You are a creature of limitless power and potential. After slipping onto a freighter in the midst of subspace travels you have taken a small world, created two brains, and successfully linked them with subspace transmitters to extend your active domain. Humanity is, as of yet, unaware of your existence. In time, however, they will surely discover the spore. Perhaps it's time for the spore to cast out to a more permanent dominion? Perhaps he will fight to steal the dominions of other.

Either way, the spore is a great being with only one biological directive: Grow.

--
Last time on The Spore Quest, the spore left behind the now crewless Charlie station after the Xanadu incident caused its android to kill everyone. Instead, the spore left for Jacksona to seek out new infection vectors and learn more about the world, and learn it did! However, the expansive economic and military operations of Jacksona I's "Silver Rush" station made it unsuitable for hostile takeover with its thousands of peering eyes and hundreds of armed humans.

During a trip to the market the spore acquire new technologies, including a weapons technology, and a partial star chart for the local area. The Golden Galleon, its one and only ship, was also given an overhaul and an upgrade for its engine.

Meanwhile, back on the barren and arctic world of Joker, the spore has begun the process of carving out a site to grow its own biological ships.

And so, the thrilling adventures of The Spore resume!

Good to have Spore Quest back. I think we might still be able to take over Jacksonia despite its size. It all has to do with our exponential growth factor.

The Spore has the following 5 infection vectors:

Prostitute,
Maintenance engineer,
Information Broker,
Tourist,
Infected Ship Crew (counted together as a single vector)

If each individual spore host infects two others per day and this pattern is maintained, we can use the following equation to determine the infected population.

5*3^(x-1).

Today is day 1, there are 5 infected individuals
Day two: 15 infected individuals
Day three: 45
Day four: 135
Day five: 405
Day six: 1215
Day seven: 3645

The entire station has a population of only 4000. Even with a relatively slow infection rate, the station should easily fall under our control in just over a week, long before the Galleon is due to exit the system.

What do you think guys?
>>
>>41632555

We can't afford to provoke a military response right now anon.

A sustained conflict with the humans would be disastrous for us, even if we could take Jacksona.

The Spore has a map, and it says a great many things!

Jacksona I, Silver Rush: 4 humans.

(Each hex represents one fuel use for the purposes of travel. The Golden Galleon has been upgraded with a maximum one-way distance of 5 hexes)

It is now Day 15, and the upgrade and overhaul of the ship is underway. A message has come through to the captain's quarters from Director Pearson, and he has requested the captain go to his office and meet him. He's also commanded to bring his security officer.

The Platinum Falcon will leave for Joker within the next few days and discover the deceased crew of the Charlie station.

Overnight the hooker infected by the spore has infected a Jane. She's an office worker from Iridona that got transferred.

That's true. It would be pretty safe to take the station this way. We don't need to be overt and attempt to take over it by force, especially not at this stage. Let's just try to spread the infection as >>41632555 said but not be stupid about it.

That being said, I see no reason we can't try to spread the infection while also doing other things. Therefore I vote to slowly spread the infection "offscreen" and >Meet director Pearson

Golden Galleon: 11 humans, 1 warrior-type, 2 carrier-type, 1 proto-brain, 2 cats, 2 dogs, 1 turtle, 1 Poly, 1 chameleon.

>Visit Director Pearson
Your captain and security officer make their way to the FMC's administrative office, and wait for a few minutes in reception before being taken to Pearson's office. His director status is reflected in his office via its hardwood floor, fancy rugs, and expensive furniture. This is truly a man in charge. He is also accompanied by a military officer.

"Captain Buchanon, welcome. Please, both of you take a seat."

After Pearson greets your party he activates a sort of silent mode for the office, which puts down padded shutters over the windows and door. You can hear quiet electronic humming in the room.

"It should be safe now," Pearson says to the officer.

"Right. My name is Admiral Hathaway, and I am in charge of military operations here in the fringe. Captain Buchanon, there has been an incident and we have need of your ship, crew included."

Hathaway holds up a tablet that seems to have heavily redacted mission orders on it, but he withholds giving it to your party at this time.

"There is very little about what we're doing that you need to know, but because the Golden Galleon is the only freighter in the fringe with an inactive period and this is an emergency, your ship is needed for a supply run to a military installation. Frankly speaking, I'd like to just take your ship and crew it with military personnel and send it. Sadly, Director Pearson has denied permission to do so."

"What Admiral Hathaway is saying, is that if you allow your ship to be escorted to the installation in question, your crew will be given a bonus of 10,000 credits each, and 15,000 for the officers. This mission is classified, and will require a binding non-disclosure agreement. Will you accept?"

>>
>Accept the classified mission
"Very well. We will accept your mission, Admiral Hathaway," your captain host says.

