You blink once as you look over the woman in front of you.

She’s sitting on the throne in the inner sanctum of Tymera’s temple, and if that wasn’t enough of a hint she’s a dead ringer for the statues lining the walls off the entry room. There’s also the blanket aura of motherly love and affection that you can practically see wafting through the air. Just in case you weren’t already sure the woman smiling encouragingly at you wasn’t a goddess of some kind.

You know, if you were blind or something.

Of course, that brings you to the other main issue of the moment, namely that while YOU can see Tymera, Mother of Life and Defender of the Innocent (to use her full title), your friends…

“Fishy? Why are you staring at the empty chair?”

Cannot.

Before you can frame a proper reply for Sree’s inquisitiveness; however, Tamamo jumps up and yanks on Sree’s skirt, pulling the harpy off balance with a loud squawk. “There’s a powerful spirit here!” She whispers. “It’s talking to Adria-sama!” You glance over in surprise.

Tamamo’s ears are twitching frantically, as if she’s trying to pick out a conversation happening in the next room. Still, she simply bows low before the throne before backing out of the room, dragging a flapping a struggling Sree with her every step of the way.

You cock a bemused eyebrow as the doors slam shut with a echoing boom.

“Oh my.” Tymera says. When you look back she has one hand covering her mouth as she attempts to hold back a giggle. “Truly you have the most interesting friends.” Her voice takes on a conspiratorial cast as she leans forward in her seat. “Actually I’m quite jealous. Most of the gods are such dreadful bores! But here you have such a devoted and caring little harpy, and that fox girl?” She gushes, “sooo adorable!”

[1/2]
>>
>>40625998
Well, you do admit this isn’t what you expected from a goddess. You open your mouth once, before shutting it again as you try to articulate some form of reply.

Tymera, on the other hand, seems to catch your confusion without breaking stride. “Oh, yes!” She smiles brightly. “I suppose that was rather rude of me. It’s just even if this is the first time we’ve met face to face, I feel like I’ve known you since you were born.” She places a finger under her chin. “Well, I have, technically.” Then the smile is back. “So, sorry for skipping out on the introductions, dear. I’m Tymera, mother of life and all of that.” She waves her hand dismissively. “But please, feel free to call me mom! Though, I understand if it’s a bit weird for you, what with me being the third person who would bear that title.”

And there you have it folks. Straight from the mouth of God. Well, a god anyway. Didn’t you just say you weren’t going to argue theology with yourself? Feels like it happened days ago.

Umm, okay then. This may be surprising, but that’s okay, you can deal. First things first, you kinda need to… reply to her right? Tymera is looking at you with a gentle, but encouraging, smile on her face. So, how do you intend to address you (along with the rest of the population of Reiln’s) patron goddess?

Welcome to RE: Human quest!
In RE: Human quest, you play as Adria, the young adventurer who’s setting out to make her mark on the world.

Voting period is 10-15 minutes in length. Write ins are accepted but I reserve the right to veto any that I deem unfeasible. Dice are 1d100 and best of three, roll high with modifiers as I give them. I will ask for other dice as needed.

During Combat scenes I cut the voting period to about 7 minutes to keep the pace up. So far that hasn’t been a problem.

No... she had a mer father actual. He was male, but only mermaids are really allowed to live in Reiln. Sorry if that was a confusion point, I know I only mentioned it once.

Uh, what? No, Adria has a Mer father, specifically said to be male, her mom is a single mother, and the only other female authority figure is her Auntie.

>>40626011
A goddess wants you to call her mom? Okay, you can deal with that.

You open up with a small grin (after you recover from your shock that is). Raising an eyebrow, you say: “So…mom,” Tymera’s smile grows wider as you adopt her preferred mode of address. “Is this the part where you tell me I’m the chosen one?”

Tymera stifles another giggle behind her hand. “Why of course not dear, you’ve been the chosen one since the day you were born!”

You almost choke. “Wha-”

“Along with all with all the other people who call my river home of course.” She finishes with a devilish little smirk. “I chose all of you as my children after all.”

She’s pretending to act all innocent, but she’s hardly even trying. For your part, you realize that she just pulled a practical joke on you. “Oh, har har…” You mutter, sticking your hands in your pockets. You can feel a blush rising up into your cheeks.

“Oh come now, dear, don’t be like that.” Tymera sweeps off her throne and pulls you into a warm hug. “It was just a joke, Adria!”

“Mooooom!” You squirm a bit, deciding to play up the embarrassed teenager act once more. Tymera laughs some more before releasing you and the two of you share a grin.

“There see?” She says. “That wasn’t so hard. I can’t for the life of me understand why all the other gods insist that everything be so formal all the time!” She moves back to her throne, perching on the armrest.

“Maybe perhaps because you’re all divine and immortal beings with power beyond human ken?” You ask.

Tymera pouts. “Well maybe… but still, I see myself first and foremost as a mother! And no good mother wants her children to be afraid of her. Don’t you agree?” She gives you a knowing smirk.

