You are Giles, Master Thief, lover extraordinaire, and genuine son of a bitch.

What began as the the simple quest of a career thief out to steal a crown has turned into so much more.

While undercover in the palace you befriended the princesses, both big and small, were reunited with your sister and generally had a pretty good time.

On the night in which you were to steal the crown, disaster struck. The King and Queen were murdered in their beds, and the little princess would have suffered a similar fate had you not intervened.

Now Fate's Chosen needs the young girl to die in order to set Fate's path back on track and you, Devil that you are, are the only one who can stop him.

There have been some... complications along the way, but you're certain that you can come out on top.

For even the best laid plans can crumble on the whim of a Devil...

You look out your window at the city of Berhen. You've been here for less than a day, and you are bored out of your mind.

You stayed in Denton for about another week after your meeting with Laura and the others. You aren't quite sure why, but the atmosphere of your group has been reserved since then.

Selene hasn't been as bubbly, Marcy hasn't been as... Marcy, and even you have been feeling restless of late.
Kuma is the only one who hasn't been acting strange, and that alone says something.

Berhen is a city on the north coast of Laust. It saw a good many battles when Delemur tried to invade ten years ago. Te ciy itself still bears scars of those battles, and many of its people do as well.

You're here because it's a convenient location. The city is far enough north that the war is unlikely to find it, but not so far north as to make communication difficult.

But there has been little to no news. A lull has happened in the goings on of this war. You've done everything you can to ensure that the campaign along the south coast goes smoothly, and you've already started your work on what you believe will happen after that...

And now you're bored.

You sigh and look down at your hand, still holding the feather quill you were using to write letters an hour ago...

A feather...

You glance up at the keep of the castle here in Berhen. It sticks out and above the rest of the city, looking boldly out of place. Almost like a target...

Now there's an idea.

"Okay" You say, turning back to the room. "I'm bored"
"What do you want me to do about it?" Marcy asks.
"Not you" You say. "Hey Selene. Wanna go do something fun?"

Selene smiles. "Yeah!" She says.
"Alright then, let's go do something fun" You say.

"Hold it, where do you think you're going?" Marcy asks.
"Out" You say.
"Out where?" She asks.
"Out on the town" You say. "It's stifling in here, so I'm going out"

"With Selene?" She asks.
"Of course" You say. "If it's stifling for me then I can't possibly imagine how she must feel"

"And how does Selene feel?" Marcy asks.
Selene looks at you, and then back at Marcy. "Stiffled" She says.
"Stifled" You say.

Marcy puts a hand over her face. "Fine... just promise you won't do anything stupid" She says.
"Ahh, but where is the fun in life if one cannot do the occasional stupid thing" You say.
"Then promise me you'll come back in one piece" She says.

"That, I can promise" You say, before turning to Selene. "Shall we?"

Selene nods enthusiastically and hops over to your side.

"We'll be back in... some amount of time" You say. "I'd say leave the door unlocked, but it wouldn't really matter"

"Fine, fine" Marcy says.

You take Selene and walk out of the room. As you leave, you hear Marcy say "Hey Kuma. You ever played cards?"

"Where are we going?" Selene asks.

You smile.

"To the richer areas, to test your skills" You say.
"My skills?" She asks.

You flash her a lockpick from under your cloak, and she seems to understand. "Your skills" You say.
Selene smiles and nods.

The rich of Berhen live closer to the center of the city. It was apparently not always this way.

The city's center was turned into the 'rich area' after the war, as it was one of the few places that remained untouched after several sieges and captures, both attempted and succesful.

The streets aren't very lively around this area of the city, but other areas are. Berhen is supposed to come to life at night, which you were aware of when you came here. It's the whole reason why you picked an inn that was out of the way of all the traffic...

It takes a few minutes to reach the city's center, but before long the wooden buildings and shops give way to nicer stone buildings that get larger and larger as you get further in.

Yeah, this is definitely the place.

Now, to find smething suitable...

You and Selene stride quietly through the streets between the seemingly rich houses.

There's just one problem: seemingly.

