>strange, vibrantly colored humanoids colloquially called ghouls show up on earth one day
>secretive about their origins, they only say they come from a neon nightmare. Further explanation is delivered in non euclidian terms humans can't understand cause they can't hear the colors, man
>the ghouls seem.mostly interested in surfing, fruit, and spearmint gum

A surreal and pyschadelic setting where modern earth intersects with a synthesiac wild other side with bizzare consequences. Government cover ups and demon invasions may also be involved.

First from me: suggesting we call the setting Far Out or The Far Out, to be used interchangeably with Neon Nightmare as a title and a setting term for the other side.

Also suggesting the origins of the ghouls be secretly.humans who went to the neon, man. Since they can interbreed and all.

Further suggesting the inclusion of other races and creatures, like the FINK

The FINK aka Rat Fink aka Rat Goblin is a diminutive creature of about 3 to 4 foot tall (not counting ears) with big mickey mouse ears and hairy bodies in vibrant dayglo colors. Resembling anthropomorphic rats, they have bulging eyes, naked tails, and share a toothsome manic grin with their Ghoul cousins

Where Ghouls tend to be laid back, Finks are manic and energetic, constantly possessed with a jittery hyperactivity that can make them grating to some people's sensibilities. They seem to have a cultural obsession with engines and speed, and a savant like understanding of motors that they tend to waste on tooling up and blinging out cheap clunkers that they can cruise in high speeds in

Somehow the ghouls are the souls of an alternate-timeline incident where astronauts in a parallel dimension had their consciousness melded with interdimensional beings. When the beings stumble upon us again in this dimension, they use what they remember about the astronaut's jumbled psyche to interact with people. That just happens to involve a lot of active imagination.

I honestly like them being aliens more, allows for better culture shock between the two species. I guess it's just my opinion though. We don't need them to be humans and interbreeding isn't as big of an issue with what we already have.

How should we determine names though? Alien tongue or actually pronounceable?

Actually, for the snowy regions, winter months are probably really good for the visually-stimulated ghouls. Get high off some wendy and stare at the sky, since the cloud cover means no getting blinded by the sun.

They'd rather face xenophobia and let the humans stew in suspicion than talk about the Neon Nightmare. To them, our world is a paradise in its relative simplicity and permanence.

I think they'd be pretty staunchly against it in pretty much any circumstance.

What would a ghoul suggest to a human who wants to understand how ghouls see the world.

Idea I had while reading the last thread, didn't realize everyone was already in this thread when I submitted it
Due to their perma-grin, most ghoul facial expressions are focused around the eyes and (assuming we're going with the goblin-like ears of the last OP) ear position and movement
Most humans, with the exception of those who spend an exceptional amount of time with ghouls, have trouble reading these cues

When ghouls attempt to use their native idioms in english (or whatever other language) it sounds like something that's been run through bad translator

personally I'd put Ghoul physical traits to be as potentially broad as humans can get, so yeah that's the norm, but Ghouls who train at it can get much faster or stronger than a Human of equivalent size(although it's kinda different too, since Ghouls were semi-arboreal back in the Neon Nightmare their strength often works closer to other primates than Humans, and they are more adapted for short bursts of activity compared to the Human adaptations for extreme endurance)

On the subject of eyes/mantis shrimps, how many colors can a ghoul see? For comparison, a human has 3 colors they can see and mix, while a mantis shrimp can see 12 I believe? My preference is that they can see maybe 6 colors if not 5, which is why mantis shrimps are spooky becaus they see more yet are extremely violent predators.

Myth wise, they are also scared of certain monsters that humans don't understand (though to be fair, they don't see how we can find vampires, zombies, werewolves, ect, scary), such as a monster that's a big line in a smaller that has two sides that are two different colors, and at this point in the description the ghoul will usually say "whatever man, you just don't get it."

The original experiment was to test the effects of a microwave for FTL technology. There was a few strange science tests about it a few years ago, but many speculated that this only happened because of Earth's magnetic field, a strange quirk of the shield around earth. We later figured out this was the key.

So scientists on Earth created several gateways that were capable of putting up a big 'stop' sign to microwave transfer devices; hoping to catch whatever was sent through. Perhaps this would be similar to teleportation. So they put up gates all over the world and began the experiment one quiet Monday morning.

When the device was turned on, almost immediately, a few short beings in wild colors came streaming through the portals. The researchers fled at first; thinking to be insane or the result of an alien invasion.

These beings were the ghouls, the first to come.

The Ghouls described how they streamed into the portals to escape their world from the 'Neon Nightmare'. It seemed that the first Ghouls to escape would actually be the last to arrive, due to how the particles would be intercepted. This is why there are still freshly warped Ghouls- and this also explains why all the Ghouls that first immigrated into Earth culture were the younger and poorer people; the old and powerful obviously fled first, but would come last. What would this mean to the Ghouls and society in general? They had already adapted Earth culture, set up their own councils and integrated into Human society and government. There was a Ghoul senator, for christ's sake; only time could tell.
>>
>>42022097
Yes
The key thing is that the Ghouls won't say what happened to the Neon Nightmare and their triggers are things that don't work with their understanding of shape and color.
>>
>>42021949
>chicks with sense of humor are goat
>goat

How many ghouls would have been offended by this? Or at least shocked.
>>
>>42022147
Eh, I prefer the ghouls' arrival being completely unexpected, as opposed to being caused by a government experiment.
>>
The druggy and std stuff is getting a bit memey tbh
>>
>>42022171
Same, causes a bit more political unrest because even the government isn't sure what the fuck happened. Also having it be a singular government wouldn't really allow for the Ghouls to become more widespread and distributed around the globe.
>>
>>42022204
>>42022171
personally I assume the majority of Ghouls arrived throughout the Western Hemisphere, with a smaller amount in Europe and elsewhere in the world
>>
We've been neglecting a bit their love of the ocean. Boats, surfing, beach stuff, etc.
>>
Because ghouls can communicate with sounds and colors, their written language is equally confusing. Even if humans can decipher letters and simple words, the moment where instead of text there's a dash of yellow on the page, the message is lost to them.
>>
>>42022248
Boating would probably be pretty popular, especially if they showed up here in the pacific northwest. Kayaking and all that. They'd probably find it easier to fit in on the coasts of california, most of washington, and western oregon. We have good lakes here so there's that.
>>
>>42022171
>>42022204

It was unexpected. They turned on a doorway, expecting to send a few bits of tungstun through a teleportation unit a few miles or maybe across the globe if they got lucky, but then an entire race of ayylamos just came streaming out seeking asylum.

