You are Siegfried Schmidt, a former guard from the city of Morsland. Due to various circumstances, you have become the new wielder of Galadriel, a holy sword which houses a powerful six-winged angel of the same name. Now you have come to the White Watchtower, a fortress close to the border between the Forsaken Lands and the kingdom of Iseria, to train with the crusaders so that you can protect yourself from the demons that might come after you now that the sword is in your possession.

Today has been pretty eventful. First you went to spar with the city guards in preparation for the tournament, and after nearly breaking a halberd over some poor guard's head, you learned that your powers as a Champion are starting to grow. Soon after, while eating lunch with Justine and Erika, you saw the man in the cloak get into a fight with some large thug. When questioned, he proved to be a bit of an asshole and ran off. Finally, when returning to the palace, you ran into Daniel, just returning from the Lione estate after being invited by Celia Lione.

"Indeed. Quite the interesting woman, very skilled with a blade from what I saw. You may have your work cut out for you Siegfried, I hope you've been using your time wisely."

You look back towards the woman Daniel just parted ways with. She's wearing plate armor, much like her brother. Curiously, you notice that her shield is strapped to her right arm. Could she be left-handed? Before you have time to analyze her more, she turns the corner to the noble district and disappears from sight.

"You said you talked about dueling?" You ask, turning your attention back to Daniel.

"We did, yes. Apparently, she recognized my name when her brother told her about me and wanted to invite me over for tea. We talked about tourneys we'd won, people we'd fought, and she even asked me for advice for the coming tournament."

"You gave her advice?"

"I did, yes. Nothing too big, just small things like the best angle to hold your sword at for a disarm. Her style is different than what mine was though, I'm not sure my advice was of any use to her.”

>”Don't suppose you could give me some advice too then?”
>”Daniel, why are you helping her? I have to fight her in the tourney at some point, remember?”
>”What is her style, exactly?”
>”Well, sounds like you had a good time. Anyways, I should get back to training. Later.”

"What is her style, exactly?" You ask, walking next to Daniel on the way into the palace.

"It's much more aggressive than what I'd have expected. While my style relied more on experience and technique, hers seems to balance technique and raw strength. I feel it's how Erika would fight if she could keep a cool head, no offense."

"What do you mean, I keep a calm head in a fight." Erika defends.

"Not really. Even while we were sparring today, you tend to make reckless moves." Justine points out.

"But in any case, that's what her fighting style is like. I wasn't able to spar with her, but I saw her practice with one of the servants there. From what I saw, I imagine her strategy is to push the offense and force her opponents to stay on the defensive. Her strength definitely seems to help with that. I imagine being left-handed gives her an advantage as well, as it's easy to confuse people who are used to fighting right-handed opponents."

'If she's an aggressive fighter, then that would explain her choice in armor.' Galadriel chips in. 'Often, people tend to wear heavy armor to try and compensate for their focus on aggression. If you could manage to push her back, I imagine her defense isn't as good as her offense.'

So basically, Celia is an offensive fighter who might be weak on the defense. You'll keep that in mind for the tournament, maybe you can learn more by watching her in the tournament.
>>
>>41248422
"Well, if you're already giving people advice, don't suppose you have any advice for me, do you?"

Daniel stops in front of the palace doors and thinks. "Hmm...Well, since you can't use Galadriel in the tournament, I'd suggest practicing techniques for the tournament. Have you ever disarmed an opponent before?"

"Unless you count Andras, no."

Daniel chuckles. "Well, let's give it a shot here. Follow me."

Daniel leads you from the doors to an empty space in the courtyard. He pulls the sword he has hidden in his staff out, and instructs you to draw Galadriel.

"Now, what you want to do is parry, twist, and push in a motion like this, see? I'm going to swing at you, try and copy the motion I just showed you. Ready?"

>I need two rolls of 3d10
>>
Rolled 2, 2, 7 = 11 (3d10)

>>41248441
>>
Rolled 6, 10, 8 = 24 (3d10)

>>41248441
>>
>>41248441
You nod and wait for Daniel to swing. Once he's sure you're ready, he swings his sword in an overhead strike. You try to parry, but his swing had a lot more strength in it than you'd expect from someone his age, and you only succeed in directing his sword away. He follows up with a second swing, this time from the side, and you parry again. This time you're ready, and you catch the blade in Galadriel's crossguard, then make the twisting motion Daniel showed you, yanking the sword out of his grip. It falls to the ground between the two of you with a clatter.