To the untrained eye, these houses all belong to the wealthy. But your eye is nothing if not trained. Peeling paing, cobwebs in the windows, rotting steps... it's like a badly woven facade...

Selene hops excitedly alongside you, watching both her surroundings and you carefully. She looks unbearably cute in her little cloak...

You decide to cut to the chase and pick a house. One of these places is bound to have something worth stealing.

"Alright kiddo" You say. "Here's the deal. You're gonna get in there, take something that looks like it's worth something, and come back without getting caught"
"Kay" Selene says, making no attempt to hide her eagerness.

You go over the basics of a break in, and tell her to scream if she gets caught, before sending her on her way. You stay close by, keeping an ear out just in case.

Selene darts over to the house you picked and attempts to jump up to a window...

And can't get high enough...

She jumps a few more times, before puffing out her cheeks and glaring at the offending window...

She looks back at you, and you give her a thumbs up.

When you were younger you used to have this same problem, though you also used to run with a partner. Whenever something was too high, Klaus would boost you, or vice versa.

But Klaus wasn't always there, so more often than not you would have to find another way in or out...

Selene keeps focused on the window, trying to jump to it one more time before giving up and walking back towards you.

Just when you're about to berate her for giving up so easily, she turns, goes up to the proch of the house, grabs a chair, and brings it back to the window.

You close your eyes and chuckle. You were about to berate her for giving up, and then she made you look like a quitter in comparison. "Couldn't just give up on the window, eh kiddo?" You say.

Selene puts the chair down in front of the window and gets up on it, and from there she jumps up to the windowsill.

She gets a knee up on it, opens the window, and slides inside the house.

You watch in silence, keeping your ears pried for a scream that you hope doesn't come...

>[1/2]
>>
A few minutes later, Selene comes right back out that window. She slips out and down onto the chair, closing the window behind her and putting the chair back where she got it before walking back to you.

With a pastry in her mouth...

"Selene... where did you get that?" You ask.
She takes a bite of the pastry, munching on it with a smile. "You shaid take shomeshing datsh worf shomshing" She says, holding up the pastry to your scrutinization.

You take it from her hand and look it over. It looks well made, and quite possibly expensive... but it is still a pastry...

Selene swallows and smiles. "Did I do good?" She asks.

"I thought you would never ask" You say, taking a nibble off the pastry before handing it back. "Never change, Selene. Never change"

She grins and reclaims her prize, taking another bite from it while you chew through yours.

It is... impossibly soft, and incredibly sweet. Quite possibly one of the tastiest pastries you've ever tasted. And Selene just kinda... picked it out.

"So what are we doing now?" She asks.

"Well, now we go scope out the keep" You say.
"Why?" Selene asks.
"Because boredom is taking its toll on me, and there is bound to be something in that keep worth nabbing" You say. "Are you with me?"

Selene nods, and takes another bite out of her prize.

You put her back down and take her by the hand out of the richer area, to the keep. The keep is situated near the city's center, putting it within a stone's throw of where you held your 'test'.

"So what do we do now?" Selene asks, looking up towards the top of the keep.
"Now, we scope" You say. "look for ins, look for outs, look for dangers, look for weak points, etcetera"
"How do we do that?" She asks.

"Like this..."

Okay... looking for ins...

And looking...

Strange, you've never felt anxious about a job before. Could it be... stage fright?

You've never really brought along an audience before. Usually it's you and a partner...

"How about there?" Selene asks, pointing to a narrow firing window that's been a little scorched. You know there's an actual name for those, but you've never bothered to learn it.

You circle around a bit, and see that it's not just scorched; it's damaged. The window, normally used by archers to fire from, has had a little chunk taken out of one side. It's still narrow, but maybe you could fit through it. Worst case scenario, Selene could get in this way and you'll find another way in and meet up with her.

You look down at her, and she gives you a big smile. Okay, so maybe she isn't an audience. But time will tell whether she actually qualifies as a partner...

You head up to the window and show Selene how to climb walls like these, before attempting to squeeze into the broken window.

