For eons you have traveled the cosmos, like a speck of dust in the wind. Your limitless potentials and mind have remained dormant for all but the briefest moment at the beginning of your existence.

You are the spore.

Every speck of life in your tiny existence screams out for you to achieve one specific goal: Grow.

Perhaps in time you may desire other things, but for now you need strength.

--
As the room around you fills with air and the overhead lights shine, you feel your faculties return to you for the first time since a birth you barely remember.

You've only a vague sense of the world around you in your current state, and you feel that there is a biological presence among you. As you try to chase your potential new host a wall that had not been there before blocks your way. Suddenly you and the air around you are sucked out of the room into a corridor of rushing air.

Now you must go forth and grow!

As you circulate through long and narrow corridors you sense many lifeforms pass you by. You may exit this flow wherever you choose and infect a host.

Now, make your choice!
>You sense a weak presence in a sterile room. An easy host to conquer, though it may require you to fix it up afterward.
>A great many simple lifeforms fed by powerful lights, feeding them with a constant supply of energy.
>Many advanced lifeforms mill about in a room, along with some lower lifeforms and a couple simple ones.

You exit the flow of air into a room filled with potential hosts.

As you try to sense the lifeforms around you, you realize there are small creatures among the advanced lifeforms, as well as a couple of simple lifeforms that seem to be partially enclosed and growing out of some sort of container.

Many of the advanced lifeforms appear to be engorging themselves of nutrients, while some are engaged with one of the simple lifeforms in some sort of fun ritual.

Your being is vibrated by the mass of noises.

What do you do?
>Attempt to infect one of the advanced lifeforms as it eats.
>Attempt to infect one of the lesser beings.
>Infect one of the simple lifeforms.

>Attempt to infect one of the advanced lifeforms as it eats.

You float into the gaping maw of the advanced lifeform as it consumes its food. You find yourself bobbing and being pushed around as it eviscerates its meal, and then you are swallowed down into the pits of its being.

You find yourself in an enclosure of bile and acid, but to you this almost feels like a home!

You begin to absorb the nutrients around you and consume to your heart's content. Your mass grows and your mind with it. This body will be yours for the taking!

How will you spread yourself?

(Nicely done)

You spread yourself throughout the body with an expert hand, as if the knowledge to do so had been imprinted onto your very being.

It takes some time, but very little. Before the being drifts off to slumber you finish taking it, and like a flick of the switch you are in control.

The mind of the being is yours to control, and its personality lays dormant beneath your spore might.

You are given access to a wealth of knowledge. These "humans," as they call themselves, have two legs and two arms. They eat most anything organic as they so choose. This one in particular possesses a great wealth of knowledge, but as of yet you can't fully comprehend it.

When you force your new body awake, you are in a small room. You look to the right and see a small window, and outside is the blackness of space. The room itself has simple furnishings: A bed, some pictures, a couple books on a shelf, a dresser of clothing for your naked body, a locker of possessions, and a door to some sort of public area.

Infecting it's body first may lead to detection by the other lifeforms, we must take control first, and find a secluded area to complete our assimilation.

How much do we comprehend our form's memories? At the level of "layman knowledge" of things, or only abstract concepts? Are we even fully sapient?
>>
>>40955827
You understand basic things about humanity itself. You have a fantastic layman understanding of all things, and the ability to push beyond that with exposure will be easy.

Advanced knowledge and more abstract subjects you still struggle to understand. Things of a more academic nature, like the sciences. Some simple studying or further growth might help you in that regard.

I saw a flood infection form, Your a Dick OP I've gotta post now and ensure the spore spreads.

>Inspect the books
>>
>>40955879
I didn't explain that well.

You have a layman understanding of the things that your host understood, and a good understanding of the biology and physiology of your host.

If you attempt to speak to someone, for instance, you would have little trouble actually doing so. Whether or not you could speak proper English is up for debate. You might not want to hold an engaging conversation at this time.

On one shelf in particular you see that there are some educational materials related to the field of - the word "engineering" comes to mind.

>Study the engineering manuals.
You reach out and grab a manual about modern reactor maintenance and space engineering.

