You are Leo, the new mayor of a coastal town known as Whiteport. Thus far you’ve bought a house, done some city planning, and discovered your own ridiculous affinity for Earth Magic. Now, you’ve realized that you’re going to need some source of Bells if you want to survive, and are doing a delivery job for Nook.

Town Map: http://i.imgur.com/d0k6c25.png

Leo’s Stats and Inventory: http://pastebin.com/icbFDUjA

--------

Stepping into the smithy, you notice the heat the furnace is generating. Especially in the middle of summer, this room is hot and dry. You suppose Flint is probably used to it, though. Soon, you notice a door to a back room, standing ajar. “Flint?” you call, but there’s no response.

As you open the door, you feel a sudden draft of heat and, looking up, you notice a stream of flame, rushing straight towards you!

You move to dodge, but suddenly a figure is standing before you, taking the flames. After a moment, the heat dies down, and you look up to see that the figure is Flint.

“Are you alright, Mayor?” he asks.

You shake your head to clear the confusion. “I’m fine. What… was that?”

Flint seems surprised at your question. “I was doing some work for that lamp post you asked for. Building screws is a bit difficult to do on the forge.” He suddenly narrows his eyes at you. “What were you doing back here anyways? You could have been hurt.”

“Oh yeah,” you say, as you remember your purpose. “I’ve got a package from Tam for you. Also... I guess I was wondering if you had any work I could do for you?”

Flint takes the package. “Well, do you have any experience working in a forge?”

You shake your head. “No, I don’t.”

“Well then, I don’t think there’s much work I could give you,” Flint says. “Next time, why don’t you just wait outside, alright?”

You nod, leaving the forge. It looks like that's a dead end.

What will you do now?

>Hold on, you still have something to talk to Flint about!
>Head back to Nook's to report a job well done.

As always, there will be a 20 minute voting period after every post, but if you just barely miss the voting window, I'll probably still count it.

For newcomers, this quest is based on Animal Crossing with elements of Rune Factory, with original characters and magic.

Whenever there's a roll necessary, I will take the best of the first 3 rolls, with Critical Failures overriding higher values, but Critical Successes overriding Critical Failures.

Well, at the very least, you got the package delivered to Flint, so that’s something.

It’s not until you’re heading back to Nook’s that you remember that you could have just used your Earth Magic to detect where Flint was. Your shoes are beginning to feel more and more like you’re deliberately blinding yourself. You feel like it would be a bit difficult to explain why you’re suddenly not wearing shoes, though. Hmm.

Back at Nook’s Cranny, Tam seems to be organizing the goods on her shelves. You aren’t exactly sure what most of the things around her store are, but you can at least recognize the record player and bed near the back, as well as the fishing pole and bug net closer to the front.

“So you return,” Tam says as you enter. “Good, good. I trust Flint received the package undamaged, yes?”

You think back to the wave of fire you were almost hit by, but luckily you didn’t drop the package. “Yeah,” you say, simply. There’s no need to go into details.

Tam nods. “Good, good. Well then, in return for this work, I can either reduce your housing debt by 500 Bells, or you may select one of the items from my clearance shelf. Perhaps you can put those items to good use, yes?”

You look over to the clearance shelf, which turns out to be the shelf you saw near the front. In addition to the Bug Net and Fishing Rod, you can now also see a Watering Can, a Shovel, a Gardening Hoe, a Cooking Pot, and a Hammer of some sort.

“Well, which would you like?”

[Semi-Update]

"What's that Hammer for, anyways?" you ask, pointing to the hammer.

Tam nods as she sees what you are pointing at. "That is a metalsmithing hammer. See, Flint orders hammers through me, yes, but recently my supplier gave me TWO hammers instead of one!" She shakes her head. "Flint says he only needs one hammer, so he left the other here with me. If you take that, I can also provide you with an Anvil and metal to smith, but it will cost extra, yes."

You consider it. Taking the hammer would allow you to learn and practice metal smithing, but you would need quite a few things to get started, and materials are pretty hard to come by.

What will you do?

