The year is 2089, and on the surface, this world seems just the same as ours. If you look more closely though, you will find psychics, mages, mythological monsters and more, all hidden from the general populace.
You are an agent of the Order of the Magus Hunters, the organisation keeping this secret from the rest of the world. They are troubleshooters, police, military and assassins all in one, and all so that the world can be safe.

The options are a guideline, not an absolute, which is why I will always include a Write in option. I may occasionally forget to add it but feel free to do so anyway. Some options I list are good, some are bad, most won’t be really awesome. I leave it up to you to find ways to do that.
Also feel free to ask things if they’re not entirely clear. I reserve the right to dodge the issue if it’s done for plot reasons, but otherwise I’ll gladly provide more information.
>>
>Last time on Magus Hunter Quest: You head out shopping and buy magical defences, ammo, and some sentry guns to defend your home with. After some training and socialisation with Liam and Nathan, the rest of the team returns and reports on the magical circle they found, most likely the first of the series. After that, you move on to a date with Helena which goes well but ends with her wanting to be friends instead of something more.

You wake up next morning with a shock. You bolt upright in your room and quickly scan the area. There was something there, you’re sure of it, but your violent waking up must have scared it off. It’s probably still the same thing. You’re becoming more and more convinced that it does not intend to harm you (at least, not yet) and is just trying to learn more about you. And with the vampire war brewing up, you’re not sure if you can devout much time to figuring it out and fighting back.

The Oculus Primus seemed to be concerned with it though. You figure you might have a good ally there when it comes to this. At least until it’s over, then he might try to experiment on you, but you figure you’ll cross that bridge when you get that far. IF you get that far, your morbid mood correct you.

It’s only 6 am, but you figure you’re not getting much more sleep anyway and get up. Not much later you’re having a quiet breakfast when Liam shows up, surprised to find you there already.

“Morning sir, that’s early for you.” It’s a statement, not a question, but you can tell he’s curious as to why regardless. He’s professional enough to not let it shine through in his behaviour, but your telepathy has the habit of passively picking up things like that.

“Yeah, I didn’t sleep very well. Woke up and figured I might as well get up, you know.” You say. Liam nods, his curiosity satisfied.

You’ve got plenty of time before the rest of the team will arrive, so you head to the common room and think things through. The vampire war and Edward’s request. The Outsider, aberration or whatever it may be and its… Avatar? You guess that could be a good name for it. And Helena. It still stings, but you’ve been let down before. You figure you’ll get over it.

Eventually it’s late enough and you go back to the dining room. No one seems to take any particular notice of you. Halfway through the team’s meal, you get a message saying that the materials you ordered from the Order will be arriving in the afternoon. Eventually, when everyone’s finished, you start the day proper.

“Ok people, I’d like to get this magic circle business behind us before the war escalates. Either it helps us or it’s one less distraction in the back of our minds. Milly, have you come up with anything yet?” You say.

Milly nods, and you move to the common room. In the back of your head you have a little nagging voice telling you to build a proper briefing room, but so far you haven’t really had the need. This works just fine.

On the way there, you talk to Milly for a moment. “How are you?”

Milly seems a bit perplexed at your interest in her wellbeing. “I am fine.” At least she didn’t say something like ‘operational’.

“How’s that… Update coming along?” It feels a bit weird to ask, but you’re honestly curious about it. You’d rather not have a repeat of last time regardless of what causes it.

“Current predictions say it will be implemented this evening.” She replies.

“That’s good to hear. By the way, there’ll be an Order delivery this afternoon. If we’re still away, could you take that?” You ask her. She just nods, and you arrive in the common room. Milly immediately steps forward and sorts things out with Wooster and quickly pops up a holographic map above the central table.

“With the current projections, I have been unable to find any Order-related buildings that would large enough to hold the circle as estimated by Mr Raphael.” Milly begins. “However, there are two things that are close enough that they might be related to the circle anyway. The first is a small Oculus outpost monitoring the second place.”
>>
She sighs, and looks uncharacteristically worried for a moment. “The second place are the caves the Summer Fae had their headquarters in during the war six hundred years ago. There’s still some magical activity in the caves which is actively being monitored by the outpost. The caves themselves are off-limits to civilians, and technically speaking non-Oculus Order personnel, but I found a loophole to get around that. I can officially requisition you for an Oculus-related mission. Normally this would take a few weeks to be approved, but in case of emergencies this can be retroactively approved. I have enough leeway to work with that I believe.”

So, an ancient Fae headquarters and the outpost monitoring it to make sure they don’t return. You somehow doubt it’ll be the listening post. Tobias will probably be skilled enough to fool the Oculus agents there so he’d have no qualms with using the caves.

