Second Verse, Part 13

It is the Year of Our Lord, 1135

You are Wilhelm, Lord of Ramla.

And you were hosting an important guest, the archbishop of Trier. In your youth the archbishop of Trier had been a different man. Meginher. A mostly harmless individual who had done little and less to improve his surrounding domain. Albero was different. He was a proactive sort, advancing the cause of his domain and elevating the importance of his station. Your father was proud to serve him, unlike the uneven feelings but steadfast service he had shown Meginher.

As guests went the man was not hard to accommodate. Good food and flattery went far to put you on his good side, and your father kept all cutting remarks he might have far from the archbishop's ears. He did not engage in the sabotage of his eldest son that you had feared.

Your father however was not so easy a guest. He bullied your servants and dictated the life of your siblings. Mathilde he had given the strap and she had run into your room a crying mess, unable to sit down for a day. Hugo was doing his level best to avoid the man but was occasionally dragged into his service, often waiting upon him at dining hours.

Luckily he tried to make no games with you. Respect for your rank if nothing else.

His women took up a solar. Your mother Brun and Hugo's mother Unna. They had not been close before, but your mother was of such a fragile state she found support only from your father's paramour. A naturally kind woman only just approaching thirty, you do not know why she tolerates a man like your father.
>>
The other members of the archbishop's entourage made their presence known. Sir Paulus Heinrici was a Prussian-born soldier in his service, and spent many a day beating most of your own knights around the practice yard. Some called him 'Petros' or Sir Stone. He never flinched or showed any change in expression, though he had a dry wit about him. Some thought him unfeeling but Ibrahim explained to you that it was an accident of birth that had left his face half-frozen.

Father Desmond was much in the Archbishop's company, oft lamenting the fact that many of the common people of the Levant did not follow the teachings f the Bishop of Rome, aligning instead with either Constantinople or Alexandria. The Archbishop promised to send your priest some assistance. One was a common ground lecture to the people of Ramla, another was a gift of some money to go towards building a proper church on its grounds. Desmond took his responsibilities seriously, and was much in the township looking to bring people back to the light of god.

It was a couple of weeks into their stay when a ragged band showed up on your doorstep. They were a thirsty lot with a pinched hunger in their eyes, the sun and sand making rags of once fine garments. A family of Jews led by a man named Yusuf, come appealing for your protection. They had been expelled from Nablus. They were merchants by trade, and had all their goods confiscated upon their ejection from the Nablus community. In exchange for your protection they would tithe you a monthly percentage of their income.

Accept them but keep a close eyes on them. Wait.. isnt Yusuf the arabic version of Joseph ?
>>

It's one of many variants of the Hebrew Yossef. Like most ethnic groups it isn't uncommon for Jews to adopt the style of name from the dominant culture.

Ah. Fair enough. Well you know what they say. You cant build a succesful city without a handful of "good" jews.

Looks like no sleep tonight.
>>
You agree to host the Jews, but made sure they were established under the supervision of the Xenophanes the Reeve and Sir Etienne. Yusuf was grateful, and gifted to you thirty pfennings worth of goods in immediate tribute, hidden among the rags they wore to prevent attracting the eye of would-be-bandits and other miscreants of the high roads. He also gave to your household service his daughter Rachel, a woman of about sixteen, and his niece Salima, daughter of his brother Shlomo and of a like age with Rachel.

> +20 monthly income

Not all were happy with your acceptance of Jews into your community, even with provisions. Xenophanes handed you a formal letter from the community protesting the admittance of Jews into Ramla, but the issue was not pushed. Etienne expressed displeasure. 'They are as like to join cause with Mohmed as Christ, and do not take up arms in Christian defense' he said over a wine cup one night.

Again though, your decision was accepted, and before long the Jews were becoming enmeshed into the Ramlan community.

With the archbishop you spoke in private on matters of Ascalon. He seemed pleased with the idea. The archbishop had a warrior bent, and well liked the idea of fighting the Moslem, though his interest was closer to home. Particularly the Sicilian aea where many Muslims were harboured under the banner of the unruly King Roger, who made common war against the Italian peninsular. He said it was expected that the Pope would call on Lothair soon to intervene, which troubled you some as both German and Sicilian troops may be necessary for your own war.

"If only Christendom could stop bickering among each other we might sweep the field of the Saracen," Orlando said over a lobster dinner, knights and nobles conferring upon the subject.

"Do not think the Saracen isn't saying the same thing right now," Sir Stone remarked, "Whoever is the first to unite will be the ultimate victor in this conflict."
>>
"If Muslims were the only concern to Europe mayhap, but we've still pagans in the north," your father said.

"Hmm, Prussia has a surplus of heathens that need conversion or the sword," Sir Stone agreed, offering your father a slice of pork.

"Asking Germans to unite is like asking the tide to retreat. It will happen by the grace of god or the force of nature, no man can achieve it," the archbishop spoke through a mouthful of crab, most inelegant, but his words could only bring agreement from the Germans present. The idea of a single kingdom or empire called Germany was the dream of mad men.

"Better to put Germans against Saracens than be dragged into another Italian affair," Sir Etienne said.

"Roger is half a Muslim," Albero said, "The conflict is one and the same."

That made you pause above your plate, as you began to break the shell of your own lobster.

