Dark Tournament here we come!

Time to gather a team, train the fuck out of everyone and then come up with a cool name and awesome outfits.

I don't know if Kara or Aalgan will join our team, but if they do we've got a full set

The Dark Tournament.

From what Kasai has told you, it's perhaps the most dangerous and brutal competition on the entire planet. Sixteen teams of apparitions, demons, and, on rare occasion, humans, compete in fierce battles for glory and riches.

The last winner of the Dark Tournament was apparently your predecessor as Spirit Detective, someone named Yusuke Urameshi. That tournament was though to be the last, as the stadium was destroyed, and most of the wealthy individuals in charge of the tournament were killed.

But, thanks to men like Disanto, the tournament has been resurrected.

The teams are meant to consist of five fighters each, while a substitute may be called in if a fighter is killed. Kasai, despite obviously being terrified of this competition, has volunteered to help you fight. She has also told you that Koenma will be acting as the team manager, and, as such, Kara will be part of your team.

You have three fighters so far. You're pretty sure Bruce will join if you ask him to, and Aalgan will if Koe commands him. The Tournament begins in a month, and Kasai has advised you to train harder than ever before to prepare for it.

With that settled, you go to find Bruce, apparently waking him up when you knock on his apartment door.

Bruce grins. "Do you even need to ask? Let's kick some demon ass!"

You smile. "Train hard. The demons in this tournament won't be like the ones you've fought before."

"I'll start training as soon as I get changed," he promises, turning to go back into his apartment.

"Oh yeah, what kind of skull do you want on your suit?" you ask.

He thinks it over, then shakes his head. "Nah, I'll choose my own outfit."

For the next month, you train harder than you have in your entire life. Returning to Koe, you undergo trials that make your previous training feel like a vacation, as you're forced to sleep hanging over a pit of fire, run through a minefield blindfolded, and do all sorts of things you're pretty sure will haunt your nightmares for years to come.

Kasai trains hard, but, true to her word, trains you as well, teaching you better mastery of your flame attacks. Now when you shoot torrents of flame, you can change their direction and make them follow a foe.

Koe's training doesn't lead to any more techniques, but you grow far more powerful by training with him.

Bruce gets Aalgan to continue training him. You aren't sure what they've been doing, but judging by the way Bruce looks every time you see him, they're training hard.

Kara's training, you know little about, though you imagine it's intense. You have very little contact with her in the month leading to the tournament.

But, at last, the fateful day arrives.

Kaya will arrive shortly to transport you and Bruce where you need to go. Kasai, Aalgan, and Kara will be meeting you there.

Bruce leans against the wall outside your apartment, his expression oddly serious. You don't usually know him to look very concerned, but it's clear that he's worried. You can't blame him, if this tournament is half as bad as Kasai said it is, you think there's very good reason to be afraid.

Bruce puts on a brave face as he looks at you, though his smile is still weak. "Yeah. We'll show those stupid demons who's boss!"

You tell him to wait for you while you head back into your apartment, where your father is also trying his best to put on a brave face. You're positive he doesn't understand exactly what you're getting yourself into, after all, you don't understand it yourself. But, he understands enough to be plenty worried about you.

"Good luck," he tells you, his tone making it sound almost like a prayer. "I'll be rooting for you."

The two of you share a hug before you leave your apartment, possibly for the last time in your entire life, and go over to Lucy's. When she opens her door, she wears a worried expression.

"So, you're leaving, then?" she asks.

"I always hated that you were constantly getting yourself into fights, wasting your time rumbling with guys from other schools when you could have been doing something productive. I thought all of your fighting was a waste of time, and I always worried you'd get hurt."

She smiles. "But, I was wrong. That fighting is why you're...whatever you are now, and, no matter how badly you've gotten hurt, you've always come back. So I want you to go out there like every other time, kick some ass, and come home like you always do, okay?"

Before you can answer, Kaya seemingly materializes out of thin air, drawing both of your attention.

"Hey, guys!" she greets happily, hopping off of her oar and giving you each a smile. "Are you ready to go?"

You smack Bruce over the head.

"Oww! What the hell, man?" he asks, rubbing his head and glaring at you.

"Yup, ready to go," you answer.

"Well then, hop on!" Kaya tells you, providing an example by jumping onto her oar and waiting for the two of you to join her.

