It is the Year of Our Lord, 1135.

And the invasion of Ascalon draws ever closer.

But there is still much to prepare for, with trouble on the horizon.

Lord Wilhelm has gathered supporters to his cause. Still though some in the kingdom have not been courted or won over to support the invasion.

Young squire Hugo charts a course along the coast of the Levant, serving his lord brother's cause by assisting in securing trade and material support for the up coming invasion.

Worse still, a conspiracy in the heart of Ramla. A spy has made his way into Wilhelm's court, serving Egyptian masters. Lady Mathilde must root this spy out least her brother's plans be irrevocably compromised.

Who do you play as first?

You are Mathilde of Koblenz.

And you were dressed in boy's breeches that stopped at the knee, a light tunic, and nothing else. Your long black hair plaited behind in a narrow tail that would move this way then that way with every turn of your head. Your toes curled on the dusty ground, small rocks near unseen digging into the delicate skin of your feet.

You looked across to the woman waiting. She was dressed much the same, and was oiling herself, giving her black skin a sheen, slathering down her curly hair so that it lay slick upon her head.

She offered the oil to you. Had you do the same. Your neck, your arms. It was a warm oil that trickled under the collar of your tunic, staining the fabric a yellow-brown and sticking it to your flesh.

This was all in preparation for her teaching you the art of wrestling. Something you had never done much of before.

You looked up at Sabeen. She was tall, firm of limb and athletic. You were no soft lily without any training, but the muscle that played under her oiled skin had a definition not often seen upon a woman.

It made you very uncertain about this whole thing, but it was you that had asked her.

Sabeen slapped her cheeks, then drifted back and forth on the balls of her feet.

"You should be limber," she said, "Ready to move, in any direction. Action and reaction. Distance and measure."

You nodded, and did much as she did, moving on the balls of your feet. Trying to remain light and ready. You kept your limbs a little bent. A straight leg was more easily broken, as was a straight arm, but you did not bunch up. Lessons of swordcraft filtering through.

"Good," Sabeen said, moving her feet nimbly before you. Almost entrancing in the way she near danced this way and that, hands forward.

"Now, defend yourself," and Sabeen moved forward with a sudden lunge.

>>

Raymond was drunk and Wilhelm had been working out.
>>
She comes forward and you push your hands forward to grab her by the shoulders. Your fingers catch soggy fabric, bunching it with a wet sound in your fist. Sabeen looms over you, dark limbs threading through your pale ones, hands grabbing the front of your own shirt as they unbound your own grip.

She moved leg and hip and tried to throw you over it. You stumbled forward, pulling back against her efforts, pushing your hands against her arms, her body.

It was a slight struggle. You saw Sabeen's teeth clench. Her grip shift. You brought your elbow against the inside of her arm, forcing it away, hand slipping free. But it moved to the back of your head, gripping you by the hair.

All your efforts were more a game of keep away, and though you prevented her from throwing you over her hip, instead once her arm was on your shoulder instead, and the other hand gripping you by the front, she threw her greater weight against you, leg finding the back of yours, and pushed you fast to the ground.

She did not slam you down, though you knew she could have and jarred you hard by doing so, but none the less the drop was irresistible.

She had you on the dirt, and soon had her knee planted between your breasts, a fist raised to strike.

"Good," she said, giving you a smile, "Never co-operate with your opponent. It's just a game of learning the best methods of resistance."

She withdrew her knee, gave you her hand. You clasped wrists and she pulled you to your feet. You gave a puff of air, and then took the balls of your feet again, circling Sabeen.

You bounced forward, ready to take the initiative.

She moved, danced away. Not back but to the side, your limbs pushing at air. You turned and tried to catch her again but she merely turned aside. Away, just beyond reach, a glinting smile. It made your chest burn with frustration.

That next move you timed well, to grab her by the forearm and you managed to snare it. Drawing her in so your other hand could find a purchase.

But she rolled into your embrace, that her back was to you, your arm now held above her shoulder. And she bent forward in such a way that you were lifted from the ground, thrown up and then down.

Your back hit the dirt, a cloud of dust exploding out around from you, wind blasted from your lungs. You took a breath of that dust cloud and choked, snorted it out.

Sabeen offered you a hand but you got yourself up. There was a cut upon your shin, a small bit if blood with pebbles lodged in it. It stung hard, but you dusted the dirt and pebbles off. Looked back to Sabeen and slapped the side of your face, lifted your hands again.

The wrestling had drawn some spectators. Young men mostly, but girls as well. Giselle watched wide-eyed with your maids.

You did your best to ignore them. You came back toward the black woman, your posture lower.

You tried for a tackle, and managed to get your arms around her hips, but she used her greater height to close down on top of you, arms circling your waist, pushing you into the dirt until you were pinned. You squirmed under her, a kick of your leg trying to force her off.

When she got off you she did so with a slap to your backside and a throaty laugh. You burned with anger now as she helped you up.

"Keep calm," she said, "Keep your head clear. No matter what your enemy does." Then she flicked your nose as she ducked backward.

She fell into that wrestling stance again, footwork light.

You gave a frustrated yowl and dived forward.

Sabeen dropped before you even touched her, legs flying out as she went down, throwing your own legs apart so that you were taken off your feet and the world dropped out from under you. You flew for all of two seconds before you belly flopped hard upon the earth, arms thrown out to stop it, soon cut with sharp little stones.

You sniffed as you turned over onto your back, arms shaking. Torn skin showed dark blood with dirt mixed through on your forearms, a stinging burn running through them. Your eyes teared up and you sniffed but you didn't openly cry. The blood didn't run more than a little.

It hurt as bad as anything had ever hurt before.

