You are Leo, mayor of a little town called Whiteport. Thus far, you’ve met the citizens, got started on town development, learned some basic skills, and discovered your own ridiculous affinity for Earth Magic. It’s now your second day as Mayor, and you’re ready to face whatever may come.

You’ve just checked your office, paid your debts, talked to Flint, and bought an Ice Box. Now, you’re ready to start the day, stepping out from Kaluga’s Fishing Shop and… hold on.

You check with your Earth Magic to confirm that yes, that is indeed someone lying there on the beach and no, they aren’t dead. You rush down to the beach to see if she’s okay, but as you approach, one more thing becomes clear.

The creature on the beach is a mermaid.

What will you do?

For any newcomers, this quest is based primarily on Animal Crossing, but with elements of Rune Factory, as well as completely original elements, mixed in. The MC is a human boy named Leo, and he is the Mayor of a coastal town called Whiteport, the map of which is attached.

As always, there is a 20 minute voting period after every post (except the first post, which gets as long as it needs). However, if you just barely miss the window, I'll probably still accept it.

You rush down to the beach, to try to see if you can wake her up, while calling out for help. Rushing down the slope, you’re quickly beside her, trying to see if she’s still breathing.

From the subtle rise and fall of her chest, she is, but barely. You turn her upright and see that her face is bruised and scraped. As you move her, her eyes flutter open. She looks at you, her crystal blue eyes reflecting the summer light.

“Where am I?” she asks, her voice hoarse.

“Uh, you’re in a town called Whiteport,” you say. You’re… not entirely sure how to handle this. You’ve figured out that magic is real, but Mermaids? You suppose with the zombies you fought a couple days ago, you shouldn’t be too surprised.

The mermaid looks up at the sky. “Ah, so then I’ve made it. Thank goodness for that.”

Behind you, you hear the sound of someone running, and using your Earth Magic you can tell that it’s Kaluga. Of course he would be the one to answer, he was the only one close enough to hear. He seems… distressed.

“Persia!” he says, surprised, as he approaches. In a flash, he’s kneeling by her other side, cradling her head. “What are you doing here? I thought you said that if you left your island, you’d die?”

“I couldn’t wait until your next visit, Kaluga,” says the Mermaid, who you suppose is named Persia. “Time is tight, and we cannot afford to lose a moment. We… may have a chance without the stone.”

Kaluga glances worriedly at you for a moment. “Without the stone? I thought you said it couldn’t be done? How?”

“I have found another, Kaluga,” says Perisa. “While I was searching for the stone, I felt someone of strong affinity in this town. Someone with the potential to help us. With a third, we would not need the stone.”
>>
Kaluga closes his eyes, seeming suddenly to understand. “I see. We’ve already checked the others, so there is only one who it could be.” He suddenly looks directly at you. “Mayor Leo. I understand this is a lot to ask of you, but will you help Persia and I?”

“I, uh,” you fumble your words, surprised that the spotlight is suddenly on you. “With what?”

At this, Persia speaks. “Something dark slumbers, deep beneath the earth of this town. An ancient evil, a power that has been slumbering for centuries. If left unchecked, it will destroy all life in this area.” She looks to you. “Kaluga and I have found that it is soon to reawaken, but by ourselves, we cannot quell the force. It would take too long to train a non-adept to help us, but your affinity is strong. With only a bit of training, we could put the beast back to slumber. Will you aid us?”

What will you do?

“Yes,” you say, without hesitation, “I’ll help. How could I not?” You smile. “After all, I am the mayor. It’s my job to protect the people of Whiteport.”

Persia nods. “Very good. I had hoped that you would have a good heart, and I am glad to see that I was correct. It will be best that your training begins immediately. Kaluga can train you initially, but when you are strong enough, you must come to my island.”

You nod. “Which island is yours? I can see two on the map. And on top of that…” You look around. “There aren’t exactly any boats around here. How would I get there?”

Persia and Kaluga look at each other, smiling. “Don’t worry, Mayor Leo,” says Kaluga, as he takes up Persia in his arms. “When the time comes, you won’t need a boat.” Before you can respond, Kaluga stands up and walks away. It takes a moment before it registers that he’s walking on water.

“And to answer your question,” says Persia, “my island is the one closest to us now, shaped like a crescent moon. Come find me beneath the crook, and there you shall be rewarded.”

You sit there for a bit, watching as Persia and Kaluga walk out on top of the waves. Well, that just happened. It seems like you’re saying that a lot, recently. Just as an experiment you reach out a foot towards the water, but it looks like all your foot can do in water is sink.

