You are Lord William Bordain, Lord of Morderengrad and the Norther Valley. Some call you the Iron Lord, as your wealth flows from the arms and armor you sell, and your demeanor is as unflinching and cold as castle-forged steel. Other have taken to calling you “The Grey Giant”, in reference to your great size, less-than-warm demeanor, and your recent marriage to House Tollett of Grey Glen.

You are a Lord by right of Murder, having slain the Targaryen children in the Sack of King’s Landing. After years of solitary brooding, you decided to rejoin the greater world. You brought order to your lands, unveiled a traitor, and wedded the lady Alyssa Tollet, who now bears your child.

Which means that you have a legacy to forge for your future child. You will not leave your flesh and blood without care or resources, and so you have dived into the management of your lands and holdings, to procure a bright future for yourself and your children. But storm clouds darken the horizon. Tywin Lannister has asked that you seek to supplant Jon Arryn, your liege lord, as Hand of The King. Further, Oberyn Martell has crossed you, and this you will not let go unpunished.

You have recently agreed to a compact with the Lynderlys, that will see your weapons on their ships taken to Gulltown, to be moved around the Seven Kingdoms and across the Narrow Sea. You have also taken their second son Stefon as your squire. You have decided to spend some of the ever-narrowing window before your wife is bed-ridden by pregnancy acquainting yourself to the various Lords of the Vale. You ride to Runestone, the home of Lord Royce, visiting other nobles along the way.

You've currently met the Corbrays, Lyonel and his wife the Lady Constance, and dined with them. Lyonel inquires how long you intend to stay as his guest.

>How long?
>>
>>41377099
Gah, captcha ate my trip. My bad.

Also,
Remember, your wife's condition proceeds apace, as all pregnancies do. Assuming you spend only a single day with the Corbrays, one with the Waynwoods, and another with the Royces, you will return home just as she enters her 4th month.

Other than that, welcome back.
>>
I think it would be best if we kept the visits short. We can leave in the morning.

>>
>>41377282
>>41377284
Do we really want to spend all that time hanging around? This is pretty much a vacation for us where we also make some friends in the process.

We should get back so we don't spend 3 threads on this and have Page disappear for another year. I want to see our child born, follow up on Tywin's request, and see the Greyjoy Rebellion sometime before A Dream of Spring comes out.
>>
>>41377311
From Page's description, just staying the night is the default and he is asking if we want to hang around longer.
>>
I vote we rest and then move on. We accomplished our goal of meeting the Corbray's face-to-face in a casual setting so they can see that we are not, in fact, secretly a Terminator
>>
>>41377284
You'd arrive home by roughly the end of the first week of the 4th month. Just in the start of the 2nd trimester.

From what you understand, at this juncture, while she might lose the child, she herself is unlikely to be harmed.

>>41377311
The bare minimum varies. Hospitality wise, given that you're not in the midst of an urgent matter, a single full day would be considered a brief but acceptable visit. Leaving the next morning would be considered moderately rude, but with a successful Persuasion check, would be forgivable, given your wife's condition.

Some houses might insist or ask for more time.
>>
>>41377447
A single full day then.
>>
>>41377447
Two or three days
>>
>>41377447
We leave after lunch then
>>
>>41377447

A full day. Maybe two.
>>
>>41377333
You should get a minimum of 5 threads out of me before school starts again. And depending on how the first weeks go, I may have more free-time than in the past.

But yeah, my plan is to have you back in Morderengrad maybe by the end of this thread, definitely by the end of next.
>>
>>41377553
Every time I see Iron & Hate quest I squee

Every time a thread ends I dread I'll have to wait another year to see more

I'm interested in it, though I doubt I'll be able to post much, given the time differences.

I do think it's super cool that Plasma gave him tips, and that Squire asked me for some as well.

I was also horrified that someone in his thread didn't know who Karban was.

Alright, that's enough time on the vote...
Which is a multi-part tie, assuming no one changed their votes.

Alright, you'll stay MOST of the next day, but not spend the night again. That's the threadbare for acceptable.

As a small side note, I keep a running tally of ways you guys have or will break Canon. So far, you've only got one, but it's a doozy that might snowball.