"Oh my baby!" you heard your mother cry but you ignored her wailing and got back up on your feet, torn arms held forth, stinging but ready.

Sabeen eyed you up and down, her own arms up.

She motioned you to step forward.

"Don't charge in," she said as you crossed forearms.

You nodded.

She put her arms on the back of your head and you did the same.

Now she showed you how to move your arms. You did not strike each other, but she drew her arm away and brought her elbow up to touch your chin, the side of your head. You did the same.

"If you get into a grapple and feel over powered, hit them here to try and make space for yourself," she showed you how to bring the elbow and fist against the neck, the temple, the ear and to drive your fist into the sternum.

She took you through a simple arm bar as well. Catching the arm when its straight, applying a bit of pressure, and bringing your opponent to the ground. If you wanted to, even break their arm. She allowed you to do that to her, pull her to the ground, but you knew if she didn't want it to happen it wouldn't.

She showed you a few other basic tricks. The crowd thinned now that you were no longer in full motion, but some still watched.
>>
"Never fail to respect the other fighters desire to hurt you," she said, straightening up, "You've got to put them down, hard and nasty."

You nodded.

Sabeen took you to a bench and had a waiting boy fetch water and a cloth. She washed your bloody arms, drew a tincture from her saddlebag and lathered over the cuts. Then she bound them in wrappings.

"You will learn," she said, "Until you know by instinct how to move."

She patted your cheek. "Get some water, get some food," she said, "We'll do this again tomorrow."

You give her a tired smile, get up off the bench.

Your sister came forward with a large grin. Eyes shinning as she plucked at your bandages. Your mother just looked like she might cry.

"So abominable that woman," your mother said, glaring after Sabeen as she disappeared into the stables.

You could not agree, but bit down on your retort. Your mother did not like back talk.

You stretched out your shoulders, felt a rumble in your stomach. Food would be a good idea.

You take tired steps over to the kitchens.

The plump cook hands you flat bread topped with meat. She gives you a disapproving frown for the sweat-stained boys garb you were wearing. Taking a seat at one of the long tables, you wolfed down your breakfast, followed by a cup of fresh milk. You wipe the milk mustache off on the back of your hand. Sigh pleasantly for the food in your belly.

You didn't eat much, leaving a good half of the food for a hungry kitchen girl to eat instead.

Shaking out your sore hands, you mount the steps up to see your closest friend Viyan.

At her door you hear a fit of girlish giggling. You stop your knuckles before they can rap upon the door. You put your ear close.

"Oh you bitch," it was Rosalie's voice, it came up a pitch, not a word but a sound that prickled your ears.

"Nnn, I love this," you heard your friend say, "So much better than that oafish man. Such a brute. I like your touch much better, and your..." Her voice fades into a fit of giggling and Rosalie's sounds return.

You decide to go for a short walk, face red. After circling the tower a couple of times you came back to see Rosalie coming out of Viyan's chamber, correcting her dress, correcting stray hairs, cheeks glowing. She saw you and frowned.

"What are you dressed for?" she asked, "You look like some foul alley cat."

"I was wrestling with Sabeen," you said.

Rosalie sniffed. "Behavior very unbecoming of a young woman. You should cultivate a more womanly image." She reached out and fixed a stray lock that hung over your face, tucking it behind your ear. "You wouldn't want men to question your womanly virtue."

She left with a long stride.

Viyan stood in the door way in a light chemise, watching her go while cradling a cup of wine. She turned eyes to you.

"I think you look lovely," she said, offering you the door. You walk through.

She offered you a drink. Water. And you took it as a lady despite your unlady-like dress.

"How goes your plotting?" you asked.

Viyan gave you a frustrated smile. "Fun but still fruitless. I think I might have something out of her soon, but she dances around it."

You took a long sip. You had some ideas of your own, but weren't sure about how Viyan would react to them.

She took a seat by the arrow slit window, crossing her long bare olive legs, leaning upon her hand as she gazed out onto Ramla.

"Maybe we need to bring more people into this," you said, "There's only so much the two of us can do."

Viyan gathered up her hair on one shoulder, turned to look at you. "Solomon is too busy training for Wilhelm's battles. Who else can we trust?"

"Uncle Franz," you said immediately, "You can trust him."

You scooted back on the bed so that your feet dangled off the ground, hands on the soft mattress. "I think we can rely on Maggie too," you said.

Viyan just watched. It was hard to know what she was thinking at any given time, but you think she was not enthusiastic about the idea.

"Maybe even Sabeen, I think we can trust her," you put that forward and Viyan openly scoffed.

"I won't trust a Muslim with this, for all we know she's a spy for her father," she said.

That made you frown. Maybe your friend was being a little paranoid.

"You can trust my uncle," you said.

"You have another uncle," Viyan said.

That made you sit up. "They are nothing alike," you said, "How dare you even suggest-"

Viyan put up her hands. "Peace, Matty, I am sorry." She looked back out the window. "I've known Franz a little while now. He's not the worst of men, but he seems content to remain with his widow. Pulling him back into this..." She looked back at you and sighed. "But I guess you are right. We cannot do this alone. Of everyone here he is most trustworthy."

"And Maggie..." you said.

Viyan put up her hand. "I thought about it, but I dislike the way she associates with the Arab physicians. She is oft in their company behind closed doors."

"You are being paranoid," you said, "She's my friend and I trust her. She'd never betray Hugo."

Viyan rocked her head side-to-side. "Mayhap," she said, "But a girl's affection changes very quickly at her age. I would not wish to have her ensnared by our spy."

You threw up your hands. "I thought it was the Arabs that were the problem!" you said, "Now its something else entirely."