It's tight, and you could probably fit through; but it wouldn't be easy. On the other hand, this keep shares its design with several others that you've broken into over the years. If you're right, there is a hidden exit that opens from the inside nearby. You could send Selene in and get her to open it for you...

Or scrap the whole window idea and find another way in.

"Are we gonna go in there?" Selene asks quietly.
"No" You say, pulling your head from to broken stone.
"Why not?" She asks.

"I can't fit, first of all" You say. "You could go in and pop open a door for me, but that's more danger than I feel comfortable putting you in"
"I can do it!" She says.
"I'm sure you could" You say. "But I promised Laura that I would keep you safe, and sending you alone into unknown territory is pretty much the exact opposite of that"

"Awww..." She says.
"Good hustle though" You say. "I never even noticed that window. If we had a few days I might consider chipping it down until I could fit through. As it is, I will definitely consider it an emergency escape route for that reason"
"How?" She asks.
"See the cracks?" You ask, pointing to the areas around the scorchmarks. "The stone is weak here. An explosion would blow the window wide open"

Selene looks at it, and nods. "Got it" She says.

"Now then, we've lingered here for too long. Let's go see about finding that other way in, shall we?" You ask, offering Selene your hand.

Selene bounces as she takes your hand. "Kay!" She says.

>[1/2]
>>
Five minutes later, you find yourselves at the keep's water outlet, where there is a locked grate keeping intruders out.

"Don't get frustrated" You tell Selene. "Take your time. Get a feel for how the lock might look from the inside"

Selene face is scrunched up in concentration as she works her picks into the padlock keeping the grate closed.

"It's harder than the practice ones" She says.
"That just means you have to work at it" You say. "First off, tell me how many tumblers it has"

Selene wiggles her picks around for a minute. "3" She says.
"Very good" You say. "Start with the first one. On a lock this old, you may need to apply some force. But it should give a little once you have the first one in the right spot"

Selene works a little more, then looks up with a smile. "I got it!" She says.
"Shhhhhh! Keep your voice down" You say.
"Sorry" She whispers.

You listen for any people approaching before responding. "Not a problem, keep going" You say.

Selene spends another few minutes working through the 2nd and 3rd pins, until finally.

*click!*

The lock comes open, and she gives you a smile that brightens up the quickly darkening evening.

"Goooood job!" You say, ruffling her hair. "Now that we're in, we can check things out"
"What first?" She asks.

"First, we get an idea of the layout of this place" You say.
"How do we do that?" She asks.
"Sneaking around, and remembering what we see" You say. "I like to map places out in my head, though that takes some practice."

"Got it" Selene says.

The two of you make your way up from the outlet and skirt the edges of the courtyard using the bushes for cover.

There are a lot of soldiers gathered here, all standing in formation. Could this be some type of military excercise?

You make you way into a door leading away from the courtyard, and start moving around the hallways. If all the soldiers are out there, getting around in here should be much easier.

But this place is still controlled by Laust, and being Harth's spymaster you are kind of obligated to find out what all of those soldiers are doing there...

You'll have to dip into the commander's offices and see what you can see...

Later. For now, it's snooping time.

As you make your way through the hallways, you find the layout incredibly similar.

This place uses a design that Laust used to build several forts all along the north coast when it became clear that Delemur might attack. It's a simple design, each fortress was built quickly, and when Delemur arrived they found the coastline was very much prepared for them.

Of course, it didn't stop them from waging a long and bloody conflict, but that's besides the point. Armory, barracks, courtyard, towers, gates, everything is basicaly in the same place. So working off of a blueprint that you pretty much already have, you make your way around the keep.

You wind up having to scramble to evade detection on several occasions, as movement through the keep is rushed. Everyone seems to be running somewhere, which makes your usual method less effective.

But that raises questions. Questions like: why is everyone running?

They couldn't be deploying from here, could they? That would not be good at all. Harth's armies bypassed this place after they had been assured that it posed no threat, as the garrison was minimal. But what you saw in the courtyard was decidedly not minimal.

There weren't enough soldiers there to win a battle, but turning the tide of one...

