Kaito awakens in Shao Kahn's large bed. It takes him a moment to remember where he is, at which point he reflects on the irony that he has now slept in both the beds of Shang Tsung and Shao Kahn, both after their apparent demise.

He feels a large, fluffy and warm creature holding onto him tightly. Turana, his sphinx companion, snoozes softly alongside him. Since the white eagle-man Asgaarth healed the wounds she sustained in battle against a Tormentor, she has been sleeping soundly. Kaito looks out the window and sees that it is night; a great white moon hangs over the Outworld landscape.

Kaito smiles and brushes aside some of the hair from her lovely human face. She purs softly and her paws idly move and hug his leg some more. She's been a wonderful companion so far--faithful, dedicated and powerful. Her study of magic has come in handy more than several times over, including being able to pilot the interdimensional nethership that they stole from the late Shang Tsung.

Kaito looks towards the door and doesn't hear any more fighting going on like when he had fallen asleep. Perhaps the battle is over and won? He should find Kitana and get an update from her.

Get the Wrath Hammer and put on one of Shao Kahn's spare helmets, then when we go to the throne room stay in the shadows. Wait for someone to ask "Kaito?" and then dramatically step out of the shadows and be all "No. Kaito Kahn!"

Kaito carefully disentangles himself from Turana, leaving her asleep. He heads towards the door, but then sees Shao Kahn's wrath hammer and one of his spare helmets.

An idea comes to his mind that quickly takes root and he finds himself unable to deny it.

Kitana stands in the throne room, conferring with Rain, Sheeva and a few others, including Asgaarth. A figure emerges from the shadows and Kitana turns to look.

"Kaito?"

"No... I AM KAITO KAHN!"

Kaito stands there wearing Shao Kahn's helmet and holding up the wrath hammer as best he can due to its weight.

Sheeva and Rain are both heavily unamused but to the surprise of all, Kitana bursts out laughing. It's funny to see the 10,000-year old princess have a sense of humor; she has a very attractive laugh and should do it more often, but there's not much to laugh about in her day-to-day life.

Kaito definitely provided some much-needed comedy with this stunt, however, despite the nasty glances from the others.

"Oh, Kaito, I needed that," Kitana says, wiping a tear from her eye and taking off her blue veil. "Come now. Drop those things and join us, there is much to discuss."

She looks over at the throne. "...The title of Kahn must be kept, at least temporarily, if we hope to hold the peace."

She approaches it and turns. "As the last of my father's royal line, King Jerrod of Edenia, and as the adopted daughter of Shao Kahn, I declare myself Kahnum of Outworld. Let all who oppose me step forth."

Immediately, Rain goes to a knee and bows his head. "I swear fealty to Empress Kitana. Long may she reign."

Sheeva does the same, as does Asgaarth and several guards present.

Kaito remains standing and Kitana looks at him questioningly.

"I mean no offense, your majesty, but I am of Earthrealm. I think of myself as your friend and ally, but I am not a subject of your land."

She nods. "I understand, Kaito. You need not pledge fealty to me, and I recognize Earthrealm's independence. I grant you free passage in my lands, provided you uphold my laws and do not disturb the peace I will strive to maintain."

Kaito smiles and bows his head slightly. "Of course, princess. Or is it Kitana Kahn, now? Would you like the helmet?"

She shudders slightly. "I'd rather not. For now, Empress Kitana will be the proper title of address."

She sits down on Shao Kahn's former throne and raises a hand. "All may rise."

Rain and the others stand and Kitana speaks. "There is still much work to be done. Many of our enemies have escaped, and many of Outworld's leaders have yet to recognize me as Kahnum."

She looks at Kaito specifically. "Kaito, I would ask for your help. There are certain tasks that need to be accomplished."

"Of course," Kaito nods. "What needs to be done?"

"I will allow you to decide your task. I need an ambassador, a scout or a manhunter. Which task would you most prefer?"

The empress nods. "This is a very important task for me personally, Kaito. Asgaarth knows of a temple in a land far, far to the north of here, in a land known as Lost Edenia. Shao Kahn conquered my realm and much of it was left to die in the frigid wastelands of northern Outworld. My task for you is to travel there and seek out this temple, but not to go inside, for it may be too dangerous. You may take all the time you need to prepare for this journey and all of my resources will be made available to you."

