"Who's the Frankenstein's Bride?" Johnny asks as they look at the wedding unfold.

"I don't know," Kaito replies. "I've never seen her before."

Kenshi looks around at the assembled audience for the wedding. "I can't tell if this is a circus or a cartoon," he says. "Are those centaurs over there? And what's with the ninjas?"

Kaito looks and can see Noob Saibot, Scorpion and Ermac, along with Skarlet and Mileena. Interestingly enough, there are no tarkatans or shokan present at this wedding, unlike the last one. Plenty of centaurs, though...

Quan Chi raises up his hands. "Do you, Shao Kahn, once more take Sindel as your bride eternal, your matrimony and vows witnessed by the Elder Gods, until death do you part?"

"I do," Shao Kahn replies, taking the hand of his bride.

The demon sorcerer looks at her next. "And do you, Sindel, accept Shao Kahn's vows, and take him as your lord and husband?"

She turns to him and smiles. "I do."

"We need to stop this," Kaito says, looking at Turana chained to Shao Kahn's side. "We need to stop this right now."

"We can't go down there!" Kenshi says. "Can we? I mean, do we actaully have a shot?"

Kaito looks at Noob, Scorpion and Ermac alone, not to mention Quan Chi, Shao Kahn and whoever his new wife is. "I don't know..."

"I've got a plan," Johnny says. "Straight out of Ninja Mime: prisoner exchange."

"What?" Kaito says.

"We've got Reptile, right?" Johnny points out. "We go down there and bargain for your friend in exchange for Reptile."

"Assuming they don't just kill us all on sight," Kaito deadpans.

"It could work," Kenshi agrees. "And if not, we could always just beat them up."

"I'm all for that, too," Johnny says with a smile.

Kaito thinks about it and shakes his head. "I don't think they really value Reptile all that much. And Shao seems pretty attached to his new... pet."

Johnny thinks. "Well, maybe we could offer them something else. Damn, if only Khameleon were here, we could--"

"I'm right here." Johnny nearly shouts in surprise as she uncloaks right next to him.

Kaito looks at her. "Where the hell were you?!"

"Perhaps I was with you the entire time," she says. "Or maybe I had other things to do since I was back in Outworld."

He looks at her suspiciously. "I told you we would need a guide. Why sneak off?"

"Let's save that for later," she says. "Now... how about that prisoner exchange? Only to sweeten the deal..."

She turns into Kitana. "We offer Shao Kahn the princess he's been wanting to kill?"

"Why would you put yourself in front of the executioner's axe?" Kaito asks her.

"Because it will get me close to Shao Kahn," she says. "And when the time is right, I will strike."

Kaito doesn't like it, but he holds them all back. "No... I don't think this is the time to approach them for a negotiation. And we can't just jump down there with no backup... I hate to say it, but we'll get wrecked if we do."

Khameleon changes back into her normal guise and they watch as the wedding draws to a close.

"Then, before all assembled and the eyes of the Elder Gods, I unite these two as husband and wife, Emperor and Queen, and in doing so, bring unification to their peoples and their realms."

"Realms... what realm?" Kaito mutters. "I thought Shao Kahn was invading Earth..."

"You may now kiss the bride."

Quan Chi waits for Shao Kahn and Sindel, who stand close to each other, to kiss.

As they do, something changes. There's a different feeling in the air. As they part, Shao Kahn looks up and smiles, apparently feeling it as well.

"And so, the furies are unbalanced," he says to the assembled chamber. "The realm of Earth... is MINE!"

The ground begins to shake. "What the hell is going on?!" Kenshi asks.

"I've got a baaad feeling about this..." Johnny says. Kaito looks out a nearby window and sees a swirling black thunderous storm begin to encircle the fortress. He begins to realize, too late, that the fortress is starting to shift from one reality to another.

A supermassive portal opens over the fortress and it is engulfed in a sea of darkness, lightning and magic. After a few tense minutes, the rumbling stops and the clouds outside dissipate. The sky is dark red and bleak, but as the new landscape of the fortress is revealed, all four of them collectively hold their breathes, though only the three humans know what they are looking at.

Shao Kahn's fortress now sits in the heart of New York City.

Kaito looks at Khameleon. "Okay. We're back in Earthrealm. Things are going from bad to worse, but the plan hasn't changed. We're getting Turana out of here. Khameleon, I need you to try and find the others. They're in this city somewhere, and tell them what's happened."

She narrows her eyes. "But Shao Kahn is here! I want my chance to kill him!"

"You'll get your chance," Kaito says. "But right now I--"

"Fine," she says, cutting him off. She turns invisible, vanishing from sight.

"Khameleon?" Kaito says to the air. "Did you sneak off?"

Johnny looks over at him. "Should we trust her?"

