"No, I think I'll listen to Mom." I say, pouting. "It's not like I'm any good at this science stuff anyway, and I don't want to mess anything up."
"Well you can't just sit back and expect her to do all of it."

"..Well that's true, too. But where do I even start, now?"

"If you want my opinion," Kaori is looking mischevious, "You could try the same thing on your cards. They're not people."
"Wait! Hold on!" I almost seem defensive, "Those are still MY cards! I can't just experiement on them!"
"I know you care alot about them, but they're not in danger right now. Plus this could mean that you get more sisters, wouldn't you like that?"
"Weren't you the one saying that I have too many already?"

"I didn't mean it that way!" Now it's Kaori's turn to be defensive. "I mean, wouldn't you like it if your cards became sisters too?"

"I would! But now we're talking about using my cards as test subjects, and they can't tell me it's okay!"

Everyone, it's that time of the day again where I drive home.

Kaori seems confused, "Right about what?"
"I should try asking my cards. It seems crazy, but- Julie and Haruko. They're people now. Maybe more of my cards would like the same thing, and I just don't know because I've never listened?"

"When you put it that way." Kaori shakes my shoulder, "It DOES seem kinda crazy. Maybe you should just leave it to Mom."

"No no, now I really want to know, can my cards talk to me? I never tried it before."

"Masami." Kaori grabs my shoulders, "You have bigger things to worry about right now. You can try to make contact with your cards later."
"Hold on though, you're completely right about them maybe turning human!"

"What would turning them human do for you, Masami? The more cards that have turned human, the less powers you've had for yourself!"

That comment hits close to home.
"Kaori! Why would you say such a thing? Would you have liked it if Julie and Haruko were never born at all!?"
"No! I didn't say that! It's just you have big problems to think about and you're trying to experiment!" Kaori lets go and leans back, and then she pouts. "Earth to Masami, you have less than eighteen hours before Asai can run loose as he pleases! You don't even know how you would talk to your cards, yet."

"Of course I know, I would-"

"Of course, I would try talking to them in the other world. That's where cards live, right?"
Kaori frowns slightly, "I don't think that's how it works."

"Close enough, right? I might be able to hear them right now even, if I just listened!"
"Masami."
"Shh."

My ears tune to the faint levels of the quietest sounds in the room. I can hear my heart beating, Kaori's heart beating-
And Julie and Haruko arguing.
"..Okay maybe that's just not the way, but no worry! I'm certain I'll be able to talk to them."

"Masami." Kaori takes that stern sisterly tone, and stands up. "If you're going to spend all day trying to play dollhouse with your cards, go right ahead. I'm going to be helping Mom while you do that. Please come back when you realize that this is a waste of time."
She huffs and storms off.

I'm left sitting alone as the chaos of an early morning rages around me.
"I wonder if it was something I said." I think to myself.

Right now, I have five cards left. Some of them came from monsters, others came from drafting. I'm not sure what a card would have to say to me, but I would like to find out.

I should ask Mom.

I stand up and walk over to her, she seems to be relaxing in a chair after a rather stressful breakfast.
"Hey Mom."
"Hello Masami, give me a few more minutes befo-"
"Um, I was wanting to ask. Would it be okay if we did the tests on my cards, instead?"

"It's not really the same that way, Masami. Asai is a full-grown monster, and your cards aren't. It was a good idea you had, though!"

"In that case, would it be possible to talk to my cards?"
"..Why?"

"Well! I was thinking, the cards were Asai's monsters at one point. Maybe they know something about him or know some way to turn him. Do you think I can do it?"
"I don't know if it's possible, but you're welcome to try."

That wasn't very helpful.

I walk over to where Kaori is pouting and nudge her.
"Hey Kaori, I'm going to the other world, want to come?"

"You're still not trying to talk to your cards again, are you?"
"Of course! And it might help if I have someone coming along!"

".. You won't be long, will you?"
"Nope, it will only take me a minute!"
"Fine, I'll go." She crosses her arms. "But only because I don't want you staying away too long, and I want to be there when this doesn't work."

