When planet Coral deteriorated beyond any hope of terraformation, the Pioneer project was put in place to evacuate the families of the wealthiest, most influential, and most intelligent in an attempt to find a new homeworld. Ragol, the most suitable system found, is a yellow star with an inner asteroid belt, a habitable planet (called Ragol), an ice planet, and a dark matter belt.

Pioneer I, the first ship of its kind, was sent to Ragol to begin colonizing.

Pioneer II arrived seven years later. Upon orbit above the Central Dome of the colony, Pioneer II opened up channels to receive, but was interrupted by an explosion from just outside the Central Dome. The explosion shook the entire planet. All communcation was cut off. Strangely enough, infrastructure damage seemed to be nonexistent.

You are Pheonixia, a female newman and a Hunter's Guild certified Force. You have gained clout with Principal Tyrell after a lucky acquisition of “Red Ring” Rico Tyrell's log. Tyrell, the autocratic leader of Pioneer 2 and Rico's father, has put you on an off-the-books search and rescue mission for Rico.

You have fought your way through the forests of Ragol, slayed a dragon, reclaimed Pioneer I's Central Dome, and discovered the long dead Palman civilization through an ancient artifact, the Elsydeon. With a shard of the once great sword, you are given visions of heroes of the past. The ghosts of Elsydeon warn of Mother Brain, a system of climate control AI responsible for turning the barren Motavia (Ragol) into a green planet filled with often hostile life.

Boarding an ancient satellite in orbit around Ragol revealed two functioning androids. They detail a threat to the Ragol system. “Profound Darkness” is due for another millenial disaster, and you have already discovered its "Dark Energy Wave" emitting from the Central Dome.
>>
Wren, the android accompanying you from the climate satellite Zelan to Pioneer II, presented his findings on the Pioneer I explosion. The images revealed a "Dark Force" at the epicenter of the mysterious explosion.

You were dismissed by Tyrell, and took the opportunity to explore and gather data from the ancient climate satellite, Kuran, in orbit around Ragol II (Dezolis in the ancient language.) You return to find the principal's office is not taking visitors, not even you. A visit to Zelan reveals that the military has taken over operations.

WORKS, the military organization who has taken over Zelan, captures and interrogates you. Left in a makeshift prison cell, you draw upon the wisdom of the Elsydeon. Newly inspired, you teach yourself the gizonde technique, using it to great effect against your captors. You discover the deactivated Wren and Demi. You manage to reactivate Demi before the station's automated defense system corners and shoots you.

After a brief disorienting vision, you are awakened by Demi. The two of you work together to reactivate Wren, who wipes out the rest of the soldiers. You reunite with your friends at the hospital on Pioneer II. Your next destination: Ragol II.

Ragol II proved to be a harsh location. Combat with the native life separated your group. A Dezolian rescued you from the cold and escorted you to Meese for room and board, where you met an Esper. The Esper escorted west to the mountain ranges near where you first arrived.

“This is the owl that took my friend!”

“I see...Hewn!”

Winds gust around the bird, bringing flames with it. The owl is terrified. Layla beings tying a rope around herself and you.

“What are you doing?”

“Snow Owls bring their...findings...to their nest.” Layla throws a lasso around the owl's neck. “We must have attracted its attention while it was looking for food. It will bring us to wherever it took your friend!”

“So we're going to ride it back to where it came from?”

She gives you a mischievous grin. “That's the plan.”

Before you have a chance to object, she casts another wind spell to kill the flames. The Owl flies away. The rope grows taught and the two of you are lifted off the ground with a jerk.

“For the record, this is fucking insane!”

The owl takes you northeast, over forests and a few towns. The owl circles over a mountain where you spot a small nest. You see someone lying in the nest, but you can't tell who it is from here.

“There's someone down there!” you shout to Layla.

“Well, now we just have to find a way down!”

“I apologize in advance.”

“Layla looks at you with some concern. “What?”

You take out your wand and hold it to the skies. A bolt of lightning strikes the owl, and consequentially, the two of you. The bolt isn't strong enough to do any permanent damage, but you and Layla convulse a bit before the bolt dissipates.

The owl falls unconscious and quickly loses altitude. It dives head first into a tree, snapping its neck, and sending you into a mess of branches. You suffer cuts and scrapes before crashing into the snow.

It takes a minute to regain your strength and pull yourself out of the snow. You find Layla waiting for you. “You must be insane!”

“I said sorry!”

