The smell of rain on stone hits your nostrils as you approach the airship. All around you can hear the pitter-patter of rain as flightline crewmen rush around in ponchos, ushering the crowd of boarders onto the airship and calling out to clear lines. Ahead of you the throng of passengers presses in tight, and you can almost sense the stress of the ticket-masters checking everyone's passes. It appears that the locals aren't the type to queue up and form a line, a minor annoyance.

After patiently waiting your turn there is finally enough room for you to squeeze in. Tilting back your hood you pull out your ticket and passport. The ticket-master glances at the passport and visa, and his eyes widen momentarily, but as he takes a glance at your face he puts his professional mask back on and smiles.

"Hello sir. Welcome aboard the Queen Pearl. Have a pleasant passage."

"Thank you very much sir."

You flash the man a winning smile, feeling your fangs poke out against your gums as you do. Professionalism is something which you have come to appreciate, especially after you have left your father's Dungeon to start one of your own. For one such as you travel can be a complicated matter, but passage aboard the Queen Pearl should cut out a substantial portion of your journey. Climbing the steps of the pad up onto the passenger boarding dock, you spare a glance back at the crowd pushing through the rain.

*************************************************************

Cedar and lavender. That is the smell of your cabin. The chest, wardrobe, and night desk certainly explain the cedar smell, but only with closer examination are you able to sniff out the source of the scents: little globes of scented oils tucked away in little compartments throughout the room. Shoving your bags into the wardrobe you decide not to get into too much of a hurry to unpack. You will, after all, have some time to do so. Shrugging off your wet cloak and hanging it up to dry, you turn to the mirror. Violet eyes look back at you, and your alabaster skin glistens with what might be perspiration or precipitation. A masculine jaw flashes a smile with white fangs, and you note that your silver hair has started to curl in the humidity.

Having a seat for a few minutes you ponder the circumstances of your journey. Whenever one of your ilk who is male reaches a certain age and after certain preparations are complete, you are sent out into the world to carve out your own territory and find yourself a Dungeon of your own. Presently the Western continent, Alaneasia, seems like better land to seek to carve a place for yourself within. Taking a moment, you silently give thanks for:

You have been gifted with a generous ration of jade, gold, and silver egg-dust to finance your projects. Counting your blessings is all well and good, but now it is time to focus on planning for the future. As you settle in for the multi-day journey you consider what is to come. Finding the foundation of a new Dungeon will be important, perhaps some cavern or maybe one of those enchanted woods that are in vogue these days. Alternately you might opt to go with a classic, such as a run down abandoned castle. Alanesia has a number of all of the above.

Opting to stretch your legs for a bit, you pull on something a bit more formal and leave the cabin, locking it behind you. Where would you like to go?

Opting to make your way to the dining cabin, you sidle your way past several bewildered passengers who are rather surprised to see a young Monster Lord onboard. Once as you make your way through economy class you hear the distant cry of an adventurer down the hall you just came through. Plebian. Eventually the maze of passages leads you to the dining cabin where it seems that it is almost time for an early lunch.

The doors open, and the scent of spices is the first thing that hits you. Spices and mahogany now that you think about it. Taking a deep whiff you stride in. The bar a two section affair with a pair of bartenders present, but with the stools pulled in close so that it feels cozy. The rest of the cabin is occupied by a set of tables spread out in the open. The corner seems a bit cozier, with a cluster of tables suggesting a more intimate, if crowded, setting for a group. There is a piano sitting unused, and you rehearse keys in your mind as you glance at it. The smell of the food is, of course, absolutely ravishing. A perk of airship travel is that the larder is stocked with various foods and spices from all over the known world.

Over at the end of the bar is a cloaked fellow wearing the mark of one of the slaver's guilds, you think it may be one of the minor ones but you aren't certain. Near the bar a pair of merchants discuss trade opportunities in Alaneasia, specifically the possibility of shipping cash crops grown on bountiful land back East. Near the kitchen a bored looking lady, possibly a minor noble of the human variety, sips on a cup of tea and waits on her food.

A server takes note of you and approaches, face a mask of pleasant friendliness.

"Good morning sir, we'll be serving lunch shortly. Is there anywhere in particular you would like to sit?"