“Well… yeah…” Okay she’s got to be doing this on purpose. So how do you plan to out troll her?

[1/2]
>>
>>40626781
“But anyway!” She continues. “No, I’m not here to place some mandate of destiny on you. That sort of thing is so droll anyway.” An eye roll. “Though, having another champion or two never hurt, but we can talk more about that later. First and foremost, I just want to thank you for clearing those ungrateful brutes out of my temple! Be sure to pass on my thanks to the kelpies too of course, the poor dears. They mean well, but most people really aren’t kind to them.” She sighs sadly.

“I am a bit disappointed that none of my mermaids could be bothered to check out my river themselves, but I suppose it really shouldn’t come as a surprise that it ended up being you!” She smiles leaning back as she slides into the seat again. Somehow she makes the gesture look gracefull, like water flowing over rocks. “Your kind always seems to be up for new adventures.”

“My kind?” You ask with a smile, content to play the word game for as long as she it. “There really aren’t that many other halflings like me around Reiln.”

“Oh you!” She glares playfully at you. “You’re going to make me say it aren’t you?” You just nod, and she sighs. “Fiiiine, you take all the fun out of it. I was hoping to spatter references through the rest of the conversation until you just had to ask!”

“I almost missed the first one actually.” You admit. “But the second was just a bit heavy handed mom. Though I am curious now that you mentioned ‘my kind’ and all.”

“Yes, yes.” She says, waving her hand through the air, causing water droplets to coalesce into a continuous screen. As you watch in surprise, several distinct pictures begin to play across it. A giant spider woman looking over a dead horse, a tailless lizard with a shiny rock, a cute little dogbold protecting her friends, and a baby harpy climbing around a large nest.

“Mom! I was watching those!” You say. Really that was surprising. In all honesty, you weren’t entirely sure if your past life’s memories weren’t some sort of dream (debating the reality of this world seems immaterial after living in it for seventeen years). Having a goddess confirm it was nice. Except.

“I noticed some similarities between all of them?” You ask.

“Mmhm.” Tymera nods. “You’re the only non Monster so far. I suppose the powers that be decided to try out something different.”

“And they were all girls too.”

“Well… there was one boy.” She pulls a face. “We try not to talk about him. He had so much promise too, but then…” She shakes her head sadly.

“In any case.” She says. “You can’t be comfortable standing like that. Come,” She pats her lap. “Take a seat dear, we have a few things to talk about.”

Though I remember REQM saying that souls not getting their reset to factory defaults was supposed to be a fluke, not something the gods intentionally did.
>>
>>40626889
They are a fluke, just a fluke that gives people a lot of potential. The gods are aware that those that come through with past memories tend to be a bit off at an advantage and have a bit more likelyhood to kick ass.
>>

In my version of things, the gods don't intend for this to happen, but it's not as if they don't notice. Especially the more motherly ones like Tymera.

You let out a much put upon sigh and shrug, making your way over to the throne you unstrap your sword and set it on the floor before sliding into Tymera’s lap.

If a mermaid could see you right now, they’d have a conniption. Speaking of, “So you don’t like how stuck up the mermaids act?”

She sighs, shifting so that you’re face to face (you’re basically sitting next to her, with your knees over her thighs. The stone chair is surprisingly comfortable). “Inasmuch as any mother dislikes their child growing up to be conceited.” She says. “In many ways they ARE the most gifted of my children, but many do not realize that I favor them so that they may share their gifts with others…” She seems to recover a bit of joviality when she pokes you in the ribs. “Humans on the other hand are by far the most frustrating!” She says with a grin.

“Oh really?” You ask, frowning at her. “Well I’m sorry if this human was so frustratingly efficient clearing out your temple.”

She laughs. “Oh, dear, it’s nothing like that.” She reaches out to stroke your hair, and you instinctively lean into the gesture. Huh, if it feels this good you can understand why Tamamo practically melts whenever you scratch her ears. “You all have so much potential, but your species as a whole is the hardest to guide…. Imagine if one of your children could have accomplished anything they set their mind to, but then refused to do anything with that gift.” She sighs. “Things like that happen far too often.”

You nod your head. “Sorry…”

[1/2]
>>
>>40627402
“Oh child.” She coos, giving you another hug. “You have nothing to apologize for. By all accounts you are one of those who is willing to listen.” She smiles. “Like you are right now of course.”

You smile back and relax some. “We keep getting side tracked.” You say after a moment.

She giggles. “Very true, but isn’t it fun.” You frown playfully at her, “Anyway, the main reason I showed up here in person was because I wanted to reward you for your efforts. I hear that such divine gifts are all the rage right now, and I wouldn’t want you to think of me as an old woman!”

You laugh.

“So, is there anything in particular you want?” She asks. “I suppose I could always fully unlock your mer blood… but you’re too adventurous by half to be constrained to my rivers. Though… I hear there are some interesting things happening on the southern oceans. Something about a new pirate king!” She whispers gleefully.

