You are Urist Twelfthbay, moe personification of Dwarf Fortress, and there's really no mincing words here: you are absolutely, royally, hilariously screwed right now.

Right. Well, there isn't much point in being all that specific, but here're the fucking facts: you're in a dungeon over in rural Leanbox, and you're facing down Arfoire. She's currently disguised as Estelle, your surrogate big sis, but that matters less than the fact that she's capable of fighting Gamindustri's four NOT-evil goddesses all at the same time. Arfoire is THE big bad dark goddamn evil shadowbad goddess, she's standing right in front of you, and you're commanding her full attention.

On the plus side, you figured out her true identity right off the bat by overloading the room with lag-inducing cats that don't actually affect goddesses, and working it out from there. Really, you probably dodged a bullet in that you're not gonna get stabbed in the back by some fucking doppelganger.

The bad news is that since you've overloaded the room with lag-inducing cats, anyone who could actually help you is wrestling with lag strong enough to pin them to the floor (except for Blanc, who's a goddess, and she's too busy being half-dead to help you out).

To be perfectly honest, you could really go for a goddamned drink right now.

The cause of all your troubles looks around, an uncharacteristically proud smirk touching her lips. "My, my. What's wrong?" Arfoire sneers, nudging Ein with the toe of her boot- the Warrior of Light doesn't even say a word, staring in abject horror at the thing wearing Estelle's skin.

"Cat got your tongue? Is this all the fanfare I get after revealing myself to the world for the first time in ages? Or is dear little Urist really strong enough to disable an entire room of adventurers, all by herself?"

You freeze in place as the evilbad goddess turns her full attention on you. There's all sorts of mystical supernatural jargon used to describe what you're feeling right now, like aura or chi or pressure, but at Arfoire's look, the first thing that flashes through your mind is "I'm gonna die."

"Thanks for the help, little girl." Arfoire tilts her head at you and rests a boot on top of Ein's shoulder, ignoring the adventurer's death glare. "As I was saying... Keeper has said a /lot/ about you. I think I'm starting to see why, despite how you're quaking in your shoes. As you should!"

She breaks off to let loose a long peal of laughter, as stereotypically villainous as anyone can get without a handlebar mustache. Behind her, you see Blanc leaning against the wall- she's mouthing some set of words at you. You can't tell what they are (keep her doing... what?), but she's also giving you pointed stares and tilting her head toward the ground- although there's nothing there except for all the cats. All YOUR cats.

As if that wasn't enough, you hear Exey's voice break in over Therapist, and you almost jump out of your skin- wait, is your little telepathy-power/organizational tool a two-way thing?? "Low Rider. This is mission control. Backup's coming in hot. How copy?"

>CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING, AND...
[A1] [SUDDENLY, CATS] Command your cats to mob Arfoire while she's laughing, freeing up your allies. The cats won't slow her down with lag, but hundreds of cats may slow her down by virtue of being hundreds of furry bodies that can't be easily shaken off.
[A2] [STEALTHILY, CATS] Command your cats to move away from your allies. If you've got any chance of getting out of here alive, you desperately need them to NOT be lagged to hell and back. As a bonus, you'll be able to better position your cats for a sudden strike.
[A3] [HACKING THE CATS] Pull up DFHack and start ramming tags and bits of code into your cats, because desperate times call for desperate measures. Do this right and you'll end up with an entire army of murderthings at your command. Do it wrong and... well.

>... CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING...
[B1] [CHAT UP ARFOIRE] You need Arfoire to keep on talking. Ask her questions about her history, butter her up, anything- if she really likes hearing herself talk, then you'll gladly humor her as long as it takes for backup to arrive.
[B2] [GRILL ARFOIRE] If you're going to talk to Arfoire, you might as well get something out of it. Ask her questions about her underlings, her eventual plans, and what she's been up to. Hopefully, she'll bite.
[B3] [RAGE AT ARFOIRE] Go full protagonist on her ass. You'll never get away with this, I'll avenge my big sis and what you've done, etc. etc. Draw attention away from your allies, and from Exey's backup- whatever that may be.

>[X] [B1-B2] [LET'S CASUALLY PROBE INFO FROM ARFOIRE]
>[X] [A3] [HACKING THE CATS]

For a moment, you desperately look around the room, praying that someone'll speak up before you're forced to converse with the horrible bad awful villain, but no such luck- Shovel Knight's way in over her head, Ein's being used as a stepping stool, and Blanc absolutely doesn't want to attract any attention to herself (not that you can blame her, she looks like shit). This round of talking's up to you, because you really don't want to see what'll happen when Arfoire decides to stop faffing about and murder you all.