"I would not go so far your holiness," you said, pouring the man a drink. He took it happily. "Roger is a man looking to make his mark upon the world. A Norman tradition. And he has never been soft on the enemies of Christendom. He simply knows the value of an individual. I myself have a Muslim physician in service. An intelligent if ungodly man. They might be wrong on matters spiritual, but they are well learned on matters temporal. It would be unwise to ignore their advantages in such an area."

"You claim to know Roger's mind?" Albero asked, swirling the red in his cup. If he was offended by Ibrahim's employment he voiced none of it.

You shrugged. "We have made an acquaintance, and agreed on somethings, disagreed on others. Either way you should be aware that Roger has committed aid to our capture of Ascalon. Do not be too quick to think him a friend of the Saracen. It is lamentable that he has been drawn into a feud with men that hide behind papal authority, but do not confuse his quarrel with Italians as a quarrel with God's Church."

The archbishop considered your words before emptying his cup. He held it forth so that you might pour another. Which you did. It was only polite. He sipped at that one. "Perhaps it is not right we should be outshone by Roger Half-Muslim in this," he said, rubbing his belly, "I will speak with Lothair on my return and petition him to send troops, either way I think I can spare some soldiers of my own. It is not dignified to send such men against fellow Christians when the Muslim is in the field." His eyes turned to Sir Paulus the Stone in particular, who inclined his head.

Then he looked back to you. "What say you to five hundred men-at-arms or so? Honest sons of the Rhineland."

>>
>>40937871
Still 8-10 till that. A lot can happen. All this outside support might make some of the nobles of the holy land nervous but on the same time it wont weaken them so they can focus on the Turks.
>>
"I would be happy to accept them," you said, "Under my banner."

The archbishop nodded. Disunity was the flaw of Christian armies. You did not want this coalition being composed of too many factions, and the more men directly under your command the better your chance of advancing your claim. Ascalon was near captured by the men that had liberated Jerusalem decades ago. It was a failure of leadership that had seen it remain under Saracen control.

The dinner ended and you all retired for the night. You escorted the archbishop to his door and left him in the custody of your father before returning to your own chambers. There you fell into your fire-side chair and watched the flames flicker. Chihirizahd rubbed your neck, easing the knots that were forming there. Command was not an easy thing. You were happy to have such a companion who knew how to relax you.

You drew her around and into your lap, enjoyed her by the fireside, delighting in the laughs you drew from her.

You are Hugo of Ramla, squire to Lord Wilhelm.

And it was your birthday. Your second one in the Holy Land. You checked your face in a well polished bronze plate. A wispy blond mustache covered your upper lip and soft strands of blond down covered your chin. It wasn't a beard like your brother had begun to wear, but it was a start.

Maggie had giggled about it though the other night, plucking at it.

"It's not real," she'd said, "A bit of peach fuzz."

That had injured your pride a little, not enough to stop you from pulling Maggie into the straw though. You'd been stealing a lot of time with her in the stable loft. It had left you with little sleep. You weren't complaining. She was well satisfying a girl, and you well satisfied her.

Still. The way she giggled at your attempt at a beard had stung. A man has his pride.

You decide to keep it. Time would see it grow out more. And to be honest you liked it, damn everyone else.

You dressed for the day and went out for breakfast. Jacques ate with Tancred, the man-at-arm was listening to the boy complain about girls. Jacques had a swollen eye, a fist for being hung over the other day. You had known something would happen soon the way he drank. Your friend did not speak on the bruise, instead grumbling about the way the women of the household carried on.

"They rule here," he muttered, spooning food through a bruised jaw, "Lord Wilhelm should put them in their place, starting with his sister. Boy did her daddy make her howl though. That's how you keep girls in line." You sat across from him with your own bowl and he offered you a smile.

"I've daughters," Tancred said, "And I'd never do as Sir Wilhelm did. A mother should be the one to bring girls into line." He nodded to you. "Maybe when you have children you'll have a different opinion, but its hard to put hands upon them. For me at least."

Jacques snorted. "Soft discipline leads to soft habits, that's what master says," he said, and touched his bruised eye.

Tancred's eyes lowered. "I might have a word with your master on that," he said, finishing his bowl. He gave you both a wave of farewell before heading off on his duties.

It was about that time your mother arrived. You flinched instinctively lest she smother you again. Jacques perked up when she walked over. A sunny grin for you both and she sat beside you with a hot bowl.

"Good morning and happy birthday to you my lovely boy," she said, kissing you on the cheek. You squirmed. "To think its been fourteen years already." She sighed, taken by feminine sentimentality.
>>
"Birthday?" Jacques crooked a brow. "We'll have to celebrate with some wine." He made a drinking gesture. That was probably a bad idea considering his bruises.

Your mother placed an arm around your shoulder and gave you another kiss. "You make me so proud. And your father as well." Your gut clenched. Father had not spoken to you much beyond barked commands.

It was your birthday. Your brother had remembered it and relieved you of duties, giving them to Shit For Brains instead. You had the day free and wondered what you might do with it.

You decide to head into town. Jacques accompanies you, looking to avoid Sir Etienne.