"Right here is good."

You give him a nod, and he leads you to a nearby table close to the merchants discussing the hauls that they hope to bring in. Catching a furtive glance in your direction you smile internally; Dungeons are known as rich potential trading posts given that egg clutches leave behind precious stones and metals that merchants can often barter for. Confident that one or both of them will seek to make your acquaintance, you glance at the menu before ordering.

"I'll take a bit of coffee while I wait on my meal I think. The southport if you don't mind. For my meal I think I'll start with the truffle soup and work my way to the ropa vieja."

"Very good sir. If you'd like something additional to drink I'll be back to check on how you are doing."

"Thank you."

Taking his leave you note that the smell from the kitchen has intensified. If only humans could smell like you could this place would be packed. Eying the drink menu you wait for one of the human merchants to approach you. But which one will work up the nerve first. You glance up and the shorter one looks away quickly. Probably not him, naked greed but no spine. The taller one then?

As soon as one excuses himself to use the restroom you have your answer: the taller merchant turns in your direction and clears his throat.

"Ahem."

"Yes?"

"It's rare to see someone such as yourself on one of these excursions. Is it business that takes you out West, or pleasure?"

"Neither I'm afraid. I find back East to be absolutely stifling you see. No great places left for a young lord to make himself a home. There seems to be plenty of ripe territory out in Alaneasia though."

"I had heard that. The locals of your measure seem to be mostly feral. To a merchant of course any information about the, ah, topography is quite valuable."

Pausing for a moment while your coffee arrives you consider the statement.

"I suppose that it must be. What sort of ventures bring you out this way, Mister...?"

"Tibalt. Michael Tibalt. I am headed out with a shipment of weapons that I have a contract to produce for a small mercenary company awaiting their arrival. After that who knows? It's a wide land after all."

Considering his statement you sip your coffee, then rejoin. You note an irked look in his direction from the short merchant returning from the washroom.

"Perhaps I ought to ask where to leave word for you as we reach town. I can always use some assistance with procurement after all."

Timing it perfectly you turn just as the second man approaches.

"Ah, how do you do sir? Your companion was just telling me of his business out West."

"Uh, hello. I am doing well, and I'm sure that he is talking your ear off about his ambitious schemes."

The merchant gives Tibalt a glance that reveals a curious mix of frustration and relief.

"But of course! So what is your area of business Mister...?"

"Cruise. Thomas Cruise. I am mostly a spice merchant. I thought to bring whiskey and other liquors from the East and unload them out on the frontier, then see if I can find some interesting and profitable spices to ship back."

"I see. Do merchants always carry a stock of goods with them everywhere they go?"

"It's an effective means of getting around currency fluctuations," chimes in Tibalt, "the main worry is that you might not be able to move the good."

You can smell your food cooking now.

You decide to inquire about the more colorful populations out West. The political leaders. The socialites. The adventurers. Just a matter of doing it tactfully.

"Well I should certainly hope that conditions are less stifling in Alaneasia for you as they will be for me."

"Yes, I certainly hope so too."

"Speaking of, what is the local scene like?"

"Pardon?"

"He means the social playing field."

"Ah. Well nobody is rich like they are back East. There is a lot of opportunity, lots of untapped resources, but nobody has really done the tapping yet. Not much banking activity either."

"I see, I see," you bite your lip in apparent thought, "so there are no prominent families out West?"

"Oh, certainly not. Well, maybe a few on second thought. Mostly they are the children of families who couldn't inherit back home and were sent out to manage colonial lands. There are also a few minor gentry living there whose station is independent of anyone back home."

"Well then the social scene must be quite tame."

"So we are told."

"No iron fisted governors squeezing everyone for taxes?"

"Not often, no. Not that those would apply to yourself, of course."

"But of course. So there are no political strongmen that one ought to lip-service toward?"

"At present I can't think of anyone."

"Must be a lot of adventuring types then."

"Oh yes. Lots of old ruins to raid, monsters in the..."

Tibalt pauses, but you beckon for him to continue.

"wilderness. They tend to be out in force, lots of greenhorns cutting their teeth stay close to town."

"All good things to know, thank you sirs. Do leave some means of reaching you. It's good to have a few friendly faces in the area."