You're very likely to break canon again in several years, given your current course. (Stefon canonically doesn't survive the Greyjoy Rebellion)

I'm looking forward to watching you guys totally fuck up the plotlines of the books.

>>41377845
Easily enough.

"We'll pass the morning with you, Lord Corbray, and no doubt lunch as well, but we must return to the road by the afternoon."

"So soon?"

"You'll forgive me my fears, I hope, but I do not wish to tax my lady wife too much. She insists she can bear it, but if all this riding strain her or harm the child, I would blame myself. Best I get her back to my Maester as swiftly as I can."

PERSUASION CHECK: SUCCESS.

"I understand, Lord William. My wife and I try for a child as well, and I know how bitter my tears would be to lose one. Besides, while they may speak of you as a brute, and a slayer of children, no one claims you do not love your wife. I think your wedding cost more than Robert's!"

He laughs, and you nod your head in acknowledgement of the compliment.

"Since you ride so soon, we can dispense with any grand feasts. But would you like to hunt in the morning, William? Or perhaps tour the town? I would offer a spar with you, as I hear you are a man of constant training, but I myself am not so martially inclined."

He nods his head.

"Perhaps we could go hawking, we lords and our ladies. A brief jaunt of the vale to catch some coneys."
>>
>>41378123
Oh, out of character, I've been thinking: I use the "best of three" rolls system, since that's the style that popular when I started the quest.

However, as one of the posters in the Brachen quest pointed out, it does lend the quest something of a "we can't lose" feel.

Would it devastate anyone to move to an "average of the first three" system, or some other way of rolling dice that makes our actions riskier?

And I suppose >>41378123 could have ended with a greentext prompt.

What is our Dreadnaught armor by the way? Is it a custom "beyond full plate" armor set only usable because we have Armor Mastery?

Armor is just so strong. It scales at -1 Combat Defense for 1 point of damage reduction. You have to be doing 6 points of damage per degree for Full Plate to be a bad idea against you.
>>
>>41378613
I was joking about that, we gained the Dreadnaught armour awhile ago, IIRC.

>Is it a custom "beyond full plate" armor set only usable because we have Armor Master
Pretty much, I figured if Armour Mastery makes all armour 1 catagory less, why not allow us to equip 1 catagory heavier.

Kinda like taking Monkey Grip to wield a huge size catory weapon, only with armour.

"A tour of your town would be delightful, Lord Corbray. Some restful walking after several days in the saddles, and taking in the sights of the city is just the thing."

"A tour it is, then! Come, let us rest tonight, and tour on the morrow, and then you can be on your way."

The bed provided is comfortable, if slightly threadbare and careworn. The sheets are patched and sewn in several places. You're reminded once more of the luck you had in finding such rich resources in your lands, and the difficulties Lyonel must face.

In the morning, you break your fast with smoked gammon and a porridge of thick grains and garlic. It's simple fare, but hearty. You're certain you won't hunger before luncheon.

The tour is much as it was when the captain of the guard gave it to you yesterday, with more nuance and details. Lord Lyonel is clearly proud of his family's history, and tells of how this building's brick is a different tone as a result of a Targaryen dragon, back in the days of Aegon the Conqueror.

You find that much of the town is older than you had thought, yet constantly maintained. The Corbrays may not have much, but they care for it well.

His attention to his people and his holdings reminds you of your own people. You wonder how they think of you. You make few appearances to them, remaining in your castle, but your bounty flows forth constantly, new buildings, guilds, and riches arriving at their doors daily. A strange image you must be to them.

The luncheon is grilled scallions over poached eggs on soda bread, and you talk to Lyonel on the terrible rations of the armies during the Rebellion.

Finally you head out.

Truly this is a beautiful summer day, the wind just right, the sun shining down. Riding through the rich lands of the Vale in such beauty stirs your heart. You ride beside your wife and squire, and pass the hours in cheerful speech. Both seem particularly happy/ relieved, no doubt pleased that none of the day's topics are drawing you a repeat of your terrible confessions of the other day.

The night is warm, and the air lays over you like a soft blanket as you sleep that night.

The next few days are spent slowly ascending into the mountains, before cresting them and beginning your descent. You're reminded of the Northern parts of the Westerlands, your childhood home. The Vale is so much rockier, the hills more wooded and dense, like a world primeval.

