It's essentially an unconscious reaction- Somewhere, shrouded in your soul's despair, you know only one being could have done this.

You haul the giggling moth off your back, dangling her carefully by her shoulders, shaking her back and forth in desperation as you cry out-

"What did you do? WHAT DID YOU DOOOOO-"
Nin, for her own part, is laughing so hard that she's crying, wheezing and panting and generally trying to get enough air in her lungs to fuel another cackle.

And you- You are definitely not crying, at all. Maybe just a little teary-eyed and panic-y. But you aren't crying.

"NiiiiIiiIIIN!"
"-Ahaaaaa haaa- Heee-"

You give her another shake for good measure.
"What did you doooooo-"
"Um-"
"Heehehe- Nothing! Hah! I haven't done anything! It's all you! AhAHAHAHAA-"

There's a sudden and sharp clap that immediately draws your attention away from the gloating moth, and back to the secretary.
"Excuse me. I understand I might be interrupting something private, but- There is still the matter of the wagon and the invitation, if you don't mind?"
You stare a moment, sniffle, and return the moth to the floor.
"It is urgent, apparently, though I haven't any details for you. My apologies."

You puff your cheeks as you let out another breath, barely keeping any hissing and clicking in check.

"You do not know what this is about, either?"
The secretary shrugs, flipping the message around to show you-

To say it was short would be doing it a vast disservice. The note practically conveys a military terseness-
ARCHNE PRESNCE REQUIRED. IMMEDIATE NOTICE. A.D.

"What."
"The city's rulers are military men, Miss Lyra. The Archduke... doesn't waste time when he fells something is necessary."
"He doesn't waste letters either, yes."
She snorts at that, returning the note to her pile of work, lips almost twitching upwards.
"I worked with the scouts for a while myself. You'll only see proper writing if you're in trouble so deep that you're about to be buried."

"I see. Then this... isn't serious?"
"Well, there is a wagon outside with horses riled up and ready to race you to the castle, so I'd say it's fairly serious. You aren't in trouble or anything, though."
"That is good. I arrived yesterday, I am thinking that I have not had time to cause trouble, yes."

She shrugs.
"Then- What about my friends? And clothes? Should I wear something special? I do not know anything about royalty."
"You're an adventurer. A tabard is likely fine, he'd understand. Your friends, though- The message was just for you."
"I cannot bring them?"
"He writes what he means, miss."

You sigh.

You move to tug your hair back, throw it behind your ear- But Nin is already there and working, humming cheerily as she braids it, drawing the absurd waist-length mass together.

You're cornered in all sorts of ways, aren't you?
You could probably wriggle your way out with a refusal, you suppose. Archwhatever or not, you're a monster and an adventurer, and you owe noone any fealty. Of course, that might see you booted from the city. Which would make travel that much more difficult. And you haven't even seen the shops yet. Or any restaurants.

You sigh lightly, and obediently tilt your head so Nin can finish the braid.

"Alright, yes."
"Hm?"
"I'll go. They are waiting outside?"
"They have a spider sized wagon and a team of soldiers waiting for you. Can't miss them."
"Mhm."

Nin claps softly, excited and giddy and probably about to cause all sorts of trouble.

"Please keep an eye on my friends, yes? And-"
You snag the moth again, bringing her eye to eye with you.
"-If you are somehow involved in all- all this, I will have my revenge, yes."
She grins, antennae flopping even as her cheeks rise with her lips.
"I don't even need to do anything, anymore! You've already gone and started things all on your own!"

The secretary leads you down the stairs even as your herald waves her goodbyes, Ezzy secure around her neck as she cheers you on.

Gods.

Soldiers snap into salutes as you exit the building- No, as the secretary does.
You're going to find out just who she is at some point this week, if only to sate your growing curiousity.
>>
>>41711889
I don't really want to have to fight all the bounty hunters Elle would send after our literal ass.
>>
>>41711904

Maybe you can even put Nin to work for once.

The wagon has a set of reinforced steps, and you get in easily enough- A pair of soldiers preceding you, and another pair behind you, drawing the coverings closed.

The wagon rumbles as it heads off, wheels bouncing lightly against cobblestone, horses straining to start pulling your weight.
You'd be insulted that you only warranted four soldiers, but they're all watching outwards, rather than inwards- Guarding you instead of guarding you.