Lunch approaches, and with an informal dismissal you turn to the soup and begin eating. Delicious as it is the second course is even better, though less rich. The meal sits heavy in your stomach, and by the time you have finished the merchants have left, though they have left business cards.

Taking stock of the room you consider your options. The slaver seems to be good and drunk by this point, though you still have a social excuse in the form of the bar to approach him. You crack your knuckles and decide that your maiden airship flight should be marked by musical accompaniment. Stretching long, nimble fingers you stride over to the piano after settling your check and leaving a tip. Confident, you sit down and examine the instrument. Nothing fancy, but fine enough for your tastes. Deciding to open with something smooth you begin to play.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6KRIMASing

As you find your rhythm you can almost imagine the instrumental accompaniment as appropriate for the song. Out of the reflection on nearby glass you note that the noblewoman has slowed her egress, and now appears to be lingering, enjoying the music. The slaver appears to be slowing down on his drinking, but not completely. Perhaps he won't be staggering back to his cabin before dinner. Maybe.

Unfortunately you seem to have read the mood wrong. The jazzy tune you play out doesn't quite suit the noblewoman, and after a short time she leaves, and the slaver proceeds to booze even more heavily to the melancholy rhythms. The staff however seem to be enjoying the impromptu performance. Perhaps they appreciate the irony of the patrons being the entertainment. Win some, lose some, such is life.

After finishing the song you arise and decide that the slaver is too drunk to be worth chatting with at this point. Whereto now?

Moving up to the top deck you find yourself at the observation deck just after noon. There is a slope to it in order to protect the observers from wind sheer, and part of it is located behind a glass screen. However the view is spectacular in spite of that: down below you can see the storm that the ship has risen above raging, and in breaks in between that you can see blue water with white crests adding definition to its seemingly infinite roll. Truly airship travel is the way of the future. After a few minutes of observation you catch sight of sails down below. Several ships seem to be pursuing another. Piracy, if you are not mistaken. Rumor held that piracy and banditry were not uncommon out West, though airships are uncommon enough that they do not often need to fear being pirated. For now. As the scene vanishes below you, you find contentment in merely watching all of these things pass by in contentment.

****************************************************************

Hours go by and you find yourself at dinner. More pleasantries, more strangers with whom you become acquainted. More information teased out about your destination. Apparently Alaneasia's principal problem is an abundance of wizard and sorcerous overlords who individually are not major powers but who collaborate to destroy anything larger than a human city-state or particularly large nest of demons. Civilization as such has had trouble taking route there, at least as you know it. Armies of conjured and summoned soldiers supplemented with feral monsters and black-hearted humans are the primary brutes employed by the mage-kings, though they each are fierce rivals. Just another thing to keep in mind you suppose.

You don't ever quite manage to time an encounter with the noblewoman you saw at lunch, but you learn that she is the daughter of a Marquis back East, and that she apparently is likely to become a fixture with regard to her family holdings out West. Pondering the implications you conclude that it might be wise to make her acquaintance at some point, should it prove that you are settling in close enough proximity. Yet another thing to contemplate.

********************************

After almost three days it is night when your destination arrives within sight. A modest city, with high walls around it, glows beneath you. The market is still bustling as the airship draws near, and you can make out people rushing between merchant stalls as the evening draws near. Meanwhile food vendors push carts out towards the street, hawking their dinner fare at passing laborers and merchants alike as business shuts down for the day and nightlife begins to awaken. You spot what might be some sort of theater, though you cannot say for certain that is what you are seeing.

Soon, of course, you will be meeting your brides. As is typical, you have been betrothed to three eligible and fertile females, though you suppose that more effort could have been put into the courtship. No matter, they will do as brides to birth troops for you as you court more. Perhaps you will crack some rival's head open and steal away his harem someday soon.

Now what sort of monster were your brides again? (Pick 3)

We probably just need to fulfill some requirements in our Dungeon before we can potentially recruit one.
>>
You just had to use the monstergirl gimmick didn't you OP? Was it to get easy players or because you find them essential to your game?