She gave a frustrated growl, looked back out the window. You scooted closer to the woman, put a hand to her arm. "You can trust me," you said. Viyan's eyes softened. "If I can vouch for Maggie, you can trust that I know what I'm saying."

She rubbed her wrist. "If," she said. She looked back out the window. "Alright, you can bring in Maggie. But not Sabeen. Not until I know we can trust her."

You give in to that small demand, but plan to find a way to prove Sabeen's trustworthiness.

> go and fetch Maggie and Franz

>>
>>41554539
I figure he could look out the window to see anything suspicions or go for late night walks. basically inform him to keep an eye out for us. With attention for people coming and going at unusual hours and "strange" people that do not fit in here..... His main value can be to observe things and not be notice/dismissed in his inconspicuous out of the way house. were as spys would likely avoid guard patrols and places with lookouts, I doubt they would meet at the walls of ramala, more liekly on the outskirts of town.

>>41554567
Interesting. Did not know that about the Egypt shia thing. We would have to ask her about her feelings about sunni shia first.I'm not saying we can never trust her. but to come up out of the blue after she has landed in ramla on poor terms with her father.
We'd be putting alot on her plate right now, I would rather work up to Sabeen if we want her into this spy ring.

Do you want to go shopping?

> go and fetch Maggie and Franz
Think about it over a day after shopping before talking to them both. For Franz, go with father to have a chat with him get a feel for his mood and mindset, see if he still wants to be useful in his age or just content to live out his days. And if we decide to bring Franz in we leave first with father, then come back alone later to speak to him more privately.

Chiri brings up a good point with maggie tho, Hugo is chasing Sabeen and Maggie has eyes on Hugo. If she gets heartbroken she might lash out irrationally or do something out of emotion. She probably could use some work and refinement before becoming a spy, but we can still use her for snooping around.

"So," you said, "Do you have any suspects?"

Viyan turned a strand of hair around her finger. "It's someone that has access to the castle grounds," she said, "So perhaps a servant or one of the men-at-arms. I am only certain of who it isn't right now."

You kicked up your heels, thinking back to the conversation you had overheard.

"He called her a Sappho," you said, "What does that mean?"

Viyan smiled. "Sappho was a Greek poetess, who favoured the company of other women," she said.

"Does that mean our man is Greek?" you asked.

"Perhaps," she replied, "Or at least is educated. It's something to go on."

"He's also a pig," you said, "He couldn't wait to have her undress and..." You weren't sure what she had done but the implication made you feel a tad ill.

"What man doesn't lust for beautiful women?" Viyan said, "Only those that lust for beautiful men."

You'd heard there were men that engaged in such foul behavior, but it still made you blush to hear someone speak so openly about it.

"So we know they have access to the castle, are educated and possibly Greek, and we know they desire beautiful women," you said, "Surely that narrows it down some what."

"A little maybe," she replied, "If I knew I could move more boldly."

You sighed. This was starting to move in circles.

Although it did occur to you to start being bolder in your own investigations.

>Now you're either trolling or playing the little girl too hard

I'm not fear mongering I'm stated what I think could likely happen in quest if we mess up something like this when our brother is away. And I brought up why I think its a bad idea to assume something about Sabeen and to just go in and drop this on her seemingly out of the blue when she probably has some personal things on her mind to think about. I'm trying to see this from both the character's pov and our pov.
>>
You think of all the people Xenophanes fits it the best. At least, most obvious. You hadn't spent much time with the Reeve outside of court, and had not recognized the voice as belonging to him, but still it was worth checking. Before that though you had to get your little helpers on board.

Being in the castle, you excuse yourself from Viyan's room and return to your own to change into more suitable, womanly clothing. You wash off the muck of the day before slipping into a blue dress belted at the waist by a slim silver link chain. A pair of soft shoes and your hair brushed out and you went to find Margaret Ui Harra.

The girl was as she often was outside your company, embroiled with the Arab Mohmed. The two were clattering back and forth in that heathen tongue, the tall young man kicking along next to her. He wore a thin black beard and seemed wholly a scrawny fellow, but he had bright, intelligent eyes.

When he saw you approach he bowed and managed in some broken latin - "Good day Misteress Mah-til-da. It is a very lovely day."

"Good day Mohmed, it really is," you replied. You looked to Maggie, offering her your hand. "If you might give the two of us some privacy." He gave a slight bow, and watched the two of you depart with a funny little smile.

You took Maggie to an empty chamber. She wore a grin and her hair loose and curling around her shoulders. "What's the word, my lady?" she asked, hand on her hip.

"I thought you might be able to help me," you said, "But its a secret thing. A very dangerous thing."

Maggie's grin slipped and she inched forward. "I'm one for a bit of trouble," she said, "Whatever it is, you can count on me."
>>
>>41555404

"We have a spy," you said, and told her some of what you knew. Maggie listened carefully, nodding to every word. When you mentioned you wished to investigate Xenophanes she nodded then too.

"Can't hurt," she said, "And if it ain't him it might get us closer to the real spy."

"If the spy catches you, I fear what he will do," you said, taking her hand, "Promise me you will be very careful."

She squeezed your hand, gave you that ready grin of hers. "I'll be careful, never you fear that."

You kissed the other girl on the cheek. Bless her heart for a true friend.

From there you went to town, to find Franz.

Along the way you came across a pair of men arguing loudly. A trader of little trinkets come to town, Frankish in appearance, had a local by the scruff, shouting in his face about counter-fit coins. Some boys were running to get Tancred as others were starting to swarm around the fight.

You step in to the scuffle. "Sirs!" you say, "Gentlemen!" you shout.

The Frankish merchant turned an ugly eye on you just as he was winding back his fist to throw a punch. The local is glaring at him, but legs shaking enough you can see he was relieved by your intervention.