In time, you spy Ironoaks Castle ahead, and prepare yourself to meet the Waynwoods.

Of the Lords and Ladies you had planned to meet, you're happy the weather has put you in a good mood before arriving, as you have little hope of making it through this meeting with your patience fully intact. The Waynwoods are known for being officious, and standing on ceremony. Lengthy prayers before meals, formal announcements of guests with all their titles, and so on. A dignified house. Perhaps too dignified.

You present yourself at the gate of Ironoaks castle, and await to be escorted in.

" I hope Lord Waynwood doesn't talk our ears off with greetings and blessings," you grumble to your wife and squire. Stefon looks at you with a confused face.

Your wife nods her head as you approach the main hall. "He was always a man of proper decorum, and etiquette. To a fault."

As the herald prepares to announce you, you see Stefon's face take on an aspect of horror.

He whispers fervently to you. "My lord, you should-"

"William of House Bordain, Lord of Morderengrad and the Norther Valley. Friend of Eagle and Lion, Crowned by the Stag."

By the Seven, half of those aren't real titles. They're just making shit up now.

Your announcement is finished. To tarry might read as insult. Do you:

>pause to hear Stefon's words, risking the ire of your host
>enter the chamber immediately, motioning to Stefon that you will hear him later, to keep things civil between you and Lord Waynwood?

You pause before entering, turning to face Stefon. If Lord Waynwood gets upset, so be it. Upjumped bureaucrat...

"What is it, boy?"

"My lord, Lord Conrad Waynwood died in the Rebellion. The Lady Anya Waynwood rules here alone."

Ah. That might have made that conversation rather awkward.

"Well caught, Stefon." You say, as you turn and enter.

The hall of Ironoaks is a little higher quality than you expected. The white stone of the castle is supported in this chamber by 8 tall pillars of dark wood, carved to resemble towering trees supporting an arched ceiling of branches. The floor's white stone bears a green carpet leading to the dias. It looks almost like some strange stone garden.

Lady Anya, a woman probably a decade or so your senior, sits in state, around her a gaggle of children. Seriously, there are two boys sitting in state, and around them are four girls of varying ages. The oldest is roughly the age of Stefon, as is the oldest boy.

Lady Anya herself has dark hair, though not true-black like your wife's. Her face is heart-shaped, and her eyes set and intense.

"Lord William, welcome,"

"Lady Anya," You say, bowing your head. "Thank you for seeing me. Allow me to introduce my wife, Lady Alyssa, and my squire, Stefon of House Lynderly."

She nods her head regally. "I bid you all welcome within my home, and offer you the salt and bread of a proper host. May you fear no blade or venom in my home, and your sleep be sound and safe."

A steward approaches, with an uncut loaf of bread and a dish of salt. Few people care to leave the loaf uncut, and ancient sign that you had not tampered with it. As you pick it up and tear it, you note it is still hot from the oven. Father and Mother, the woman takes this seriously. You tear the bread for yourself, your wife, and your squire, and all take a bite. You also each take a pinch of the salt, which is grey and fragrant. You're reminded that Ironoaks collects sea-salt along its beaches.

Once you and your party have eaten, the steward carries the plate to lady anya, who tears a small piece of the bread for herself, and a pinch of the salt.

The formality out of the way, she introduces her children.

"Lord William, this is my eldest son, Morton. Beside him is his sister, Alyse. Their twin sisters Cinna and Alanna. My second son Donnal, and my daughter Jaella. My third son and fifth daughter are both sleeping, being too young to withstand the duties of rulership for long.

You'll say this for the late Lord Waynwood, he bred like a Frey. He and his wife were only married on your 4th nameday. 8 children in 15 years. By the Mother...

"What brings you to our lands, Lord William?" The Lady Anya's question rouses you from your reverie.

"Oh, our liege Jon Arryn told me that many of the Lords of the Vale did not know what to think of me, given my long seclusion, and the grim nature of my past. He recommended that I visit the various houses of the Vale, to better ease my neighbors."

Oh William, You've made an 'old' woman's day with you trying to prevent the spaghetti to fall from your pocket
>>
I feel like the next time we get some XP, we should bump Will to 4 and invest one of our Destiny Points into the Dutiful trait.