The knowledge before you is complicated, but you begin to take to it. You understand that the reactor of the vehicle you inhabit is powered by some sort of matter-antimatter reactions, and that the immense power from doing so is necessary to generate the field that allows vessels to enter what the humans call "subspace," where ships can travel beyond a constant they refer to as "radiation speed." Or was that "light speed?"

You feel your mind swell with knowledge you have gained! (Learned: Basic engineering, basic subspace theory)

Antimatter is the most efficient form of energy creation.
Warp speed is universal for space faring fiction.
Sunspace is relatively common, especially on a board built as containment for 40k threads
And a futuristic civilization isn't going to rap their knuckles against a door, when doorbells are a thing.

That said, I hope it's Star Trek as well.

You reach for the war novel and begin to lift it from its shelf, but then a console behind you beeps once more. You turn and walk to the console as the book falls to the floor.

Before you is a technological device. You search your host's mind and recognize it as a communications console. Your hand reaches out and you activate it.

A face appears before you with a readout of information overlayed above parts of the image. It says: "Chief Engineer, Alan Strausman." You suspect he is further along in human life, and you recognize in the back of your mind that this is your host's "superior," in terms of "rank." You suspect this indicates that he is a greater human than your host, but his knowledge seems to indicate that he is in charge. You fail to see the distinction.

"Hey, Richardson! I've been trying to reach you for a couple minutes now. I know you're trying to catch some zebras over there, but the coolant system picked up a flag in the 'B' Junction. Can you grab your tools and head over there? Christine thinks it's just another short in the air sensor, but I think that the piece of shit just came loose again."

Your spore reaches into the depths of his host's mind to learn his knowledge of this vessel, and you learn a great deal!

In fact, you realize of fascinating places beyond this 'B' Junction, and forget all about your duties.

You learn of a place called "medbay" and proceed toward it. You head in the direction you were intended, but detour at a room with a white + over a field of green.

You enter, and find the medbay vacant except for a weak human being hooked up to a variety of tubes and machines. The lights flicker on as you enter.

(Holy crap at a carnival!)
You approach the human and immediately recognize him from before you had acquire your host. He was the weak signal you detected before.

It doesn't take long for you to recognize that this human is dormant and in a state known as "comatose." Your host had little dealings with this individual prior to him entering his current state, but he appears to have been one of the atmospheric technicians before he suffered an incident that damaged his mind.

You can infect the comatose human, and it would take even less effort than it took you to steal away this healthy one. However, the state of its mind leaves you in question. It may take some effort to repair.

Your engineering body dons his work gloves and temporarily blocks the air flow from the outgoing coolant system pipe. With time being of the essence, he quickly pulls the sensor from its housing and inspects it.

You see that the sensor is, in fact, short-circuited. A common fault with this kind of reactor design, as the coolant from the chamber can sometimes overheat and melt solder on the electronics. Your host has performed this duty many times, and yearns to work on a well-made reactor.

Your engineering body solders the connections again and inserts the sensor. Its readout lights up green, and you renew the flow.

You look around the bay. The two large cylinders of plants are striped with different varieties to grow different kinds of food-bearing plants. A healthy variety. There are a couple vats of a liquid marked as "fertilizer," and a large vat of water. Both vats are built into the wall with a small window and nozzles for each, as well as a tube from each container that leads to both of the hydroponics units. It would appear that the units are mostly automatic.

The trees are a particularly interesting specimen, because they have a hard shell. You accidentally pluck a piece of it off, but it appears to be inconsequential. Both varieties of plants fascinate you because of the simplicity of their existence, and seeming desire to do nothing but grow and spread.

To you these simple lifeforms almost feel like long-lost ancestors. Of course, you are far more advanced than this vegetation.

You start to take spore cells from your body and infect the plants. Each is easy to control, but their lack of a developed brain does little for bolstering the power of your mind. The trees prove to be a bit more difficult, however. Truly a marvel!

(Goodness gracious great balls of... vegetation)

The physiology of the trees make them... difficult. You're not entirely sure how to infect them- at first.