You hop on, and, still rubbing his head and muttering under his breath at you, Bruce does the same. Kaya's oar rises, and before you know it, you're flying over a dark forest in a place you don't recognize. A flickering flame in the distance draws your attention, and Kaya heads right for it.

As the oar descends, you see that it's a campfire, surrounded by dozens of demons of all kinds. Some are short, some are tall. Most are male, but some are female. Some have horns, others have extra eyes or limbs, and some just look like oddly colored humans.

Kaya lands you on the edge of the assembled crowd, watching them nervously.

"Well, here we are!" she informs you. "Now, I've got to run, but I'll see you at the tournament!"

She rises into the air and vanishes from sight.

"Uh...is it me, or are a lot of those things staring at us?" Bruce asks.

Many of the demons are indeed staring at you, and none of them look particularly happy with you. Some bare their fangs or claws, while others whisper angrily to one another.

"I smell humans," a red creature with a single horn on his bald head comments.

"Yes, those two," a three-eyed demon confirms. "They're human, alright."

"Good, I was getting hungry," a larger demon comments.

"What's your name?" the three-eyed demon demands.

"John Luke," you answer, continuing to scan through the crowd for the others.

You ignore the excited whispers that your name shoots through the crowd, but one person does get your attention.

Kasai steps from the shadows cast by the towering trees, though for a moment you have difficulty recognizing her in her new outfit. Sure, it's relatively similar, but red was always her color. Now, her cloak and leotard are both black, and she has the image of a burning demon skull on her stomach.

"Hello," she greets as she approaches, looking between you and Bruce. "I'm glad to see you both."

You're not sure if she's really that naïve or not. In any case, you change the subject.

She nods. "The girl went into the woods, and Aalgan is talking to some of the other fighters. I believe we will be departing soon."

You decide to find Kara, and go into the woods. You aren't sure where she is, so you feel around for her Spirit Energy. She isn't exactly broadcasting it, but you do sense a quick burst of it not too far away.

You begin moving in that direction before you realize you're being followed. Stopping in your tracks, you look over your shoulder to see the one-horned, red-skinned creature from before approaching.

"So, you're going for a walk?" he asks as he begins to draw closer. "Lucky me, I get you all to my self. And killing you will make me famous."

He draws a dagger, tossing it into the air and catching it as a wicked grin comes to his face. "The poison on this dagger is enough to kill any man. All I need is one good cut, and you're finished."

He chuckles to himself before breaking into a run and coming at you. "So hold still!"

Your body erupts into flames, making the creature falter, stopping dead in his tracks and staring in confusion and disbelief. The flames on your feet vanish, and the pattern continues up your body until you're clad in your full suit, making you an imposing figure, and clearly frightening the demon in front of you.

Crying out in fear, he turns and tries to run.

You thrust your left hand towards him, hitting him in the back with your Spirit Blast and sending him sprawling. You step towards him and use your right foot to roll him onto his back. He appears dead, but you step on his throat for good measure.

"So, I'm not the only one who's popular with these guys," you hear a female voice say behind you.

You turn to see Kara walking towards you, blood spattered on her face, which you suspect is not her own. She stops a few feet away.

A few might know I'm Spirit Detective, but I'm still new, more of them will know about you."

That means you'll need to be careful with just about everything in regards to this tournament. You can expect no mercy, and you can expect to be targeted by just about everyone.

"How'd your training go?" you ask. "Want to compare notes?"

She smirks. "It was fantastic. I learned a few new tricks, and got a second teacher. I might even be as strong as you now."

Turning around, you find Aalgan looking at you with a smirk on his face.

"I mean, Bruce has improved a lot, but he's still going to die if he fights in this tournament," Aalgan explains. "He's too weak for a competition like this."

Can we make him our manager and then switch him out if someone else gets killed or injured? Koenma did that before. Could work for us. Have him literally learn everything he can from other teammates. The three of you leave the woods, and the three corpses behind, returning to the crowd of demons gathered around a slowly dying fire. You spot Kasai and Bruce standing away from the group, trying not to draw too much attention or start a fight. Still, quite a few demons are giving them looks that you don't like.

Your trio rejoins them, and the five of you stand in silence until a voice that almost makes you burst into laughter shouts to the crowd.

A man who looks like a short version of every story book pirate you've ever seen comes walking up to the crowd, smoking a pipe as he looks over the crowd.

"Alright you lot, it's time to leave for the Dark Tournament," he announces. "Now everybody come aboard, and try to do it without killing anyone."

