The inside of the vast cavern stretches on all around the lonesome group of a dozen or so armored men. Below them looms a shallow canyon-like feature dotted with the occasional pile of bones, strange fungal growth, or patch of luminescent...don't even want to know what that is really. Your scouts sit quietly and silently in an improvised hide, noting the occasional crossings of murderkrabs, lurkers, and other as-yet-unidentified monsters that look much nastier.

A few dozen meters away from the hide is a small swathe of ground lightly covered with several meaty looking fungal growths. Only a keen eye would be able to detect the hidden capture pit lying below it. Unfortunately it seems that ALL THE FUCKING MONSTERS have keen eyes.

A lithe and graceful grey quadruped enters the valley suddenly and heading for the capture pit. Its galloping stride eats distance with incredible efficiency, and within moments it is at the edge of the trap and seemingly...sniffing at the fungal bait. The thing cocks its diode-filled head to one side as it sniffs at the contents of your trap, and after a few moments of investigation grabs one of the fruits in a talon and feeds it into a metallic port on its underside.

Then another.

Then another.

It methodically makes its way through the fungal trap until finally the ground collapses from under the robot scout with a distinct "CRACK. The trap doors re-fold themselves in an instant, devoid of their fungal bait this time, and deploy several metallic rings for pickup.

The scene replays itself with minor variations all across the massive science-complex cave you have access to, with almost 100% effectiveness.

In other matters, your troops back at base are enduring a furious training schedule under the guidance of your esteemed Sergeant Major. By his estimates, all 300 non-phobia'ed candidates should either be ready or be washed out within 2 turns. Cries for mercy and BRRRRRTTSSS of large calibre weaponry can be heard from throughout the base emanating from your training facility. Man, your training facility is effective but fucking brutal...

I don't think we need to spend an action for an already deployed scouting expedition (correct me if I'm wrong Strelok), but if you want to spy on the robot scouts that's fine.

We just captured some catlike robots that might be part of their force though, our scouts should send them back to our base for study.

A few of your scouts are currently in the field, but were beginning preparations to withdraw seeing as you actually captured a few of your quarry. If you'd like to observe their actions against/around other factions in the field then you'd have to burn another action this turn.

The scoutbots are already in your containment units, you simply have to use an action if you'd like to interrogate/deconstruct/otherwise study them.

That's exactly why we should build artillery -- having a great many cannon will mitigate a number of other shortcomings.

And improving infantry is necessary and beneficial, but there's just no real replacement for artillery. Without it, we're severely limited both on offence and defence.

Or to put it like this; while that ghoul horde was advancing up the valley, we should have been firing on them.

What's the status on the stealth drone research by the way? It's been going on for some time and we've already provided the resources.
>>
>>41862263
Especially considering friendly (human) factions are more likely to be on the surface than underground. I do agree with underground expedition too.

Perhaps the two arent' mutually exclusive. We could develop artillery capable of both arced and direct fire, for hard targets below ground and to smash targets above ground.
>>
>>41862263
>What's the status on the stealth drone research by the way?

Sword said he was "about halfway done" a few turns ago, so... maybe 60%? Two-thirds?
>>
>>41862335
Bah, I still suggest we further explore the surface once either our current scout force is done with their task, or the new troops are trained. Or better still we send out the Major next turn to do so anyway with some good men.

Speaking of prisoners, I believe we were also supposed to deliver them sometime soon. I want them gone and out of our hairs, and I can't say I'm interested in another fight so soon.

Damn, I wonder if Strelok went to bed. Well, the good thing about these civ's is that they're durable at least, and perhaps he has time off tommorow.

>>41862430
Naturally. Hmm, let's see.

Priorities, priorities.

I agree with the anon from last thread who says we're not "thinking like bugs" when it comes to the insectoids. Truly, now that I think about it, why would bugs communicate through language or speech like humans, and not via chemical or perhaps psionic telepathy like bugs would. I wouldn't put psionics or chemical hivemind out of the question, especially since it's clear they were designed by Sherman to be workers/soldiers.

Technology:
Things we need to do -
Research the Stealth Drones (working on it) [X]
Research the bandit "gifts" (working on it) [X]
Reverse engineer the Ray-Guns to be produced [ ]

Civilization Needs
Map of the Island and our larger overworld map [ ]
Setting up a secondary foothold on surface or underground (I suggest sniper outposts on the tops of the mountains close to our base) [ ]

Of course we can always add to this

Couple reasons. The units will bulk up their suits, which will get in the way of CQB. Not having traction against the ground might interfere with shooting. The units are an additional point of failure on the suits. They'll take power which, if they enemies we've faced so far are typical, we might need for more advanced weaponry.
>>41862875
Infantry, even powered infantry, will never be as well armored as vehicles.
>>
>>41863055
Eh, I don't disagree with you. But as it stands we currently lack manufacturing capability. And that kind of stuff is hard as shit to find.