“And we’re off target again.” You say with a smirk.

“Yes well, it’s not my fault you seem to have your affairs well in hand. It’s not like I can offer some fix for an obvious character flaw. Your pigheadedness is part of what makes you so cute after all!”

“Hey!”

But still, a goddess is offering you a gift. And for all intents and purposes she seems to be waiting for you to name your reward like this is some sort of game show. What do you do?

You give her a shit eating grin. “Mom. I want a little sister.”

Tymera, who was about to speak by the looks of it, starts coughing. “A-adria!” She gasps out once she’s gotten control of herself, “Don’t do that to me!” Still, she’s laughing, so that’s a good thing.

“In all seriousness, though, whatever you think is best.” You say.

“Oh?” She cocks an eyebrow.

“Well I figure that, if there were days I would have killed someone to have my own kids say that to me at least once…”

She smiles. “I see. Really, Adria, you are a gem.” Leaning forward, she kisses you on both cheeks. “Then take my blessing, so that your loved ones will all be safe in your embrace.” You feel a sort of… peace, flow through you, and you let out a contented sigh, hugging Tymera tightly. “Would that I could give that blessing to every mother, but I feel like you will use it well.”

“Thank you,” you whisper, getting off of the goddesses lap.

“You’re welcome, dear.” She says with a smile. “But before you go, did you ever hear the story of where horses come from?”

You blink. “Horses? No, I can’t say I have…”

“Oh it’s an old tale, and a true one actually. In this world.” She smirks as she rises out of her chair. She kneels down next to the flowing channels of water that run along the edges of the room. “According to legend, the first horse was a river that ran onto the land.”

“A-What?”

Instead of replying, she brushes her hand through the stream, letting the ripples spread from her fingertips. The water seems to churn, rising up like it’s trying to run out of the confines of the stone channel. Leaping waves coalesce into long legs, splashes become hooves that strike the water.

The fine spray in the air falls into a resplendent mane, and the water gains color and the definition of strong, powerful limbs.

Before your eyes, a stallion trots out of the water tossing it’s mane as it takes its first steps onto dry land.

“What…” You gasp. The stallion walks forward calmly, leaning down to but its head against your shoulder, in the way that horses do. It’s solid, its flesh as warm and its hair as soft as any other horse.

“Since… I heard that you were planning on going on an adventure. I hope you like him, dear. His name is Albatross, and he will run as fleet on water as he does on land.” You can practically hear the smile in Tymera’s voice. “Good Luck, my child.”

“Thank you.” You say, as you reach out, stroking the horse’s muzzle. He whickers gently, pawing at the stone. “Thank you-” You turn, but the room is empty, except for you and the horse. You freeze. “Mom-?” You call, but the only response is the echo of your voice on the walls.

You sigh, petting the horse more, “She had to go for the dramatic exit didn’t she.”

You hear footsteps, and turn to see Sree and Tamamo run back into the room. They both stop at the sight of the horse. “I-I felt the s-s-spirit leave…” Tamamo says.

You smile at them. “Well, that makes one of us.” You turn your attention back to Albatross. “So how are we going to get you out of here?”

He whinnies, tilting his head towards the throne. There’s a leather saddle sitting on the stone. “No tack and bridle huh?” You ask. “Though I suppose you probably won’t need it, will you big guy!” Albatross snorts appreciatively.

“Fishy,” Sree flies up to land on your shoulder, “Where did the pony come from.”

“Heh.” You shake your head as you put the saddle on your new friend. “From the water.”

Tamamo bows. And Albatross, for his part, bows back.

So, that was a thing. What do you intend to do now?

Knight has some different combat stuff than light swordsman.

Basically, LSM gives you a bunch of basic passives and abilities that make you better at fighting. Knight gives you more specific skills that focus on mounted combat and your own code of chivalry.

To take the knight job you must also take a code, and swear to uphold it before a cleric or palladin of some kind. You can do this at home with no difficulty.

As for taking it, I will post something giving more definition to the job system in a bit.

You let out a sigh, stretching before picking up your sword and sliding it onto place on your back. You feel… tired suddenly. Not exhausted or even sleepy, just worn out, like you’ve been focusing on your studies for too long.

“C’mon guys.” You say. “Let’s just finish things off here and go home.” You head back out to the antechamber. The clacking of hooves on stone lets you know that the horse is indeed following you.

The kelpies are already in the vaulted room, looking over the dead bodies. Green hair glances up as you walk in. “Sister!” She says in flowtongue. “We felt our lady’s presence. Did you deal with the intruders?” They all take notice of the horse, but by the looks of it they aren’t going to mention anything.

You smile. “Yeah. I’m guessing you took care of the spiders.”

Blue nods. “After… the sounds of battle ceased, be moved forward and saw… that the room was empty… Then we drove the water spiders out of the temple.”