"Sloppy, but you'll get the hang of it." Daniel says, rubbing the hand that held his sword. "Another thing you can do is kick your opponent back when you need to give yourself some breathing room. In less friendly circumstances, you could your opponent's kneecaps and possibly break them if their knees are locked. Finally, if your weapon has a sturdy sheathe, you could also pull that out and throw it or hit them with it to catch them by surprise. I'd give you more advice if I had any, but you already know how to fight, and a tourney fight isn't much different except the goal is to make your opponent yield rather than to strike them down. Just practice the disarm I taught you, and you should be fine."

You thank Daniel for the tips, and he heads back inside with Erika and Justine after sheathing his sword back into his staff. It's early afternoon now, the tournament is tomorrow. What should you do now?

Now that you think of it, you haven't really explored the palace at all yet. You figure you still have some time to kill, so you head inside and start exploring.

The palace is absolutely huge. While it doesn't have as many floors as the towers, each floor is huge, with several winding hallways and countless doors. While exploring, you cross paths with several servants, enough to make a small army, none of which acknowledge your presence besides a courteous nod or a soft spoken “excuse me”. All of them seem to running some errand or another, whether it's cleaning or laundry. Most of the rooms are vacant as well besides the odd servant doing some cleaning. You see a lot of guest rooms, a few storage rooms, and what looks like a few vacant offices, but nothing in particular catches your eye until you reach the top floor.

On the top floor, you find what you can only assume to be the king's bedroom. You assume such because it's guarded by six armored men and there's a fancy red rug leading to the door. The door itself has an intricate carving of a man sitting on a throne, being crowned by what looks like two unarmored angels, each with two wings and the physical build of a child. If it's not the king's bedroom, then it certainly looks like it.

Continuing your exploration of the top floor, you're about to turn a corner when you think you hear someone talking.

“..sure meeting you, Mr. Reinhardt.”

“Oh no your highness, the pleasure's all mine. Good luck with your studies.”

Is that Reinhardt talking? You peek across the corner and see Reinhardt waving goodbye to princess Catherine, who waves back before turning down another corridor. Once she's out of sight, you see Reinhardt try to straighten his hair out. You step out from behind the corner and clear your throat, causing Reinhardt to flinch.

“Shit, Siegfried? Aureus sake man, don't sneak up on me like that.”

“Talking to the princess?” You ask, ignoring his surprise.

“Huh? Oh, right, yeah. Just happened to bump into each other, thought I'd introduce myself is all.”

You sniff the air. “What's that smell? Reinhardt, are you actually wearing perfume?”

“It's not perfume, it's cologne dammit! Uh, I mean, uh, I just figured since we're around all these high profile people that I shouldn't smell like shit, you know?”

“So you just happened to bump into the princess, after you just happened to put on cologne?”

“Yeah, it was just a coincidence. Nothing else to it.”

>”If you say so, just don't get yourself in trouble.”
>”Reinhardt, you're gonna get yourself and the rest of us in trouble if you're not careful. You know that right?”

He reaches up and pulls your arm off him. "I did not shut down last night, you've got it all wrong."

"What do I have wrong?"

"Uh, well, I, er-"

You chuckle. "You know, you're the last person I'd expect to get tongue tied about a girl. Usually you were the one complaining that some girl from the bar you slept with wasn't as pretty as you thought once the booze wore off. Are you going soft or something?"

He punches you in the arm. "Man, this isn't the same as then."

"So you admit you actually do like Catherine then?"

"...Alright, fine, yeah, you caught me."

"I already caught you like five minutes ago, don't need a confession when you're doing such a piss poor job hiding it. Anyways, good luck with that, just don't get yourself in trouble."

"I won't, I won't. Just don't go telling anyone about that business with the tavern wenches, alright?"

"My lips are sealed." You tell him, before you both part ways.

'Is it wise to let this go? Catherine is a princess, the heir apparent at that. I doubt the king would be pleased if he found out Reinhardt was trying to seduce his granddaughter.'