"I don't have a choice right now," Kaito says. "She's either gone or still here, but if I send away one of you, I'm down two people instead of only one."

"Something's fishy with that chick," Kenshi says.

Kaito can't find himself disagreeing with him. The way she just left them at the camp only to appear here in a way that they can't tell when she even arrived and was with them is strange. It seems like someone wouldn't do that unless they were trying to hide something...

"Where to now?" Johnny asks.

Kaito looks down at the throne room; Shao Kahn is barking out orders to his generals. Reiko, Motaro and Scorpion move out, each given an army to command. They haven't left the room yet, but Quan Chi is leaving with Noob Saibot and his three female assassins.

The three of them suddenly hear the sounds of guards approaching the hallway they are hiding in.

Kaito looks down at the hall Quan Chi and his minions leave within and, having spent enough time around Shao Kahn's fortress to know his way around fairly well, is able to bring both Johnny and Kenshi along with him and dodge the patrolling guards to make it to the same hall.

Kaito approaches the staircase leading downwards that he hears Quan Chi's voice coming from; Shang Tsung's Flesh Pits.

Sneaking down the stairs, Kaito overhears the demon sorcerer. "Bring everything that isn't bolted to the floor. Collect all of his jars, books and failed experiments. They will be of some use yet."

Peeking around the corner, he sees Quan Chi overseeing his demon assassin women taking everything that belongs to Shang Tsung into a portal, presumably to his new lair. Noob Saibot stands nearby, near the flesh pits themselves, staring down into them.

Kaito quickly goes over the plan with Kenshi and Johnny; they'll attack Noob while he attempts to knock out Quan Chi. As the new court sorcerer, he must have some way to free Turana.

On the count of three, the three of them spring into action. Kaito runs directly for Quan Chi, managing to take him by surprise.

Kaito runs up and attacks Quan Chi, punching him in the throat to interrupt his instructions before following up with a few punches to the face. Nearby, Noob Saibot teleports away from Johnny and Kenshi, appearing behind them and splitting into two in order to fight them both at once. Kaito punches Quan Chi again before one of the female assassins leaps in front of him with a knife, slicing at him and causing him to step back while the other two help their master to a sitting position nearby.

"I recognize the other two... So you must be Sareena's replacement," Kaito says. "What's it like to be a fourth wheel?"

She smiles and takes out another knife. "I'm better than Sareena ever was. Our master will make her pay for her betrayal, but in the meantime, we will play with you..."

Nearby, Quan Chi coughs a bit. "Kia... Jataaka... Ashrah! Destroy him!"

So her name is Ashrah... Kia and Jataaka leap in front of their master alongside her as they each draw their weapons.

Kaito smirks and charges up to her with a low punch, but she dodges to the side and brings up a foot to kick him right in the crotch. Kaito's eyes go wide as Kia and Jataaka force him down onto a knee as Ashrah walks around and slams her knee into his face, causing his nose to bleed. She smiles before taking out a knife and stabbing it in his side, twisting it slightly. Kaito's wincing pain causes her to giggle with murderous glee.

She curls a hand into a fist and punches at his face, but Kaito blocks the attack. He blocks two kicks from Kia and Jataaka with the same hand before getting up on his feet and playing defensively. The three assassins come at him from multiple angles, sometimes attacking simultaneously, but Kaito blocks each and every single one of their strikes. They grow furious and angry at his suddenly impenetrable defense.

Suddenly, Kaito discharges electicity from his body. Kia and Jataaka are shocked to the core and fall backwards, unconscious, but Ashrah leaps backwards and doesn't fall prey to the shocking bolts. Kaito takes the knife out of his side and throws it aside as he looks at her with eyes that shoot off sparks.

"You're strong," she says with a sly smile. "But not strong enough."

She brings her hands together and conjures a globe of fire that she throws at him. He dodges it as it hits a nearby wall, the flames spreading across the stone.

Kaito charges to meet her in the center of the room. They both punch, kick, block, roll and leap as they fight. Kaito grabs her arm but she manages to hook a leg around his knee and force him onto the ground. They both grapple with each other, their sweaty bodies coming into close proximity, but he is stronger, forcing her onto her back. She grabs and pulls his hair and he punches het in the gut. She moans, a pleasurable sound, as she rakes her fingers up his back and bites his neck, drawing a bit of blood. He lifts her up and slams her on the ground as she wraps her legs around his waist and gyrates her hips, all the while thrashing her teeth and tongue against his neck and moaning deeper and louder and--

"Kaito! The hell are you doing, man?!" Johnny says as he watches the two of them writhing on the floor before getting punched in the face by Noob.

Kaito lets go of her and rolls away, getting out of her leglock. She smiles as she licks her lips of his blood and playfully bites in his direction.

"You are one freaky chick..." Kaito says, rubbing his sore neck.