“Right.” You say. “Well, there are two gaping holes in the wall of the store room down that hallway.” You point. “I think that’s how the merlocks got in.”

“We will… try and fix it.” Blue says.

“Thanks.” You say with a sigh. “Need any help getting rid of the bodies?”

“No.” Green hair says. “Now that the temple is safe our sisters will come and help us repair it.” She glances towards the merlocks lying on the ground. “We would also… appreciate it if you left the water steel here. It is valuable, and we could trade it for supplies to fix the temple.

You shrug, technically the loot is yours, so you suppose you can do what you want with it.

“What about the mermaids?” You ask. “Do you want me to let them know that there’s a temple up here? I imagine if I tell anyone in the city they’ll eventually hear about it.”

“No!” Green shakes her head. “The mermaids have plenty of temples, we would like to keep this one for ourselves and others like us.”

To prevent there from being too many active jobs at once and bogging things down. Here's how the job system works now.

You have a certain number of slots
>1 Physical Combat Slot (LSM, duelist, etc)
>1 Hybrid Slot (spellsword, palladin)
>2 "Magic" Slots (Wizard, enchanter, cleric)
>2 Profession Slots (Tailor, Alchemist, Blacksmith, explorer)
>Any number of special jobs (Tactician, Falconer)

So that's the system I'm running with right now. Cause otherwise I feel like we'd end up with over twenty jobs at some point.

Note: Special jobs are jobs that I say are special, either for plot or because I don't want you having to choose between them and other jobs. So far the only two you have are Falconer and Tactician.

“You can have the lot of it.” You say. “Including the stuff on the brute in the storeroom.” The kelpies smile happily. “Also, Tymera says ‘thank you’ for cleaning the temple.” You add. “She seemed quite happy with you.”

After a moment of surprise, the kelpies all start talking rapidly among themselves you can see that you’ve made their day with that last bit of news. With one last round of goodbyes, you leave the temple, heading down the other fork in the path this time. Soon enough you’re outside.

All that’s left to do is head back to Reiln and turn in your job.

You swim across the river, and the pull out your map making supplies (your belt pouch, for any that didn’t realize it, is waterproof of course). You quickly redraw a new and slightly better map that omits the location of the temple.

Sree carries Tamamo back across easily, since the water is rather deep and fast. But Albatross is going to have to swim it just like you.

Or at least, that’s what you think until he prances happily across the water, with nary a hoof sinking beneath the flow. The three of you stare. “So that’s what she meant by ‘as sure footed on water as on land’?” You mutter. You shake your head and stand, it’s not the strangest thing that’s happened today.

“Okay, let’s just get out of here then.”

You contemplate the river for a second, if Albatross and can run on water… but no.

Best learn how to actually ride the horse before you do something so potentially suicidal. Well, more suicidal than just riding a horse in general, what with how you granddaughter Sarah broke her shoulder that one time.

“Okay… so…” This can’t be too hard. You place one foot in the stirrup and then swing your leg over, practically jumping up onto the horse. Albatross is huge, so much larger than you think horses are when you used to see them on TV.

You grasp the saddle pommel tightly for a moment, before relaxing when Albatross doesn’t even attempt to buck you off. Quite the opposite, actually, he seems to be staying perfectly still so that you can get accustomed to your new position in life.

Sree, as proactive as ever, flies up to land on your shoulder. “Much higher here!” She says approvingly. You roll your eyes.

“Can you help Tamamo get up Sree?” You ask

“N-n-nani!?” Tamamo, who was looking at the horse with a mixture of awe and fear, starts to scramble backwards. But as she turns to run Sree salutes with one wing, “Okay!” And she’s already off.

Now, Tamamo might be hard for you to see, even in the day, but Sree has a raptors eyes, and plucks the fleeing little fox off the ground without any difficulty to deposit her right in your lap.

Tamamo freezes up, latching onto the pommel with both hands as Sree flaps higher, circling overhead. You figure she’ll be able to keep up. “Right.” You say, with an undaunted grin. “Let’s get back home shall we?”

“Iie-iie! No! Stop!” Tamamo babbles, but you wrap one arm around her waist, pulling her back against you.

“Hey.” You say. “Calm down, Albatross will make sure neither of us gets hurt. Right Alby?”

He snorts, front hoof pawing at the ground. After a moment, you realize that he's laughing.

Oh gods what have you done.

You were not, by any stretch of the imagination, born in the saddle. But, perhaps, you were born to ride.

It’s not… easy, but by the same token, it’s not all that much harder than driving a car was, for the first time. After his initial canter, which drew a scream from both you and Tamamo, Albatross slows down to a walking pace.

After you get your balance back, and get the hang of having really nothing to hold on to (maybe you can see about getting him a bridle that doesn’t have a bit? You’d feel much more comfortable that way), you ease him into a light trot.

Before you know it, you’re back home. Also, it’s about five in the evening, so by all accounts it’s been a long day.

