Welcome back to Spore Quest!

You are the spore. After eons of floating amongst the stars you found yourself on a fringeworld corporate freighter called the Golden Galleon.

The spore immediately set upon the ship's engineer, Richardson Bright, and after some shock and awe tactics the spore managed to infect all of the plants in medbay, infect and heal a comatose atmospherics technician named Daniel Caleb, and make breakfast! At the climax of the first episode the spore finally failed at his attempts and only managed to infect Cargo Technician Mallory Atkins, rather than claiming three new hosts.

Through Ms. Atkins, the spore learned that within 24 hours the Golden Galleon would land at a mining outpost on an arctic planet known as Joker. With three of the 15 crewmembers infected in a mere six hours, the spore may very well be able to accomplish his objective!

Will the spore be able to take the Golden Galleon before it lands? Will the humans discover his existence? Will Richardson's naked body forever be burnt into the mind of Old Man Martin?

Find out on SPORE QUEST!

In the last thread we left off with a couple things, so let's start with those before our journey resumes.

Mutate the "comatose" atmospheric technicians body into a brain mass? (Difficulty 85, dangerous, would increase the number of things you can take control of by 5).

Speaking of, we should get a little more aggressive with spreading our spores. We should have everyone under our control before we reach our destination.

We have a very short number of hours before arrival.

There's reason to be in a hurry here.

To be more exact, the current time is 0800. The ship is expected to arrive around 2200 (assuming no faults).

I forgot to mention (I seem to forget a lot of things!) that if you succeed the check (best of 5) it won't be inherently obvious that his body has been tampered with upon inspection.

If you fail it, you'll be hoping that the doctor is blind, or otherwise she'll notice that his body has been mutated in a strange way.

>Mixed feelings
Let's move on for now, and I'll present the option again if a bunch of people decide they want to do it, or if it becomes slightly safer (or easier) for the spore to do it.

Current time: 0800
Docking time: 2200

The spore's engineering host opens the door to engineering, a vast room with pipes, tanks, and computers galore. Every wall seems to have a readout or a gauge. In the back of engineering he can see the first section of the engine, as well as a door marked "Reactor Core."

There are a great many things here, and your host knows a bit about all of it because of his previous gains!

With the other engineers off at breakfast, your current task is to watch the faultboard, over by the main computer station.
>Inspect the room
>Inspect the engineering consoles
>Stare at the faultboard
>Write-in

-- (Comatose)
>Wake up? (Optional)

-- (Mallory)
At this point people have started to leave for their respective duties. The other engineers enter the common room to retrieve theirs, as well as some of the bridge crew.

"Hey Card, the captain is taking the breakfast shift again and wants his meal on the bridge. You got a plate ready for him?" says one of the bridge officers. Mallory isn't very familiar with this person, but she thinks his name is Alexander. He is the ship's navigation officer (pilot).

At this point, Mallory has little to do until they land. She is expected to inspect cargo before the loading and unloading process begins, and to make sure all the lifters are working properly. That task usually only takes about an hour, maybe two.
>Write-in
>>
>>41039263
>>41039554
The doctor will be easy. The patient is under constant but basic observation, correct?
Have him move a little, as if starting to wake up, but not totally and just wait for the doctor to come in to investigate

I've got a question, actually. Do we have full access to all of our host's knowledge instantly, or are those things locked within his personality that we are suppressing?
>>
>>41039798
>"Hey Card, the captain is taking the breakfast shift again and wants his meal on the bridge. You got a plate ready for him?" says one of the bridge officers.
Maybe we can volunteer to bring that plate instead somehow.
>>
>>41039888
We clearly don't. Did you not notice we had to read a book to relearn engineering and had to ask where the hell we were going.
>>

Just sorta twitch a little, just a bit of arm or leg movement to get the attention of whatever is monitoring the host. If we can adjust heart rate or something to get the doc in here.

Offer to take the captain's meal to the bridge for him, since we don't have much to do.
Infect it on the way.
>>

>>
>>41039915
That's why I asked, I figured if the host's mind is still there but suppressed, maybe we could start searching through memories to get more detailed data on things.
>>
Hey Spore, once we get enough vectors could we actually mutate or morph their bodies into specialized organs?
Like spore producers or biological sensors that can detect nearby biomass etc?