Nearby, Quan Chi stands and raises his hands up, which glow green due to a spell he is casting. He brings his hands together and the floor splits open as two green skeletons emerge and charge at Kaito alongside her.

Kaito quickly teleports behind all three of them to uppercut Ashrah in the back, sending her sprawling. The two skeletons turn and leap upon him, clawing and scratching with their sharpened boney fingers.

Kaito whips around and manages to throw them both at Quan Chi. The skeletons break into green piles of bones which dissipate as the sorcerer falls backwards. Kaito approaches him, but not before Ashrah jumps on his back. "Miss me?" she asks before attempting to jam a knife in his throat.

He grabs the knife-wielding hand before it can make contact and pushes against it as she giggles as she playfully bites his ear and tugs on it with her teeth.

Nearby, Saibot kicks Kenshi in the face, knocking him down. The oily clone advances upon him but Johnny comes in with a Shadow Kick, knocking him against the wall and splattering it with black goo. Noob tackles Johnny down into a nearby well, and Kaito trips over Kenshi's leg and falls into the same well.

They all fall into the Soul Chamber, with Kaito landing on top of Ashrah, knocking her out cold. She lets go of him and drops and knife as he gets to his feet. Nearby, Johnny fights with Noob, and Kaito sees an opportunity to overwhelm and defeat the dark ninja with his actor ally.

Kaito charges at Noob, who grabs Johnny's leg and throws him into Kaito. Both of them tumble backwards and struggle to get up.

Suddenly, they both hear a shout of "BANZAI!" from above as Kenshi jumps into the well, tackling Quan Chi in with him. The both of them land atop Kaito and Johnny and for a moment, everyone merely takes a breather as they attempt to disentangle themselves. Quan Chi kicks Johnny in the face and punches Kaito in the chest as he creates a portal beneath all four of them, causing them to fall into it and out the nearby end, with the three humans falling in a pile and Quan Chi landing perfectly on his feet. He backs up to stand next to Noob.

Kenshi rolls over and shakes his head. "Ugh... I brought the white guy down here with us..."

"Good work," Kaito says. "With just the two of them, we can win this easy..."

Noob, having regenerated his shadow essence, once more splits into two halves. "Okay, three on three isn't so bad," Johnny says. "It's still even."

As if hearing him and appreciating the irony of the statement, Ermac emerges from the Soul Chamber's swirling mini-soulnado amongst a storm of green lights and spiritual essence. He (or rather, They) walks up to stand alongside Noob and Quan Chi.

"Three against... how many are in that guy, exactly?" Johnny says.

Quan Chi smiles and turns to leave, content to allow Noob and Ermac to deal with the humans. They charge at the Earthrealmers.

Kaito charges up with electricity and charges in. Ermac picks him up with telekinesis and slams him against the ground, bouncing him up before both Noob and Saibot perform mirrored back-kicks against him, sending him flying back to his allies. Johnny and Kenshi pick him up.

"Alright, my turn," Johnny says as he charges in. He blocks Ermac's telekinetic strike and Shadow Kicks Saibot before performing the splits and forcing his fist into Noob's groin. The wraith falls back as Johnny gets up, but not before Ermac blasts him with a wave of green psychic energy, turning him upside down and slamming his head against the ground, breaking his sunglasses. He throws Johnny back at Kaito and Kenshi.

Kaito and Johnny both moan. Kenshi looks around, finding no weapon as the soul construct and the shadow-clone ninja wraiths approach. Kaito is down and wounded, bleeding from his earlier scraps with Ashrah. Johnny's glasses are broken. He stands up and curls his fists, stepping over them both.

Kaito watches as Kenshi slams his fists together, challenging them both. He gets into a combat stance and dares them to come forward.

Ermac and Noob look at each other before the red-clad conglomeration of souls uses his powers to pick Kenshi up and throw him into the mini soulnado. Kaito's eyes widen as he sees his friend vanish in the green, swirling vortex.

Quan Chi pauses and laughs. "He will be torn apart by the souls within," he taunts. "You should never have brought an ordinary mortal to this place."

Kaito stands as Quan Chi laughs, his fist charging up with electricity. It goes from white to red before their eyes as the human screams in rage, blasting all of them with red lightning. Noob Saibot receives the worst of it as his bodies are both destroyed, picked apart by the storm. Ermac shields himself with a green barrier, but Quan Chi is unable to defend himself and is thrown back against a wall, knocked unconscious.

Ermac lowers the barrier and looks at Kaito.

"You're going to pay for what you did," he tells the soul construct. "He was my friend! He deserved better!"

"His life means nothing," Ermac says, holding up a fist glowing with hado-energy. "All mortal lives mean nothing. Before our power, he was nothing. You are nothing."

Kaito prepares to attack when suddenly he notices a strange color out of the corner of his eye. The mini-soulnado in the heart of the chamber is changing... from green, to turquoise, to blue.

