You are Brother Antarius, sternguard veteran of the Lamenters space marine chapter. Due to your chapter's involvement in the Badab War, your chapter was sentenced to a hundred years of penitent crusade. Having barely survived the crusade, your chapter's fleet gathered to return to the Imperium and rebuild. Unfortunately, your ship suffered a major malfunction during the warp jump and was seperated from the fleet, landing centuries into the future. Only you and eight other marines survived, and there has been no sign of the rest of your chapter's fleet. With the fleet missing, it is now up to you and your surviving brothers to rebuild the chapter until the fleet can be located.

After examining the fortress monastery and finding only minimal damage, you encountered two wounded natives who had been climbing the mountain. After treating their wounds, you learned that they had been attacked by a band of mutant living on the mountain. After discovering their camp, you and your brother purged all the mutants you found with fire and bolt, leaving none behind. The mutants dealt with, you returned to the fortress with the native child in tow, to check on his wounded companion's status

“He has been sitting there all day, waiting for him to wake up.” Uriel reports, referring to the child sitting in the Apothecarion by his still unconscious companion.

“Perhaps he is the boy's father?” You guess.

“Possibly. I have tried asking him, but as you know it is difficult to communicate with him.”

“Perhaps the adult will be more fluent, whenever he wakes.”

As you say this, the man on the table finally begins to stir. The child quickly rises to his feet, moving up to the table. The man's eyes open slowly, raising a hand to cover his face from the ceiling lights before turning to see the child beside him.

The child gibbers something in the native tongue. The man groans and replies back, the tone of his voice implying he's asking a question. The child answers, and the man distorts his face in confusion. He turns his head to the opposite side, where you and Uriel are standing, and his eyes widen in fear. He suddenly sits up and back up towards the wall the table is set again, causing his face to twist in pain and one of his hands to clutch where he was wounded.

“Please do not move so suddenly, you'll reopen your wounds.” Uriel orders him, unsurprised by the man's reaction.

He calms down slightly, but still glances nervously between the two of you. It seems he understands Low Gothic as well.

>”You are safe here. The mutants that attacked you have been purged.”
>”We mean you no harm. We found you and you companion wounded outside and treated your wounds. What is your name?”
>”Fear not, citizen. We are Astartes, the Emperor's finest warriors. We will not harm you.”

"Fear not, citizen. We are Astartes, the Emperor's finest warriors. We will not harm you."

The child says something to him in their native tongue, then points towards you and Uriel. The man finally seems to calm down, but still seems somewhat on edge.

"I thought the Star Knights left us long ago." He says in almost perfect Low Gothic.

"We are not the same chapter that was once stationed here. We arrived here just yesterday."

"I...did not think you were the same. The priests said the Star Knights offended their lord, the Emperor, and were killed by their fellow knights for it."

So, topic of discussion: its going to be a long long time before the lamenters are ready for offensive operations. And knowing the Lamenters, the odds of the galaxy waiting until they are ready is... poor. So, we need ideas for speeding up our recovery.
My first idea: chapter serfs often accompany their astartes masters into combat, and we can train serfs faster than we can train marines. So making our serfs unusually effective seems only prudent.
>>
>>41940907
It's kinda not kosher to use human and Astartes forces under the same command. Inquisitors get super nervous about that stuff. We may still be able to get away with it.
>>
>>41940977
That rule gets bent quite frequently, especially with things like the PDF. I figure we'll be fine if we keep the actual combat troops strictly limited. I was thinking more groups of stormtroopers and gunships to accompany our lightning raids than anything resembling an actual army.

"We are not them, we are the Lamenters. And who are you."

"I...I am Lysander, and this is my squire, Mathias. We are from Crasia."

Squire. You are not familiar with the term, but it sounds like he is the boy's mentor or something along those lines. They were both armed when you found them, perhaps the boy was training under him.

"I am Brother Antarius, veteran of the Lamenters chapter. This is Uriel, he is the one that treated your wounds."

The man, Lysander, looks down at the bandages on his torso. "I see...Thank you, ser Uriel. I owe you my life."

"You owe me nothing. It was the boy who brought you to us and brought the mutants to our attention."

