You are Siegfried Schmidt, a former guard from the city of Morsland. Due to various circumstances, you have become the new wielder of Galadriel, a holy sword which houses a powerful six-winged angel of the same name. Now you have come to the White Watchtower, a fortress close to the border between the Forsaken Lands and the kingdom of Iseria, to train with the crusaders so that you can protect yourself from the demons that might come after you now that the sword is in your possession.

A lot has happened since you won the melee. Roland arrived right after you started fighting Erika, congratulated you, then went to participate in the next jousting round. Unfortunately, he was tired from the trip and lost during the third round. He spent the rest of that night sleeping, so you only found out what happened the day after. It turns out Alfred and his father were having some sort of disagreement concerning an arranged marriage, Roland didn't really go into detail. Things got heated, so Alfred ended up running away from home. Of course, Alfred was still 17 and had no idea how to get by on his own, so the gold he brought with him eventually ran out and he had to resort to stealing. That was when Reinhardt caught him. Thankfully, Roland managed to smooth things over between Alfred and their father after reaching some sort of compromise. He didn't say too much more about it and you didn't push for more info. Roland's family business is his business, best not to stick your nose in it.

As for house Lione, both Celia and Geoffrey have given the king their approval, and now a ceremony is being planned where the king will pledge his kingdom's support to the crusade. Though both of them gave the king their approval, however, you noticed Celia seemed a bit sour during the discussion. You asked Geoffrey about it, worried that she wouldn't give the king her approval after all, but Geoffrey reassured you that she would give the king her approval.

“Don't worry, she knows you can handle yourself. She's just a little sore about her loss is all.” He said, amused. “She still thinks she'd have won were it a 'fair fight', but she won't speak ill of you to the king. She's actually very competitive, and this was the first time she lost to anyone besides me. She'll be sore about it for a while, but I think this was a good experience for her. Overconfidence has always been her biggest weakness.”

Concerning the ceremony, it seems a large portion of the kingdom's nobility will be attending. There will be a formal ceremony, in which the king will pledge Galloway's support to the watchtowers and their crusade, after which there will be a celebration to commemorate the reforged alliance. To be honest, you'd prefer it if the king would just pledge Galloway's allegiance and be done with it so you could move on to Belmore, but apparently this is some sort of tradition for Galloway, a last celebration before going to war with the forces of Malaphas, so you say nothing.

In preparation for this, you and the others have been going over things you'll need to know beforehand. This includes etiquette, proper speech around the nobility, and also...

“Step, step, step, now turn. Step, step, step, now turn. Just like that. Any questions?”

Currently, you are in the palace ballroom along with most of your honor guard and the escorts who accompanied you from the Red and White Watchtowers. Daniel is currently demonstrating the proper method of dancing at a formal event, using Roland as a demonstration partner. Joan's hand slowly rises to the air upon Daniel asking for questions.

“Yes?”

“Do we actually have to attend the celebration?” Berry squawks for her.

“We all should be there for the ceremony. The celebration that will come after is not mandatory though, no.”

“Oh. Well in that case, I think I'm gonna go back to my room and read. Call me if something important comes up.” Berry translates, before Joan gets up and leaves through the ballroom double doors.

Daniel sighs, but makes no attempt to stop her from leaving. “Does anyone else feel like leaving?”

“Actually, I think I'm just gonna go too...” Erika says, starting to rise from her seat before Daniel stops her.

“Oh no you're not. I'm making your attendance mandatory.”

“What, why?!”

“Because I think this will be an excellent learning opportunity for you. You've spent most of your life cooped up in the tower, swinging swords and devouring everything in sight. It's high time you had a chance to do something more lady like.”

“Oh come on, that's bullshit! How come Joan and Ganelon can choose not to go but I can't?”

“Because Ganelon volunteered for guard duty and Joan doesn't participate in belching competitions unlike a certain someone. Also because I said so.”

Erika groans loudly, but stays seated. Daniel is just about to continue his lesson, when King Alain comes through the door and calls out to him.

“Excuse me, Daniel, may I have a word?”

Daniel nods. “Of course. Roland, would you continue the lesson while I'm gone please?”

“Sure thing.”

Daniel then exits the large circle of chairs you've all made, and exits the ballroom with the king. Roland stands in the center of the circle and looks around at everyone.

“Well, you all saw Daniel demonstrate what to do, now let's see everyone try it themselves. Let's see...Siegfried, Reinhardt, let's start with you two.”

“What? Why us?” You ask, reluctant to dance with another guy.

“Because you're both about the same height. Now come on, it's just practice.”

Reluctantly, you get up and stand in the center with Reinhardt. You do as Daniel demonstrated earlier, while Roland watches and makes corrections.

“No no no, your hands should be a little lower. A little more. Theeere you go.”

“Hey buddy, at least buy me a drink first.” Reinhardt jokes, causing the others in the circle to laugh. Well, most of them. For some reason, Avaline is looking the other way and her cheeks seem a little red. What's her problem?

“Alright, now step, step, step, turn. Step, step, step, turn again. So far so good.”