“I have maps of the caves available, but my info suggests that they will not be reliable. Summer Fae magic tends to never stop changing its environments and is very hard to clean up, so it is highly likely the entire cave system has regrown into something different by now.”

>1. Head for the observation post first, even if you doubt it’s there, you might learn something about the caves before you enter.

By the way, I added a small gear section with everyone of the team. Still subject to change, perhaps also on player request, and I still have to add an ammo unlocked section.
>>
>>40928725
Seeing that Nathan carries an AR, I think we should get him a single-shot gun not unlike pic related for his Stasis Round. Otherwise an ammo switch takes too damn long if the AR works anything like our contemporary ones.
>>
“Anything there that could be dangerous? That Fae magic sounds ominous.” You ask.

“The caves should not hold anything dangerous. They have been warded against wildlife so they could not get mutated from the magic, and the magic itself won’t be a problem. Fae think long-term and their magic works the same way. Anything down there for less than a year won’t have any side-effects at all. And so far, Tobias Patterson seems to have preferred subterfuge over potentially dangerous traps so I do not believe that pattern is likely to change.”

“Very well, let’s gear up then people.” You get into your vehicles and head over to the outpost, using the gps to guide you. On the way there, you go over the info about it. It’s mostly automated, but apparently there’s someone there part-time to keep an eye on things. Not the most interesting job, really. The outpost itself is actually just a small shack in the middle of nowhere. The closest town if a few miles to the east, and you’re still some distance away from Cambridge.

You also occasionally check the ley-line sensors Milly installed in the cars, and you seem to veer slightly off course from them as you approach the observation post. The line you’re following from your own circle seems to head towards the caves a bit further down the road. You wonder how that works, with the Fae magic. It’s supposed to change everything it touches over the years, and Tobias should have arrived here about two-hundred years ago.

The cars are parked right next to the shack and you and your team step outside. There’s a barrier over the road right next to it to prevent people from going to the caves, but aside from the road and two parking spots, one of which is occupied by a small brown car, there doesn’t seem to be anything nearby other than dirt, grass and the occasional rock.

“Katherine, you’re with me. The rest of you, scout the area to see if you can find any trapdoors or similar. And be sure to check out the car here.” You tell your team.

You examine the building as you approach it. It’s relatively modern. Maybe a hundred years tops, and definitely not around when Tobias would have arrived here. It’s mostly concrete, and there’s a window facing the road. Your team hasn’t entered the window’s view yet though, so whoever’s in there has no idea who you are yet. The sound of your cars arriving probably would have alerted him to your presence though, so you better be careful to avoid startling him and getting a gun pointed at you.

You knock on the door, and say “Order business”. There’s no response, and you feel the handle on the door. It’s unlocked, and you can distinctly feel someone inside. He’s…

Wait, he’s sleeping.

You can sense he’s pretty close to the door, so you figure a bit of a harder knock should wake him up. “Hey, in there!” You almost shout. “Order business, open up!” You’re running out of patience and start to check the door for magic when you notice he wakes up.

“Huh, wha? Who’s there? Oh shit, boss! Sorry man, I-“ At this point he opens the door and realises you’re definitely not his boss. The man in front of you seems to be in his early thirties, glasses awkwardly placed on his nose and not adjusted yet since he woke up. He’s pretty small, scrawny, and if he’d have been wearing some sort of nerdy T-shirt you doubt he’d be out of place at a sci-fi convention or something. He’s not though, he’s wearing a normal shirt.

“Hi.” You smile at him. Perhaps a bit too broadly, but you can’t help but be amused at the situation. “I’m vindicator primus Weston, we’re here on a mission and I’d like to check the contents and readings of this… Outpost.”

“Um, uh… You. Uh. You need permission from my boss for that, I think.” He manages to blurt out, rubbing his eyes and trying to fully wake up.

“That’s ok.” Katherine starts talking. “We’ve got that sorted out with the Oculus itself. We’ll also go into the caves later.”

“Whoa whoa, that’s not ok!” He seems a bit shocked. “That’s like, at the top of my job description. ‘Don’t let people into the caves’.”

“As I’ve said, we’ve cleared it with the Oculus.” Katherine’s confident smile never wavers, and the scrawny man is taken aback.

“Uh, ok, sure. Erm, I’ll check it out, for now feel free to look around in here.” He replies. He steps out of the way so you can enter and reaches for his phone. You hope Milly has done her magic by now and that there won’t be a problem. If all else fails you figure you can just go for it, he doesn’t seem like he’d be able to stop you and he felt like a mundane earlier.

