You are Louise du Petit-Thouars, a well off young lady in late 19th century Paris. In spite, or perhaps because of your life of privilege, you grew fascinated with theft. With two succesful thefts committed, you've decided to attend a week long art exposition in Strassburg under a false name. Last night you enjoyed the hospitality of the aristocratic Prussian General Siegfried von Oberhausen. The man is well-mannered, but it's clear that he has an eye on you. Perhaps you can make good use of that.

You have taken some time to wander around the exposition with your new boyfriend(?) and your eyes fell on the eyes of the great German impressionist Karl Haussmann. Preparing for your theft, and seeking to exploit the hot weather, you have bought some opium to spike the water supply of the guards at the exposition with. With all your preparations made, you decide to return to the exposition one last time to buy a painting for your father, which is the excuse you used to attend the exposition in the first place.

At the exposition, you take your time to...
>Buy your father a painting and nothing else
>Buy your father a painting and steal one of Karl Haussman's paintings (+2 DC for not having a proper escape route at the ready, another +2 DC for being in a crowded area)
>Buy your father a painting and [write-in]

Right now the DC for the theft is 18
-2 for knowing the general layout
-2 For being an outdoor exposition
-2 for experience
+2 for tight security
+2 for not being able to instantly store the loot in a secure place (like your own home)

Using the opium reduces it to 16 for a theft later that night, stealing right now increases it to its max (20), which means only a nat 20 will save you.

Some rules and other affairs of note:
>Louise is an educated woman, and therefore assumed to be fluent in French, Spanish, Italian, English and German
>Louise is affluent, it is assumed that she can afford most services and purchases
>The campaign is semi-historical: the campaign will take place somewhere between 1880 and 1900, but some minor facts or persons may be changed
>Automobiles exist, but are not widely available. Louise does not possess one.

>When a roll is required, the best roll of the first three will be picked
>Rolling a 20 means automatic success, rolling a 1 means automatic failure. They do not cancel each other out
>The standard DC for the theft of a prominent treasure is 20, this means that only a natural 20 will result in a successful theft
>There are many factors that can increase or decrease the DC for a theft, a non-exclusive list will follow

Bonuses:
>Familiarity with or blueprints of the location (-2 DC)
>Gained the trust of a minor key figure such as a guard (-2 DC) or a major key figure such as the captain of the guard or the victim himself (-4 DC) (Non-cumulative)
>The theft is committed while the treasure to be stolen is being transported (-2 DC)
>The theft is committed while the treasure to be stolen is outside of Europe * (-2 DC)

Penalties:
>A major key figure knows Louise and has reason to suspect or dislike her (+4 DC)
>The treasure to be stolen has been stored in a vault, safe or other such secure location (+2 DC)
>The treasure cannot be carried away inconspicuously and no appropriate measures to transport the treasure to a safe place have been taken (+2 DC)

*Colonial and indigenous authorities are presumed to be less motivated and easier to bribe

You wander around a bit with Siegfried, looking for a few paintings made by the amateurs. You also keep a close eye on the guards, trying to figure out where they get their food and drinks from. You notice that there are large barrels of water near the entrance, from which the guards occassionally retrieve a cup to quench their thirst. You don't know where their food comes from.

After a while, you find a painting you think looks nice, with a landscape and a castle in the background. "This one?" asks Siegfried. "Is this the one you want?"

You enthusiastically nod your head. "Yes, I'm sure! Papa is a sucker for nice landscapes." That's actually true, so technically you're not lying.

You pay for the painting and hand it over to Philippe. The young artist thanks you for your patronage in a Bavarian accent so thick, for a moment you think he's speaking a different language. "This is great, thank you miss! Wow, I can't believe I actually sold a painting! Thank you so much!"

You have bought what you pretended to come for and you know where the guards keep have their water. You decide to spend the rest of the day:

>Wandering around the exposition, there's something else you'd like to find out [write-in]

After your purchase, you decide to call it a day for now. You've seen enough, and you fulfilled your feigned objective. Now it's time to set your plan in motion. You have to start by securing a way out for your stolen painting, and a plausible excuse. You turn to your trusty butler, 'Alfred'. "Alfred, you will bring this painting to Papa tonight, right?" You quickly wink at him.