After inspection, and after feeling the other plants become a part of you, you begin to realize that you can infect it through the soil beneath it. You manage to insert cells into the soil to be absorbed by the tree, and in time they take root.

You feel that taking the entire bay's plants into your control strains your control, but you feel that if those plants could grow you could put them to great use.

The nature of these plants is also a wealth of knowledge, and you feel you could even apply some aspects of it to your human hosts. (Knowledge: Spore-Human Morphing (Basic), Plant Physiology (Basic), Bark Skin, Photosynthesis, Nutrient/Water Absorption)

Seems we've hit a tie between the terminal and feeding the plants. I'm going to take a moment to explain the latter option.

If you feed the plants you'll essentially be over-fertilizing them with space-age fertilizer. The effect of this will mean that you are able to grow the plants and basically infest the hydroponics bay. This will be a mixture of the effects of the solution and your own power.

The benefit is that you'll loosen their grip on your control as they grow and combine, as well as their ability to potentially grow throughout the rest of the ship over time. Of course, the crew would notice the plants going out of control.

>Consensus shifts back and forth, and barely errs one way or the other.
Let's start with the hydroponics terminal, and then shift over to the more permanent choice.

You sit your engineer down at the hydroponics terminal and see a set of various controls for the plants including light intensity, ambient temperature, and controls for the system that feeds the plants fertilizer and water.

You also see that there is a small seed dispenser next to the terminal with seed packets for every plant in the room.

The terminal also contains a databank with information about the plants, but nothing you didn't already discern from your infection.

One interesting detail is that there's a glass partition that can be dropped to prevent access to the plants, so that the aeration system won't fill the entire bay with chemicals.

What would you like to do?

Can the engineer use atmospherics tech taken from the other guy's brain.

We could put spores in the air supply maybe.

Also it's entirely unclear how this 'control' mechanic works, and what increases or decreases its limits, and what counts against that limit.
>>
>>40960025
>Feed the plants from the terminal, which will eventually alert the crew to a strange occurrence
Since we have an engineer why not disconnect communications from other people and sabotage the engines?
>>

>>
>>40960152

>>40960152
It would be very beneficial for us to get to where the ship is going simply because there would be more vectors to infect there, If we can get there with the ship in relatively good shape, no one will suspect when the open the airlocks and corruption spews forth.
>>
>>40960025

Leave the plants. They only work for a back up for us if they are not detected.

This quest is a classic case of an infection based game, us trying to spread an infection, and the crew trying to fight back. The crew will not respond until we are detected, and if we are detected, at least with present resources, we could very easily be defeated.

I suggest leaving to observe more human interactions and modes of behavior. This will hopefully keep us from acting strangely enough to be detected for the time being.

If we don't do this, I would suggest trying to see about infecting the medbay or a doctor. Any fight back against us will almost certainly involve trying to synthesize a cure and taking the medbay offline would be a big boost. Infecting a doctor could also allow us to easily spread our spores (contaminated "vaccinations" or the like).

It's fine now, but more plants would be bad. If we wanted to infect a new batch of plants there'd be a problem. But there're no more plants and non-brain lifeforms around(pets have brains, believe it or not), so it does not matter much now. The lessened load would not help us that much in our current situation, is what I gathered. What would matter is us having a plant growth to order around.

You inspect the seed dispenser. It keeps the seeds neatly filed in their individual packets and spits them out upon request. You could infect the individual seeds and plant more of them, but infecting all the seeds would require you taking them all from the dispenser, opening their packets, and infecting them.

>>40960145
>Can we use atmospherics knowledge to spread spores in the air?
Now that you have access to a bay of plants it's feasible. However, you would need the atmos tech to do it, or you would need the atmos tech to help your engineer steal his stuff.

>how does this "control" mechanic work?
(Basically, for every brain you control you're given additional capacity to control other beings. With plants, they lack any sort of fancy brain parts- they're really quite stupid, and their collective biomass as they exist underperforms in providing expansion for your mind. As their biomass grows it allows you a miniscule increase. Hopefully that makes sense.)