Lysander frowns. "Yes, the mutants. You said you killed them?"

"To the last." You answer.

"Good. We did not expect to find mutants here. Must have made camp here to rob pilgrims."

"That reminds me. If you knew the last chapter was killed, then why did you come to this mountain?"

Lysander pauses to consider his words for a moment before answering. "I had heard stories that the weapons and armor of the Star Knights still remained in their castle. It was said that if a warrior proved himself worthy, he would be allowed to take them for himself."

You remember the corpses you found upon entering the fortress monastery. "It is fortunate for you we arrived here first then. The fortess-monastery's defenses would have killed you both the moment you set foot inside."

Lysander pales at this new information. "I-I see. Then the others who came pursuing the rumors, they were..?"

"Dead. We found their bodies lying at the entrance upon our arrival."
>>
>>41941151
"I see...That is unfortunate." He grows silent, seemingly unsure what to say now. Finally, he finds his words again. "If I may ask, ser, what is to happen to us now?"

>"You are free to go. Be careful on your way down the mountain."
>"That depends. We are looking for recruits, both serfs and marines. If you and the boy are interested, we will accept your help."

Right now the only ship you have is a shuttle, the sort of ship you'd use to travel from a planet to a bigger ship. Thunderhawks can operate in space, but they're not capable of warp travel. Odds are ships will be one of the things coming with your shipment of supplies from Mars though.

"That depends. We are looking for recruits, both serfs and marines. If you and the boy are interested, we will accept your help."

Lysander seems taken aback by this offer. You suppose that is to be expected, considering his people's view on the Adeptus Astartes, or 'Star Knights' as he keeps calling you.

"You would accept us?" He finally asks.

"You seem to be fluent in both Low Gothic and this planet's native language, and the boy is at just the right age to become one of us, assuming he can prove himself. Both of you would be very useful to have with us."

"I-I am honored, Ser Antarius. I am afraid I cannot speak for my squire, however. I feel it is not my right to obligate him without asking his opinion on the matter. Mathias?"

The child is silent, seemingly conflicted on something. "Would I be able to protect Crasia if I was a Star Knight?" He finally asks.

>"If you mean from this planet's other factions, I'm afraid not. It is not our place to get involved in the local conflicts, our duties are to the Imperium as a whole."
>"You would be able to defend Crasia and much more, not just this planet but others as well."
>"I am afraid not. However, there are much bigger threats out there than this planet's factions. As Astartes, our duty is to protect the Imperium as a whole from those threats."

You know, I'm kinda wondering how the Feudal Lords are maintaining such large kingdoms in their current tech level. It seems to imply the sort of organization that will inevitably result in a self sustaining industrialization.
>>
>>41942081

40K is weird - it's possible that they have 19th century agriculture and so have a much larger population, but are stuck with 12th century politics.

We'll have to see what happens now that blackpowder has been introduced - usually these kind of disruptive technologies result in big political shocks. I'm positive that wars between the countries will break out at some point.
>>
>>41942081
Mostly likely its that as a Astartes homeworld its attacked every couple hundred years and bombed back to the bottom of the tech tree.

>40K is weird - it's possible that they have 19th century agriculture and so have a much larger population, but are stuck with 12th century politics.
I more meant communications issues. Maintaining that size of a nation is extremely difficult for that tech level.

"You would be defending Heilos Prime as a whole from the enemies of man. You may not be able to participate in this planet's local struggles, but you would be a bulwark against whatever evils would attack this planet."

Mathias looks down and furrows his eyebrows, thinking hard.

"It is a great honor they are offering you, Mathias." Lysander pitches in.

"Indeed, you would be the first new Lamenter in over a hundred years." Uriel adds.

"...I'll do it." Mathias finally says after thinking it over.

You nod. "Very well then, let me gather the others. In order to prove yourself worthy of becoming an Astartes, you will have to-"

"Brother Antarius, we have a situation." You hear over the vox.

"What's the situation Avitus?" You respond, putting your conversation with the natives on hold.

"Come outside and see for yourself."