Ramla was much busier than it was when you first arrived, and not just because of the Jews. The constant visitors and accompanying soldiers was also starting to attract visitors in general. Pilgrims on the way to Jerusalem, finding temporary shelter behind Ramla's rebuilt walls. The people themselves seemed to have a new energy, the Ramlan's often gossiping about the new lord, the inventions being assembled by Achilles on the field, the troubles of the garrison. And the townsfolk were starting to feel very urbane as a church was being built for them by German coin.

It was just stone foundation, but in a few years it would rise up a proper building.

Farm folk come in for the season took their ease at a common house. Boys played in the dirt, or fought one another in mock battle. You stood apart. Neither fully noble nor fully commoner, the other boys didn't know what to make of you and rarely invited you into their games. It did not matter. You were not a boy any more.

You stopped by the place Franz lived with the pretty widow. You hadn't seen as much of him since he had taken up with her. He sat out the front of her house, carving a block of wood into the shape of a large bear. He had a fondness for bears, kept a skin in his saddlebags, one he'd taken as a younger man. A big black thing that had been causing a mess near Koblenz.

He gave you a look as you approached. "You need to bring that idiot?" he said in German, motioning to Jacques with his carving knife.

"I'm not an idiot," Jacques replied. You'd been teaching him German and he had been teaching you French.

Franz lowered the little carving. "This'll be my birthday gift to you when its done," he said, scrubbing at his thinning hair. "Figured you'd be too busy running after m'lord, had time to finish it."

You sat cross legged before the old man. "Wil's given me the day," you said, "Figured I'd come say hello."
>>
"Hello," Franz muttered, taking a drink of water. His woman did not like him drinking beer. He offered it to you, and you had a drink.

There wasn't much conversation offered by the man but it felt good to be back with him. He kept carving.

The sound of fighting, angry shouts, reached you. Taken by curiosity the three of you walked over to see what was happening.

One of the Jewish boys was tussling with a Ramlan boy. A girl watched with horror. One of your siser's handmaids. Rachel you think.

"What's happened?" Franz asked.

"Omar insulted Benny's sister," it was one of the amlan soldiers, George by name, that spoke, "So Benny hit him."

It was Omar that was winning the fight though, his elbows had opened a gash in Benny's chin.

You shoulder into the scrum and kick the big Ramlan boy off Benny. The skinny Jew panted, blood mixing with his beard, looking up at you through a tight pain.

"Enough," you said to Omar, who looked ready to dive right back into the fight, "The Jews here are under the protection of Lord Wilhelm."

Benny staggered off the dirt, still panting. He tasted the blood on his fingers.

"Jews! Jews!" Omar barked, "Jew is just another word for rat!"

"Fucking inbred!" Benny tried to claw his way past you, but you held him back with an arm.

You pointed at Omar, who had fists balled ready to go. "If you want a fight you can fight me," you said. Jacques made himself visible, hand to sword. You turned to Benny. "Calm down. Unless you want to get your head split open." Benny seethed but backed away. His sister took him by hand, offering you a thankful smile. You smiled back, but then broke that smile off. A pretty Jewess, but still a Jewess. And you had a woman.

"Are you a Jew lover?" Omar asked, getting into your face, "Or is it Muslim cock you suck? I remember a Muslim he-she that rode with your master. Did you suck that man-bitch's prick, or did he bugger you?"

Your head swam with outrage.

The world was a white haze.

Your fist smashed him to the ground.

"Will"

You were on top of him, fists slamming into his face.

"Keep"

Blood on your knuckles. Blood on his face.

"A"

Skin peeling. The white of bone.

"Civil"

A gurgle and white froth from the boy's mouth.

"Tongue."

It was only by physical effort that they pulled you off Omar. Franz and Jacques. Jacques looked at you with blatant terror in his eyes. You panted. And staggered over to a water barrel. You saw yourself in the water. Blood was on your face. Your mouth was wide, teeth bared. You looked like some kind of animal.

Your hand throbbed. You thought it was a snapped finger bone exposed. It wasn't. A tooth was buried in your knuckle, or part of a tooth.

"Someone get Ibrahim!" some one yelled.

"The boy is dead," George the soldier said, squatting beside Omar's corpse. He looked to you. "You've killed him."

Sickness came through your gut in a wave. You could not stomach a drink. You pushed away from the water barrel.

Omar's face was all bloodied and swollen, purple lumped. The crowd backed away from you as you slumped next to the boy. You thought you might throw up still.

"Let's get you back to the keep," Jacques pulled at your sleeve. You hadn't meant to kill him. "Come on Hugo." Omar lay very still. You hadn't meant to kill him.

You had lost your temper. You had committed a grievous sin. You sat and ignored your friend's pulling as you looked at the corpse you had made. This was murder, in your mind at least. Soon enough the soldier arrived with the constable, Tancred. The tall man-at-arms looked over the scene and clucked his tongue.

Omar's family came to collect his body. There was such a wailing of anguish from his father and mother. It set your teeth on edge. You squeezed your eyes shut. You couldn't bare to look at it. Tancred took you under the arm pit, pulled you to your feet.

"Did he attack you?" he asked. You were a pretty sight.

"No," you replied.

Tancred grimaced. "Your brother will pardon you," he said. That did little to temper your guilt.

The Jews, Benny and Rachel, their uncle Schlomo, approached. The crook nosed man had a cloth in hand, as did his son. They wet the cloth and cleaned the blood from your face. Rachel cleaned the blood from your knuckles. They were swollen from battering Omar's face.