---------
Others are called up two at a time to demonstrate. Roland watches and makes corrections when needed, and eventually Daniel returns through the double doors, seeming a little somber.

“There you are Daniel. Is something wrong?” Roland asks.

“Well, something important has just come up, and I'm afraid I won't be able to attend the ceremony or the celebration as a result.”

“Did something happen?”

“No, no, just something I need to take care of, nothing to worry about. I apologize Siegfried, I would attend if I was able, but this is important.”

“You don't have to apologize to me Daniel. Is there something I can do to help?”

“Thank you, but I'll be alright on my own. Besides, out of everyone here you especially should be here for the ceremony. In any case though, I think we've spent enough time practicing here. We'll call it a day here, but make sure you're all here tomorrow after breakfast so we can go over etiquette one last time. I may not be able to attend, but I won't have Galloway's nobility saying the people of the Watchtowers are uncultured.”

With the lesson concluded, everyone goes their own separate ways. Avaline goes to talk in hushed tones with Aleria, Roland stays behind to talk with Daniel, and you and Reinhardt head upstairs, you towards your bedroom and Reinhardt towards the top floor, where Princess Catherine should be finishing her own lessons soon. Reinhardt has been spending more and more time with her since the tournament, making any excuse he can to see her. It's funny, you've known Reinhardt almost your whole life, and he's never been like this before.

“So, you seemed to be paying real close attention to Daniel's lesson back there. I never took you for someone interested in dancing.” You joke.

“I dunno what you're talking about, I was just watching like everyone else.” Reinhardt defends.

“Right, and that's why you were leaning forward and sitting in the front. Just try not to step all over Catherine's feet at the party, alright?”

Reinhardt punches you in the arm, before you both go your own way. You find your room and step inside, setting your bag down and rolling your shoulders. You notice a new set of nice clothes have been set out for you by one of the servants while you were gone. You set it aside for now and take a seat at the desk, a sheet of paper and a pen in front of you. In addition to everything else, it seems you're supposed to give some sort of speech to everyone after the king pledges his support. Daniel suggested that you start writing your speech ahead of time so you have an idea what to say, but admittedly you've been holding off on doing so. The ceremony will be in a few days though, so you had a servant bring you paper and a pen so you could sit down and get started on it now. Now that you're sitting here looking at the paper though, you're honestly not sure how to start. What sort of speech should you even give?

You think taking a moment to thank the people of Galloway would be a good place to start. These people will be looking up to you during the crusade too, so maybe you should try saying something to inspire them? You scribble down a few things, cross them out, scribble some more, and cross it out again. Dammit, you have no idea how to go about this. Sighing in frustration, you set your pen down and start massaging your temples, wondering just how you're going to pull this off.

'Having trouble?' Galadriel asks.

'Yeah. I'm trying to figure out what to write, but I have no idea where to start.'

'Don't think about it so hard. Your speech doesn't have to be long, just write down what comes naturally, and that should be enough.'

You scratch your head, trying to think of something to say when your eyes turn to the stack of letters from the farm's survivors. You think about the letters you've read so far, about all the people you helped save and what may have happened to them had you not been there. Slowly, an idea comes to mind and you start writing again.

----------
By the time you've finished, the moon has started to rise and your eyelids are starting to grow heavy. Satisfied with what you've written, you stash away your speech and hop into bed. With your speech finally written, you're just about ready for the ceremony.

Lets see.
"I've been thinking about the memories with Alastor and Balaam (I think thats what his name was). I'm going to be fighting a lot with my wings it seems and I still don't quite have it down as much as I'd like. So you want to spar? You'd be the best person to learn from.

Also its been probably been a long time since you've had an actual opponent."

Alright, couple votes for fighting before the ceremony, but I think I'm going to limit it to one simply because combat tends to take a while. Majority seems to want Galadriel aerial duel, so I'll go with that. One sec.

Two days before the ceremony, you're in Galadriel's sword plane speaking with her about a couple things, particularly about the coming crusade once Galloway and Belmore pledge their support. The topic eventually strays to the Demon Lords, and discussing ways to fight them. You've seen Balaam and Alastor fight in Galadriel's memories, and one thing you noticed was that both of them had wings. Alastor doesn't seem to use them very often, but Balaam spent the entire fight that you saw in the air. Galadriel informs you that both Eligos and Lilith are also capable of flight, though only in their true forms.

"So I'm gonna need to practice aerial combat then." You think aloud.

"That would be a wise course of action, yes." Galadriel agrees.

"Alright. Then in that case, might as well get started now."

"Very well, what sort of memory should I pull up for you?"

"Actually, I was wondering. You could probably teach me more about fighting in the air than some voiceless memory, so maybe we should just spar."

Galadriel regards you silently for a moment. "I would prefer not to."

"Why?"

"Because I am worried I will hurt you."

"Come on, it can't be that bad. Besides, we've already established that we can't be killed here, so there's no risk in it."

"I'm sure."

Wordlessly, Galadriel stands up, unfurls her wings, and draws her sword, the same one at your side right now.

"Very well then. Use your wings and we'll get started then."

You do as she says, activating your wings and following her up into the air. You stand about 200 feet apart, when she tells you to come at her whenever you're ready.

