in front of a cave, some sort of animal apparently playing with it. Acer heads down, and as you check to make sure there's nothing following you two, you head off and let your brother deal with the animal.

Arriving at Capsule Corp, you spot Bulma, Yamcha, Puar, Oolong and another figure outside, you assume to be Goku. Landing, the figure seems... oddly dressed, but the first words out of his mouth confirm your suspicion.

"Hi Maple! Long time no see!"

She then asked for my help getting her to a special scroll somewhere in the west, and I said it's the least I could do. We fought a lot of demons on the way! They wanted to hurt Trip, but I wasn't gonna let that happen." the monkey boy states with pride.

"Mountain... fell on you..." you repeat. That... what.

"I got hungry during training. Forgot to go home and get some grub after big me and the person with purple hair came by. They were really strange, boy, at least I think he was a boy, said something about... machine time, I dunno. They might have been looking for a watch? But I didn't have one. They they were gone, and I couldn't find them." Goku scratches the back of his head.

"...I have many questions, but not enough time. Look, everyone, we need to start looking for the Dragon Balls, ASAP!" you frantically tell the group.

"Uh, why, what's the emergency?" Bulma asks. You then start to explain everything you heard from Baba. The group is a little shocked, but Goku seems eager, tail wagging at the prospect. Bulma shakes her head, but seems to understand the urgency. "Well... how should we handle this, then?"

"Gimme a sec, Acer should be here soon with one of the Dragon Balls." you tell her, pointing to your Scouter. Bulma gives a proud grin. "So... what was this... 'Trip' girl like?" you ask Goku.

"She was really nice! She kinda reminded me of Bulma a bit, but older." the monkey boy tells you.

"Well, sounds good to be appreciated for once." Bulma remarks, but you can tell it's more of a joke than anything else. She and Yamcha then let out a little chuckle. A few minutes pass, and you start wondering what's taking your brother so long. You activate your Scouter, and then notice a few things. First, Yamcha's Power Level has increased a bit, up to 285. Second, Goku's has increased a lot, now clocking in at 755. And third, Acer is still where you left him, only now seeming like he's on the move. You contact him telepathically, taking a moment to locate him. Much easier than trying to find Bulma in the crowded city.

"Brobro, what's taking so long?" you ask, the rest of the group looking at you slightly confused.

"This dumbass tiger doesn't want to part with the Dragon Ball! I have to bring him here." he responds.

"...tiger?" you repeat, to everyone else's continued confusion. Ah, might want to tell them about that some time.

Acer finally arrives, and... yep. That's a tiger. Wearing a hat. With a Dragon Ball on it. The 5-star ball, at that.

"Look, it was the easiest way to deal with the situation." he tells you. The tiger looks defensive, but isn't actively trying to attack anyone. You approach it slowly, calmly, and it sits down. You try to read its mind. It seems like an ordinary tiger, smarter than usual, but otherwise ordinary. It just... doesn't want anyone to take its Dragon Ball. The thoughts that seem to keep repeating in its mind are "shiny" and "orb" and "roll" and "MINE." Also "cool hat." Do... do tigers even understand such an abstract concept? Well, apparently this one does.

"Forget it. OK, look, who's on board for hunting some Dragon Balls and saving the world?!" you say excitedly, turning to everyone there.

"I am! Me, me!" Goku responds, jumping in the air.

"I'll go too." Bulma states with determination.

"A-are you sure?" Yamcha asks hesitantly.

"Of course I am! After all, someone needs to be there in case someone's Radars stop functioning."

"Then I'm coming too." the young man gives. "I don't wanna get left behind here."

The Celestials use magic to determine that Maple has the exact dimensions and strength to be a suitable table leg. Another is to the east, in a deserted area. These three are the closest ones around.

Sorry about the delay, wife just got done with making dinner.

You give Acer a signal to head towards the jungle area, Goku following you both. The jungle is quite warm and humid, but in spite of how heavy his outfit seems, Goku isn't at all bothered by the heat. Huh. Might be something special to that thing after all.

"Ugh, just when I'd gotten used to desert heat, we get this." Acer complains.

"Oh hush brobro, we won't be here for long." you tell him as you roll your eyes. With your Scouter's Dragon Radar, it doesn't take too long to scout out the Dragon Ball, but you quickly see signs of the area not being completely deserted.

"Listen up, men!" a woman's voice shouts through the jungle. Goku initially wants to investigate, but you and Acer hush him and move closer. "Pilaf just informed us that the Dragon Ball is close by. With the Radar working, we should be able to gather them all in a week if none of you slack off. So start looking!"