Might be some megacorp survivors or abandoned bases we could raid though, or just try and jury rig some together using salvaged parts. The bandits of the region have considerably more tech and we're on a science facility anyway, so there's plenty of opportunity everywhere to see how we can improve our infrastructure research wise.

Mayhaps the robotic scientist might be exactly the person we need as a friend, especially in light of potential robotic assembly lines.

Although I'm thinking about it again and maybe not. Using them kind of like jumpjets could provide some nice tactical advantages in the field, although it might mean they can't deploy by vehicle. I suppose it will depend on just how hard they are to engineer.

Anyway, the bikes also had shielding units IIRC, so I'd like to develop that tech as well.

"So, we're supposed to make it bigger..."

"Yep."

"Well how are we supposed to do that?"

"Dude, are you literally retarded? You just put more racks'n'shit in there. It's that easy."

"Oh...Okay then."

Your workers swarm into the hydroponics bay, shoving aside growth bays to make room for expansions and extensions and new trays. The seedling incubators and fertilizer tanks are expanded, aquaponics enhanced, and overall growing space is nearly doubled.

Then we stumbled upon some old semi-corrupted notes in some of the computers in the hydroponics area. The notes are difficult to read, and Strelok can't seem to detect their presence, but they seem to suggest that there's some way to actually expand the hydroponics bay physically. The files that would instruct one on how to do this exactly are too heavily corrupted to access though.

Either way, food production has been greatly expanded. Water consumption has gone up apace, but with the automatic snowmelt collectors that shouldn't be an issue.

>Research the Bandit Armory

Your military members and scientists set themselves to cracking open and cataloging the Bandit Armory. The armory is quite extensive and surprisingly high-tech for coming from bandits...then again these were bandits with gravbikes and shields. Everything from some strange personal shield units to strange magazine fed squad artillery weapons to strange guns that fired cones of FUCKING ELECTRICITY or RADIATION were represented. Unfortunately, a lot of the stuff was booby trapped to high hell and back and tended to explode before it could be analyzed. We've still got plenty of usable weapons of all sorts, but our researchers can only pull suitable samples for research from small categories.

Basically I'd break it down like this.

2 Res - Lots of shitty stuff, a little more decent stuff.

What makes you think you can produce them?

You chose a bunker. Bunkers are moreso repositories of awesome stuff than they are makers of awesome stuff. Towers are the ones that come with less awesome stuff but more of the ability to produce it.

Now to be fair because of your fluff you'll have a massive headstart on producing them but unless you get manufacturing equipment you'll basically be making spare parts sufficient to build a new one and then assembling them painstakingly by hand. It's doable, and because vehicles are terrifying deathmachines it's even viable, but it's far from the best way to do it.
>>
Rolled 20 (1d100)

>>41917240
>>41907824
If we're going to produce vehicles, it should be war walkers to help us take Graphon Tower for ourselves.

Although if we're going to be manufacturing anything, it should probably be more power armor and advanced weapons, including heavy weapons that require power armor for a normal human to be able to use.

I'd like to reiterate that we need to get more AI upgrades and unlock the full potential of our base, it may include manufacturing equipment.

Also yay Strelok is here!
>>
Rolled 10 (1d100)

>>41917632
Power Armor is extremely difficult to manufacture. Like, being able to manufacture power armor is large-faction endgame tier type shit. You can't produce it except with actual materials (no resources allowed), which means either burning very-hard-to-get supplies, or having an intact supply chain for everything you'd need, or being a Think Tank. Your handful of power armor suits are worth a king's ransom to most, and the 25 you lost to Sherman were worth a small fortune.

>Research/Develop Winterized Gear

So our members went about looking into making winterized equipment and realized that somehow...no one in the bunker had a goddamn clue about how to make good cold-weather gear. They went outside and tried all sorts of shit from covering our vehicles or troops in synthetic wool, to exothermic chemical reactant packs, to covering and vehicles or troops in hot water. On the upside we discovered a lot of ways NOT to stay warm on top of a freezing mountain, on the downside we hit a goddamn research wall.

Then someone thought about searching the base archives.