Why the hell isn't melting-into-the-floor-to-hide-from-evil-asswipes part of your powerset, anyway?

Digging into some inner reserve of dwarven stoicism, you clear your throat, pitch your voice as gruff as it can go, hitch your thumbs at your belt, and do what you can to stop your boots from quaking. Right. Well, you've got a bit of a history with Keeper, but you've heard a lot about Arfoire, too.

THAT gets her attention, and the thing wearing Estelle's face actually brightens up. "Oh? Oh ho! Well, of course you would have! I left quite the impression on Gamindustri, as all these brats can attest to. So, Urist, how many pages do my grandiose schemes take up in the history books? The skirmish across the Lowee Mountains? The assault across Leanbox Channel? How I gutted Lastation's support systems?"

Arfoire actually looks... giddy. Seriously? This bitch is thirsty for deets about herself? You shake your head. Look, all you know is the general gist of the whole Console War thing, and it comes down to 'Arfoire bad, goddesses good.'

That earns you a sour glare from the doppelganger. "What? Were you raised in a barn, or- no, don't answer that," she adds, cutting off your reply. "Of course, /you/ would have spawned in the Gamindustri Graveyard, after all."

(Cont.)
>>
>>42098930
THAT brings you up short, and you're sure a flash of surprise flits across your face before you bring it under control. How the hell did she know that??

A slow, sinister smile spreads across "Estelle's" face. It's honestly creepy as all fucking hell. "Oh, there's little I don't know about the current state of Gamindustri, little dwarf. Do you think I would come back, guns blazing and ready to commit all the same mistakes I made before? Do you think I wouldn't have grown in strength as I weaved together plans complicated enough to make all these brats' heads explode?"

Well-

"Of course I did!" Arfoire exclaims, caught up in some heated fit or something. "I am the one true goddess that Gamindustri needs! I'm stronger than all of the little girls playing at being goddesses! My plots have taken years to come to fruition, and everything I've set up is already in motion! Leanbox, and now Lowee, and very soon, Lastation and Planeptune- they're all under my control, and there's nothing all of you can do about it!"

As Arfoire breaks into cackling laughter, you shoot a glance over at Blanc. Her flat, dead-eyed, and above all unamused stare gives you courage; you're either doing something right, or everything's all fucked up enough that it doesn't matter any more. Either way, there's no way you can screw this up, unless-

The dark goddess suddenly turns to face you, her eyes narrowing suspiciously. "What are you doing, little dwarf? What's going on in that little mind of yours?"

- unless Arfoire detects that you're mucking about with DFHack while all this is going on.

You're saved from having to answer as a green bolt of psychedelic-looking energy slams into Arfoire's face, staggering her back a step. It's followed by another, and another, and-

(Cont.)

>>42098947
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTkkysQPGhM

"Low Rider, this is mission control," Exey growls. "Boots are on the ground. I repeat, boots are on the ground. All units report in."

"Solid copy, mission control," a smaller voice squeaks. Unlike the last few times you've heard the little minions' voices, this one's in complete control of its emotions. "Prototype, moving at the speed of death." That's all the warning you've got before a tiny armored form barrels forward, dives behind a support pillar, and blasts the dark goddess with some sort of scattershot.

"You little-"

A lance of energy flashes in out of nowhere, shattering Arfoire's (Estelle's?) sword. "Nightmare, reporting in," another voice pipes out- a sniper?

All at once, Therapist crackles to life, flooding your senses with voices, code names, confirmations of attack patterns- military stuff that flies right over your head, along with all manners of ordnance that either slams into Arfoire or peppers the ground around her with shrapnel (or melts it into slag, either or).

You realize that 1) Exey's minions aren't being slowed down by your laggy cats- which is great, because it means you've finally finished ramming haphazard tags and bits of code into the dozens of cats surrounding you, and it's taking effect- and 2) your allies aren't being lagged to death anymore, so they can move now.

That comes at the same time you realize that your cats aren't actually in your control anymore; they're hunching over and starting to twist into horrifying shapes, and they're liable to start murdering everything very, very soon. On top of that, Exey's minions are, at best, going to distract Arfoire for a handful of seconds before she retaliates.