You consider your options, but ultimately you decide to go for the fishing rod. “I’ll take the Fishing Rod, please,” you say, picking it up.

Tam nods. “Good. Now, if you would like some bait, I suggest talking to Kaluga, at the fishing shop. He will also buy fish from you, but only fish, whereas I will accept most items, but for a slightly lower rate.” Tam nods. “As a tip for you, I will always accept goods and items, but selling them to someone who specializes in that item will get you a slightly better rate, yes. I hope to your future profits, Mayor!” she says, as she goes back to organizing.

Well, now that you have a basic Fishing Rod, you suppose you could go fishing in the town’s rivers or ocean, but you’re pretty sure you need some bait to catch anything good.

Should you head to Kaluga’s Fish Shop, or go elsewhere?

You decide to head to Kaluga’s. Sure, you could probably use Earth Magic to get some worms for bait, but you may as well get some idea of how to fish first before you dive straight into it.

Kaluga’s fishing shop is located on the small piece of land created by the fork in the river, and as you approach the shop, you see a sign above the door declaring that this is, not unsurprisingly, “Kaluga’s Fishing Shop”. If you remember correctly, Kaluga is also the bass player for the Band, so you’ve actually met him before.

As you enter the store, you find yourself surrounded by colorful bits and pieces. Along every wall is fishing rods, lines, and what looks like small plastic fish? However Kaluga is nowhere to be found. This time, you decide first to use your Earth Magic to try to locate him. Placing your hand on the floor, it turns out that you were right, Kaluga is nowhere to be found within the store. However, you are quickly able to detect what you’re pretty sure is his heartbeat, though it’s a bit indistinct, since he appears to be on a wooden dock.

You head outside, and there he is, sitting like a statue out on the pier. In his hands he’s holding a fishing pole, and beside him is a toolbox of some sort, but if you couldn’t feel his heartbeat through the sand, you would swear that he was a statue. It isn’t until you’ve descended the cliff to the beach and are on the wooden pier, approaching him, that he opens his eyes.

“Greetings, Mayor Leo,” he says, glancing in your direction. “To what do I owe the pleasure of your visit?”

You’re not sure what the procedure for this sort of thing is, but you decide to sit down next to him. “I, uh, I just got this fishing pole from Nook’s,” as you say that, you show him the rod, “and she suggested I come see you about fishing.”

Kaluga nods. “Well, if you are looking into learning to fish, you could not have chosen a better place to start.”

[1/3]
>>
Kaluga gestures to the water beside him, and the waterfall to your left. “Here in Whiteport we are afforded an abundance of fish, both fresh and saltwater, with even more available from our nearby islands.”

He looks to the pole in your hands. “For you, though, you should stick with river and lake fish, both of which are aplenty here in Whiteport.”

You raise an eyebrow, confused. “Why lake and river fish? Why not fish in the ocean, like you’re doing?”

Kaluga closes his eyes. “That rod you have in your hands is neither large nor strong, but it does its job well. It once belonged to our former mayor, so it is fitting that it now belongs to you.” Opening his eyes again, he continues. “Lake fish, unlike ocean fish, can only swim so far down. They tend to be both smaller and weaker than ocean fish, though not in all circumstances. In addition, unlike ocean fish, bait for lake fish is plentiful. You need merely go outside on a day after rain, and collect some earthworms in a jar for later fishing. Or, I suppose, you could buy them from me.”

You furrow your eyebrows. This seems more complicated than you had initially thought. “Wait, do you have to use a different sort of bait for ocean fish?”

Kaluga nods. “Have you been into my shop, and seen the false fish on the walls?” You nod, and he continues. “In order to fish in the ocean you need a stronger rod, a stronger line, and most importantly, the correct bait. Ocean fish, or at least, the types most wish to catch, require the use of fish as bait, but I’m fairly certain you don’t want to catch a live fish every time you wish to catch a larger fish, do you? Instead, we use false plastic fish as lures."
>>
"For instance,” with this, he pulls sharply up on the line, and with it comes a fish the size of your torso. “This is a Sea Bass. It is common, but large. I will be selling this to Shelby, and it will likely be consumed mostly by Velour tonight. Now then, if you wish to purchase bait, or perhaps a rod, you should wait in my shop. Otherwise, I hear there is a large population of Catfish in the lake. Perhaps you’d like to look into that?”

