"I was just telling dear Pons of my betrothal to Raymond of Poitiers," she said, and her body seemed seized for a second by a shiver, a thrill of excitement, "At last it will bring to an end the quarreling of that old lecher Domfront. My Raymond is brother to the Duke of Aquitaine, a powerful man not to be trifled with." Domfront, the Patriarch of Antioch. You had heard the two had been engaged in a power struggle. You note Count Pons is not so enthused as the princess.

"What troubles you my lord?" you asked.

Pons looked aside, stirring the wine in his cup. "I only wonder if this is but another stratagem of Domfront's. I know not this Raymond, only that he has kept to English courts. His character is unknown to me."

Alice sighed, her dimpled smile much like her sisters'. "Oh you fuss and worry, but the man is of good birth. It will secure our realm against the vultures that circle it and hopefully provide a son that can rule without interference. It is a good match." She placed a hand upon the arm of the old count. "And for the first time in years I have hope. Is that not worth it?"

When first you had met her she seemed a frantic ball of stress, frayed at the edges. More relaxed, with a little wine and hope, had made her more lovely and imbued with the grace that came more naturally to her sisters.

Pons' reply was to drink his wine, his mouth an unhappy thin line.

Grave words from one that had crossed blades with him. Pons was no unseasoned virgin prone to grand statements. You recalled Malik, who had served Zengi, had spoken of the man in similar terms. Something to keep in mind.

"What say you to other matters," you said, "Say, the Caliphate, and Ascalon."

That had Pons smiling. "Gerard and I spoke on that," he said, "Forgive me for saying that I must secure my own borders, but my son is hot blooded and keen for glory. Perhaps he can join you with a small body of troops."

You caught from the corner of your eye Hodierna slip through the doorway, smoothing her dress against her thighs. You suppressed a grin.

"Raymond chafes to be a man of his own," Pons said, "Perhaps this incursion of yours can help satisfy that appetite of his, and season the boy a little more."

"How many troops exactly?" you asked, cutting to the quick.

Pons drank. "Perhaps one hundred, with a few picked companions."

It was no great host but still a respectable sum.

"Surely Princess, it should be known I only take what is willingly offered," you replied.

Her cheeks flushed a little at that, and she stood a little taller.

"Well, let none say I am not ungenerous," she said, "If you might excuse me." She walked away, a quick stride in her steps.

Pons watched her leave with a dry expression. "The girl plays at a man and suffers for it," he said, "If she played more the woman, it would earn her more respect."

On that you had no opinion. Alice was not as well known to you as her sisters.

You turned your attention back to the assembled court.