On the plus side... your knees almost give out underneath you when you see Estelle's name pop up in Therapist, and she's moving very, very, VERY quickly toward your position.

You've got some breathing room before it all goes to hell. Make it count.

[ ] [FLEE OUTSIDE] Get everyone together and get the hell out of this dungeon. Mojang isn't going to die without those meds- they'd just have helped her recover more quickly- and it'll all be for nothing if Blanc falls into Arfoire's hands. Or if you get torn apart by your own "cats."

The way DFHack works, the actual app not the in-quest one, you can summon anywhere between 1/7th to a whole square of magma in one action. You'd need a .bat file or something to make multiple squares in one action. Well, it's been a long while since I used DFHack and I was never too good at it, so I might be wrong.

Also note, magma will not flow upwards due to pressure or radiate incredible heat like it should; you need to touch it to get burnt. If the magma is spread too thin it will solidify into obsidian - water can also solidify it.

You're not going back to Vert's base and looking into Mojang's big fat dumb trusting big-sister-worshipping face only to tell her that big sis absolutely failed to get her meds from a dungeon. You still don't quite get why she looks up to you, but you're smart enough to know not to piss away something like someone's trust and Lily Ranks.

Besides, you stare down death all the freaking time, even if you're screaming all the while. All you've got to do is blast through a dark goddess, keep her off your back for long enough to finish your goddamn mission, and then hightail it out of the place before she can pull out your intestines from your ears. Easy as a pastry made from the ingredient for dwarven beer.

"Get AWAY!" Arfoire howls, lashing out with a hand, and Exey's assault soldier- Prototype, was it?- explodes in a torrent of purple flame, plummeting through a pixel-wide gap in the floor.

But you've got to move, and you've got to move NOW. You pull Shovel Knight to her feet and dance through the field of cats- cats that are frozen in place, twitching and bulging in disturbing ways- and slide a shoulder under Blanc's arm, propping up the injured goddess. To her credit, Shovel Knight immediately takes the other side, although she's forced to hunch down a bit to match both your heights.

Up close, you can see the exhaustion etched in CPU White Heart's features, but at least she's not, y'know, cold like a corpse or anything really suspicious like that. "We're getting out of here?" she mumbles, like her usual rage's been tamped down to a low simmer.

You can't help but dodge the question a little. Well, you're all getting /away/ from all THIS bullshit, at least. Good enough, right?

Whatever she was about to say in response is cut off by dozens of gurgling cat voices raised to a feverish yowling pitch, followed by the sound of furry skin splitting in half.

"What," Blanc hisses, recoiling as the cats' backs open up like they've got zippers attached, and fleshy masses unfold themselves from inside the felines. All around Arfoire, the same scene plays itself again and again, calico and tabby and solid colored patterns all opening and revealing something /else/ inside.

With wet sucking sounds, giant sponges rise to face the dark goddess, each and every one of the normally stationary creatures attached to little kitty legs that let them move around at terrifyingly high speeds.

"What the HELL!?" Arfoire screeches as functionally immortal invertebrates begin hurtling toward her like miniature indestructible centaurs. She's cut off as one particularly enterprising sponge smashes into her face, pushing her back a step; it doesn't even leave a bruise, but multiplied by dozens of impacts from immovable forces, the dark goddess is having a hard time budging from her position.

You step back as one of the sponge-cats gets a little too feisty, and narrowly avoid getting kneecapped by another, and then you decide that it's past time to go.

As you make your way further into the dungeon, you hear another burst of static. "Low Rider, this is mission control," Exey repeats, a hint of panic in her normally calm voice. "Do NOT, under any circumstances, let Arfoire get her hands on you. Do you copy?"

You weren't planning on it, no! What-

"That's the gist of what Maia was trying to tell you. It's more complicated than that, though. But promise me, if Arfoire takes out your team and tries to capture you, you'll-"

You can't answer because a rainbow smashes through the ceiling.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7XxrU84ifg

You'd used Estelle's little rainbow road to get to Leanbox in the first place, and it was impressive enough just sitting there and being a bridge; wide enough to accommodate multiple wagons and stronger than steel, you'd never seen anything like it.

As an animated force of nature, though, it's about fifty times more terrifying.

You can't hear yourself scream over the sound of the business end of a rainbow hitting the ground hard enough to split it in half, but you sure can hear Arfoire's howl of rage as she takes the brunt of the impact. Just when the dust starts settling, there's a SECOND impact as a golden meteorite rides the rainbow down at terminal velocities and smashes into the already-ruined factory floor.