You continue to sit on the dock for a bit after he leaves. Fishing, as it turns out, is a bit more complicated than you had thought. On the other hand, it looks like you’ll still be able to catch most lake and river fish with this. Maybe you should go check it out? Or maybe you should try something else for today.

To the lake it is, you decide. Earthworms shouldn’t be too hard to find, considering your Earth Magic talents, and from what Kaluga said, this might be a good first target for you.

It isn’t long before you arrive at the lake in the center of town. Really, it’s less of a lake and more of a part where the river becomes a bit wider, but you’re pretty sure this is the right spot anyways.

As you arrive, however, you spot someone else at the lake already. It’s that giraffe from last night, the one who seemed a bit sleepy when he got in. Cloud, you think? Whatever the case, he’s standing in the edge of the lake, looking into the water, while holding what appears to be a… a spear.

You duck behind a nearby tree, but from the looks of things, the giraffe is focussed on something in the water. A person swimming underwater maybe? Suddenly, he seems to spot what he’s looking for, and raises back his arm to strike!

You rush in as fast as you can, tackling him to the ground. Something immediately splashes off into the lake, and the giraffe drops his spear by his side as he hits the ground. With a grunt, you leap off of him, grabbing the spear and standing at the ready.

He… doesn’t seem to be particularly motivated to get up, though. “Urgh,” he says as he lies there. “What did you do that for?”

You frown. He’s not acting particularly malicious, for someone who was prepared to stab something a moment ago. “You were about to stab something,” you say, glancing at the lake. It looks like whatever it is hasn’t surfaced. “Who was it, and why?”

Cloud groans. “I wasn’t trying to stab anyone. Dr. Noir sent me out here, he said there was some sort of… ecosystem disturbance in the lake, and that he thought it was caused by a… supernatural octopus, or something. I was trying to catch it and bring it back to Dr. Noir.”
>>
Oh. “Uh… sorry about that,” you say, as you head back over to help him up. “Do you... want any help with that?”

He shrugs. “You seem a lot better with that spear than I am. How about you try catching it? I’ll watch, and, you know, learn from your example.”

You’re pretty sure that’s his way of saying he’ll do nothing, but to be fair, you are the one who stopped him from catching it originally. You at least owe him this much.

So, there’s some sort of… supernatural octopus in this lake? How are you going to go about finding it?

((Just because of getting two 20s in a row, I’ll use this to assign two stats.))

[Perception: 20]
[Reflex: 20]

You decide to stand in the lake, the spear in hand. Despite your continued reluctance, the weapon feels good in your hand. Familiar. You shake your head. It’s time to focus on the task at hand.

Before getting in you take off your shoes and socks to keep them from getting wet, but despite your direct contact with the ground, you can’t sense the octopus, probably because of the water in the way. Instead, you focus your eyes, staring deep into the murky depths of the water.

As you stand there, the flows and eddies of water lap against your legs, and you think back to your life before, in that city so far away. Back there, knowing what was around you wasn’t just a matter of convenience, it was a matter of life or death. You were trained to use your eyes, your ears, and even your nose to keep track of everything around you. Now, standing in this lake, it all floods back to you. The subtle reflections in the water. The almost silent underwater ripples. The movement, as the underwater fish react to each other, to the currents, and to this foreign invader into their ecosystem. The lake was being disturbed, and something like that left trails.

A flash of color in the corner of your eye, and there it is. A multicolored octopus, swimming throughout the lake faster than any fish should be able. Despite its attempts to hide, behind rocks and fish, you see it, and you never let it out of your sight. Suddenly, it changes tactics, surging towards you faster even than you would have thought possible. This blur of colors, fusing together into a single beam of light, flashes towards you in a straight line. But you didn’t train for nothing. This thing is nothing compared to the racing cars and lightning fast arrows of the city.