It'd be like if an astronaut kicked over a moon-rock on the moon and saw an alien skull and then they found some aliens living in bunkers there later or something. It's completely unexpected.

Personally I really like this new diverse world but I would need to handwave a reason to make Earth less shit at the moment so they can join it; economic fears and resources are already dwindling enough as is.
>>
>>42022248
I suggest that while ghouls love sea side stuff, deep sea things get them unnerved, mainly due to their fear of certain sea creatures and sea creature traits.

>"Dude, that fish is glowing man...shouldn't be doing that, man."

>>
I wonder what exactly their horns look like. I wonder this because I'm throwing in the idea that a common thing for ghouls (and I guess horned humans?) is to inscribe things into their horns. But what? I have no idea.

>>
>>42022326

I'd prefer if the game took place in like, I don't know maybe 2020? Of course doing Sci-Fi like that is pretty silly, so maybe in the past.

I don't know but I'm on a really big kick about working that recent development about dumb potential FTL drives you see in all those clickbait science articles. A lot of people, even on 4chan, said it was because of Earth's magnetic field; so my idea of FTL is teleportation between planets that have an electromagnetic field instead. It's cool because it keeps the action on the ground instead of in space ships. I don't know; I just think its cool.

But if it didn't happen because of an experiment; how did the Ghouls show up then? They had to have hijacked some technology or something had to change. I know its ridiculous but it kind of hurts my autism to think a random ass oblivion gate just opens up with Ghouls coming out.

Ghouls want to be cremated because they enjoy fire. Fire gives off a whole spectrum of color that we can't see and they enjoy quite a bit, its not like fireworks level or anything but it is pretty cool.

Traditional Ghouls want to be ground into powder and made into body paint that their children are supposed to dance around in for hours because they are weird like that

I think 2020 would be a good point. Fluff it like they arrive today, now we're five years into this debacle.

I also like the total lack of fanfare on arrival, though humans will flip their shit the second a ghoul is seen. Probably fitting if they just appear speaking the native language of the region. Gets a bit weird for the mixed-language communities out there.
>>
>>42022416
I was thinking that the Neon Nightmare dimension and ours intersect every now and then throughout our planet's history, which is the reason Ghouls and most other NN lifeforms that have crossed over are compatible with our bio-sphere, they share a common origin(Ghouls are theorized to have descended from a pre-Toba eruption population of Hominids that fell into the NN during the last major convergence between the dimensions), although adapting to a dimension as weird as the NN means there's lots of things about Ghoul biology that just comes off as baffling compared to Human biology

>>42022447
>>42022488
I was going to suggest that the traditional Ghoul funerary practices are similar to the human tradition known as Sky Burials or Towers of Silence, originating out of necessity in the dangerous conditions of the NN, but eventually adopting some surprisingly serious spiritual connotations by Ghoul standards, although the practice is almost completely dead post exodus

I ranted about Magical Realm last time, and it's the same sort of thing here, as with fluffing out any potential race. As long as we don't directly add something major that's inane bullshit for the sake of LOOK AT ME, then we'll be fine.

Even the mint-as-hallucinogen became a thing because we were in the context that ghouls react to things drastically different, and drugs came up. It's silly, it's kinda random, but we didn't just say "Let it be so." We stated a fact, and then figured out what it meant for ghouls.

And now we will hopefully go back to not talking about it, and just avoiding taking them there.

>After the total failure of all digital technology on the previous expedition, this expedition used chemical film. However, when developed all photographs- with the exception of the three above- displayed this pattern. Notably, fractals in general, and the Mandelbrot set in particular, hold no special significance to ghouls and their relatives; the few who could be coaxed to speak on the subject professed ignorance as to why this pattern in particular would occur in all attempts to record the Neon Nightmare.

Given the talk about fractals and the noneuclidian horrors, I think ghouls may actually prefer really cerebral stuff instead. Stuff like grand strategy and tactics. Hell, the surge of Bejeweled clones might catch right back on as ghouls discover them and create a new wave of demand.

Could be they're startlingly good at any game involving war strategy on a board, though actual command would be totally lost on them, since they're peaceful and also would have trouble rallying human factions.

Ghouls typically show interest in a potential partner with a vibrant display of colours that the average human can't see
Other signs may include leaving small gifts in random places, wearing your clothes, and an increase in affectionate behaviour

Ghouls apparently really like sun and surfing; it stands to reason they enjoy physical activity. They probably have a much larger percentage of gym-goers than humans.

>A string of strange murders are popping up around town. Normal humans are being killed, and fake horns are glued on top of their heads. People are unsure who is doing this, but in town people are beginning to mistrust each other depending on if they're humans or ghouls

A ghoul tells you and your friends about a strange reality warp that's been staying for at least a whole day. This is strange, as most warps last at from a minute to an hour at most. Law enforcement is keeping people away from the reality warp zone for safety, but he is sure that he can sneak you all in and you can all explore the strange combination of earth and the NN together.