The guard on duty gives you a look as you ride back in on a stallion. “Okay, shoo’. Once, with the fox ‘n all, that I can deal with. But where did you get tha’ horse?!”

You smile, and turn in your map. “Found him.” You say. “Also, took care of the bandit camp earlier today, everything else is clear up to the crest.”

“ ‘N what about tha’ other thing you were gonna take a look at?”

You shrug. “Turned out to be nothing. I found Albatross here on the way back.”

“Already named him huh?” The guard says, signing off on your payment and giving you your two gold pieces. “I guess tha’ means you won’t be willing ta sell ‘im eh?”
“Not a chance.” You take the gold happily. “I feel like he’d object anyway.”

The guard eyes the horse. “A horse. Object…” The he shrugs. “Sure, whateva’ floats your boat.”

“Have a good one!” You say. Waving as you and your friends head into town.

Where to next.

Once you get away from the gate you dismount, helping Tamamo down as you lead Albatross through the streets. “Stay off of the water okay?” You whisper to him. “I don’t want the mermaids trying to confiscate you or anything.”

Of course, you have more fearsome enemies than the mermaids to look forward to, namely, your mother when you try and explain where you found a kitsune and a horse.

All too soon you’re at you house, unfortunately, there’s nothing so telling as a car in the driveway to let you know if your mom is back or not. And this early in the afternoon, she wouldn’t have the need to light any candles.

With a grimace, you lead your friends around the training yard, which is thankfully empty. Let’s see, how do you intend to manage this…

It’s at that moment when Sree, who has been fidgeting more and more as you got closer to home, decides to jump ship. She flaps her wings once and jumps off your shoulder. “Bye Fishy!” She calls. “See you tomorrow!”

“Wait! Come back!” You cast a hand after here. “Don’t leave me here alone! You traitor!”

“Adria?” A voice calls from inside. Oh great, it looks like mom was home after all.

Oh shit! You’re still covered in your bloody tunic! Yeah the water has gotten out some of it, but your still in a shirt drenched with blood! Thinking quickly, you grab some of the firs you left lying behind the house and hold it to your chest.

This was a stupid idea. But your mom has already come outside, and is looking at the three of you (you Tamamo and Albatross) with a bemused expression on her face. “Adria?”

"Adria.” Sylea says. “Who’s this?”

“Ah, so…” You shrug your shoulders. “I went on a scouting quest today and some stuff happened right?”

Her gaze returns to you. “And?”

You flinch. “Well. Um, a lot of stuff happened actually. But first I want to let you know that I’m not hurt at all okay? I am completely and totally fine.”

Your mother’s look sharpens.

“Adria.”

“Yes mom?”

“Drop the pelt please.”

“… Yes mom…”

You drop the pelt, letting it fall away revealing your torn and bloody tunic. “Adria!”

You wince. “Now, I know it looks bad! But I assure you that I’m one hundred percent- Oof!”

The rest of your rebuttal is cut off when your mom almost crashes into you, hands running up and down your sides, trying to discern where the injuries are. You can already see the glow of holy magic building around her like a halo.

“Mom- mom!” you grab Sylea by the shoulders, pushing her back for a moment. “Mom! I’m fine, okay? I drank a potion, and all the injuries are gone, see?”

She looks you over one more time, before pulling you into a hug. “Gods dammit Adria!” She whispers fiercely, “Don’t do that to me!”

“You know.” You say, patting your mother on the back. “You’re the second person to say that to me today. And um… the second one also pretty much claimed to be my mother.”

Your mom pulls back and stares at you. “What?” There isn’t any anger in her voice, just a sort of helpless confusion. You imagine this is what your face looked like when your daughter confessed that she was gay… a different time. But anyway.

“I… uh…” You shake your head. “I found a temple up the river.” You say, quietly. No one should be listening in, but you’d prefer if no one heard you accidentally. “There were a bunch of merlocks there, but I cleared the out. And uh, Tymera showed up.”

“You met… Tymera?” As a paladin of that same goddess, she seems torn between awe and happiness.

“Yeah…” You nod. “She was happy that I cleared all of the monsters out of her temple, so she… gave me Albatross,” You point to the horse. “As a reward.”

Sylea sags slightly, rubbing her hand over her face. “Okay. You met a goddess and she gave you a horse…” She seems a bit… off balance right now. “And you said she wanted you to call her Mother?”

“Mom, actually.” You say. “Tymera was very… laid back?”

Your mom sighs. “And the fox girl?”

Both Tamamo and your mom stiffen at that. “Wha-“

“Plus” you continue on, bulldozing over her attempted questions. “Just look at how adorable she is!” You pick Tamamo up, and hold her at chin level like some kind of life sized doll. You peer at your mother over her twitching ears. “See! And she’s a great cook. So, I decided to snap her up and add her to my Harem before any of the boys grows a brain and catches sight of her!”