'It's not like that, Reinhardt's smart enough not to do something that would get him and the rest of us in trouble.'

'If you're sure, but I still advise caution.'

Your exploration of the palace has taken a few hours, and you're sure there's still more you haven't seen yet. Dinner will be in about two hours, what should you do now?

The best part of the GOOD Disgaea games is the story/comedy. The second best part is gaming the system that expects you to game it. Someone who knows what they're doing can take a literal hundreth of the time a newbie does to gain the same amount of power.

Personally, I underlevelled everything to keep the tension on. There's nothing like beating a boss with no character greater than half the boss' level and an average of 1/4.

You decide to continue exploring the palace. Might as well finish what you started, after all.

Continuing your tour of the top floor, you find that this floor is a lot fancier than the others. The paintings have flashier borders, the furniture looks more expensive, and of course, there are more guards patrolling here.

At some point while exploring the top floor, you see Daniel and King Alain standing in front of a portrait at the end of the corridor. You start to approach so you can say hello, when you notice the king has a hand on Daniel's shoulder, while Daniel's head is hanging.

"When did it happen?"

"Last year. I would have sent you a letter, but I had no idea where you'd run off to after you left."

"I see. I suppose that's my fault for not telling anyone where I went."

It's at this point that the two notice you, standing in place halfway down the corridor, not sure if you should leave them be or see what's wrong. Daniel clears his throat, sniffs, and turns to face the king.

"Thank you for telling me Alain, I appreciate it."

"Will you be alright?"

"Yes, I'm fine. Nothing to worry about."

"I can have the servants fetch some wine if you'd like."

"No need, I just need time to think. I'm going for a walk, I'll be back in time for dinner."

Daniel starts walking down the corridor towards you, and greets you with a somewhat forced smile. "Good afternoon Siegfried, hope you've been practicing for the tournament tomorrow."

"Is something wrong Daniel?"

"Oh no, nothing's wrong. I'm just a little out of it is all, no need to worry."

You start to ask him what happened, but he's already left before you can get a word out. King Alain walks up beside you, and shakes his head.

"Perhaps I should have waited to tell him until later." He mumbles to himself.

>"Waited to tell him what?"

"Is Daniel alright? What happened?"

The king sighs. "It's a long story, one which I'm not sure I should be the one to tell. All I can say is, someone Daniel cared about very much died during the winter of last year. I would have told him before, but I didn't know where Daniel went after he left Galloway. Maybe I should have waited to tell him."

"I don't know sir, if you didn't tell him now then you might not have had the chance to until after the Crusade."

"Perhaps you're right. Still, I wish I'd had better news for him after being gone so many years ago."

"Should I go check on him?"

"No, don't do that. I think right now he just needs time to himself. He should be fine after he's had time to think." The king clears his throat. "In any case, you need not concern yourself over such depressing matters. You can speak with him some other time if you really want to know, but I think it's best to give him some space for now."

You shrug, and the king excuses himself. Once he's out of sight, you check the portrait to see if there's any hints there. The portrait depicts a woman, probably in her early to mid twenties, with long brown hair, wearing a fancy dress and smiling, sitting next to a fireplace. There's no nameplate to tell you who it is, but someone here would probably know if you asked.
>>
>>41252282
----------
The rest of your tour is fairly uneventful. Eventually, you make your way to the dining hall, where you sit next to Reinhardt and an empty seat. You're soon joined by Geoffrey, who takes the seat between you and the king, and later by Daniel, who seems alright now.

"You're late Daniel, where were you?" Erika asks.

"Sorry, sorry. I just went for a walk is all. I'd say I hope I didn't make you wait, but from the looks of it you didn't bother." He smiles and points to Erika's plate, already half empty.

"Did you enjoy your walk?" The king asks.

"Absolutely, just went for a nice stroll through town. Wonderful city, almost forgot how busy it can be though."

You feel a gust of wind and open your eyes to find yourself sitting atop the clouds once again. The half moon is shining above along with the stars, and in front of you is Galadriel's mountain peak. Galadriel stands at the top as usual, fully armored and looking down towards you.

"Welcome back, Siegfried. What brings you here this time?"

"I was actually thinking I'd come here and train for the tournament tomorrow. Would it be possible to practice against a memory of an old Champion?"