Have Galadriel take the speech into meditation realm so you don't fuck up the delivery. She can basically act like a mouthpiece for you and you can come off as really fookin smart/sincere by making it seem like it was from the cuff.
>>
>>41636605
Nah Sieg has got this. I don't think she would agree to that anyways.
>>
>>41636193
You start by shifting your sword into a halberd, then fly forward to close the distance. Galadriel does not move. You try to feint and throw a few probing jabs, hoping to test her defenses and find an opening. You find absolutely none, every jab is met by a parry, every attempt to feint is seen through.

Having found now opportunities to hit her, you try to make your own by putting your back to the sun and suddenly dropping below, hoping the difference in height will be to your advantage. You lunge, thinking you might just hit her and then...nothing. She just disappears. Did she just Blink? You're certain you didn't hear any incantatio-

Your thoughts are immediately cut of as Galadriel charges straight into you from behind at break neck speed. Thank Aureus this isn't a real fight, or your spine probably would have snapped from the impact. The collision sends you flying forward, when Galadriel suddenly appears right in your path and swings a large golden hammer at you, smacking you straight down towards the mountain peak.

You land feet first with a thunderous crash. Add the possibility of broken legs to what would have happened were this a real fight. Before you can even think about trying to get back up, you can see Galadriel divebombing straight towards you, the hammer still in her hands.

Well, she's definitely stronger and faster than you, but maybe you can trick her? You wait for it, watching nervously as Galadriel gets closer, then cast Blink, intending to trick her into crashing into the mountain.

The spell goes off, you teleport above where Galadriel should crash, and...she's not there. Where is she?

Your answer comes in the form of Galadriel's hammer cracking down over your head, sending you crashing right back into the mountain. You hardly even feel yourself hit the ground, as your vision starts to fade the moment her hammer strikes you...

--------
Your eyes open to the sight of the moon and stars overhead. Galadriel is sitting next to you, feelings of concern coming from her side of the mental link.

"You're finally awake."

You grab your head, still throbbing in pain, and sit up. You're still a little sore, but it's much better than how you thought you'd feel after that one-sided fight.

"Well that sure is reassuring." You respond dryly.

"I tried to warn you Siegfried. If you want to practice fighting opponents that can fly, I'd rather you practice on a memory. If it's my advice you're after, then I'm perfectly capable of giving it after watching you fight. All this accomplished was getting you hurt."

"Alright, fair enough I guess. How did you teleport back there though? Were you casting Blink, or were you just moving that fast?"

"I was casting Blink, yes."

"How? I didn't hear any incantation."

"Incantations are a way to provide focus when casting a spell. Like foci, incantation make spellcasting easier, but it can be done without them."

"Maybe I should start trying that then."

"No. If your focus wavers while casting a spell, it may have unexpected results. I must ask that you hold off on attempting to do so until you've had more experience with spellcasting."

"I'd try to argue, but then again the last time I ignored your advice I got pummeled into a mountain."

"I'm glad you see reason. Now I believe it's getting late in the real world, you should go now and get some rest. No more sparring until after the ceremony, you need time to rest."

-----
Nobles arrive in droves the days leading up to the ceremony. Lots of them, all here to see their king swear to support the watchtowers' crusade. The many empty guests rooms start to fill up quickly, as those who don't live in the noble district of Tarrin stay at the palace for the ceremony. Amongst those coming are Roland's family, including Alfred, and Avaline's family, who are apparently very high ranking nobles in Galloway. One more reason to avoid her.

The ceremony begins in the palace ballroom. Tables and chairs have been set up to accommodate everyone, and yet there is still plenty of space to dance after the ceremony is over. At the head of it all is the king, with Celia and Geoffrey Lione standing beside him. Standing opposite the king is you and Knight-Captain Arnault, surrounded by your honor guard.

"Ladies and gentlemen." The king begins. "I have gathered you all here today because we now stand at the cusp of a new Crusade. The Swordmaiden, Galadriel, has chosen a new Champion, who stands before us today. The house of Lione, descended from the first Champion, Asher, have observed this new Champion, and are ready to share their thoughts with us today. Geoffrey Lione, can you speak for the Champion's character?"

"I trust this Champion's character, your majesty. I believe he will be a shining example to all of Galloway, as my ancestor before him was."

"Celia Lione, can you speak for the Champion's strength?"

Celia does her best to hide it, but you detect a hint of bitterness in her tone as she speaks. "I trust this Champion's skill at arms. I believe he will guide our soldiers to many victories om the coming Crusdade."

"Then so be it. With house Lione's approval and my people's blessing, I find this Champion worthy of Galloway's support. Siegfried Schmidt, when you go to war with the infernal armies of Malaphas, you shall find the armies of Galloway fighting at your side. May the spirit of Aureus watch over us from the Void."
>>
>>41639201
The nobles repeat "May the spirit of Aureus watch over us" in unison and cheerfully applaud. A moment later the king raises his hand, and all noise dies back down.

"Siegfried Schmidt, now that Galloway has sworn it's support, is there anything you would like to say to it's people?"

