Robin’s mom, the current Pokemon league champion, laughs in your face.

You start ushering your friends and Vernon out. “Come on, we don’t have to deal with this.”

“Oh! Don’t mind me!” She laughs in that condescending, shrill way. It’s like she’s pinching the underside of your arm, except in your ears. “If that’s the way you want to play this little game, then so be it.” She walks over to Robin. “You know, I was going to let you win. Really, I was.”

“W-why?”

“Because you won’t fight your best otherwise. You could fight in the league and lose and go home and tell yourself you did your best. You could convince yourself of that little lie, then just...give up, like everyone else. But to defend the title,” she stares off at nothing in particular, “to defend the title, you’d feel obligated to be better. You’d feel like you had to earn it after the crowds all said hateful, resentful things to you about how you were handed it by your mother. You’d be truly miserable, and in that darkness you’d find the will to fight.” Her eyes fall on you. “To sacrifice.”

“You’re a monster!” Vernon finally loses his composure.

“I’m a winner,” she turns around and starts walking off. “Because I’m willing to do what it takes.”

Everyone sits in silence for a moment.

Vernon finally breaks it. “We should get started on your training. We’ll need to head to my place. It’s...far. Meet me at the edge of town where we fought when you’re ready.”

“You guys want to go shopping?”

“Sure,” Jeanine pats you and Robin on the back. “Let’s go!”

You and your friends head out to the middle of town and start looking around. You spend some time trying on new clothes, looking at trinkets and gadgets and toys for your Pokemon.

You look over at everyone. Vance, with his short cape that somehow just looks natural on him. Robin, with that little choker you got her and the bracelet you started for her. Both of her eyes dart around excitedly. Jeanine leans against a coat rack, trying to look wise and offer her opinion on something. Clair pushes it and causes her to almost trip. She smiles and laughs without realizing it.

Vance and Jeanine will probably be off fighting Team Imperium while you train. You’re pretty concerned about them.

Clair is going to go back to her gym. She’ll probably be lonely.

You and Robin are going who knows where for three months. You have no idea what to expect.

A little kid tugs at your pants. “Can I have your autograph?”

You smile and start signing a small paper she gave you. It’s really hard to feel natural. She smiles and jumps before turning away. You feel doubly awkward since the first thing you did was cover your pockets to make sure she wasn’t swiping anything off you. It’s what you’d have done from that angle.

“Come on!” You start pulling Jeanine and Vance into a photobooth. Robin grabs Clair.

Clair huffs as she sits half on your lap, half on Vance’s. “It’s too cramped!”

The camera flashes just as you react to Clair’s complaint.

Jeanine takes something out of her pocket. “Yeah.” She starts handing out little bracelets to everyone. “But I can’t complain. You guys are comfy.”

You look at yours. It’s a bracelet with a small crystal. Jeanine hands one to everyone. Each crystal is different. Yours is layered. Black and a deep, purple.

The camera flashes just as you look up at her. Small tears well up in your eyes. “H-hey, these are the ones from the ruins.”

“Yup!” Vance smiles. “Jeanine’s been focusing them.”

You look back down at yours, then the others. They have have small slivers missing from the middle. You grab everyone’s and put a small pick in that empty spot. “Just in case you guys get into trouble and I’m not there to bail you out,” you explain.

“You? Bail US out?” Clair looks at you incredulously. “Oh you have got to be kidEEEEEEE-” Clair jumps as Robin tickles her under the rib. She reacts just in time to get her picture taken.

You hug Jeanine first. Her chest squishes into you, almost pushing you back. You hold on tighter. “Thanks, for the bracelets. For everything.”

She laughs. “Don’t say thanks. It’s not a chore to be your friend, you know.”

You hug Vance next. He lifts you up into the air without even trying. You dangle for a second, then pull bag. “Heh, sorry. I guess I don’t know my own strength.”

You punch him in the arm. “No. You don’t know your own brains. You hide it, but you’re a smart guy. Don’t hide it so well that you forget it too.”

You move on to Clair. She rubs on arm while avoiding eye contact. “Make it quick. Don’t get get all gay about it.”

“Clair!” Robin protests. “That’s offens-”

You grab Clair by the face and plant a big one on her. Not something overly lewd, but definitely not a platonic, friendly kiss. You try to subtly watch Vance. He looks surprised, but not upset. He sighs and rolls his eyes.

Clair takes a second to compose herself. “Hey,” she barely whispers, still confused and weak. “Hey!” This time is much louder. “You crazy dyke! I’ll-”

“Offensive!” Robin grabs her this time and gives her tongue. her hand runs up behind Clair’s head, through her hair, just like you usually do to Robin. Clair gives a very soft, faint moan.

“Uhh...” You hear from Vance.

“S-s-s-sorry!” Robin’s sudden burst of courage vanishes. She hides behind you, blushing furiously.

“Come on,” Jeanine grabs Vance. “Let’s give Clair something to feel awkward about as payback.”

"Uhh.." Vance repeats as Jeanine presses into him and walks off.

Clair chases after them. “But that wasn’t me! That was Robin!”

You and Robin follow him. he asks about how many Pokemon you have, what kinds, general information like that.

You stop at the Pokemon center entrance. “Great. Robin, give me one Pokemon. Kat, you’ll need to give me four.”

“Wait, what?”

“This way we can have all of them with us at once.” The short old man pokes you with his cane. “What, you think I’m going to run off with them or somethin’? I just need you to gift them to me while we train.”

