Roshi and Shen basically knocked out Krillin and Chiaotzu with gas and ran at King Piccolo after reports came in of him terrorizing Central City. Overall they actually fared very well, and scared the shit out of King Piccolo with the Mafuba. Drum intercepted the attack and King Piccolo destroyed the jar before it could seal away Drum. From there he got the last couple Dragon Balls. At the very least, it rekindled a spark of friendship between Shen and Roshi.

Gravity training seems like the obvious method of gaining strength going forward, but Tien wound up pretty strong considering he didn't have a faceroll super form and he didn't do too much training in intense gravity presumably.