"Hold on, we're missing two of our teammates!" a demon from the crowd calls.

"Yeah, our team's missing a man, too," another announces.

"Well then, we'll send a hitman out to find them," the pirate man replies. "Now, for those of you who want a chance to live, come aboard."

Your group follows the crowd onto the boat, a rusty old thing that you're pretty sure is about as unsanitary as a ship can get. The demons mostly congregate in their own groups, but you do see some mingling going on.

"Well, this is boring," Aalgan comments. "Everybody on this ship is a weakling."

"Lord Koenma says this is where the preliminaries are held," Kara says. "The final team to enter the tournament will be decided here."

This is the preliminaries. This boat isn't meant to bring the all teams to the island, it's meant to weed out the weaklings.

Didn't anyone watch the cassette tapes that Koenma has? I brought some grapes over from Koe and he absolutely loves them.

A section of the deck opens up, and a large, round piece of stone rises above the ship. A ladder comes up with it, creating a path to the ring.

"So, choose your strongest fighter, and have him step into the ring!" the pirate instructs.

You leap up to the ring, bypassing the ladder altogether. The demons follow soon after, coming in all shapes and sizes. Some of them look fairly intimidating and dangerous, but you aren't sensing much Spirit Energy coming from them.

Should be an easy match.

You hear a stomp behind you, and look up to see the large demon from before standing above you, sniffing the air.

"Wait...you're that human!" he says eagerly. "Good, I can have my snack."

"Wait your turn," the three-eyed demon from before tells him. "I saw him first."

"The human is mine!" a muscular looking demon announces.

Soon, every last demon in the ring is arguing over who gets to kill you. Every last one, except the large demon that wants to eat you.

"Those idiots can argue, but you're gonna be my snack," he tells you, rubbing his belly.

"There are no rules!" the pirate explains. "If you leave the ring, you are disqualified! Last living fighter in the ring wins!"

The demons roar in excitement.

The large demon lunges at you, but grasps only empty air as you leap to the center of the ring, shouting to get the attention of the demons, and challenging them to attack.

They're more than happy to oblige, and come rushing at you together.

"I get his head!" one shouts.

"I get his arms!" another yells.

"You get nothing unless you get there first!" a third demon tells them as several fighters leap at you together.

You gather your Spirit Energy, and shoot it from all over your body, striking all of the demons that have come running for you. The nearest of the creatures are incinerated altogether, while most of the others are either thrown out of the ring, or fall dead to the ground. Even the demons at the edge of the ring aren't safe, the radius of your blast being rather large thanks to your high level of energy.

Five demons manage to rise again, but two of them immediately collapse, and you feel the life leaving them. The remaining three spread out to surround you, preparing to strike. None of them feel particularly special, and were probably just lucky.

The creature in front of you, a large beast with four legs and two powerful arms, cracks his knuckles and charges. You hear the other two demons scream and do the same.

You meet the four-legged demon's charge grabbing his fist as he throws a punch. Spinning, you toss him at the other two demons, hitting one and sending him sliding out of the ring with the four-legged creature.

The final demon manages to dodge, and keeps running. He swipes at you with clawed hands, but all you do is sidestep and kick him in the side of the head, sending him flying up past the pirate and falling into the water behind the ship.

"Well, it seems our sixteenth team will be a human one this year," the pirate says bitterly. "Assuming, of course, they make it to port alive."

You hear some laughter from below, and see the countless demons on the ship begin to converge on your team, while others run for the ladder or leap into the ring.

You step forward and thrust your hands towards the remaining demons. A massive torrent of flames explodes from your fingertips, engulfing the horde of apparitions, who collectively scream in agony as your fire consumes them.

It's a vision that you think might be a rather accurate recreation of hell. The creatures that don't die immediately run screaming in pain and crying for death. Some fling themselves over the side of the boat to extinguish the flames, crying out in despair as they realize that they've stranded themselves in the water.

It's not a pleasant sight, but your attack does its job, and soon you and your team are the only people remaining on the ship, except, of course for the captain.

"Nice work, kid," Aalgan compliments.

Kasai walks off, and as she leaves, you see that she has the image of a phoenix on her cloak. She floats up to the ring and sits on the edge of it, staring ahead of the ship as it sails.

Looking in the same direction, you see a landmass in the distance. That must be your destination.