Kaito thinks for a moment before he takes out a map he stole from a ship. It shows the path to a place known as the Ice Caves, which are also located in the lands of Lost Edenia, far to the north. Perhaps Sub-Zero would be interested in joining this expedition...

"I do. Will it shorten our trip?"

"Only by a few days. The Temple is deep inland."

"Alright. I'm going to gather my things. I'll let you know when I'm ready."

The eagleman nods. "If you have any questions for me, I'll be here." He returns to Kitana's side.

Kaito goes and picks up Shao Kahn's hammer and helmet. After all, nobody else wants them.

Heading down to the dungeons, he discovers Jade still standing guard, casually leaning up against a wall, her emerald eyes trained on Mileena, unblinking and untiring thanks to the assassin's Edenian endurance.

"Kaito," she nods. The earthrealmer nods back before looking at Mileena.

I don't know much about Mortal Kombat's lore in general, but so far what we have seen, I would say the Mileena seems self-concious about her mouth.

If we think about it, why does she has it? She is Kitana's clone, she looks exactly like her except that one thing

Shang Tsung is a sorcerer with a centuries of expirience, one of the best in Outworld. I find it really unlikely that he couldn't fuse the tarakan blood properly, or even so, couldn't do a simple plastic surgery, or illusion.

So I have to think that it's there for a pourpose.
It is there because he knew Mileena would hate it.

She would hate it, hate to look at it, hate whoever makes note of it, and above all; would hate Kitana because she doesn't have to suffer the same way.

I think our best shot if we confirm our suspicion and open her eyes.
She might flip out, and never listen to us, she might put us high on her shit list, but it might also hinder the personality that Shao Kahn wanted to develop in her.

Again, she listens in silence. "Let me ask you a question: why do you want to be your sister? Because 'it's your purpose'? Why let Shang Tsung or Shao Kahn decide what you have to be? What about you? What do you want to be?"

Before she can reply, Kaito adds, "You can be great by being yourself, Mileena. I've never lied to you."

"I hate her," Mileena admits. "I hate my sister." This surprises Kaito slightly. Nearby, Jade looks on with concern.

"Why?" he asks.

"She has everything I don't have," Mileena says. "And it's not fair."

Kaito has to admit to himself that she was born into an unfortunate position in a bad time. Circumstances were against her ever since Shao Kahn's defeat.

Kaito looks into Mileena's orange eyes, searching for hints of treachery and deception. After a moment of not detecting either, Kaito apprehensively approaches the bars.

Mileena looks up at him, and he thinks he sees something in her eyes; nervousness, perhaps? Anticipation? Apprehension of her own?

Kaito nears her and stops before the bars. "No other way?" he asks.

Suddenly, Kaito feels a hand on his shoulder. He is forcefully turned around before he can make contact with Mileena and comes face-to-face with Jade.

The edenian pulls down her green mask and leans up, filmly planting her lips against Kaito's before the earthrealmer can protest. With a hand on the back of his neck holding him close, he can't pull away.

Kaito can hardly register what is happening as the beautiful ebon-skinned warrior kisses him. Mileena's eyes flare wide and she lets out a hiss as Jade pulls away. She looks at Jade accusingly, and the edenian smiles.

"Who could ever want to kiss you?" she says, laughing slightly.

Kaito can hardly believe his ears. Mileena's eyes twitch and she screams, reaching through the bars with her hands at Jade, who pulls Kaito away with her. "Stand back, Kaito. This mad dog clearly isn't meant to be touched."

Then, she whispers into his ear, "You're welcome for getting you out of that."

Mileena screams again, banging her fists against the cage, unable to form words in her fury. Jade turns him towards the stairs. "I think your visit is ended--she's clearly in no condition for more talking. I'll accompany you upstairs."

Kaito heads towards the throne room, intent on talking to Kitana about this matter, and a possible way to communicate with Earthrealm before travelling there. As he approaches it, he walks past the guards and through the archway.

The ominous throne is empty, but the room is not. Asgaarth and Rain are here, talking about something, but right from his entry, Kaito can tell something is up. Their body language and distance tell him they aren't exactly chumming it up.