"Thank you," they said, and bowed to you. Eyes full of regret. None more pain filled than the boy Benyamin.

What a happy birthday, you thought as Tancred and his men escorted you back to the keep. They placed you in a goal cell, iron bars, but only as a gesture to the town's folk. Tancred brought you blankets and food. A drunk sat a cell across from you, snoring loudly.

You had visitors, first your mother who cried bitterly. "Your brother won't let them hurt you," she said. Of course mum, of course, you reassured her as your gut knotted. Next was Maggie. You didn't speak. She just kissed you through the bars. She was teary as well. Last came your father.

"Well," he said, looking you up and down, "This is a fair state you've found yourself in."

You looked up at him. "Dad," you said, "Dad what can I do?"

He took a seat, gave a snuff. "I can have the archbishop grant you an indulgence," he said, "But whether or not you face mortal punishment relies on your brother."
>>

That was no comfort. It didn't untie the knot in your gut. A boy was dead because you couldn't control your anger.

"I didn't mean to do it," you said, looking to your father.

The man could only frown. "We often don't mean to do the things that cause the most grief." He said. "I wouldn't worry. He was a peasant. A nobody. Some money and a pardon for you will be enough."

"That's not justice," you said, "I killed him."

It was as if the two of you were speaking alien languages. Your father merely frowned continuously, before he rose to depart. "Get some sleep," it was the only good advice he had ever given you.

You lay on your pallet, among the comfortable blankets. Sleep wouldn't come.

The next day came and a pardon was granted. Your family was in attendance when Wilhelm made the declaration. Your mother, your father, both your sisters. Giselle had even been groomed for the occasion. Only you seemed to be taking it as a particularly grave affair, every one else seemed to think it was a formality. A trivial event. Some were even bored. You were released from Tancred's custody. There was light applause.

Your brother called you to his private chambers. He did not look as flippant now.

"That was unfortunate," he said, and offered you a kind smile, "But the boy should have known better. If he had lived I'd have had him flogged for disrespecting a member of my household, and my heir." He offered you a plate of dates. You weren't hungry.

"What now?" you asked.

Wilhelm considered that. "You should probably be away from Ramla for a while. I need to send a man to Jaffa to negotiate some trade. I'd thought to send Orlando. Get some use out of him. Perhaps you could accompany him as his squire." Wilhelm looked out the window, arms folded behind his back. "Or I suppose you can return to Germany with father, if you wish. But you can't stay here if the peace will be kept."

Your gut clenched tighter. You did miss Germany.

"I wouldn't mind going to Jaffa," you said. The sea would be nice.

Wilhelm smiled, clapped your shoulder. "While you are there I thought you might deliver a message for me," he said, drawing a letter from his desk.

"For Count Hugh?" you asked.

Wil shook his head. "For Malik," he gave it to you sealed. You tucked it away. "Best you be off as soon as possible." He took his seat and took up his quill. Your brother had been much the letter writer as of late, sending correspondence out all across the kingdom. It made him seem older, alongside the black beard that covered half his face. More mature. He gave you a last smile before you departed.

You filled your saddle bags with what you would need for the road, and pulled on your maille. It was near a week of riding and the Jerusalem high road could be unpredictable. Planning a trip to Jaffa, with all the potential dangers there in, was relaxing in a way. First checking yourself. Your equipment, your supplies. Making sure your blades were not blunt, your armour was good.

Then checking your horse. His hooves, his saddle. Making sure the straps were tied correctly. Keeping him from becoming nervous with a steadying hand.

You were near ready to go when you found your sister watching. Mathilde stood in the doorway of the stable. Hands behind her back, leaning on the frame. You frowned at her.

"Did you want something?" you asked.

She didn't answer immediately. Instead she brushed out her hair. "Just to say goodbye," she said.

And then she did something you thought odd. She hugged you. You stood very still for a second.

You close your arms around her.

It's an awkward thing at first, but then she kisses you lightly on the cheek and pulls away.

"I hope God forgives you," she said, brushing your hair from your face, "I-I will pray for you."

You smiled. For the first time all day you felt understood. You put your hands on her shoulders. "We'll have another match when I get back," you said, and kissed her forehead. You mounted your horse and she handed you your spear. You started the beast forward with a cluck of your tongue.

Orlando was waiting with a body of troops, about ten men. Sir Hector was with him.

"Good to be on the road again," Orlando said, touching the scar on his lip. You nodded. It was good.

You looked up to the battlements. Maggie watched hollow cheeked. You waved to her with your spear and she waved back. Sadly.

Few others were there to wish you farewell. Your mother, and Wilhelm's mother, but the rest had duties occupying their time. Solomon drilled troops, but took a second to raise a hand to you and a smile that vanished when the point of a spear lowered more than he liked.

The men began to depart. Orlando hummed a happy tune, which Sir Hector soon whistled. It was taken up by the man as they marched. You did not know it, but you thought it Levantine. Soon though the men were singing it as they marched through the street, waving farewell to those they knew in the crowd. Benyamin raised a hand for you as you passed, then lowered it with a guilty expression.

All the men were a merry step, happy to be traveling.

You rode more glumly.

Even as Ramla disappeared behind you that glumness did not depart.