I guess Weston is totally distracted checking out all the nerd stuff this guy happens to have in his shack.
>>
You look around the shack for a moment, and find it filled with devices that remind you much of what Milly has in her observatory. In fact, you think you recognise one of them. The man nervously gestures to a few tablets lying around, and you pick one up to check it out. It seems all the data from the machines is accessible through them, and you look around a bit. A lot of it is incomprehensible, and you find your attention being drawn by the clerk’s phone conversation.

“Yes boss, they said they had clearance to- Yes sir. No sir. I don’t know sir. A Vindicator Primus Michael… Keaton? Something like that, I think. Yes, Weston, that’s the one sir!”

So, he knew about you, you take that as a good sign. A few moments later you’re proven right as he continues. “He didn’t mention an emergency, but they are currently reading through the data feeds. Indeed sir. I know, it does seem odd to involve the Vindex, you’re absolutely right sir. I mean, wouldn’t you have noticed if something was wrong sir?”

From what you can gather his boss is the one checking the data. He might just be here in case of system failure. Suddenly, Katherine pulls you back to your main objective. “Sir, I think I’ve got something. I mean, I’m no expert, but these readings, to me at least, seem to indicate there’s an area to the back that’s clear of Fae magic.”

“Huh? Oh, good work. Send it to Milly to confirm.”
>>
A few minutes later, Milly indeed confirmed that one of the furthest areas of the caves is clear of Fae magic, so that is most likely the place to look. She’s even checked back the dates and it seemed to fit. Around 300 years ago the magic started to subside from that area and had a slight acceleration around a hundred years later until it was free of Fae influence a few years later. It seems the entire area is slowly turning normal again, but it’ll take at least another 1000 years before it’s completely gone.

You thank the man still rambling to his boss. He’s not sure how to react and quickly continues talking to his boss as apparently he’s furiously complaining about the Order’s treating of the Oculus or something. You only catch half of it but the man on the other end of the line doesn’t seem happy, and does seem to love ranting.

“Have a nice day, and sorry we interrupted your nap!” You say cheerfully, and deliberately loud enough to be overheard through the phone.

“Oh? Uh, yeah, thanks.” He says, and turns back to the phone call as you leave. You can almost understand what his boss shouts at him next, but you can’t quite make out the words he’s using to berate his subordinate.

You call your team together again once outside, and they report. Liam found an overgrown ruin which seemed to be the old observation post, but neither he nor Blake found anything of note in or around it. Likewise, Raphael and Nathan couldn’t find anything that could be related to your mission here.

With that done you set out for the caves, informing the rest of the group of your discoveries inside. As you approach the entrance, you can already feel something is wrong with this place. It’s like magic, but… WRONG somehow. You’re not the only one who notices. Liam, Katherine and Raphael shudder as well, and even a mundane like Nathan seems to be a tad nervous. The only one who doesn’t notice a thing is Blake, being his ever cheerful self.

The entrance itself is unremarkable, but you notice it’s heavily overgrown with plants, and there’s not even a buzz of insects around. You must have already passed through the wildlife wards, you figure.

Inside, you light your electronic torches, and find that despite the darkness, the walls are overgrown with plants, but you can’t say you’ve ever seen any of that kind before.

“Summer court plants.” Raphael whispers. “Always growing, fighting against the stagnation of the Winter court.”

“They dangerous?” Liam growls.

“No, though they might try to trip you once in a while.” Raphael responds.

You head deeper into the caves, intent on passing through the side of the cavern and not get too close to the heart where the magic is the strongest. You also notice your torches seem to provide less light the deeper you for some reason. The maps Milly provided you with are indeed outdated, but the change is not as drastic as she predicted. Mostly corridors shunted a few meters to the side, but once you get confused as a passageway goes a lot deeper down than it should. You backtrack for a moment to try and find another way around.

You don’t find any though, so head back through the passage. It turns out to be the right call as you somehow end up a lot closer to where you have to be than you should have. Eventually, after about forty minutes of wandering, you notice your lamps start to get more intense again. You take this as a sign that you’re moving out of the Fae magic, and soon enough you feel the oppressive atmosphere thin out as you move through a final long corridor. The back chamber shouldn’t be big enough for the full circle, you figure, but he will have probably enlarged it a bit.

Eventually, you climb a few last stairs and are faced with the big brother of the circle at your home. the metallic bands are intricately laid into the unnaturally smooth floor, weaving a pattern beyond anything else ever made. It’s glowing in all kinds of vibrant colours, though blue seems to be the most prevalent one, and you’re reminded of your early magic circle lessons. It might not have been true for the one at your place, but that one didn’t glow like this: do not cross over a magic circle that’s being used.