You hand blurs, and on the end of it appears a rainbow colored octopus, twitching on the point. “Is this it?” you say, turning towards Cloud.
>>
Cloud’s eyes are wide open, but he shakes out of it. “Y...yeah, that’s probably it. Here, just put it in this bag,” he says, holding out a plastic bag filled with water. You push the octopus off of your spear into the bag, and it seems to heal before hitting the water. You motion to give Cloud back the spear, but he shakes his head. “Why don’t you just keep it. You’ll probably get more use out of it than I would, anyways.” He quickly heads into the woods, leaving you alone.

You frown. This is exactly what you didn’t want to happen. It’s like something inside of you won’t let go. You had hoped to leave that city and be done with this, but now, barely a day later, and you’re already hunting things with a spear. It looked like Cloud was afraid of you, of what you could do. You sigh. Maybe small town life just isn’t for you.

Strapping the spear back onto your back, you consider what to do.

After all that, you suppose you may as well do what you originally came here for. With your shoes now off, you’re quickly able to detect a worm in the ground through vibrations, and with a small push you move the worm to the surface for you to pick up.

As you head back into the water, though, you begin to think. When you did back there, sensing the octopus as it swam through the water, you felt something on the edge of your consciousness. The eddies and flows of the water, though nothing like the life energy of the earth, felt… well it felt like something.

As you put the worm onto your fishing hook, you consider what you felt. It was more like… a very subtle string pulling on your ankle, so faint that you might have missed it, had you been concentrating less than you did.

What will you do?

[Minor Success]

As you step into the water, you feel the subtle pull on your ankle again. This time, you decide to try pulling back against the water with your mind. It’s… very different to how you interact with the earth. Unlike the energy in the earth, the water doesn’t seem to want to be molded or shaped. Like, well, water, the essence of it slips through your fingers the moment you think you’ve got a grasp on it.

So you try a different approach. If the pull is like a string, then there’s got to be something connected to it, right? You close your eyes, allowing yourself to feel the ebb and flow of the water, and the string that runs along it. Soon enough, you can sense the string as it flows backwards, into the lake. Like how you tracked the octopus earlier, you feel out where something is that it shouldn’t be, where the string is disturbing the natural flow of the water. You sense very carefully, as it stretches down the river, barely probing with the edge of your mind. However, as you approach the waterfall, you start to lose it. The flows, the little currents that show where something that’s not supposed to be is, become muddled. With the very edge of your reach, you sense that the string goes out to sea, but not much more.

You open your eyes again. It certainly isn’t Earth Magic, but you don’t have enough of a grasp to truly call it Water Magic either. Maybe more of a… sense? Whatever it is, you clearly don’t have as innate a grasp of it as you do Earth.

Well then, what will you do?

[Success]

After all that, you decide to finally sit down and do some fishing. Having already hooked the worm onto your hook, you cast your line out into the water, and wait. Luckily, it doesn’t take too long before you get your first bite, and a quick pull later you bring up a whiskered fish, its lip caught on your hook. Your first catch! You reel the fish in and pull it off the hook, setting it beside you, then use Earth Magic to find another worm in the dirt and re-bait your hook.

Over the course of the afternoon, you catch a grand total of 5 catfish, 2 black bass, 4 sweetfish, and even a Giant Snakehead! Before you know it, though, the sun is starting to set, and you figure you should probably get going. You smell a bit fishy, but you’re pretty sure your haul is worth it.

>Kaluga’s Fish Shop?
>>
You should probably just get these fish to Kaluga’s Fish Shop. After all, that way you can get some Bells for it, and maybe do something with them?

As you head towards the Fish Shop, you decide to leave your shoes off. You’re not sure what you’ll say if someone asks you about it, but with access to your Earth Magic, you feel much more open and free. With the grass beneath your feet and the wind blowing through your hair, you smile. All around you, you can feel the daily life of the people of Whiteport going on. All around you, you can feel bugs and birds, feeding from the earth. It’s not as fast or as exciting as city life, and it’s certainly a lot slower paced, but it feels more free. You know what? You were a bit hasty before. So what if you’ve got a spear strapped to your back again. So what if you had to fight through three zombies to get here. It’s moments like these, when time seems to slow down, that you really feel like part of this small town.