Suddenly the souls from within burst outwards as Kenshi leaps out, his body glowing with a blue aura. He lands and opens his eyes, staring at them both. He raises up a hand towards Ermac and closes it, creating a psionic fist of blue energy that wraps around Ermac's neck. He then tosses Ermac to the ground.

"Kenshi?" Kaito asks.

His old friend looks down at his hands and feels the raw psionic power, his inner potential and strength, unlocked and flowing freely. "Kaito... I feel good."

He walks over to stand alongside his friend as Ermac gets up. "Impossible... Only those with immense psychic power can withstand the full power of a Soulnado! How did you--"

Kenshi performs an open-palm strike in the air, creating a burst of blue energy that pushes Ermac back like a punch. "I guess I'm psychic then," he says with a smile. "You've made a big mistake, my friend."

The combined might of Kaito and Kenshi proves too much for even Ermac. The soul construct's focus is drained by Kaito's barrage with red lighting and his attacks are countered by Kenshi, who quickly learns how to use his newfound powers. He turns and kicks the air, creating a psychic attack that knocks Ermac to the ground.

Kaito advances on him and blasts his body with red lightning to the point where he can hardly get back up. Kenshi walks up alongside him and the two of them combine both of their powers for a final blast of red lightning and blue telekinesis that forces Ermac up against a wall, weakened and nearly torn apart, his black wrappings falling to shreds and his red clothing torn.

Kaito lowers his arms and sighs. "Nice one," he compliments his friend. "Seems like I'm always getting saved through wildly improbable means."

Nearby, Johnny stirs and gets back up to his feet. Kaito goes to help him up as Kenshi walks up to Ermac and kicks him while he is down.

"Yeah, who's the psychic now, huh?" he asks, laughing as he kicks Ermac again. "This guy's not to tough. He ran away in Japan because he's just a coward. I've only had my powers for a few minutes and I'm already better than him!"

Below, Ermac opens his green eyes. Kenshi turns to gloat some more but Ermac's hand is suddenly in his face, blasting it with green energy. Kenshi falls back and holds his hands over his face as the green energy collects and swirls around his eyeballs. Ermac begins to squeeze as Kenshi screams in pain.

"NO!" Kaito shouts, nearly dropping Johnny as he leaps over, but it is too late.

Ermac smiles as he closes his hands, crushing Kenshi's eyes in their sockets. The human screams even louder as blood pours down his fingers and face, staining his red gi.

Kaito catches Kenshi as he falls, holding him. Ermac takes the opportunity to run, collecting Shang Tsung with his telekinesis as he makes for the exit of the Soul Chamber.

He grabs the bottom of Kenshi's shirt and quickly tears a long white section of fabric off of it, tightly wrapping it around Kenshi's head to cover his eyes. The white fabric quickly turns red from his blood, staining it.

"I'm not going to let them get away," he says. He looks at Johnny. "Stay with him."

The actor nods as Kaito takes off after Ermac. Running up the stairs from the Soul Chamber, he finds the soul construct floating down the hall towards the throne room, still carrying Quan Chi, most likely intent on warning Shao Kahn.

Kaito leans down and throws Quan Chi over his shoulder before running back to the Soul Chamber to collect Johnny and Kenshi. The blinded warrior holds onto Kaito as he is strung along and led throughout the fortress, the layout of which thankfully has remained mostly the same. Johnny takes Quan Chi and together the four of them escape from the fortress through the same hidden entrance in the Dead Pool, which now leads out onto a New York street. Kaito looks around at the wrecked city of New York; its buildings crumbling or on fire, dragons flying overhead, the skies red as blood and utter devastation brought down upon what was once one of the most populated cities on all of Earth. The streets are a war zone; monsters and Outworld warriors are battling cops, soldiers and civilians, with every suburb and street turned into a fight for life and death.

"It's like the end of days..." Johnny says. "I made a movie like this once, you know, but I never imagined it would actually happen..."

"It hasn't happened yet," Kaito says. "Come on. We need a place to hide."

"Good thing I know my way around," Johnny says. "Been here plenty of times. Let's see... Looks like Shao Kahn's fortress touched down right in the middle of Times Square... Alright, I know where we are! Let's go!"

Johnny leads them through the war-torn streets. "Where are we going?" Kaito asks.

"St. Patrick's Cathedral!" Johnny says. "It's not far--just around the corner, really!"

They avoid a group of centaurs and a tormentor tearing their way through the streets, and then they manage to avoid a dragon flying low down the streets chasing a motorcyclist, before making it to the entrance of the grand cathedral. The windows are dark and broken and much of the exterior is damaged, with stains of blood on the ground and corpses littering the area. The doors are closed and look sturdy.

