You stare at the cart for a few moments before channeling your vys. The ice that made up most of the construction vanishes in an instant, several hundred pounds of hide and corpses crashing to the ground with a thunderous cacophony. After the dust has settled you create a few dozen golems from ice, having them work together to lift each individual hide and carry it inside. You end up needing several more to deal with the corpses and trophies you took.

Whilst directing the efforts of your golems you realize that a crowd has gathered, both within the Academy grounds and without. You see guardsmen, children, and citizens both high class and craning their heads over the Academy's walls to get a glimpse at your catch. Is it really that big a deal? They're just some hides. The bastard wasn't even all that hard to kill.

Regardless with the help of your golems you manage to offload both the hides and the corpses. You have them carry both through the grand double doorways into the Academy foyer, then lead the grand procession through the building. Of course, your grand procession leaves the floors coated in blood but that's not really your concern. You assume this place has a cleaning staff and if not a few apprentices ought to be more than capable of cleaning up your mess.

You stop outside the doorway to the faculty dormitories, having some of your golems split off and follow you up to your rooms. There is some difficulty in getting the giant monster's corpse through the doors but you manage it. Both corpses are deposited in your bath, where the blood will be able to drain, with the dragon being placed on top of unknown monster. That done you dispel the golems you had helping you carry the corpses and return to the rest of the procession, to deliver the seven hides to Aylin.

Nobody tries to stop you when you have your minions bust in the door to the student dormitories, bearing you aloft on one of the fluffy hides you cut away from the creature. The fur really is quite remarkable, very thick along the spine but even the downy undercoat is quite delightful. The hides themselves are several centimeters thick in some places, and would probably make quite fine leather.

When one of your frozen figurines kicks open the door to the girl's half of the dormitories you're greeted by a chorus if surprised screams, which quickly turn into muttered confusion as you're carried inside. You hope Aylin's actually in her room, or otherwise this will all look rather unnecessary. You have your golems carry you to the room you recall she was placed in, and once there roll off the fur which you'd been using as a litter of sorts.

You're about to raise your fist to knock on the door when a woman's voice draws your attention. Petulantly she shouts “You can't be in here! This is the girl's dormitory!”

You glance in her direction to find the very picture of indignance staring back at you, her hands on her hips and a scowl on her face. She strikes you as tall for a human woman, perhaps six feet or slightly under, and she's dressed strangely; in what you might best describe as tribal garb. She's managed to shoulder her way past the procession of your golems and in the process has gotten blood absolutely all over herself. You suppose if nothing else it took bravery to oppose you, she's the first person to do so.

With a sardonic grin you deliver your reply. “Really? The dormitory you say? Well here I was on my way to the shitter, I must have gotten turned around.”

She folds her arms across her chest, leaning her weight back on one foot. As she opens her mouth to reply you wave a hand dismissively, a sheet of ice forming beneath on the ground beneath her and robbing of her of her footing. Her feet shoot out from beneath her, and in short order she falls flat on her back.

That problem taken care of you knock thrice on Aylin's door. There's a brief moment where you think this might have all been for naught, and then the door opens to reveal the girl herself. At first she's confused, but then her eyes alight on the hides you've brought her.

You present your gifts with an elaborate flourish of your arm. “I recalled that you wished to decorate your room with the hide of a great beast, so I thought I'd go out and procure one for you. Now, while I was out I recalled that it can get rather cold in the winter this far North so I thought I'd get you a blanket as well, and then I thought wouldn't a nice rug really pull the room together... well, this is the result.”

She approaches the nearest hide, born by four golems made of ice, and runs her fingers through the fur. She gasp at the softness of it, exclaiming excitedly. “They're flawless! How on Earth did you manage to kill six gargoyles without even bruising their hides? Not even our greatest hunters could've accomplished such a feat!”

So they're called gargoyles, eh? An odd name. Must be local, because it certainly isn't Rhynian. Still, she seems to be under a bit of a misconception regarding your competence as a hunter...