Galadriel thinks. "I have not tried it before, but I don't see any reason I shouldn't be able to do that. Was there someone in particular you had in mind?"

"Would it be possible to practice against Asher?"

Galadriel thinks for a moment. "It is possible, yes. However, it's been a long time, the memory might not be quite as strong as he really was."

"I'm sure I can still learn a lot from him. That is, if you're okay with it."

"I do not mind. I'm sure Asher would have approved."

Suddenly, the scene around you begins to change, just slightly. Unlike all the other times you've fought one of Galadriel's memories, the only change to the landscape is that the time changes from night to day, and Galadriel's mountain disappears. You are still standing on top of a cloudy landscape, but now you see someone new standing in front of you. A human man, with short blonde hair and blue eyes. His skin is slightly tanned, like someone who made their living in the fields. He is holding a sword identical to yours, and his armor appears to be some strange form of reinforced leather, with iron plates covering vital areas like his chest and legs, while the rest is covered by hardened leather. He wears no helmet, and has a confident smile on his face.

“Asher?” You ask, to which the man does not respond. Right, he's just a memory. He can't say anything, or if he can then it'd just be a memory of something he said before his death. You draw Galadriel, and get into a stance. He does the same.

Your first instinct is to roll out of the way, but he's too fast. In fact, you'd say he's faster than a normal person should be without the help of a spell. Is his gear enchanted?

You don't have time to ponder this, as Asher leaps into the air before reaching you and smashes his hammer into you before you can roll away.

>25/40 HP

Okay, fuck, that probably broke a rib. Asher starts to wind up for another attack, but you manage to fire off a Flash spell before he can bring it down, blinding him. Shifting Galadriel into a halberd, you swipe at his feet and knock him to the ground, cutting up the back of his legs a bit in the process.

You're standing now, and Asher is on the ground. However, that last hammer smash really hurt, almost as much as when you were punched by Alastor in another training battle. You'd really prefer not to get hit like that a second time.

You shift Galadriel into a warhammer and swing down as hard as you can. To your surprise, Asher lets go of his weapon and grabs your hammer, actually stopping it a few inches from his head. Thinking quickly, you try to kick his weapon away while it's unattended, but when you try to kick it, you notice it actually moves just out of the way, seemingly on it's own. Right, that's still Galadriel he's using, or at least a memory of her, so she should be able to move of her own volition, though she can't attack on her own.

Asher reaches for his weapon and tries to strike you, but you cast Blink and teleport back, giving you time to regroup. Now you utter the incantation for Duplicate, and an illusionary double forms next to you. You shift Galadriel into a spear and summon back your shield, and the double does the same. You charge forward, letting out a loud battle cry as you do, and manage to stab Asher just below his left shoulder. That seemed to hurt him, but you doubt that will be the end of it.

Asher gets up and shifts his hammer into a greatsword. He closes in, and you dodge to the right of his swing then bash him in the face with your shield. While he's stunned, you and your double teleport, your double goes behind him, and you go above him, shifting your spear into a greataxe.

Asher turns to deal with the double, slicing it in half with his greatsword. The double dissipates when struck, but it give you all the time you need to strike. Using gravity and your increased strength, you slash down with the greataxe, severing his right arm from his body.

Asher blinks away, holding onto the stub where his arm was. Just as you're starting to think you may win this battle yet, his body begins to glow. Six wings of light form on his back, and you see the light spread from his copy of Galadriel to the rest of his body, just as it does when you use Righteous Strength. However, something is different. Even after the rest of the light dims, you see that his body is still shining where you severed his arm. It takes you a second to realize that his arm has stopped bleed, and a moment later you notice that his arm is starting to regenerate very slowly.

Despite losing an arm, he can still hold his greatsword. You see he's also starting to mutter an incantation.

Well, if he's gonna start using his powers, you should probably start using them too. You don't think they'd let you use your powers in the tournament, but if Asher is going to start going all out, you should too. So, you activate your wings and Righteous Strength as well, then quickly mutter the incantation for Flash.

This time Asher is ready, however, and covers his eyes in time to avoid being blinded. So, you take to the skies and shift Galadriel into a bow, then start raining arrows down on him. He dodges a few, but in the end he gets caught in the torrent of arrows, interrupting his spellcasting.