Ask you stand up, it occurs to you that Persia was probably the pull that you felt yesterday. Well, that’s one question solved that you don’t think anyone really asked.

For now though, it looks like you’re once again free.

What will you do?

Well, for now, you may as well get some fish before Kaluga arrives. First things first, though, you’ll need some ice.

You figure that either Medara or Shelby should have ice, so you head back into the plaza, where the shops are. The first stop is Hops, since it happens to be closest.

It’s mid morning now, so Hops is practically empty. Only the last of the three you saw this morning, Pepper, is still in the shop.

“Hey, Medara,” you say. “Do you have any ice? I need some for my fishing box.”

Medara nods. “I’m pretty sure we’ve got some in the back. Let me go get you a bit.” With that she heads into the back room of the shop.

“Alright Leo, let me ask you a question.” You’re a bit surprised to see that it’s Pepper who’s talking. “How is it, exactly, that you’re able to find fossils so easily? Most people take months of digging to find even a single piece, and you’re saying you found an entire Megacerops skull in minutes? What are you using, some new sonar device? No, I would’ve heard of that, if it existed. Maybe with waves of the right frequency...” She almost seems to be ignoring you now, but suddenly she turns again. “Tell me, Leo. How do you do it?”

You’re not so sure you want to pursue this line of questioning, and you need an escape, fast. “Well, you know what Odwin said. I’ve got a knack, an instinct, you know?”

Pepper shakes her head. “That’s not a reason, that’s an excuse, something Odwin made up. What's the real answer?"

“I... uh...” you say, getting increasingly nervous. If this questioning continues, you’d be in a difficult position. “Oh hey, there’s Medara with the ice! I’d better get going! Thanks a lot, Medara!”

“Oh, it’s no problem Mayor. It’s just a bit of-” before you can finish, you’re already gone, ice box filled with ice. You sigh. It looks like Pepper’s going to be more difficult than the other two.

[Best of 3: Double 20s]
[CRITICAL SUCCESS x2!!]

You head out, again, to the lake. There’s nobody here today, so you simply sit down and summon a few worms up to the surface with your earth magic. Hooking one to your hook, you cast into the water, and wait. Almost immediately, however, you notice a faint glimmer in the corner of your eye.

[Perception: 20]

Churning beneath the waves, you recognize a bright glimmer shining beneath the water. The fish’s scales move like chain mail, their sheen like polished gold. You’ve seen this before, in a picture at Kaluga’s shop. You hadn’t thought to ask him about it then, but now you know that this can only be one thing.

A Dorado, the golden king of the river. One look, and you can see exactly why it’s called that. It’s like a fish made of pure gold, and despite the murkiness of the water, you can see it quite clearly.

[Will: 16]

Your first instinct is to react, but you push that instinct down, remaining perfectly motionless. Slowly and carefully, you maneuver the bait into position before the Dorado, ready for a bite.

The golden fish circles, then suddenly moves in towards the hook. But you remain motionless, and all it does is poke. It’s probing, questioning, poking once, twice, three times, four times, five times…

[Reflex: 20]

And now! You pull with all your strength the moment the fish goes for the worm, catching the fish’s lip and not letting go. The fish pulls, but you pull back, harder and harder, going as far as to root your feet to the ground with Earth Magic so that you can pull harder. Then, in an instant, the fish flies into the air, wiggling furiously on the end of your hook. You watch as it sails majestically through the sky, the light reflecting off of its scales producing a brilliant rainbow over the lake. Then it falls, and you catch it, holding its writhing form in your arms.

You’ve done it. You’ve caught the Dorado, King of the River.
>>
As you’re trying to stuff it into your ice box, however, with a SPLOT something flies out of its mouth. You shut the lid of the ice box, then go over to see what it spat out.

It looks like some sort of… necklace? You pick it up, and see that it’s a locket, the type that hangs from your neck. On the front, you see some sort of engraving.

[Found in luck, thou hast been graced]
[With one to find all that misplaced]
[Just do not lose this, or it shall cost]
[The ire of the Locket of the Lost]

Well… then…

You’re about to put the locket down when suddenly, a something flies in one the wind, landing in the water before you. One look, and you can tell. It’s one of the Rolodex cards from the Mayor’s office! How did it get here? You look to the locket in your hand. Could it be?

You… tuck the locket away in your pocket for now, and continue fishing for the rest of the hour.