>Discovered: Winterized Template Schematics

There were blueprints for winterizing literally every piece of gear we have in the base, and even some gear that we don't have yet. Better yet it's all simple and easy to do, and designed to be manufactured and done with the equipment we have on hand. On the downside, winterized vehicles will be much more susceptible to heat damage if they're operating caveside rather than topside.

What would you like to winterize?

Obviously someone with ambition, so the first step is a public announcement for the position, weeding out the ones not-interested.

The next step might be as simple as a public oratory competition, someone who can use their tongue very well.

Other would be if they are informed about the peoples outside of our base in any way, if they have any knowledge or connection with Graphon tower.

Also they need to actually be able to judge the value of items and equipment from a distance or even from description, knowing the difference between faulty junk and actually valuable items. It may be they need a degree of engineering or technical skills.

The last step could be a contest. Each person ought to be given something of an unknown value or make, perhaps the parts the something important mixed with useless junk. The first person to successfuly barter and trade for enough parts and figure out the usefullness of them gets the position.

Bonus points if they can turn useless junk into something even more useful, thinking outside of the box an all. Someone who can tell the worth of something beyond face value.

"Attention Whitestone Members. Command has announced the formation of a new pseudogovernmental position during this period of martial law: Minister of Foreign Trade. Assessment for fitness for the position will take place in Anteroom 2C, followed by a general vote on the candidates. Please report to Anteroom 2C if you are interested in the position."

Your assessment center was shortly inundated with candidates, from former used vehicle salesmen to simple shop clerks and more it seemed like most of your civilian population were there. The assessment opened up with a simple test of estimating the value of various objects as a weeding out measure. Some technical problems occurred without a system of currency in place anymore, but they were minor and smoothed over quickly. Approximately 3/4 of the hopefuls were eliminated at this stage, with several people making ridiculous estimations of the utility value of simple towels or bottles of water.

Next came a "selling" contest where the prospects were given an assortment of objects and told to attempt to sell one to a committee of their peers. This further reduced the number of potential candidates, as several simply couldn't make the sale. A handful of candidates, including a former industrial sales specialist and unexpectedly enough a dockworker, excelled at this competition.

Finally there was a public oratory competition among the remaining candidates. None displayed any particularly intense oratory ability aside from the industrial sales representative, but few of the performances were particularly bad.
>>

The distinguished dockworker had a surprisingly charming performance that spoke to the laymen, while the sales rep was better able to create a sense of urgency in his audience.

>Have someone in Power Armor go out and feed the Mute-Mutt.

A lone power armored figure shuffles its way across the moist grey stone of the stalagmite-dotted cave floor. The air is hazy with a slight fog, and the figure drags a slab of meat the size of a cow behind it by ropes. A pair of eyestalks sit on the hunk of meat, with small claws on chitinous arms occasionally emerging from where their legs are and sawing off a morsel to devour. They stare at your soldier.

A small distance away, obscured by the mist in the air is a silhouette of a large quadruped. Disgusting gulping, chomping, and wet swallowing noises can be heard from its direction.

"Alright now Hemson...just chill out. It's just a huge mutant monster twice your size with razor sharp teeth and fucking mindpowers. No big deal..."

The mist clears and the Mute-mutt is revealed standing aside a large, mostly devoured carcass. It stands as tall as Hemson in power armor at its shoulder, and its grey-brown bulk ripples with powerful muscles and is studded with the occasional prehensile spine. Its mouth opens to rip a chunk of meat from the carcass, and several rows of vicious looking teeth are revealed. Now that you're able to take a closer look at it, it seems that in several places...there are human torsos incorporated into its form.

"Hoooly fuck."

The Mute-Mutt turns towards Hemson and opens its mouth, spilling out a long tongue and causing a cascade of bloody saliva to pour onto the cave floor.

"Hey at least you guys got my back right, eyestalks?" Hemson looks back towards his chunk of meat for the reassuringly omnipresent presence of the eyestalks.

They can be seen scurrying off into the distance with a rapidity they've never displayed before, their odd scuttling gait causing them to bounce up and down as they eat distance to the nearest stone pillar. They continue on even as Hemson curses at them through his integrated loudspeaker.

Hemson turns around back towards the Mute-Mutt to find it standing immediately behind him, maw sitting in the air far too close to his helmet for comfort and still drooling. Hemson freezes stock still for a moment, before reaching behind him and dragging the chunk of meat to his hands. He eventually gets it into his hands, and gingerly places it in the monster's mouth. Seemingly pleased by his offering, the Mute-Mutt backs away from Hemson and lays down on the floor nearby to enjoy its newfound meal with gusto. One of the human heads may or may not've winked in Hemson's direction, it's difficult to tell from the video feed.