That's your cue to move forward and give your speech. You aren't able to carry the sheet you wrote your speech on with you, but you've spent time memorizing your speech in preparation for this. You step forward, clear your throat, and begin.

"People of Galloway, let me say now that I am grateful for your loyalty and support. We could not fight this crusade without your help. When I first became Champion, I would be lying if I said I felt honored. To me, the Forsaken Lands were far away and all their dangers didn't apply to me. When Galadriel chose me, I felt I had been forced into a position which I did not want. I hoped that one day, a better candidate for Champion would come along, and I could return to a safe, normal life in my home town."
>>
>>41639219
You pause, waiting for the murmuring to quiet down. "A while ago, Geoffrey Lione confronted me on this, and asked me if my thoughts had changed since then. I told him yes, my thoughts have changed since then, and the reason why was because of an instance where I was captured and brought to a mortal farm in Alastor's domain. No one knew who I was, thankfully, but while I was there I saw what was happening to the people who had been captured and brought there. I saw the people there, old or young, forced into an arena to fight to the death for Alastor's amusement. I saw a young boy, forced to battle some horrible mutant spawned by Alastor, beaten and nearly killed has I not intervened. I saw how everyone stayed aloof of each other, afraid to speak to anyone for fear that they may be forced to fight and kill them later. And I saw the resistance, formed under Alastor's nose, ready and willing to fight for their freedom, to return to their family and friends back home. I helped them escape, but there are many more people out their, stuck in the demons' mortal farms and forced to wait and hope that rescue will come. Shortly after, my own homecity was attacked in retaliation for the farm's liberation. We got there as quickly as we could, but many still died in the fighting."

You look out over the crowds. "The reason I'm sharing all this with you is because I don't want anyone to think the way I once did. So many people are afraid to fight the demons. They think that there's no reason to go to war, that it's best to stay here and do nothing. Those people haven't seen what it's like in the farms, or seen their homes destroyed and their neighbors killed by invading demons. I'm now fully committed to fighting and taking back the Forsaken Lands, to setting those trapped in the farms free and driving the demons back so they'll never attack our lands again. With your support, we may just be able to do that. Thank you."
>>
>>41639231
It's not the greatest speech in the world, but it's good enough in your opinion. Apparently others must think the same, because people clap for you upon completing your speech and returning to the others.

The king stands once again and silences the crowd. In his right hand is a glass of wine. "Thank you, Siegfried. We are also committed to taking back the Forsaken Lands and bring our lost people home. With this, the ceremony is concluded. Tomorrow, we prepare for war. But for tonight, let us celebrate. To Siegfried, and the brave men and women of the Watchtowers. Let us work together and finish the war we started so many years ago."

Others hold up their own glasses and toast, then the chatter rises once more. With the ceremony concluded, it's time for the celebration. Knight Captain Arnault takes a moment to shake your hand and congratulate you, then disappears in the thick crowd of people.

The center of the ballroom is full of people, either dancing or just passing through. Those who aren't dancing are still sitting at their tables, drinking wine and chatting with others. Many servants navigate through the crowds, carrying platters with food and wine. You see Ganelon standing guard by the ballroom doors, fully armored as usual. Galmar is standing guard with him too, while Logain is playing his lute along with a few other musicians Daniel and Joan are nowhere to be seen, and Celia and Geoffrey are busy talking to the king.
>>
>>41639248
Well, the ceremony's over so you're not obligated to stay here, but you imagine Daniel would prefer it if you did. What should you do now?

You half expect Erika to try and sneak away since Daniel's not here, but to your surprise she's still here, sitting at one of the tables. You almost don't recognize her without the armor. Currently, she's wearing a fancy green dress which you're sure one of the servants must have picked for her. Her arms are crossed and her eyebrows are furrowed in frustration, clearly she's not happy to be here at all. Maybe it's because she's so clearly unhappy that absolutely no one else is sitting at her table.

"No armor, no greatsword, you ARE Erika right? Or do I have the wrong person" You joke, taking a seat next to her.

"Ha ha, real funny." She says, not even trying to hide her annoyance.

"Just had to make sure. So, how's it feel to wear something that's not covered in metal for once?"

"Don't even get me started, I hate this damn thing." She complains

"Why? Might not be as protective as plate armor, but at least it looks nice."

"I don't care how it looks, I hate dresses. I tried talking Daniel into letting me wear a nice tunic or something, but he wouldn't hear it. Now I'm stuck wearing this fucking thing for the next few hours."

"Oh come on, it's not that bad."

"It is! Aureus, I just want to go back to my room and change. Maybe I should just sneak out, not like Daniel will know."

>"I'll admit, I'd rather not be here either. Alright, fine, let's both get out of here."
>"If it bothers you that much, then alright. Go ahead, I won't tell anyone."

Not saying that we should here in front of the entire nobility of an allied kingdom, but it isn't something we should avoid on principle.
>>
So after the party ends, anyone want to go and dance a bit with Galadriel?
>>
>>41640335
"Here, let's get some drinks. That might put you in a better mood."