With several arrows of light sticking from his shoulders, arms, and legs, he shifts his greatsword into a spear. As he does, you see the wings on his back start to adjust, becoming more defined until you can see actual feathers. With a flap of his wings, he takes flight, and several of those feathers start to pluck themselves from his wings and fly towards you like a barrage of arrows.

Seems there's still a lot you haven't seen of Galadriel's powers.

You fly towards the feathers, muttering the incantation for Blink, and teleport past his feathers. Shifting your bow into a halberd, you fly towards him and impale him through the chest with your halberd.

You would think that would be the end of it, but Asher continues to surprise you by grabbing onto your halberd with his one remaining arm and pulls it out. He holds on to it, shifting his weapon into a greataxe and brings it back, intending to strike you while he has a grip on your weapon. You see feathers begin to materialize on his wings again as well.

One more good hit should end this, but you imagine if you're hit by this next assault it's going to hurt. A lot.

You remember the knife you bought back in Morsland, stashed away in your backpack. Quickly, you cast blink to teleport next to Asher and pretend to cast Flash. With your halberd under his remaining arm and a greatsword held in his hand, he has no free arm to block the flash, so he closes his eyes. You use this chance to quickly pull your knife out of your bag, sending a lot of it's contents flying in the process, and stab the knife into his arm. This causes him to release your halberd, which you retrieve, shift into a greatsword, and slash at his exposed neck.

His head separates from his neck, and instantly he disappears. In fact, you notice now that you're not in the air anymore. Rather, you're sitting in front of Galadriel's mountain peak again, all your bags contents still tucked away, and all your wounds gone.

"Perhaps not the best practice for a tournament duel, but practice is practice." Galadfriel admits.

"You said that memory wasn't as strong as the real Asher, right? I'd hate to have fought the real thing then, I could've sworn he broke one of my ribs at some point."

"Regardless, it was still quite an accomplishment. You've done well, Siegfried. I believe that-"

Your conversation is interrupted by what sounds like knocking, echoing across Galadriel's cloudscape.

"What's that?"

"It's from the real world. I believe someone is knocking on your door. You should answer them."

You close your eyes and focus, ending the meditation session. When you open your eyes again, you find yourself sitting on top of your bed in the king's palace again. There's another knock at the door, prompting you to get up and answer it.

"What do you need this time?"

The belt Aleria's wearing changes to look like the scaly belt you found in the archives back at the Red Watchtower.

'Aleria has informed me that you will be fighting in a tournament tomorrow, where House Lione will be watching you closely.' You hear Leviathan say within your mind.

"That's not exactly a secret. Why do you care?"

'You need to impress them if you're to earn Galloway's support in the Crusade. However, Aleria tells me that the youngest child of the Lione family will be competing as well, and that she is undefeated.'

"Yes, and?"

'Perhaps you should bring me with you to the tournament then.'

"Are you nuts? I told you, we can't afford to let them know about you until we speak to the watchtower captains."

'Have you forgotten that I can disguise myself? None of them will know, and it will help even the odds between you and Celia. From what we've gathered, both her and her brother are stronger than the average man thanks to a certain six-winged pigeon's taint.'

'Better a pigeon than an overgrown lizard.' Galadriel spits back.

"You have to admit, you're at a disadvantage here." Aleria chips in. "Celia is stronger than you, and more experienced than you. This little test of theirs is tipped in their favor, there's nothing wrong in evening the odds."

'They're still ahead of you in terms of experience.'

"I've fought bigger things than them, I'll be fine."

'If that's what you think, then fine. You do what you do, and if that fails then we'll be here to put everything back together.'

"It won't come to that. Now get out of here, before anyone starts getting ideas."

The belt Aleria's wearing changes to look like a normal leather belt again, and she shows herself out. You sigh, and start getting ready for bed.

'I'm glad you turned them down.' Galadriel admits.

'They're just trying to help, but lying and cheating are bad ways to make allies.'

'I'm not sure demons would see what's wrong with lying to one's allies.'

'They'll learn in time. Hopefully. Anyways, I gotta get some sleep. The tournament starts tomorrow, I need to be rested and ready in the morning.'
