A civilian life flight chopper waits for you at the airport, the helo medic waiting to get Anya on a stretcher and on what medicine he can stick her for- in this case, mostly just fluids to try and restore what she's been sweating out. It thuds off the pad almost like the pilots are military trained- they might be, but you doubt it, unless they've been out a while. The war in Europe cos the Army a lot of it's chopper drivers, and they'd recalled a lot of guys who'd been out for years to help cover the losses.

These two shoot over the afternoon cityscape with a vengeance, and you rapidly revise your opinion- the pilot handles this thing like an attack chopper on a run, nose down and pushing it's VNE. He flares just before the wheels kiss the pavement on the hospital's chopper pad, causing the waiting medics on the pad to shield their faces from flying debris with their hands. They take Anya almost immediately, transferring her from the smaller airborne stretcher to a hospital gurney and hanging her one IV bag while the chopper's crew disembark.

You follow the gurney downstairs and through the building, Rachel and the girls keeping up quite easily- despite the time of day, the place seems almost empty except for you.

They wheel Anya straight through a pair of doors- Dr. Reed intercepts you outside of them.

"That's the O.R, Mr. Bishop." She says. "It's sterile, at the moment. Ritsu is in there already."

You pull up short and nod. "How bad is she?" You ask.

Dr. Reed shrugs and shakes her head. "I have no idea yet. I'll be able to tell you more after we get her stabilized and get that implant out of her." She says.

"How long?" You ask as Rachel and the girls join you.

"Again, I have no idea. It depends on the extent of the infection and any complications that could arise. At least four to six hours to get the implant out, possibly longer. Normally we'd wait until we'd had a chance to get the infection under control, but given the soviet implant's nature, we don't think that's an option." She says disctractedly, looking over her shoulder at the set of doors. "We'll keep her monitored, and we've got the university's heal witch with us, so we should be able to handle anything."

"So, four to six hours?" Rachel asks.

Dr. Reed nods. "At least. Possibly more. At this point, I'd suggest checking into a hotel and getting us your contact information as soon as you do." She says. "We don't really have overnight accommodations here, and even if we did, we'll want to keep her a few days at the very least for monitoring regardless. You're more than welcome to wait, of course, we'll give you a private room, but, again, I've no idea how long this could be, you may have trouble getting a hotel if it gets too late."

"You weren't aboard the Saratoga?" Her dad asks. "We drove down here to see her come back into port, but we thought it was kind of weird you didn't tell us..."

Slider shakes her head. "Let's not have this conversation here. We haven't eaten in a while, let's go get some food. I know a place down in town."

"Santas?" You ask, and she nods.

"Yeah, Santa's."

Securing transport turns out to be more difficult than you'd imagined- Slider's family had rented a four door sedan, which didn't have anything like the room required for all of you, and you hadn't been able to get a rental vehicle of any sort, having just arrived. In the end, you have to get a taxi from the hospital to Santa's, and you're not entirely sure how you're going to get back to the hospital, let alone to a hotel.

Speaking of braincases...

Santa's is busy- almost as packed as you've ever seen it. It mostly seems to be families, nobody you immediately recognize. The news is on all the TVs, covering the cease fire negotiations, which seems to be pretty straightforward right now- both sides pull back twenty miles from the impact points of the bombs and the old border, and agree to not fly anything over the 'front'. The hard line soviet government, of course, is having no part of it, the cease fire being negotiated with "General" Putin's faction.

You're greeted by Santa out front. "Fronk!" He exclaims, wrapping you in a bone-crushing bearhug before you can respond. "How are you, 'mboy?"

"Be a bit better if I could breathe." You wheeze. He laughs as he sets you down, smiling at Stasya and Lilya.

"Hullo girls!" He greets them. "How was the cake?"

They look at each other, and Lilya responds, her voice barely audible over the crowd. "It was good."

Still, Santa hears it well enough. "Good! I'll have another for you in the kitchen! Here, let's get you seated."

He leads the group of you to a quiet part of the deck outside, one that's kind of sectioned off from the rest. "Here, this ought to work! I'll send someone up for your orders in a second."

You all sit for a second in awkward silence before Slider's mom speaks up. "So are you two- you know?" She asks. "Uh, seeing each other?"

"Mom!" Slider protests, blushing all over again.

"As much as I might want to, I should probably help explain." You say, putting on hand on Slider's back and rubbing. "And I don't think Rachel plans to turn loose of me that quickly."

He nods. "I can see that, yeah. Ok, good point. So, Rachel, care to explain."

"Not really." She mumbles.

Her brother laughs at that, reminding everyone of his presence. "We'll talk about this later, young lady." Her mother says, her voice promising that it won't be an enjoyable talk.

