The adrenaline rush that sustained you through the battle has faded, and as the last of your enemies falls to the ground, you find it increasingly hard to stay on your feet. You won. It was a hard fought battle, but as you see your enemies dead or dying on the ground, you know you won.

Your attention is drawn from your fallen opponents to the artifact as it begins to glow, a sign that it is almost time. You take a few uncertain steps towards it before your legs give out, and you collapse. You're hurt and exhausted, but you're also victorious and alive. Closing your eyes, you stop for a moment and contemplate your situation.

How do you feel?

>Terrible. They were your friends; you didn't want to fight. You didn't want any of this.
>You feel nothing. They wanted you dead, you didn't want to die. Simple as that.
>You feel great! That was pretty much the last obstacle to your master plan!

>Disgusted

You told them that they had to unite - to leave their petty differences at the door. And even when they did, it was too late. No room for errors. No room for mistakes. No room for mercy or forgiveness. And so you forged yourself into something you hate: a man who was supposed to lead a happy life, but somehow you lost the way.

Somehow, you became worse the monster you had to destroy. Worse - because you chose this path. Chose it knowingly and gladly.

You'll never forgive yourself.

You lie on the ground a moment, and think of the fight that just occured. You think of moments you could have done a bit better - places you could have zigged where you could have zagged - but you realize that you don't feel anything about it. You don't even feel anger. None of this was personal. They believed you had to die for their survival, you believed they had to die for yours.

You wonder for just a moment if maybe they weren't right. You recall the prophecy that claimed that you would be the one to bring about the end of the world, in this very place, on this very day. You never particularly believed in destiny or fate, but others did, and you've been hunted ever since the prophecy was made public. The irony is not lost on you that being hunted by those trying to thwart fate was what brought you here in the first place.

Whether they were right or not doesn't matter. If you brought about the end of the world, or if they killed you, it would have ultimately ended the same as far as you're concerned - in your death. Just as lying here on the floor eventually would.

Gathering all the strength in your body, you start dragging yourself towards The Artifact. In truth, it is repulsive. It is a disgusting thing with impossible dimensions, its very being an affront to existence. There are many rumors of what exactly the damned thing does. Some say it is the herald of the end of the world, others say the one bathed in its otherworldly glow will have the power to reshape the world in their image, still others say it will give those in its presence the freedom to toy with destiny and fate. Whatever it does, the many seers and oracles of the world can agree on one thing - it happens tonight. And by the increasing light, it is likely happening soon.

What drives you towards the artifact despite your disgust?

You're laughing as you drag your body across the floor. You can't really help it. It's just, everything seems more like one huge joke with each passing moment. You've tried to be a decent person. You've always been a survivor, but not at the expense of others when you could help it. You certainly never went out of your way to hurt others, but some old crones in their towers decide you're dangerous, and suddenly the whole world is against you. You were counted among the worst of criminals, everyone took it for granted that you were hell-bent on the destruction of the world.

But you still tried to be a decent person. You didn't kill those who did you no harm, even when it was perhaps better to do so. You tried to simply be left alone, but your pursuers never let up. Eventually in running, you came to this place only to use its labyrinthine corridors and endless traps to shake off your pursuers. It was only when you were accused of actively trying to fulfil the prophecy that you heard anything about things ending here.

They accused you, hunted you, drove you here, then claimed that your attempts to run made them just. That they were in the right because you ended up exactly where they drove you.

You finally reach The Artifact, and use the side of the pedestal to drag yourself to your feet so you can take it into your hands. If this really does have the power to change the world, then you'll make sure it's a fair one. If it destroys it? You're not sure you care anymore.

Just as your hand brushes against the unnatural surface of The Artifact, you lurch forward and feel a sudden pain in your chest and try to gasp, only to find it hard to breathe. You look down and see a red stain growing around the tip of an arrow. One of your enemies must have survived - they'll likely be hailed as a hero if they get out of here, and the world will continue to be a cruel and unfair place. There really is no justice.

(1/?)
>>
>>40849517

As your vision swims and you collapse again, you wonder what a more fair world would be like.