Problem is, once you're all in there, he reveals that he was born on Earth, and has no experience actually being in the NN.

Now your mission is to explore, hopefully find strange things, and escape before the reality warp closes, and drops you in the NN instead of Earth.

So if ghouls like beaches and coastline areas, does that mean that not many ghouls live in landlocked places? If that's the case, does that mean that due to the smaller exposure to ghouls, people in landlocked areas are more inclined to have bigoted feelings towards the ghouls?

>The Horn Virus

The Horn Virus is an STI or STD that gets in the host's body through body fluid transfer. It's a blood borne illness, and so universal blood precautions apply to even Ghouls.

The majority of Ghouls have it, and its relatively benign. Kind of like how more then 60% of adult humans have some kind of herpes, more then half of ghouls have horns. It is unknown the exact numbers because the Ghouls aren't exactly good record keepers to begin with, and the more conservative and older Ghouls coming through the portal now would probably have lower rates of the disease.

Once infected, the host begins to grow horns on their head. Many Ghouls hiding this disease will cut off and grind down these horns to stubs to hide them, but many just shrug and accept it.

The most curious thing about the disease? Humans can catch it. Kind of.

>The Horn Virus in humans
One big benefit of human to Ghoul relations is the lack of transfer of diseases- you're usually safer around a ghoul then any human in a health sense. Ghouls have their own diseases amongst themselves; like the painful and feared Cake-Foot and the fortunately curable with modern technology Crack-Bone. But Horns is able to infect humans.

There is a large amount of variables that determine the infection rate of humans; some humans are genetically susceptible to the disease, the amount of types of sexual contact between human and ghoul, how often this contact is, and many more, even diet is said to play a role. Some people report headaches, and if contact stops this may stop the horns from sprouting. However if the horns do 'sprout' they cannot easily be removed.

Humans with horns are called 'Incubi' and 'Succubi' depending on gender, due to the sexual nature of their horns. Ghouls tend to care less about the horns and sometimes even find them cute or endearing. Horn size, shape, and color also depends on the individual.

There is a surgery that can remove horn stumps in humans, but it is painful, expensive, and it is said that if one continues sexual contact with Ghouls the horns can grow back even worse and in larger and more twisted shapes. Most who end up with horns will just live with them, knowing that they will just get them back if they have them removed due to their habits.

How is that for a write up?

>>
>>42024306
I like to imagine they'd barely be affected by normal dosages of caffeine, they have to take double or sometimes triple the amount a human does for it to have a noticable effect(and Ghouls really don't like the feelings a caffeine high gives them, makes them feel too jumpy and paranoid, to put it another way, they start acting like Tweak from South Park)

Something important to remember about Ghouls is that in many ways they're a Prey species by evolution, so some of their quirks come from that

Catching up with everything I've missed since last night has been a trip! Great work everyone!

There's been a lot of discussion as to how the Ghouls first came to Earth and how they then integrated themselves into the Human population, so I thought I'd throw in my two cents as well.

I can imagine that the Ghouls began their exodus in the late 1980s to early 1990s, slipping through the space between the Neon Nightmare and Earth to appear singularly or in family units of ten or fewer. Making no secret of their arrival, the Ghouls were discovered by the public relatively quickly, becoming a media sensation as the world governments moved to detain the refugees. Soon enough more Ghouls started showing up, appearing in groups ranging from dozens to hundreds at a time as their flight from the Neon Nightmare began in earnest, sparking fears of a "Demonic Invasion" and Armageddon amongst many religious types.

The governments of the world began rounding the immigrating Ghouls into refugee centers detention and camps for holding and processing, and the United Nations began seriously and publically questioning the Ghouls about what they were, where they were from and why they were coming en-masse to Earth. The Ghouls told the UN about their homeland of the Neon Nightmare and about how the Neon Nightmare drove them from their homeland and how they sought out another world where they might be safe, but their answers were surreal, disjointed and fantastical, and were considered by many politicians and world leaders to be unsatisfactory half-truths and bizarre fabrications.

However, despite their unwillingness or more accurately their inability to adequately describe their situation to the United Nations, many people around the world found themselves won over by the Ghouls' earnest pleas for help in the face of the catastrophe they had fled.
>>
>>42025219
Those that had met and interacted with the refugees personally were especially sympathetic, as they had experienced the Ghouls' genuinely friendly personalities, easygoing ways and non-violent natures first hand. Grassroots movements started up aiming to see the Ghouls freed and granted asylum, and eventually enough lawyers and politicians were won over to their cause that most world governments were forced to comply.

Over the course of several years, many, many Ghouls fled the Neon Nightmare and found a new home on Earth. There is no way to be entirely sure how many crossed over, but it was estimated to be somewhere around five to six million Ghouls all told. That number has of course risen in the decades since they first started showing up as the refugees settled down well enough to begin having children. While still as inscrutable and mysterious as they had always been with regards to their native culture and what had happened to their homeworld, Ghouls remain just as friendly, easygoing and non-violent as they ever have, accepting Earth cultures and integrating with its peoples with surprising speed and willingness.

This isn't of course to say that everyone is still happy with the Ghouls' presence or that everyone believes their story. There are many religious people around the world who still view the Ghouls as demons and devils, and those who associate or fornicate with them to be sinners of the worst order. There are many conspiracy theorists that believe that one or more world governments created the Ghouls through psychedelic experimentation, or that they had gone to the Neon Nightmare before the Ghouls had come to Earth in search of who-knows-what. There are many more people who resent the Ghouls for taking their jobs and housing, or who hate them based on their slightly unsettling appearances alone.

For the most part though, the Ghouls have become more or less accepted as extremely quirky citizens of their respective countries and of Earth.
>>
>>42025219
>>42025401
And damn, I forgot to touch on the surreality the Ghouls brought along with them.