>Do we have full access to all of our host's knowledge instantly
Academic things yes. When you take a new host you get a good understanding of what they know.

Because of the way the spore suppresses the personality of its host, it makes it more difficult to access their memories. Making contact helps jog your memory.

>>41039915
You were much stupider at the time, so even though you knew what he knew you didn't understand it. The book allowed you a better understanding of engineering. Keep in mind, your host is a low-rung engineer. The chief would know a lot more than he does.

>>41040001
>could we actually mutate or morph their bodies into specialized organ
You can now already, but you're not very good at it. The more visible the mutation, the easier it is.

>>41040003
Uh, will do.
>>
>>41040057
So the process of taking over the brain messes with the memories and makes them harder to get to. Makes sense.

>making contact
You mean with the host's personality? Would we be able to do that without relinquishing control of the body, even temporarily? We may want to try that at some point.
>>
>>41040149
Making contact with people the host knows or knows of. That's why every time the spore sees something new they recall information about it.

>Inspect the engineering consoles
The Richardson host sits before the primary engineering console and shakes the trackball to wake it up.

From this console you can see the status of everything related to engineering, arranged in easy-to-use tabs! The status of the engine and the reactors, the level of the various tanks, and all kinds of other things that an engineer would need to know.

From here you can also make some adjustments. A lot of the really important stuff requires the chief engineer's passcode to enact, but you know that from here you could cause a lot of damage. Or fix a lot of things if they break.

Your host has spent a lot of time in this room, and sitting at this console.
>Do something with the console (write-in)

"Mallory? What uh... what can I do for you?" He looks a bit nervous as she approaches him.

"I can take the captain his lunch. I've already eaten."

"Sure... yeah. That sounds great. Thanks! I'm starving." Alexander seems extremely grateful for the offer, and allows Mallory to take a plate of food to the bridge.

Mallory proceeds to the bridge.

Richardson leaves the console behind and mills about the room. Inside one of the walls he can see windows and consoles for the coolant and fuel tanks. There are also a number of pipes that he knows lead from engineering, and supply a feed of cold air for any air-cooled systems or parts, each with a temperature and pressure sensor and a cut-off valve.

The section of the engine located in this room is where the engine intakes fuel and coolant. It also has its own consoles for monitoring its status, and controlling the various functions. From here, and with the chief engineer's passcode, someone could control the speed of the ship or even move the ship into subspace for FTL!

The reactor room door leads to the reactor room, unsurprisingly. Richardson opens it for a moment, and sees the reactor control room, with various monitors and a window into a large chamber. It also contains two radiation suits with oxygen tanks, because the reactor room is a dangerous environment.

As Richardson closes the reactor room door, he hears a loud "whoop whoop!" noise behind him.

Before the Mallory host enters the bridge, she inserts some spore cells into the captain's breakfast.

"Captain? I brought your food."

"Hm? Oh, Mallory. If you're trying to butter me up to get me to accept your transfer, you'll have to do a lot more than that." Captain Joseph Buchanon says with a gruff voice. He takes the food from Mallory and sits back at the captain's chair, setting it on a tray next to him.

Richardson stares at the fault board. It displays a tree of lights for various components of the ship. The lights are all green, except for one.

The light labelled "Coolant Outtake - 'B' Junction" has started blinking red. Richardson knows that this indicates the detection of a serious fault related to that system, and he selects the fault on the fault board's computer display.

"'B' Junction Coolant Outtake - Low Pressure Detected - Fault Code 101948"

(Roll 1d100 for either option to guess what the fault means)
>Leave engineering and investigate it yourself
>Let the chief engineer know

-- (Mallory)
Mallory flips the captain the bird as he's sitting down. She attempts to wait for him to take a bite of his food, but the captain looks behind him and tells her to leave.

Unfortunately for him, telling Mallory to buzz off made him hungry, and he finally takes a bite of his meal.

The captain takes some time to control, but all humans are more or less the same. In a few moments Captain Joseph Buchanon joins the ranks of the spore.