Hooray! It's Estelle! And her... her hair's golden and spiky, but hey, it's Estelle!

"EIIIIIIIN!" your surrogate big sister howls, lashing out and narrowly missing the Warrior of Light- she'd just managed to extricate herself from a pile of sponge-cats, and now she's caught up in yet another battle.

Grim-faced, Ein pulls out her sword and knocks back Estelle's slash in one smooth motion, yelling something that you can't hear- if there's any justice in the world, it's something like "stop fighting, Arfoire's here."

... goddammit.

[ ] [DUNGEON] Estelle and Ein can handle themselves against Arfoire and your monsters- or, at least, they've got the smarts to know when to cut and run. You need to get on with your mission, otherwise you're in shitloads of trouble.
[ ] [INTERVENE] For fuck's sake- you've got to stop the two of them from fighting before they're picked off by Arfoire. Run back in and at least do what you can to clear things up before cut-and-running.
[ ] [THERAPIST] Blast through to them with your semi-telepathic abilities, all while falling back. Get them to come with you, because there's no point in splitting up in the face of a dark goddess.

Is there a danger of Urist being captured and brainwashed?

Therapist is such an obvious choice that I feel like it's a trap.

Given how Gamindustri seems to follow real-world physics when nobody's sticking their code in it, would a thermonuclear catsplosion have put down Arfoire?

Right, it's getting a little late for my blood (and I'm drifting a bit), so I'm going to have to end the thread here!

Next thread will be Saturday, 8/29, at 9-ish pm EST! Updates will, as always, be at https://twitter.com/BlorpQuest, and questions can go here or ask.fm/BlorpQuest!

Thanks for participating, guys, and I hope to catch you all next thread, hopefully for a little longer-

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE, because part of the reason I'm ending it early is because I want to get at least half of this bonus scene out before I crash, dammit! Hold on, 'cause I'm writing chunks of it now (unless you have to go to bed, in which case please do).
>>
>>42100799
hey blorp how do you find some of your pics i may or may not be collecting pics for a quest of my own after i bother to watch a lets play or get a copy of my own
>>
>>42100743
Put down? Probably not. Moderately inconvenience Arfoire and maybe force her to retreat? Yes.

Granted, this assumes Arfoire doesn't dodge and that you and/or the rest of your allies survive the ensuing firestorm.
>>
>>42100826
For general reaction pics, I pretty much just trawl 4chan; for anything else, Google or various Japanese image sites work pretty well.

Although that also depends on what kind of quest you're talking about.
>>

So real-world physics wouldn't take over and vaporize the planet, then? It'd just be a clusterfuck of absurdly hot cat bits?

Clusterfuck of absurdly hot cat bits sounds about right! To be honest, the lag would probably be a bigger concern, along with how the resident goddess of whichever landmass Urist is in would fly over to personally Have Some Words with her.

>>42100913
Good luck, anon. Honestly, half of the pictures I use for characters are stand-ins or fanart from other series that come close to fitting the bill (i.e. the pics I used for Freddie, Donkey Kong-tan, etc).

You are Mojang! As the moe personification of Minecraft, you've come a pretty long way from your humble roots. Your backstory literally epitomizes the classic zero-to-hero cliche: wandering in from the wilderness, you've gone from unknown freelancer to the hottest adventurer this side of Gamindustri. Heck, you've even signed on with Leanbox in an almost unprecedented agreement that lets you keep your ties with Lastation!

... that's the official story, at least! Everyone sort of glosses over how you're one of those strange souls who spawned in Gamindustri's Graveyard, rather than within any nation's borders. That's okay, though; to be honest, that hasn't really stopped you or anyone from climbing the ranks!

What really annoys you, though, is how everyone also glosses over Urist's role in your life. It's really unfair to your big sis! Just because she gets a little grumpy and homicidal and drinks a lot doesn't mean it's okay to ignore her!

Just because she's really very glitchy doesn't make it okay, either. Besides, you've had your share of bugs, too. If it wasn't for Urist, you wouldn't have learned half the things that're an integral part of your skill set.

More importantly, without someone like her watching out for you, your life would have been a lot harder.

To be honest, the first really big moment came not too long after you met Urist.

