Kaori shifts around in my arms several times, each time she grumbles.
I can tell she's not sleeping very easily. Well, she IS asleep right now. So I guess she's trying to get to double-sleep? I'm not sure.
"Hey." I run my hand through her hair, "Don't force yourself to sleep, we can just talk if you want."

She grumbles, before rolling over.
"Okay, what do you want to talk about?"
"About what's bothering you so much. You usually don't have any problems sleeping. I've seen you fall asleep standing up before."
"H-hey! When did you see that?!"

I sigh, "My point is, something is really bothering you and I want to know what it is."
"I'm just.. upset, is all."

"Is this about earlier?"
"Maybe a little.."

I hug her a little tigher, hugs solve everything.
"Kaori, we came back, we got Aiko, what is wrong?"
"It's not just that, Masami. It's going away somewhere dangerous, it's the uncertainty of not being able to find you. I was really, really worried; and you just pretended like nothing happened when you got back."

She tugs on my shirt, "That makes me really upset, you know. Everything with Fortune isn't helping, either."

"I know, I'm worried about it too."
"Wait!"

Kaori sits up, "I thought you said that you were certain this was going to work!"

"Of course it's going to work!" I say almost immediately.
That's when I notice Kaori giving me the evil eye.

"You said the same thing earlier with Aiko asked about it."

"W-well, I sort of said it because I wanted her to feel better, but."
I think about the plan in detail for just a minute.
"I'm sure it'll work! Honest!"

"Masami." Kaori crosses her arms, "I know you well enough to know when you're not certain about something."
"It's just- It makes sense! I just don't know how to test it."

"So you don't know if it will work at all, is that what you're saying."
Kaori is really pouting now!

"No! I didn't say that!"
"Yes you did!"

Did I? No! No I didn't say that.

"I think it's the best chance we have, and that's final!"
"Masami, I think we should think about a backup plan. Now is a good time to do it."

"What other plan is there?!"

"Well, we could DESTROY Asai."
"That sounds hard, what else?"

"How about capturing him and putting him in jail? That's what they do with bad guys, right?"
"I don't think that's going to work, Kaori. He's stronger than a jail cell."

"Well.. Um, then there's-! Wait."

I grab Kaori's arms.
"Hold on, let's not dwell on this now while we're trying to sleep. We might wake ourselves up and then wake up every person sharing this dream."

Kaori is about to say something, but then catches herself.
"Besides, there is plenty of time to think about this in the morning, when we're with Mom. Mom knows Asai better than anyone, so it's best to just leave this up to her."
"But-"

"No buts!" I shush her. She pouts as I gradually pat her shoulder.

Then I realize that I need to change the subject fast, she's about to start asking more questions!
"So!" I interrupt the next thought she's about to have, "Did you know Julie was made from a SPACE ROCK!?"
"W-what?!" Kaori gasps.

"It's true! Isn't that cool!? Asai told her-"
"Wait, you're listening to something Asai said?"

"I AM NOT A SPACE ROCK!"

We shift on the bed to face Julie, who was apparently eavesdropping on us the whole time. She's wearing plain blue pajamas, with a cute pattern that's not found on her normal clothes.
"I didn't say you were!"
"I'M NOT A SPACE ROCK!"

Oh no, I completely forgot that everyone was here! Including Julie!
Before Julie can protest any more, I lurch forward and grab her into a hug!

"Erk!"
"I know you're not a space rock, Julie! You're my little sister! I just think that's really cool that you're made from one!"
"IT IS NOT!"

"I think it's cool, too!" Kaori grabs Julie on the other side.
"It's not cool! I'm a disgusting alien freak!"
"Stop saying these things, Julie. Everyone here loves you!"

She quiets down as Kaori sits back up again.
"You say Asai told you that? He was probably just getting on your nerves. I think what you can do is really neat!"

"Hmmph." She frowns.

"I-it's not that much, I don't want to scare her, too."

I can feel Julie trying to squirm away in my grasp, but I don't let her go.
"Come on! Show her! Show her!"
"I-I don't wanna!"

"I want to see it!" Kaori eggs her on.
Suddenly, I feel a twisting feeling in my arms as Julie frees herself almost effortlessly. It's like trying to hold onto a tide of water.
That's something else that she didn't show me earlier, I feel left out!

"That's so cool!" Kaori gushes.
"S-shut up, it's not cool!" Julie pouts.

They start to talk about powers and what each other can do with them. I start to peer across the bedscape to see who is and isn't awake right now.

Mom is out like a light, I can hear her snoring from here. Emillion has decided to cuddle right next to his sister. Haruko is several feet away, curled up into a ball with Mir, the invisible girl.

Which leaves.. The monster. He's sitting on the edge of the bed quite a ways off. I stand up and quietly make my way toward him.

"Hey." I pat him on the shoulder.
"Hello, Priestess." He says in his usual deadpan tone.

"Why are you awake? Or. Um. Here. Why are you here?"
"Something is bothering me."

"Want to tell me about it?" I nudge his shoulder.
"It's not my job to concern you with them. I'm just being unnaturally worried."

"I'm not your family, Masami."

"Someday you will be, I guarantee it." I cross my arms.

We sit in relative silence, I can hear Julie and Kaori talking away in the distance.

"Please tell me what's on your mind."

He sighs, leaning back on the bed.
"I didn't expect to live this long." He states.

"What!?"
"It's just." He tries to correct himself, noticing my outburst. "I was expecting to die at Fortune, defending Empress. Now that I'm here, I'm not sure what to do with myself. I'm feeling things that I cannot explain, and it's worrying me."

"Things like..?"

"I don't know." He grumbles. "It feels like someone has something that I desire, but I lack the ability to grasp it."
"That sounds like jealousy." I pout, "Who are you jealous of?"

"..Emillion."
"..Why? What does he have that you don't?"

"It's not really what he has, it's that he was meant to defend someone until the day he died as well. Somehow, he's found a way to give purpose to his life. I don't know how, but that is the thing that I want."

"..Hey, Do you want to help me test the card I'm going to use against Asai tomorrow? I think it might help with some of these problems?"
"What's it going to do?" He mopes, "End me?"

I slap him on the shoulder, "No! Don't say anything like that again!" Arms cross, pout.

"Then.."
"It's an experiment. I'm going to try to do what happened with Emillion. If it works, maybe you can get that?"

"..You think so?"
"I don't know if it will make you feel better, but it will make you be like him! That's close enough, right?"

"I would like that. Thank you Priestess."

Our conversation is interrupted by a distant squeak.
"Oh no! I'm late for work!" Mom yells on the other side of the bed.

"MOM! WAIT! YOU DON'T HAVE TO GO TO WORK!"
Too late, she woke up and disappeared from Kaori's dream.

"I should go get her before she tries driving to Fortune."
"Please do, Priestess."

I'm hoping to start Early on Saturday, maybe we can get much of the prep work done before we confront Asai, wouldn't that be great?