"Good. We will immediately begin loading the necessary supplies onto your freighter. They should only take up about 75% of the cargo space. In addition, we will embed two soldiers onto your ship for the journey. Your ship will be escorted by two long-range escort ships."

Admiral Hathaway hands the captain the mission briefing tablet. The information on it is heavily redacted. There's not even a star chart on it. In fact, it has little to no additional information. There is a brief mention of a "station malfunction" of some kind.

"As always Captain Buchanon, your service to the FMC is appreciated. If there's nothing further you may be on your way," Phearson says.

(This actually looks like a tie, but after you rolled a 1 I'm going to assume that you'd rather die than try to commit to the infection. Mostly because that's very likely to actually happen if you do)

For a moment you seriously consider trying to sneeze and breathe as much spore as possible in the general direction of these two high-ranking FMC officials. Eventually you decide that releasing a large amount of spores or trying to attack these men in a secure office on a base with military and security personnel crawling all over would almost certainly result in your death.

You decide departing would be best, but before you do, the director asked if you have any questions. You doubt they would be answered in any detail, but nonetheless:
>Ask a question before leaving (write-in)

-- (Platinum Falcon)
A couple of your crewmen that have met a couple of guys on the Platinum Falcon head over to their ship to try and see if they can manage an infection of someone on board. They seem extremely preoccupied loading the ship and preparing it for launch to go to Joker. They have a couple days to do so, but crews like to get it over with quick and enjoy R&R for the final hours.

As busy as they are, you suspect you'd be unwelcome. You could always try, however. You also might be able to sneak a small animal like a cat onto their ship and try to slowly infect them that way.

"How long will this mission be?"

"It'll take you approximately 11 days for the round-trip journey. You're just delivering cargo."

>>41633986
Your newly-purchased cat slips onto the Platinum Falcon without issue, and it begins trying to slowly infect the crew.

It's doubtful you could take the whole ship before it departs while it's docked with the station, but by the time it docks with Joker you suspect that you'll have at least half of the ship under the control of spores. The remaining members will fall in moments. From there, you need only equip it with a mind and an Amethitium crystal.

--
Your captain and security officer return to their ship. A crew of soldiers is actively loading the cargo bay with heavy-duty crates, while the dockyard personnel upgrade and overhaul the engine. In approximately three days the ship should be prepared to depart.

This may be something only the broker could know, but how would one acquire another of the Amethitium crystals. Obviously they're too valuable to be sold in the market and we probably couldn't afford one even if we could find an option on the black market.

As for options, I vote to continue trying to slowly infect people (like in this plan: 41632555), while we wait for departure. Don't do anything stupid at least until we leave for station ???.

>Amethitium crystals
You have a small asteroid of them back at Joker. You just need a ship to mine them.

>>41634235
>insects
The FMC has a very strict policy against insects of any kind, and if they suspect even the slightest infestation they'll go ham on killing them off. The ship and station environment is also not good for them in general, since they lack food.

>Go to the market and try to infect a food court worker
A couple of your crewmen visit the station's food market. The various stores and stalls have surprisingly even distributions of customers.

They try to queue up and infect one of the stall workers, but in their attempt to do so they're pushed out of the way by impatient customers who then berate your crew for wasting time. These humans are very efficient in their purchase of foodstuffs.

>Infect the Platinum Falcon chef
Your cat attempts to sneak up on the chef and infect him. As he's preparing a meal for himself, the cat takes a bite at his ankle, and then is rewarded for it with a kick. The cat scurries away quickly. In time the chef succumbs to the will of the spore. This greatly accelerates the infection of the Platinum Falcon, and you suspect that by the time they leave the ship will be under your control. However, without an Amethitium crystal you will be unable to control it. If you put a small mind on the ship you think that after being disconnected from the subspace network it would continue toward Joker to relink itself.

Assuming control of the ship:
>Put a mind on the Falcon

>>41634635
Maybe we could try to imprint specific instructions on the individuals of the falcon. Repeat specific phrases and concepts at them to build up a strong memory of what we want them to do.
>>
>>41634694

Let's use humans from the Falcon's crew, disappearances from Jacksona will probably raise some alarms
>>
>>41634635
>Wait for the Falcon to reach Joker and deal with it then?
By that time we'll have infected an engineer that would turn off the bio alarms. Flood it with spores and done.
>>
>>41634701

Nah, remember that alcohol is strictly regulated and every illegal still is quickly shut down. We don't want that kind of heat on us.