“Your… harem…” You mother finishes weakly. “Since when was my daughter building a harem?”

“Oh you know, since Sree and all that.” You smirk at her. And you know, without even looking, that Tamamo is beat red. “See, I figured I should just get started early, you know?”

Sylea catches sight of your smirk and sighs, massaging her temples. “Only you Adria.” She says. “So, you found a horse and a fox girl today, and decided to keep them both. Is that it?”

“Well technically, I’m pretty sure the horse would have followed me home even if I didn’t-”

“I also found an enchanted compass, but that was yesterday, technically. And the day before.”

Your mom sighs as she ushers you and Tamamo into the house. Albatross has to stay outside for now, but you promise to return later with a horse blanket and some oats.

You’re pretty sure that’s what horses like anyway. Not like you’ve ever owned one.

“And what does this compass do?” She asks.

“Technically, it’s supposed to lead me to challenges in order to make me a better adventurer.”

Now that gets your mothers attention. “A compass that leads you into danger?” She hisses. “And I suppose you found this out from experience?”

“No!” You shout, waving your arms back and forth. “No no nonono! There was a letter, see?” You pull the letter, slightly damp and rather wrinkled now, out of your belt pouch and hand it to your mom. She spends a few moments reading it, taking in the carefully penned words and calming down somewhat.

“I actually haven’t followed it yet…” You say when she’s finished. Technically not a lie, you would have investigated the temple anyway as part of the scouting mission.

Sylea stares at you for a moment. “I see.” She says. You can tell she doesn’t believe you. “Let me see this compass.” She hold out her hand. With a shrug, you pull it out and deposit it into her hand.

A hand that is immediately lit up with glowing holy light. The compass, for its part flares brightly before settling down. It remains apparently unaffected by the miracle, and after a moment your mother stops.

“Seems like it isn’t cursed.” She admits, handing it back to you. The metal feels warm to touch. “But before you use it at all, you WILL take it down to the college and get the enchantments looked at. Tonight preferably.”

You nod. “Yes mom! I’ll do that when I’m selling off the rest of my loot!”

She rolls her eyes, but there’s a smile on her face. “Loot. I remember when I called it that.”

You grin. “What, back before you got too old to get any?”

“No.” She says, leaning back in her chair. “After I met your father and started calling it booty.”

You freeze. “I- Uh-” she starts laughing uproariously. “MOOOOOMMM!”

“Comes with the territory dear.” She says. “You’ll understand some day.” Yes, you do understand. But it doesn’t make it any less embarrassing when your mom pulls one over on your regardless.

When it comes to being married, you believe you still have much more experience than your mom does, which is more than a bit weird to think about…

"No that's it for tonight." You say. "But you're okay with Tamamo staying with us right?"

You mom nods. "Of course I am." You smile.

"Well, I'm just gonna go sell the stuff I found today, and pick up some stuff for Albatross. Know where I can do that?"

"Yes. You can talk to the stable hands near the barrack. They should have some extra supplies to sell to you." she says. "Other than that, you can pay someone to come take care of him, or else you just have to learn yourself."

You nod. "Okay, I'm off then!" Tamamo follows in your footsteps as you exit the door.

However, as you walk through the streets, it's not thoughts of money or enchantments that flit through your head, but rather your new steed, and what having him means. Now you know that with a horse, and a goddess's blessing besides, you could become a knight.

There aren't a lot of knights around Reiln, but it's not unheard of. You'd just have to think up your own code of chivalry, and swear to uphold it at a temple. You're not sure if you want to take that job yet, but the options is there.

That said, where do you want to go first?

>The market, gotta sell and buy stuff
>The college, get the compass checked
>The barrack, proper horse care is important

You will hit the other places later

So. If you want to become a Knight, you guys have to draw up a code for Adria to follow.

When following the code, knights have large and wide spanning advantages.
When not taking actions directly related to their code Knights are no slouches either.

A Knight that violates or breaks their code will lose many of their advantages or even lose the job entirely if the violation is severe enough.

Talk about that if you guys wish.

>Maybe pick up the cleric class at some point
Hahaha no
>>
>>40632327
>>40632330
Also, since you're on downtime right now, and can pick up supplies as needed, are there any jobs you want to take or change out?

You currently have
>1 Open Caster Slot
>2 Open Profession Slots

Available jobs are:
Alchemist, Explorer, Archer, Cleric, Tailor, Duelist, Knight

If you want to know which slot a job fits in, I'll let you know.

Add/Drop Jobs?
>Yes(which ones?)
>No

>>40632270
Looks like barracks first it is. In the mean time, writing.
>>
>>40632413
>Tailor
>Explorer
^Thats a profession right?