You spur your horse ahead. Someone had to act as advanced scout, and you were in no mood to put up with Orlando's snoring. As ever, ranging ahead and being alone with nature calmed you some. Just you and bird song, the chittering of insects, the snuffling of your horse. The world rolled by with the rocking tread of hooves. You kept the band of soldiers in view, but you were happy to remain separate. Even as night came and that open blue sky closed its shutters. The starlight, the white milky bands of stars overhead. They often stole your breath.

It made everything seem so small. Sitting beside a fire, knees tucked under you, staring up at the great black empty. It went on and on, stars layered atop one another.

What were the stars, you often wondered. What was the black between them. They were not all white, you saw a little red glint on the horizon. The devil's eye it seemed, winking at you. Jesus had a confrontation with the Devil in the wilderness of Palestine. You wondered in the dark if he would appear to you as well, and was much relieved when he failed to appear that first night.

The high road was busier than it had been last. People travelled a little more freely. You saw a band of Templars ride past, white and red tabards, maile jangling. They kept a watchful eye on the pilgrims. One had his helm off, showing a bearded face with a single eye.

Sir Blaise. His eyes skimmed over you without recognition. And then he heeled his horse forward without concern. escorting the common folk to the Holy City.

Your own party joined the road. You still kept ahead, though Templar presence seemed secure. You past merchantmen and pilgrims. Some tagged along Orlando's retinue for safety until the walls of Jerusalem, making small trade with his soldiers.

The smell of the sea, and with it the sight of Jaffa.

There were ships beyond it in port. You set spur to side and galloped ahead, the sun in your face and the salt breeze filling your nostrils.

Horsemen rode out. A pair of Franks and a Syrian. They drew up before you.

"Who comes from Jerusalem?" Sir Barisan asked. He did not recognize you.

"Orlando Grenier, in service to Lord Wilhelm," you said, gesturing to your party still behind.

Barisan looked to the road and nodded.

"Welcome back to Jaffa," he said, clapping a maille hand to your shoulder, before riding forth to greet Orlando.

Aymal lowered his maile veil and gave you a grin.

"Hugo," he said, "We drink later, yes?"

Maybe. You gave him a nod and rode past, into the streets of the quiet port city.

Few looked up at you. Without your brother you were not so remarkable to attract attention. It was a pleasant change from the looks he would attract. You stopped at a food stall to buy a stick of meat, which you ate until you reached the keep, and waited for Orlando.

He arrived with Sir Barisan, speaking as if they were the best of friends. He dismounted, as did you. Pages came to collect your horses. You went inside a step behind Orlando.

Count Hugh waited, with him was his lovely sister Aines. He came forward to shake Orlando's hand. Moving with exuberant energy, as ever.

"Good to have you Sir," he said, "I hope Wilhelm is well?"

"Very fine," Orlando replied.

Hugh saw you and pulled you forward. "And you bring his squire. Pray, what brings you here without him?" It was not accusing, he kept a merry voice.

"I killed someone," you said quite bluntly. "He didn't deserve it. My brother thought it best I spend some time else where." Count Hugh's sister recoiled slightly at the confession, but Hugh's smile didn't slip. He just thumped you on the back.

"Things happen," he said, and then he left with Sir Orlando and Sir Hector to discuss trade deals.

You remained in the courtyard. Sir Barisan eyed you like he would a toad before departing. Aymal however swaggered over.

"Ey, we go get a drink?" he said, still grinning, "I know this good place in town. Beer and wine. Pretty girls. Very nice."

As Muslim's went Aymal was not a particularly good one.

Cause people no longer need to panic over nothing in order to force their black knight/pious templar crap on Hugo
>>
"Maybe later," you said, "I have other duties first."

Aymal waved you away as you walked into the keep proper. You made some inquiries with a servant and he directed you towards what was being called 'The Saracen Quarter'. As you approached it you noted the increase in Syrians, men but also women. Malik's band no doubt had a body of camp followers, wives and sweet hearts, the occasional child. None called out to you in greeting, though you recognized at least one from Sabeen's company.

One points you towards Malik's personal chambers, but when you arrive he is not within. The door was ajar, the chamber was decorated with carpets and cushions, incense burned in a holder giving it a jasmine fragrance..

Instead you hear a thump. A thump. A thump.

Out the window was a small garden, and set in it was an archery target. Malik was practicing his skills. Loosing shafts into the straw dummy. The warrior had built a sweat, and the dummy was near a hedgehog for the shafts that bristled from it. Malik was without his turban, showing peppered gray long black hair that fell in ringlets down his back.

He lowered his bow and a servant brought him a cup of water.

Then he saw you watching, eyes widening in surprise.

"Young master Hugo," he said, discarding his bow, "Is your brother here visiting his lord?"

You shook your head. The warrior stopped before the window. He moped the sweat from his face. He looked as if he questions but he did not speak. Instead stepping within. He drew off his outer robe, revealing his thick arms, and aired himself by untucking his tunic.

"Well, I'm sure there is a story to be told," he said, "But you have caught us a day before we are due to leave. Our time here is finished and we are traveling south. Rumour of civil war in Egypt presents an opportunity for men in my line of work." He fished a slice of pear from a bowl he kept and took a seat, inviting you to do the same.
>>
You went cross legged. Malik was a little intimidating. Not least because he was so foreign in garb and manner. There were other reasons too though. He's talent as a warrior.