>Put a mind on the Falcon. Store it in the hydroponics bay. Feed it with fertilizer there. With the cook under our control, an infection of the entire crew should only take 1 or 2 "mealtimes." In that case an infection will easily take place before the ship leaves.
>>
>>41634635
>>Put a mind on the Falcon
>Transfer the extra fertilizer to the Falcon from the Galleon?
Use extra fertilizer to make a proto-brain at minimal use of life.
>>
When we get the biomass for it, we should set up a sort of reef around a sun, consisting mainly of photosynthetic cells. If we find lifeforms than can act as living batteries, too...
>>

>>
>>41634789
By the time we have enough biomass for that we would have half the galaxy under our thumb.
>>
>>41634723
I like this idea, it seems like it could work.
>>
>>41634726
If we could quickly infect then convert another crew member into a mind that would be ideal. Crew would be wondering where they went but they are leaving in a few days and will be on downtime. One guy goes off to fuck some wenches for a day or two isn't unheard of and by the time they would be getting worried, they would likely all be infected because of the spore-soup they will be having for every meal.
>>
>>41634874
>>41634723
You suspect that with a mind controlling the ship, it would endeavor to reconnect with the network at Joker so that it can upgrade itself with an Amethitium crystal. It seems doubtful that it would run off somewhere, because there's not really anywhere for it to run off to.

>Put a mind on the Falcon
You take three of the Falcon's crewmen into its hydroponics bay and use the resources there to merge them into a small Spore mind, sufficient in size that when fitted with an Amethitium crystal it would be able to connect to your network.

The act of doing this reduces the crew of the Falcon down to 14.

You also take a moment to take the extra fertilizer supplies meant for Joker from the Galleon to the Falcon, so that they can be put to proper use. No sense in carting them around the fringe without any use for them.

(With that, there's not much left beyond the mission at hand)

Just make sure the prostitute and others on the station are taking the time to passively infect everyone they can. We can have the spores lay dormant in the persons they infect and converting more people to hosts could prove invaluable when we eventually attempt to take Jacksonia.
>>
>>41635026

>Timeskip and depart for ???
Just be sure to remember we're doing passive infections. (keep infected dormant)
>>
>>41635060
>passive infections
(After you leave there will be no additional infections, as I've mentioned in previous threads. Without a mind to control them individual hosts have their infection go almost entirely dormant.)

Only the initial infection seemed to avoid the dormant condition, and you've yet to discover the reason why.

--
While you wait the remaining three days for the ship's overhaul to be completed, the hooker you infected has taken over a janitor, a security officer, and another engineer. One of your infections also managed to infect their wife. You now have 8 human hosts on the Silver Rush.

The Platinum Falcon departs part-way through the 16th day with a fully-infected crew and a small mind on board. It will make it way to Charlie, refuel manually, and then go to Joker. The journey will take 6 days.

The Golden Galleon departs for ???, a 5-day journey with two escort ships following along. The ship is instructed to jump toward the destroyed gas refinery on the Beta route. You suspect the escort ships are there to keep pirates away.

Hopefully they succeed...

(Hope you like pirates, because you're getting them!)

On the way to ??? you hoped that the journey would go off without a hitch. You were wrong

So, so wrong.

The moment your ships come out of subspace at the half-way point where the Beta station used to be, you're immediately set upon by a Rising Fringe frigate. You just stopped to cool your drives, and instead things are heating up.

The escort ships immediately send an information packet to the Golden Galleon with rendezvous coordinates. You assume this is where ??? is located.

"Golden Galleon, hang back. We'll try to distract the frigate. If you see an opening to jump to the rendezvous coordinates, TAKE IT." The FMC captain cuts his transmission. The two soldiers on the Golden Galleon's bridge look concerned.

The two escorts burn at a rapid pace toward the frigate to try and get a volley in before it turns and blasts them into dust. The first escort misses the frigate, but the second lands a critical blow on the communications system, making the frigate effectively mute.

The escort ships make a poor attempt to try and outmaneuver the frigate, but the frigate also seems rather ineffectual in its attempts. Its turrets launch railgun volleys at the escorts, but only one hits. It blasts off a bit of armor on the edge of an escort, which seems unperturbed by the superficial damage.

How would you like to proceed?

>mfw they choose the joke option and roll a 97 on it

In a moment of tactical brilliance the spore realizes that it can use the Golden Galleon to ram the enemy frigate and severely damage its exposed weapon turrets. It takes advantage of this pathetic example of a battle and burns ahead at full speed.

The Golden Galleon T-Bones the frigate on the top of its rear with the landing strut on the front of the ship, and it manages to avoid being catastrophically destroyed as it rips the turrets from the frigate and sends their debris into space.

The frigate's captain seems utterly confused, and tries to turn its last top turret toward your freighter, while firing its lower turret toward an escort. The escort fires at the same time, and both ships hit each other.

The escort manages to blast the top turret before a slug from the frigate's railgun rips through its hull and destroys it.

The second escort takes a shot at the frigate and it rips through the last turret, leaving the frigate with only its spinal laser. Because the escort is more maneuverable the spinal laser is of little threat to it, but the Golden Galleon would not withstand its assault.

