You look around this strange land you've wandered into. That mountain has a face. The SUN has a face... and seems to be laughing, at that. Did... did you bump your head on something? No, Goku, brobro, Chi-chi, Krillin, and even Pilaf's group seem perplexed by this new place. You would think this is something you'd be able to read about in your history books, but... what is going ON here?

"Sis... I don't think we're in West City anymore." your brother comments.

"Gee, what gave you that impression, Acer, the greener surroundings or the... giant... walking... poo..." Krillin tries to snark at him, but stops as he sees exactly that.

"AAAHHH! GET ME OUT OF HERE, GET ME OUT OF HERE!" Pilaf starts screaming, pulling at Goku's clothes and face.

"Calm down! Hey, stop that!" the monkey boy shouts as he struggles to keep Pilaf in his grip. Pilaf manages to slip out of Goku's grip and goes falling to the ground, the dog man in his other arm falling but your brother swiftly catching him. Quickly, the monkey boy chases after the blue imp... but also crashes right into the walking pink poo. It... pulls him out of itself and says that was rude. Both Goku and Pilaf stink horribly, to the disgust of Pilaf's two goons and your friends. Yick.

Goku gets his Turtle School outfit, something he appreciates, while Pilaf gets a copy of his previous outfit, albeit with the words "BAD MAN" where his symbol used to be. Your friends chuckle at it, and even his minions try their best not to laugh.

"Well... now that we have that out of the way, er, where exactly are we, sis?" brobro questions, slightly freaked out at the mountain that's staring at you all.

"Good question. Pilaf, what's going on? You have any idea where we are?" you ask the little blue imp.

"HOW SHOULD I KNOW?!" he screeches at you. "YOU'RE THE ONES THAT DESTROYED MY AIR FORTRESS!"

You frown at him. "You're going to start being nicer. Now."

He shrinks back, terrified, then tries to put on a sincere face. "Ah, um, what I meant to say is, we've never been here before. W-why don't you look around? I'm sure there will be someone to help you, M-Miss Mahogany."

"That's better." You fly up, scanning the area with your Scouter. It seems... typical, of the Earth's norms. Most are between 5 and 10, some between 10 and 150. You notice a little girl and what seems to be two flying... people? next to her. She seems to be running... almost as fast as YOU can run. Scouter is giving no reading for her Power Level. Slightly closer there seem to be a couple of little aliens... picking up trash? Huh.

She's about the same height as you, maybe a smidge taller, with purple hair, glasses, and a shirt that says "ARALE" on it. You're guessing that Bulma's choice of fashion isn't as unique as you thought.

"Hoyo. You're at Penguin Village. My name's Arale, and these are the Gatchans! Nice to meet you!" She raises a hand in the air as the little flying people make strange noises.

"Penguin... Village..." Acer thinks. He sends you a telepathic message that apparently the place IS on the map of the world, but there's not much about it. Also didn't seem to be as large when you looked it up. How odd.

"Hi, my name's Goku!" the monkey boy tells her. "You were running really fast, how'd you get to be so quick?"

"Hahaha! Professor's responsible for that." she says with a smile. Huh. Things might be making more sense now. Goku and the girl talk for a little bit, your friends introducing themselves, and are a little perplexed by how... similar she and Goku seem. If you didn't know better you'd think they were siblings. Strange, and yet... that blank signal...

You dump Pilaf's crew at a Police Station, and try to make some conversation with Arale. You start to learn a bit about her and the strange place, at least what you can from the girl's strange way of talking. You also wonder what kind of idiot genius can make a fully sapient robot, and yet also somehow make her nearsighted. Unintentionally. Before you can get much else out of her, the conversation is interrupted by... Suno on the Nimbus, with another redheaded girl next to her.

"Goku! Maple! Thank goodness we found you!" she says in a panic. You all ask her what's wrong, and who the other redhead is. "This is my cousin Penny, we went to go find Master Roshi to help her but... but... Mr. Yamcha..." Suno seems like she's about to cry.

"Please! You have to help us!" the other redhead, a girl in a baseball cap, shouts at you.

"Yeah, we've been after them too, trying to stop him and Pilaf from getting their hands on them all." Acer comments, then gives a prideful smile and points to the Police Station with his thumb. "We took care of Pilaf already though."

"King Gurumes sent a powerful person after us! His name is Mercenary Tao, and when he got to Master Roshi's he arrived too... M-Mister Y-Yamcha... said he'd hold him off while we ran, but... he was getting beat up pretty bad..." Suno starts to tear up again, Chi-chi patting her on the shoulder.