Consensus seems to be in leaving the plants as they are for now. They're not going anywhere, right?

At present you have control over the plants in hydroponics, an engineer, and a "comatose" atmospherics technician.

At this moment you feel that your engineer is "hungry," as he puts it. A sensation you understand well. After infecting so many bodies and doing so much activity, a desire for food has risen.

Your engineer leaves the hydroponics bay and he turns to head toward the common area. On the way you notice a terminal proudly display "0508 | 5:08 a.m." It's almost "morning," if such a thing existed on a ship.

As you enter the common area you notice that Martin is no longer here, but the room has become "clean." It also smells like one of the lemon plants you infected.

You approach the food dispensary and acquire some sort of glazed confectionery in a plastic package. Your host had a deep appreciation for these, despite their price. When you insert his ID to acquire the food item you see it claim that it has removed some sort of currency from his account. He doesn't have a lot of money, it would seem.

You sit and eat your meager snack, and as you do you see a man you recognize as the ship's chef stumble from his domicile. He seems to barely be able to walk as he shambles toward the kitchen, not even noticing you. Perhaps he is unwell?

You and Card work well together. You prepare ingredients for Card per his request, and he takes them and cooks them up. You both prepare a "staple breakfast" as he calls it: Eggs (made from a yellow liquid he retrieves from the fridge), pancakes topped with day-old hydroponics berries, and a small slice of something you know as "ham" (but isn't actually real ham).

As you're helping him, you engage him in conversation from time to time.

"So Card, how 'bout that space weather? Lovely plasma storms right?"

Card jumps slightly at this. "P-Plasma storms?! Oh heavens no! Please tell me there aren't any more of those!

You shrug, and he seems to be relaxed by your lack of knowledge on this subject.

"Didn't sleep well Card?"

"Having those nightmares about storms again. Did I tell you about the time..." Card spends most of the process telling you stories about times he was in various plasma storms while on freighters. They're all very dull stories with no climax, but you are very intrigued by the notion of plasma storms, and the brief mention of an "ion" storm of some sort. You would like to one day visit one of these natural phenomena. (Learned: rudimentary Storms and Nebulae)

As you're finishing up you see people start to exit their domiciles and wait at the table. Many of them look well rested, but some look tired. Nearly all of them engage in conversation.

Finally, the food is finished, while the chef added his finishing touches you help yourself to some food that he set aside for the both of you, filling your stomach more fully.

The act of infecting people with their food is wholly possible, but taking control of so many people at once will be a challenge in your present state. You feel that you can leave spores in the food of three individuals, and manage to reliably infect two of them. The third will require some high-quality concentration to take without his immune system stopping you.

(Wow. Looks like spore's luck ran out)

Your attempt to infect three people at once seemed feasible, but then it went wrong very quickly. The strain on your mind was simply too much, and you only managed to control one spore effectively enough to actually assume control over a member of the crew. The other two spores struggled and fell silent as the bodies they inhabited absorbed them.

Still, you've acquired a new host!

You infect the mind and body of one Mallory Atkins, one of the cargo technicians on the ship. Her main job includes duties like loading and unloading the cargo, and monitoring the cargo manifest. She doesn't do very much while in transit.

You now control an engineer, a "comatose" atmospherics technician, and a cargo technician.

-- (Engineer)
You finish your set aside meal and Card thanks you for your help before he consumes his own meal and then sets about cleaning the kitchen.

You overhear one of the crew say: "Gee whiz Will, this is one of the best meals we've ever gotten!"

Card boisterously responds to him, saying, "that's William P. Card to you, miiiister Butterfingers!"

The crew laughs, but you're unsure as to why.

You part way with the crew of the ship, after a hearty meal and a good day's work. Evidently your engineer wasn't a very social character, as most people barely engage him beyond a wave.

Your engineer proceeds to engineering, and you pass by the chief and Christina, on their way to get food.

"Already ate?" Christina asks your host. The chief stands by to hear an answer.

"Yes. I am on my way to engineering."

The chief chimes in. "Perfect. We were going to ask you to watch engineering for us anyways. Thanks Richardson." He pats you on the shoulder. Christina give you a thumbs-up.