You really aren't sure what is going on, at this point.
>>
>>41711922

The morning air is cool, the sun not yet breaking over the city walls- and the proximity to the river keeping the breeze sharp. You wonder if it freezes, come winter. Or if you're too far south, even now- It certainly seems temperate enough.

Your wandering mind comes back to rest as the reins jingle, a soft 'Woah' audible even from within the wagon. Gravel crunches beneath the wheels as your vehicle slows, and the soldiers are moving with military precision in seconds, the first pair out the back as it rolls to a stop, the steps in place almost immediately.

You descend, and decide you're fairly impressed with the castle. Mansion. Thing.

It looks like an older style government building- Massive, tall, and flat. Tremendous double doors, lamps everywhere. Is it the centre of the city, or built into a wall? Maybe you can ask someone after.

The second set of your guards are behind you, and they form up around you, escorting you to the entrance, where one raps the giant metal knocker smartly.

"Guest for the Archduke."
There's a moment of silence, and the door glows for a split second before an answer snaps back.
"Rejected. Are you even doing your job? Check assassins properly before you drag them into the manse."
"Sir?"
You raise an eyebrow.

"The wards have detected eighteen separate bladed weapons, as well as poison. There is a limit to incompetence, soldier."
Once of the soldiers glances back at you for a moment, confused- And you wriggle your fingers at him, prompting a split second break in his guard persona, the young man looking away before he laughs.

"Why are you still at the door, soldier?"
"Sir, the guest in question is an Arachne. She is made of bladed weapons, and is undoubtedly poisonous. However, the Archduke is most certainly aware of these, and has requested her presence regardless."
>>
>>41711942

There's another long stretch of silence before the door grinds open, slabs of wood swinging open and revealing the warm light within.
The soldiers salute an older man at the side of the door, short gray hair and a trimmed beard, standing in full armour with an axe the size of your torso close at hand.

The doors swing shut behind you, the solid clunk of a lock engaging even as you scan the room.

A pair of maids are waiting at the bottom of a staircase, half-bowed before you've even reached them.
"Follow us, please. We'll take you to see the Archduke."

They turn without waiting, already ascending the stairs.

Okay, so, since I just got here I had somethings I wanted to suggest and talk about.

FIRST: We need to go crawling on the side of the bridge to see the waterfalls, and along the side of buildings in general.

Second: I have compiled a short list of weaknesses for us. In order of threat level:

A. darksouls. If some guy can try again and again against us, he's bound to get lucky eventually.
B. ghosts. There's a high chance that ghosts exist that are not propped up by necromantic magics. Even if there are not, there is not much we can do with our spellbreaking against a full beetlejuice scenario.
C. infection. Spider bodies do not have appropriate blood filtration systems, meaning it's only our elf body and out internal heat that are killing infections for us. Any heat-adapted disease is going to give us major trouble.
and, finally,
D. The mobile infantry. They know the only good bug is a dead bug, and the roughnecks are especially dangerous. Thankfully, this one will only occur if we somehow make it back to science fiction land.

>C. infection. Spider bodies do not have appropriate blood filtration systems, meaning it's only our elf body and out internal heat that are killing infections for us. Any heat-adapted disease is going to give us major trouble.
We're in magic land a powerful biomancer could seriously mess us up
>>
>>41712351
The scanner probably ignores teeth, since everyone has them, and there are probably some more common monsters with fangs in the city.
>>
>>41712351
>>41712311
I'm just surprised our legs count as bladed weapons.
I thought they were more piercing, myself.
>>
>>41712326
C: is a none concern anyway, since most diseases can not survive being boiled alive in a uber heated body.
>>
>>41712351
That raises an interesting point: apparently their wards don't pick up magic at all.