"Who the hell are you?" he said, releasing his customer to loom over you, "Trying to help these greedy pests steal from me?" he held up a coin, "This coin is half lead. Cheats, nothing but cheats and liars in Ramla."

"I," you put a hand to your breast, "Am Mathilde, and this is my brother's domain. Be careful in your words lest I take personal offense."

The brows you raised to him had that fist of his lowered, but he still chewed on his lip like he wished to curse you.

Guards came up, with them Tancred. The man grinned through his moustache and you felt a little thrill run through you. His large, calloused hand fell on your shoulder and you took a sharp breath as he chuckled.

"It seems you've already met the Lioness," he said, "I hope you did nothing to earn her wrath Vincent."

The merchant looked to your constable and a smile lit his face. "Tancred you war dog," and he threw his arms around the constable's shoulder.

"An old friend," he explained, "A Venetian trader who has worked out of Jaffa. Up and down the Mediterranean."

"Just back from Alexandria," he said, "Thought I'd visit the Holy City and make some money on the way." He looked to the coin in hand and snarled at it. Then he looked back at his friend, holding the coin up in his fist. "You've got bad coins floating through your town. I want the man that gave me this scourged!"

The talk of scourging near set the so-called culprit to flight. Certainly it brought an unhappy glower to Tancred's face.

"I expect this to be dealt with carefully," was all the instruction you gave. He nodded, hand to his sword hilt and blowing out a frustrated breath. You left him with the bickering Vincent and the cowering peasant, and continued on to Franz's lodging.

A knock on the door brought a brown Greek boy. He looked at you with a frown. Then he looked over his shoulder. Then back to you. He was rather good looking, it caught your breath a little. He had a sheen of sweat on his forehead.

"Can I help you?" he asked, leaning on the door frame.

"Peter!" a woman called to the boy, grabbed him and pulled him back, "Master Achilles needs you. Go, boy, go." A buxom woman, his mother, she pushed the boy out the door and past you. He had an exasperated look on his face as he stumbled past.

The woman took his place in the doorway, glaring after her boy. She threw up a hand at her son when he stopped to glare back at her, so that he kept walking.

"Lazy boy, just like his father," she said. Then she turned her attention to you. Her head cocked to the side. "You aren't one of his girlfriends," she said, "Don't even think about taking up with my boy. He is a fool."

You hadn't planned too. "Good woman, I am looking for Franz," you said with a respectful half-bow.

Her lips softened and her eyes grew wide. "Oh yes," she said, "Please come in. Franz is still resting." She let you into their home, a round eating area, and disappeared back behind a bead curtain.

Soon enough she came with Franz grumbling in half dress, smoothing the hair that stood from the side of his head. When he saw you though the grumbles stopped and he gave a happy smile.

"Brat," he said.

"Horse face," you said.

And then he took you under his arm, rubbing your head until it brought a happy laugh out of you. You squirmed your way free, panting, and the old man looked like he might grab you again, but his woman stopped him.
>>
"Please, let our guest sit, I'll get some food and drink," she said, and then kissed Franz n his bald pate. The happy smile he gave his widow made you giggle with a slight blush. You took a seat next to him.

"You've grown," he said, taking up a cup of beer, "Damn my eyes but I'll have to get my bow and skinning knife, to keep the young bucks away."

You giggled. "Every man says that, and I wonder how many of them I should be worried about?" you said, teasing your uncle. It just made the old Jew roll his eyes.

His widow came and put an arm across his chest. "I'll be out," she said, "Just need to pick up some thread." He squeezed her hand and they shared a kiss before she departed.

She left to share a plate of fruit, and you took a slice of apple.

"What is your visit about, snot nose?" he asked, "You've not come to call all this time."

You felt a light squeeze on your heart as you remembered the purpose of this visit.

Base Intrigue = 5
Education: Elusive Shadow = +9
Genetic Trait: Quick = +3
Lifestyle Trait: Master Seductress = +2
Virtuous Trait: Diligent = +1
Virtuous Trait: Patient = +1
Sinful Trait: Lustful = +1

You thought about soliciting your uncle's help right away, but the way he was smiling made you pause.

"Why, I just wished for your dear company," you said, taking his hand in yours.

That actually made his eyes narrow. "Since when were you so sweet natured?" he asked.

"Can't I be sweet for my favourite uncle?" you asked back, batting your lashes with a slight pout.

He growled a little but had to hide his grin behind his hand. "You'll be a real monster with some years on you," he said. He took your hand and pushed up your sleeve to show your bandages. "If you don't lose your wits playing fool games with Saracens and the like. We've heard about you playing at men's sports even down here. Wrestling with that horse woman and getting drummed around the yard by your brother."

Excuse him, but you recalled doing some of the drumming yourself.

"Do you think it unseemly?" you asked, a note of injury creeping into your voice.

He gave an uncomfortable look, like a sad frown. "It's not what I think," he said, "But other men think your tastes are a bit...unnatural. Playing the man. Too much of that can lead to a bonfire with you for tinder."

That had you give a little gasp. You knew the unnatural, the sodomites and the ones who played at different genders, were meant to be burned at the stake if they did not repent. You did not think your action had flirted with such behaviour. You'd never witnessed such a thing, but you recalled a pair of sodomites being hanged not far from Trier before your departure for the Holy Land.
>>
"I do not think brother is the sort to burn a man alive," you said.

"Maybe," Franz said, "But best not put him in an uncomfortable position."

He got up to pour himself another beer. Poured you one too while he was there. He set it down next to you.

"How's your mother?" he asked with such concern it made you frown.

"Trying to tame Giselle," you replied. A wasted effort. He smiled for it though. You drank a little of the beer. You were more one for wine.