Knowledge gained: Piloting (basic), Stellar Phenomena (Advanced).

You feel that he doesn't actually know very many interesting things beyond how to pilot the ship, but he does know more about the phenomena of the universe than you did before.

What will Mallory do?
>Go to the cargo bay

At present the ship is on a course for the planet, as expected. It will arrive in a little over 13 hours.

The bridge is simple. It allows control of the engine and the maneuvering thrusters, as well as communications. The bridge lacks intricate control of various systems of the ship, because it relies on the various departments to fill those gaps. Your captain host feels that it is a cheaply made freighter that can do little more than move things.

With the authority of the captain you have much more flexibility.

Richardson meets the chief and they enter the junction together. The room is unusually hot, and you can see a puddle of blue liquid ahead.

"Shit, this isn't good!" the chief says as he runs down the corridor.

You follow him, and you see that the pipe you had repaired earlier has sprung a leak at the joint of two pipe sections immediately after the sensor you had fixed.

"It wasn't like this before," Richardson says.

"Damnit. The system must've hiccuped again when we dropped from subspace. I keep telling FMC that this freighter needs an overhaul. This time they're not going to have a choice. We'll have to cut off the pipe and run at reduced power until we can get it fixed."

The Chief grabs his radio and tells the other engineer to cut off the flow to this route, and after a moment the leak slows to a stop.

>Fuck yeah hover platforms!
Mallory approaches and mounts the hover platform. She knows that these are a very popular device among members of the crew, even though only cargo technicians are authorized to use them. Occasionally younger members of the crew will sneak in and hold "plat races."

She boots up the hover platform and gives it a joy ride. It's a bit noisy, and the design itself isn't terribly efficient, but it gets the job done.

The platform starts speeding through the corridors between boxes. The feeling of rushing through the air is fascinating to the spore.

Underestimating his speed, the spore's host starts to quickly come up to the end of the corridor. If Mallory doesn't slow down, she'll crash into the door or the wall.

Terry, the monitor, speaks up immediately when he sits. "Sir, there's an alert here?"

"Hm? Yeah. There's a problem with a coolant outtake. They're fixing it now. We're at half speed until then, so we don't overheat the engines."

The colony itself is made from the colony ship, so it's basically a prefab structure.)

>Investigate the cargo consoles
Mallory enters the cargo office and sits at the cargo console.

The console gives access to all the systems in the cargo bay, including the automatic crane system and the door. She can also manually control the cranes from here.

Mallory looks through the manifest. There aren't any interesting things here beyond supplies for the colony. The most interesting item is the large drilling machine, which is split across ten containers. Mallory doesn't know much about mining, but she suspects you could get a lot of ore with something that needs ten containers to hold.

(Clever, Anons)

In order to accomplish this you would need to convince the other bridge officers that there is a credible cause, or fool the ship's sensors into believing there is a credible threat. Tripping the quarantine would lock down the ship, and make it so that only medical personnel can travel throughout the ship.

You think that the easiest way to accomplish this would be by releasing a large quantity of spores into the ship's ventilation. You do have control over botany. However, you would need to have the plants grow and infest their fertilizer and water supply so that they can accomplish this.

There's also an additional caveat: The outpost will be alerted, and you'll eventually have to convince them.

If your ship were automatically entered into quarantine, the outpost would also be alerted. Both your ship and the outpost are run by the same company, and they have all sorts of insurance regulations that they either have to follow, or impose themselves.

The alert would 'only' hit the outpost though. This freighter is made on the cheap, and can't communicate long distances.

>I thought the captain outranked the rest of the bridge.
It's a corporate freighter. He's in charge, but they also don't want him doing really stupid stuff like declaring a biohazard above a major trading hub, causing a massive crisis because he had mold on his sandwich.

Basically they're worried about SS13 players.

>It'd be in his interests not to report quarantine
It would indeed. The company would be happy to not allow the crew to do biohazard quarantines at all, but the sensors can't detect everything.

Let's try to convince the crew. With the medics under our control and the captain, it shouldn't be too hard.