Ah well. It's not meant to be any sort of definitive guide but more like a possible summary of how the Ghouls came to Earth and how they integrated with the rest of the population. Lots of things I left out, nuances and subtleties and details, but, worth a couple posts maybe.

>>
How many colors can they actually see in comparison to humans who see three? I'd say six or seven so they're above butterflies, but see less than a mantis shrimp.
>>
So does contracting horns actually have negative physical effects besides now having horns?
>>
>>42028736

I would say no. The potential social stigma is enough.
>>
Could a ghoul survive in the middle-east?
>>
>>42028885
I'd agree, it'd put pressure on people working in conservative work places due to their bosses knowing who they had sex with. Horns may become more common in those places due to the youth trying to rebel against their authority figures. High Schools would be another place where this propagates though sometimes, it isn't completely malicious, rumors mostly.

> Hey, did you see Wyatt's horns?
> Yeah, they look like Phi's horns actually.
> Nice.
>>
>>42028885
Dude, but, you cut them just right and now you've always got a bottle opener. That's OP in itself.

>>42028972
As long as they get to the actual Muslims and not the violent pretenders.
>>
>>42028972
In terms of dealing with Muslim culture or in terms of weather and surroundings? Depends on their reliance on water for the latter. In the 1990s? Probably not to easily. Currently? With the current situation that's going on over there, no.
>>
>>42028726
I don't know. I would say as many or more than mantis shrimp actually.

>>42028972
They could survive I'd think, though they might need to invent sand surfing or ride dune buggies.
>>
What I find interesting about the concept of human and ghoul's getting it on together is that really, ghouls are unnerving looking fucks. Yes, they're kind and calm, but they do actually look like monsters and demons, and most people are going to be unnerved by that. So for someone to actually get past that outward appearance and care more about their person than their looks, and is willing to potentially get horns from them, that actually shows a lot of character.
>>
>>42029071
How would Ghouls feel about humans romantically, anyway? While there would be plenty of people who don't mind, or even enjoy the appearance of Ghouls more than humans, the vast majority would be every creeped out by them.

So is it the same situation for Ghouls? Or do they find humans a little boring, but not off-putting? What do most Ghouls think of humans who like Ghouls? Find them to be creepy fetishists? Or think it's cool they're so open minded?
>>
>>42029168
We're stockier and hairier, and by a lot of the talk stronger. You and I both know there are humans who like that, so it's not a stretch that some ghouls would too.

The main hangups would probably be lack of bodylights and the difference in expression. Other than that, everything we've done thus far suggests they really just don't care.

>>42029071
Or particular fetishism.

Wonder how common it'd be for humans to just want the horns. The kind of people that get lots of piercings and things like that. Getting them and would be far from a painful procedure anyway.

I just had the thought that ghouls would actually make really good translators to accompany ambassadors. The ghouls apparently pick up the local language, but they also have their native language regardless of that.

In other news, how about some more quest hooks:

>A group of Human and Ghoul children have gotten lost... elsewhere... while playing hide and seek, and their parents are worried sick. Find them before something else does.

>A wealthy "Ghoul Enthusiast" seeking out a particularly important Ghoulish cultural artifact to add to his growing collection, and needs several "agents" to help make this happen.

>There's a HUGE party tonight and it absolutely has to go off without a hitch. There is the not-so-little problem of the Xhitlo beast that just phased in and claimed the beach as its own, though.

>Skitt, nicknamed for her mottled resemblance to a bag of skittles, is begging for help completing her paper route and needs a "flinger" while she drives the scooter.

>Back when Ghouls first started integrating, many Human parents did not want Ghoul children attending school with their own. The first Ghoul children to attend public schools required an escort of soldiers and some courageous teachers to see them through.
>>
>>42029568
The first 3 hooks are pretty solid. The last 2 may need some fleshing out, but I could see them working.
>>
>>42029568
>and needs a "flinger" while she drives the scooter.

It becomes clear that she can't do it herself because along the way it seems like all the houses stretch away when you try to throw the paper at them. At one point, you had to dodge some really strange creatures. In fact, by the end of it, you're not certain whether or not you were on Earth the whole time.
>>
>>42029268
>I just had the thought that ghouls would actually make really good translators to accompany ambassadors. The ghouls apparently pick up the local language, but they also have their native language regardless of that.

That's true! It seems as if the Ghouls have a supernatural ability to pick up any language that they're exposed to, perhaps as a function of their otherworldly powers of perception.

I also like that the Ghouls do have their own language that they will occasionally speak amongst themselves when necessary, but that like the nature of the Neon Nightmare it's something that they keep a Ghoulish secret.
>>
>>42029612
The fourth one was just meant to be a madcap, rip-roaring romp through town as one or more characters fling newspapers off the back of a She-Ghoul's scooter or motorcycle with sidecar. Things start getting even more crazy as, like >>42029650 suggested, Skitt's paper route takes a "shortcut" or two and things get decidedly more surreal.

The last one was of course a reference to what really happened during the integration of schools in America during the 1950s, and would be part of a much more tense social and political campaign taking place during the early years, shortly after the Ghouls' arrival on Earth.
>>
Someone broke into the convenience store you and your fellow coworkers work at and stole all the minty fresh gum. Now, you must frequent every party in your local area to find the culprit, and maybe score some horns while at it.
>>
>>42030192
Ghoul parties, I mean. On that note, how do Ghouls react to alcohol and what their alcohol tolerance is like? I imagine that they're probably light weights due to them being smaller than humans.
>>
>>42030222
They could be, or like artificial mint flavor it could have a different or additional physiological effect.