By the end of your fishing experience, you successfully catch 5 Piranhas, 5 Koi, 5 Pikes, 3 Eels, and 2 DORADOS. You caught a second one just as you were finishing up, and you were a bit worried that it wouldn’t actually fit in your ice box. Clearly, the box is designed for 30 regular sized fish.

With your fishing trip done, you’re now free once again. What will you do?

Stereotypically, the Animal Crossing village museum does, in fact, have an aquarium.
And an arboretum for when we choose to get our bugcatching on.

But you're right. If the museum does have an aquarium looking for specimens, give them one of each fish we have. Sell the rest, but keep the Dorado as a trophy.

As >>41818947 says, they'll take "anything interesting." So they have to have an aquarium for sure.
>>
>>41818972
Also worth noting that the Wild World museum also had the coffee lounge and performance stage off in a corner.
Also, an observatory upstairs for looking at the stars and creating your own constellations.
>>
>>41819044
Why don't we sell off all but one specimen of each fish, head down to the museum, turn them in, and then head down to the coffee lounge to tell fish stories?

You decide to check out the locket. From the inscription on the front, it seems like this locket will let you… find lost things? You consider the rolodex card you scooped out of the lake. You had certainly lost this, and now you’d found it, but what about the rest of the cards? You suppose that, based on that, the locket must allow you to find lost things much more easily. Then, what’s with that line about “the ire of the Locket of the Lost”? You’re pretty sure you don’t want to know what the Locket’s “ire” entails, so you put the locket safely away again.

You consider heading back to the Fishing Shop to meet with Kaluga, and to sell these fish, but first… you decide to head to the museum instead.

Odwin, when you arrive, seems a lot less nervous than the day before. “Greetings, Mayor,” he says. “I’ve put the fossil you found yesterday on display in the other room, I can only hope that we find the other pieces soon, don’t you agree?”

You nod. “I’ll keep an eye out for them, Odwin. Today, though, I’ve got something else in mind.” You show him your ice box. “Have you thought of opening up an aquarium?”

Odwin shakes his head. “I can’t say I have, no. I wouldn’t know the first thing about fish, and I can’t begin to think where I would obtain them.”

You grin. “How about the lake? Here, I’ve got a few fish for you, if you want them.”

“Ah, right now? Well, we do have that aquatic tank that we used for the underwater exhibit, and perhaps I could expand that room with more tanks, both fresh and saltwater…” Odwin seems delighted. “Very well, it will work! An aquarium, I can’t believe I didn’t think of it myself! Alright then, what fish do you have for me?”

“Well, I’ve got a Piranha, a Koi, a Pike, an Eel, and a Dorado,” you say, showing the fish in question to him.

Odwin’s eyes grow at the sight of the Dorado. “M-mayor Leo, I can’t possibly accept such a rare fish! I mean, I suppose I could, but you’d be losing such a rare... “
>>
You shrug it off. “Don’t worry, Odwin. I’ve got another. It’s no big deal.”

“T-two? You caught two Dorado fish in one afternoon?” Odwin exclaims.

You nod, picking up a pair of glasses from the countertop. “By the way, Odwin, are these yours?”

Odwin glances up. “But… those are my glasses, the ones I lost almost a year ago! I was looking for those for months! I didn’t even lose them in Whiteport! How are they here?”

You shrug. “Just a bit of luck, I guess. Take care of those fish, alright Odwin?” You leave, waving to the mouse.

You suppose it’s about time to sell these remaining fish, or perhaps you should keep the remaining Dorado? It would certainly fetch a pretty penny, but it could also be quite an impressive trophy. Or pet.

What will you do?

You head to Kaluga’s, both to sell the fish, and to see about this whole magic thing.

When you arrive, Kaluga nods from his position behind the counter. “I see you’ve been fishing while I was away,” he says. “I assume you wish to do business first?”

You nod. “I’ve donated a couple of fish to the museum already, but I hope that what I have will fetch a good amount.” You hand the ice box to Kaluga, who opens it up and peruses the content.

Kaluga nods when he’s done. “Well, Mayor Leo, in total I’ll be able to give you 52,200 Bells for all of this. You’ve had a very lucky first two days of fishing.”

You nod. “And can I just ask how much of that the Dorado is worth?”

“Dorados are priced at 15,000 Bells,” says Kaluga. “Would you like to keep it?”

You think about it, but shake your head. “Nah, there’s not much I could do with it anyways. Could I have a picture with it though?”

Kaluga nods, pulling out a camera from beneath the counter. “Smile,” he says, and presses the button. He takes the photograph out of the camera, and hands it to you. “Here you are, Mayor Leo. If you’d like that framed, I suggest talking to Tam.”