Your servant nods. "Of course madame. I'll go as soon as you want me to."

You stay around Siegfrieds residence until the early evening, after which you order Philippe to leave. You tell Siegfried the lie that you're accompanying him. Once you're outside, you explain your plan to him. "First of all I'm going to spike the guards' water supply. When they're dazed, we're taking Haussmann's magnum opus. You take that and Papa's painting back to Paris for me, understood?"

Philippe smiles. "You're starting to get better and better at this."

After a while you arrive at the exposition grounds, now abandoned by all save the guards. It's time to make your move

Correct. I'm afraid that this will go on forever if I don't end it. This will be our last theft, and after that I'll try to set up a good epilogue.

As for a future quest, someone in the previous thread proposed something I'm not exactly averse to. He proposed that, under the condition that Siegfried and Louise end up together, we could play the next campaign as their son.

I'm not sure what their son would do exactly, but I had some WWI campaign in mind on the African front, with the son of Siegfried and Louise leading a small group of light cavalry. Of course, this son would've learned some of his mothers... tricks.

But I'm not entirely sure, this is just speculation. Anything could happen.

You wait for the guards by the entrance to walk away, deeper into the palissaded exposition grounds, to sneak by and spike their water barrels with opium. After that you hurry back to Philippe's side and hide behind some trees, watching and waiting. The humid weather is on your side, as many guards make their way to the water barrels to get something to drink. It's about an hour later when you see the guards at the entrance collapse. You decide it's time to strike.

Wandering through the exposition grounds, you can't help but notice how many paintings there are. You keep your eyes on the prize however and go for the largest and most expensive looking Haussmann painting in there. It's so large that it takes both you and Philippe to carry it, but you judge that it could just fit in Philippe's cart. As the two of you carry the painting back to the cart, you almost trip over the body of a guard, awakening him. He looks up at you with a drowsy look and smiles. You decide to just smile back and continue on your merry way until you've reached the cart. It looks like this theft was succesful. You start wondering if you could get away with stealing more. The guards are still afflicted by the spiked water. Or perhaps you should just quit while you're ahead.

As tempting as it may be, you decide to leave things be for now. You've got one painting, that's enough of a thrill. You don't want to push your luck and end up in prison or even executed. You instead instruct Philippe on what to do, starting by handing him a white sheet. "Make sure you cover your cart with this, then go straight for Paris. You need to be far away from Strassburg before anyone catches on. You should be safe when you cross the border, but don't stop until you're in Paris just to be on the safe side."

Philippe nods. "I'll wait for you in your residence then, madame." With that he leaves and you're free to make your way back to the Von Oberhausen mansion, where you enjoy a good meal and get some sleep.

The next morning you hear loud laughter coming from the dining hall. When you get there, you see Siegfried, in tears from laughter, reading the newspaper. Some chuckling maids and butlers are peeking over his shoulders, reading along with him. "Marie, good morning! You should really see this!" he hands you the newspaper.

>"Haussmann masterpiece stolen, guards clueless!"

The article describes that one of Haussmanns greatest works has been stolen from the exposition in Strassburg. Nobody knows exactly what happened, but all guards were found dazed, and only one guard claims to have actually seen anything. The interview is silly enough to make you chuckle a little as well.

>"I saw it clearly with my own eyes! There were two Portuguese goats, a man and a woman! One of them was wearing a blue dress, I'm absolutely sure! It sounds unbelievable, but I'm 100% sure I saw two goats!"

The article then continues to state that the exposition will be closed due to safety concerns, and that the local police will investigate whether or not alcohol abuse has played a part in the neglicence of the guards.

Siegfried dries his tears. "We were lucky that we bought your dads painting yesterday, huh? One more day and you'd have come here for nothing."

>>
>>40698958
You smile. "Yeah, or we would've been mugged by goats. Goat-mugging is a fate worse than death, isn't it?"

>Stay with Siegfried for a while, husbando it up

The above choices were actually planned for the epilogue. Since this quest is just going to continue, the above won't mean the end of the quest. We're going through.

It takes a while for everyone to catch their breath, but eventually everyone recovers. Siegfried asks you what you plan to do. "Now that's the exposition is closed, where will you go from here. Back to France?"