You raise an eyebrow. “Six gargoyles? No, no. That would be far too much effort. I imagine they're mountain dwellers judging by their fur and the mountains are at least a day away from Anthus. Plus if they're solitary creatures, as you say, hunting down six of them would prove a daunting task. I merely killed one and skinned it six times, for convenience's sake. I didn't want to leave you waiting for your gift.”

She looks at you, face scrunched in confusion, and then at the six gargoyle pelts. “Wait...” She shakes her head. “How is that possible? How could you skin an animal six times? That doesn't make any sense.”

You wiggle your fingers in her direction, adopting an air of mysticism. “Magic!” You declare, as if the answer ought to be obvious. While you have her attention, you point to the last golem in the procession, the one with the leathery hide of the dragon the gargoyle killed slung over its shoulder. “I also got you a dragon hide, I figure after what happened to your village you'd enjoy having the skin of one of those beast hanging on your walls. A reminder that they can be killed.”

She walks down the procession of golems, running her fingers through the fur of each identical hide. The girl who was bothering you earlier has stormed off in a black rage, so you clear away the patch of ice so that Aylin doesn't slip. She stops at the last golem and carefully picks up the dragon's hide, running her fingers along its surface. Small nubs of what might be the beginnings of scales coat the hide, you imagine the dragon was fairly young. “This hide will make a fine pair of boots. I will enjoy treading constantly upon a dragon's corpse.”

You hadn't really thought of it like that, but sure. It works you suppose. She drapes the dragon's hide over the last golem in the procession and walks back down the line to wrap her arms around your waist, burying her face in your chest. You return the gesture, and after a few long moments she separates. “Thank you, Mikhael. I do not know why you've been so kind to me. You saved my life, you brought me here. Now you've given me a gift more suitable as a royal dowry.”

She wraps you up in another hug, and you pat her affectionately on the head. She doesn't seem put off by the blood coating your clothing, but you suppose that's to be expected from someone raised in her culture. She sniffs loudly, and you notice tears staining your shirt. Adopting what you hope is a soothing tone you attempt to comfort her. “Oh come now, it was really nothing. I saw you being attacked and I stepped in, anyone would've done the same. Then it's not like I could just leave someone wandering alone in the middle of the plains with dragons on the prowl.”

She pushes away from you, wiping her eyes with her sleeve. Taking in a handful of deep, calming breaths she pulls herself together, but only just. “It's been an emotional few days. My mother abandoned me, my father was killed. I apologize. I'm not usually like this.”

You wave her off. “No, no. I understand. Everyone has those moments. Now then, how about we stop blocking up the hallway and we figure out where these pelts are going to go in your room?”

You have the procession start to file through her doorway, but it quickly become clear that you're not going to be able to fit six pelts in that tiny dorm. You could fit one on the floor, and one on her bed. Maybe she could turn another pelt into a cloak or something of the like. However, it would truly be hard to justify giving her more than three of the gargoyle pelts.

Vys oversaturation, the thing that prevents us from using the 10 vys per hour producing armor, is caused by having too much Vys in our body. With the ring to eat the excess, we'll be all set. You have a team of golems lower one of the remaining furs and then lounge on top of it, directing them to carry you out of the dorms. It doesn't take you long to reach your own rooms, though you very nearly slide off the top of the hide you're laying on whilst having your golems bear you up the stairs. Honestly, lying down on the hide while attempting to climb the stairs was just a bad idea.

Once you reach your rooms you have the furs deposited on top of the corpses of the gargoyle and the dragon. Then you wash off your hands, and glance down at yourself. Your clothes would be ruined, were you not a Water Vatis. As is you could probably wash them out with a little effort. You reach briefly into your bag to drain the ruby pendant, only then realizing that you're still wearing the stone sleeve. It hasn't grown, but you still pull it off and deposit it on your bed.

You can actually reach it from the faculty dormitories by just going down a floor, something you've only just now realized. You exit into a somewhat crowded hallway, students chatting idly amongst yourself. Conversation stills as you emerge from the faculty dorms, a whisper running through the crowd.

Someone's playing the drums, and you hear some sort of stringed instrument. The music is nearly drowned out by the sounds of who knows how many teenagers shouting and talking and stomping about.