Don't attempt to injure the chief engineer. He could die and I have a feeling we'll really need that level of technical knowledge. Instead, perhaps we can get close to him in another way and infect him secretly? Maybe "accidently" cut him with an infected knife or tool or something.

I hope this clears things up.

(The mining colony has better communications technology, but it can't make long range transmissions either.

That might seem odd, but with the early-FTL tech these guys are running on, they require a subspace transmission buoy to be in the area. Those are expensive, and FMC typically reserves those for more lucrative colonies, or colonies in a dangerous area.

Your captain has been running this route for years, and this is actually a relatively safe area. It's only in the last year that pirates have shown up at all.)

>Attempt to injure the chief engineer and send him to infection bay

As Richardson and the chief reattach the coolant pipe, Richardson's hand "slips" and he "accidentally" makes the chief burn his hand on one of the adjacent pipes.

"Fuck! Fuck!" The chief starts dancing with all the grace and expertise of a man with a serious burn.

"Shit chief, I'm sorry!"

Eventually. There's a reason why I occasionally say that the spore is close to evolving a new ability.

(Presently you can much about with the humans and plants you infest quite a lot. You could transform them into a blade-armed monstrosity if you so choose. Provided you have the energy and nutrients to do so, of course. You could now if you really wanted to.)

>>

>>
>>41045673
Why would they quarantine it?
We're the ones who arrived, we're the only thing that could bring a disease, the mine has done nothing, and I doubt the rest of the people there would agree to them being quarantined.
>>
>>41045686
For some reason he's acting like we can only be on one planet.
>>
>>41045697
Because you obviously do it after the ship's crew come onto the mine and obviously expose everyone to the biohazard, at which point everyone must suffer protocol.
>>
>>41045673
Jesus what do you check after a quarantine is called?
THE ONES WHO COULD HAVE BROUGHT ONE.
As of now unless you want to wait a bit having a quarantine called on the mine right after we got there is asking for trouble and scrutiny to us.
>>
>>41045723
Then why bother with quarantine when we could just act normal and slowly infect everyone without causing a big fuss and scaring everyone?
>>
>>41045753
Because it gives us a chance to do it much easier and faster by handing complete control of the mine to people we already infected.

Scaring people doesn't have a negative impact on ability to infect, since we're isolated.
>>
>>41045472
So can we do any of these two or get thoughts about them?
>>41045450
>>41045496

>>41045686
What base?

On a dead rock with no biomass other than what gets shipped in?

We are an infection, our base are the things we infect

We have to follow the herd man

That means no spooking them about any quarantines and lost contact with mines in the middle of nowhere
>>
>>41045741
>what do you check after a quarantine is called?

Who does the checking? Medical personnel. Which is why you infect them before doing that.
>>
>>41045778
You realise that when a quarantine is called everyone who went near the ship would be isolated, doesn't matter if they're a doctor or not?
>>
>Let's quarantine the mine!
>Let's not!
(The only affect that would have is on how other ships treat the mining colony. If you're broadcasting a quarantine, they're not going to land, and would likely return home to report the issue. At that point, FMC would send a ship to figure out why their titanium mine isn't titanium mining.)

>Infect Christine too
The chief engineer attempts to heal the burn wound on his body, but it proves to be quite... difficult. Healing is progressing, but at an almost human rate.

Despite this the chief engineer presses on and heads down to engineering to infect Christine.

"Hey Chief! I expected you to respond on the radio. What's the deal with the pipe?"

"Oh, the pipe? Richardson is working on it. I burned myself so I had to go back to medbay. Doc recommended I let Richardson handle the rest."

I said brain-base.

We benefit from having lots of brain tissue. You must construct additional pylons. The coma guy is effectively that. We can plop him and produce more raw brain tissue someplace hidden and out of the way.

Someplace no one will notice our pylons.

That makes no sense. Having just the doctor and nurse on this ship doesn't make infecting the others quick unless you cause injuries like we did just now using the non-medical engineering guy.

That's the point. You would have to have had human brains to somehow evolve to be ultra-receptive to this hypothetical super-smell?

If pheromones are a key to unlock a subtle effect in the human brain, it doesn't follow that creating a new "supercharged key" will find a supercharged lock in the target's brain that humans just never used before.