You flag down one of the servants carrying wine, who then fills both of your glasses. The wine tastes different from what you're used to, not surprising considering this is wine from king's cellar and not the sort of watered down stuff you'd find in a normal tavern. You enjoy it, but Erika takes a quick drink and promptly spits it out in surprise.

"Ugh, the Void is this?"

"Pretty sure it's wine."

"I've had wine before, it tasted nothing like this crap. What's the deal?"

"Well for starters, you're probably thinking of that watered down wine people drink with meals from time to time. This isn't the same thing, it's more expensive and not watered down."

"Well the flavor's way too strong."

"That's because you drank it too quickly. You're supposed to savor it, not gulp it down like cheap ale."

She looks at the red liquid in her glass cautiously, then takes another sip, this one much slower. This time, she doesn't spit it out all over the tablecloth.

"Better?" You ask.

"I guess."

You both chat for a while, grab another glass of wine each, and then you decide it's best to call it there, just to be safe. It would be really bad if Erika got too drunk and started a fight with a nobleman, after all.

"So now what?" Erika complains, mood slightly better but still very much unhappy to be here.

"How about a dance?"

"No way. It's bad enough I have to wear a dress, no way I'm dancing like an idiot on top of that."

"Alright, if you think it'd be more fun to just sit here and sulk, that's fine by me."

Erika takes a moment to consider her options. For a second, you think she might choose to just sit here after all, but eventually she just sighs and stands up.

"Alright, fine. Breathe a word of this to anybody though, and I'll punch you till your black and blue."
>>
>>41640809
Dunno about dancing, but I'd be down for a celebratory drink.
>>
>>41640814
This girl really needs to learn to lighten up. Still, she's at least giving it a chance, so that's a start. You stand up, and walk out to the dance floor together.

"You remember what Daniel taught us?" You ask.

"Uh...sort of?"

"That's reassuring. Just don't step all over my feet, alright?"

You lead, following the steps Daniel and Roland taught you. Step, step, step, turn. Step, step, step, turn. Erika is slow and awkward at first, not knowing what to do, but little by little she start to pick up what she's supposed to do. Step, step, step, turn. Step, step, step, turn.

"I feel stupid." Erika grumbles.

"Everyone feels stupid when they dance. The point is to ignore it and enjoy yourself. Are you enjoying yourself?"

"...It's better than doing nothing I guess."

"I'll take that as a yes."

A couple more steps, a couple more turns. Finally, it seems Erika is starting to get the hang of it. Just as you're about to say so though, you notice something on the other side of the ballroom.

Currently, there is a large group of men surrounding someone. You can't hear what they're saying, but you'd guess they're trying to convince someone important to dance with them. A few feet away, you see Reinhardt glaring at the crowd of men, eyebrows furrowed and very clearly pissed off. Wait a minute, if Reinhardt's glaring at them...ah shit, here we go.

Looks like Reinhardt could use some help. Best to go over and check on him.

"Something wrong?" Erika asks.

"Just looks like Reinhardt's run into trouble. I'm gonna go check on him, mind coming with me?"

"No problem, what do you think is wrong?"

"I think I have an idea."

You both head over to Reinhardt, who doesn't notice you until you tap him on the shoulder.

"Hm? Oh, Siegfried, it's you."

"Yeah, it's me. What's wrong? I could see you glaring daggers at those guys from all the way over there."

"Was it that obvious? Shit, I'm sorry."

"Don't have to apologize to me, just tell me what's wrong."

Reinhardt sighs. "Well, I finally found a chance to go talk to Catherine, see if she wanted to dance, but right as I was about to ask, those guys started swarming over and pushed me out."

"So just tell them your busy talking to her and make them wait."

"I tried. Then the fatass there pushed me away and told me 'Oh I'm sorry, but we all have very important business with the princess. Please wait over there for a while, whatever you have to say I'm sure it can wait.'" Reinhardt says, mimicking what you suppose is the fat one's name. "Business my ass, they're all trying to make her dance with them. I'd have told him to fuck off, but I didn't want to get you in trouble by starting a fight with the nobles."

So Reinhardt got muscled out, huh? That wouldn't be a problem, if these guys weren't nobles and he had to watch what he said to them. You peak through the crowd at Catherine, who looks overwhelmed by all the people crowding around her.
>>
>>41641430
"...Why exactly are you trying to dance with the princess again?" Erika asks. "And since when did you start calling her Catherine."

"It's a long story. I'll explain later, just wait here. I think I can handle this."

You walk over to the crowd surrounding the princess and tap one of the suitors on the shoulder. He turns around, looking annoyed.

"I'm sorry, but you kindly just-Oh, pardon me Champion, I didn't realize it was you." He says, suddenly changing demeanors when he realizes who you are.

"It's fine. Would you all mind moving though? The king wants to see his daughter."

"...Oh, does he? Well, my apologies then, but if you would just give us another minute we'd-"

"Sorry, king wants to see her now. If it's important, you can go talk to the king and set something up."

A few of the suitors start to object, but think better of it. They move aside, letting the princess free to follow you back to Reinhardt and Erika.

"Reinhardt, would you do me a favor and guard her please? Just bring her back to the king and keep the suitors from bothering her when he leaves."