"I shall be there swiftly." You answer, turning back to Uriel. "Brother, we must head outside. Lysander, Mathias, please stay here for the time being."
>>
>>41942795
------
A moment later, you and Uriel have arrived outside, weapons drawn and ready. You find Avitus, Akriel, Sepheran, Astramael, Tacitus, and Elyas waiting outside as well, weapons drawn and looking up to the skies. Three figures can be seen lingering just outside the planet's atmosphere, seemingly small from here but most likely massive up close.

"Magron, what do the fortress's auspex say?" You ask over the vox.

"Three ships, two Strike Cruisers and one Battle Barge."

"Who are they?"

"It appears they are Minotaurs, brother."

Minotaurs. The name alone makes you clench your fists. The Minotaurs chapter is a chapter of space marines who specialize in destroying other space marine chapters. It was the Minotaurs who defeated your chapter and forced them to surrender in the Badab War. You saw many of your brothers die in that battle, some of which you'd known since your time as a scout. Their presence here is troubling, to say the very least.

"That's not all, brother." Magron continues. "The Auspex is picking up the names of their ships. Their Battle Barge, it's the Daughter of Tempests, Brother."

The Daughter of Tempests. A Battle Barge which once belonged to the Lamenters chapter, it saw both the Liberation of Slaughterhouse III and the Badab War. When the Minotaurs chapter defeated the Lamenters, they took the Daughter of Tempests as a prize, amongst many other things. For them to bring it here could only serve one purpose, to taunt you.

"This is the Minotaurs chapter, requesting permission to teleport down to the Lamenters fortress monastary." You and your brothers hear via telepathic message.

"How do you want me to respond?" Librarian Astramael asks, his tone low and angry.

"State your business." You tell him. Astramael closes his eyes and focuses, sending a telepathic message to those on board the Minotaur ships. A moment later your response arrives.

"We are stopping for resupply on our way towards the Maelstrom Zone. The Planetary Governor has informed us that the presumed-dead Lamenters chapter has been stationed here, and we wish to see for ourselves."

"The Planetary Governor informed you correctly. We are the Lamenters chapter. If you have no direct business with us, then permission denied."

"Curious that a chapter with a history for treachery so adamantly refuses to allow the Emperor's faithful into their halls. Perhaps there are remnants from the last chapter which you do not wish for us to see."

You clench your teeth. They're looking to provoke you. The Minotaurs have always relished battle with other space marines, perhaps they are digging for an excuse to finish what they started in the Badab War. You will not give them that excuse.

"We need not prove anything to you, permission denied. We have no spare supplies anyway."

A moment passes. Truth be told, you wouldn't be able to stop the Minotaurs if they chose to land anyways. As a matter of fact, they may do just that to further provoke your chapter. Just as you're beginning to dread their next reply, four more ships jump out of warp apart from the three Minotaurs.

"Magron, we're seeing four more ships here, report!" You command, thinking they were more Minotaur ships coming to join the first three.

"One Battle Barge, three Strike Cruisers, and their escorts, Brother. These don't appear to be Minotaurs though."

You relax, just a little. "Does the Auspex say who they are then?"

"It appears these are Mantis Warrior ships."

Mantis Warriors. Your chapters closest allies, whom you fought alongside of during the Badab War. Both of you were sent on a century of penitent crusade for your participation in the Badab War. You did not know what became of them between the end of your crusade and the year you are in now. If they are here now though, that is good news, especially with three minotaur ships sitting just off world.

"This is Chapter Master Audamus of the Mantis Warriors chapter, requesting permission to teleport down to the Lamenters fortress monastery on Heilos Prime."

You breath a sigh of relief, then turn back to Astramael.

"Permission granted. However, our teleporters are currently offline, you will need to send shuttles down to arrive."

"Understood. I see that there are Minotaur ships here as well. Are we interrupting something, brother?"

>"Not at all. As a matter of fact, they were just leaving."

"You are interrupting nothing, brother. Our chapter is always happy to see Mantis Warriors."

"We are glad to see you as well, brother. We had thought your chapter perished long ago. We will be down momentarily."

-------
A moment later, multiple shuttles begins landing in front of the fortress monastery. Mantis Warriors begin climbing out one by one, including a particularly large marine in artificer armor with two cybernetic legs. All your surviving brothers save for Magron, who is watching the fortress auspex, greet the Mantis Warriors as they approach. The marine in artificer armor steps forward ahead of the others.