“We could have been killed.”

“I dialed it back. That electric strike was not strong enough to do anything severe.”

“Tell that to him!” Layla points to the owl laying at the base of a tree. It's head is bent in an unnatural fashion. The neck must have snapped on impact.

“...sorry.”

“Let's go find your friend.”

The two of you walk toward the nest you saw, where you find Maiyawynn with a snapped wrist and likely hypothermia. She is not responsive.

“You go start a fire. I'll try to heal her as best as I can.”

Layla nods in agreement. You pick Maiyawynn up and set her on the rock next to the nest.

A strategically placed flaeli spell knocks a small tree onto the nest, where it is used as kindling to light the fire.

The heat from the fire is sweltering. Maiyawynn is a pale blue, but her skin is warming up.

You use a nearby stick and a shred of cloth from your coat to set the bone.

You point your wand at Maiya's wrist. “Resta.” You don't notice any changes, but you hope that the healing process is under way.

“I don't know. I'm no doctor, but I assume she'll need better help than we can give here.”

“ArcoWynn, give me a heads up when it starts getting warm enough to move out.”

You get a two beep confirmation.

“Layla, let's try to make a stretcher to carry Maiyawyn out of here.”

“With what, exactly?”

“Our coats, I guess...”

You tie your spare clothing to two sturdy branches. Newmans are fairly light, so you aren't worried about the strength.

The two of you huddle around Maiawyn to generate some warm and rest for the night.

ArcoWynn wakes you up. It seems that the sun has been up for a few hours.

“Ready to head out, Pheonixia?” Layla moves Maiyawyn onto the stretcher.

“Sure, just give me a moment.” You grab a half burned branch off the felled tree and use it to write on a nearby rock wall.

'PHEO WAS HERE. CU@TYLER'

Layla looks at your work, puzzled. “What in the great queen's name are those markings supposed to mean?”

“It'll let my friends know where we're heading. Let's go.”

It takes a few hours, but the two of you carry Maiya to Tyler. You set her down near the fire pit in the inn.

Layla kneels next to her. “I will do everything within my power to save her. I'll begin praying for her immediately.”

“Thanks...” Great...prayer. You need to find a real doctor.

“Well...keep me posted. I'm going to go see what the screaming is about.”

You leave Layla to her prayers to investigate the screams. There is a sickly looking man in a cloak slowly walking toward a small girl. She is crying.

You walk up to intervene. “Excuse me, sir. Are you ok?”

He moans, as if in pain. You get closer and immediately notice a nauseating smell.

“Oh God. Do you have some sort of infection or something?”

The man lunges at you, trying to bite your arm. Half the skin on his face is missing.

You grab the girl and run back to the inn. The girl is terrified and sobbing.

“Listen. I'm a force with the Hunter's Guild. You're safe with me.”

She sniffs a bit and looks up at you.

“There, that's better. What's your name.”

The girl gives you a few more sniffs, and answers with watery eyes. “A-alese.”

You're not sure why, but you're getting a feeling of deja vu. “Stay here. I'll go take care of that scary man.”

You walk back over the common room, which has become deathly silent as everyone watches Layla pray over your friend.

“Layla, we have a problem!”

You get dirty looks from everyone except Layla. She interrupts her unintelligible prayers to answer you. “How big of a problem? I am trying to pray for your friend.” You can tell that she is irritated, but she isn't showing it.

“There's someone out there. Really sick, delirious, even violent.”

She sighs and follows you outside.

The street is abandoned, save for the sickly man. She only needs to get within a few paces from the man before her face turns from sweet to hateful. A few strange words and the man is engulfed in blue flames.

“He...wasn't quite Palman anymore, was he?”

Layla turns and heads back to the inn. “No, he was not. His body had its soul ripped from it, and was left to rot.”

You're not sure how much of this religious talk you're ready to buy into, but you're at least on board for zombies being real.

“When your friend has recovered, we must make haste toward Reshel. That is the only town with enough black energy to perform such madness.”

You hold open the door for her as you both enter the inn. “You know about black energy?”

You head over to the restaurant within the inn and walk up to the bartender. “I wanted to grab some food for me and my friend. Do Espers have any dietary restrictions I should know about?”

The bartender laughs. “No, not that I know of. Here, let me get both of you some hot soup, on the house.”

He brings out two bowls of penguin bisque. The dish is purple, but at this point you're hungry enough not to care.