Asgaarth turns to him as he enters and the expression on his eagle-like face lightens. "Kaito. Have you any word about our trip?" he asks, clearly eager to stop talking to Rain.

"Yeah... I was hoping to ask Kitana about something."

Rain turns his amethyst eyes upon the earthrealmer. "A matter demanded the Empress' attention. She can't be here to wait on you head and foot."

As Kaito is about to reply, Asgaarth puts a hand on his shoulder. "Perhaps I can be of assistance. Come, walk with me."

They both leave, and Kaito turns his head to catch one last nasty look from Rain before they do.

"Man, I'm getting real tired of that guy," Kaito mutters.

"You're not the only one," Asgaarth agrees. "I do not like having him in this fortress, but for a reason I cannot understand, Kitana consents to his presence. Perhaps it is because he too is edenian, and there are so few of us left... But enough of that. What do you need?"

"I was hoping to find a way to talk to a friend in Earthrealm, perhaps a spell or something."

The birdman thinks. "I know just the thing, if it yet remains. Follow."

Asgaarth leads Kaito up a long winding stairwell until a tower, the top of which allows them to see over much of the city and the lands beyond. The cloud rush by quickly here, and the air is more clear.

He leads Kaito to set of old door that he pulls open. "It has been very, very long since last I was in this fortress, but when I was, there was an item of great power kept in this tower for use only by the Emperor and Shang Tsung. Ah, wonderful. They have kept it."

In the center of a circular chamber lies a pedestal, upon which sits an orb that shimmers with many colors, causing it to display stars and nebula-like formations inside.

"This is a sphere with the power to project its user across realms in a spiritual, astral-like appearance. You cannot interact or touch anything, but you can observe and speak."

"That must be incredibly useful for spying and communication," Kaito notes.

"It is. Very few items such as these exist in the realms due to the level of power required to forge them. Shao Kahn likely took it from a realm he conquered. Kitana used it a few times to contact me, but when the Emperor ruled, he had this orb well-guarded. No longer, it seems."

He approaches it and stands on the other side. "All you need do is place your hand upon it and think of someone you know personally. You will appear to them and speak to them, if they allow it."

Kaito approaches the orb and is mesmerized by the beauty of its depths. "Kaito," Asgaarth snaps him out of the stupor. "I must warn you. The realms are many and wide, and if you do not focus on your location, your mind can become lost between worlds. You must always focus on who you are speaking to in order to maintain the anchor for your soul. This magic is dangerous, but I will be here to help you."

Kaito nods and takes a deep breath. "Alright. I'm ready."

Kaito closes his eyes, puts his hand on the orb and focuses on Sub-Zero, the younger Sub-Zero to be specific. He thinks hard and finds himself seeing strange images, blurred locations melting and whizzing by, half-formed places and murky concepts of location phase through his mind as his soul is whisked away in an astral projection across Outworld and into Earthrealm. There, he finds himself cutting through a land of snow and across icy waters. There is a boat there, and upon it, warriors work to maintain the sails.

Smoke is on the deck, overseeing them. They appear to be what is left of the human Lin Kuei after the Cyber Initiative. As for where they are headed, Kaito cannot say, but snow falls upon the waters around them, carried by great winds.

Kaito passes through the wood and into the hull of the ship, the darkened interior where candles burn alongside sticks of incense. There, Sub-Zero sits.

Kaito looks upon him, seeing the cybernetic augmentations that were placed upon him before his rescue. Thankfully they were able to save his soul, but the strain on his body must have been immense. Kaito speaks.

"Sub-Zero."

The Lin Kuei warrior looks up, his blue eyes cutting through the darkness. Slowly, the form of Kaito becomes clear to him, appearing like a specter. "Kaito... Is that truly you?"

"Yes, I'm calling you from Outworld. I'm sorry, but I didn't have your cell number."

"Amusing. What summons you to me?"

"A magic orb. I used it to ask if you'd like to help me with something."

"I will be forever grateful for my rescue from my former masters, but I am far from a portal. We are rowing to the southern seas, to Arctika."

"Arctika? What's there for you?"

"Empress Kitana has asked me to scout out the location of a temple in a region of Outworld known as Lost Edenia. It is a frozen land, apparently, but it also holds the ice caves that I have the map to, something that I think you are interested in."