What will you do?

>Jump away
The Golden Galleon immediately resumes a course toward the rendezvous point at ??? and departs from the battle.

Just as the ship jumps into subspace you see a bright laser beam fire past the side of the ship, a near miss as the Golden Galleon slips away from the battle.

After the remaining two days of the trip you reach the destination on the edge of an ion nebula that seems to stretch on to infinity. You think the ship would be able to enter the edge of the nebula without much danger, but any incursion deeper in would likely result in the vessel's electronic systems being fried into oblivion.

The space around you is quiet, for the moment. There are no buoys, ships, or otherwise here, and with no extra fuel the Galleon has nowhere to jump to. You decide to wait, and hope that the escort ship survives, or that the people at your destination come looking for you.

-- (Joker)
Titanium Mining (Joker): 180t/day | 2520-1260 every two weeks | Material Capacity: 1900/3780

The Platinum Falcon arrives at its destination as planned and takes the 1260 titanium resources as intended. It drops off three extra supplies of biomass in the form of fertilizer, as well as a refuel for the outpost itself.

When it arrives, the cavern work is also completed. The cavern can now support two gestation pods for escort-sized ships (or a destroyer, once the technology is acquired), the geothermal generator, and a large spore mind of up to Stage 2. It also supports additional space for storing minerals, though you've yet to fill your reserves.

If the Falcon takes an extra day it can mine Amethitium crystals and possibly get as much as two of them. You may also begin gestating an escort ship, which should take about two weeks to complete. The ship will cost 580 titanium, three brains, and a supply of biomass.

It was never called that in bungie's day but yeah the flood always could fuck around with AI and tech if given the time. That was always something scary about the flood. They didn't just turn you into space zombies, they turned your body into a space zombie and picked your brain for anything useful to infect more people.
>>
>>41636822

We're actually (arguably) even more terrifying than the Halo Flood. The Flood in Halo could not do infiltration, which we can do easily. It could be possible for the spore to take over an entire planet without anyone noticing, something that is not possible with the flood. We should be able to conquer the galaxy if we can at least get ourselves firmly entrenched and otherwise well established.
>>
>>41636876
>always could fuck around with AI and tech if given the time

They didn't need that much time, it was at the point where once a grouping of Flood forms got on a ship, if the ship had a Sentient / Sapient AI it would take minutes until that AI started trying to kill off it's own crew.

>>
>>41636540
>How do we produce our own brains
You can sort of mimic them with the knowledge you have now, but reproducing brain cells in large quantities is something beyond what you currently know how to do.

>>41636622
Your attempts to mine Amethitium bare fruit, and moreso! You just barely manage to scrape out a second crystal before the ship returns to the outpost. You take three of the people on Joker and turn them and an Amethitium crystal into a gestating escort ship with lasers, and sensors, and FTL.

-- (???)
You wait. You wait for two whole days. On day 25 of the spore's life it receives a garbled hail with instructions from somewhere inside the nebula.

The Golden Galleon proceeds into the nebula per its instructions, and after a couple hours of navigating the calmer edge of the ion nebula a blue sphere comes into view.

A large planet, covered in water, orbiting the habitable region of a star. It seems to have a very strong magnetosphere, and even a breathable atmosphere.

As the Golden Galleon approaches and starts orbiting the planet, a less garbled transmission comes through. You receive directions to land on a specific point on the planet.

As instructed, the Golden Galleon descends to the watery world. As it enters the atmosphere and gets past the cloud layer the spore notices a small platform resting above the waters. It looks large enough to support your freighter and seems to have docking facilities as well.

As you're docking, you see the fin of an alien aquatic creature skim the surface, leaving little doubt that life exists in these oceans.

When the Golden Galleon docks, clamps engage to hold it in place, and two docking elevators raise out of the surface of the dock and connect to the ship.

"Golden Galleon, welcome to, uh... Well, you don't need to know where or what this is. Since you've had to come to us through the secondary protocol, I'm assuming your escorts were destroyed."

"We happened to cross paths with an RF frigate. At least one of the escorts was destroyed. We managed to ram a couple of its turrets off before jumping away as instructed."

"You did what?" The man on the video screen looks impressed. "You're a ballsy and frightening man. Hopefully you won't try to take us out next!" He laughs at the silly joke he made. You laugh with him, but for different reasons.

"The two soldiers on your ship will escort you down to the station. You alone, captain. This is all a bit of a mess now that the RF have cut off our normal route."

The two soldiers and your captain host make their way down the elevator into the research facility, which was built into the side of a chasm on the planet. You suspect that the docking platform can be retracted below the surface just enough to hide it from view. The FMC has gone to great lengths to keep this facility a secret.

When the elevator reaches the inside of the facility, you're greeted by armed guards.