Am I right in that this is an Intrigue exchange, our goal being Friendship(Make her Amiable or better without pissing off our wife) and hers being Service(Get the Grey Giant Dick)?
>>
For someone famed for having a Will of Iron, ours is surprisingly low.
>>
>>41381475

Your wife settles down as Lady Anya laughs.

"Well said, Lord William. Forgive my forwardness. Too often young men like yourself come to my hall hoping to gain more than their words alone will say. I've found it easiest to weed them out as quickly as possible."

She rises. "My stewards will show you to your chambers, and I shall check with the cooks. If all is going well, we should dine in an hour or so."

She glides out of the room, her train of children following her obediently, almost like young ducks, or sheep, as the steward leads you another way.

When you reach your rooms, your wife is fuming quietly to herself. You pick up "rotten trick" and "a little warning, perhaps?" as well as some unflattering adjectives.

Do you wish to
>console her,
>make light of the situation,
or
>let this thing play itself out?

>>41381583
You actually recently increased your will to 4, and it was a very short one. The full intrigue rules are a little dry for quests.
>>
>>41381434
By the way, as we were not influenced by her Seduce, at the end of the round we are within our rights to change our disposition one step. I vote we move down one step.
>>

>>

Seconded.

You reach out, pull your wife in, and kiss her. After the kiss, you keep her encircled in your arms, as she fumes for a few moments more, before settling down, clearly mollified for the moment.

She smiles at you, touching your face. "You know, my Lord, displays like that will make people think the Iron Lord is starting to rust."

"Let them think what they want. A man cannot be iron all the time."

The two of you spend some quality time with each other until the steward announces the coming dinner.

You walk into the dining hall hand-in-hand with your wife, to be greeted by the great wall of Waynwoods. You see all the children you had met before, as well as two who can be no older than 5, the youngest boy and girl.

The opening prayer is as long and stuffy as you expect it to be, but soon it is done, and the meal begins.

What do you want to talk about?
>Write in options
>>
>>41381898
Inquire after the health of her children and how their educations proceeds. If there's anything mothers love to talk about, it's their kids.
Ask how her lands have been, test the waters to see if there might be room for economic cooperation. I don't think the Waynwood's lands are particularly close to ours but they do have a port and we're about to build a canal. Maybe we could trade?
>>
>>41381898
How she came up with names for her kids? What it's like to be a Lady running a house? What products she might have to trade for iron? How is she doing?
>>
>>41381986
Yeah that sounds good.
>>
>>41381898
Kids, salt and gossip
>>
>>41381986
thirded. Let her give childrearing tips as well.

You latch onto the first topic you can think of: the children. She has so many, their care must be a constant concern. You inquire into their health, the history of their names, and how their various studies are going. You learn that the youngest girl has a small cold, but she's expected to be perfectly well within day or two. Most of their names are for older members of the house: uncles, cousins, mothers and fathers.

She manages the lands well with the help of her advisors and staff. The salt of the sea, the timber industry, and a profitable source of potting clay have kept her family's fortunes stable for decades.

At your request, she begins unloading tips for bringing up children, and that takes over an hour, with her recommending this herb for that illness, this sport, that fruit, all in the interest of your future child.

Overall, you seem to overcome the initial awkwardness of your first meeting fairly well, though your wife is less of a supportive presence than usual. Maybe she steal harbors some anger. Or maybe she just resents 80 minutes of instruction on how to raise her child from someone she just formally met.

The Lady Anya seems to deflect or move past any discussion of trade. Maybe she relies overmuch on her advisors, and so cannot provide details, or perhaps she thinks such discussion is uncouth for the dinner table. Or maybe she just doesn't want to trade with you, but doesn't wish to be rude. It's hard to tell. The woman is social, like your wife, and much more skilled at intrigue and implications than you.

How long will you spend with the Lady Anya? Or, as her guest, I should say?
>>
>>41382308

About a day or two.
>>
>>41382308
About the same amount of time? Like we're pretty much trying to make up for lost time in seeing the surrounding areas, but you know, pregnant wife and don't want to leave our lands unattended too long.
>>
>>41382308
As little as possible. Once again, let's use the pregnancy and gtfo.
>>
>>41382308
>Maybe she steal
>How long will you spend with the Lady Anya? Or, as her guest, I should say?
Smooth, same as Corbray
>>
>>41382308
I think we could get away with leaving in the morning. I want to get moving.
>>
>>41382377
>>41382362
>>41382353

You inform the Lady Anya that you and your wife must be gone by the next evening, in order to return to your lands before she's too weighed down by the child.