"Hermann's been around," Franz said,, stretching out an arm, "It's good to see the old wine-sack again. You wouldn't know it to look at him, but he was a handsome man in his youth. Very strong." You wouldn't believe it. "He has been lost as of late. For a while I think. Ever since Gretchen died."

You did not know much about how your father, Franz and Uncle Hermann had come to be as close as brothers together. It involved a siege back when they were boys. Franz had pulled your father from a burning siege tower. That's as much as was ever said, and only to justify why he might let a Jew into his home, Christened or not.

You didn't particularly want to hear about Hermann no matter the reason.

You decide that Tancred knows his business.
"Back when we were young men we worked for the archbishop of the day," he said, "Your father on his destrier, Hermann on foot with his long-axe, and me with a bow. Wasn't just us either. There were other men in those days, and women too. Hard-Head, Bert, Georges the Swabian. Otis and Lucinda. Good people. All dead now." He drank. Eyes shimmering with nostalgia. "The archbishop had us do all kinds of mischief. I remember one time there was this lover, some young Spanish buck, messing around with the archbishop's favourite girl. We gave him a scare. Dragged him out into the woods with horns stuck to his head, chased him like he was deer. Lucky for him your dad let him go, a lesson well learned. If it had been up to the archbishop he'd have lost his balls."

He drank some more.

"Your pa and me didn't like each other at first," he said, "But that changed after our first real battle. You shed blood beside a man, it changes you. He dragged me out of the path of a stone would have splattered my head all over the courtyard. Took an arrow for me too. Didn't even think, just did it. That's how your old man was. A real bastard, but in the thick of it the finest man you'd ever want next to you."

He finished his cup. You finished yours.

"Not to say he was the greatest fighter, that's why we had Hermann, but your dad had a way of keeping us all together. Had an eye for the movement of battle. If he'd had a better start in life he could have been a more important man. Leading armies. Instead of just a grubby team or murder-men for the arch-bishop. I tell you though, it never stopped him from fucking a princess or two." Franz laughed, and then remembered that you were a tender girl of thirteen and cursed himself for a fool.

"Forgive an old man his crude stories," he said, taking your empty cup, "Those days of raising hell are long gone."

He filled both with water.

You took the offered water and drank, washing some of the bitterness out of your mouth.

Franz resumed his seat.

"It's good of you to come visit," he said, "I enjoy my life but it drags a little, and they're all so damn foreign. Good to have a German around."

You raise a cup to that.

Once you were done he bid you a good afternoon. A short hug with a hearty slap on your back. A promise to visit again soon but you both were sure that promise might not be kept. It was good to see your uncle, and left you in higher spirits on your departure.

As you left you passed the boy Paul, who carried a strange tube over his shoulder. Attached to it was a handle. You did not know what such a contraption should be for. When he saw you he made a very obvious bow, sarcastic even. You swished your skirts as you went along, head high in disdain.

"So good to see you again princess," he called after you, "So gracious of you to stop by."

You should have a man come around to flog the peasant for his impudence.

In the town square the peasant with the bad coins was in the stocks. He had not been beaten badly, but had a large purple bruise over one eye. He groaned as you went up the road to the keep.

Once you were within the walls you gave a deep breath.

The Merchant from Venice, Vincent, was in the walls still in conversation with Tancred. He was not a bad looking man, tall and built like a tree, with long hair in ringlets and clothes of velvet and furs, every finger covered in a ring. He was selling Tancred a brooch.

"For your wife, or some sweet heart," he said with a wink. It was small and silver.

"I've a daughter might like it," Tancred said. He saw you approach. "Lady Mathilde, what say you of this brooch?" He had Vincent show it to you. It was small, but the craft work was exquisite.

"It's a pretty thing," you say, "May I?" You put out your hand. Vincent lets you take it, and you hold it against your breast, and then against your hair as if it were a pin. "How does it look?" you asked Tancred, batting your eyes, "Suitable for your wife? Or would it look better on me?"

"Hum," Tancred went a little red in the cheeks, "It suits you well Lady Mathilde."

"Very fine, very fine," Vincent said, "A beautiful girl should have beautiful things. If Tancred will not spoil his wife with a gift or two, mayhap you would be interested in buying it." He shot his friend a smug look.

"How long have you been with us Master Vincent?" you asked, handing the brooch back.

"I made Ramla last night," he said, "Fighting a devil of a wind. I'd hoped to sell to Lord Wilhelm but he is absent. They say he favours the finer things in life." Your brother certainly was a man of good taste. Vincent also had rings to sell, including the ones he wore. You suspected he would sell just about anything for the right price, including the fur trimmed cloak on his back.

His eye moved from you to the womenfolk that passed and you saw a different kind of smile on his face. For your Jewess handmaidens, for Sabeen in maile, even pregnant Etain who walked with Solomon. The man seemed a lecher.

"Ramla is full of fine things," he said, "But none finer than yourself, Lady Mathilde."

That got a growl out of Tancred. "No flirting," he said, grabbing the man by the scruff, "It's your balls if you do."

He held up his hands with laughter for his friend.

"I'll buy the brooch," Tancred said, "But you get to camp outside the walls tonight."
>>
They exchanged coins. Then Tancred slipped the brooch to you. "My wife isn't one for such things," he said, "And doesn't like me spending money any how. Wear it and remember, if a man gives you trouble I'll sort him out." He winked as he walked away with his old friend.

You went red as you clutched the brooch in your hands. A generous gift. You couldn't help but smile.

Then you looked back to your brother's tower, and remembered the spy.

"Any news on our friend?" you asked as she shifted a pepper pot. Maggie had been looking into Xenophanes as a possible suspect.

She bit her lip. "Maybe," she said.