Sub-Zero rubs the front of his mask. "Yes, I am... Very well, I accept. I will accompany you on this mission alone and leave Smoke in charge of my men. When can I expect you?"

"A day or so. I need time to prepare," Kaito tells him.

At that moment, the door behind Sub-Zero opens and Sareena walks in. "Kuai, I have--Kaito? Is that you?" She smiles.

They both offer a small wave as Kaito releases himself. Asgaarth uses his magic to help pull Kaito back to the real world.

"Woah, that was a rush," Kaito says, feeling light-headed. "That was... Wow."

"It has that effect on people," Asgaarth notes. "Do you wish to speak to someone else again? I know that it can be a draining process."

Kaito steadies himself after that last use of the orb and prepares himself for another go. Taking a deep breath, he places his hand upon it and focuses on Raiden, the god of thunder and lightning and protector of the realm of Earth.

Again he is whisked away across realms, only this time he is brought not to Earthrealm, but some kind of celestial place. Here, the rules of reality are thin and subject to the whims of the gods. Here, Raiden stands and speaks to several others in a strange coliseum-like structure built atop the clouds. The figures he speaks to are all varied; one of them is made of fire, another of water and a third of earth, with some human-looking entities there as well, all with white eyes like Raiden's.

"But we must ensure it is protected," Raiden says. "I have foreseen dark visions of its theft."

"After the last, we have taken the necessary steps," another god speaks, this one with long white hair pulled back into a ponytail. "So long as the Jinsei remains pure, its power will--"

They all stop as Kaito manifests alongside Raiden.

"Uh... What's good, gods?"

Raiden turns. "Akayama Kaito. You should not be here."

"Indeed. You should rest up and keep your mind sharp for our journey in two days."

Asgaarth helps Kaito back to the throne room. Unfortunately, neither Kitana nor Rain are present, as it is late and they have likely gone to bed. Just as they are about to leave, Kaito hears a noise from behind the throne.

"Wait," he says, parting from his friend and walking towards the throne. "What is..."

He looks around behind it and discovers a woman hiding. Her eyes are wide and fearful and long blonde hair frames her lovely features. She is wearing a golden and green bikini not unlike one worn by Princess Leia.

"Have you been back there all day?" he asks.

She shakes her head. "I've been hiding elsewhere," she explains. "I jumped behind the throne when I heard you entering. Please don't punish me."

Nervously, she offers Kaito a hand and he helps her to her feet. She shifts from one foot to another as she avoids looking him in the eyes.

"What did you do for Shao Kahn? Do you have any knowledge, or particular skills?" he asks, interested in knowing if she had any particular skills.

"I serve Master Shao Kahn however he pleases," she replies. "Whatever he desires me for, I give it to him."

Kaito feels repulsed by the implications behind her words. "Why you?" he asks, knowing that it could simply be because of her beauty.

"Master Shao Kahn liked me the most," she says. "He fed all of the other girls to the tormentors, but he kept me." She looks away. "Where is Master Shao Kahn? He'll be angry with me if he sees us talking."

"He's dead."

She looks up at him now with a shocked expression. "But... Then what happens to me? I... I don't..."

Slowly, she nods. "Alright. Follow me."

Kaito looks back at Asgaarth. "I've got it from here."

The eagleman nods and leaves through another archway.

Kaito takes her towards Shao Kahn's bedchamber, but before he can open the door, she grows nervous. "This is Master Shao Kahn's room, we should not go inside!"

"Don't worry. I've taken it over for the time being. He's gone, remember?"

Opening it up reveals Turana sitting on the large bed, reading Shang Tsung's spellbook. She looks up and smiles. "Kaito."

He walks over and sits on the bed, stroking her back a bit, which causes her let out a comfortable sigh. "Sleep well?"

"Very. I feel much stronger now."

The slave girl timidly enters. "This is... Well, she doesn't have a name," Kaito says to the sphinx. "She was Shao Kahn's servant. I thought she could use a safe place for the night."

Turana nods. "Most certainly. Come in, child."

The slave sits on the edge of the bed. Turana begins to speak with her.

Kaito listens for a while, but the headache causes him to close his eyes and relax. Before he knows it, he's asleep.

When he awakens in the morning, Turana and the slave girl are both gone, and the doors are open. Sunlight streams in through the window and Kaito rises and stretches.