Reinhardt, realizing what you're trying to do, grins and nods. "Sure thing Siegfried, I'll keep them from bothering her."

"Thank you Reinhardt, Siegfried. I'll admit those people were starting to get a bit..." Catherine starts, trying not to insult them while still getting her point across.

"We understand, your majesty. Come on, I'll make sure they don't swarm around you like that."

With that, Reinhardt and the princess head towards the king, leaving the unhappy suitors to disperse and go about their business. With that little issue taken care of, you and Erika are able to go back to dancing.

"Back there, with Reinhardt and Princess Catherine..." Erika starts, a while after the incident. "Are Reinhardt and the princess uh...you know."

"Sort of. Don't worry, Reinhardt knows enough not to get himself in trouble. He's gonna have to deal with her grandfather at some point though."
>>
>>41641441
--------
Finally, the celebration is starting to wind down. Some of the nobles have gone off to sleep by now, though there are still plenty of people drinking, talking, or dancing here. After a while, Erika decides it's time for her to turn in as well.

"So, still as dreadful as you thought it would be?" You ask her.

"...Well, it wasn't awful at least. First thing I'm doing when I get back to my room is changing into some less stupid clothes and tossing this thing out though."

"I think the servants would prefer it if you just gave it back in that case. Anyways, glad you finally started enjoying yourself. Night."

Erika wishes you good night, then leaves through the ballroom doors. With nothing left to do, you decide to go check on Reinhardt and Catherine real quick then head to bed yourself. Upon getting close to the table where the king, Catherine, and Reinhardt are sitting, however, you notice a new person is standing there, speaking with the king. This person is old, somewhat short, and balding. What hair hasn't fallen out is grey with age.

"I'm sorry Gaston, but I'm telling you I don't think it's a good idea."

"Please your majesty. It was her last wish."

"I understand that, and I'm more than happy to give him the letter myself if you'll just hand it to me."

"I'm sorry your highness, but this is something I really feel I should do myself."

"You know what happened the last time you were together. I just don't think it's smart for you to go see him alone right now."

Sounds like the king's in some sort of predicament. You don't know what's going on, but you could step in and offer to help. Then again though, this sounds like something personal, maybe it's best not to get involved...

"Something wrong, your majesty?" You ask, walking up beside the old man.

"Siegfried? No, we were just...actually, it may be fortunate that you've shown up. Gaston, would you give us a moment to talk?"

The old man, Gaston, steps aside, does as the king says and waits by another table. The king also asks Princess Catherine and Reinhardt to leave for a bit as well, allowing you to talk in private.

"What's wrong?"

"It's a long story. Remember how I said someone Daniel cared very much about has recently passed away?"

"Yes?"

"Well the man over there, Gaston, has come to give something from her to Daniel. The problem there being, Daniel and Gaston are...not on very good terms. Gaston insists on seeing Daniel in person, but I fear what may happen if they should run into each other again, as well as how Daniel will react upon reading the letter that was left for him. I can't go with him because as king I need to be here, but I don't want to send him with a normal guard escort with him because even if that keeps the peace, I'd rather someone Daniel knows be there to console him. Would you do me a favor and go with Gaston, make sure they stay civil and make sure Daniel is alright?"

"Let me go get Erika first. She's sort of like a daughter to him, so it'll be easier to console him with her around."

"I see, that makes sense. Very well then, if you would go get Erika and take care of Daniel for me, then I would appreciate it greatly. He should be on the top floor, thank you very much for doing this for me."

--------
A while later, you Erika and Gaston are heading up the stairs towards the top floor of the palace. At first, Erika was annoyed when you came knocking on her door while she was trying to sleep, but after explaining the situation to her she quickly changed into a tunic and pants and followed after you.

For the longest time nothing is said between the three of you. You're not sure what to say to Gaston, nor does Erika, so most the the trip is spent in awkward silence.

"So you two are friends with Daniel?" Gaston says, finally breaking the long silence.

"Sort of. Daniel pretty much raised Erika, and he helped save my life at the Festival of Creation, so I'd say he is."

"I see." Another long pause. "Charlotte would have been happy to know Daniel had so many people close to him."

"Charlotte?"

"My wife, Void preserve her. She's the reason I came here to see him."
>>
>>41642366
Finally, you reach the top of the palace. It takes a while, but you finally find Daniel sitting on one of the palace balconies, looking up at the sky and holding an empty bottle.

"Daniel?"

Daniel perks up, turning his head toward the three of you. His eyes narrow when they settle on Gaston and he turns his head away, back to the night sky.

"It's been a long time, Daniel."

"...Not long enough, Gaston."

"I'm inclined to agree. You're wearing priest robes, you really joined the cloth after you left then?"

"No, I just happened to find these lying on the street and thought they looked comfy."

You're not sure what to think here. This is the first time you've ever seen Daniel, normally a very mild mannered man, act so cold and openly hostile towards someone.

"What brings you here? I thought you were wasting away from illness." Daniel asks.

"I got better. Thank Aureus I did, because while I was in bed someone told me an old man named Daniel was coming to the palace with the new Champion. Once I found out it was the same Daniel I started making plans to come down here as soon as I was better."