---

Despite your sudden lack of senses, you are acutely aware of the whole world as you fall into slumber. It's almost as if you ARE the world. You're aware of every plant, every animal, and every human. You're aware of it as something foreign sweeps across the planet's surface, and life suddenly starts disappearing. You're aware of the mountains crumbling into the sea, of the return of life to the surface, and the rise of a new human civilization. For just a moment it seems like someone is trying to get you to wake up, but something like a lullaby convinces you it's not worth it. You're aware of another spread of the odd foreign existence that seemed to coincide with the disappearance of life from the surface before, on a much lower scale. You're aware of humans spreading across the planet's surface once again. And you're aware of someone trying to wake you up.

---

"Do you think you stand a chance?"

"Me? Gods no. But you see, I spent a lot of time making sure that it was more than just you all versus me. Behold, history's greatest weapon!"

...Your eyes flutter open, and it's too damn bright to see. There's someone standing beside you, shouting and gesturing wildly, and five humanoid blurs opposite you.

"It's awake? Then... It's too late for the ritual to..."

"Then we have to put it down for good!"

You are given little time to think over the situation as you're suddenly set upon as the five rush towards you, indistinct weapons drawn.

What do you do?

>This too is a matter of survival. You're a bit out of it, but there's only one option. Kill them.
>This is odd. Defend and Retreat until you can get your bearings.

You just woke up, and you can barely see. You're confident in your combat abilities, but these aren't exactly odds in your favor. You've gotten fairly used to dealing with fighting against multiple people at once, and they're ameteurs - you're able to dance just out of range of the one who rushed you first, to constantly keep one of the ones coming at you up close between yourself and the one hanging behind the rest - as your eyes adjust to the brightness, you're able to make out your opponents more clearly. You're not sure whether or not you're glad for that.

None of them could be older than teenagers, and each of them is in ridiculously gaudy bright colored and form-fitting clothes. The four immediately in your face have weapons you're familiar with - two have absurdly sized swords, one has a mace of some sort, and one uses some sort of gauntlets - the fifth carries what you can only assume is some sort of absurdly long wand. You can see an older man, standing besides the pedestal on which The Artifact had been placed. Equally ridiculously dressed, he's doing something to it but you can't tell what - fending these kids off requires SOME of your attention.

The first one to come at you, dressed in absurdly bright reds and blues, swings wide. Something about his cartoonishly large sword, his ineffective swings, and his absurd dress makes you chuckle and you're surprised to hear it come out almost as a raspy growl.

"Is it... Mocking us?"

Suddenly the one with the wand makes her move, points it at you, and there is a sound of thunder and a bright flash.

You toss your arm, up as you hear the crack, and feel some sort of impact, but it isn't even enough to make you stagger. No, what makes you stop is your own arm. Or rather, what is certainly NOT your own arm. A black haze, slowly condensing into an arm far too long for any human, ending in something that can only be described as a claw, not to mention the mouth in its middle. You're able to keep your composure enough to avoid the weapons coming at your head, but you soon realize you don't need to as with a misstep, a sword passes through your head harmlessly.

Stopping, you look down at yourself, and realize that you are most certainly no longer human. Your entire body is covered in a blackness like shadows are clinging to your form, your arms reach almost to the ground and where you should have fingers, you have digits with one too many joints and claws half as long as each digit. Your legs are thin, seeming almost like they shouldn't support your weight and holy shit you have like three different extra mouths on your body.

Less inclined to deal with bullshit after this development, you don't have difficulty stopping your opponents weapons with one hand while you try to process what you're seeing.

You realize that your... Unnatural form may be at least a part of the problem at hand, and wonder if it can be changed. You try to mentally assess your own body, to try to change - you are suddenly flooded with new sensations. You can actually FEEL those other mouths now, and you're aware of more eyes on your head than you were before. A bit more fiddling in your own head and it feels like you've grabbed a hold of something important, something that will let you make alterations to yourself but god DAMN these kids won't get out of your face.

"Can you stop a second? I'm trying to figure something out here."

"Did it just... Talk?" Nearly everyone in the room asks the question in unison, as a stunned silence falls. Which is fine by you, you need just a second to... Oh!

It hurts. It hurts a LOT. It's almost as if you reached into your body and decided to simply twist everything in knots. But it's only a moment, and when you look down, you look a lot more humanoid. Well like a completely featureless human shadow, but that's better than where you were before. The five fighters and the older man are all looking at you in a stunned silence.