Today is a day for preparation; tomorrow morning, you leave.

Kaito gets ready and heads to the throne room. There are more guards than usual posted outside, and when Kaito enters, he sees why.

Nobles and various lords have come to the fortress to speak to the new Empress and hear her words in turn. Kitana sits, and alongside her is Rain and Jade, and behind Jade is Ermac. Kaito stands off to the side as a tall figure speaks to the queen on her throne.

He is a large, blue-skinned figure with an elegant eagle-like helm and headdress that evokes Aztec imagery in Kaito's mind. The man kneels before Kitana.

"Who is that?" he asks Asgaarth.

"That is Kotal, an osh-tekk warrior and last of his kind. He served Shao Kahn, but is now pledging himself to the new Kahnum."

Kaito listens in. "I accept your oath, Kotal. Please rise." The imposing figure does so. "I cannot undo the damage my adoptive father caused to your people and realm. But you have my word that I will strive towards bringing peace to this land and will ensure that no realm or people suffer as yours did."

"I am grateful for your kind words, my queen," Kotal says with a bowed head. "You honor the memory of my forefathers with your kindness. May your rule be long and true."

Kotal stands aside as the shokan royal family steps forward.

Curious, Kaito walks over to speak to Kotal. The osh-tekk warrior turns to face him as he approaches.

"Kotal, isn't it? I am Akayama Kaito, of Earthrealm."

"It has been many moons since last I set foot in Earthrealm. You are well-met."

The human holds out a hand to shake; Kotal's grip is firm and powerful. "You've been to Earthrealm?"

"Centuries ago. I was known as a god to your people."

Suddenly, everything clicks. "Not my people, but another culture. You may be interested in knowing that the mythology of the Aztec people has survived to the present day."

Kotal does indeed seem pleasantly surprised. "To them, I was known as Buloc, the god of war. I helped them make war on an invading force of conquerors, but they fell ill."

"Yeah, that's one of the more unfortunate aspects of the land's history," Kaito admits. "But it's amazing to actually meet the person responsible for their mythology. It makes me wonder how many other figures in Earthrealm's history were actual people from other realms..."

At that moment, the shokan king Gorbak and his wife Mai finish pledging themselves to Empress Kitana. A family steps forward, dressed in elegant golden finery. Resembling ancient Persian or Egyptian nobles, the father and mother kneel, followed by their three daughters. Behind them are several guards and servants, an obvious display of their wealth.

"Who are they?" Kaito asks.

Kotal answers, "They are a royal family of edenians, though not related to the throne by blood. Jaroslav and Nerusheri, and their daughters: Tanya, Isis and Natasha."

Kaito watches the edenian family as they pledge. "How many other edenian families are there?"

"They are the last. Kitana, her bodyguard Jade, the prince Rain and they are perhaps all that remain of their realm."

Kaito looks at Kotal. "What do you think of the Empress?"

"I think she will be a fine ruler. I never met the Queen Sindel, but I understand she was a powerful, noble and wise leader. If that is so, Kitana takes after her well."

As the family finishes its pledge, the father Jaroslav offers his daughter Tanya to take a place in Kitana's court as a representative of their family. Kitana accepts this and the young-looking edenian takes her place several paces from the side of the throne.

As they depart, Kaito scans the room from this new vantage point and sees amongst the many people gathered a man in the corner, sitting on a stone bench and drinking heavily from a gourd.

Bo' Rai Cho! Kaito has not seen him since the first Mortal Kombat tournament!

Kaito excuses himself from Kotal and approaches the Outworlder. "Master Bo' Rai Cho?"

The man looks up from his drink and laughs, drawing the ire of some of the others. "Kaito! I haven't seen you for some time! It is good that you survived. Come, come, drink!"

Kaito takes a seat next to him and takes a wooden cup. He remembers the strength of the drink from last time and gives Bo' a worried look. "Worry not, this is my ceremonial wine. It requires much more to get one drunk. If I must drink, then I can't have myself looking like a fool in our new Empress' throne room!"

Kaito nods and toasts to that before drinking the sweet-tasting blue liquid. It bubbles a bit going down the throat.