>Cleric
Its our only other caster option, we might as well
>>
>>40632413
>Cleric
caster
Explorer and Tailor for profession.
>>
>>40632443
Explorer is a profession job.
>>
>>40632413
Profession slots? Also why is there two magic slots when those are used for combat just liek combat slot? If that's the case shouldn't there only be 1 magic one combat or two magic and two combat?
>>
I'm thinking hold off on knight until were comfortably high enough in one of our other jobs?
>>40632413
>Yes
Explorer, we do plan on adventuring, other than that we already have quite a few jobs
>>
>>40632459
Mainly b/c of the hybrid slot, which functions pretty much as just another melee slot.

Most hybrid jobs are more towards the beat face end of things.

If it's bothering you that much I could say only one caster slot.
Of course, you could still drop wizard for cleric, as you have spellsword.

I believe I forgot to mention this earlier, so here it is.

>Inactive jobs don't give you bonuses to rolls.
>>
>>40632413

Cleric does open up the way to paladin later, right?

Add job
>cleric
>explorer

Going to travel eventually.

What bonus do you get if you max a job to level 100?
>>
>>40632413
>Tailor, Explorer
>>
>>40632459
Profession slots are jobs like Taylor and Alchemist and Scribe. Jobs that are not related to combat and mostly focus on making things.
>>
>>40632496
But we keep perks like Monkey Grip right?
>>
>>40632496
Just worried about the HOLY ORDER fag's really....Don't want this to turn into another "Holy" quest...
>>
>>40632512
Level one hundred jobs give you access to their Max level skill. For most combat based jobs, this is a game ending ability that can pull defeat from the jaws of victory, or crush otherwise difficult foes.

>>40632523
Perks (which are part of skills) you keep. You also keep spells you learned, say imbue or lightning bolt for wizard. But you won't get a bonus for casting them unless you do it the spellsword way.
>>
>>40632554
Did I really... fuck
>Pull defeat from the jaws of victory.
Victory from the jaws of defeat...

Also, been thinking about what one anon said, and in the interest of balance, I'm going to change things so you only have one caster slot. You can still trade that out for cleric if you want.
>>
>>40632575
Kay, S'fine with me, Makes it more balanced really
>>
>>40632575

Keep wizard then, push it and learn more spells, since it will synergize with spell sword for a while

can swap out later.
>>
>>40632443
>>40632413
Changing vote to just:
>Tailor
>Explorer
>>
I kind of want to say alchemist, but alchemist and Tailor can be done at different times, and then we can do all the exploding and healing. or someone we know can do the all the exploding and healing. really I just want explosions
>>
>>40632575
Keep wizard
Tailor and Explorer
>>
>>40632270
You make your way towards the barracks, deciding to get the most important thing out of the way first. After all, Albatross is a gift from a goddess, you’d hate to see what Tymera would do to punish you for not taking good care of him.

She’d either go full fire and brimstone, or just embarrass you in front of the whole city. Or both… you hold back a shiver.

After you reach the stables and pull aside a stable hand its quick work to figure out how to take care of a horse. Feed him this much every day, though you can just take him grazing, would probably be better for him.

He also need to be brushed, if you take him running you need to rub him down, make sure to have a blanket and never leave him out in the rain. So on and so forth.

Thanking him with a few copper pieces, you buy a blanket and some feed, which you can come back for later.

You’re starting to feel a bit weighed down so you decide to head to the market next and sell all the furs to a tanner. The lot of them, (plus the bed rolls that you practically have to pay for someone to take of your hands) net you four silver.

You’re up to 3 gold, 3 silver and 3 copper. Heh. If you want to take the tailor job, you’ll need, at the very least, a needle and thread. The Explorer job (from what you’ve heard) mandates that you have a bed roll, a backpack, and a flint and steel. Everything else is up to you.

What do you want to buy? The ‘essentials’ will take six silver pieces.

>Cloth to practice with and scissors (2 silver for a bought of cheep fabric)
>More explorer supplies (a lantern, a tent, ect)
>Potions? Anything for your other jobs?
>Write in

I’ll okay or say no to write ins as necessary, but you can buy most basic things at the market.
>>
>>40632789
>Cloth to practice with and scissors (2 silver for a bought of cheep fabric)
>More explorer supplies (a lantern, a tent, ect)
>>
>>40632805
I do need you to say which explorer supplies.
Available ones are:
Lantern, Tent, More bed rolls (for your friends), a better waterproof bag, a sextant (warning expensive), and some other things.
I'll let you know prices and availability of these items as asked.

>>40632789
>Cloth to practice with and scissors (2 silver for a bought of cheep fabric)
>More explorer supplies (a lantern, a tent, ect)
>Magical focus for wizard and spellsword
>Holy Item for Cleric of Tymera
>heal potions, wakefulness potions(aka coffee), Potions of spell resistance.
>spyglass.
>>
>>40632789
>>More explorer supplies (a lantern, a tent, ect)

Replacement regen potion

>>40632850
Why do we need another spyglass
>>
>>40632789
>More explorer supplies Tent a flint and steel if we dont have one. Friends bed rolls.
>Cloth to practice with and scissors (2 silver for a bought of cheep fabric)
Do we even know how to use a sextant?
> a regen potion
>>
>>40632789
>>Cloth to practice with and scissors (2 silver for a bought of cheep fabric)

>>More explorer supplies (a lantern, a tent, ect)

Need a lantern of some sort
A tent. Tent pools too.
Normal compass.
Bed Rolls for everyone.
Good Waterproof bag.