In the middle of it all though, sits a lone figure, with his back to you. He’s dressed in grey rags, and has long, unkempt grey hairs and beard. He seems to be cradling something large in his arms, but it just seems to be a packed bundle of something, you’re not entirely sure. Nothing indicates that he’s noticed your presence.

“Good day, Master Patterson I presume?” You politely ask. You can feel your team tense up in case something goes wrong. You wait a few seconds, but there’s no reaction. You repeat yourself, a bit louder this time, and the man in the middle stirs.

He turns his face around, and while the long beard and hair make it hard to be sure, he does seem to look like the man Wooster showed you two weeks ago. His features don’t seem to have aged a day. What draws you in are the eyes though. They’re… Defeated. There’s no spark of life, of purpose anymore.

“It’s no use.” He says. Or rather, croaks. His voice sounds incredibly dry and rasping, and you realise that he might not have said a word in the past two hundred years, being holed up here all alone. “I failed.”

“You failed?” You carefully ask.

“She’s dead. I failed. She’s dead and she’ll stay dead.” He gets up a bit more, but you can tell he’s having trouble with it. Who knows how long he’s been sitting there. He turns around slightly, and you get a clear view at what exactly he’s been cradling in his arms. It’s a skeleton wrapped in cloth. Some sort of funeral wraps you think. Looks very old. You shift your gaze back to Tobias, and you notice something in his eyes that wasn’t there before.

“Ah, Wooster. It was good of you to come. You’ve been a great help to me before.” Does he think you’re Wooster? “Come on, step forward. The circle won’t hurt you. I want to show you something.”

You oblige him, carefully walking closer. As you cross over the circle, you feel an intense buzzing throughout your body. The magic here feels… Alive, and on the edge. You reach Tobias, and he grins at you. “See Wooster? Isn’t she beautiful?”

He looks down at the skeleton he’s holding. “Isn’t she worth it all? I never told you what it was I was doing. And you never asked. I’m grateful for that, Wooster, so I’ll tell you now. It’s her. It’s all her. It always was.” Tears are rolling down his cheek now. “It was always about her. She was beautiful. She was perfect. But she died. I couldn’t stop it. There was nothing I could do. I felt so powerless, as if I was but a toddler. The Order stood by and did nothing. It was for the greater good they said. But I figured I could bring her back.”

“AND I CAN!” Suddenly he flares up, his sorrow replaced by rage. “I can and I will bring her back! I have to! All this work. All these years. It must be possible! It… Must… Be…” And with that, he starts sobbing again.

You have no idea how to deal with a person driven insane by grief, and something tells you Katherine hasn’t had anyone on this scale either. He doesn’t even seem to notice them though. He’s barely aware of you right now, as he keeps babbling, switching between vowing to bring ‘her’ back, telling you or perhaps more likely himself that he’ll succeed, and lamenting that he failed.

Given how powerful and ancient he is, I'd expect he has a plethora of passive and active mental defenses that would be triggered if we tried anything on his mind.

You try your best to adopt Wooster’s mannerisms as you talk to Tobias. You figure it’ll help put him at ease a bit, as they seemed pretty close. “It’s ok master Patterson. I’m here to help you.”

“You shouldn’t. You’ve already done so much more than what I should have asked of you. Than what was reasonable for you to do. You stuck with me through the years. Years of pointless research in that god-forsaken cellar! You fed me, took care of me. More than any friend has ever done, you were there for me. And in a final, selfish act, I asked you to stay with me beyond your death.” He goes quiet, and he looks up at you, a puzzled look on his face. Suddenly his eyes seem to focus a bit more.

“Wait, I sealed you in that house, Wooster. You can’t be here. Are… You’re not Wooster, are you?” Some lucidity seems to be surfacing again, as he carefully examines you. He doesn’t seem to be startled, scared or angry. Just… Curious. As if you’re an oddity he’s never seen before.

Mentioning the Order after that tirade against how they let her die for the greater good may not be a good idea.

I'd think him knowing his little joke in the shack caused some chaos for the order should bring some amusement to him.

He's also kind of insane and more likely to latch on to the Order being mentioned.

And don't mention the order...
Now that I think of it, he might come to a logical conclusion that only an agent of the order has a real chance of meeting Wooster and tracking him all the way up to this circle.
We should watch our words and prepare a good ruse

“No, master Patterson, but I do know him. He helps me now as he helped you before. He’s the main reason I found you, and honestly, I think he'd love to talk to you again after all this time.”