"Expecting any more traffic, Joker?"

"The Platinum Falcon is supposed to do another titanium pickup next week. Drop us some fuel too."

"The Platinum Falcon eh?"

The captain knows the Platinum Falcon as the other freighter that frequents this fringe outpost. Each outpost is usually assigned two freighters to move materials to and from, and each freighter is assigned two locations to make supply runs.

8/16 crewmen
Remaining: Chef, Hydroponics, Navigation Officer, Communications Officer, Bridge Monitor, Security Officer, Atmospherics Technician, Janitor

(Would you believe me if I told you that I made a slight miscount? Apparently janitors don't count as crewmen. There are now 16 crewmen on the ship.)

Engineering: Engine is at 50%, but can be pushed back to 100% at any time.

Medbay: Controlled

Hydroponics: Plants controlled

Cargo Bay: Controlled, 1 hour remaining for job completion.

Bridge: Captain controlled. Currently communicating with the Joker colony.

At this point you guys have taken control of most of the ship, and you have the capacity to take the rest of them in one fell swoop if you actually succeed at your attempts to do so. (I'm going to open up the scale a little bit.)

>Infect his coffee

"Actually, can I get another coffee for the chief engineer? He's in the med bay with a burn, and asked for the usual."

"Hot coffee for a burn wound? Shouldn't a doctor frown upon that kind of thing?" the chef quips with a big grin that shows just how pleased with himself he is.

"Hah, you got me there, Card."

The chef goes to make the chief his coffee, and as he does so the doctor leans across and grabs his coffee, then spits a bunch of spores in it.

You can feel the spores in the coffee shriveling and dying off. Time is of the essence.

The chef finishes brewing the chief's coffee and brings it to the doctor along with a plate for carrying the three coffees. Just as the doctor takes it from him, he reaches down and takes a swig of his own coffee.

You barely feel the spores enter his body as the doctor thanks him and walks out. By the time you've returned to medbay, you feel the chef's mind come under your control.

Lunch looms, and there is work to be done!

-- (Engineering)
With lunch on the way, people will be talking about the ship. If the engineers show up they'll definitely get suspicious. Do you want to fix the ship to prevent any potential suspicion?

With the chef now under your control, you can infect the food with relative ease. In an hour the cooking will begin.

Time passes, and lunch arrives. The chef has made his meal, some spore sandwiches with an option of spore salad or baked spore beans. What a tasty meal!

>Fix the ship
By the time lunch comes around the ship returns to its normal speed and systems are green across the board.

It will now take about 12 hours to reach Joker, including navigating through its asteroid belt and performing re-entry, and by around 0000 hours you'll have reached your destination, should you choose to stay on course.

>Infect the crew
Controlling all those loose spores at once is taxing, but you manage to barely pull it off. Every member of the crew eventually falls under your control. The Golden Galleon is now the spore's to command!

As you take control of the ship's crew, you feel your whole being has gained new power. Your spore cells become more flexible in their capabilities, and you feel you can grow and shape biomass as you see fit, provided you have the ability to control it and the materials required to do so.

(Learned: Small ship construction, Small Spore Drone Creation, Spore-Human Morphing (Expert))

Small Spore Drone Creation: You can now create small, brainless drones that can be as large as a medium-sized dog. They could be used to slink through ventilation shafts or latch on to potential hosts and infect them. You can find a great many uses for things such as these! However, they must be within a certain distance of a functioning brain in order to be controlled. If they stray too far from a brain under your control they will go dormant.

Small Ship Construction: You think that you could make small ships with the knowledge you've gained. Doing so would require materials and fuel, as well as a brain to control biomass of this size. Creating a ship of your own is quite a burden with only a single freighter to call home, but in time you may have the capabilities to build a limitless fleet! For the moment, you also lack a good understanding of how to move a ship into subspace, so these ships would take a very long amount of time for interstellar travel.

The captain host looks through the star charts and sees a small host of nearby locations.

Jacksona - The FMC's primary hub in this area of the fringe, with a large station, fuel refineries, and industry. This place also acts as a small trade and vacation hub for the fringe.