That had you leaning forward. "I never seen him do much but make the usual rounds, but he keeps notes fairly often. Just scrawled out on a bit of script when he thinks he's alone, then tucks it up his sleeve. Funny little habit. Don't know if it means anything."

She took down a bag of flour. "I hear he wants to meet with the merchant that showed up yesterday. Interested in buying something for his mother. I'll try and get a listen in on that."

Probably a good idea.

You bid Maggie good luck with her plans and exit the pantry.

Go talk to the guys in charge of the gate.
How many doors/gates does Ramla have? We should speak to the gatemaster and see if he knows anything. While we are at it, we should see about having more control over our entry and exit points.
>>
You decide to get a bit more proactive in your investigation. You make your way around to the barracks. Rachel is flirting with a young soldier leaning on a spear. She's a fairly average girl, but not without charm. So long as it remained just flirtation you saw no problem with her teasing a boy or two.

One of the men who kept the gate watch was preparing for his afternoon shift. The man stifled a yawn.

"Can I help you my lady?" he asked, pulling on his maile.

You asked him about the gates, what traffic was like and what people had come and gone in the small hours, late night and very early morning.

"Well as to gates we've got two," he said, "The main gate, that is the big one out the front, and a side gate on the east wall. We get all sorts coming and going. Servants finishing for the night or coming in early to bake the morning bread. No strangers of course. Not without any kind of explanation. If a stranger turns up we check with Lady Rosalie first and she let's them in."

"Strangers?" you asked.

The man-at-arms shrugged. "Just villagers mostly, a couple of travelers from Jaffa or Jerusalem come off the road. She's a generous host Lady Rosalie, giving pilgrims shelter. Reflects well on m'lord."

"Did any arrive last night?" you asked.

He shrugged. "No, not as far as I'm aware." He could to his companions with that question, but none said as they could remember.

"And what of Lady Rosalie herself," you asked, "Does she ever use the gates?"

"The courtyard some times," he said, "Truth is a couple lads have seen her letting birds go. Not that we question our betters." This you knew already. "Some times she kips down to the town though, cloaked up like we ain't supposed to know its her. Gave me a coin once to keep my mouth shut." He produced the coin. Handed it to you. "But the bloody thing is half-lead. That won't buy anything, least of all a shush from me. Not that, I uh, am the sort to take coin that is." He gave a nervous cough.
>>
You slip the coin into your purse, next to the silver brooch.

"My thanks," you said.

"Yer welcome, m'lady," he said, pulling on his helmet and shooting you a gap toothed smile. As you walked away you heard him remark to one of his friends - 'wouldn't mind giving that bum a pinch' to hearty chuckles. You thought about giving the crude man more than a pinch, but instead drew on your virtue and walked away.

Next you checked the ledgers, to see who was officially being paid what. The books it seemed were kept by the priest, Desmond, having obtained the duty to releave the burden of administration from Rosalie.

"And I thought you might want to discuss your soul," he sighed, pulling out the official documents, "When you're done here I'd be happy to take your confession. A young woman such as yourself must be assailed upon by the evils of the world."

You nod without really listening, eyes on the ink scrawl in front of you.

You work your way through the numbers. A coin here, a coin there. Your brother was putting money out in seven different directions on wages and expenses. You checked your lists of suspects. There was nothing wrong with any of heir wages, though you thought it a little low in the case of Solomon. He was worth easily twenty times the three pfennings he was being paid.

You had no idea how your brother had convinced him it was a living wage, and Solomon wasn't a moron.

You did not see any major discrepancies, and closed the ledger with a sigh.

"Anything I can do to help?" Desmond asked, replacing the scrolls on the wall.

Ask him some "curiosity questions" like why he has the ledger in detail, "so father, it was quite kind of you to take this responsibility off of Rosalie"... just find out if there were any other circumstances that we are not aware of, on how this happened... perhaps Rosalie said something of interest to Desmond.

"I suppose you can help me father," you said, "I am in need of some guidance."

"Of course," he took the chair across from you, hands held before him, a warm smile upon his face. "How can I help you my daughter?" he asked.

You sighed a very girlish sigh. "I fear for the future," you said, "For my brothers, who you know are martially spirited. For all the brave young men in arms, waging war against the Saracen. And for myself, and when I must wed."

Desmond nodded. "All natural things to fear," he said, "I could tell you to trust in God, and you should, but God's plan is not our plan. If he calls someone to him, there is no resisting it. So on that measure, there is little comfort I can provide." He paused, thought on his next words. "However, you must trust people to be doing their very best. That your brothers will protect one another, that when they go to war they will protect one another. There are things beyond our control. No one is the master of their own destiny. Only Christ. We simply work with the tools we have."

He pursed his lips.

"On the matter of your eventual wedding, you must only trust that your father and brother have your interests at heart. It is ever such for a girl to become like a head of cattle to be bartered over or used for some advantage. I do not think your lord brother is the type to treat you so callously. He will find you a suitable, lordly man."

You smile for the priest. He had such a hopeful outlook on the world. "You've done a service to us Father," you said, "Caring for the gentlefolk of Ramla, helping Rosalie with her administration. You surely do not have to do that."

Desmond chuckled. "They say I put the clerk in clergy, always have. Numbers have long been a source of pleasure for me, the sorting of them, the puzzles they provide. A game of logic. Do not think I am unselfish in taking on such tasks."
>>
He smoothed out the sleeve of his heavy brown robe. "Tending to such a diverse flock has been interesting. The Muslims, well, old Ibrahim resists and young Mohmed hasn't the language to debate, but Sabeen and I have had an interesting conversation or two," he said, "I'm happy to say there's to be a baptism soon. Shlomo has accepted Christ. If you'd be kind enough to witness it, it will be held early on the next Sabbath."