“You found Wooster? How is he?” He asks.

“He’s doing well. He’s helping me keep the house in order, and makes us food every day.” You want to mention the other things he helps with, but decide that with his earlier ranting at the Order, you’d better avoid that topic.

“Hmm, that’s good to hear. He’s not too bitter with what I’ve done, is he?” Tobias has a guilty look on his face. It seems he does really regret what he did.

“Oh no, he enjoys it, actually. Even when we think we don’t really need him, he comes up with ways to be even more useful. He’s amazing, all things considered.”

Tobias smiles warmly. “Now, if you’re not Wooster, and now that I take a good look at you, I suppose you aren’t. You don’t really look like him at all, who are you?”

yeah I'm not lying to the super powerful mage that can make magical circles beyond anything anyone has ever recorded.

You figure you don’t have much choice now. Lying to the (at least) three hundred year old magus who made the most complex magical circles ever recorded doesn’t seem like a smart idea. “I’m Michael Weston, I’m with the Order.”

You carefully observe him as you say it, and make sure to pay attention to emotions you feel around him. He’s conflicted. Angry on one hand, but on the other… Home-sick? That’s something you didn’t expect.

“I see. So you followed the trail.” There’s a defeated tone to his voice. You nod.

“Then the past has caught up with me. I did fail.” He sighs, and lets go of the skeleton, carefully laying it down to the ground. “Goodbye my dear.” Suddenly he laughs. A short bark of laughter at first, but soon after he’s hysterical. You stand there, stunned, unsure what to do. After a while, the laughter turns to crying again.

“You know what the saddest part of this all is?” He asks at you in a mixture of a laugh and a sob. “I forgot her name. After all this time. I forgot her-“ He collapses, sobbing to the ground. You feel like he’s still more conscious than at the start, but not as much as when he was questioning you.

You begin to think where to take this. You doubt he’s sane enough to release back into the world, but the Order might not be the ideal place for him either. Whether it be them prying into his arcane knowledge or him getting bad memories and going mad. He's not as volatile towards the Order as you initially thought, but it might still be a bad idea in the long run.

Hell, you’re not even sure whether you can get him out of this cave, or if he even wants to.

>1. Leave him here. You can tell the Order you didn’t find anything.
>2. Leave him here, but inform the Order. They’ll deal with this somehow.

Can we use the linked portals to teleport to each other? Was that ever stated, or am I imagining things?
>>
>>40934094
They're magical circles, they're not portals. As far as you know there's no element of teleportation involved in them, but you could ask him.

You figure the safest first step is to try and get him to your house. “Would you like to see Wooster again?” You ask him.

“Wooster? Oh, yes, my old friend. I… I think I’d like that. Yes. But then we have to go all the way back to the mansion. That’ll take a few days of walking, or do you have horses?” He tries to get up, but it quickly becomes clear that his atrophied legs can’t properly support him. With your help though, he manages to get upright.

“So, I suppose that means your circle can’t teleport us to the previous one?” You ask, mostly to keep his mind occupied.

“Hmmm, no, but now that you mention it I suppose it is a good feature. I’ll add that in the next one.” You dread to think how huge that one would be. This one is already a good 60 meters in diameter. You think he must have magically reinforced the cave because otherwise the whole thing would have collapsed on itself.

“But we’re going to the previous one now, where Wooster is.”

“Oh Wooster. My poor Wooster. He was such a young lad when he came to my doorstep. Only one to answer the ad the paper, had no choice but to take him in really.” You carry him further and further away from the circle, which doesn’t seem to change a bit. Tobias himself doesn’t even notice your friends, or even acknowledge them when Nathan and Blake grab hold of him to take over from you. They drag him all the way back to the cars, all while he’s babbling on about whatever topic you reach him. You mostly find out inconsequential snippets of his and Wooster’s life in the mansion. It seems to be a time he treasured.

As you put him into the mini-van, he perks up a bit. “Oh, carriages eh? And fancy magical horseless ones even! You must be high up to get such a privilege!” He doesn’t exactly seem to be in touch with the last two hundred years of technological advancement. Even more than that, since they actually had some cars already 200 years ago.
>>
The ride back is mostly the same, and you’re honestly glad when you’re home and he shuts up. It’s about noon by now, and Nathan and Blake drag him into the common room. Wooster immediately appears next to him.

“M-Master Tobias?” You never thought you’d see your house being emotional, but here he is, fighting back tears. He gives you a bit of a pleading look, and you quietly tell the rest of the team to leave them be. You head to the dining room and eat, while you ponder your next move.