"Welcome to the facility," says the captain of the guard. He looks at a tablet. "Captain... Buchanon. Right. This way, please."

You are escorted by two armed soldiers. Your own spore military guards wait at the elevator, as they have never been here before.

The captain is escorted through some of the most clean and sterile corridors he's ever seen with white everywhere. There are colored lines painted on the sides to indicate what sector of the facility you're in, and signs indicating how to get around.

Finally, the captain reaches a door marked "Administrator Lyson" and escorted inside. The guards wait at the door. Captain Buchanon is greeted by an older man in a labcoat.

"Ah, hello! Welcome! I suppose you have questions, but I can't answer most of them. Actually, you really shouldn't even be here! But, well... shit happens right?"

Ask about RF attacks. We, understandably, don't want to jump back into a location last visited by a pirate capital ship unguarded.

Also, I noticed we're alone in a room with an old powerful man who just ordered his guards to wait outside. How risky would an infection attempt be? I'm guessing extremely risky, but I'd be interesting to get a ballpark number for how dangerous it is.

"Captain Buchanon, Serial Number 158294, Fringe Mining Corporation."

Lyson looks perplexed. "You're uh, you're not being held captive. At least, you're not a prisoner. This is an FMC facility, though it is highly classified."

Lyson presents his FMC badge with his employee serial number on it, as well as his name and job: Lyson Hodges, Research Administrator.

"I'm sure you've already guessed, but this is a research facility. And since we're on a planet teeming with aquatic species, I'm sure you can guess why we're here."

"What can you tell me about this planet?"

"We call it Gates, in honor of its discoverer. 98% of the planet's surface is covered in water, and the remaining two percent is a small landmass in the northern hemisphere that is volcanic. It has a bit of life on it, but it's mostly volcanic materials. There are ice caps on the northern and southern poles."

Most of what he's said is stuff you could have figured out with a single orbit of the planet, or had seen already.

"And the nebula?"

"Ah, The Endless. I'm sure you had heard of it already. We have no idea how large it is. It seems to go on forever, hence the name. We know there are stars and systems in The Endless, but the fierce ion storms prevent any exploration, as well as- Er, anyways... We were lucky to find the Gates system and this very special planet, which has somehow managed to flourish."

Lyson's computer beeps at him, as well as the PDA in his labcoat pocket. "They seem to be calling for me. I'm afraid I have to send you back now. Your ship will be refueled and your cargo will be picked up by our maintenance staff. These guards from the Surveyor of Opportunity will take you back to your ship."

You recognize the name, which was printed in white on a strange destroyer parked on the surface of the chasm. Its design is different than most FMC vessels.

The guards escort the captain and the turned spore guards back to the elevator.

This research station / outpost *probably* isn't Ultra-Super-Sekret, just Sekret, if anything it's probably just something they have to research the native wild life to see how they cope with being in the Nebula and the Nebula itself without danger of being fucked by the Ion storms.

Very useful to us, basically.

The captain and the guards ascend up to the Golden Galleon. As the elevator rises, you see a strange jellyfish that appears to be trying to eat part of the elevator. The alien aquatics are diverse.

Up in the cargo bay of the Golden Galleon, a group of what appear to be five maintenance staff and two guards arrive alongside a remote-controlled lifting robot for carrying the cargo.

Inside their facility they were safe, but on the Golden Galleon they are doomed. The spore-filled atmosphere fills their lungs and the seven humans succumb to your control.

The hosts have been compartmentalized for most of their stay on the station. They know a lot of basic facts about it, but they also are unaware of its true motives. They know that the FMC built this facility for something bigger than aquatic research. The facility holds about 200 people, mostly researchers, staff, and military. The destroyer is staffed by 40 crewmen and 30 marines. The facility has no subspace buoy, and in fact, the human subspace technology doesn't seem to work very well here because of the magnetosphere and the ion nebula. The subspace buoy is instead located on the destroyer, which has to leave the nebula every time they wish to transmit or receive messages. You didn't start to notice until you landed, but your connection to the other spore minds is definitely weaker than it was. It is not severed, however.

These new hosts also happen to think it's a nice planet in general.

So do you.

How will you proceed?

>Load mutated hosts into the crates and try to take the station by force (Mutate the captured guards and staff into attack forms?)

>>
>>41638162

That's possible, or it could just be "what they want us to believe." I wonder what rumors, if any our spore-host military guards have heard about the instillation. They have probably at least some idea of what's going on here seeing as they were stationed on a ship heading to this location.
>>

The Endless is the weirdest thing nearby, it could be the origin of the spore that ended up in subspace.

There could something similar with the life here that is also naturally subspace-sensitive.

See if you can have 10 crew take a swim in the ocean.

But have only 9 come back out. The last one mutates into an aquatic warrior.