Santa shows up a second later to take everyone's order- you order light, still worried about Anya, and, judging by their own orders, Stasya and Lilya are worried for their sister as well, their meals fairly small. Slider almost forgets to order, but lets go and straightens up long enough to do so, though, she too orders light, a simple burger and fries.

"So you said one of your daughters is sick?" Slider's mom asks, after a minute or two of silence.

You nod. "Infection from-" You pause, not really sure how to describe it. "Old surgery issue." You settle on.

"Oh dear. Will she be alright?"

You nod. "She should be, she's getting the best care possible. We'll be in town for a little while, they plan to hold her over for observation and inpatient care."

"But you're not home for good?" Slider's dad asks. You shrug.

"We might be, but there's no telling. If the cease fire holds, maybe."

"Well, if you are, we'll have to meet your family. And this Katya and her family." Slider's mom says. "and we'll all have to sit down and talk about this... arrangement. of yours."

"Nothing to talk about, mom." Slider responds, kind of quietly. "Can we not have a lecture on morals?"

"But-"

"But nothing." Slider's dad interjects, finally. "If they're happy, what's the harm in it?"

"It's wrong!" Slider's mom exclaims.

"According to whom? And are they on the front lines?" Her dad says. "That's enough of this. Rachel, let's talk about something else. How's the navy been treating you?"

The three of them talk quite a bit, till long after your food's been served and eaten. Santa brings up a cake for the girls, a slightly bigger one than last time, and agrees to just put the check on your tab- which you both know he'll probably zero out sooner or later anyway. You've no idea where he makes his money, but with as generous as he is here, you doubt it's in the restaurant business.

You part ways with Slider's family in the parking lot- they're off to see some of the other sights, while you have to check into a hotel and get back to the hospital. The hotel proves to be somewhat difficult, though you eventually secure a pair of rooms near the airport and base- you'd have stayed on post, but everything there is full up with the fleet coming home.

From there you head back to the hospital, where you're directed to Anya's room- she's only just out of surgery, in her own intensive care room. You're met there by Dr. Reed, who looks tired. "Mr. Bishop." She says, again blocking the door. "She's resting right now, I'm going to have to ask you to let her sleep. Why don't you come on down to my office, and we can talk?"

Dr. Reed hesitates, and then nods. "Alright, fine. if you do wake her up, you can answer to the floor nurse."

You hold your tongue and open the door, careful to keep it quiet. Inside, Anya is asleep- probably sedated. She's got IV lines running into each arm and an oxygen mask, and still looks pale and weak, though in the dark of the room it's hard to tell. On the other hand, her breathing appears to at least be steady and sure, which is an improvement over when you brought her in. Her neck is wrapped in gauze, though you're not sure why, given the presence of a heal witch.

You watch her long enough to reassure yourself, then start to step out of the room.

"Father?" Anya's weak voice interrupts you. Inwardly, you curse- you did just promise to not wake her up.

"Go back to sleep, Anya." You whisper, walking back over to her bedside. "We'll be here when you wake up, ok?"

She pauses, and, for a second, you think she's gone back to sleep. "You promise?" She asks, just as you step away.

"Of course. Go back to sleep, we'll see you in the morning."

This time she doesn't respond, though you wait long enough to make sure she's gone to sleep before you step back out.

"So how bad was she?" You ask.

"If she wasn't a fighter, she'd have never made it." She says. "But, as surprising as this sounds, that wasn't the real problem."

"What?"

She sighs. "Her implants were different from theirs." She indicates the girls. "I'm not sure if it was next gen or a prior one, but it completely replaced part of the top of her spinal column. We've repaired the damage as best we could, but-"

"But?" You prompt.

"She'll need to keep her VDNI implant for the rest of her life." She says. "We had to get inventive, it's acting as part of her spinal cord now. She shouldn't notice any change, but we'll have to keep up with her. We'll want to see her here at least once a year."

You nod- you were afraid it'd be worse, like she'd lost use of her legs or something.

"There's something else, too." Dr. Reed says. "Her bloodwork is still out, but the initial findings look like she was pretty heavily drugged. Her immune system is shot all to peices, you'll have to be very careful with her. We're considering giving her some things to support it until it can rebuild itself. But that's why that infection was so bad, she just couldn't fight it."

"Why would they do that?" You ask. "I mean, it was the soviets, right? that's not natural?"

She shakes her head. "Not at all. Probably to prevent her body from attacking and rejecting the implant. but it means you should also keep an eye on the other girls. They've been off longer, and had longer to recover, but it's unlikely their immune systems are as strong as they should be. We'll need bloodwork to confirm that though."

You nod.

It's not really a good idea to give antibiotics to someone who isn't displaying symptoms, as it kills off the symbiotic bacteria in their digestive tract. All we can really do is watch their health carefully, keep them away from sick people and take them to a doctor at any signs of illness.