Maybe it intoxicates Ghouls just the same as it does us, but also brings their perceptions more in-line with a Human's? Narrows or muddies their perceptions somehow?
>>
Honestly, I'm kind of throwin' my vote in that the world has become more surreal and magically realist since the Ghouls came through. So not just creatures and flora from the NN finding its way to Earth. So kind of like the stuff where you're on Skitt's paper route and the houses moving away from them, or ending up finding a strange stained glass window that will drop things out of it every now and then, but children have begun to disappear so you might have to venture into it.
>>
>>42030296
Would make sense.
>>42030363
I think we should keep things on a smaller scale. Localized reality warps and some bleeding from the Neon Nightmare are fine but nothing too "out there". The ghouls have caused warps of perception, but not physical things to happen to the world except bringing flora fauna and horns.
>>
>>42030363
I could definitely see that.

Earth and the Neon Nightmare are like interdimensional next-door neighbors, and perhaps whatever happened to the Neon Nightmare to make the Ghouls leave is strong enough that it's bleeding over into Earth's reality.
>>

Time distortions and 'flux' become minor weather events in the years following the Ghouls. These events are relatively minor but most people avoid them if they can because of the discomfort and confusion of being in such an event.

Typically Flux storms happen like this; You're in your kitchen making a sandwich, and then a flux storm passes over. You take out the ingredients. Then you eat your sandwich. Then you assemble the sandwich. This is kind of thing that happens in a flux. If a person manages to 'cheat' reality by eating a sandwich then not making it, or having their cake and eating it too, reality tends to snap into place harder around them including making those things just 'disappear' to pay for the lost resources.

Most people don't mind this, its natural and normal. However some daredevils try to game the system.

The most famous example is the money game. Take a box or wallet with 20 dollars in it, then walk into a flux zone. Leave this on the ground for a few minutes, then pick it up, take out the money, and walk out of the flux zone. After it passes, your return to the zone. Basically you are hoping that time recenters itself when you left the wallet on the ground; so you'll find the money STILL IN THE WALLET as well as out of the wallet. You'll have two identical bills with the same serial numbers and everything. If you do this on and significant amount of money you'll be caught and it is highly illegal, but younger people will try to do stuff like this to copy a few bills or just to show off to their friends. It should be noted that this is gambling because occasionally you will leave the area without the money, then reenter and the flux zone will have centered on the empty wallet instead, meaning you now lost the bill entirely.
>>
>>42031161
Now this is some pretty cool stuff.
>>
>>42031161
I like this a lot. As bizarre and otherworldly as it is, you've made it feel commonplace and normal within the context of the setting.

>>42031160
It did turn out pretty adorable.

Okay, so Neon Nightmare animals are considerably larger than most of our common animals. We've got car sized lizard creatures, deer-bat things, and some blue long tongued man sized thing.

How can a human successfully acquire one of these pets for their own? This itself has the makings for a quest.
>>
>>42031161
People have set up true gambling halls within a flux zone, adding an entrance fee to go in and try to game the system within a private establishment.
>>
>>42031401
I'd imagine that there are a lot of smaller critters too, but they're all biological mish-mashes and nearly all of them carry some sort of danger to owning or encountering them.

Take things like Mogwai from Gremlins, Tribbles from Star Trek and Stitch from Lilo and Stitch as examples.
>>
>>42031401
You'd probably need a liscense showing that you have the capabilities of taking care of such an animal and their biology. Taking a government sponsored course on Neon Nightmare physiology so you know what's poisonous to certain species that have appeared from the NN. Probably registered vendors, lots of signatures and an understanding of what you're undertaking.
>>
>>42031401
Would it be easier for a human to take care of a NN animal, or a ghoul to take care of an earth animal?
>>
>>42031534
It would be easier for a Ghoul to take care of an earth animal, I would imagine.
>>
>>42031534
Ghoul's would probably have an easier time since most earth pets are a manageable size. Less strain on their budget, though they might not understand their diet super well.
>>
>>42031597
>>42031662
The main issue is that ghouls don't necessarily know what's normal earth-animal behavior, so they sometimes don't understand when their pets are sick.

>>
>>42032182

Like most things, ghouls just want to be chill about it. Because their understanding of the world was probably much different in the NN, they probably have their own beliefs that they don't like to talk about. They obviously wouldn't like being discriminated, but who are they to judge what the humans believe when they're living on our planet.

And, because many ghouls want to adopt Earth culture, some of them may even take up some Earth religions, not necessarily believing in them, but wanting to better understand the concept of human faith.

nah the Catholic Church would be incredibly accepting of the Ghouls, it already has policy in place for the possibility of Aliens, so for a race that's actually related to us, however warped is simple in comparison

also wouldn't be surprised if the Church would designate St Christopher(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Christopher) as the Patron Saint of the Ghoul race, due to his already existing status as Patron Saint of Travelers(also while it's more of a Orthodox tradition, there's also the tradition of depicting St Christopher as having a dog's head)

>>42032420
I imagine it varies, like something like Buddhism is rather easy for a Ghoul to get into, meanwhile converting one to Christianity is a lot more work, but Ghouls who have been converted(or were raised Christian) tend to be very devout by Ghoul standards

How long would it take for Ghouls to gain the ability to vote? I would reckon it wouldn't take long, but there's the issue of citizenship and prerequisites to vote, same thing with gaining a licence.

Ghouls have rather forgiving attitudes and a live-and-let-live philosophy, so unless a religious group as actively out doing them harm I think they would try to turn the other cheek whenever they could. Many religious groups I think would slowly come to change their negative views on Ghouls after a generation or two, as the refugees proved through their behavior and interactions with Mankind to be very different than the demons and hellspawn that they were expected to be. The presence of the Ghouls would very likely spark myriad theological debates and might even start a few cults dedicated to them and the Neon Nightmare.