"Why are you going?" you asked.

Malik smiled. "Frankish customs are interesting at first, but I have been three years among your kind. It was time I was back with my own. Some of my men are developing bad habits. That Aymal and his drink!" He threw up a hand in irritation.

You supposed that made sense. You sore missed Germany.

He poured you a cup and offered you fruit.

"So what is troubling you?" he asked. You said nothing. "Tell me or don't, but something is weighing upon you." He offered a kindly smile.

You drew the letter from your tunic and placed it upon his low set table. Malik looked, and then touched it lightly.

"If this is what I think it is," he said, "I hope your brother will not be too disappointed."

He took it up, broke the seal and unfolded it. As he read his face sunk. Once he was finished he let it drop to the table. He looked over at you, unhappy.

"Disappointment it is," he said, "I'm very sorry to waste your time boy. But my mind is set. It is to Saracen lands I travel next. South and the riches of Egypt."

You sit forward. "But we might be at war with Egypt at any time." You couldn't keep your pubescent voice from cracking. You did not want to fight Malik.

Malik smiled. "Yes, that is often the way of things. I have made war on my oldest friends while serving Frankish lords, and then made war on Frankish friends while under Saracen banners. It is not an easy thing, but it is the live I have chosen for myself. I do not wish to fight you, or your brother. If we did I would try to take you alive and keep you a comfortable hostage. But we seldom get what we want."

You frowned. It was not wrong, but you didn't have to like it.

"But can't you at least not fight against us?" you asked.

Malik looked to the heavens thinking, and then he looked back to you. "Only if Allah is merciful, but I ride where my master sends me. I shall hope we do not cross blades, and that my time is taken with this internal matter of Egypt, but I can only hope and ask Allah to make it so."

"You act like there's no choice in this," you said, thumping your leg, "Why can't you just do this one thing?"
>>
Malik chuckled. "You'll discover in time boy, that very few people have much choice in anything they do. We move to the hand of Allah, and only in a rare subtle moment are we given the chance to make a decision that might change our fate." Then he leaned close. "But tell me boy, is there a reason I should fear coming to blows with Lord Wilhelm? Is he planning something against Egypt?"

You bite the inside of your mouth. Uncertain how much you should say. You did not know all the details, but you knew enough. Wilhelm like Sir Malik, but is it wise to tell him something that could be turned against your brother?

You chew on the question. You shrug.

"As you said, who knows what might happen? I just know that my brother doesn't want to fight you."

Malik's eyes glitter, but he nods. "And I do not want to fight your brother, but as we both know. Getting what you want is a very rare thing."

As he spoke the door opened and Sabeen walked in. She was not wearing maile or mannish clothing, but had changed to clinging silk robes belted at the waist. She had an irritated expression upon her face as she fussed with the latch of a necklace.

She said something in Arabic to her father, that clipping language filled with her annoyance. Just flowing from her tongue in a stream even as she finally unlatched the necklace and cast it aside. She rattled on until she saw you sitting with her father and she stopped, lips paused mid-word. There was a silence as she blinked.

Malik smiled. "We have a guest," he said, gesturing to you, "A welcome surprise."

"Hugo," she said. You stood up. It had only been two months, but you'd had another growth spurt. You were the same height, or near enough. It felt different looking her directly in the eye.

"Sabeen," you replied, "It's good to see you."

"Are you a boy or a tree?" she asked, raising a hand, "Another year and you will be to the roof."

"Hugo has brought us an offer of employment from his master," he said, "But I had to decline."

"Well," she said, "That is a shame."

"You could came back to Ramla with me," you said, stepping closer.

Sabeen gave a very slight gasp, a hand twitch to her chest.

"Um..." you coughed, stepped back. "I mean, you could take my brother's coin and serve under his banner."

Sabeen looked to her father. "I could," she said, more to him than to you.

Malik's brow lowered. "You could," he said in a way uninviting of the prospect.

You looked from father to daughter. Sabeen had a face like hope, while Malik wore an expression of dread.

"I-" Sabeen said, "I will have an answer for you on the morrow."

She inclined her head. It was something.

Malik thanked you for your visit and handed you back Wilhelm's letter. He had a servant show you the door. He did not speak to Sabeen as you left, even when she called to him. The door closed behind you, leaving you alone in Count Hugh's hall.

You would have her answer on the morrow.

Definitely. If he and most of his company face us, and we manage to defeat them and capture him, we should treat him well, then if it's possible offer him a job at the end of the conflict.
>>
>>40941995
Hugo would have maybe had a one-shot thread and then reappeared at Ascalon.

>>40941998
He isn't stupid, that's true.

>>40942011
They help most of the time. Sometimes I do a PoV switch to do stuff Wil can't, experience things that would be contrived for Wil to experience or because Wil is frankly out of meaningful things to do without a time skip. So its a pacing thing too.

Wil isn't realistically going to be making time for a lot of the second string characters any more. Hugo and Mathilde can though.
>>
>>40942010
I figured if push comes to shove we could always capture/imprison sabeen & then use her as levrage via threats of rape/murder we'd take a hit with them & hugo for sure but if we needed to get him to cooperate well that's the nasty way

>>40942000
you do fine, it does show but its usually just spelling/grammar mostly
>>
>>40942044
>I figured if push comes to shove we could always capture/imprison sabeen & then use her as levrage via threats of rape/murder we'd take a hit with them & hugo for sure but if we needed to get him to cooperate well that's the nasty way

I'd rather not do that unless it is really really, really necessary
>>
>>40942040
>Wil isn't realistically going to be making time for a lot of the second string characters any more. Hugo and Mathilde can though.

