When you close your eyes and immediately find yourself back in Koenma's office, you know the answer to whether or not you'll be able to get some restful sleep tonight. And that answer is, of course, no.

Your boss is practically shaking with anger, but doing his best to hide it. He keeps his expression mostly neutral, which doesn't help much considering his face is red and the veins are throbbing in his head. Kaya warned you this was coming, and you pretty much knew before she even said anything. Still, you aren't really sure what exactly to expect with Koenma this angry.

"Take a seat," he spits, gesturing to the chairs in front of his desk.

You sit down in front of Koenma, watching his eyes follow you every inch of the way. It's kind of disturbing how intensely he's staring at you, and you feel as though, if looks could kill, you would have burst into flames by now. Then again, it's only been a few seconds, still plenty of time for divine wrath.

"Now, explain to me why you went and trained with Kasai after I specifically instructed you not to," Koenma says in a calm voice that carries the undertones of rage. "After I warned you that you'd be fired if you did so. And, why did you do so mere minutes after I gave you such instructions?"

>>
>>41333572

Don't forget that our protag has almost died on both situations. He only got lucky on the most recent mission because there weren't any other demons lurking about after he was forced to use the amplified Spirit Gun, and the fact that other guy in the first mission had a demonic trident handy that drained energy from its victims.
>>
>>41333572
"Well, considering the fact that I have to deal with creatures that can easily kill a normal person in seconds, and the fact that there isn't anyone close by that could actually train me, I needed some way to get stronger so I can survive and do my job," you tell Koenma. "Kasai training me is a good thing, and I really don't agree with your opinion of her."

"What you agree with doesn't matter," Koenma replies. "When your boss gives you instructions, you follow them. They are not suggestions, they are orders, and in case you've forgotten, you work for me!"

Koenma leans back, sighing. "At least, you did. I think it goes without saying that you're fired, but in case this is like last time and you aren't listening, let me make it as clear as day."

Koenma hops onto his desk and stomps over, looking down at you, barely.

"You are no longer Spirit Detective!" he tells you loudly. "Kaya will no longer be working with you. You are no longer authorized to get involved in cases, and, of course, you're no longer getting paid. Any questions?"

"Assuming your attitude and methodology are the norm here, it's no wonder you have so many enemies," you tell Koenma, rising to your feet. "Or that you go through so many detectives."

You turn and leave, feeling Koenma's eyes boring holes into your back as you do. As soon as you step out of the office, you find yourself not back in your bed, but in a dark corridor, dimly lit by torches lining the walls. Looking behind you, you find only a wall, leaving you with only one direction in which to go, forward.

You walk down the corridor, soon coming to a wooden door at the end. It's shut, but you get the feeling that it's unlocked.

Damnit, i noticed this too late. I remembered a good argument from last thread we should have brought up - that training under the demon kept her under our eye instead of staying in hiding, so we could keep a close eye on her activities and neutralize her if need be.

You reach out and knock on the door, instinctively taking a step back as it swings open on its own.

You take a step forward and peak through the doorway, looking around at the room beyond it. Like the corridor, it's mostly dark, lit only by torches lining the walls. You can see what appears to be a throne on the far side, beside which sits a table containing fresh grapes. A few chairs are scattered through the room, and an unlit chandelier hangs over its center. It seems empty, but you get the feeling that somebody is in there.

"Not a Detective anymore," you tell the voice as you step into the room. "I got fired. So, we don't need to be formal, call me by name."

"As you wish," the voice replies, seeming to be coming from in front of you now.

"By the way, can I have your name?" you ask, looking around the room for whomever is speaking.

"Yes, I suppose if we aren't going to be formal, I will give you my name," the voice answers. "My name is Koe."

A whooshing sound draws your eyes to the throne, which is now occupied.

The creature sitting upon it is clearly not human, though he has a humanoid appearance. He wears a black suit, and matching shoes, reclining in his throne and putting one leg over the other knee. His head is his most striking feature. It looks like a goat skull, and even has curled ram horns stretching from it. Clawed hands fold in his lap as he looks down at you, a smile on his face.

"It's nice to finally meet you in person, my friend," he tells you in a surprisingly pleasant tone. "Though, I wish it were during a happier time for you. I'm sorry to hear that you lost your job, and for my part in that."

"Not entirely, perhaps, but had I not steered you towards Kasai, you may not have been fired," Koe replies regretfully. "It was not my intention for that to happen, I wished only to help, in truth. But, what's done is done, and I have brought you here for a reason."

Koe gestures to one of the nearby chairs. "If you like, have a seat, and we can discuss things. Of course, if your being fired has soured your opinion of all of this too much, you are free to go. If you leave the room now, you will find another door at the end of the corridor. You need only to step through it, and you will wake up in your bed."

Koe leans back, watching you with great interest as he waits to see what you will do. Whatever he wants to talk about, it's obviously important to him, and it makes you wonder why he's talking to a human he doesn't even know about it.

You decide to take a seat and hear Koe out. So, you walk over to one of the nearby chairs and sit down, looking up at the creature sitting on the throne.

Koe smiles, seeming relieved. "Thank you."

"So, can I have some grapes?" you ask, earning a chuckle from Koe.

"Of course," he says, waving his hand.

The bowl of grapes lifts off of the table, hovering over to you. You reach in and grab a handful, at which time the bowl returns to its spot on the table. You eat one, and find it to be absolutely delicious.