You bring a bowl over to Layla, but she doesn't respond. She continues to pray in a language you don't understand.

You go back to the bar to finish your meal. You end up killing time by playing some bar games with the locals, learning a few local customs, idioms, and the many terms for outsider/tourist. You realize that you must have been openly insulted by locals in more than a few towns without even knowing it.

Layla joins you at the bar after a few hours, bringing an empty bowl with her. “Thank you very much for the food early.”

“Least I could do. How is Maiya?”

“She will recover, but it may take some time. Her condition is improving, so the worst of it is over.”

The bar becomes a bit rowdy when a local grabs some of your new friends and drags them out the door, spouting some gibberish about an ice digging tool.

“Let's go see what they're talking about.”

You and Layla walk out of the inn to find a massive vehicle outfitted with front facing drills parked outside of town. A crowd is gathered around it.

You push your way through the crowd to find Nela supporting on one shoulder. His leg is in a split.

“Oh my God! Pheonie! We found you! We were afraid we were never going to see you again before we found that note.” She moves to give you a hug before realizing that she needs to stay at Ash's side.

“It's good to see you both. What happened to you?”

“Oh. Well, when you went to fight that slug thing, we chased after the owl, but...”

Ash interrupts. “Uhm, can we maybe find a place to sit down, first?”

The three of you catch up in the inn's common room as Layla and a mass of locals attempt to interpret Coralian language to the best of their ability. It seems Ash and Nela found more than their share of troubles in the forest. But they did manage to find 'the biggest shuttle [they] have ever seen' along with the massive ice digging machine parked out front. You do your best ot translate the important parts to Layla, which the locals overhear with silent anticipation.

Once Nela finally finishes her story, apprise them of the developments on your end.

Ash relaxes with a particularly strong cider as Layla works on his leg. “So, what now? Do we head over to this prophet guy? Where does Lutz live, anyways?” Layla's head perks up when he mentions Lutz.

“It's far east of here, but with that monster of an ATV you guys found, it shouldn't take us too long. We might have to take a pit stop to solve a problem in Reshel.”

“What's in Reshel?” Nela asks, seemingly uncomfortable not being the one to talk for once.

“Well...zombies I think? Layla knows more about it than I do, but she says it's pretty important we check it out.”

All five of you spend the night at the inn, free of charge. The amount of attention you've brought to the inn and its restaurant seems to justify your stay enough for you not to feel guilty.

Maiyawynn has woken up feeling groggy, but well enough to travel. She is less than talkative. Everyone simply gives her space to recover.

Everyone climbs into the surprisingly spacious digger and set out. The machine requires two people to pilot, so you and Nela take the helm. Ash guides you through the controls, which are fairly intuitive. Your being able to read the panel helps greatly. It seems that this thing doesn't just dig ice, it's got weapons.

You head east, towards Reshel. Ash and Maiyawyn sit in relative silence. In the back. Nela talks your head off, and you politely translate her inane anecdotes to Layla. After half an hour, she tells you not to bother and goes back to tending the injured Hunters.

The sensors warn you of a snow wall up ahead. “Hey guys. We're about to see what this thing is made of.” You switch on the drill. “Ready to plow through some snow?”

Ash answers, “How smooth is the ride through packed snow? I'm pretty sure at this temperature, it's more refrozen ice block than actual pow-” Ash is interrupted with violent vibrations as the machine digs through the ice. A few minutes pass, and your break through to the other side.

Maiyawyn speaks up, “Maybe next time, slow down?”

“Sorry, Maiya.” You were having a bit too much fun with your new toy.

The vehicle starts to shake again.

“Pheonixia, come on!” Maiyawyn sounds even more irritated.

The control panel reads seismic activity. “That one wasn't my fault.”

“There's a button over there that takes the limiter off the photon core and just underneath it is the cannon charging system. It says 'Limiter Toggle' on it.”

“How do you spell that?”

Another strike to the hull shakes everyone.

“Circle, backwards two, square, squiggly M, A with a dot in the middle, and a face with three nostrils.”

“Got it!” Nela presses the two buttons.

The worm is head right for you, giving you an excellent opportunity to line up a good shot. It rears its head to strike, and you land a full power shot right into its mouth.

You hear a screech of pain as it tunnels back into the snow. The sound of the tread beneath you tells you that you have some traction again. You turn the digger around as it slide down hill. You see Jut in the distance, along with Gumbious. You need to end this fight before the worm gets there.