You take the photo, and thank Kaluga. He takes the fish into the back room, and comes out with a large sack of Bells to give to you. “Now don’t spend it all in one place, Mayor Leo,” he says cheerfully.

You nod, storing the Bells in your pouch.

Bells: 53,200

“Now then,” says Kaluga, settling back into his seat, “would you like to begin your lesson now?”

“I’d like to begin the lesson now.”

Kaluga nods. “Very well. I assume you are wondering what it is that I was doing earlier.”

“Uh,” you consider your answer carefully. “It looked like magic, of some sort.”

“Yes, that it was. Tell me, have you met Mika yet?”

“Yeah, I have,” you say. “She has light magic, right?”

“Yes. You see, while Light Magic is more publicly known, though regarded in some places as mere tricks, Water Magic is quite different, for one specific reason.” As he says this, Kaluga raises a flipper, a tiny strand of pure water trailing from the tip. “Water Magic is about subtlety.”

Kaluga continues. “Unlike light magic, which is quite powerful, but requires the user to be in practically direct contact with the subject, a practiced Water Mage, such as Persia or myself, can effect changes nearly half a continent away, given sufficient channels to travel through.”

“So what you’re saying is,” you say, “Water Magic is long range, but not that strong?”

Kaluga smiles. “I never said that. You see, while Water Magic is subtle in its movements, it can also be powerful. The best way to use Water Magic is to subtly guide existing flows and currents. For instance, a few quick adjustments to the ocean’s currents, and one can summon up a tidal wave. Even water in its other forms are subject to Water Magic’s influence. For instance,” he holds up an empty flipper, then suddenly in his hands are ice cubes. “Here, I merely pressed together the water vapor in the air, affecting a change to ice. You must remember, however, that ice is difficult to manipulate due to its rigidity. Although for ice created through this method, all one has to do is…” the ice cubes disappear in a puff of air, “let go.”

[Water Training +1]
>>
You nod. “So Water Magic won’t let me, say, pull a whirlpool out of nowhere, but it will let me create one using the existing water currents, right?”

“Yes, that is correct,” says Kaluga. “Using this method, many interesting things can be done. The water walking trick, for instance…” He smiles lightly. “Well, I should let you figure that out on your own.” He then reaches below the counter, pulling out a small bowl with a goldfish in it. “Fish, such as this goldfish, can even be controlled with Water Magic, by changing the currents inside of the bowl. Why don’t you try?”

You nod, focussing on the water inside of the bowl. You reach out your mind, feeling the ripples caused by the Goldfish’s movements, and the subtle motion of the particles. With a pull from your mind, you convince the currents to line up, and then another pull to the water all at once sets the bowl in motion. The water around the Goldfish is directed, and soon it’s floating along the current, moving in a circle around the edge of the bowl.

[Water Training +1]
>>
“Very good, Mayor Leo,” says Kaluga. “In that case, it is time for the next challenge. You should attempt to compress the water in the air into cubes of ice, similar to how I demonstrated before.”

You hold out a hand, again focussing your mind on the complex interaction of water vapor floating around the shop. Unlike water, the ripples in the air are much stranger, and more difficult to track. You do your best, but you cannot pin down the water vapor for long enough to affect any sort of change. You sigh as you stop. “I can’t get a hold of the water vapor. It’s too… chaotic.”

Kaluga nods. “While the looseness of water vapor allows it to be much more easily directed, the vapor’s nature causes it to be a great deal more difficult for Mages to sense and control, at least initially. This is why liquid water is considered the best medium for Water Magic, combining both the elastic nature of vapor, and the substance of more solid water. For now, you should practice this technique until you are able to assemble an ice cube, purely out of vapor.”

You nod. “Thanks, Kaluga.”

Lesson complete, you leave Kaluga’s shop, trying once again to press together the water vapor. It’s more difficult than you had anticipated, but you suppose that’s to be expected.

You reach into your pocket, where the Locket of the Lost still sits. You’ve had quite a few strange experiences today, and it’s not even noon. Well, maybe now you should go to the Hops for coffee? Or maybe to Town Hall to talk to Poppy? Or maybe-

Suddenly, you feel an urge to look up. Why, you’re not sure, but you decide to look up anyways. It’s still a hot summer day, and the sun is almost directly overhead, but you could swear that there’s a glint of something up there-

You jump out of the way as a silver sword, it’s pommel glinting with rubies, sinks into the earth directly in front of where you were just standing.

Well, then. That just happened.