"First off, where are we, and what exactly are you?" you ask before popping another grape into your mouth.

"This is my home," Koe answers, eating a grape himself and sitting up a bit. "I brought your Spirit here in your dreams. Humans become far more attuned to the Spiritual aspects of the universe while sleeping. Koenma did the same thing to bring you to your meetings with him. And I suspect you've already guessed this, but I am a demon. As a matter of fact, I'm among the oldest living demons."

He gives you a smile. "But believe me when I tell you that I harbor no ill will towards humanity, or even Spirit World, despite my admittedly low opinion of King Enma. I rarely interact with your kind, but recent events have led me to believe that it was necessary, and, with you being a Spirit Detective, I believe you to be among the more reliable of your kind."

Koe leans forward, his expression serious. "Humanity is in grave danger. The Cultivated Humans being created on the farm you visited are but a drop of water in the ocean of darkness coming to consume your world. I told you who they were being sent to, hoping Spirit World would take action, and that, with their resources backing you, you could deal a major blow to the enemy, and hopefully start on the path to ending this threat."

"So what's this threat you keep talking about?" you ask Koe.

"I think it's a bit early for you to know everything," Koe replies gently. "You'll learn in time, but for now, I can't tell you everything. You'll have to trust me the same way I trust you; one step at a time. You may no longer work for Spirit World, but as a former Detective, you possess Spiritual Awareness and the skills to utilize that awareness. Between that and the competence you displayed dealing with Arthur, I believe that, with my help, you may be able to stop what's coming."

Koe rises from his throne, slowly walking towards you. "This threat comes from both of our worlds, and I fear that, once your world falls, the Demon World will follow. We both stand to lose everything if this isn't stopped."

He stops in front of you. "What I'm suggesting is a partnership. I can provide you with information, direct you towards potential allies, as I did with Kasai, and help you do what you were meant to do."

You're hungry, and, after all that's happened, a nice relaxing breakfast sounds pretty good. You're not sure what's going to be happening from now on, but things are changing again, and you wonder if it's for the better.

You get dressed and head out into the kitchen, sitting down for some pancakes your dad's prepared. He pours you a drink, looking at you in concern.

"You don't look so good," he comments. "Are you feeling alright?"

>A. You're fine

>B. You're feeling kind of sick

>C. You didn't sleep much

"Hey dad have you ever been fired?"

"Slept wrong, had a few bad dreams. Nothing big."

>D. "Had a dream where I made a deal with the devil to save the world. Wonder what Freud has to say about that."

Dig in to our food.

"Also, do we have any grapes? I have a hankering for some."

Same guy who were buthurt Koemna told us not to make a deal with a random insane demon which killed tons of humans

Wait before I back this

Soma did daddy dearest know about our job? and by that I mean the fake one

If the answer is yes then I'll back this
>>
>>41337772
>Soma
I hate having big ass fingers and typing on a phone

Should be Som obviously
>>
>>41337704
"I didn't sleep much," you answer honestly.

"Well, then why don't you take it easy today?" your dad suggests as he sits down. "School's over, get some rest while you can."

With all that might be coming, maybe some rest is what you need.

>To be continued

That's it for tonight. Next update should be sometimes this week.

so what did the little baby think of our parting shot?
>>
>>41338021
Will we encounter any of those people mentioned with awakened spiritual ability? Also will this be renamed since we're no longer a spirit detective, and will we meet Koenma's new lapdog?
>>
>>41338021
Will we get a change of clothes now that we are in partnership with an ancient demon?
>>
>>41338046
He did not appreciate it.

>>41338059
Possibly, and probably.

>>41338077
I'm sure you could ask him for some.
>>
>>41338021
You ought to address things specifically posed to you during the threads, som. Preferrably before the end of the threado.
>>
>>41338096
So did Koenma even have someone in mind or is to mad to admit he screwed up as well.
>>
>>41338077
Yes. Black and red with far too many skulls.
Don't worry, you're still the good guy.
Totally.
Absolutely.
Definitely.

>>41338059
>>41338096
Probably just slap an "Ex-" on the front of the title, maybe add a new tag, and nothing else.
>>
>>41338021
Can we focus on Bruce in the next part
>>
>>41338147
Pair that with our fire powers and we're halfway to being fucking Ghost Rider
>>
>>41338096
Did our dad know about our job?
>>
>>41338177
I am 100% okay with this.
>>
>>41338059
We're still technically a spirit detective, in the sense that we're an individual with spirit power investigating matters related to the spirit world. Just got a different boss.
>>
>>41338129
He'll find someone.

>>41338103
Such as?

>>41338147
Maybe.

>>41338148
If you so choose.

>>41338177
That's a bad thing?

>>41338208
Yes
>>
>>41338301
>That's a bad thing?
Not even remotely
>>
>>41338334
Excellent.

I answered whether your dad knew about the job, and when the question was posed, I was writing the final update. As for the other one, the fact that the voice gave you the chills and seemed to come from nowhere should have clued you in.
>>
>>41338400
It was clued, but explicitness is best.
>>
>>41338400

So is our protag going to go deep into the dark side, or is this one of those slow burn long game things where he might not even do anything really explicitly evil in his lifetime, but it'll help lay down the groundwork for something big later?

Or is the protag working for more like a sanctioned evil where it's the less "hugs-and-feels" and "get shit done at any costs" side of the natural order of things?
>>
>>41338826
That would be telling. You'll find out in time.