It's one class larger, and based on the advanced tech it seems to possess it's probably twice as deadly.

>>41638362
That's... sort of what the infection-type forms are. I'll say that if warrior-types get dismembered you can roll to turn them into drones temporarily.

>WE IN DA OCEAN BRO
You set the turtle loose into the ocean. The freedom of the water feels quite nice. Since your infected turtle also doesn't need to breathe you swim the turtle down to the ocean floor next to the research facility. There's some plant life down here, as well as some crustaceans.

Infecting the sea life here would take some time, but you think that you if you work fast enough you might get a powerful enough colony to turn some of the aquatic species into viable warriors to fight the humans.

Either way, your turtle begins including the aquatic life near the facility into your dominion.

>Continue the cargo unloading
You begin loading the cargo onto the elevator. The elevator only holds about 6 crates, and your storage has 45 crates total. This process will take some time.

The elevator descends and takes the staff down into the rock that makes up part of the chasm. A large cargo room has been mined out of the rock.

There are three other staff here. Two of them are guiding the third as he operates the ceiling crane and places the crates where they need to go.

With seven people you could easily take them.

>Try to take one of them more subtly
One of your hosts strikes up conversation with one of his colleagues as he's trying to work. During conversation he sneezes, and blamed it on the ship. The sneeze claims an eighth host from among the others, and then the eighth host's friend comes to ask about the freighter and succumbs to a second sneeze from the new host.

You now have nine hosts from the station, and two of the three in cargo.

The crane operator calls down and asks the others to resume their work. When you look up at him, you can see a camera on a wall that seems to be pointed at the elevator. You know that there are security cameras in several locations throughout the facility, but most near external access locations and in important areas like the reactor room or their hydroponics bay. Because it's a secret facility, you know that the guards have no cameras in the research section of the outpost, which is divided by a special airlock.

If the away team doesn't resume its unloading it'll be suspicious, but it'll look more like they're slacking off or refusing to work rather than anything else.

The seven original hosts go back up to the Galleon and resume their unloading duties.

As they do so, one of the crane spotters approaches the operator as if to inform him about something. As he starts to do so, he sneezes and infects the operator.

With the cargo staff and two guards under your control you have a whole 10 hosts from the Gates-Lyon Research Facility.

From here on, it's rather troubling. You could wait until the shift change in a few hours and try to start infecting the other inhabitants from the inside out, instead of the outside in.

Alternatively, you could play on the lack of suspicion from the other inhabitants and attempt to push in and hit other targets. If the guards come, you might even infect them as well.

>Wait for a shift change.
>Have the guards leave their post and try to hit another target (Where?)

>>

>Wait for a shift change.

Infect more sea life
>>
>>41639206

With the cargo staff under our control, we can much more easily sneak infected warrior forms aboard. Bring some warriors down in the next batch and store them away beyond the exterior cameras. When the time comes, they can lay an ambush and hopefully catch station personal unaware outside of the watchful eye of the camera.

We have spore carrier and warrior forms right, or is it just warriors? Spore carrier forms are a bigger risk given this is a military research cite.
>>
>>41639206
>>Have the guards leave their post and try to hit another target (Where?)
We need to infect one of the crew of the destroyer. Once that is out of the way, we have little to fear.
>>
>>41639272
Proactive, and less suspicious than guards leaving. Seconded.
>>
>>41639223
>layout
Ah, right.

The research facility has a standard layout you would expect from a station or a ship, but at a different scale, and it also has a small barracks for the marines from the destroyer.

It has an administrative wing with offices, a facility master control room, a security station, and a barracks.

The housing wing has various quarters, a mess hall, hydroponics bay, and a recreational room with a swimming pool and a /fit/ room, among other things for entertainment.

There's also the engineering wing, which has the reactor room, waste recycling, atmospherics, and other such facilities.

Finally, there's the research wing. It has a fancy airlock and lots of sensors and shit inside. Beyond that... who knows?

>>41639286
You're doing this automatically. It'll take about half a day for you to infect enough sea life that you think you can start turning fish into some sort of merman warriors.

>>41639251
Most of the destroyer crew remains on the destroyer. Occasionally the crewmen will cross over to use the recreational facilities on the station.
>>
>>41639339
We need to find one of the ones using the rec room and infect him!
>>
>>41639339

Getting someone to the rec facilities could prove fruitful. For example: (host sees destroyer marine working out) "hey man, want some water"

Research wing with sensors is extremely dangerous. We can't attack it until we have at least one real scientist infected. We need to know what's inside there.
>>
>>41639339
>Have out guards ask if there are any recreational facilities they can use while the cargo's unloaded. They have a feeling it's going to take awhile.
>>
>>41639339
>The housing wing has various quarters, a mess hall, hydroponics bay, and a recreational room with a swimming pool and a /fit/ room, among other things for entertainment.