FMC Gas Refinery Beta - A small-sized gas collector and fuel refinery between Jacksona and a distant mining colony. This station is reported as having been destroyed by pirates. The Golden Galleon used to make supply runs to this station before it was destroyed. This station acts as a half-way point between Jacksona and a planet that the Golden Galleon has never charted. One of the crewmen has hear that it's an FMC research outpost on a planet that suffers large ion storms, though the man that told him this was quite drunk.

FMC Gas Refinery Charlie - A half-way station between Joker and Jacksona. The Golden Galleon refuels here on the way to and from Joker.

Joker - A titanium mining colony on a barren, arctic planet. Has 40 residents, and minor defenses. Considered to be a "zero threat" colony due to the general lack of piracy and the safety of the location.

Next time you'll decide where you want to go.

For now, I'll allow you guys to make any decisions about the state of the crew. You can morph their physiology as you please, turning them into giant hulking creatures. You can also just leave them as is.

You can try to make some small drones, but you don't think you'll be able to make very many without compacting some of the crew's minds into a control hub of some sort.

Any suggestions for doing anything in particular? You have 16 crewmen that you can morph or combine as you please.

The atmos incident occurred while the ship was in subspace. When the tech fried the airlock he also caused a surge that temporarily shut down the majority of functions in the airlock, including its internal sensors.

The benefit of more vectors is generally to either step into existing human lives and social structure, or to increase brain matter.

Not as far as anyone on the ship knows, and the database of the ship (which has very little non-technical information in it to begin with) also offers no information about this subject.

You do learn, now that you have control of both atmos techs, that in large quantities the spore would be detected as an unknown organism by the ship's sensors. You've disabled those now.

>How obvious
A good question.

Night vision would be obvious during the night if people could see your eyes. You would also be capable of being blinded.

Superior hearing wouldn't really be obvious, as it's not a massive change. You can hear better than you could, but it's not like super hearing or anything.

Cold resistance affects the outer layer of your spore minions by giving them a hair-like material, and by strengthening their internal systems against cold. It's about as obvious as obvious can be.

Photosynthesis? Depends really. With human skin you can't really absorb a huge amount of energy. Unusual colors like black or green do better.

Nutrient and water absorption? Totally unnoticeable. This is mostly important for plant-based or plant-like spore, which would want to root into the ground and feed on the planet's water and soil. Assuming it has anything of value to begin with, of course.

>>41048118
(If I had remembered the pets, the dog would've started to realize. He would've done a lot of barking, but that's about it. The security officer would've taken notice to that.)

>>41048160
That tech and engineering are mostly for dealing with existing technology, so you're on the right track. There are other applications that will come up in the future.
>>
>>41048061
Do they not have plumbing on ships?

>>41048189
>Plumbing
Plumbing can be considered part of engineering or atmopherics. They both use pipes with air and liquids. Compared to providing coolant to a giant matter/anti-matter reactor, a toilet is a walk in the park.

Atmospherics knowledge mainly teaches you about air chemistry and the systems they use to convert various things into breathable air. The logistics therein are easy.

Any time! (On Wednesday or Sunday at 4 p.m. Pacific Time, anyways.)

I know this episode was a bit faster-paced than the last one, but hopefully you all enjoyed it all the same! Next time things should prove to be a bit more tense. The Golden Galleon was really intended to be more of a tutorial to acquaint everyone with the spore, and how it grows and advances as a being. For the most part it was all stealth and subterfuge, but based on what I saw it's clear that people understand the kind of capabilities it has access to.

Taking over a "family" is easy though. A long-time crew of fringers is child's play for the spore. The galaxy, on the other hand, is an unfriendly place!

Good night everyone!
>>
>>41048184
Could you choose to only strengthen internal systems against the cold, instead of doing both that and giving them fur?
Also, let's find and assimilate some mantis shrimp. We'd be unstoppable if we did.
>>
Go down to colony
Infect the colony
Place all 40 people into those empty crates we had before
Morph them into spore bombs
Unload crates at a crowded planet or station and watch the fireworks

But I guess this all assumed that controlled humans no longer have basic needs like, food, water or sleep.