Robin looks unsure. Even if it makes sense, giving a Pokemon away for any reason feels wrong. She eventually reaches for a Pokeball from her pocket. Looks like Golems.

You dial up Professor Fir while Robin and Vernon make the trade official using one of the machines.

“Hey Professor!”

“Hello there!” The professor greets you back, just as friendly. “How can I help?”

You and Professor Fir catch up a bit, but you don’t want to spend too much time chatting. “So I need to train some Pokemon out for now.”

“Well,” he says, “you’re certainly keeping busy! Give me a few minutes and I’ll make the switch.”

You swap out Aria, Raistlin, and Vlad for Devon, Trunks, and Fel. You’re just trying to make sure everyone gets time out with you as evenly as possible. You sort of lost track. You hope you haven’t neglected anyone.

“You know,” Professor Fir begins. “That Butterfree of yours produces a lot of powder.”

“Is he alright?” You hope your clubbing didn’t do anything bad. He seemed so solid!

“Fine,” he says. “Just unusual. He won’t be able to move as quickly as most other flying Pokemon though. It’s a genetic oddity that sometimes happens with the runt of a pack.”

Butterfrees have runts? You consider what he told you and thank him for his time.

“Alright,” Vernon puts a hand on your shoulder. “It’s a bit of a trip. Unless you can charter us a helicopter, we’ll have to head out as soon as possible to get the most out of our time.”

You look to Robin. She nods. Her Joltik, who’s resting on her head, nods too.

“Okay. Let’s get moving.”

The three of you hit the road. Vernon isn’t exactly what you’d call fast, but still faster than you’d expect or a man with a cane. It’s the perfect pace for Robin, who’s still recovering from her surgery.

“So, how far is it anyway?”

Vernon grunts. “I wanted to get far away from the public eye. it’s great when it’s look up to you, but ain’t nothing worse than having it look down on you.” He points to the vast, dense jungle. Despite the impassable looking trees, he leads you through discrete small paths without having to stop or backtrack. “There’s a large hill. Or I suppose it’s a short mountain. Anyway, it’s a few days in this direction here. I used to be able to drive there when I had my all terrain.” He sighs, “that thing could really get you around. Raichu used to love riding it.”

You don’t remember Raichu's being particularly tough, but you know there’s more to it than that. At least, you want to believe that. It’s hard to be entirely bought over by that way of thinking when you’ve seen first hand the innate power of a legendary Pokemon.

Vernon and Robin are slowing down a bit. Neither of them wants to show it though.

“We should camp here,” you tell Robin and Vernon. “Good shade, small stream nearby. It’s perfect.”

Vernon stretches his back. “Well, I suppose. But the real training starts in the morning.” He looks at you meaningfully. “Get a good night’s sleep.”

You and Robin set up your tent and feed your Pokemon. it’s getting dark faster than you’d expect.

You want to spend time with Fel, but you don’t see the rush. You’re going to be doing a bunch of training, right?

You look into Robin’s eyes. Both of them. You still can’t believe it.

She looks up at you and smiles. “What?” She brushes the hair behind her ear. Her hair is getting pretty long these days. It works for her.

“You look good.”

She blushes and looks away. Her right eye turns into the shape of a heart. “No, you do...”

You crawl over to her. A wicked smile creeps up your face.

Robin’s face takes on a soft pink hue as you gently push her back. “I know you’re tired. Don’t worry. I’ll take care of you.”

You wake up the next day drenched in sweat. Bleg. The humidity around here is intense. You and Robin get a quick rinse in the nearby stream before coming back to the camp. You see Vernon there, preparing tea. “Oh good. You’re awake. Listen. You and Robin are very different trainers, and like I was saying before, you need different training.” He hands you a cup of tea. “I want Robin and I to go on ahead.”

You look at your tea, then Robin who’s out of earshot. “Why?”

His normally harmless old man face hardens a bit. “Your Pokemon trust you, Kat. They’ll jump without hesitation if you say so. But do you trust them?”

What kind of question is that? “Of course I do.”

“Oh really? You’d let Devin fight a Pokemon without your help? You’d trust his judgement on that?”

You think back to when Devon fought that Arbok, way back when you were getting Vance’s parent’s money from Team Imperium. You didn’t let him have the fair fight, opting to end it quickly. You still think that was the right call though.

You eye him suspiciously, then open the map.

“You just need to drink the tea, let your Pokemon take you there through the jungle, and we’ll begin the real trainin’.”

You look into the hot cup of tea. “Are you going to make Robin do something like this?”

He lifts himself up with his cane. “No. She tries to outsmart all her problems. She needs to learn focus. It’s not a dangerous exercise. Besides. It wouldn’t be fair, what with that eye of hers.”

You blow on the tea, then drink it down. Vernon watches you as you drink it down to the last drop.

“Ha! Ahahahah! You fool! I have you now!"

You grab a Pokeball from your belt, but your arms go numb and you drop it.

“I’m just messing with you. Yeesh. You really do have trust issues.” He picks it back up and attaches it to your belt. “People and Pokemon ain’t so different. Most are good, or at least decent.”

“That wasn’t funny,” you feel your knees losing strength. You don’t dare take a step.

“Well, it was to me, but I’m sorry if I stepped over a line there. Maybe you have your reasons. I’ll get a Pokemon out for you before I head off. Which one do you want to start with?”