Yeah. I will admit it was nice to see Franz again, poor sod doesnt get the attention he deserves
>>

>I figured if push comes to shove we could always capture/imprison sabeen & then use her as levrage via threats of rape/murder we'd take a hit with them & hugo for sure but if we needed to get him to cooperate well that's the nasty way

I'm not normally going to veto write-ins, but I'll let you know that would be an extremely bad idea.
>>
>>40942040
It is time for me to sleep aparantly since I shoved "all the same" in there twice in the same sentence. Have a good day/night/Aussietime HF.

I do hope we get to see Orlando find his niche and see Solomon be a bro again. Here's hoping the new squire gets some development too.
>>
>>40942060
I would be in the same mind (I barely got through the shitstorm) but it was an option

>>40942069
apparently a REALLY bad option
>>
>>40942066
Seems like he's all but retired really. And truth be told I think he's earned it.
>>
>>40942069
who would you classify as a second string character exactly?

secondly I love how we have a range in scope now on just how much we're affecting the world around us

>>40942085
but we need our Banner bearer for ascalon!
>>
>>40942102
We will just have to nominated someone else.
>>
>>40942102
hes a kyke man
>>
>>40942123
He is converted.

>>40942069

I take it the bishop has enjoyed his stay in Ramla, will he be visiting Jerusalem and if so will Wilhelm join him ?
>>
>>40942102
>who would you classify as a second string character exactly?
Essentially anyone who isn't family or a powerful noble goes in Wil's non-priority list except in special circumstances. They'll still be around and he'll interact with them, but they won't be dominating his time the way they did when he was a glorified freebooter.
>>
>>40942141
fair enough
>>
>>40942134
>I take it the bishop has enjoyed his stay in Ramla, will he be visiting Jerusalem and if so will Wilhelm join him ?
He has, and he will be traveling on to Jerusalem. If Wil wants to join him he certainly can, but it isn't expected of him.
>>
>>40942154
I would like him to. Would be good to see Iovetta and there would most likely be nobles and dignitaries from other kingdoms/realms who we could get support from. Also the Queen could confirm just how many troops, supplies and warmachine she has for Wilhelm. She promised much in the bed that is for sure.
>>
>>40941933
Just to show how much of a giant wanker I am, I can tell when the guy who hates me is around for a thread based on down votes in the archive.

>>40942044
>you do fine, it does show but its usually just spelling/grammar mostly
That can sometimes be because of literal, physical tiredness. Some threads run for +10 hours. I worry that it sucks some of the oomph out of scenes that otherwise would have been more impactful.
>>
>>40942274
>I worry that it sucks some of the oomph out of scenes that otherwise would have been more impactful.

not really most of the oomph really just gets sucked up regardless because some of us have been following you for a straight 10+ hours anyway so we can hardly fault you.
>>
>>40942274
I read the thread in which Wilhelm supposely swore an oath to grow a beard. He did no such thing

I guess it is 1 or 2 guys who really, really didnt like what happened to Zoe. Speaking of Zoe, i get the feeling Theodore is going to have something to do with Antioch. Am i correct ?

>>
>>40942311
You are incorrect, at least in regards to the immediate things unfolding in Antioch. I do have a plan for Theodore Komnenos though. Nothing to stress about, its long in the future.

>>40942373
>I do have a plan for Theodore Komnenos though. Nothing to stress about, its long in the future.

Its like you want your players to Shadowrun this quest to the ground mate. But i am looking forward to it. Dude is a high tier enemy.

So, who else has been making a Wilhelm character in Crusader Kings 2 ?

I cant be the only one, right ?

He slept with Princess Alice, Hod and married Iovetta then died of a fever. he got 3 kids with hod and 2 with Alice and managed to place Iovetta on the throne as Queen of Jerusalem.
>>
>>40942395
>Speaking of can you tell me who exactly he is, I've tried searching him but I got ditto
He's fictional, a mix of Theodore Komnenos Doukas and Andronikus I Komnenos. I thought about using a real guy, but decided it was simpler building up a fictional villain.
>>
>>40942441
So he is random Komnenos Doukas cousin #17

Could you tell us anything more about Elaine and Joyce and their land back in France ?

That will come up in the next thread.

My guess would be somewhere in mainland Greece.
>>
>>40942566
yes but the question is where? it will expand his dossier of enemies tenfold if we know exactly where.

>>40942511
he's crusader & not exactly godless
>>
>>40942394
We need to find Welf's reincarnation. It's truly a shame he died before his plot line became relevant. Imagine how glorious it would have been to have him sodomize Theodore in almost the exact same way as Theodore raped Zoe.
>>
>>40942607
He is a Crusader but it is not Zeal that brought him to the Holy Lands.

>>40942611
>tfw no crusader karling that became the dark horse for the role of HRE

>Wil +1 int, +1 lead
>Hugo +1 lead, +1 int, +1 cha

why?
>>
>>40943372
Hugo +1 lead, +1 int, +1 cha

+1 lead and +1CHA for trying to break up the fight i my guess

+1 int for not telling Malik about Ascalon

Is my guess.