It takes you a few moment after disembarking to find your land-legs again. As you walk down the busy street you recall that you were supposed to meet your brides to be at a hotel just outside of the city. Making your way through the busy streets you lament not spending the night to enjoy a taste of the city, but given that you may just wind up burning it down perhaps it would be the better part of discretion not to do so and risk growing too attached. Still, the feeling of the city at dusk is lovely. The place is almost a living thing, and the smells... well, aside from the occasional waft of sewage and body odor it is consistently decent.

With purpose in your stride you take off down the cobbled street.

***********************************************************

It is nighttime when you reach the hotel. It's a decently sized hotel, though perhaps it is mere generosity not to call it an inn. It seems to be a place for travelers who cannot afford to stay in the city might sleep, though it appears to be a port of call for the more interesting sort who perhaps would be unwelcome there. Only after you pass by the wall of stink coming from the stables does the scent hit you: pheromones. Your pulse quickens just a bit, and your stride lengthens. So this is why your father had you sent away when he knew you were soon to hit maturity: home might have quickly become unbearable if you were surrounded by this smell all of the time and unable to do anything about it.

Entering the inn you can almost follow a scent trail all the way up to the right room, but your graces give you pause. You stop at the front desk.

"Excuse me."

The inkeeper looks up at you from his bookkeeping and his ale.

"Yes?"

"I believe there are some ladies waiting for me here."

He looks confused for a moment. Then suspicious. Then he takes note of your skin and hair and his eyes widen.

"Uh, right. Upstairs."

"Thank you my good sir."

You hardly wait for him to finish before ascending, stopping yourself from taking two at a time. The door is easily located, and you knock once, twice, three times loudly. Straightening yourself up you endeavor to stand like a gentleman.

"Come in."

The voice is light and feminine. Come inside you do. Opening the door you are not surprised to discover all three of them waiting for you. What you are surprised to discover is that the hotel room seems a bit lived in, to put it mildly. Beds have been pushed to the side, and the table has been set in the center with a great map unfurled atop it. Armaments and empty beer steins sit openly around the room. There is a mood of guarded tension as you walk in, but it almost immediately evaporates.

The blonde elf is nearest the door. Pointed ears, blonde hair, blue eyes, cream colored complexion, and legs all the way up. Naked steel lies nearby, and you can feel the hum of low-level innate thaumaturgy from her. Next to catch your eye is the dark elf. Tall, pointed ears, white hair that contrasts dark skin, and red eyes that catch your own. She wears little and seems to be caught in a pose of naked hostility, as though you caught her mid-outburst without warning. From her you also feel the buzz of low-level thaumaturgy. The third woman is better looking than either of the other two though. Curved in the right places but slender. Red hair flowing over horns. Green eyes that smolder with energy. Forked tail and bat wings marking her. You don't need the hum of thaumaturgy or the whisper of innate sorcery to inform you that this is a succubus.

"Good evening, I hope that I haven't come at a bad time. I am, at present, the young Lord Amadeus Whitehorn, and if I am not mistaken you are my in fact my intended. How do you do?"

MC stats?
>>
Forgive me, I don't quite have it in me to introduce and write three new characters distinctively at the moment, nor do I think it wise to cram it in at the end of the thread.

What I can do instead is answer questions about the setting as I'm not ready for bed quite yet. For the curious next quest thread will be tomorrow, starting at around 7PM Eastern US Time.
>>
Hmm, this was better than the expected, albeit short. Make sure to archive this well, OP.
>>
>>40614215
Crunch system in mind for the quest?
>>
>>40614215
What should we, as the players, know that the main character already does?
>>
>>40614211

Working on them. This was a bit of a stealth char-gen. I'll reveal more soon.

>>40614237

Preferably rules light. Enough to cover the dungeon, your legion of progeny, and the logistics behind them as well as combat with adventurers, but not enough to hamstring you.

>>40614256

A good bit. Let me think of some topics to infodump on briefly as a primer and you can ask from there.
>>
>>40614215
What is the cultural significance of Dungeons, and how do they fit into society?
>>
>>40614215
So what did we get from MC's chargen?