"Oh... damn it all" You say.
"What's wrong?" Selene asks.
"Come on. Thievery will have to wait" You say.
"Why?" She asks.
"Because there's spy work that needs doing" You say.
"Okay" She says.

You smile and pat her head. It's good that she's understanding. Especially because you don't really have the time to explain why the spywork needs doing.

You and Selene head around the keep to where you're pretty sure the commander's offices are. Luckily, they're in the same spot as they were in the other one of these keeps you "visited". Though you can't for the life of you remember why you were there...

It'll come back to you eventually.

The two of you start rifling through papers looking for anything that might explain the mass of soldiers outside...

Looking for... bingo.

The soldiers aren't from Laust. They're all from Delemur; shipped over here in secret, in the hopes that they could stunt Harth's advances and possibly start pushing them back...

"Well, they'll have a hard time doing that now that I know" You say, stuffing the papers into your cloak.

"Who will have a hard time doing what?" A voice comes from the door. It's silky, and feminine, and...

You stand up, back still to the door, and pull Selene in front of you. "Hello Cassandra" You say.

"Funny meeting you here young man" She says. "I hadn't thought that you had been invited to this occasion"
"Yes, well. I have been known to crash events that I have not been invited to" You say. "As opposed to the ones I have been"

"I meant to apologize for that" She says. "Is the king still mad?"
You turn around, keeping yourself between her and Selene. "Mad? Why would he be mad?" You ask.
"Well, I did throw the heads of his heirs at his feet and then call their spectres down to try and murder him" She says. "I thought he might be a little sour about that"

"He takes it in stride" You say. "But I don't think he'd argue with having your head thrown at Roderick's feet"
"How callous of him" Cassandra says. "And after all I went through to bring his son home"
"His head" You say.

"I brought the rest of him too" She says. "It's not my fault that they never found it"

"I assume that the armies assembled in the courtyard have something to do with you?" You ask.
"It has everything to do with me" She says. "Traditional tactics are Roderick's strong suit, but gods forbid that he ever has to do anything underhanded. So he leaves that work to me"

"I'd say finding an ally in Delemur is perfectly standard" You say.
"The means by which our alliance was made was not" She says. "More than a few eggs had to be broken"

>[1/2]

"But an omlette was made" You say.
"A badly made, slightly runny omlette" She says. "But it'll do for now"

Good to know. You can have someone bring you the info on how they managed to secure this alliance, and then put some work into tearing it down... later.

"So I heard some interesting things about you from my Father" You say
"Like the fact that I dropped you off at his orphanage?" She asks.
"That, yes" You say.

"I figured that he'd recognize me" She says. "After all, I haven't aged a day"
"In 17 years?" You ask.
"No. One. Day" She says.
"Are you even human?" You ask.
"No" She says. "I was actually wondering when you'd figure that out"
"Why did you drop me off at the orphanage?" You ask.
"Because I had to put you somewhere" She says. "Otherwise I'd've been stuck with you"

"Are you my mother?" You ask.
"In a sense" She replies.
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?" You ask.

She shrugs, and turns back to the door. "I'll leave you with that information" She says. "You have about 5 minutes before I let the guards know you're here. If you're still here by then, you deserve what happens next"

And then she leaves the room.

"Well, right now things are going south" You say. "And so we are going"
She nods, but doesn't seem happy.

You sigh. Leave it to Cassandra to ruin a perfectly good night out. "Well, we're here so we might as well cause some havoc" You say, pulling out a dagger enchanted with Ember Spree from your cloak.

"Laying down smoke" You say, planting the dagger on the desk. "Ember Spree"

Sparks fly off of the dagger in every direction, and after a few seconds several things in the room are on fire.

You heft Selene up and put her on your shoulder as you run full tilt down the hall, barrelling past a few people as you make your way to... where?

The hidden exits on these keeps were made to vary, in case the enemy got a hold of the schematics for one, so that might be a bust. The front door, while always an option, doesn't tend to be a good option when time is of the essence and you have been discovered.