Above the church, the sky is dark and ominous clouds circle overhead, adding to the already impressive neo-gothic architecture.

Wary of the front door, they decide to sneak around to the side. They find a smaller door that Johnny breaks down with a well-placed Shadow Kick that brings them into some older office rooms. They set Kenshi and Quan Chi down and prepare to tend to their wounds when they hear a crash coming from the main hall of the church.

"I'll go check it out," Kaito says, moving to a smaller hallway and heading into the primary worship area.

The church is mostly empty; it looks like there was a battle and a slaughter. Blood stains the floors and walls in large splotches; many were butchered here.

In the heart of the church's main floor, before the podium, Kaito sees someone fighting. An older man wearing the robes of a priest picks up a heavy candlestick and beats an Outworld warrior over the head with it. Another Outworlder runs in with a spear and tries to stab him; he grabs the shaft just below the spearhead and punches the wood, breaking it with a pair of brass knuckles, before headbutting the warrior into a pew. He approaches him and stomps on his chest, breaking the pew as he is forced through it.

He wearily approaches a table and takes out a box of cigars, managing to light one before Kaito steps out into the open. The man turns around and holds up his bloodied knuckles.

"You one'a them?" he asks Kaito.

"No, I'm human," he replies. "What happened in here? Who are you?"

"O'Reilly," he says. "People came to pray. The Archbishop was leading them in sermon. The monsters came... Now, I'm the only one left."

He rubs his back and sits down on one of the pews near the dead body of a beaten Outworlder. "It's the end times, my boy... Might as well grab somethin' and go down fightin'."

The point of faith was believin' in somethin' you couldn't understand or see. Now monsters are comin' outta the sky and hell's openin' up and spittin' out the dead." He pauses to let out some smoke. "The price of our disbelief, I suppose."

"It's not got anything to do with hell or heaven," Kaito says. "A warlord from another dimension is trying to conquer Earth."

"If you say so," O'Reilly shrugs. He stares up at the ceiling of the cathedral. "The church didn't protect anyone. Hallowed ground don't mean squat to these monsters. Faith brought them here like cows to a slaughterhouse." He sighs. "Lord Jesus, give me strength to fight these devils until they take my last breath. Then I'm yours."

Kaito parts from the priest, taking the goblet into the back. He tells Johnny to head out and speak to the priest and possibly find a way to secure Quan Chi while he heals Kenshi. As Johnny departs with the white-skinned sorcerer, Kaito leans down over his wounded friend.

"Kaito... I'm not going to be this way forever, aren't I? There's... There's some kind of magic that can fix this, right?"

"I don't know," Kaito speaks honestly. "But I've got some healing powers with water I got from a water spirit... I can try my best."

He removes Kenshi's bloody blindfold and sets it aside. He has his eyes shut, and Kaito gently encourages his pained friend to open them so he can pour water over the wounds. Kenshi winces as Kaito cleans the wounds, focusing his power and concentrating on serene, calm thoughts. Thoughts of his friends, his father, the good times he's had amidst this wild adventure he's been on.

His healing water stops the bleeding and washes away all wounds, cleaning Kenshi of blood and helping him with the pain. But his eyes are gone. Kaito didn't exactly expect new eyeballs to just grow back, but is still saddened. He remembers his childhood, when he and Kenshi played in the countrysides of Japan, play-fighting before learning true fighting and sparring with each other.

It's quite the contrast from today. Kaito wraps Kenshi's head with the blindfold again as his friend breathes easier. "I remember it too..." he says.

"What?"

"The fields, the playing..." he whispers. "I remember it too..."

"But I didn't..." Kaito's voice trails off as he realizes that Kenshi just read his mind.

"I did?" Kenshi asks. "I... I can hear you, but I can't hear you..." he says.

Kaito makes sure that Kenshi is comfortable on a cushioned chair and steps into the next room over to give Raiden a call. Taking out the stone he was given, he focuses on speaking to the Thunder God and a moment later a tiny golden image of him appears.

"Kaito," he says. "You are returned from Outworld?"

"I got a free ride when Shao Kahn's fortress popped up in New York," he replies. "I take it you're already aware that's happened?"

"Yes, and it is very disturbing," he says. "Shao Kahn should not be able to merge the realms as he is doing. He is violating Mortal Kombat."

"He got married," Kaito says. "To someone named... Sindel, I think."

Raiden's eyes widen. "The edenian queen..."

"What?"

"Sindel is Kitana's mother. But she has been dead for thousands of years. He must have resurrected her and married her..."

"But if she was edenian, how would that give him the right to merge the realms?"

"...Perhaps... if she were resurrected not within Outworld, but on Earth... That must be it. Shao Kahn's unholy union to her must be the result of trickery. I have pleaded with the Elder Gods, but they have refused to stop him. I fear we may be forsaken."