Also, did we leave our spear with our friends or did it miss that too.
>>
>>41712407
You would probably worry about a piercing dagger too when it comes to assassination.
The ward seems fairly basic, so it probably just counts "can cut shit".
>>
>>41712422
not until we catch the magmaman cold or whatever.
>>
>>41712326
I don't think infection is that bad. There are very few harmful bacteria which can survive furnace temperatures, and we have a moth who dispenses antibiotics/magic healing dust as a matter of course.
>>
>>41712437
Well, we kinda cheat with magic on most fronts anyway
>>
>>41712461
well, it is 3rd behind the beetlejuice cascade scenario.
>>
>>41712437
To be fair, elemental powers are distinct from magic and Lyra's spell-manipulation may or may not be REALLY out there.
>>
>>41712326
>A. darksouls. If some guy can try again and again against us, he's bound to get lucky eventually.
I know just the solution. It even fits the "fiery tyrant" theme.
spam Black Flame.
>>
>>41712437
>Also, did we leave our spear with our friends or did it miss that too.
Bringing non-built-in weapons for the meeting is kinda rude so yeah we obviously left it at the guild.
>>
>>41712487
Or bury him up to his neck and leave him.
>>
>>41712462
>>41712479
Did it detect our magic stone? By conventional logic a device designed to accumulate mana without directing it would probably be a grenade, since the function we use it for is pretty much unique.
>>
>>41712549
As far as I understand it, our stone is a curiosity at worst. It doesn't have any sort of triggering enchantments and only holds energy. To anyone else its worthless. Like a battery with no output.
>>
>>41712521
Or wrap him up to a rock and drop him a few miles offshore.
Or fling him into a pit.
Or trap him in a cave-in.
Or chain him to a rock atop a mountain (liver-eating eagle harpies optional)
Or just keep killing him until he goes too hollow to effectively track you.

Really there's lots of ways to deal with a DS-style undead.
>>
>>41712549
It doesn't seem to pick up magic, which seems like a problem but its not like a mage can leave it at the door either and enchantments would need to be on the weapon as far as we know.

Did Lyra even bring her magic stone?

>>41712617
>To anyone else its worthless. Like a battery with no output.
The folks I know would consider that a challenge.
>>
>>41712617
"A battery with no output" makes for a surprisingly effective explosive, if you do it right. I'd be very surprised if no dickass wizard has thought of putting mana-collecting enchantments on some rocks or something as a weapon.
>>
>>41712645
>The folks I know would consider that a challenge.
What would be the challenge here? It fulfils its intended purpose and the only people who can use it are mages who can already blow things up.
>>
>>41712645
>Did Lyra even bring her magic stone?
Do we go anywhere without it? That seems like the sort of thing you just always keep on you.
>>
>>41712645
Well they can try, but enchanting has been around forever and Dad dismissed the stone idea before thinking of our mana draining.

We are weird as hell. So it might be useful in some other task.. But not too likely.
>>
>>41712689
>What would be the challenge here?
Finding a way to get useful output from the outputless battery. There's an electrical engineer two dorm rooms over who'd likely jump at the chance to dick around with something like that.
>>
>>41712689
>the only people who can use it are mages
No, the only people who can MAKE them are mages. Anybody can use them.

And the mage could make them very, very easily. Remember, literally the only part of making our stone that took effort from our dad was keeping it from exploding. Magic just seems really prone to kabooms all over the place at very low skill levels, and that's an enticing prospect for all sorts of shady types.
>>
>>41712736
>Finding a way to get useful output from the outputless battery.
We already have a way, so challenged solved I guess.
>>
>>41712618
>Hordes of chained up soul eating zombies cast into the most remote locations on the planet.
Whelp, looks like we're the cause of some future civ's creepy pasta. I'm sure there will be all sorts of rumors about "The Chained Ones" who take you to become one of them if you venture too close.
>>
>>41712736
>There's an electrical engineer two dorm rooms over who'd likely jump at the chance to dick around with something like that.
RL outputless battery would be a sphere with acid inside and a metal bearing at the center.

Soo you would need to drive a needle sheathed in isolation to the core to get the second contact.
>>
>>41712763
>Anybody can use them.
Not at all, you need ti be bale to manipulate mana to make it go over the critical mass or blow it up, otherwise its just a innert power source. You would need to trigger it, which you can't if you can't either manipulate the enchantment or the mana, both needs you being a mage.
If you make it overload with mana until explosion its more likely to blow the user up than anything else.
>>
Somebody having SKILL for magic or passive blessings is probably harder to detect than physical objects of specific shape and material.

I do not doubt the castle is enveloped in enchantments to detect any active magic. They probably catch elemental stones as well.
>>
>>41712851
You probably could make a stone that would accumulate magic /without stopping/ leading to eventual kaboom. Hell that probably was the flaw in early versions of our stone.
>>
>>41712851
>innert power source
I hope you realize that's an oxymoron.

And no, they don't need to manipulate mana to make a rock enchanted to gather mana explode. It will explode on its own as soon as it collects more mana than the rock can safely store. OUR stone doesn't do that because it was enchanted with a pressure release that stops collection once the stone is saturated, which is a far more difficult enchantment then just collecting mana.
>>
>>41712763
>Remember, literally the only part of making our stone that took effort from our dad was keeping it from exploding.
Yeah and you don't want a granade to blow up most of the time either, especially not right after making it, so its the same issue.
>>
Sarah was researching enchantments based on our mana manipulation... It would be interesting what might come of that.