Then you remember the window... Selene could fit out, and you might be able to wedge it open with some magic or a bomb...

Or magic... you don't really carry bombs.

You draw from your mental map and make your way to the window as fast as your legs will carry you.

When you arrive, you heft Selene up to the opening. "Out you go" You say.

Selene wriggles through the window, and you can hear her hit the ground on the other side. But she gets back up and peers through. "Are you coming?" She asks.

Now that you can see it from this side, there's no way you would fit through there... The only spell you know that might damage it is a wind spell, which isn't guaranteed to break it open.

The hidden exit should be easy enough to find, and if push comes to shove you can always make a break for the front door.

The question is, where does Selene go?

"Selene, go" You say. "I promise I'll be there in a bit"
"Promise?" She asks.
"Promise" You say.

This exchange feels familiar for some reason, but you just can't place it...

Selene gives you a nod, and drops back down. You hear her hit the ground, and then you hear her footsteps as she runs away.

Okay. Back to the issue at hand.

You can hear footsteps above you. Likely soldiers responding to the fire, or soldiers searching for you. Either way, time is of the essence...

Might hinder the soldiers and give us some time to find the hidden exit

While searching for the exit, of course.

Here's a good place to start. You create a barrier to block the stairway, and head back down the hall. You duck into a room before being spotted by a group of soldiers running through the hall, and decide that here is as good a place as any to start another fire.

The soldiers pass, and you dart out and run in the opposite direction. You run up the stairs, and block them behind you. You then lay down a fog at the top of the stairs, and set another fire in the first room you come by.

"Okay, that's enough chaos... now for that exit" You say to yourself.

You run down the hall towards the back of the keep. The different keeps might have had different exit locations, but they are always around the same place...

You hear more soldiers coming from ahead of you, so you duck into another room. But they don't pass. You hear them assembling in front of the doorway instead.

"Come out. We know you're in there" One of them calls.

Fucking how?

Well... it doesn't really matter how they know. That they know is enough. But there is a window here. It's a bit of a fall, but you could make it...

So you have 2 options...

We might get injured from the fall, but we definitely can't fight against a group by ourselves.

I swear to god if you two got selene captured while I was gone I won't forgive you. Why would you ever leave her alone? Are you both retarded?

Your face contorts as you look back and forth between the window and the door, tapping your cane on the ground like you're somehow impatient with yourself.

Then the door bursts open, and you make your decision.

You crash through the window and fall, but you hit the ground much sooner than you expected.

"What?" You ask out loud.

You jump to your feet, ready to face whatever comes for you. But there's nothing...

You seem to be in a street somewhere... You don't recognize this place, and you've been pretty much everywhere at this point.

The buildings are stone, built in a style similar to what you would find in Alka-Habra. But somehow not...

And it's hot. Good gods is it hot!

"Welcome stranger" A man with a thick accent that you can't place says. You turn to face him, and see that his skin is dark, he's dressed in nothing but robes.

"Where is this?" You ask.
"This is Amereen" He says.
"Can you be more specific?" You ask.

"Amereen is a country south of the glass desert of Elemeer" A familiar, silky voice says.
"What? Cassandra!" You say, turning to face her. "How did I get here?"

"That was my doing" She says. "As much as I enjoy our little meetings, you needed to be out of the way for a while"

"But... how?" You ask.
"Don't you worry about that" She says. "If I were you, I would be worrying not about how I got here, but how I would be getting back"
"What?" You ask.
"Don't tarry" She says. "If you take too long, you'll miss the dark night. And that would be most unfortunate"

"Damn it, what the hell is with you?" You shout.

Cassandra smiles, and fades away. Leaving you stranded, over 1000 miles from where you need to be.

You let out a breath and grit your teeth. Mother or no, you are going to murder that woman.

But first, the task at hand. You turn back to the man. "I don't suppose you have any horses?" You ask him.

You have just over a month to make it back, and you WILL make it back.

You have a promise to keep, after all

That's all for tonight!

I'll be running Blood Moon either tomorrow or Tuesday.

As always I'll be sticking around for question/suggestion time