"Why bother?"

"To give you this." Gaston says, handing Daniel a sealed letter.

"What's this?" Daniel asks, taking the letter out of Gaston's shriveled hands.

"It's a letter. From Charlotte."

"From Charlotte?" Daniel asks, perking up just slightly.

"She wrote it just before she died. Her last wish was for me to give it to you if you ever showed up again." There's a long pause. "Even after you left, she never forgot about you. A shame you forgot about her."
>>
>>41642374
Daniel suddenly throws the empty bottle in his hands down, shattering it against the stone balcony floor. He jumps to his feet, glaring down at Gaston and balling his fists.

"I never forgot about Charlotte. I would NEVER forget about her!"

Calmly, Gaston cranes his neck to look up at Daniel. "Do you know what her biggest regret was when she passed? That she didn't get to see her best friend again before she died. If you had just told someone where you were going, she could have told you she was dying and seen her friend one last time."

Daniel falters a bit, shocked to hear what Gaston says. Gaston turns around, back towards the stairs.

"You have her letter now, so I'm going home. May our paths never cross again."

His letter delivered, Gaston leaves the three of you behind and starts walking down the stairs. Daniel stares after him, then slowly looks down at the letter in his hands. Without a word, he breaks the seal on the envelope and retrieves the letter inside. Nobody says anything while he reads. Finally, you see a sad smile form on Daniel's face and he sits back down.

"Are you alright?" Erika asks in a worried tone.

"Right now? No." Daniel says honestly. "But I will be, with time."

"What did the letter say? Who was Charlotte?" You asks, hoping you're not prodding him too soon.

A servant arrives, carrying two bottles of wine with her. Sensing the mood, she starts to leave before Daniel stops her, and takes the two bottles and a couple glasses from her.

"Care for a drink?" He asks, offering you both a glass

I'd feel like that's kinda violating Daniel's privacy though. If he want's to talk, let him talk, and if he doesn't, let him keep it to himself. Using Galadriel's knowledge from when she read his mind seems like cheating.

Um yeah. We can still ask Galardriel for advice.

Anyone want to bet that Joan told Avaline, we like men, and that we have an Unrequited crush on Reinhardt, in particular?

We should bribe Berry with berries to keep quiet and then smooch Joan in front of Aveline.

Since Aveline already awakened to her inner Fujoshi then we should awaken her to NTR as well.

I wonder what our dance with Erika will do to the rumours.

Also dat sly Joan. I wonder if she's interested herself.
>>
>>41643239

>>41643275
I'd rather smooch Joan in front of Aveline myself.

>>
>>41643275
Um.. Smooching Joan gets us rid of homosex rumors and an angry friend who could probably show some interest after that but would probably kick Sieg in the nuts.
>>
>>41642380
You wonder if maybe you should try taking the bottles away from him, but it's obvious Daniel is going through a lot right now, so instead you take the glass he offers you. Erika hesitates, but does the same. Daniel pulls a cork off one of the bottles, then pours you both some wine. For a second you wonder what he'll do since there are only two glasses. You get your answer when Daniel starts drinking directly from the bottle, setting the bottle down between you when he's done.

"So, I told you all I used to be Alain's bodyguard when I was young. Of course, I never told you what happened between then and when I became a priest."

He grabs the bottle and takes another sip before continuing. "It so happens that Alain had a younger sister at the time. Her name was Charlotte, and she was the reason I became Alain's bodyguard in the first place. She was...beautiful. I met her by chance while I was in Tarrin. The 24 Annual Tarrin Invitational Duel Tournament. I was given an invitation because one of the coordinators saw my performance in another tournament in Iseria. I ran into Charlotte just before the first round. Long brown hair, brown eyes, and a smile that could melt snow. Of course, I didn't know who she was at first, so it came as quite a shock when I learned she was from Galloway's royal family. I feared I'd never see her again once the tournament was over, but fortunately Alain's father was thoroughly impressed by my performance and offered me a position as his son's bodyguard."
>>
>>41643292
I'd rather smooch Alastor in front of Lilith tbh, but I guess your plan is good to.
>>
>>41643322
He points into the palace, towards the portrait sitting on the wall opposite the balcony door. "That's her portrait. I was there when they painted it. Anyways, I took the job. Alain and I became close friends during that time, I saved his life twice while I was there. Charlotte and I also became close, but there was a problem. That man you just saw, Gaston. His father and Alain's father organized a betrothal between Charlotte and Gaston. I didn't find for a very long time. When I did, I immediately turned to Alain for help. He did the best he could, but there was nothing we could do. Not because they were already betrothed, but because Charlotte already loved Gaston."

Daniel offers you the bottle, but you turn him down. Erika does the same. "Charlotte already fell in love with Gaston before I even came along. I thought she saw me as something more, but the truth was I was only ever a very close friend. But I didn't know any of this, not yet. Alain hadn't known either. Gaston, however, had pieced together my feelings for Charlotte and was very unhappy. He confronted me one day, and things became heated. Finally, I challenged him to a duel. The winner would gain Charlotte's hand. Gaston was a fairly talented duelist himself, but I won. Beat him bloody in the process too, I think I broken one of his bones at some point during the duel. It was right as I won and held him at sword point that Charlotte came in."