Kaluga is at his shop, this time, and looks up as you approach the desk. “I see you’ve acquired a hunting spear as well,” he says, glancing at your back. “Do you need help in learning to use that as well?”

You shake your head. “No, I’d say I’m fine. Besides… I’d really rather stick with a fishing rod.”

Kaluga nods. “Very well. So, I assume you have some fish for me?”

You hand over the fish, noticing that the fishy smell has only grown stronger. Kaluga raises an eyebrow. “Perhaps next time, Mayor Leo, you could bring an icebox to transport these in. I have a number of cheap boxes available, and the fish would remain more fresh.”

“Ah,” you say, a bit guiltily. “Yeah, sorry about that.”

Kaluga looks over the fish you’ve given him with a cursory eye. “I must say, you’ve done quite well, for a beginner. I can give you a total of 13,700 Bells for all these. Is that acceptable?”

You hesitate. “What if I kept one of the catfish, so that I could eat it?”
>>
Kaluga closes his eyes. “Let me ask you. Do you know how to skin and debone a catfish?” You shake your head. You suppose you should have thought of that. “Turning a fish into a meal is not as simple a process as it might seem to be. If you wish to learn, I suggest you ask Shelby. She will likely gladly teach you.” He opens his eyes again. “So then, my suggestions is that you sell the catfish to me, then perhaps use the money to buy something, if you are hungry.”

You nod. “Alright. I’ll sell all of them.” Kaluga nods and hands you a bag of bells, and with that, your business is done. You wave goodbye to Kaluga as you exit his shop.

By now, the sun has already begun to touch the distant horizon, you’re almost 14,000 Bells richer, and you still smell vaguely of fish. What will you do?

You decide to head to Nook’s Cranny. It’s been a while, and you’re pretty sure you now have enough Bells to buy most of the things in that shop. Plus, Tam might have some cheap food? You’re not sure, but you’re fairly certain the general store is a good place to start, at least.

The Plaza isn’t too far to walk, and as you arrive, you notice that Flint has started putting up the street lamp. He gives you a nod as you pass by, but little else. You’re pretty sure it’s because of what happened earlier.

Tam’s shop continues to be filled to the brim, with goods and items packed all across the walls. Tam herself is up on a very tall ladder, adjusting something up near the ceiling. “I’ll be with you in a moment!” she calls down, presumably having heard someone come in.

You wait by the counter until she descends, panting a little. “Oh, hey Mayor,” she says cheerfully. “Has your fishing rod brought you fortune yet?”

“Well,” you say, “I have caught a good few fish, but I would say I’m still quite a ways away from a fortune. What were you doing up on that ladder?”

Tam grins. “I realized that my Cranny is quite dark at night, and if the customer can’t see the goods, then how could they buy them, yes? So I have installed a new flood light, to keep the store well lit at all hours of the night!” As she says this, she goes behind her desk and flicks a switch. A very bright light suddenly turns on above, forcing you to wince and close your eyes against the light. Tam quickly shuts it off. “Hmm,” she says. “I suppose I will have to get a less bright light, yes?”

“Either that, or you’ll flood those customers right out!” you say, jokingly.

Tam shakes her head. “So are you here to buy something? I still have the clearance items from before, but if you request something I could see if I have anything available, yes?”

What will you do?

[Semi-Update]

"Do you still have that Shovel from earlier?" you ask.

Tam nods, gesturing to the clearance shelf. "The Shovel, along with the Bug Net, the Watering Can, the Farming Hoe, the Cooking Pot, and the Metal Smithing Hammer are all 500 Bells, yes. I must warn you though, there is a reason they are on clearance. Each is very much the cheapest version you could find."

You nod. Well, now you know.

What will you do?

Well, since as per usual this thread has died down around 12:00 PST, I'll just end this here. We can finish the adventures in buying stuff next time.

Good night, everyone.