He looks out onto the courtroom floor and sees various figures come to pledge, one after another. Most of them are the leaders and overlords of cities and villages, minor locations with fractions of power. Kitana accepts all pledges brought before her and converses briefly with each. After the final leader pledges, Kitana rises from her throne to declare a feast in the great hall. The edenian family, the shokan royal family and all the assembled lords and ladies begin to disperse and mingle amongst each other now that the ceremony of pledging is past.

Bo' moves to stand. "Well, I should be going," he says. "Much to do! If you ever intend to drop by, Kaito, here is my sign."

He hands Kaito a coin that fits in the palm of his hand. "Most of the people in this city know where I live. Give it to any of them along with a bit of coin and they will lead you to my humble home."

Kaito finishes his drink and pockets the coin. "Thank you, Master Bo'. It was good to see you."

The bearded martial arts master nods and leaves.

Kaito chooses his moment and waits for Kitana to finish talking to Goro and his children. Despite Kaito being curious as to how Goro became a family man, he gently pulls her aside.

"Kaito. How go your preparations?"

"Good, good... I've got ideas lined up, I'll need some money and supplies."

"Of course. I'll send word to my newly appointed treasurer."

"Great. Listen, Kitana... I'm concerned about Jade."

"What? What do you mean?" She looks nearby and sees Jade talking to Sheeva, and actually sharing a drink with the shokan.

"I was talking to Mileena, trying to turn her to our side. I felt like I was making honest progress with her, when Jade interrupted and, well, kissed me and insulted Mileena, sending her into a rage. I felt like my progress with her was thrown out because of her actions."

Kitana looks concerned. "That is strange... But Kaito, I trust her. She wouldn't have done it without good reason. What did she interrupt, exactly?"

Kaito scratches the back of his head. "Mileena wanted a kiss. On her, you know... her teeth and, yeah... To see if I was lying. I meant it as a gesture of trust, I felt like she was opening herself up and was in a vulnerable position. But Jade stole the kiss and insulted her. She said she was trying to protect me, but it felt petty."

Kitana seems conflicted. "I cannot say for certain that I agree with either action you both took. Mileena is dangerous, but Jade could have been more tactful. I give you my word that I will speak to her on this, Kaito. She will listen to me."

"Alright. Thank you. I guess that's all I needed." Kaito looks around. "Say, did Tortek ever show up?"

Kaito crosses his arms, slightly worried at that news. "And where is Turana? I saw her last night, but haven't this morning."

"She came to me early in the morning with Shao Kahn's former slave. I freed the girl of any obligations to the throne, but she insisted on remaining in my service. I have made her into a handmaiden; I think she will be much happier. As for Turana, I have appointed her as my official court wizard, due to us not having any others. I believe she is in Shang Tsung's former tower."

Kaito nods. "Alright. That's all well and good, I suppose, if it's Turana's choice. Who is your treasurer, by the way?"

Kitana points out the man across the way. Kaito excuses himself from the Empress and walks over and manages to secure more than enough coin for any repairs or modifications to the ship that can be made within a day.

Kaito, now having a chance to secure supplies, heads to the storerooms. They are kept in the lower levels of the fortress, and many, many barrels of various goods and drinks are kept here. Kaito, under authority of Empress Kitana, orders several guards to gather up enough supplies for a two-week journey of several people and take it to Shang Tsung's nethership in the nearby port. Begrudgingly, they do so, and under his supervision they get water, vegetables and dried meats along with other useful supplies.

Afterwards, he heads up to Shang Tsung's tower to check on Turana. He finds her studying the books more and more and sneaks up on her, startling her with a shake. "Kaito!" she says with a laugh. "What are you doing?"

"Making sure you're still you," he says. "All this studying of dark magic... I'm worried about it."

She waves it away with her paw. "I know what realms of magic I don't wish to pursue, Kaito. Trust me. But I'm convinced that I can put all of this power to some use."

"So, you won't come with me on my new trip?"

Turana smiles. "If you want me to, I will, Kaito. But Kitana has asked some things of me that only an accomplished magic-user can achieve."

"Yeah, court wizard. That's one hell of a promotion."

"I am honored, but I'd like to think that it won't keep me here forever. I still wish to travel with you, when I'm not too busy with my new position. And all the magic and resources at my disposal! It's truly a grand opportunity."