There would definitely be some religious sects or churches in particular that would steadfastly refuse to accept Ghouls as people, and would stage protests and rallies against them and those who befriend them even a generation after their arrival.

I also think that there would be a good number of Ghouls who would take part in Earthly religions for a variety of reasons like personal curiosity, cultural exchanges or because they really are looking for something to believe in.

>Alright, yeah, I was one of the people on the initial project. You’re not supposed to know that, and you’re technically not cleared for the stuff I’m about to tell you, but you need to know and I owe you. More than you realize, I think. Don’t spread it too widely and I should able to keep my ass out of the fire. Okay?

>First: the name “Neon Nightmare” was ours, not theirs. The phrase comes from the transcribed recording of the first guy we sent in. It’s hard to make sense of those reports, by the way. People talk about Las Vega, Tir Na Nog, bad acid trips, all kinds of things. One guy pulled something from Hindu mythology; I don’t remember the details. I don’t know how the ghouls got wind of the name “Neon Nightmare,” but they liked it and it stuck. We still don’t know their word for it. There’s a lot of things we don’t know.

No, I’m not going to tell you how to get there. That’s for your own fucking good. Very disappointing, I know. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t get there by getting high, or stoned, or whatever the kids are calling it these days. We did use hallucinogens in the project— not LSD, actually; the compound’s still classified, and thank god for that, because it’s powerful stuff— but not for that reason. The Neon Nightmare is… intense. It’s a hard environment for humans to handle, cognitively speaking. Hallucinogens blunt the impact. Think protection, not transport. Incidentally, it’s not even clear that the subjects were hallucinating while they were there; the drug may actually behave differently in the Nightmare.
>>

Margaret, Ethel and (Chloe?) are a great way to explore Human-Ghoul relations.
>>
>Second: the ghouls aren’t potheads. They’re not humans and they don’t fit human stereotypes. Never forget that. Above all, they’re not stupid. There are some world-class minds out there, ghouls that could do analytical topology as easily as you could read “The Cat in the Hat,” and they’re probably working as surfing instructors or pizza delivery guys— because they want to. The ghouls are pretty quiet about their capabilities. Maybe they just don’t like showing off.

>Third: You know how they have that refugee story? As far as we can tell, that’s actually true. They’re not demons or conquerors or anything like that, no matter what the anti-ghoul groups tell you. It’s not my department, but from what I hear we’ve done quite a lot of monitoring and some, uh, interviews, and so far nothing has turned up an ulterior motive or even much in the way of planning. We can’t call it conclusive, because we know that ghouls are damn good at keeping secrets, but that’s the way it looks from everything we’ve got.

>…See, I know that from the outside we look like the stereotypical all-knowing government conspiracy, right? That’s not how it is. We’re flying blind, we’re lost at sea, pick your favorite metaphor. They have at least one native language, for sure, but we can’t speak it. We can visit the Neon Nightmare, but we can’t make sense of it. We don’t even have a complete grasp of their physiology— if it’s really the same thing as a physiology in the terrestrial sense.
>>
>What worries me is that the world is getting weirder, and we don’t know how weird it’s going to get. There’s an entire scientific field devoted to “extranatural events” now, but it hasn’t come up with much. Today it’s ghouls. Fair enough, they’re not so bad. Tomorrow… what? Could Earth wind up like the Nightmare? Will we have to emigrate the way they did? I don’t know. Nobody knows. I’m not even sure how we could figure it out. It keeps me up at night.

I think a cool thing to do would be to actually expand on the why of Ghoul behavior. Like, why do they trend towards jobs that are low stress, low influence on large scale levels, and high in personal free time.

My personal idea is that for some reason Ghouls aren't big on controlling things or changing things unless they know for sure it's to help people. This is largely because they know that in their own history, the NN became what it was because of Ghoul, well, there's not exactly a human word to describe what they did but a mix between philosopher-sorcerer-architect helps, "interference" to use a nicer word. So after the Ghouls very definitely changed how the NN functioned and led(or contributed) to the state the NN is in. Which has impressed itself on Ghoul culture such that they go for that live let live and hands off attitude towards the world.
>>
>>42034876, >>42034820, >>42034726, >>42034501

I like the idea that Ghouls LOVE Human holidays the world around, but that they don't quite understand or follow a lot of the most common traditions that these holidays bring with them.

Are there any holidays or holy days that the Ghouls have brought over with them from the Neon Nightmare? Either secretive or commonly known?
>>
>>42034940
There's some previous ideas that would support your views. There are a few traditional ghouls and old ghoul leaders that came over from the NN, but the majority of ghouls don't like to follow them or their traditional, secretive customs. It's believed that whatever happened, there's some resentment between the common ghouls and whatever their form of leadership was during their exodus to Earth.
>>
>>42034959
I suggest a secretive, but "well known" ghoul holiday to be nicknamed "Scream Day" by the humans.

Basically, ghouls are encouraged to be having general parties and be singing songs in their language. However, these particular songs to the human ear sound like nothing more than a loud screech, with slight variations in tempo and pitch. From what could be wiggled out of the secretive ghouls, the songs are very difficult to translate to human, but most of the Scream Day songs are actually ballads of sorts, describing specific events in ghoul history. One could say that the ghouls are literally singing timelines, and that the random pitch and tone changes are like discussing specific dates or events within those timelines.

>Your old lady friends said bring food, pizza's food. Don't see what the big deal is.

>>42034959
Possibly a simple festival, taking place during the summer, similar to Day of the Dead, where they give offerings to their ancestors or something?
>Young adults give their dead grandparents mint gum.

Another idea is a dual species holiday celebrating the day the Ghouls were formally accepted onto Earth.
>>
>>42035149
I really like that.