Your engineer continues on to engineering...

-- (Mallory)
>socialize
Mallory stays behind and socializes with the crew, and she recalls a great many details about them.

There are fifteen members of the crew (you control three). Three in engineering, two in cargo, two in atmospherics, three bridge personnel (including the captain, and the communications officer), one janitor, one hydroponics technician, one doctor and nurse, one chef, and one certified bodyguard.

Around you people chatter about the "loss" of the atmos tech, Daniel Caleb. A woman comments about how, "his family will be shocked when the cap' tells them." Some of them share a collective moment of silence.

"So, Mallory, you excited to finally get to stretch your legs and do some real work?" another member of the crew asks jokingly. You recognize him as Jacoby, the communications officer. They all chuckle, and you join them.

Mallory's mind tells you that the crew often "busts her britches" over the fact that her job is pretty useless while they're traveling. Someone has to operate the cargo machinery though, and track the manifest.

Keep it low key, maybe we'll be heading towards a populated station. Or even a planet.
>>
>>40961702
No, ask how long we have left in this journey, you lost track of the days.

I second the coughing idea. Don't wake him up, but since he was already alive and comatose a cough isn't so incredibly suspicious.

I'm very interested in the certified bodyguard.
-is he the captain's bodyguard? Are we transporting him to guard someone important?

In any event, our future is greater than this ship, and the bodyguard could be a great way to reach someone important.

Thanks for running op!

Complain about the plumbing in your room maybe.

Lure someone in there. And also wait which section is in charge of the running water.

Is it in the archive?

(I'm about to do that now)

(For now I'm planning to run on Wednesdays, and Sundays as an extra day for these early sessions. Unless there's an outcry for me to only do one session a week.)

>>40961785
(Wrapping it up, since it's late and activity is dropping off. I'll tell you right now, the farthest that engineering is going is one foot into engineering!)

>>40961835
>alert us about the doctor
(You'll be able to hear the doctor come in. He's feigning his comatose.)

>bodyguard
Mallory and the other hosts know that he is a security officer. A guy your company sticks on the ship just in case some pirates attack. Of course, if pirates do attack he's not going to do a whole lot of anything. It's just to appease bureaucrats and CEOs.

>turn the comatose person's body into some sort of brain vessel
(Hmm... Fuck it. I'll allow it to be possible, since I gave you a basic understanding of neuroscience, but I won't make it easy quite yet)

>Attempt to morph the comatose patient's body to contain more brain matter. (Difficulty 80, failure is dangerous)

If we can get a consensus to perform this, it'll be a d100.

>Ask about the trip's destination
"I wonder what our destination will be like!" Mallory says during a pause in the small talk.

"Didn't you know? Joker is an arctic piece of shit. Another small fringeworld covered in ice with some titanium on it. Big whoop. Fringeworld Mining Corp loves little rocks like those for some reason."

"Speaking of Joker, I think we're supposed to be coming out of subspace soon," you hear another crewman say. "End of the day right?"

Someone grunts in agreement. "2200. Should take an hour to navigate the asteroids and another hour to dock."

>Any more questions? (write-in)

Night OP and remember, The flood listens through time and stone.

Can't think of any. Brain shut down, could use some sleep, or spores.
Great thread.
>>
>>40961946
Yeah... I'd rather wait until we've solidified our hold on the crew before we try any crazy mutations.
>>
>>40961946
No to the brain shit.

Thanks for the thread senor.

We WILL be building one.
>>
>>40961946

Yeah, pass on the brain shit for now. We already control 1/5 of the crew and we didn't really know what we were doing. I'm confident we can infect the rest without resorting to any crazy mutations (and getting detected or risking a warning being sent out).

Goodnight.

How many people are stuck there in the ass end of nowhere I wonder.

I'll renew the question on Sunday.

It's been a pleasure questing for you all. Hopefully I'll get a bit better at giving you options and making you roll for them in the future.

If anyone has any questions or feedback related to the quest, feel free to ask or share! I'll be submitting this for archiving on http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com as Spore Quest.