Well. That can't be good. You, Acer, and Goku get into a tree and observe who's giving the orders. A young human woman, maybe in her mid 20s, with purple hair, wearing somewhat light clothing and a large hat. After giving her orders, she sits down and is fanned by one of her soldiers. Goku tilts his head, trying to think if he remembers her from somewhere.

A quick scan with your Scouter gives you some encouraging news. Everyone here except the woman have Power Levels below 100, most below 10. The woman herself oddly has a Power Level of 150, quite a bit higher than you'd expected, but not too threatening. You signal for Acer to move out in one direction, Goku sticking with you. The Dragon Ball is by another group of people, not sure if they're with her.

"On three." Acer says. "One."

"Two." Goku adds.

"Three!" you shout. The three of you bolt around the camp, disturbing the woman's attempt at a nap and terrifying her soldiers. The group try to find what caused the commotion, and the woman jumps up, calling someone on her radio.

"This is Colonel Violet, come in, there's another party here! I repeat, someone else is after the Dragon B-" She stops as she seems to notice Acer. "YOU! All troops, open fire on any kids you see!"

"Huh. Ex-Red Ribbon, then." your brother comments. "Looks like we have fans."

"Figured as much, Dumb Name Army folks are as relentless as they are stupid. Goku, mind holding them off?" you ask him, skillfully dodging around the trees.

"On it! Heeeey! Mr. soldier people! Over here!" he shouts happily, leaving a number of Afterimages behind him. You and Acer locate the Dragon Ball, apparently in the possession of indigenous people, and they don't seem happy to see you. More soldiers arrive, and upon seeing the Dragon Ball, completely ignore you and Acer and attack the people.

You direct Acer to go for the Dragon Ball as they start to fight things out, then quickly knock out all the soldiers. A barrage of afterimages, each with a silly, dorky expression, terrifies and confuses them as you deliver swift blows to each person. The native folks seem perplexed by your actions as you gather the unconscious opponents, picking them all up and flying them away. They then slowly start to back away, pretending that they didn't just see a little girl knock out a squad of soldiers in about 10 seconds.

Goku brings a pile of soldiers himself over to you, and Acer presents the Dragon Ball to you all. The woman glares daggers at you. "You damn brats will pay for this! Don't think I'd forgotten our first encounter, brats! And you, monkey boy, you might be wearing a stupid new outfit but I could tell it's you. You'll all PAY!"

Acer lifts an eyebrow, tossing the Dragon Ball up in the air and catching it. "Have we met before? I can't seem to recall you."

"YOU RUINED MY AIR SQUADRON!" she howls.

"Ohhh... when we first arrived... Hah! Well serves you right!" Acer laughs.

"Violet if you don't tell me what's going on in the next ten seconds, I'll do more than cut some of your pay!" it shouts. It sounds a little familiar, almost like Garlic Jr.'s but not quite. You walk over to the radio.

"Colonel Violet is currently tied up with something at the moment, please try again never." you tell him, trying to sound like a recorded message.

"Oh, well my appolo- WAIT, WHO IS THIS? WHO DARES MOCK EMPEROR PILAF, SOON TO BE RULER OF THE WORLD?!"

"The name's Maple Mahogany, World Martial Arts Champion, Turtle School Master, and vanquisher of the Red Ribbon Army!" you announce, doing a little pose. He can't see it, but you don't care. "And believe me, Pilaf, my friends and I will never let you have your wish!"

The voice goes silent for a moment, taking in what you just said. "Oh. Oh shi- SHU, MAI, CONTACT SILVER AND MURASAKI! We have a SITUATION here!" It goes silent again, and stays that way.

As you leave to take the soldiers to the authorities, the indigenous people return. One of them steps out among the crowd, and bows wordlessly to you.

"You're finally learning, huh Goku?" you chuckle as you elbow him in the arm. The monkey boy grins wide at. The three of you take to the sky, noticing the setting sun. Already off on a great start, maybe this will be over quicker than you thought!

"Oooh..." Goku comments, his stomach growling. "Maple, can we find some dinner soon?"

Goku is very hard to romance, you have to be a strong fighter to get his attention. Being a normal smitten earthing won't get you far unless you can at least keep in distance of him when courting.

Well she will have a much easier time romancing Tien if she wants it. Toriyama in "Z" more or less wrote off a whole bunch of characters for long stretches of the manga. If you were not a Saiyan, you were a victim to be blown up by a bad guy, if you were lucky.

The funniest thing I've read about the making of Dragon Ball is how Toriyama often almost literally comes up with everything at the last minute. He also actually sat down and re-read the entirety of Dragon Ball for the first time in years after learning what the original plot for Battle of Gods was, just to make sure things would be connect better for the rewrites. Which is good because apparently the original script was like, GT-tier, maybe barely above Evolution-tier in terms of how it'd go.