"Fuckin' bullshit Elder Gods..." Kaito says under his breath. "Okay, so now what?"

"We can still stop the invasion if we defeat Shao Khan," Raiden says. "But his fortress is too well-defended. We need a way to lure him out into the open."

Kaito opens the door and looks at Kenshi before stepping out into the main worship area. Johnny is tying Quan Chi up and Father O'Reilly is watching him while having a smoke and drinking from a bottle of strong whiskey.

Kaito decides to help Johnny. O'Reilly (perhaps only jokingly) gives them some notes, such as the placement of burning candles and the use of incense and holy water, along with the drawing of a chalk circle.

"So, does this stuff actually work?" Johnny asks.

"Hell if I know," the priest replies, taking another sip from his bottle. "The ropes you got on his hands an' feet will probably do better."

Kaito stands up. "I just got off the stone-phone with Raiden. He's bringing reinforcements here as soon as he can."

"Who?" O'Reilly asks.

"Oh... Uh, Raiden. He's... He's a god of thunder and lightning."

The priest takes another drink. "Here I am, an ordained priest, sixty years on this earth talkin' to God in confessionals and prayer and along comes this boy who says he's got a direct phoneline to him."

"I don't think Raiden is God," Kaito says. "To be honest... I have no idea how God fits into all of this. Or the Elder Gods."

O'Reilly chuckles. "Oh, now there's Elder Gods, too," he laughs. "World's gone mad, innit."

"...We should probably barricade this place," Kaito says. "Johnny, help me move some stuff in front of the doors."

The two of them spend some time stacking up tables, chairs and metal candle stands in front of the doors and windows. O'Reilly helps as well, though he mostly moves bodies out of the way and prays over them. "I knew some of these folk..." he says, turning a woman's face over.

Kaito heads into the back room to stay with Kenshi. He talks with his friend and keeps him calm, telling him the news that their friends are on their way.

"Kaito," he says. "I can hear things... But I'm not hearing with my ears," he says. "I... I think I hear spirits."

He looks at his friend. "What are they saying?"

"Most of them are crying," he says. "They died... recently. In the invasion. They're lingering... Something is keeping them from moving on. They're in pain."

Kaito listens intently. The Elder Gods not stopping the invasion and merging of the realms, spirits not moving onto the next plane of existence... Something is wrong with the natural order of things, perhaps even more than Kaito realized.

"And there's something else," Kenshi says. "In the distance, behind all those voices, I hear... echoes..."

"Echoes? Of what?"

"Something is calling to me," he says. "I don't know what, but it is very far away... Home. It's calling me from home, and I don't know how I know it, but... It's in Japan, somewhere. And it's calling me."

"Do you know what it is?" Kaito asks.

"The echoes are distant. But they speak of something ancient and powerful, something... sharp."

"Sharp? A blade?"

"A sword."

Nearby, candles on a nearby table suddenly blow out and Kaito feels a chill grow up his spine. "Was that you?"

"What?" Kenshi looks in his direction. "Was what me?"

Kaito looks out a nearby window and sees the red sky over the church beginning to darken even further. "I think we're about to have company," Kaito says. "And not the good kind."

Kaito helps Kenshi to his feet and helps him into the main chamber. The candles here flicker out as well and a chill rushes through the chapel. O'Reilly and Cage both rise and look around as the windows darken due to the clouds outside and the shadows of the room seem to grow, giving the chapel a sinister look.

"I've got a--"

"Bad feeling, right," Kaito cuts him off, helping Kenshi into a seat. "I think we've got company."

As if on cue in one of Cage's films, the front door is suddenly host to a series of banging noises as a group of people on the other side try to get in. Hands can be seen and heard scraping against windows and moans reach their ears.

"It's the dead, come for the livin'," O'Reilly says. "It might be time."

Near the entrance, a circle of fire is formed. They watch the circle draw itself in a line of flames before a burst of hellfire from within causes them to avert their eyes. A burning figure grows and emerges from the floor.

"Death has come," a voice calls out. "The end is near."

The flames disperse and Scorpion remains, without his mask, exposing his skull. O'Reilly kisses his cross and finishes the rest of his drink. "This one's a demon?"

"No," Kaito says. "Just the slave of the one we caught, probably coming for his master."

He approaches Scorpion and stands fast. "You shouldn't have come here, ninja."

"You cannot stop me," Scorpion says. Kaito notices an obsidian stone, smooth and rounded like an egg, hanging from a silver chain around Scorpion's neck. "I will have Qaun Chi."

"You can instead have a message for Shao Kahn," Kaito replies. "Quan Chi for Turana. An exchange of prisoners."

"I don't know if it's such a good idea to give him back," Johnny whispers.

"I have no need to make any deal," Scorpion says, "when I can instead tear through you and take him for myself back to the Emperor."