In setting equipment that reflects magic?
>>
>>41712913
>>41712937
You guys don't at all see the problem with a granade that can only last a limited amount of time after making until it inevitably blows up?
>>
>>41712942
>>41712942
You just make a bunch shortly before visit and then drop them all over the place.

Boom, terror tactics.
>>
>>41712980
There's a question there. Something strong enough to explode might be deteced, while something smaller with a magic timer might be as well.
>>
>>41712974
Do mana-blocking materials exist? If so you could store them in a box of such until they're needed.

Or you make the stone of a certain size/material to effectively set the "fuse" of it. A pebble might overcharge and explode in a minute, while a brick of iron or something might take an hour to reach that point. You'd just enchant it, hide it in place (or send it off with an unwitting servant), and wait. Magic IEDs.
>>
>>41713037
Well like I'm saying >>41712878 they probably DO detect active magic shit in the castle. Still, terror bombs could be a thing.
>>
I wonder if the local leaders have had many assassination attempts recently.
>>
>>41713103
Did the crystal gather from ambient mana? As far as I remember we needed to get it recharged by Dad and Sara.
>>
>>41713217
It does, takes a few days if drained heavily, I think
>>
>>41713217
I think that was one of the features, or at least it was a feature of the previous defects.

It's just slow.
>>
>>41713217
There were two crystal options. One of them held 10 charges but needed a mage to recharge it. The other only holds 2 charges but recharges from ambient automatically.

We chose the latter.
>>
>>41713217
No, that was our other option when dad was making them. Our options were "Large capacity, mage required to charge" or "Low capacity, self-charging." We picked the latter.
>>
You cough lightly, barely louder than the clicking of your limbs as you follow along- up stairs, down hallways, around twisting corners-

"I do not suppose someone knows why I am here, yes?"

One of the maids glances over her shoulder, inclining her head towards in something resembling an apology.
"I am afraid we are not privy to our master's thoughts, Miss. However, he will soon be able to tell you himself."

You nod, following along through the halls- Some are littered with huge portraits of scenes of battle, others have windows wide enough that even you could fit through. Doors and rooms are everywhere- some open, busily attended to by other maids, others closed- probably locked, given that you can even smell the dust emanating from a few.

It's another pair of corners before you're lead towards a door-
You're not sure if it's just you, or the builders, or what, but every door in the building seems gigantic.
Maybe it was built by giants? Are giants a thing? Giants seem like they would be a thing.

One maid enters, alone, and your ears pick up the softest of murmurs befoe the door swings all the way open, and you're invite inside.

The Archduke- You assume, anyway- is seated on a rather nice looking couch, a glass short table before him, cup and saucer in hand. He looks- Well, he looks old, but in a way that reminds you of a statue, rather than a senior citizen. Like he'd become stone rather than senile.

His face is sharp looking, a fancy eye-patch over one scarred socket, beard trimmed but moustache grown, his head mostly shaved around his balding plate.

Soldiers take position at the door, and outside it, and one maid busies herself with a tea-set in the corner while the other escorts you to a giant pile of cushions.
That's pretty nice, actually.
>>
>>41713269
"Good evening, Miss.... Lyra, was it?"
A maid leans over his shoulder, whispering.

He nods once, though his expression doesn't change.
"Good morning, rather. It's been a busy few days, I'm afraid. Do you drink tea?"

You've lowered yourself into the cushion pile. And have already decided that you will be making your own, or buying your own, or stealing all of these. Sitting like this is nice.
"Ah- I have not tried it before, yes. And- er- I do not know any etiquette. Or your name."

He laughs loudly, moustache bristling, setting his tea back on the table as he chuckles.

"Darius. The third, technically, but please leave it out. As for etiquette- I am a soldier first, and the governor second. It isn't a concern. Ah, Jae- Bring her something a little less bitter. Something that will help wake her up- There's a few things we need to speak on."

Jae- The leading maid, apparently- Shakes her head.
"Water, juice, or something in that vein- Arachne seem to get drunk on tea, sir."
"Hah? Truly? Coffee, then."
"They get drunk on that as well, sir."

He looks back to you with a frown.
"That is all sorts of pitiable. My apologies, Miss."