>>
"Of course I'd be delighted!" you say, and you meant it. That a Jew had found his way to accepting Christ was a wonderful occasion to celebrate. And to see such sincere joy made Desmond smile as well.

"Was there anything else you needed?" he asked.

You think for a second and pull out the half-lead half-silver piece, hand it to him. "Do you know anything about false coins being brought into Ramla?" you asked.

His eyes widened and he nodded. "Yes, one found its way into the collection tray last mass." He rolled it over his hand, then looked up at you. "I'd be very careful," he said, "The punishment for forgery is quite severe, and whoever is doing this will go to great measure to avoid being caught."

"If the counterfeitter were to confess to you of his crime," you said, "Would you tell someone."

He placed the coin down, looked you in the eye. "I'm sorry my child, but no," he said, "I would never break such a sacred covenant."

You took the coin and slipped it back into your purse. "Have a good day father," you said with a curtsy.

"God be with you," he said as you walked away.

Off to catch a spy.

+ 2 War, +2 Int, +2 lead

Sorry we didn't cover as much ground as I'd hoped. Those system hiccups really dragged out the quest. Not sure when the next session will be. Should know by Sunday.

I assume he will take part in the whole Poiters/Patriach business.

It's not NTR anon, its not like Hugo owns her or anything. And he made it perfectly clear what he wants and it's probablky the same thing.

Maggie appeared when we were in Jerusalem. She helped out Hugo and tried to get in his pants with Etain.

But Hugo stood firm in the onslaught of those Irish Succubusses

>>41560159

I think Hugo's relationship with Sabeen will develop more when he gets back and that may steer Maggie away, nobody likes beeing the third weel

>>
>>41560209
Honestly my money is on the last bit. Grr. We should had sided with him and questioned him about it. It wasnt just chance that a large amount of fake coin appeared when the spy arrived.
>>
>>41560142
He might do.

>>41560162
I think I've shared the rumours before and nothing much has changed. Mathilde is starting to get a reputation as a tomboy.

No one pays Chihirizahd much mind. They dismiss her as a whore/bed companion of Lord Wilhelm. A lot of people are terrified of Solomon, rightly so, but he's also something of an older brother figure to many of the young men and boys in the town. If Solomon is the big brother, Tancred is considered their second father. His disappointment is just as bad to their moral as Solomon's anger.

A lot of people think Wilhelm's court is pretty strange in general.

>>41560133
Same as any other coin. The trick is in the weight.
>>
>>41560218
>No one pays Chihirizahd much mind. They dismiss her as a whore/bed companion of Lord Wilhelm

Guess Chiri has to spread a rumor that she was infact a eastern princess that Wilhelm kidnapped!

Also we need to make Mathilde more lady like or she might be hanged for upsetting the natural balance.
>>
>>41560218
Nothing more on Hugo? guess we haven't spent much time amassing his Rep.

>A lot of people think Wilhelm's court is pretty strange in general.

we Estoric thinking soon
>>
>>41560239
>Also we need to make Mathilde more lady like or she might be hanged for upsetting the natural balance.
Franz was being a bit of a fear monger there. To be sure it can get you into trouble, but Matty is a far way off that.
>>
>>41560210

The suffering at Ascalon will be huge for Hugo regardless, he will not cope well if Wil's tropps start raping and all that jazz, he already killed a knight over it and I'm certain he would do it again.
If his relationship with SAbeen is already established when we get there there's potential for even more suffering if her father happens to be on the other side.
>>
>>41560253
Can you start the next thread by having Mathilde inform Viyan about everything she found out in this thread ?

Also what is Wilhelm doing. Travelling back or is this taking place at the same time during his stay in Jerusalem ?
>>
>>41560253
can we be more covert of not with our Activities concerning anything?

>>41560260
yeah more like Hugo & Sabeen don't establish that relationship until we've broken Ascalon over our knee
>>
>>41560287
>yeah more like Hugo & Sabeen don't establish that relationship until we've broken Ascalon over our knee

I think is where it will finalize actually. Heck it sounds like Desmond is on his way to converting her or she just want to know more.
>>
>>41560287

I would agree with you, but I don't think we can plan that sort of things, we will have to see and let things flow naturally.
>>
>>41560328
Wilhelm will be a cockblocking jerk if they try to marry since Sabeen is not important enough.
>>
>>41560218
What kind of security does Ramla have, like what kind of patrols do Solomon and Tancred do?

Do they go out beyond the land we own on patrol or only when carrying out raids and eradication of bandits and saracen?

How are our logistics and supplies for the large influx of troops we are expecting looking?

Do we have to arm and armour any of the arriving men from the bishop?

How many people have arrived to join our banner since we sent a open latter invitation to everyone?
>>
>>41560319
nah more like he's hopeful about it, I don't see her converting just yet

Hugo is going to through the power of the D, a power Wilhelm could only dream of having

>>
>>41560338

Actually it would be really nice to see Hugo doing some decisions by himself instead of defering to Wil. It's going to be nice scene when they have to talk about it
>>
>>41560347
>What kind of security does Ramla have, like what kind of patrols do Solomon and Tancred do?
Pretty diligent patrolling of the lands immediately around Ramla, including roads and farm land. They don't go too far out because they don't have the numbers for that kind of projection.

>Do they go out beyond the land we own on patrol or only when carrying out raids and eradication of bandits and saracen?

Only when dealing with hostiles like bandits and enemy raiding numbers.

>How are our logistics and supplies for the large influx of troops we are expecting looking?

Those won't be coming to Ramla. The army will gather at Jaffa.

>Do we have to arm and armour any of the arriving men from the bishop?

No.