Good set of waterproof saddle bags too
>>
>>40632850
>You already have a spyglass.
>Focuses cost more than you have right now, and are best bought at the college.
>A simple river rock pendant will suffice for a holy item, though you can by a better one.
>Health potions cost 2 gold, regeneration elixirs cost 5 silver. You have one regen elixer remaining.

>>40632883
You could learn, but no you don't know how.
>>
>>40632898
Argen, how much would a bridle for our horse cost?
>>
>>40632789
Alright, so far I'm seeing consensus for
>Scissors and cloth
>The essentials
>More exploring supplies which include:
A lantern, A tent set, A normal compass, Waterproof bag, and bedrolls.
>One Regen Potion

The full list will bring you down to...

1g 0s 5c

Or 0g 9s 5c if you want the water proof saddle bags as well.

You don't really need water proof saddle bags, as Albatross will never actually need to swim but I can throw those in if you guys want.

This good?
>Y/N

>>40632959
A copper, you picked one up from the saddle boy. Just forgot to mention it.

Whether he'll let you put it on him is a different story.

Calling it for no water proof bags and writing.
I'll update the character sheet before the end of the thread hopefully.

One last errand to run.
>>
>>40633294
By that I mean no water proof saddle bag.
>>
>>40632789
You end up returning home to drop off your purchases. Tamamo is really helpful in that regards, carrying a bag and a lot of the smaller items so that you don’t end up dropping anything. After that, and a friendly reminder from your mom, you head over the college.

Though, not before you try and convince Albatross to let you use bridle (after you removed the bit of course) he remains, sadly, unconvinced.

With your wallet lighter, but not quite as bad as it was this morning, you go and see some magic experts about your special compass. The normal one you left at home.

====
“This is amazing!” Arnstein is getting way to into the compass. Maybe you should have brought the normal one instead.

“Really?” You ask. With one hand you quiet Tamamo, who looks a bit nervous with how Arnstein is poking at the compass (where the tiny spirit lives) with a vast array of magical artifacts as he scrutinizes it. “What’s so special about it?”

“I-I don’t where to start!” He says. “First of all this is the most complex enchantment I’ve ever seen woven. You said that the letter claimed that several wizards worked together on this?”

You nod.

“I don’t believe it!” He proclaims. “it must have taken at least fifty- no, a hundred enchanters of expert skill or higher just to work out the designs! As for weaving it? I have no idea how they got this many flows together, or empowered it. And power! That’s another thing!” He shakes his head, long beard swaying back and forth. “Whoever put this together made a traveling locus that keeps the enchantment fully charged! Not only does it means the enchantment will never run out of power, but that seems to be how the compass determines suitable locations to lead its holder to.”

[1/2]
>>
>>40633621
You blink. “So… it taps into leylines?” You formal magical education wasn’t all too in depths, but it’s enough for Arnsteins watered down explanation.

“More than that my dear.” He says with a grin. “This compass essentially creates its own set of leylines that flow naturally into the existing ones. If such a connection could be harnesses in other ways, you could use it to map the continent, or perhaps even the entire world!”

“Okay…” You say. “That is pretty amazing.”

“Yes. Yes it is.” He nods, before closing the lid of the compass and handing it back to you. “I would pay you a thousand gold for that compass, but I’m afraid that’s immaterial.”

“Hmm? Why’s that?”

“The compass is meant to be used, my girl.” He says. “If it’s left inert, or in the hands of one who doesn’t want to ‘adventure’ the enchantments become inactive, a prudent measure actually to prevent the artificial locus from damaging the actual lei lines.”

“What?” You glance at the compass warily. “I thought you said it was harmless!”

“Oh it is my dear it is!” He says. “As long as you don’t keep it in the same place for two long it’s completely harmless. In fact, even if you were to adventure with a single city as your staging ground it wouldn’t begin to adversely affect the lei lines for at least a year, and even then it would cause no lasting harm.” He grins, marveling at the device once more. “But this little miracle was designed to last for centuries! Indeed, even if you were to live out your entire natural life following this compass, you could pass it to your children, and it would lead them just as surely as it did you. Truly, what you have there is a masterwork.”

He looks you in the eyes.

“I can only imagine what impossible places it might take you.”

yesss, at the height of your power, FALL to hubris and typos!

>>40633635
That's some pretty good fluff for a constant plot-pointing device. No, really. It's a bit ham-handed in how good it is, without putting limits on how often you can use it in a day, and how conveniently easy it is to keep safe as a compass, but the item itself is pretty damn cool.

Damn this thread was full of meta