"I fought and beat you at Shao Kahn's wedding," Kaito says.

"With the help of a Lin Kuei warrior who is not here. And that was before I was given the Deathstone." Kaito looks again at the black orb around his neck. "Not only has it given me command of the legions of the dead, but it has increased my own power tenfold."

He raises his arms and lines of hellfire grow around the room, at every window and door, cutting off each avenue of escape. He then clenches his fists and the windows shatter, allowing his dead warriors to begin to climb in. They are armed with ancient weaponry and are skeletal in nature, but they are many and the humans are few in number.

"You cannot hope to survive the might of the dead," Scorpion says. "I command the legions and there is nothing you can do to stop them. I have already turned thousands of victims into reinforcements for my army."

Some of the dead corpses in the room begin to stir and rise, moaning, brought to unholy life by the Deathstone.

"It is fitting that your life shall end in a church," Scorpion muses. "Perhaps I will allow you to pray before I kill you."

"I should get this guy for my next zombie movie," Johnny says, though he is quite tense. Humor is his shield, after all.

"We just need to hold out long enough for Raiden and the others to arrive," Kaito says.

O'Reilly cracks his knuckles. "Then let's do the Lord's work and send these monsters back to hell."

Scorpion points at them and says, "Bring me Quan Chi. Destroy the others."

The undead howl and charge in.

As others have pointed out, I'm in Korea. Night to you is afternoon/evening for me. Being in the Army, I can't stay up all night and sleep all day just to run this quest, although I know that many of my followers are likely in the opposite timezone as I.

As for everyone else, low rolls can happen. You can't really blame a guy for rolling low. I also can't really find much reason to blame an anon for showing up/rolling late.

It's not the end of the thread if someone rolls low and late. Don't act hostile, I'd hate to drive away players. I think we're all here because we're enjoying the story and we all like Mortal Kombat (or at least have a passing interest in it) and we can all get along on that alone.

I believe it's more the precedent it sets. Allowing rolls so long after the post opens up people rolling constantly until good rolls shows up and generally causes alot of samefagging. It's one of the biggest reasons alot of quests have a cutoff. It also means the GM has to rewrite stuff and slows down the quest more usually.
Even without a cutoff though, an hour is really late. I mean, what if I someone comes in and rolls a 1 six hours after a post?

Upon touching the black orb, Kaito is immediately paralyzed. His eyes go wide and he falls backwards, feeling colder than he has ever felt before. Kaito's head is suddenly filled with voices as all of the dead warriors shout in his mind, mocking him and laughing. Kaito feels his blood chill and his body tense as he begins to die.

Scorpion's corpse suddenly bursts into flame as he rises upwards, his head reforming into a blazing skeletal form. He looks down at Kaito and laughs.

"No living soul can command or touch the Deathstone," he says, tearing it out of Kaito's grasp. Kaito is still reeling from it and can barely move.

Scorpion returns the Deathstone to its place around his neck and draws one of his twin swords. "Now... DIE!"

He stabs down at Kaito.

Kaito sees the sword coming and brings up his leg, managing to deflect the sword into cutting Scorpion's leg. He breaks free of his paralysis and rolls away as Scorpion's mouth opens, unleashing a torrent of flame down upon the spot he was just lying.

Suddenly, Father O'Reilly shouts and punches Scorpion in the jaw with his brass knuckles. The ninja spectre turns his head and looks at the old priest. "Well, come on, then!" O'Reilly shouts, punching at him again. Scorpion catches the second punch and lifts the priest up by his neck with his other hand, effortlessly tossing him aside and through a table.

Scorpion turns his attention back on Kaito and walks forward, his eyes burning and his mouth frothing with fire. Scorpion prepares to throw his chain-kunai at Kaito, but it stops mid-air, covered in a blue aura.

Kenshi, nearby, is holding up his hand. He is not looking in the direction of the kunai, but somehow knew where it was. He tosses it back at Scorpion and wraps his feet up in the chain and then pulls, tripping the ninja.

Kaito looks up at Kenshi, who takes out the hilt from his belt and activates it. The green blade of the laser sword emerges and Kenshi shouts the shout of a warrior as he leaps at the undead, hacking away at them, using his powers to sense his environment and the location of his enemies. Kaito gets back up on his feet and watches Johnny and Kenshi fight towards each other, eventually getting back-to-back as they take on the relentless undead horde.

Scorpion destroys the chain and backflips up to stand before running at Kaito.

Kaito kicks Scorpion back and gathers up more holy water from the ground. He blasts the spectre with it, once more robbing him of his flames. Kaito brings his hands together and focuses, blasting at Scorpion a bolt of lightning concentrated directly upon the Deathstone.