Humans know it happens and that it is a holiday or holy day of some sort, and know some of what the celebration entails, but the rest is shrouded in typical Ghoulish cultural secrecy.
>>
>>42034959
A very traditional ghoul holiday, a nameless holiday, it seems, has "ghoul leaders" take a small group of ghouls into a secluded area, like the woods or on a boat at sea. No one is allowed to talk about what happens in these groups, but many ghouls will describe it as "really boring and not fun at all, man."

If the group of ghouls notices a human or someone not part of the initial group watching them, they will simply do nothing until they leave.

I've made a few posts about 'magic' in the threads earlier, and people seemed to misunderstood. I don't mean like Wizards, I mean people who can to a degree manipulate reality warping from the flux zones.

>About 1/10th of the population is 'Sensitive'
>Sensitive people tend to have some of the sensory powers of the opposite race; Ghouls tend to get more detailed senses to size and number along with their colors and textures and Humans tend to gain some degree of seeing the alien colors of the Neon Nightmare. The primary ability of having both is one can easily tell when something is recently gated from another dimension, and can visibly see flux zones.

Even more rare then the sensitive people are people with actual 'talents' revolving around flux. All of them work essentially the same way; there is a degree of need to absorb free radicals from flux. Basically they have to touch recently gated Ghouls or spend time in flux zones, or people who have been in flux zones recently, this stores up the quantum uncertainty.

From these types comes a few 'savants' with a single ability. Anyone with more then one are even more exponentially rare.

>Retrievers
These people can basically influence an object, by making it both 'with them' and 'not with them'. They can later retrieve these objects from their person as if with them the whole time. This makes them incredibly dangerous in a fight and a nightmare for any law enforcement. Essentially they can touch their gun in the morning and say 'you're not with me', then once they get past a security checkpoint they say 'alright I *did* bring it this morning after all' and find themselves with it, past the security. As you can see, this is a pretty big deal. There is a lot of controversy about these people being registered.

>Shifters
These people can move themselves around in their own timeline to change position. For example, they can appear 10 feet away if you reach out to grab them. They move back in their timeline.
>>
File: Portal in time.jpg (67 KB, 561x412)
67 KB
67 KB JPG
>Freeloaders

These people can make things happen as if they did them over time, but do them instantly. For instance, clean up a messy room in a second. However they need to 'make up' this extra work in the hours following, essentially unable to do work or change in the physical world for a time. After an especially momentous task (one such story includes a prisoner escaping by hammering down a wall with a hammer he had hidden in his cell, but the wall was broken down in a split second and the hammer smashed to shit as if it was used all that time); the person is almost like a ghost and almost unable to interact with the world in a meaningful way, in a quantum sense.

Most people will do some repetitive and futile task to offload this cost; literally called 'Offloading'. Really skilled people can just sit on the floor and meditate, and during that time they fire off neurons and small muscle spasms that are counting off for that time they spent. In addition; people who do this tend to finish the action very tired or beat up, essentially taking all the damage they would have taken all at once.

The final type of gift is the rarest of all and the most flexible; its essentially Warping reality using some of these same concepts above. These are the true Mages of the world and are incredibly dangerous and feared. They can do far more with less cost, but still require flux and quantum uncertainty to build up to their changes.

Anybody like this stuff?

>Gets along with other ghouls much better than he does with humans
>Not that he has anything against them, he just doesn't really know what to say to them
>He's always moving away from groups for "private phone calls"

>In reality, he's probably none of these things

>Pickman
>a rare example of a Ghoul with a temper
>very large by Ghoul standards at almost 8 feet in height
>moved to Shorehaven after some trouble in Los Angeles where he grew up(he won't specify when asked, although the local police and the priest at the local Catholic Church both know what said troubles were)
>luckily Shorehaven is peaceful enough that he's been able to reign his temper in for the most part
>has taken up painting and sculpture since moving here(oddly enough he doesn't like "Ghoul" art all that much and takes Gustave Dore and Wayne Barlowe as his primary influences for his style)
>and yes Pickman is fully aware of the literary source for his name, claims his parents had an interesting sense of humor by Ghoul standards

What are you saying?

I'm not exactly sure, but I'm pretty sure alcohol works on the brain by disrupting electrical pathways, and KY works on anything even remotely like our biology - fruit flies to fruit bats.

Given that, ghouls should get drunk too - but drunk should be perceived very differently - giving them perceptive lag time, maybe, or something.
>>
>Crux is a teenage ghoul, goes to high school, lives a simple life.
>Public speaker at heart, he reads people well, though he sometimes forgets that humans can't see or sense everything ghouls do.
>Leader of the senior student body at Shorehaven High, well liked.
>In the summers he volunteers with a marine biologist who stops in Shorehaven for a short time to study the fish population.
>Likes to work with his hands, though his painted art is crap even by ghoul standards, so he tends towards metalworking and sculptures.
>>
>>42039351
I've sort of been imagining the Neon Nightmare like a tropical island-themed Moebius illustration.
>>
>In Shorehaven, there is an urban legend about a monster running about, nicknamed "The Koondle Doondle"
>Imagine a ghoul, but covered with neon colored hair, and with multiple pairs of horns on its head
>The legend says it came out from a reality warp at the bottom of the ocean, and sneaking out onto the beach at night to eat ghoulish and human children alike
>Most people believe that it's just a story to scare ghoulish and human children from going out to the beach too late at night, mainly because it's description is meant to worry both ghouls and humans
>Humans would naturally be scared of some monster covered in horns and hair, like some sort of spiked bigfoot
>It would scare ghoul children not because of its physical appearance, but because of its neon colored hairs, which are said to change colors in just a way to "speak" nasty things to the ghouls

>He's a paranoid human male, around 40-50 years old
>He lives near the edge of town in a small little home, known to be filled to the brim with guns

>He has a natural distrust in everyone, but especially in ghouls
>He will sell you a gun if you have a license to use firearms and you've earned his trust, however.