She smiles at your wife, and commiserates with her, saying that she knows the difficulty of being confined to a castle because of pregnancy. She urges your wife to take a stronger role in your finances and holdings, to give her something to pass the time when she's bed-ridden in the late months.

The evening and next morning pass uneventfully.

Hmm. My next section is too big to just drop on you guys here, given that I need to bow out in a an hour or so, and I'm hitting a wall after my dinner. (Full, warm, tired.)

So I think I'll save it for next time.

END OF SESSION.

NEXT TIME, ON IRON AND HATE: YOU FINALLY SEE RUNESTONE. YOU MEET YOHN ROYCE. WE FINALLY GET TO GO BACK HOME AND DON OUR DREADNOUGHT ARMOR.

As ever, I'm just going to leave this thread open for the next 3 or so hours. Any questions, comments, concerns, or suggestions will be read, and likely answered by me.

And I will waddle over to sup/tg/ to archive this.

Archive done.

I SAID MAYBE. But yeah, I'm bummed too.

It was a matter if I could fit your stuff with Royce in this one, and I can feel myself flagging. Basically, I posted >>41381631 and immediately lost energy, You may note that after that, the dialogue drops out of the quest. I just wanna sleep, but I got a thing I got to do at midnight, so I'm going to become a lump for a while.

So is there going to be changes in rolls from now on? It seems that everyone is against moving to Average of 3, and today just proved how Best of 3 turns into cant-fail.
>>
If our actions regarding LF preclude him from becoming Master of Coin, will Karban take his place?
>>
>>41382765
Thank you for running! Always love reading with this comes up
>>
>>41382793
I'll look into a couple options, and propose the ones I think have the best fit in a later thread.

>>41382825
It's not outside the realm of possibility. It would be a nice nod to Princely's great work as well.

Sorry on the huge delay in answering those, I basically popped over to some shows on my hard-drive, and mindlessly pushed through a couple.

God I can't wait to see our Dreadnaught Armor.

We paid a fuckton for it compared to an ordinary suit of full-plate. I understand the concept of Diminishing Returns, but still.

Also: Dreadnaught Armor already has an appearance in the books. The Crown commissioned an absurdly heavy suit for "Robert Strong" to wear. As if our parallelism to the Mountain wasn't strong enough already.

At least it should get Bobby B to stop calling us the Molehill
>>
>>41384991
Apparently I can't spell Dreadnought.
>>
>>41384875
I wonder what way canon would go if that happened.
The crown's debt was mostly due to LF's massive embezzlement. No amount of tourneys on earth could add up to 3 million dragons during the most prosperous summer in history.
Combine that with Karban being a literal money-wizard and a dedicated worker... the crown would probably end up running a surplus!
>>
>>41385080
There's a bunch of weird things that are gonna end up happening to canon by the time we get to GoT time. Especially depending on how you handle the Greyjoy Rebellion.

Already, you have the heir of Highgarden no longer crippled, meaning the power dynamics of the Reach are going to change. Further, since Oberyn didn't cripple him, the animosity between the Martells and Tyrells is moderately reduced in this timeline.

Oh, that reminds me of something. A great secret I've been hiding from /tg/.

Your wife uses a modified statline of Arianne Martell. You've secretly had a HDW the entire time.
>>
>>41385240

What does HDW stand for?

Hot Dornish Wife. It's a running joke from the very first thread of the "original" Game of Thrones Quest. (original is in quotes because another one started one week before the House Karban one, but few remember it now) But yeah, in the first House Karban thread, they decided to send out word they were looking for a wife, and a popular option (also an UNpopular option, given the politics of the situation) was for Karban to marry a Hot Dornish Wife. It's since become a meme in all the GoT quests, because Karban didn't marry before the end, and none of the other quests have done it Pic related for WHY it's a meme.

Ahhhh.. thanks Page.