A great shattering is heard as Scorpion shouts in a great rage as a shattering noise is heard. The Deathstone cracks and is blasted into pieces, with chunks of obsidian flying everywhere. Kaito watches as Scorpion and the undead army are all affected by the loss of the Deathstone; the corpses fall to pieces and the zombies lose their animation, falling to the floor like ragdolls. The skeletons fall apart, but Scorpion is perhaps the most affected. He screams and grabs onto his skullhead as his body is destroyed, exploding in a fiery storm that lights up the room. The rotting corpses left behind turn to dust.

Kaito watches all of this happen, amazed at the sight. So amazed is he that he fails to notice, until it is too late, the appearance of Noob Saibot from the shadows of the cathedral. Though the wraith could easily attack Kaito and take him by surprise, and he would enjoy doing so, Kaito is not his goal.

Kenshi senses him first. "KAITO!"

The lightning warrior turns and sees Noob Saibot leaping at Quan Chi, opening a portal to his shadowy realm and taking them both within. Kaito jumps at the portal and tries to make it inside, but it closes behind him. The dark assassin and the demon sorcerer are both gone, along with Kaito's bargaining chip for Turana.

Kaito slams his hands against the stone floor.

Kaito immediately searches the church high and low, and outside, but Noob Saibot is gone, vanished with the sorcerer into whatever dark realm he retreats to during battle. Undoubtedly the sorcerer is already back in the Emperor's court.

He slams his hands against a wall again. "Damnit," he mutters. He closes his eyes and thinks of Turana and the torment and humiliation she must be suffering as Shao Kahn's pet.

Father O'Reilly approaches him and offers him a drink. Kaito downs it quickly, and as he does, a bright flash lights up the room as a group of people are brought in through teleportation; Raiden and the other Defenders of the Realm. The shaolin monks, the Lin Kuei, the edenians and several others are within the group.

Kaito throws out his arms. "Oh, well, nice of you to join us," he says. "Quan Chi is gone."

Raiden looks around and sees the signs of battle. "It seems our lack of haste cost us the sorcerer. That is unfortunate; his capture would surely have set the invasion back."

"Well, I destroyed the Deathstone," he tells Raiden. "So that's a third of Outworld's army gone."

Raiden's eyes widen. "You managed to destroy it? I'm shocked."

"Was that a fucking pun?" Kaito asks his fellow lightning-wielder.

Kitana walks up to Kaito. "Calm yourself, Kaito. The war may not be won, but we are winning some of its battles."

Kaito looks at the others, some of whom are wounded. Kung Lao has a nasty gash up his back and Rain was stabbed in the shoulder. Jax is quite torn up, but the tough man is still standing.

"We need to reinforce this church," Raiden says. "We will begin planning our next move from there."

As the group disperses, Raiden speaks to Kaito. "Things have gone badly, but we are not finished yet. Were you successful in your mission?"

Rest assured this was a good fight. I like it when we are more creative with our attacks than "hit the nuts and zap it with lightning".
Not that it's not fun, just gets predictable. and anyone who played Mortal Kombat knows how predictable fighters fare.

Kaito works with Father O'Reilly to gather water to heal the injured. Raiden works his magic as well, and together the group is healed back up without too much fuss. Kaito tends to Jax.

"Have you heard word from Sonya?" he asks.

Jax shakes his head. "No, I--"

Suddenly, his radio blares with static. He takes it out and adjusts it, checking the power source. After a few minutes, it clears. "Major Briggs, come in Major Briggs. This is Lieutenant Blade. Jax, do you read me? Over."

"I read you, Sonya," Jax says. "What is your status? Over."

"Mission success. The Black Dragon were scattered, but Kano escaped. We have two prisoners; Tasia and No-Face. Is Kaito with you? Over."

Jax hands him the radio. "Sonya, this is Kaito. Uh, over."

"We took a dinosaur that was tied up near the boat with us. Is it yours? Over."

"Yes! That's Xos, I stole him from some amazons."

Nearby, Kitana's ears perk up. Sonya comes back with, "Well, Raiden sent the bird-man to make the boat work. We're in the New York Harbor."

Raiden stands up. "I will go collect them presently." He then vanishes in a flurry of lightning bolts.

Kaito hands the radio to Jax before checking Kathy's wounded leg, a gash left by an Outworlder's axe.

"How're you holding up?" he asks her.

"About as well as I could be, given the fact that I'm fighting monsters and dragons and wizards, when before this all I ever fought was MMA," she says with a bit of snark. Kaito chuckles as he brings some water over to heal her leg.

He looks and sees a police officer he does not recognize standing next to a figure in a trenchcoat with a respirator covering a burnt face; Kaito has not met either of them before, but they were brought in with Raiden alongside the other defenders.

Kitana kneels next to him. "You mentioned Amazons."

He pauses. "Oh, yeah... I met Jade. The real Jade."

Kitana seems pleased with the news. "And is she well?"