>Monsters

All monsters are actually the same species. They all come from eggs, but not all are fertile and thus only a few can reproduce. Males are universally fertile, but a potential male egg requires a sort of Royal Jelly while the embryo is developing in order for it to become a male egg. They're like the King of the hive or the anthill. Few females are fertile, only coming from specially prepared eggs. Females of a certain monster type tend to only give birth to monsters of that type, while males can impregnate females of all types. The vast majority of eggs hatch into lesser, infertile females who cannot reproduce but who are more physically and magically dangerous than the average baseline human. Monsters typically prey on human communities if they are weak and undefended.

Monster eggs are made of precious material. Gold, silver, jade, platinum, and occasionally more precious stones. All female monsters lay eggs, either singly or in clutches. As a rule of thumb the more powerful monsters lay fewer eggs at a time while weaker monsters lay many eggs at a time. They are fertilized internally by the male during coitus. Monster lairs, where they typically nest and lay eggs, are referred to as Dungeons.

Dungeon Lords cooperate with as often as they war with human nobles. Foreign and domestic nobles are as likely to raid one another, and monsters, as monsters are to raid humans and one another. It is still the nature of the world that the strong take from the weak in spite of modern economic development.

>Adventurers and soldiers

Typically they are enhanced by magic, which is why some scruffy sellsword can go toe to toe with a nine-foot tall Amazon. The magic used to enhance them gets more and more advanced everyday. You don't personally know the details of how it works, but you know that they gather experience through a complicated magical harness filled with special gemstones that they wear.
>>
>>40614328

Instead of starting with only 50k zeni you have 60k zeni. You met certain NPCs and made certain observations, but weren't acquianted with others. Plus some behind the scenes stuff.
>>
How many species form the MGE are you going to use/not use?
>>
>>40614655

I'll invent, merge, and delete as suits me.
>>
So, while we will have the goal of building a fucking good dungeon, what else will there be to do? Will there be a plot, more immediate objectives, or what?
>>
>>40614708

Adventurers are going to doubless come for your head, and your chamber full of used egg shells and loot from the last adventurers. There might be rival power players, anything from other Lords to human power-brokers.
>>
Oh come on. You advertised it as a dungeon building quest, only to do waifu picking and ending 3 hours in without doing the essentials.

Dropping, good luck with the quest.
>>
>>40614850
So impatient.
>>
>>40614728
Any idea when the next thread will be?

We need to get a goblin so we have hordes of minions
>>
>>40615156

Tomorrow evening, 7PM Eastern US time.

That would be the consequence of adding a goblin to your ranks.
>>
>>40615182
Cool, I'll try to make it. Living on the west coast has its benefits, but many quests start while I'm still working.

Can you give us a more solid character description?
>>
>>40615216

Physical or non? Part of the reason I had such a long intro is because I wanted you to get a feel for the character without being told.

Physically, you're a fanged and pigment deficient humanoid with much sharper senses and greater physical strength and speed than a regular human.
>>
>>40615301
I was looking for a physical, thanks.

cool, we're playing an albino. Anyone have puns?
>>
How will acquisition of new minions be like?
>>
>>40615329

The ones who are born? A clutch of eggs of varying quality (starting with copper at the bottom and going up) will hatch, spawning them. The ones you court for your harem? You're going to have to request marriages with other Lords, steal their wives, or find them wild and feral.
>>
>>40615349
Do we have a favored personal weapon?

Also, I vote to arm some of our future minions with padded mancatchers to get qt goblins without hurting them
>>
>>40615349
I am getting hyped for the next threads now. Nice. Always wanted this kind of quest/game, never managed to work it out.

Well, I need to go now. Don't forget to archive the thread.
>>
>>40615386

>favored personal weapon

Not that I am currently aware of.

>>40615393

It used to be gauche for the QM to do that. I suppose it's normal now though.
>>
>>40615409
QMs have been doing it at the start of the thread to avoid misarchivals.
>>
>>40615409
Have you run quests before?
>>
>>40615458

Ah.

>>40615461

Long, long ago.
>>
>>40615472
What was it

BFQ?
>>
>>40615487
Can't be. The writing here is decent. I loved BFQ, but it wasn't this, hm, refined.
>>
>>40615519
Stop crushing my dreams anon

Did we ever learn if the QM was a guy? I thought QM was a chick
>>
>>40615487

Nope.
>>
I'm off to bed within a few minutes. I'll see you tomorrow.