"Well, that is fine, yes? More importantly, I would like to know why I have been called, please."
"Of course."
He folds his hands, squaring his shoulders as he sits straighter.
He coughs once, clearing his throat, and then he starts.

"Primarily, I'd like your presence this afternoon for a... diplomatic meeting, of sorts."
You freeze.

"Er- No matter what you have heard from moths, I cannot represent the forest, yes?"
He blinks.
"Moths?"
"No? Then it is nothing to worry about. But still..."

He waves it off.
"Ah, I know that, of course. There's the agreements with the forest in general, but there's no formal leaders anymore."
You nod along.
"In any case- There's a variety of delegations coming for the afternoon, and among them, the southern city."

You raise your eyebrows, and he almost lets out a small giggle.
"They still call themselves the 'Human Empire', even now. Well, they're trying to re-establish themselves with trade and the like- a few centuries of solitude seems to have left their merchants champing at the bit. So now we have to deal with them strutting about like idiots who think they didn't bring about the downfall of the entire continent."
"I... see?"
"Mm. There's a saying- That if your opponents are offbalance, then it's that much easier to push them to where you want them. And it applies to diplomacy as much as any traditional warfare."

"So you want me to stand about and be as spider-like as possible."
"I want to see that smarmy little asskisser shit himself in front of a spider!"
"Diplomacy, sir." The maid murmurs.

He coughs again.
"Thank you, Jae. In essence, I felt that highlighting our current ties to the forest- what few we have, anyway- would put them off, and hopefully make my life that much easier."

This isn't a public setting. It's a private audience between the duke and an insular and widely disliked group of preachy outsiders. Anything they say afterwards is likely to be ignored as a bigot's raving. "Oh, they say the spider was blaspheming the gods, saying she's blessed? Of course they would, by their standards she's blasphemous by existing. She probably just said grace before eating and they threw it out of proportion, the gits."
>>
>>41714869
There is literally no reason to tell them where we got our various blessings from and it's not like anyone can actually tell which abilities are "natural" and which come from blessings.

The fact that the ability to use magic and lots of other obviously supernatural abilities are clearly divorced from Blessings makes it impossible to just deduce which is a Blessing and which isn't.

And the fact that Arachne are rare as fuck and Tier 4s even more so just seals the deal, because that means there are going to be fuck all records for them to consult.

The adventurers didn't even know about tinysneks for heaven's sake.
Noone is going to finger our blessings unless we tell someone about them.

That would be quite a shocker for our enemies.

Why do you think she takes it so seriously?
She's told us a dozen times, Lyra just didn't realize she was capitalizing Herald.
>>
>>41715035
Or we could just keep a bunch of metal ingots on our person and throw them at people in molten form. Molten metal operates similarly to napalm, it sticks to things and will keep sizzling into whatever it gets on. If it gets on skin it would be agonizingly painful, probably enough to incapacitate somebody.

Booo
>>
>>41715085
Nah. We could just throw molten stone if that was all we wanted to do. The point is the shape and control, not just getting slapped with hot goop.

Hm.

"Well- Not that I mind, yes. But I do have some questions?"
The Archduke gestures with his teacup for you to continue, settling back into his seat, the couch creaking.
"To start- You said a variety of delegations? So not just the idiots, then?"
He nods.

"A few of the smaller cities have sent people. I believe even the dwarves have someone in town for this?"
His maid confirms it with a nod.
You can't help but feel apprehensive.
"Is this... actually a big thing?"

He shrugs in turn, sipping noisily at his tea.
"It isn't small, I suppose. But there won't be any business today- Just showing off, introductions and the like."
"I see. I do not really have any appropriate clothing, yes."
"Nothing fancy?"
"Well, there is- No, nevermind. I am not wearing that."

"So there is something?"
"It is a wedding dress."
He looks momentarily confused.
"Why do you have a-"
"My sister likes to weave and sew. A little too much."
"But a wedding dress?"
"A lot too much."

"Well, what do you have?"
"Er- A pile of tabards and tunics, a summer dress. Armour. Chitin armour."
"Chitin armour?"
"I can make the stuff on my arms cover my body, yes."
>>
>>41715361
This is something I've thought about before, actually. If Lyra thought someone she was talking to might be re-incarnated, what sort of hints/quotes might she drop and check their reactions?
>>
>>41715653

"Sounds helpful."
"I have not tried it yet. It is hard to get things to fight me without sneaking up on them."
He laughs.
"Well, We can get someone to fit a dress to you- it'll be a bit of a rush, though."
"That is fine, yes. I do not have to wear a crown or anything, do I?"