After the tiring planning of your theft and executing it, you decide you can afford yourself a little down time. Besides, you're starting to enjoy Siegrieds company. "Maybe I'll stay here for a few more days, if you can find some fun things to do around here."

Siegfried grins. "Don't you know me yet? Anything's fun with me around."

That afternoon, he takes you out for a picnic along the banks of the Rhine, the mighty river that once divided France and the German territories, until Alsace fell into German hands. You can see that you're not the only one, as many upper class families have decided to enjoy the relative coolness being close to this river brings.

Siegfried lies down in the grass, seemingly relaxed, until he asks a rather shocking question. "Marie, do you have any suitors?"

This is a rather straightforward question. You start thinking about your previous 'suitors'. You never really had any, which is why your father sent you to Paris in the first place. He was hoping you could mingle with the upper class and find a man to your liking. Instead you used this time away from him to expand your art collection. There's Victor Frézier, but you mostly consider your flirting with him a means to an end.

"No, not at the moment. Why? Are you planning to become one?" you flash him an impish smile.

Victor gazes at the river in front of him, watching how it calmly flows and seeing some of the children playing in the water. "I've had fun with you these past few days. I'd like to know you better, maybe even make you my wife one day."

Did he just say he wants to make you his wife in the future? You were playing it cool up until now, but this is just too straightforward for you. "Y-your wife?! But we've only known eachother for a few days! D-don't be so silly, we're moving way too fast!"

Siegfried moves closer to you and lies down in your lap. You can feel the blood rushing to your cheeks as he looks at you. "What's wrong? Getting cold feet? I thought you liked me."

"I-I do! It's just... you're so pushy..." you're feeling embarassed. How can this overconfident nobleman make you feel so flustered, so vulnerable?

He smiles "We can take some small steps. Try cleaning my ears for starters."

Cleaning his ears? What a request. And yet, you can't help but oblige him. You start cleaning his ears and look around you. You see some elderly couples smiling at you and some children giggling. "Siegfried, let's stop. Everyone's looking at us. I bet they think we're a couple!"

"We are a couple, aren't we?" mumbles Siegfried. "Why not act like one?"

You try to enjoy the rest of the day as much as you can, which proves to be rather difficult considering how much Siegfried keeps teasing you. When you take the coach back to Strassburg, Siegfried asks you for your future plans. "What are you going to do tomorrow?"

You spend one last night at the Von Oberhausen residence before leaving for the nearest train station. However, you discover that currently there are no trains bound for Paris, and you can't get any information on why. As such, you decide to take a coach back to your city.

When the coach enters your residential area, on the outskirts of the city, you notice that the mood is very tense. The coach is stopped by a group of soldiers and their leading officer opens the door to speak to you.

"Miss, do you live here?" he asks. You nod to confirm this. "We recommend that you get home as soon as possible and remain indoors until further notice."

Looks like the vote is pretty conclusive.
>>
So if the Rebels are going to be a major thing, should we try to get in good with them as our thief persona?

"Yessir!" you reply. It's best to at least appear cooperative for now. "But what's going on? Did something happen?"

The officer sighs. "You've heard of the uprisings we've had lately, haven't you? Turns out they finally succeeded. Ninethousand of them stormed the presidential palace, and if president Grévy hadn't escaped the city they would've probably killed him. They call themselves the Revolution of the Ninethousand. The capital is now pure chaos, the few forces loyal the the Republic are here on the outskirts to hold the line. Please go inside and wait until it's over. Reinforcements will arrive from the south before long."

Bribe them with one of the statues we don't have (they're still in the ground on the outskirts of Toulon, remember?)

1. Offer to help
2. Figure out who's in charge
3. Do a 360 and moonwalk back to Germany
>>
>>40701034
by bailing i mean grab everything of value we have(treasure included) , and just move places for good
>>
>>40701122
Let's not go that far, anon. Get in and grab some stuff, maybe, but not move permanently.

Revolutions are not usually kind on rich folk

i`m just being paranoid here
>>
You don't have time for this political bull. You're going home to make sure everything is secure, getting Philippe and going back to Germany to sit this one out. Maybe you can even find some other interesting stuff to steal there. You could even make a very risky move and confess everything to Siegfried. If you play your cards right, he might make a valuable ally. Play a wrong hand and it might mean ending everything you've built up with him. You say your goodbyes to the officer and continue on your way home.