Wow she is really spiteful today. I wonder why?
"Then it's settled! Let's go!"
"W-wait! Aren't you gonna-"

I don't let her finish, she was probably going to say something that made me pout anyway.

The silvery shine of the other world is still as powerful as ever.
What I find strange is what is in the distance. Fortune HQ seems to have moved again. At least, I don't remember ever seeing it from the angle that it's rotated at now.

That's a bad omen.

"Darn it Masami!" Kaori tugs at my arm. "At least warn me a little before you run off and do that!"
Of course I won't in the future.

"How are you even going to do this?! Where are you going to start?!"

"Well.."

I think back to when I was able to 'jump' into Belle after I first made her. Maybe I could do the same thing now and see if anything has changed.

Reaching into my pocket, I take out my assortment of cards. Belle is the topmost card on the stack.

"What next?" Kaori says, tapping her foot.
"Let's try jumping into one of the cards, we'll start with-"

I look through the deck at likely candidates who might be able to talk to me.

Belle is a card that I made, so I'm not sure how lively that one might be. That rules out the speed card, too. So that leaves Cirrus and Melissa.

I've had Cirrus longer, so taking a peek inside probably wouldn't hurt much. I'm amazed Cirrus hasn't changed before now.
I flip the card out and hold it in front of me. Closing my eyes, I concentrate.

"EEEEEEEEEEK!" I hear Kaori screech as my eyes snap open!
The once silvery shine of the other world is gone! What's in its place is the feathery cotton of clouds below our feet!
Even though it looks like we should be falling straight through them, we're instead standing perfectly firm on top of them!

"W-W-W-W-W-" Kaori buries her face into my back, squeezing me to the point of discomfort.
"K-Kaori, I can't breathe."
"I AM SO SCARED OF HEIGHTS OH MY GOD WHAT DID YOU JUST DO?!"

"Kaori! Calm down! You can't fall here, you-"

Before I can finish, she shifts her entire weight to my back and causes me to trip and fall over! I land with a soft thud against the down of the solid clouds.

"Kaoooori."
"Masami, Masami, are we falling? Are we-"
"Kaori, we're fine, look, just open your eyes a little."

Her grip loosens.
"Y-yeah, I guess it's just, just an illusion."
"It's a very soft illusion."

"And you two are so warm!"

Wait, us two?
..Why do I feel another set of hands on my shoulder?

The two of us feel so warm.
We.
Us.

There's only two of us.
Yet something else thinks we're warm.

"Kaori." I struggle to say with my voice made of stone, "What did you just say?"
"I-I said, 'Yeah I guess it's just an illusion'."
"No, I mean after that."

She is oddly quiet for a second before gulping.
"I didn't say anything after that. What did you say after that?"
"I said 'It's a very soft illusion'."

"And I said 'You two are so warm'!"

"I didn't say that."
"But I didn't say that either."

Oh no.
"M-Masami."
"Either I accidentally took us to cuddleworld, or-"
"-orrrr" Kaori is hugging me tighter.

"Hey!" The phantom voice interrupts our trains of thought. "Cuddleworld sounds fun, can I go!?"

We carefully look behind us to see a girl standing over us in a purple outfit, she has both of her gloved hands clasped together.
"Y-your skirt is waaay too short from this angle." Kaori says with an amount of shock in her voice.

Kaori is right, and both of us have an unfortunate view. But I ask the most pressing question:
"Who are you?"

She stops, her eyes seem to narrow at that question.
"I don't know." Her confusion is thick in her voice. It's immediately replaced with glee.
"Let's play!"

She leaps onto both of us as we cough. She grabs us into a hug as we struggle to escape.
"M-Masami! This is all your fault, make it stop!"
"I don't know how!"

"Do you two know any fun games!?"
"It's called 'wear some pants'!" Kaori retorts as she tries to struggle away.

"Excuse me, stop, wait!" I sit up under her weight. "How long have you been here?!"
There's that look again, that "this is something I should know but I don't" look.

"Can I hug you again!?"
"..Okay, fine."

She grabs me and tackles me back onto the clouds. Kaori sits up and pouts, and glares at me.
Like this is somehow my fault.

But it's not!