"If he's strong enough to hurt Yamcha, he sounds like trouble..." Krillin mentions, making a fist.

"Master Roshi told us to run and find you... Nimbus took us here as fast as it could..." Suno pats the cloud. Arale then does the same and then jumps on it, bouncing on it happily as if it's made of rubber, to the surprise of Goku and the two girls.

"We can take him." you tell her with a cocky smirk. As the three and the two Gatchans leave, you, Goku, Krillin, brobro, and Chi-chi all take to the air. For a moment, you feel worried, and decide to check up on Bulma. "Bulma, it's Maple, Suno and Penny are safe, what happened over there?"

"Maple! Thank goodness!" she seems almost overjoyed that you contacted her. "Yamcha is... he's alive, but he's hurt really bad. That Tao person, they... they were fighting, Yamcha seemed like he had the upper hand, but Tao broke his leg with a strange... beam thing. It pierced through and he was b-bleeding really bad... Tao said he would be back to finish him after he dealt with... Maple please, don't let him come back! You have to stop him!" Bulma shouts in a panic over the Scouter.

"What about Master Roshi, and Launch?" Acer asks.

"They just got back, Roshi said he was felt something wrong and had Launch fly him here as fast as she could. Yamcha is... is out cold..."

"We'll stop him." you tell her with confidence, your friends nodding.

"Geist MaAGH!" he howls in pain as you knock him off his tree, falling.

You don't let up, though, flying around and clocking him in the face with a shout of "MAPLE SMASH!" He's stunned, and you quickly grab him by his ponytail and fling him to the ground. Tao slams in there at rocket-like speeds, leaving a little crater. You quickly fly down, glaring at him... when Arale comes up, now wearing a pink hat, and starts poking him with a stick. He jumps out of the hole he made and shouts at her to stop that.

You quickly ram your fist into his jaw, sending him flying. You don't let up, swiftly running to catch up and then grab him by the leg, making sure he slams into the ground hard. So hard, in fact, he bounces, leading to Krillin and Goku to delivering a pair of kicks to his gut, your brother catching him by his ponytail and flinging him into the air. You quickly jump after and axe kick him back to Earth.

"G-gah... you..." Tao seems to be charging up a Dodonpa again... only to find Arale headbutting him in the back. He lets out a quiet yell of pain.

Chi-chi flies up to you. "That... that didn't even phase her." she says as she stares at the robot girl. "If that hit any of us... Maple, what is she MADE of?"

"I have no clue, and I'm not sure I'll get a clear answer." you tell her, scratching your head. Well, at least she's OK. Arale does a little dance in the air, the Nimbus catching her as Tao falls back to the Earth. He lays there, not quite believing that this is happening. You all surround him.

Time to get rid of that. "So... Crane School, huh? Does that mean you guys have construction work as part of your training too?" All your fellow students start giggling at him. Tao is seething. Arale picks him up as the Police arrive, and then hands him to them. She talks with the officers, apparently familiar with them. They approach you and let you know that they aren't sure they can keep someone so powerful locked up here. You telepathically contact Roshi for assistance.

"Ah... Tao. Kids, I'd say I am surprised you managed to handle him so easily, but then I'd be lying to you all, heh heh! Tell you what, you have someone bring him here, I'll see what I can do, just keep him away from those girls."

You turn to your friends and explain what he said. Krillin volunteers to take Tao to Roshi's, as does Chi-chi.

Right as you say that, a live grenade seems to fall out of his sleeve, Tao smirking victoriously. Arale plays kick-the-can with it for a moment, to almost everyone's horror. All of you save Goku shout for her to kick it away. She finally does so, a bright explosion filling the sky. Chi-chi smacks Tao upside the head for that stunt, then picks him up with Krillin, the two taking to the air.

"We'll be back shortly, don't worry." Acer tells them. "Have Bulma contact us when Tao is dealt with, and we'll regroup at Kame House."

"Sounds like a plan!" Chi-chi gives him a thumb's up. As they fly off, Goku and Arale start talking again.

"You're incredible! You might be even stronger than us! Have you ever thought of fighting in the World Tournament?" the monkey boy asks her. She merely tilts her head, floating around on the Nimbus, not sure what he means. Goku's stomach starts growling before he can expand on it. "Oooh... hungry..." You yourself seem to notice you're starting to run low on strength, given all you've been up to since lunch.