>How many people have arrived to join our banner since we sent a open latter invitation to everyone?

So far? None, but expect arrivals soon.
>>
>>41560286
>Also what is Wilhelm doing. Travelling back or is this taking place at the same time during his stay in Jerusalem ?
Same time as his visit. I realized this stuff was too important to happen off screen.
>>
>>41560383
I assume those people who are arriving bring their own.
>>
>>41560396
Most will.

You can easily send away those that don't.
>>
>>41560411

Well troops die quickly. We should be able to get some battlefield salvage to arm the leftovers rapidly.
>>
>>41560411
or feed them in return for fighting for us?
>>
What are the names of the main three horses?
>>
>>41560470
Important, Irrelevant and Spot
>>
>>41560383
So how will we be supplying our forces in theater?

I am really worried about being able to keep the army well supplied, I assume baggage trains pulled by pack animals, mostly horses since we specialize in that trade, and a few carts and wagons?
I just to make sure we have not only enough but some extra supplies, with the ability to gather some more to sustain ourselves easier.
>>
So how many of the men and boys are currently dreaming of "wrestling" with Mathilde?
>>
Fuckin' misarchivist added "Wilhelm" and "Charisma" to the tags.
>>
>>41560485
Also by ship most likely.
>>
>>41560470
Groucho, Chico and Harpo.

There's a fourth and fifth horse, but no one cares about them.

>>41560487
Most of the male population of Ramla.

I say most because some are gay or family.
>>
>>41560485
can we not bog down the quest in logistics? I don't want to repeat what happened with Nazi's in fantasyland

>>41560487
all of them In mathilde's dreams
>>
>>41560426
I find that will be hard to maintain, once we train them up they might get poached by other lords or become mercenaries since they will constantly be broke, at the very least pay them 1 pfennigs every 2 months.
>>
>>41560485
By ship and by the overland road from Jaffa.
>>
>>41560508
that works I suppose
>>
>>41560498
But the only family we have there is our "Uncle" Hermann
>>
>>41560523
Franz is family.
>>
>>41560530
Also Solomon has no sexual interest in Mathilde and thinks of her as family as well.
>>
>>41560501
So long as we don't end up with problems regarding our ability to sustain our army. I'm mostly asking to get reassurances that we won't be punished later for "not taking other factors into consideration".

>Nazi's in fantasyland
wut? There was a nazi quest?
>>
>>41560498
Naughty, naughty Tancred
>>
Seriously, whoever's doing the archives: Wilhelm didn't do shit this thread, stop tagging him on the threads when he doesn't even appear. Why do we even list the protagonists' names if not to separate which threads they had the most involvement with and impact on.
>>
>>41560551
Hell, thread 32 got a more accurate archive than this one.
>>
>>41560547

>>
>>41560530
I am willing to bet even Rosalie would want to hate fuck her.
>>
>>41560551
I do most of the archiving myself except for the first three and the obvious misarchivals. I have just copy-pasted the same tags the first guy put up. I only changed it for the switch from In Nomine Patris to Deus Vult.

If its that annoying I'll cut them down, but I'm lazy so the tags are saved to my computer so just continually putting in a C then pressing down and enter has been easier.

>>
>>41560598
That reminds me, is she doing anything besides being preggers? She was one of Mathilde's friends, right? Not that I'm looking to enlist her help, just confused as to whether she can still socialize despite her marriage.
>>
>>41560575
I'm surprised it wasn't /pol/.

Well I ask these things since its not ever mention or seemingly taken into consideration.
I bring this up due to the amount of supplies and inventory/money management we needed to take into consideration in earlier threads, and there was no mention of any of this being made easier or simpler for us so I don't want to assume.

I guess part of this is from experiences with starcraft ghost quest. I don't want to get screwed over by skipping over something that we do or do not know if it is a game mechanic in play.
>>
>>41560665
Sabeen is eighteen. That's fine by him.

Ioveta is a border-line example.

Etain was the consequence of a very boring day in Ramla.

>>41560676
She's mostly trying to make sure she doesn't miscarry. She still hangs out with everyone from time to time, I just haven't included her much.
>>
>>41560676
we may find out about it when Wilhelm/Hugo get back or Mathilde decides to inquire

>>41560702
when are we going to get that 500 from the horsetrading?

also would it be recommended that we send Mathilde off to Jerusalem while at war?
>>
>>41560592
Can we get a updated pastebin? I think our prisoner we gave to our lord Count Hugh?

Also I i recall you not really wanting to complicate things with salary and keeping track of them but when Wilhelm gets back can we just say Solomon is getting more than just 2 or 3 pfennigs a month? It drives me nuts thinking hes almost living in squalor conditions after all hes done for us his loyalty for us for really crap pay that was only suppose to be temporary.
>>
>>41560856
>Can we get a updated pastebin? I think our prisoner we gave to our lord Count Hugh?

Wrong prisoner. The raider is already given up and is no longer in the pastbin. The one we have now is the caliph's cousin who we are going to use when we sue for peace.

Also Solomon doesnt mind his pay, he lives in the castle and eats there aswell. All he has to do is ask for a pay raise
>>
>>41560856
we gave a muslim knight from Ascalon to Hugh not the cousin of the Caliph
>>
>>41560856
The prisoner given to Hugh wasn't the Caliph's cousin. It was Abu Bakr, the man from Ascalon.

Solomon isn't doing badly, I mostly added that as a joke.

>>41560788
Soon and it wouldn't be hugely necessary to send Mathilde to Jerusalem.
>>
>>41560894
Still think we should send Mathilde and if Giselle is still with us to Jerusalem. Mostly because i want Giselle and Baldwin to become friends and for Mathilde to get taught a few things by Melisende.