You see Daniel hang his head in shame. "She immediately ran to Gaston's side. She cried, screamed for a healer, demanded me to explain what happened. I told her everything, that I loved her and we fought each other for her hand. That was when I learned how she felt about him. 'Get out, don't come near me ever again' she said. I walked out of there with a black eye, a bloody nose, one dislocated finger and a broken heart."
>>
>>41643275
>>41643292
I'd rather kiss them both on the lips and then tell both of them that they make a really cute couple together, then say that we probably misread the signs all embarrassed-like when they deny it, and finally just scurry off somewhere else to let them talk together.
>>
>>41643341
Daniel reaches for the bottle, takes one last sip, then puts the cork back on and sets it aside. "I left the palace that night. I told Alain I was going back to Iseria, but not where I was going. I wasn't sure myself at the time. I was sure Charlotte hated me then, and I certainly knew her heart lied with Gaston, so I felt it was best I leave. Walked all the way back to Iseria, never looked back. I knew I'd never find someone else, so finally I decided to give up dueling and became a priest. Learned how to use magic, had my sword placed into my staff and had it made into my Foci. Church life proved too dull, so I enlisted at the White Watchtower. Eventually I met Erika and brought her back to the watchtower, then she grew up and a few years later, we both met you Siegfried."

Daniel offers you two the bottle one last time, then sets it aside when you both refuse. "I never did forget about Charlotte though. Remember when I said I transferred squads so I could accompany you all into Galloway and Belmore? The reason why was because I was hoping I'd see Charlotte again, have a chance to apologize and make amends. But of course, she died of illness a year before I came here, and I never knew. Then Gaston shows up with this letter."

Daniel holds up the letter for you both to see. "She wrote this just a week before she passed. Amongst other things, she says she wishes she could take back what she said. Even at the end of her life her heart still belonged to Gaston, but here she tells me she still considered me a friend, and wishes she could have seen me one last time."

Daniel folds the letter up, stuffs it back into it's envelope, then sets it aside. You can see tears start to form in the old man's eyes, as he looks over at the portrait of Charlotte and back to the envelope.

"I had no idea." Erika says softly. She moves closer, and gives Daniel a hug. He accepts it, and you can hear him start to sniffle.
>>
>>41643362
"How unbecoming of me, weighing down the youth with my problems and crying in front of them."

"Don't worry about it Daniel, just let it out." Erika tells him. They sit there like that for a while longer, before Daniel finally starts to calm. They separate and Daniel clears his eyes, red and puffy from crying.

"Thank you, both of you. I expected to spend the whole evening up here by myself, save for these bottles of wine."

"Don't worry about it Daniel, I'm glad you told us everything." You tell him.

"Yes, well, thanks for listening. I think talking to you both about it really helped. But look at the time, it's getting late. You should both head to bed, we start traveling back to the Red Watchtower tomorrow."

"What about you?"

"I think I'll be up just a while longer. I need time to think. Go on ahead without me, I'll head to be shortly."

With Daniel now calmed down, you and Erika stand up and start heading down the hallway. Just as you reach the hallway, Daniel calls you back.

"Hold on, Siegfried, could I ask you something before you go?"
>>
>>41643303
What? Who'd kick who over this?
Avaline was a mildly creepy fangirl, and Joan did a prank that could be seen as a scheme, but neither of these really warrant violence.
>>
>>41643372
You turn back, meeting Daniel on the balcony once more. "What's on your mind?"

"I'm no fool, I know I'm long out of my prime and I would only slow you down were I in your honor guard. But if there's anything I can do to assist you or the others, anything at all, please let me know."

"I will, Daniel."

"And one last thing. When the Crusade starts, you and everyone on the honor guard will face grave danger on the battlefield. I won't be able to join you on the battlefield most of the time but please, watch over Erika in my place. Make sure she stays safe. She's like a grandaughter to me, I couldn't stand it if something were to happen to her."

"I will Daniel, I promise."

Daniel smiles. "Thank you Siegfried, you're a good man. Here, take this. It's not much, but booze can do wonders when things get rough. Just make sure you have someone there to share the bottle and the burden with."

You take the unopened bottle of wine from Daniel, and head back to the staircase. You had no idea Daniel was hiding something like that, but you're glad he shared it with you and Erika.

'I'm glad Daniel opened up to you two. That man has kept a lot of secrets for a very long time.' Galadriel says

'You knew?'

'A long time ago, Daniel also tried to become my Champion. I saw all his memories at that time, but I never said anything. People are entitled to their secrets, it's up to them whether they choose to share them with anyone or not.'

You look back up the stairs. 'Do you think Daniel will be alright?'

'He will, just give him time. Come on, our trip back to the watchtower starts tomorrow, like Daniel said. Go get some sleep, we have a long journey ahead of us.'
>>

It wasn't really quiet acceptance, it was more like "This is a reeeeeaaaaaally bad idea, but if you're absolutely sure, then I won't stop you. I can't guarantee I this won't hurt though."