"Do you own a crown?"
"Technically no?"
"I won't ask."
"Thank you."

He finishes his drink, and the maid takes his cup directly, scooping up the saucer and removing both to the corner.
"Is there any other questions?"
"Hmm- Can I bring my friends?"
"It would be better if you didn't, I think. I'd like just one representative from the forest present. Let them think there's still a queen."
"I see. Will there be food?"
"There's usually small fare at these sorts of things- though I don't suppose that will suffice?"

"I am afraid that snacks for humans is not enough to make a dent in my appetite, yes."
"I'll see about something, then."
The maid whispers beside him again, leaning down.

"Bloody- Already? Gods."
He turns back to you as he stands, brushing absent-mindedly at his pants.
"I'm afraid our mutual friends have arrived early- I'll have the maids see to your clothing, if that's not an issue. Do you have any last-minute questions?"

Nah, I don't thinkl he wants to outright lie. he wants them to assume that there is one, if it would be brought up directly it would just make the ruse fall apart.
Besides its more fun to let them draw all the wrong conclusions from technical truth.

It's too bad we can't have Nin announce us. That's a thing at this sort of meetings, right? A herald announces everyone attending? I can just picture it now. You shrug.
"Lyra Niallasdottir. Or Lyra of Firescarn. Or of the forest, Maybe. Any of those is fine."

He half turns from his position at the door.
"Firescarn? From the isle?"
"My father is an elf, yes."
"Huh. We'll stick to the others, I think. It's mostly about keeping the forest in their faces."
"That is fine, yes. Hm. What about an honour guard?"

He laughs.
"An honour guard of what?"
"Harpy and wolf, maybe."
"No moth?"
"The moth would attack your bard, declare herself my herald, and attempt to declare a books worth of false titles before she passed out from a lack of air."
"We'll just leave it with just you, then."
"Alright."

He leaves, and a maid escorts you down a hall.

You're set up atop a small army of stools, and then a very large army of maids gets to work.

A brief aside on the topic of our new metallic silk while we wait:

It's properties really haven't been addressed yet, but spider silk is already, pound for pound, many times stronger than the best steel ever made. Adding in any sort of metal would be like trying to make an aerospace alloy stronger with the addition of wet sand. Did this evolution give us a flat downgrade by giving us heavier, less flexible, weaker silk?
>>
>>41717819
we can still produce non-metallic silk.
The metal stuff has properties we are uncertain of. It seems much stiffer, for one.
>>
>>41717819
It could be some sort of magical fantasy metal. Mithril or something.

Actual spider silk sized up to Lyras dimensions would not be as good as it is in regular spider scale to begin with.

>>
>>41717819
It's stronger because reasons.

And it has the benefit of letting us use our metal control on it to do stupid monowire bullshit.
>>
>>41717819
I would guess that it could be useful in the same way that wire is useful. Such uses include the things used to hold out poofy dresses and the support in bras... I'm sure there are mechanical uses as well...

>>41717873
I am not sure I follow. How does scaling it up cause the material to become weaker?

The limiting factor with spider silk is generally considered to be how hard it is to make in any significant quantity, not its lack of applicable uses.
>>
Well, you were promised food.

You make your way to the far wall, scanning the tables for something appropriately spider-sized- There's a table covered in trays of slices of heavy looking bread, topped with meats and cheeses. And then there's a table with the better part of a dead deer atop it, so you'll assume that one was meant for you.

Though the dwarves have likewise abandoned stupid tiny sandwiches in favour of roasted game.
Truly, kindred spirits.

You restrain yourself a little, settling with just the beast's leg, and approach the dwarves.

"Hello, yes. I am Lyra, though I'm afraid I did not get to hear your names."
"Good afternoon, Miss. I'm Stefan, and this is Herbert." "Just Herb, please."
"Nice to meet you both."

The both nod- Stefan, apparently the one leading this, is heavily bearded. A classical dwarf, if you will. Herb has a moustache that looks like it could attack someone all on its own.

"Wasn't aware the duke'd gone and made contacts in the forest. Though I suppose it's one way to one up everyone."
"Is that a problem of some sort?"
"Nothing like that," Herb interrupts. "Stefan is just bitter 'cause he didn't do it first."
"I see. May I ask about your jobs? Or is that rude, yes? I am very new to this."

The rest of this is inside the new thread!