Is Shorehaven on the East Coast, West Coast, or Gulf Coast? That kind of small, Christian town kind of screams either Texas or Massachusetts to me. If Texas, maybe north of corpus Christi.
>>
>>42039801
He's found that cod and scallops are both making a comeback like you wouldn't believe, huge gains in size, health, and population.

This summer, he found a cod with horns.
>>
>>42039952
Let's go with that then. I was thinking West coast at first due to living there. But you're right, town like Shorehaven would probably fit the southern beaches a bit more.

Maybe the reason ghouls are so chill in our world is because the colours are so muted and relaxing in comparison. They enjoy colour, but to them earth is like the peaceful countryside and the nightmare was, even before stuff started to really go to shit, like a bustling city filled with constant distractions.

This was a good thread, OCs and a singular setting to launch off from.
>>
>>42040521
Agreed. This idea's been one of my recent /tg/ favorites. Maybe we can have another thread some time if any of us manages to run a game in this setting. Well done gents!
>>
Is it wrong that this setting reminds me a lot of Steven Universe?
>>
This all would likely be a bit in the future, yeah? Like near future. Technology advances fast, though. They can already grow organs in labs. Imagine growing ghoul organs. Could they be implanted in human bodies? What effect would this have?

If they figure out a method of attaching nerves and optic cords and stuff, I'd totally have a ghoul eye grown or something, and replace one of my eyes with it. Keep it covered with an eyepatch most of the time so it doesn't fuck with me too much. Sorta ease my way into seeing some crazy fucking shit, man. That'd be neat.
>>
>>42041210
I would imagine if ghoul to human transplants are going on, they'd be pretty hush hush at this point. Ghoul and human biology is so weird and different from each other that the potential negative effects may make it very taboo at this point.

But that would be a very interesting quest hook.
>>
>>42041210
Probably 2020 or so, they've had to integrate into human society to the point of trust so 20 years if not more past 1990
>>
>>42041210

Seems like their physiology would be largely incompatible with ours. Also, governments would regulate the SHIT out of stuff like that.
>>
>>42041256
Holy shit, though, I'd jump on that. I'm one step removed from extreme body modders with the only difference being that there isn't any worthwhile mods to install yet, man. Scarification and extreme piercings can take a hike, all I want is a pair of horns and an eye that can see some real fucking color.
>>
>>42041316
You can get your horns by just having sex with ghouls, and even though you might see cool new colors with ghoul eyes, that also means you might actually understand why the things that scare them actually scare them, and that might not be fun.
>>
>>42041264
Anytime between now and 2020 would probably work, if the Ghouls first started appearing between 1987 or so and 1990.

I'd REALLY try to keep extreme sci-fi stuff away though.
>>
>>42041363
Maybe. But that's why I only do one, and I wear an eyepatch.

Or drink a little too much and see a little too much shit one night and spend the rest of the evening with a screwdriver and a nice hospital bed.
>>
>>42041375
Yeah, nearly nothing has changed from where I'm planning my players to start. I want to use shorehaven so probably maybe mid 2000s. Flux is a thing, but not anything too stupid.
>>
>>42041471
Oh dude, you're gonna host a game in this setting?

What are your plans, man?
>>
>>42041471
What's say you start a new thread once you have intel to report back, friend?
>>
>>42041491
So far possibly some sort of flux infecting the fish and the party finding something from the NN leaking into the water. Since there'll be no figures to handle, I don't have to handle complicated combat scenarios. It'll be something different for my players since they like DnD but we can never make it work. A oneshot or twoshot probably.

>>42041532
That may take a while sadly. I'll update when I can, but one friend is in Germany at the moment so I have to wait until he gets back in early september.
>>
>>42041574
Interesting. Hopefully your group will be able to handle the chillax mode.
>>
Best of luck to you, game-runner!
>>
>>42041797
Grazie. My biggest concern right now is to get the cynic of the group to suspend his disbelief and not play his usual character, branch out as it was.

What system you planning on? The only good slice-of-life-ish (for lack of a better term) ones I can think of would be GURPS and nWoD mortals.
>>
>Francine, Roy and Letti are a trio of youths who work as cashiers at a popular local convenience story in Shorehaven and are nearly always seen about town as a trio. Though a Ghoul, Letti is considered to be pretty cute even by normal Human standards but is also exceedingly shy, a fact which her two friends keep trying to change through repeatedly setting her up on dates.
>>
>>42042716
Trying my hand at GURPS this time around. I have three weeks to learn the system and set everything up.
>>
>>42042755
I've tried it after loving the idea, but I found it too crunchy. Getting balanced chargen is pretty damn hard. My advice would be to only run it after having played it under someone good at the system. Or at least get advice from a pro. Besides, nWoD mortals fits the idea pretty well.
>>
>>42042783
Okay, thanks anon.
>>
>>42042506
>You're gonna love it in Shorehaven, everyone's nice here, even the criminals
>"Hey Bob, you still owe me for that weed, don't make me steal that new game you got!"
>>
Shamelessly stealing an idea from the "Animatrix:"

>The place the Flux is strongest in Shorehaven is in the ruins of one particular old building in one particular neighborhood, where the constantly shifting state of reality is often exploited by the town's youth for their own amusement. So far no one has revealed the location of this place and no one has been hurt there, but as is the case with all locations with strong Flux, it's only a matter of time before something dangerous happens.

Go with Cortex. It's the best rules-light, narrative-focused system you're going to find, and it's easy to adapt to this kind of slice-of-life thing. You (as the GM) can build skills for anything you want, no problem at all.
