The moment is cut short by an earth-shaking roar from the opening above, and a sudden bright light drowning out all the rest. Cain dives under the serpentine dragon, and you look back up, the beast from the ship spreading its wings out above you, blocking out the moon as it breathes flame down into the caldera. You throw yourself over Emma, and the flames turn your clothing to ash, searing your skin and burning away fur and hair alike. You scream in pain, the flames washing over you as quickly as they'd come, leaving you smouldering... but Emma unharmed. She looks up at you, wide-eyed in disbelief. You smile down at her weakly.

You're barely hanging onto your consciousness as the bulk of the gigantic crimson beast slams down into the caldera, scattering its trove and bellowing another shriek of rage. The Mer are blown back, knocked end over end against the walls, unused to fighting on dry land. Cain turns his body into the rush of air, presenting his shoulder to it and holding his ground. You crouch down, gripping the rock floor and letting the wind rush over you.

Cain glares up at the beast and readies his spear, but you hold out your hand. "Wait... wait, no." He looks back at you like you'd gone mad, his eyes widening at the state of you. You shake your head, forestalling further questions, and turn your attention to the dragon as you limp forward. "Please... please, we don't want to harm you. We don't want to... to fight. We just want our sister back... we just want Djanna..."

The beast rumbles low in its throat, regarding you with wrath in its eyes. "Djannnaaaaaaa..." It takes a thundering step forward, its tail whipping through the air, a high-pitched whistle accompanying the motion. "Miiiiiiiiiiiiiiine..."

It growls at him, snapping down on the spear and jerking it out of his hands before spitting it toward the wall of the cavern. It lands a few feet short, tip embedded in the stone, shaft trembling with the force of impact.

You nod, losing your strength to stand and falling to your knees. The back of your legs crackle, sending new rivulets of gore streaming down your lower legs, pooling under you. Your tail's gone limp, and your arms hand loose at your sides. Your vision is swimming. The beast pulls its head back, and it reaches out a claw toward you slowly. Cain rises shakily to his feet, one eye swollen shut. He shakes his head to clear it, limping toward you.

"N-Nadia... no... run..."

The beast caresses your cheek with its massive claw, surprisingly gentle for a beast of its size. You look up slowly, your vision growing white around the edges. "Djaaaaannaaaaa friiiiiiiend... Syyyyyyllleeeeaaaa... friiiiiiieeeeeeend.... myyyyyyyy friiiiiieeeen-"

Basically I'm seeing a parallel to Bloodborne's Father Gascoigne, where the hunt over took the father and only the memories of his wife and daughter are enough to snap him out of it. Of course in Bloodborne it is to late where is here it seems he wasn't to far gone to recognize family.