"There we go. Almost as handsome as I used to be." You take a moment more to admire your handiwork towards turning to the five who were attacking you, "Now, can we try to work this out?" Your voice is oddly raspy and there's a sound like you're echoing within your body but your voice is definitely working. "Why are you trying to kill me, and what can I do to convince you to stop?"

"What are you DOING? KILL THEM." The older man stops whatever he's doing with the pedestal to yell, but you're not actually all that concerned with him - he's not attacking you.

The five seem rather wary of you, but as you sit down and cross your arms, they look towards each other and back to you.

The one with the wand steps forward, timidly asking: "You're... You're the Great Catastrophe, right? Wakes up to destroys the world?"

"No, that's ridiculous. If the world dies, I die too. Why would I destroy it?"

The older man seems legitimately shocked as he hears this, out of the corner of his eyes you see him sink to his knees.

"I'm sorry, it's just... This is where the Great Catastrophe was supposed to be sealed away?"

You try to cock an eyebrow. You're suddenly aware that you don't actually have eyes right now, so you're not sure how you're seeing and you're sure it's unnerving but you really can't be bothered to fix it at the moment. "I'm sorry, you'll have to explain, I don't actually know what that is."

"The Great Catastrophe is the end of the world! It was sealed away by a group of heroes-" The boy in bright red and blue starts getting excited, and you can't help but be reminded of a puppy, the way he's so easily distracted.

The other sword wielder, entirely in bright greens, seems more level headed, interjecting."Well, I mean, no one's really sure about that. It happened a really long time ago. We just know that there is... Was something sealed away here that causes some sort of disaster if it's not pacified at the right time every century."

"-Yeah, and HE was trying to make it happen early because he thought he could control it-" You realize that you were distracted thinking about the implications, and that two members of your conversation circle seem to have left to apprehend the old man.

"-Which was really, really dumb." The girl with the wand takes her turn interjecting, and you take a moment to glance at her weapon.

Keep in mind especially for cathulu like entities are not evil. It is just that they usually bring disaster in their wake because to them a person would be insignificant.

Talk about disaster. Wondering did this disaster happen twice? as we seemed to sense a foreign presence. Also I really doubt the ritual of slumber would work on us anymore as we voluntarily decided too not wake up.

It seems that there's an empty space where your name used to be. You know where it is in your thoughts, and yet trying to reach it results in... No, not an empty space. It's more like a void, actively eating the thoughts around it. Which is kind of terrifying really. "I'll go last."

"Oh, well, I'm Bladechanneler Arat." The easily excited one is the first to speak, and you suspect he often is with this group, and his fellow sword wielder is next.

"I am Bladechanneler Ral."

As the boy and the girl with the mace and the axe sit down, the old man between them, the boy with the mace speaks. "I am Shir. I was meant to be doing the ritual of appeasement when it was next neccesary. This is my bodyguard, Millia." The girl does no more than nod to you, and sit with a tight grip over the old man's shoulders.

"I'm Shavia. I'm a Gunpriestess." The girl waves her wand and her tone suggests she said was supposed to be obvious.

Haha, you have no idea what the fuck half of the words they even used were. You nod politely and take the time to focus on some introspection to figure out what happened to your name, and instead become very aware of... Your self.

[Controlled Form] - You can manage a humanoid form, but it's really a poor approximation, and you feel sluggish maintaining it.

(For reference, adult humans are generally 2. 5 is truly exceptional.)

Fate: [99/100]
-There is the slightest weakness in the grasp of fate, but it won't let go of you that easily.
Catastrophe: [99/100]
-You stand on the brink of Catastrophe. Tread Lightly.

(You may, at any time attempt to gain a new power or form in any category. Doing so is playing with fate though, and you must attempt to roll over the Fate number or risk an increase in Catastrophe points. You do not want maximum Catastrophe.)

>>40852677
Ah i get it now, we'd need to roll 100 to not increase catastrophe to 100 and probably end the world or something worse.

Pretty much, so we should try and get Fate lower before we go full EVOLVE up this.