"Greetings, brothers. I am Chapter Master Audamus, where is your chapter master, Malakim Phoros?"

"We do not know. Lord Phoros was on the Mater Lachrymarum when our fleet entered the warp. We were separated from the rest of the fleet due to a malfunction on the ship and landed on a forge world several light years from here. There has been no word on his or the rest of our fleet's location."

Audamus' face darkens. "That is a shame, I had hoped he would be here. I once fought by his side during the Badab War, he saved my life back then and I'd hoped to see him again here."

"We will find him one day, brother. For now, there are only nine of us. We will rebuild our chapter in their absence until we are able to locate them."

"I see. Then if I may ask, which of you is acting chapter master while Malakim is missing?"

"Very well then. Come, let us walk and talk then. I would like to see what condition your fortress monastery is in, if you do not mind."

You allow him inside, followed by the marines accompanying him. When you look up at the skies once more, you see the Minotaur ships are entering a warp jump to move on to their next destination. You silently thank the Emperor for sending the Mantis Warriors to you, things may have gone very badly if they hadn't shown up when they did.

"So what brings you here, chapter master Audamus? Surely word hasn't gotten out of our chapter's return already?"

"We were informed of your return by the Salamanders chapter master, shortly after you were discovered on Fumarius IV. When he told us you were given a new homeworld, we had hoped to arrive before you and help you set up. It seems we arrived at a good time despite being late though."

"Indeed, you have our thanks."

"So tell me, brother, what is your current situation here in terms of equipment and supplies?"

"We were fortunate to find that the chapter which resided here last left some of their equipment behind. We currently have enough equipment to arm roughly 100 marines, and have a handful of vehicles for use, with more on the way from Mars."

"What about ships?"

"We only have a single shuttle currently. More will likely come when supplies from Mars finally arrive."

"We thought that would be the case. Which is why we came."

"What do you mean?"
>>
>>41945300
The chapter master stops walking and turns to face you. "As I told you before, I am alive today because Malakim Phoros saved my life. When we heard his chapter was poorly supplied and at critical strength, I came here intending to settle my debt to him. Since he is not here, I will settle it with his chapter instead. We do not have many marines to spare, not while we are at crusade in the Maelstrom Zone, but we are fortunate enough to have a surplus of supplies and ships built up over the centuries."

You blink in surprise behind your helmet. "You are not saying what I believe you are, are you?"

"There is a Strike Cruiser with us called the Sword of Contrition. Consider it and all the equipment aboard it yours. The serfs on board have all agreed to serve you as well."

You are taken aback. Not just a Strike Cruiser, but all the weapons, armor, and vehicles stored aboard it as well? Such a gift would demand a debt of gratitude to the chapter giving it.

"Your generosity is incredible, but the Lamenters are barely a squad - such a gift could not be repaid in two centuries. The Mantis Warriors should not be burdened by such debts - so I will ask you a favor instead. Use your strike cruiser to hunt for rumors of my fallen brothers while we rebuild here - even if they are dead, we must know their fate."

You shake your head. "It is too much, especially when we are only 9 marines strong."

"You may be 9 marines today, but given time you will grow to 100 marines, then 400, 800, and one day, you will be back to 1000. This gift will equip you for when that day comes."

"...Very well then. We will gladly accept. Consider your debt to our chapter and Malakim Phoros paid, and our brotherhood eternal."

The two of you shake hands, the bond of brotherhood between your chapters rekindled after more than 300 years apart. You were both led astray once, but never again will either of you stray from the path. You chapter will continue to rebuild, and one day when you are back to fighting strength again, you will join the Mantis Warriors and many other chapters in the crusade for the Maelstrom Zone, the place you both once fought to defend.

Calling it a night here folks. I'll be running HSQ either Tuesday or Wednesday, probably Wednesday. Next Lamenters Quest will either be whichever of those two I'm not running HSQ, or Monday next week. Keep an eye on twitter in case anything changes though.

I'll stick around for a little while longer to answer questions. Thanks for playing folks, hope you all had fun.