"Your workshop's not big enough," Urist mutters, apropos of nothing. She wasn't much for conversation back in those days, but even then, she was starting to come out of her shell!

Breaking off your little crafting experiments, you look down at Urist from atop your crafting table (yes, you know people don't normally stand ON their tables when using them, but you were young and foolish back then!). "Senpai, senpai, what's a workshop?"

The dwarf girl blinks, shaking her head; her eyes clear up. "What? Didn't say anything about that," she grunts. Before you can press the point, she bulldozes over your objections. "Forget it. Outta metal." She gestures to the small grid in the corner of the basement- just as she says, there's nothing but junk rocks and ores littered neatly all over the floor. "No point digging down deeper when we're so under-equipped. Gotta go to town an' buy some."

Back then, everything you knew about metalcrafting could fit in the palm of your hand, and most words bigger than a few syllables roll right over you without stopping. You tilt your head quizzically, studying the stockpile's contents. "Senpai, senpai, can't you use those rocks instead?"

Urist snorts, kicking aside a few chunks of what you'd later recognize as the ultra-dense, ridiculously rare ore known as Xboxium. "Can't. It's some weird Gamindustri rocks. Nothing like proper dwarven rocks, like magnetite or even tetrahedrite. Sells damn well for junk ore, though."

You take her word without any doubts, although you have to ponder this for a little while. "What's a town?"

That forces the dwarf to pause for a few moments. "A bigger trading depot. You can get stuff there," Urist hazards, scratching her dusty cheek. "Filled with people. "

You stare right back at her with wide, innocent eyes. "A place with more senpais?" you breathe, hardly able to imagine that scene.

"No," she snaps. "NOT senpais. Not everyone's like me, or- look, that's not important." Urist shrugs on a suit of battered copper armor; to your inexperienced eyes (and your expertise which's limited to leather duds), she's as dashing as a shining knight of justice. "I understand if it's a scary thing, bumping shoulders with a bunch of strangers, so you don't have to-"

"I wanna come!" you chirrup, hopping off the crafting table and running circles around Urist. "Senpai! Please let me come along!"

(Cont.)
>>
>>42101351
The dwarf heaves a long-suffering sigh and shoulders her battered copper axe. "Fine. About time you met other folks. What's the worst that could happen?"

Half an hour later, you leave the small frontier town in all haste, backlit by a roaring inferno that's well on its way to engulfing the only bar within a thirty-mile radius. Neither of you say anything to each other; Urist is too busy cursing under her breath, and you're too busy wallowing in guilt and desperately trying not to cry loudly enough for your senpai to hear.

"- goddamn pigfuckers," Urist snarls, ending her blue streak. "Stuck-up tree-hugging pansies with support pillars shoved up their asses! Think they're so much better just because-"

"I-I'm sorry, senpai!" you wail, breaking down completely. "I-If I hadn't come along-"

"Shaddup."

You flinch back, fidgeting in place as Urist paces back and forth, muttering darkly to herself. Just as you've built up the confidence to speak up again, she stops in her tracks and whirls on you, puffing up like a small angry animal. "This was my fault. We're gonna go fix that."

That was, quite possibly, the first long sentence she's strung together that wasn't just all curses.

(Cont.)
>>
>>42101369
"We're gonna fix /you/," Urist continues, pointing a finger at you. You look down at yourself, and at the reason you attracted so much ridicule in town (which, in turn, attracted Urist's endless homicidal rage and the firestorm that followed): you're blocky, like your body is entirely made up of cubes strung together to make someone vaguely humanoid.

It says a lot about both you and Urist that you both thought this was perfectly normal or, at the very least, not worth talking about during the time you've spent together.

"And for that, we're going to go on something I should've taken you on, like, goddamn /weeks/ ago." Urist pauses to take a swig from her battered flask. "Took me two dungeon runs to get to a state that this goddamn place calls normal."

"Are we going on a trip, senpai?"

"Even better." Your senpai starts walking in a random direction, her axe slung over one shoulder. "We're going on a dungeon run! What's the worst fucking thing that could happen?"

As it turned out, that's not really something anyone should say right before their first dungeon run.

Missed it. How... UNFORTUNATE. Well, I'll have to reserve my wonderfully horrible ideas for the next thread.

Will Urist ever summon anything that won't try to fucking kill her? Like, at this point it isn't even summons, it's just furious NPC mobs that will end up populating the world.

The dwarves we summon probably won't try to murder us. Initially.