>>40852653
You CAN lose Catastrophe points, and Fate points. Fate points can be good or bad. They're a measure of how likely that things that serve to fulfill prophecy and fate will happen exactly as they're meant to when push comes to shove. Basically if you run into a prophecy right now that says you're going to fall down a well, there's a 99% chance you'll fall down a well. If it says you'll fall down a well at this moment, and there's not one in sight, it's modified accordingly. Subverting destiny is the easiest way to reduce fate, Catastrophe will lower over time that you're not actively destroying the world, and by actively reducing the perception that you're going to ruin everything for everyone forever.
>>
>>40852755
That seems really interesting.
>>
>>40852755
So that one we lost is from cancelling the new prophecy that we'd destroy the world?
Huh, this is pretty cool.

Yeah whatever binds us to this horrible cycle of destruction still has a very strong hold on us.

So basically if we embrace our full power the world ends it looks like(well to them).

You reach out to grab the old man's chin and force him to face you, staring him in the eyes, before you remember again that you don't have actual eyes at the moment. So maybe the heartfelt 'be honest with me' route is out. "You're next."

When he doesn't talk, Ral speaks up, "He's called Salaman the Red. Red for the people he's killed trying to steal the throne from the Queen."

"Only children see the world as so black and white! I was CHEATED out of my place on the throne-"

"-You were cheated out of nothing! You're a blackhearted killer!"

You grasp there is perhaps some history here, but you have a more pressing question: "Why?" Your grip tightens ever-so-subtly, as if to let Salaman know you Would Very Much Like a whole And truthful answer and won't really tolerate the silent treatment.

"Many thought the Great Catastrophe was a monster, but all of my research suggested the being which caused the first ending was a weapon, not an..." He hesitates and gulps. "Not someone as intelligent and cultured as yourself."

"I'm not the Great Catastrophe." You release your grip, having gotten at least the basics. So he risked ending the world over some sort of succession dispute on a few books? Huh. Not that you really risked it on better information, but at least you had some ideals.

Shavia speaks up suddenly "So what do you plan on doing now?"

"What do you mean?" You ask

"It will probably be very difficult for you to travel unmolested. If you would like I could speak to the Mother Superiror and have her confirm you are not a threat to the world. Or at the very least that you are not the prophesied Great Catastrophe."

So she's offering you the help of some religious organization? Seems a bit dicey.

Not gonna lie, I've wondered about a scenario like this being in a game and thought it'd be hilarious. Legendary Great Evil is awakened by the Dark Sorcerer...and then it's actually not a half bad being/thing, really doesn't want to destroy the world or nothing...but still at the same time, fuck it, might as well get a morning workout in after being asleep for so long, plus those kids have come all this way, probably though a lot of hardship, so just to let it not go to waste they maybe have a little sparring match just to be able to say they actually fought.

Let's also remember before we turn her down, we were basically in the same situation in our last life and we were hated because no one even gave us a shot. If nothing else, we can go with them FOR NOW, hang around the church for a bit, let this Mother Superior see and then vouch for us, then make our way from there. If this goes by the usual JRPG hero tropes, then even odds that this lady is a major player in this world's culture- so it'd be worth getting the thumbs up from her.

Ral lets out a snort of derision as you ask what issue Salaman has with the queen. "Salaman was the crown prince before he decided that he was free to kill and experiment with his subjects as he pleased."

"Is that what that venomous bitch is saying now? I served my country as my father asked, I did what was necessary. And I was disowned for doing as I was told."

"Lies from a powerhungry coward. King Farid loved the people" Arat cuts in, his hand hovering over the hilt of his weapon. "The idea he would have you murder so many is absurd."

"You are too young to know. He was only 'good' at manipulating the weak m- MMPMPH."

Shir places a hand over Salaman's mouth. "I will have no further words against my lady or her late father."

You however still have questions, and motion for Shir to let Salaman be, "So why exactly did you think risking annihilation of the world was a good decision?"

He turns his head away and again refuses to speak, but for a moment, he glances towards the pedestal, and you suspect something may be there.

Shavia lights up at the opportunity to share information of her church, and the expression on the faces of the remainder of her group indicate that she has been perhaps more than eager to share in the past. "The Sisters of Sight are the ones devoted to the preservation of the world before the second ending. We keep prayers to the old gods, maintain the old stories, pass on the traditions. We make it our place to teach people of the ways from before, as much as we can, and hunt down and preserve their relics. Those of us blessed enough to have the gift to use the relics of old become the enforcers of the church, Gunpriestesses-" You start to wonder why what sounds a bit like a historical preservation society would need enforcers when Arat speaks up and preempts your asking of the other question on your mind.