There you see that the windows have been locked and boarded. When you get inside, Philippe greets you with worry. "Madame, it's good to see you're alright! Did you hear about the revolution?"

"I'm fine, Philippe" you reply calmly. "Make sure the vault is securely shut, lock all the doors and windows. We're going back to Germany, and we're not coming back until everything is safe." Your butler obeys your orders and before long, you're on your way back.

Siegfried is pleasantly surprised by your return, but understands your reasoning. "You're probably back because of the instability, right? I've just heard about it. You're free to stay as long as you need."

You make yourself comfortable in the von Oberhausen residence once more and pick up a newspaper to see if there's anything interesting to steal in Germany. Your eye falls on the headline...

>"German archeologists find Trojan death masks"
>"Czar sends Kaiser gift as a sign of goodwill"
>Pick something to steal later, confess everything to Siegfried first
>Write-in

>>40701122
The other vote was temporary. Let's just keep it as is for now and we might permanently stay here in the future.

It may be very difficult, but you feel like you need to be open with Siegfried. He has been open about his intentions to make you his bride, so you think you could at the very least be honest with him. You visiti him in one of the rooms of the residence, one that very much looks like an office. He finishes signing a document before adressing you. "Marie? Is something wrong?"

You don't exactly know where to start, so you fiddle around a little before actually saying what you want to say. "Do you have any hobbies, Siegfried?"

He raises an eyebrow. "Yes? I'm interested in art and I like to hunt once in a while. Why?"

It's hard to form the right words but you keep pushing on. "You see, I also have certain hobbies. I like to collect art... sometimes not entirely through legal means." You can feel yourself getting flustered. You fear the outburst that may follow.

"Not through entirely legal means? You mean through poachers and smugglers? Illegal auctions?"

You shake your head. "Sometimes I like to just... take things. Like two days ago, when I took one of the Haussmann paintings." You have no idea how Siegfried will react to this.

Siegfried gets up from his chair and puts his hands on his desk, leaning forward with an incredulous look on his face. "I've let you into my house and you stole a priceless German painting from the Kaisers most beloved artist? Right under the nose of one of his generals?"

This is the moment you fear. You stutter and trip over your words in an attempt to justify. "D-don't look at it like that! It's just... It's just... you like the thrill of the hunt, right? T-this is just my own way of hunting?"

You can see Siegfried walking towards you. You tense up and close your eyes. You expect pain. A slap, a punch or maybe even a kick. What you didn't expect was a soft kiss on the lips. You shudder and step back in surprise, breaking the kiss.

"You're amazing! How did you even do that? Right under my nose too! You're like one of those gentleman thieves from adventure novels, except you're a lady! Marie, you're unbelievable."

"Louise... it's actually Louise" you mumble.

The general pats you on the head. "You even prepared a false identity. I want to see you in action, you know that? Can I join you on your next... hunt?"

>End of part 8

Today you stole a painting and gained a husbando, so this looks like a good place to end it for now. Maybe the two of you can make Europe unsafe together, like Bonnie and Clyde except more classy.

In the next post I will explain what's in store for this quest and eventual future quests. Please follow me on Twitter to stay up to date:

The future of this quest is probably what you're most interested in right now. You guys seem to be more enthusiastic about this quest than I thought, so I'll keep it alive for the forseeable future. As usual I will start threads on tuesday and friday unless something comes up. Keep an eye on twitter for that.

I however also wanted to start a new quest. As a compromise, I think I'll schedule in a third quest slot for my "side quest" on sunday. This side quest will be run once a week and be completely independent of the main quest. I haven't really thought of a subject yet but I thought a quest about a yandere trying to get with her senpai while eliminating her rivals might be fun.

In short:
>Thief Quest on tuesday and friday
>Yandere Quest on sunday
>>
And of course a big thank you to everyone for playing and showing so much interest in this quest.

You're welcome guys.

And actually I was planning on using a Japanese high school full of anime stereotypes and vaguely supernatural elements as the setting. What would be some settings you'd like? Some brainstorming can't hurt.

Then again, it's also completely possible that I decide to run an entirely different side quest come sunday. Yandere Quest is just what sounds like a cool idea right now.