Actually I believe we should analyze the hive they are building and perhaps see what we can make of it, it's organization, how they run it and manage it, etc.

>>41922126
If we can do that as a Free action, I'd like it.

I believe we transfered some of them to an abandoned monster den near some mystery door and that they've been setting up a nest or something.

You never actually voted to establish them in that nearby monster den, but we can hold a vote on that right now.

-Establish Insectoids in nearby vacant Monster Den (Has a strange door at the bottom of it.)
-Keep them in housing for now.
-Other?

I still want to open that strange door and see what's inside. If the walls are covered in flesh or something we NOPE right out of there.

Maybe we should establish them in the vacant monster den once the hatchlings are grown?
>>
>>41922309
Well, we're not going to be solving anything with them sitting in our base. So move them to the monster den.
>>
Rolled 90 (1d100)

>>41922425
The insectoids seem to be able to handle their hatchlings pretty well. At this point in their development they're more like pre-pubescent children than infants, and can move and almost function on their own.
>>
>>41922425
Well, you have a point. And considering we set up forward outposts. . .

I'll switch to another monster den, the nearest monster den not the mystery door place.

>Ray Gun Research

Your scientists report they've completed their research on the Ray Guns, and can now replicate them. Unfortunately any that we produce now will have to either be mounted on a vehicle or wielded by power armor troops due to power requirements. This could easily be remedied if we can discover or research more compact and efficient means of power storage though.

Would you like a full report on the gun's functionality?

>Repair the Defenses
On the upside repairing the defenses went much better than last time. On the downside, they're fucking wrecked to hell and back. Too bad those bandit delimiters didn't get the chance to go off before, because goddamn would they annihilate an attacking force that got that far.

>>41922590
They're one and the same, and you've actually already collapsed all the other dens.

>>41923146
You sent like 5 dudes, it was a free action sort of thing. they were chased off by some monsters that they didn't really get the chance to identify.

If you establish the Insectoids in the nearby den it'll require an action an resource to happen and it'll be presumed that you wired the place up with some basic surveillance and such.

>Ray Gun Report
The guns are incredibly advanced in manufacture, bearing the distinctive precision indicative of Think Tank manufacturing equipment. When fired they emit a short energy pulse in near-infrared that is focused by several devices in the frontal cone of the weapon. The methodology of the actual pulse and focusing mechanism is rather brilliant. When it strikes a target it simultaneously ablates a layer of the surface and sublimates it all the way to plasma, causing a small explosion. and penetrates to cause deeper heat damage. The result is a concussive, prolonged burning effect that is particularly effective at penetrating natural armor and also has the potential to fry electronic systems due to interference from the plasma.

A very nice weapon. Your power armor troopers will be quite a terror with them once they're all equipped.

Soon we will have shielded power armour with Ray guns... All we need a a grav pack and we will have our own Crisis battle suits

Maybe we should plan it out.
Power Armor Ulimate version:

>Anti-Grav repulsors (throw back enemies in CQC)

anything else?

>>41924206
Oh...wow, that's absolutely terrifying.
>>
>>41924206
I think that would do, just need a solid number of them, plus we can use the drones been developed atm to act like eyes and ears for the power armour teams.

Maybe develop a cut down power armour variation with a stealth generator, grappling gear and a big ass sniper

Tbh all are a fair bit away but progress is good
>>
How about stealth sniper drones? Fly them cut into the sky and have them pick off key targets. Also stick heavy weapons on grav bikes to use a heavy weapon platforms
>>
>>41924602
With a master roboticist of uncertain intentions and stability around, I'm gonna go ahead and say we probably want real people behind our weapons as much as possible.
>>
>>41924834
Not to mention how she specifically wants us to make amends with the scientist, whom we're already clear and distinct enemies with.

>>41924602
This is an excellent idea, I was thiking if we have artillery research we can put mortars on our bikes. Get them to make explosive hit and runs or fly onto high vantage points.
>>
>>41924602
Generally speaking hovertech/gravtech only operates near the ground. You'll have to find another way to accomplish that.

>>41924885
She more wants you guys not to kill each other than to be buddies. There are several ways you could accomplish that.
>>
>>41924551

But what about our Nat100 walker repulsors?

If we equipt the drones with ray-guns we can use them as point defenses to detonate incoming missiles and shells.