"The Sighted Sisters are well meaning enough, if a bit backwards. I'm sure they would do fine by you, but you would probably do better coming with us - I'm sure if we explain our story you will be granted the full protection of the throne." It seems that most of the group are actually affiliated with this kingdom in question; Shavia may be the only exception, given the cold stare aimed at Arat.

This sounds like a good idea though it might put the party on edge.

I get the idea that in this JRPG this is actually only the middle boss fight. There is surely a bigger bad.
>>
>>40853687
>Investigate the Pedestal
I don't trust the Queen. Or the Mother Superior. Or anyone.
>>
>>40853687
>>I'd like to meet this Mother Superior firstly. She seems the head of an interesting group, and I'm curious to see if that whole 'backwards' thing holds water. I do eventually want to see about this Queen though. Perhaps your royalty is different to what I remember of them...

Honestly, the idea of relics and ancient stuffs seems cool. I want to do a bit of everything.
>>
I get the feeling that investigating the pedestal isn't the best idea if we want to keep ourselves sane/non-Catastrophic. Just a hunch, would be glad to be wrong.
>>
>>40853726
I do not want a religious person to declare us evil and a monster.

So lets not.
>>
>>40853752
The whole point of visiting her is to show her we're not so bad so she'll do the OPPOSITE of that. Risky, but good payoff if she's the head of an influential group.

You get to your feet, and approach the pedestal. You don't see anything at first, and then you don't see anything. Your vision is gone, as are all your senses, and it seems almost as if someone is trying to sing you to sleep.

There's no saving us. We either die by their hands and end the quest, or kill them and succumb to fate now.
>>
What is the nature of the loss? so far thinking going for personal loss.
>>
>>40854005
How does personal loss translate immediatelly to death?
It could be the loss of some power, or loss of memories, or so many things.
>>
>>40854014

Just the tone makes me think it and how we now have unlimited fate points and are basically overmarked on everything. It rings to me like 'You failed keeping your containment levels below critical, so now it's just a matter of how bad the explosion's gonna be.'
>>
>>40854024
That would be maximum catastrophe though.

Whoahohofuckthat. Fate can go right ahead and fuck itself.

Fate [100-(10^-∞)/100]

You just woke up and you're not letting some ill defined concept of what you 'have to' do boss you around. It's difficult but as you bear down on them, you manage to maintain enough control to make one utterance. "I'm going to kill you." They seem startled and draw their weapons which is more or less exactly what you were hoping for.

Throwing yourself forward you impale yourself on a sword, allowing it to pass your defenses. You got a pretty good sense of your body, and you don't THINK there are really vital organs to stab, just a lot of pain. A lot of fantastically focusing pain. Hard to let your mind drift off when there's a sword hanging out of you!

You stand up straight, the weapon still lodged in your body, as the other weapons crash on you harmlessly. You needed some pain to focus, not THAT much.

"I'm deeply sorry about that," you say as you grab... Ral? Was that who this was? You didn't really notice before but you think you've been having difficulty telling people apart. You're pretty sure this one was named Ral. You're also pretty sure that even if you're just trying to show that you're NOT in fact trying to kill him, he doesn't appreciate being held in the air as you brush him off.

You're not actually sure what that was, but it was pretty concerning. In fact, your concern over your momentary loss of control is the only thing keeping you from panicking about the sword that seems to be unable to come loose of your stomach.

Fate[99/100].
Catastrophe[98/100]
>You are what you are. And you are not some great catastrophe.

[Scar: Weak Point]
-You have a weakpoint that bypasses most of your defenses.

There was this abandoned manga, Shina Dark, basically it was a harem comedy on an ancient evil that awakens when the stars are right along with his evil island.

Due to legends people send hundreds of women as offerings to appease him so when he actually wakes up he has to deal with a whole bunch of women who are now considered too tainted to leave the island. The truth was that he had no interest in them romantically and had grown bored with the evil overlord thing and simply wanted to be left alone.

Cue hijinks to try and turn this island of women into a nation while fighting off heroes who are after him and the evil monsters that arise because he's awake.