"If you're hungry, the Professor wouldn't mind sharing!" she tells him. You try to shake your head no, but Goku's salivating mouth indicates he is more than on board with the idea. Plus... well, the man DID invent a robot girl leagues stronger than anyone else you've met, and you can't really gauge how strong she is...

To say they're an... odd family would be an understatement. Senbei explains a bit on how he created her as Goku chows down, explaining how complicated her designs were. You might not be a MASTER of stealth, but... can't hurt to try? You give a quick scan with your Scouter. Normal human guards, one tremendous Power Level of... 900?! Woah. But then it starts to fluctuate, dropping down to 500 at minimum, then up again. This is suspicious, and ominous. Upon arriving at the castle, thankfully undetected, you turn to everyone. "Penny, Suno, Goku, this is a sneaking mission, try not to get caught, and use stealth as best you can."

Cautiously, and with a lot of near misses by both you and Goku, with the other girls being clearly better at this than you two are, you sneak your way around the castle, knocking out a few guards along the way. If it were tangible it would assault your senses, like the smell of rotting garbage, the taste of moldy bread, the sound of nails on a chalkboard. It comes from the stones, then seeps into him, feeding on his greed, his gluttony, twisting his mind into a shadow of its former self. This... you wouldn't wish this fate upon your worst enemy. You might not even wish this upon the late King of the Saiyans.

"You're tough, big guy, but I'm not gonna give up yet!" Goku tries to charge him.

"Goku, stop!" you shout, to his confusion. He backs up, avoiding the monster man's fist. "This... Gurumes, do you know why you feel this? Do you know what you did to deserve this fate?"

"RRRRUUUUBBBIIIIEEESSS...HRH... HRAAAAGH!" he roars, toppling over in pain. He grabs Goku by the tail, the monkey boy going limp and Gurumes trying to slam him into the ground repeatedly.

You place your hand on his head. Okay. Just like Baba taught you... you focus ki into trying to break the curse. It takes every last ounce of your strength, but... you manage it. A snapping sound can be heard. A crimson aura begins to leave Gurumes' body as he lets go of Goku's tail, his form shrinking into a more human shape. His guards look at you, stunned, even Penny and Suno don't know what to think. You... feel lightheaded, and stumble backwards. Goku catches you before you fall and helps set you down. You see the former monster throw something up. The 2-Star Dragon Ball. Everyone in the room approach him as he whimpers helplessly on the ground. He's human again.

You look down at King Gurumes. "You played around with forces you couldn't even hope to start understanding. Hell, I don't really know what they are... but, King Gurumes, these Blood Rubies cursed you. They took advantage of your greed, and warped you." you tell the man, now noticeably smaller, not much bigger than Goku.

"R-rubies... h-hunger..." He turns to look at you, then at Penny, and cringes, arms twitching as he struggles to stand. "Y-you s-saved... me..."

"We're giving you a second chance. One you wouldn't get through the Dragon Balls alone." you then look at Penny, who is holding one of the only things on the man's plate that he seems to not have eaten: a single, bright red apple. Gurumes weakly tries to move towards her, the girl shying away. "I've made a decision. We're going to collect the last Dragon Ball, and then grant Penny's wish to restore this land to its former beauty... without the cursed Blood Rubies. Are... you willing to go along with this?"

The male and female guards look at you in horror, then anger, but Gurumes stands. "...yes. Take them, make them go away, please." Penny reluctantly hands him the apple, as a sign of forgiveness. Gurumes takes a bite, and seems overjoyed. "I... I can taste it! I can taste again! So good, oh, thank you, thank you!"

"Well, an apple a day keeps the curses away!" you tell him with a cheeky grin. Everyone but Goku gives you an annoyed glare. You don't care, you had to say that.

I think Toriyama said that he always imagined the scouters as an analog-type device, like with a lot of moving parts and stuff which caused it to explode when it read a power that was too great. But he also mentions that the exploding part was mostly just to look cool. I guess that if it detects a power level that's too high, it works too hard too quickly and overloads itself, which results in the dramatic explosion that we're all familiar with.

I'd guess that less explosion-prone scouters try to measure power level off of how the environment reacts to high power levels, and is more of a passive detector rather than whatever the cheaper models are made of. That way they can just throw an error if there's something outside of their reading range.

Skills factor into it, along with level. Right now you are at level 1, and your highest stat is your ki attacks, which ease the DC a bit on things that are vulnerable to it. Things like Buyon, however, wouldn't budge no matter how much ki you pour into a Kamehameha or something like that. Clothes Beam is super useful since few people would see it coming, but it too can fail against some kinds of opponents, especially ones that know about you.