Will got it because he understood he'd rather have 500 instead of 700 men if it meant they were directly under him

>>40937964
>>
Finally, Hugo's true love is coming back to Ramla, a shame about Malik though.

It was nice to see the things discussed in thread added to the storyline.

Hope Orlando doesn't fuck up getting materials/squire/falcon
>>
Guys, we still didn't showed Tripoli no love, we may need to stop by and say hello to secure some support
>>
>>40943860
What support we get from Tripoli we got through the Queen so dont worry about that
>>
>>40942470

guys, guys
please calm down and don't take any vows yet. Let's wait for Ascalon
>>
>>40943915
Dont worry. It is just a bethroeal. Nothing finally.
>>
>>40943860
while tripoli may be worth it, its not a sure thing as they have both Zengi & Byzantium to contend with

>>40943945
>Hugo
>Betrothal

for what purpose we need details before we arrange any sort of marriage.

besides Hugo is really a wandering man not marriage material

Hugo & maggie OTP!
>>
>>40944000
>we need details before we arrange any sort of marriage.

I think that is what we will get in next thread according to HF >>40942470

Besides. He can just be in the field as often he can only occasional visiting if that is what he wants.

You just have a thing for irish readheads anon
>>
>>40943945

I'm against even a bathoeal before Ascalon, we should give him time.
It's not final but it would be a pain to dissolve it in the future without losing support
>>
>>40944036
While i understand you wanting a better match we just have to be careful. Playing the waiting has screwed us over more than once.
>>
>>40944021
I wont lie that is part of the appeal

honestly Hugo's young even by Feudal standards so I don't think he'd be leaping at the chance for it, anyway like I said he's not really husband material I mean did you see what he did when he was angry?

>>40944048
this is low stakes compared to Zoe & Ascalon
>>
>>40944048
As jumping too early has it also, there's no real reason to engage him at the moment and I fear it would bite us in the ass in the future
>>
>>40944054
>>40944055

>he's not really husband material

Compared to like 90% of the nobility he is. Hopefuly Elaine is important enough for it to not feel like a waste.

I really dont want to piss off the Templars
>>
>>40944067
we've done very little to piss them off you're being paranoid, besides Joyce likes Hugo now so it's less of an Issue

you're the same anon that thinks she's Eleanor of Aquitaine aren't you?
>>
>>40944054
>he's not really husband material

Its easy. You just put a couple of babies in her and the fuck off to somewhere shagging your Saracen and Irish lovers while fighting raiders.
>>
>>40944085
Thought she was yes. I was luckily corrected on that note.
>>
>>40944089
b-but Hugo is pious! cheating bad!
>>
>>40944141
>b-but Hugo is pious!

He really isnt.
>>
>>40944148
well how isn't he? honestly he could find or lose his faith as it stands

personally I like the idea that he's at a crossroads like when Wilhelm was Imprisoned, one leads to being a pious sword saint the other leads to being a black knight, defender of Jerusalem devoid of faith but doing the right thing.
>>
>>40944067
It feels rushed and out of place for me, Joyce is already on our side and I don't think it would matter. I mean Hugo never spared the girl any thouhg, she`s just that girl he fucked when he was drunk.
>>
>>40944200
>one leads to being a pious sword saint the other leads to being a black knight, defender of Jerusalem devoid of faith but doing the right thing.

That is some very extremes you are jumping to there. Maybe he should just be Hugo ?

>well how isn't he? honestly he could find or lose his faith as it stands

Well right now he is fucking that irish noble girl. He consort with muslims and his visit to Jerusalem and after gave him a healthy dose of reality right in his face.

He is not going to lose his faither completely nor go full on Templar Knight over such things.

>>40944225
It has nothing to do with love. But you cant just get caught fucking a noblegirl like that and not expect there to be consequences
>>
>>40944239
well maybe not straight away but at least as far as branching development goes.

>>40944239
>It has nothing to do with love. But you cant just get caught fucking a noblegirl like that and not expect there to be consequences

there would have been consequences (he may have been castrated if he was caught) but he luckily managed to worm his way out of that & Joyces wrath by putting on a brilliant show in Sidon.
>>
>>40944200
I don`t like to think of him in such a black and white way. He certanly has a better moral compass then will and I fear he will lose his head and kill some allys when the raping and pillaging of gerusalem begins but I don`t attribute those to his faith. He already did some rather unchristian acts and will probably do more.
>>
>>40944278
Ascalon, not jerusalem
>>
>>40944278
again read >>40944268

its not a black and white place just a road for development
>>
>>40944268
>well maybe not straight away but at least as far as branching development goes.

Be careful when thinking like that. HF doesnt do "paths" or "branching" like its a datingsim or a RPG
>>
>>40944348
direction then point being character devlopment
>>
>>40944505
Yeah but it is based on assuming Hugo will continue focusing down that path ignoring all forms of nuance.
>>
>>40944505
We already estabilished that he is against rape of any kind and his pretty much ok with fucking outside of marriage.
I like to develop him but i`m A little worried to tie it to religion
>>
>>40944549
I never said the path/direction we take could branch further.

>>40944583
he's character will tie it to religion regardless because it has that much of an influence on his life
