Ms. Browning goes on to tell the story of the "Fall of the Magi".

Back around 400 AD, there were three prominent groups of Mages: The Elder Council, The Academies, and The Guardian's Temple.

The Academies consisted of a group of schools, whose only real goal was the advancement of learning.

The Elder Council was a group of noble houses, who believed that Mages should reign supreme over the commonfolk.

The Guardian's Temple was all about keeping the peace, and they had the force necessary to do so.

"You see, of all of them the Guardian's Temple was the oldest order. If the stories are to be believed, then their order dates all the way back to the Golden Age" Ms. Browning says. "They consisted primarily of worshippers of The Guardian, who was the only God to remain on Earth after the Golden Age ended"
"Are they still around today?" You ask, trying to sound nonchalant about it. The truth is that the answer to that question is VERY IMPORTANT.

"In some aspects, yes" She says. "More on that later though"

According to records from that time, The Elder Council tried to seize control of not just the Roman Empire, but just about every other major political power of the time as well.

The Guardian's Temple, as well as the non-mages themselves put a stop to this. But not without bloodshed.

The common folk became fearful of Mages, and began hunting them as a result. The Elder Council went to ground. The Guardian's Temple, though they had aided the non-mages, suffered many losses.

The real loss during these times were the Academies, which were all destroyed.

The witch hunts that followed lasted for over a hundred years. And it would be over a thousand more before being called a witch wouldn't get you killed.

"Which is what led to the creation of the order known as The Witch's Coven" She says. "Remember when I told that there were people whose job it was to off mages that blab?"

"Yeah" You say.
"That's them" She says. "They keep an eye on revelation risks; such as mages who can't control their abilities, they run damage control whenever something goes wrong, and if they think that you might do something to jeopardize the community-?"

She drags a finger across her throat.

"Yes. Strict policies. Gotcha" You say.
"They're also the ones with whom you'll be taking your initiate test" She says. "To pass, you need to be able to use basic magic, and have at least a passing knowledge of history, theory, and society"

"I don't need to prove my trustworthiness?" You ask
"Part of the test is also making sure that you have an..." She pauses, considering which word would be best to describe what she's thinking. "intimate knowledge of what will happen should you fuck it up"

"Oh, I'm sure you'll be fine" She says, waving off your concerns. "So that's basic history and society. Any questions?"

"Good night works" She says.

You hug her a little tighter, and she lays a hand on yours.

"Goodnight Saif" She says.
"Goodnight Abigail" You say.

You close your eyes and breath deeply through your nose, taking in the sweet scent of her as you fall asleep.