That sounds like the place then. If the Destroyer crew sometimes come to swin in the puuru.

Or eat in the mess hall. Yes, split them up between mess hall and recreational stuff.

>Do both
(Fair enough)
When the second group of crates arrives on the elevator, the marines sneak out and head toward the rec room.

Part-way through using the crane, the operator stops and breaks one of the handles of the crane.

"Engineering? This is cargo, one of the levers on the crane just broke."

"Again? You didn't let Jefferson's gorilla hands operate it did you?"

"No. Can you send down one of your guys and have them fix it again?"

"Fine. Be down in five."

In the mean time, the guards enter the recreation room. It's a beautiful place to behold with its potted plants and its high ceiling. There's a workout room behind a big pane of glass, and a pool with a view of the chasm. Next door is the mess hall.

You spot one of the crewmen working out in the fitness room, so your guards enter and try to make conversation.

"Krieger, how goes the Surveyor?"

"Eh, same old. Never anything to do on that damn ship."

Back in the cargo room the engineer shows up to inspect the broken lever.

At almost the same time your cargo crewman and your guard sneeze in the faces of their victims and infect them.

They succumb to your influence quickly, and now you have control of an engineer and one of the weapons officers of the Surveyor of Opportunity.

"Hiddleton, Urist, return to your posts immediately," chimes over the guards' radios. With your mission more or less accomplished they do as they're told for the moment.

The cargo technicians continue their work, albeit a bit slower than before for the sake of time.

Nothing really interesting. The marine is a lot better at soldiering than the security officers of Joker or your ship are, but that's not really a great addition. The weapons operator knows things about the railguns and the lasers, but mostly how to operate them. He couldn't build one.
--

Your newly-acquired engineer makes his way to the engineering wing of the facility and returns to his normal post in the monitoring room. It's a more dimly lit room with banks of monitors and a few other engineers monitoring various systems.

The crewman goes to another portion of the facility and elevates up to the Surveyor of Opportunity which is docked with a small port on the top of sea floor next to the chasm. It's a vessel of similar size to your freighter, but heavily armed. It has many of the same facilities just like every other FMC station or vessel, but also has a host of retracting railgun turrets and a large spinal laser. It's also specially fitted to be able to take off and land underwater.

Outside the facility in the waters of Gates, the spore colony slowly produces with the combined minds of some fish and crustaceans a shell-armored crab with a humanoid body and enormous claws. It has thick organic armoring, and could easily kill several humans before being downed by the marines and their rifles, assuming they're brave enough to try.

It is a frightening and grotesque figure, and it's under your control.

It pokes its head out from the vegetation, and sees a research submarine go by and dive into the chasm to dock with the research facility.

But that will have to wait for another time!

(I'm planning to run the next episode of Spore Quest on Wednesday at 5 p.m. I might even try to make a map of the facility, since you'll likely spend quite some time here. As always, I'll be around for questions.)

I've been taking whatever spore art is posted and trying to incorporate. Your crab-type spore is one such example, as well as the warrior-type.

So unless someone dumps a bunch of great spore ships I could probably use that.

Thanks for running as always. This has been a particularly fun and long session with lots of ups and downs. I think a map of the research station could be really valuable. The most important thing, however, is that you (the QM) keeps having fun. I've been a part of quests that have ended part way through and it's always been annoying.

Thanks again for a great round today.

Does the soldier make combat any easier/better?
You would think knowing thier moves and code words would help.
Also he probably helps make our drones better fighters, unless they go by instinct.
How big is this place?
How many people do we have left to infect?
Could we build a hive mind in the ocean?
Could we let our warrior get captured on purpose making them think its a new species they never seen?
>>
>>41640199
Time to tally up knowledge and morphing capabilities, eh pal?
Here's hoping we got some jellyfish in the mix, along with some other weird as fuck alien sea critters with unique things to offer.
Cephalopods with camo and ink defenses ahoy?

AYY
Spore has it's first planet.
We're covering the entire ocean in a spore covering like algae.

YES, THAT IS WHAT WE'LL DO.

WE WILL MAKE OUR OWN LEELAND. THE ENTIRE PLANET WILL BE A DEADLY ORGANISM ITSELF.
>>
>>41640286

Seconding building a hive mind in the ocean. There is obviously a ton of biomass here, and under the sea is very secure.
>>
>>41640286
The soldiers and marines of the FMC are trained for regular modern infantry combat with guns. Even these marines aren't all that great in melee combat.

Your units don't have any ranged weapons as of yet.

You'll do a better job of fighting against them by using proper tactics, and you'll have better knowledge of their own tactics.

So yeah, I guess you are better at fighting in a tactical sense.

>weird as fuck alien sea critters
There will be some interesting creatures on Gates, and not just the freaky jellyfish I posted earlier.

I'm open to interesting images of sea critters that could potentially inhabit Gates.

>>41640344
>what is our time limit
The facility doesn't check in very often because they don't want to raise attention. They only call in about once a month, or whenever something bad happens.

In this case, the latter is true. There was a critical breakdown with something in the research lab that required fixing.

Okay so almost completed, not yet ready to transfer the Mind there?

How much bigger would we have to make it to accomodate Stage 3?

Though that's moot now, now that we have an entire ocean in which to grow our true central mind. No need to make the Joker one past Stage 1 where it is, when we can grow a Stage 2 mind and beyond here in this glorious gem.
>>
>>41640259
Another potential design.
>>
I wonder if the life here, adapted to the ion shit, could negate the interference potentially...
>>
>>41640595

This reminds me, would we be able to build a frigate before our chamber is completely destroyer sized? A frigate is one size smaller than a destroyer right? So we should be able to build it in a smaller chamber if I remember correctly.

You are correct, this completely isolated research station with a very rich biosphere is the perfect location for our primary hive mind.

I honestly had forgotten about it. Since it was intended that it be moved, it's probably best to assume it has been.

>>41640624
You can produce two escorts, a frigate, or a destroyer. You only have the technology required to make an escort ship though. Making something of those larger scales eludes you.

(Incidentally, that cavern is apparently fucking enormous, but since you're playing as an alien spore it's one of the less strange parts of the quest)

Well hey, once we control this other ship, we'll finally.

FINALLY.

Have the combination of
1) Having the knowledge of Subspace Theory
2) Having a crystal embedded in a spore mind of ours
3) Having a human subspace buoy under our control

So we can finally test how direct spore-to-human-tech subspace communication works. We can find out if we can learn to act like a human subspace buoy, and render the official buoy redundant, see if we can reuse its crystal for something else.

Lmao what

I believe nightvision from cats was forgotten.

Aquatic creatures have varying levels of sight to give (mantis shrimps see ALL, they have a huge range of visible spectrum)' and certain new senses (sharks sense electricity, even the tiny amount given off by creatures)
Not to mention powerful smellers n shit, smell blood a mile off

Right.

You can consider Aquatic Physiology (Expert) to be your new level at this point. You've gotten enough fish infected, after all.

Assume that most of what you've just said fits in with that.

Once we have this experimental advanced destroyer we will have a combination of cutting edge technology and an entire world we can convert to growing the spore. It's possible that once the facility is taken we can move to full scale war against the humans. While such a course of action is risky (I would personally strongly advise against it) we are not at risk of being wiped out altogether. Taking the ship, station, and planet marks a start of a new era in the spore's evolution. Assuming, of course, that we don't completely fuck-up the takeover.

Posting a spore-like ship in case it could be useful.

So I was working on a shitty-looking layout for the research lab, but because the picture I used has many floors, and because I'm so attached to it, I decided that this would be a bit ugly.

Unless I come up with an interesting plan, we're going to stick with this for the moment.

Here's some information:

Surface Elevator: One large spire with a cargo elevator and a personnel elevator. The personnel elevator goes directly into any floor of the station.

There are also additional elevators throughout the facility where appropriate.

First Floor:
Cargo Bay. Mostly underground.
----Also contains a fabrication room for fabricating various parts and other objects.
Second Floor:
Residence Area.
----Contains a separate elevator to the recreation area, the administrative offices, and engineering.

Third Floor:
Administration Wing: Contains primary control room, administrative offices, barracks, armory, security monitoring post, medical bay.
----Elevator on the left side to the engineering wing, that also leads up to the destroyer docking port.

Recreation Wing: Contains a fitness center, a lounge, a swimming pool, a conference/theater hall, and various other morale-boosting amenities. Also contains the kitchen and mess hall, and a hydroponics bay.

Fourth Floor:
Research Wing: Contains ???
----Underground passage to the sub pen.
Sub Pen: ???

Fifth Floor:
Engineering: Contains reactor, water pumps, waste disposal and recycling, atmospherics, reactor fuel refinery, and various other engineering facilities.

And that should be it, unless there's anything that I missed or anything that someone feels a facility such as this should have.
>>
>>41641175

>Without a mind to control them individual hosts have their infection go almost entirely dormant.)
>Only the initial infection seemed to avoid the dormant condition, and you've yet to discover the reason why.

What.

I thought you explained that already. With a contradictory explanation that dormancy isn't automatic, it's deliberate.

>>41193498
>(Good point. The reason why the minds would need to resurface is this: Each one of those minds would endeavor to collectively grow the spore. It would revert back to a less intelligent state where its only goal is to create a Stage 1 Mind. Presumably you don't want them trying to do that, so as you leave the station you would lift control and let the spores go dormant.)
